MARE OF EASTTOWN (2021): Grim and grubby HBO miniseries starring a de-glamourized Kate Winslet as a Troubled Cop™ struggling with the aftermath of her autistic son's suicide as she investigates the murder of a 17-year-old girl (Cailee Spaeny) that ultimately sends shockwaves through the community and Mare's extended family. Jean Smart appears as Mare's mother, Angourie Rice as her daughter Siobhan, and Guy Pearce as an appealingly weathered writer and teacher with whom Mare strikes up a tentative relationship.

MARE OF EASTTOWN is of those frustrating modern dramas that score in execution, but not in story: The lived-in small-town Pennsylvania mise-en-scène is vivid, the cast looks like real people rather than models, the dialogue is sharp, and the acting is superb (especially Winslet, who is extremely good and remarkably convincing), but it's all in service of a plot that goes nowhere very interesting and isn't ever a very pleasant journey. (Oh, look, there's a creep preying on young sex workers, how novel; here's a surprise incest reveal; etc.)

On top of that, the ultimate solution to the mystery is ridiculous, and it's only revealed after a patience-testing array of false climaxes. CONTAINS LESBIANS? Siobhan is gay (and the only one in town allowed to have any fashion sense), and there's a subplot about her relationship dramas. VERDICT: It's among Winslet's career-best roles, but I kept muttering, "Must we?" with each new plot twist. CWs for abuse, incest, and suicide apply.

Nuclear war has annihilated a good portion of people and left only photogenic ones that look like Margot Robbie, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Chris Pine.

Anybody below a 7 is dead. A utopia.

Good performers spend a lot of this movie staring at nothing, staring at the barren landscape and then staring at each other. It's a sparkly vampire away from being Twilight.

Slow moving but with moments that compel you to keep watching even as it tests your patience.

Is it worth it? Sure. And having big movie stars helps you get through the slow patches.

O for Okay At Best.

A big month for landmark pop culture anniversaries!

August 10, 1977: Kentucky Fried Movie opens

In Aug. 1977, one of the great sketch comedy movies of all time was released. Combining Zucker-Abraham-Zucker years before Airplane with young director John Landis, it pushed the envelope in a big way. I first saw it as a little kid and so much of the humor went over my head - but boy was it funny! When I met John Landis at the 2002 F4, he signed by DVD. Happy 45th KFM!

August 13, 1982: Fast Times at Ridgemont High opens

In August 1982, one of the all-time great teen movies was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2017. Happy 40th FTARH!

August 27, 2002: A Rush of Blood to the Head / Songs for the Deaf released

In August 2002, not one but two great rock albums were released. Coldplay’s 2nd album was released. I had been a big fan of the debut Parachutes and this follow up was the band swinging for the fences. There are a ton of bangers on this album! I saw them at Madison Square Garden on their 2003 tour and I knew this band would be at U2 levels of fame in the next few years.
