Alejandro could tell from where he was sitting that you were uncomfortable from the way you shifted in your seat to the smile that he knew was forced after working in Special Forces for so long.

You took a sip of your water as you listened to this guy blabber about being great and how he wants his partner to worry about the housework. Normally, you don't care because you respect those who do regardless of gender, but he wanted it to be forced and not let it be a choice.

Why did your cousin think this guy was a good fit for you again?

Alejandro tilted his head to the side as he watched you.

He was about to leave since Rudy and a few other Vaqueros couldn't make it for a dinner after a mission, but instead, he got up to make his way towards you, pretending to know you.

"I thought it was you!" He said as he rested a hand on your shoulder, you looked up at him and knew exactly what he was doing.

"(Y/N)? You know this guy?" Your dumb date asked, and you nodded as you saw the chain of his dog tags peeking out from under his shirt.

"We met about two years ago. I interviewed him about the issues here in Las Almas with the cartel." You lie, making your blind date tilt his head to the side.

"Why didn't you ever tell me this?" He asked, making you raise a brow.

"Because it wasn't relevant...?" You say in confusion, making him snort.

"If another man is in your life, I should know. No other man should be in your life that isn't me."

Alejandro blinked at the guy as he clenched his jaw, debating whether or not to punch him in the face. Even if this was a lie to get you out of this situation, no one should be forced to have only one person, regardless of gender, in anyone's lives.

"Am I interrupting something?" He asked looking between you and the date.

"No, we can chat." You gave Alejandro a smile before looking back at the guy. "Thanks for the meal, but I don't think this is going to work out." You tell him before getting up and leaving with Alejadro.

"You alright?" He asked as soon as you both were out of the restaurant.

"I am now. Thank you..."

"Alejandro." He held his hand out and you gladly took it, shaking it.

"(Y/N). Nice to meet you."

He grinned. "Can I walk you to your car?"

"I'd like that."

Alejandro nodded, letting you lead the way through the parking lot of the restaurant to your car. He listened to you as you spoke, nodding, showing you that he was listening to you.

When you got to your car, you unlocked it, but he opened the door for you.

"A gentleman?" You asked as you got into your car, a brow raising slightly.

He chuckled. "For a beautiful person like you? Of course."

You felt your cheeks warm up as you smile.

"Also, how about I take you out to get to know you better? See where things go?" He asked, tilting his head to the side.

"Maybe."

"Great," he hands you a piece of paper that had his number on it. "Let me know when you're free and we'll go. We'll talk about it more when you give me the green light." He closed the door and gave you a wink before stepping away from your car.

You smiled and started your car before opening your window. "I'll let you know, Alejandro." You pulled out of the parking spot before driving off.

You missed his grin as you drove off, but he hoped to receive a text from you soon.

And it happened when you sent him a text, thanking him for saving you and wishing him a good night.

You saved his name under 'Hero' since he saved you from an awful date. You'd have to thank your cousin for setting it up on that day, time and place.

The eternal fucking tragedy of Jupiter Ascending is that the wider world doesn't love it like we do. Does it have every single thing that turns my crank, id-wise? Sure! Does it have gorgeous over-the-top sequined costumes and extravagant set pieces that remind you at every minute that this movie specially thanked Swarovski Crystal in the credits? Sure! Does it have theeeee single most pinpoint reading of MY PERSONAL FEMALE GAZE that Channing Tatum has ever done? (sorry mister Magic Mike, but you do not even come CLOSE to "may I kill him?" in terms of sexy) SURE! Was this movie a commercial or critical success? Absolutely not 😔

There isn't, as far as I'm aware, an art book. There isn't an official novelization. There isn't even an actual script posted to the usual internet databases that isn't just an automatic shitty talk-to-text rendition of the movie dialogue. There are concept art paintings and old cast interviews floating around, and this auction website where the Wachowskis auctioned off some of the props from the movie, but as far as canon resources and extra material beyond the movie itself there isn't much. A quick duckduckgo search would probably be more helpful to you than anything else, if any of the websites still have the articles up - it WAS eight years ago, and doesn't that just break my fucking heart.

My corner of tumblr LOVED this movie. In 2015, there were TONS of posts gathering interviews, posting concept art, making cosplays, all the signs of a small but healthy fandom ecosystem. However, we call this the blue hellsite for a reason - not all of those resources are still there, and the ones that survived time and incompetent archival site coding are probably difficult to find. I would definitely recommend trawling the JA tags of all the blogs I tagged at the start of this post, as JA introduced me to two of my longest and most beloved of all mutuals. ALL of their insights were key to A Fine Chain.

There is also my own jupiter ascending tag and my more specific jupiter ascending meta tag, although I don't know how bored you are lol. The general JA tag is 105 pages - I would almost recommend just starting at page 105 and working forward from there since it chronicles my descent into kinky space angel werewolf brain rot pretty nicely. There are also my ao3 bookmarks for JA.

