I used to believe that bugs were little robots. Lots of people do, it’s the prevailing opinion next to “i’ve never thought about it”. Then I watched a mother wasp mourn her child. An animal who stretched after a nap and did little dances when her daughters returned from flight. Now she is opening her fourth capped hexagon and finding a pale white stillborn. She grasps the baby gently in her jaws and does not put it down for over 24 hours. Carries her loss, pacing back and forth the length of her enclosure. It is not the behavior of a robot.

So I think about the prior odds. Scenario A, bugs are robots. Why do I believe that? Because they are so tiny. Because if they are not robots then my world [where “insect exterminator” is a job title and I can buy a can of mass death at home depot] does not make sense. They must be insignificant.

The wasp makes me reconsider. Scenario B: her kind are like mine. cry when we are sad and happy when we play. Has this feature evolved many times? Or is it common to all the children of the precambrian worm? Every shark in the ocean swimming in their own feelings. Every bird and every cat knowing the thrill of being alive? Semi-desperate Mithrun in regards to Kabru post-canon is so fucking real. On top of everything else, the guy kinda sorta literally gave him a will to live. Like. Mithrun's an acts of service logic type guy and was already attached to him. And how the fuck are you gonna return a favor like That. Beyond the continuing demon hunting and shit he probably rings up Kabru once a week like "You wanna hang out. I know you're stressed all the time every day. Come hang out with me." And is like yea, this is a normal response to a guy making you see you still have a life. And doesn't process the fact he's in weird complicated some kinda love with him.

YES !!!! mithrun hasn't desired (or hasn't believed he desired anything besides revenge) and when he's starting to develop feelings for kabru, he's nervous and a bit surprised. to me the realisation is slow and methodical, like "i miss kabru. i want kabru around. i feel his absence. what does this mean. all a part of newly wanting things i guess. totally normal to do this." -> 6 months later "oh"

and last time he fell in love, mithrun became a dungeon master and his entire life changed. now he's got his life back, learning about loving that, and kabru complicates many things. i think even kabru would have hesitations, mostly over how he believes elves can't understand short lived races, and if there is a 'future' for them that they'd both be happy with. i want to see them work it out together. it's very beautiful to me :)

Trying to do worldbuilding for a planet is very hard when you don't know anything about astronomy, physics, hard science in general, and haven't taken a math class in several years

I wanted the planet to be small but otherwise Earth-like but apparently a planet that small would not be dense enough to hold an atmosphere together unless it was real close to its sun and if I wanted it to be real close to its sun while still being habitable it'd have to be a red dwarf star and actually a planet that orbited a red dwarf star that close would probably be tidally locked and the colors would be all weird and wait, how old is the planet, what about the moon, fuck we gotta figure out the tectonic plates, how the fuck do THOSE work--

Anything that's appeared in myths or folktales, including the spooky ones, some of which I deeply dislike but gotta stick to the rules.

Creatures tend to stay to their home turf, but they don't have to. You're not likely to see a yeti in the middle of a city but that doesn't mean they don't exist. That said I hesitate to get too mythical monsterful. The modern age has been very adapt or die for most creatures. So things like dragon's probably don't exist anymore in this world, or if they do they don't make themselves known.

That said there are exceptions to every rule, if you have an idea who am I to stop you? I'm just some weirdo on the internet playing with soldier barbie dolls.
