#gankutsuou #gankutsuou: the count of monte cristo #despite being an adaptation of a dumas' novel you can't ignore the japanese social context in which gankutsuou was made #as a response to the economic recession of the late 80/90s + how many young people had their futures stolen by the preceding generation #while growing up having to navigate through society's indifference towards them #that's why the anime decided to focus on the younger generation. eugenie's outfits being from the 60s are emblematic of this: #a decade in which the rise of the student movement/protests/rebellions were happening all over japan #gankutsuou addresses these themes (and the dynamics within the family unit - of institutions being parasitic upon the youth) #by adhering to the gothic paradigm - thus being a contemporary gothic piece #anyway... love how this episode is filled with birth imagery! the juxtaposition of the maternal body as womb-tomb #the “malevolent womb” as barbara creed describes

Yeah, I agree with you about the whole Kon thing! I feel like taking something from 30 years ago and applying it to modern takes like you describe is hmmmmm…. maybe not as progressive as the writer intends it to be. It’s sort of the same as people who look at Discowing and try to use it as an example of Dick being queer, imo. It’s just that times have changed imo

Look it is ALSO perfectly possible to look at Kon through a 1993 lens and say ‘that boy is queer’, it’s not like the punk and rave scenes didn’t have heavy overlap with the queer community (this is also the era of Magic Earring Ken).

But solely applying a modern fashion read on a character’s art from 30 years ago is reductionist, and loses a lot of the nuance of his character.

#some of it is just…that was a fashion of the time #they wanted Kon to look rebellious so they leant into contemporary portrayals of alt fashion and rebellion

So, one of the things I like A Lot in fiction is when I get to see a world map. Mostly for getting a better sense of the borders of fictional nations, I'm a bit of a nerd about that sort of thing.

Well, I got to the first episode of Steven Universe that gives us a map, excited to see where on earth the gems of Homeworld had marked as prime real estate for their terraforming efforts, and... uh...