I WILL SAY that it has been 8 years, and I have changed into a very different person than the one I was when I first saw this movie. I don't REGRET the first few chapters of A Fine Chain, or any of my breathless meta posts, but I do think that if I were to write any of them over again, I'd hope that my writing style has matured and I'd have lots more extra material to draw from. Actually graduating from law school, writing long fic in another fandom, and generally percolating more as a person has given me lots of new perspectives on JA that make it more interesting even as I still enjoy it (for example, HBO's Succession is ODDLY RELEVANT and I wish there were more JA fanwriters to take advantage of that fact).

...I hope that was helpful? I will ETERNALLY mourn the fact that this fandom wasn't isn't bigger - we haven't even broken 1k on ao3! But EYE MYSELF am here to discuss JA stuff as long as this weird spurt of creative energy sustains me, and my inbox is always open!

Make Use Of Me (chapter 1, preview)

Dec. 7 EDIT: ONCE MORE, WITH BRAVERY THIS TIME. No more chickening out. You can read this thing FOR REAL now. Sorry for being weird, and now....sorry if this wasn't worth it. XD

O-OK...here goes....

First thing's first: I am not expecting a lotta people to read this. I'm not asking people to read this. At this point, I'm making this mostly as a passion project, and if anyone enjoys it, it'll be a really cool bonus. My writing style isn't gonna be for everyone, and the characters I write aren't the most....popular characters in the CRK X Reader community, and I imagine this isn't really something a lotta fans'll be demanding more of.

This is LONG. This one chapter is 56 pages long. I am a VERY wordy writer,

So......why'm I posting this preview? Well....partially as an interest gauge for people who WOULD wanna read it, but...mostly as a motivator. As something to remind myself of whenever I get lazy. After all....I can't quit after I made the first chapter public, right? By doing that, I put myself out there...And, hey, I even tagged it, so, if by the off chance, someone did read it, I'm basically promising them more eventually.....

But, again, I'm not forcing anyone to read this.

Not only is it long, but.....This first chapter is probably my least-favorite thing I've ever written. By posting this chapter by itself, I'm testing to see if it does its job of making people wanna read the rest, cuz....right now, I'm not so sure how well it succeeds at that.....

This is the boring part of the story. It's a bunch of setup, and me jumping through hoop after hoop after hoop to just get everything started. I know setup is important and all, but....I'm already a very wordy writer, so....oof....There is some interesting stuff that happens, but it takes a while to get there.

I-I....kinda hate it, actually. The only reason I didn't scrap it is that I didn't realize I hated it until I was about halfway through it and the "good part" hadn't started yet. And I still spent a month writing the thing, so....I finished it.

I'm tagging this...as an experiment. If you wanna read this, go ahead. W-well, read my tags first, THEN go ahead. XD

All I can really say in this chapter's defense is that....I do try my best to salvage it. It's just setup, but I TRIED to make it interesting. And everything that seems like it didn't go anywhere, will later. This isn't the whole story, it's just the beginning of what's gonna be a BIG story. Anything that seems weird in this chapter, gets explored in the other chapters. This does set up a bunch of stuff that becomes important later (The friend character shows up later, the Colosseum becomes relevant later). This chapter is boring, but I tried not to make any of it pointless.

For the future: I'm aiming for five chapters. Chapters 2 and 3 will be a series of smaller vignettes that take place over the course of a few years, chapter 4 will be the climax, and chapter 5 will be something of an epilogue. After that, there will be two endings to choose from (which will make sense when we get there).

This probably won't be my favorite thing I've ever written, but it will be the most ambitious thing I've ever, and probably will ever, write. I haven't written something like this before, and it's all to flesh out this story and make it believable.

Right now, I.....I want to finish this. I'll probably still be writing this in February at the rate I'm going, but...at this point, I've put too much into it to give up on it. However, I'm STILL not completely ruling out the idea of my motivation dying before then. It COULD happen. So, what I'm planning to do is...setting a short-term goal of finishing chapter 3. After I do that, I'll post the first three chapters on AO3 together, and work on the rest. That way, even if I don't finish it, I'll at least have it over half done, and chapter 3 will end on a somewhat high note.

So, yyyyeah....Not a lotta people will read this preview. Overly wordy writing style + boring setup part of story + 56 pages long + assumed lack of interest for X Readers of this character (At least, I haven't SEEN many simps for her, m-maybe I'm wrong, I might be, I-I haven't checked any tags cuz I've been nervous, b-but it doesn't make my writing any better. In that case, this is my first time writing her so I'm trying super hard to do her justice >//////<)

I-if you wanna read this, and see if this first chapter does a good job of making you wanna read the better chapters, then...Go ahead.....

Some notes:

-This is still not the final draft. It's finalized enough for me to share, but I'm still not considering it finished. Even tho I'm working on chapter 3 right now, I STILL go back and edit this, even very recently. So, chances are, even if the story is finalized, small details and sentences are still subject to change. I know for a fact that there are still SOME placeholder bits in here that will change after I get some stuff cleared up. Recently, I even considered chopping off an entire section to make it shorter. I decided not to, but hey, it could still happen. I don't wanna waste anyone's time. The first chapter of a story, even if it's boring, is still very important, and I wanna make sure it's the best version of itself.

(A-and yes, this means that I've finished chapter 2 as well. The reason I'm not sharing it is that, unlike chapter 1, it was finished VERY recently, so I might still need to give myself time to edit it. From what I have, tho, I do like it a LOT more than chapter 1. There are some parts of chapter 2 that I'm legit proud of.)

-Even tho this first chapter is completely clean, I-I should mention that....this fic is for adults. The full version, at least. Chapters 3 and 4 are gonna contain some light N/S/F/W moments (the "fade to black" variety, so nothing explicit) and there'll be other slightly racey comments here and there. Just a heads-up. I'm gonna be uncomfy with minors reading this.

ramble about wally & home's codependent swag. do it. you know you want to /lh

sorry for sitting so long on this one, anon. it's good to let thoughts Ferment sometimes. anyway - [pulls up a chair to sit down on it backwards, facing you]

so, the way i see it: it all comes back to home, yeah? home is not just the house - home is also the name of the town, it is very likely the town itself, and that town may be (as far as we know) the entire world. the very Concept of the home been discussed by clown as a central theme of welcome home a few times on his blog. when i say that home is everything, i do mean everything, and i don't think there's anyone for whom that rings more true than wally.

i know i link back to my older posts a lot, but i swear this one is relevant bc i wanna elaborate on a point that i make in the first half of it: the way i see it (as of the time of this writing) home, in all senses of the word, is wally's top priority. which is not to say that his devotion towards home supersedes everything else, but that everything else sort of feeds back into it by design. the neighbors? they are there to inhabit home. we, the audience? we are there to perceive home and round out its population. the WHRP*? they said it themselves - they're there to make that fucking house a home. home is everything, and in turn, everything is for the sake of preserving home. wally cares for his neighbors, and he cares for Us, but would either of those still be the case if there was no home to preserve? i'm not sure.

there is a catch to this, though. of course there is. wally's identity already seems tied pretty heavily to other people; he learns from his neighbors, and he does so on the audience's behalf. given everything i've written in the above paragraph, this can arguably be an extension of his devotion to home, however genuine those relationships may be in their own right. in other words, home (more specifically the restoration/preservation of home) is not only wally's chief motivation, but as far as he's concerned, the reason he exists at all. i think a lot about these tags that @pretty-in-possible (hope you don't mind the tag) left on a post of mine describing their image of wally:

and i had something very similar in mind. if wally's goal truly is the restoration/preservation of home - in this context, his raison d'être, the basis for his entire sense of self - then i can imagine why he would be willing to follow his original role as closely as he could even 50 years after the end of the original show. i can imagine that outgrowing that role in any capacity would feel like a sin. i can imagine that watching his friends outgrow theirs, or at least express a desire to do so, would seem extremely reckless to him, if not an outright betrayal.

("wait," you might say. "doesn't tampering with the site technically count as him adapting/evolving past his original role as audience surrogate?" "yes 8]" i would say. i would not elaborate, and then we would move on.)

i've mostly been talking about wally's side of things, and the reason for that is mostly that wally is just easier to speculate about. home is such a mystery that some people aren't even sure if they're the same being that was on the original show; i've seen people posit that whatever home is now, it is Not what they were originally, either that they're undead or that they've since become a husk for Something Else to inhabit, or some third thing i'm forgetting. either way, i think it's interesting that as attached as wally is to home, even he doesn't seem to be able to assess whatever their needs are with 100% accuracy - if the duet audio is to be believed, there's at least Some guesswork involved. who's to say that wally isn't just hearing what he wants to hear, at least some of the time?

i wonder - how does home feel about being an Embodiment, not of just the town, but of the very word "home?" are they frustrated with the fact that even wally, their own inhabitant, can never fully understand them, and has become resentful? do they appreciate the effort regardless, but feel a growing impatience gnawing at them day by day? are they apathetic at best towards wally, but need him to fulfill some goal or another, since they're an inanimate building? either way, i can't help but feel that home also relies on wally in some way; perhaps not as heavily as he relies on them, perhaps not in the same way or for the same reasons. but there is something Mutual there, i think.

tl;dr: these two are hurtling towards disaster and i, for one, cannot wait to see every last bit of it. here are two songs that remind me of them every time i hear them, the realization of which is often accompanied by guttural wailing.

* wally doesn't seem to have any strong feelings towards the WHRP team outside of maybe sharing the same motivation as them (i.e. restoration) but this may be because he's either hiding from them and also doesn't seem like the kind of guy to Express negative emotions, or he because he is the WHRP team - we'll see how things shake out.

Okay not-so-slight-a-rant, I technically don't know if they are antis, they honestly haven't done anything that is actually bad, but that doesn't mean I don't think they are being stupid :/

So in a fandom I am in, some people are planning an event meant to celebrate a specific minority group I won't mention to keep this as anonymous as possible. And this is great! I think this fandom is great at making fanwork where the characters are part of this minority and an event to celebrate that sounds awesome!

Here's the catch. They directly go out of their way to say no "proship" content. When asked about what this means they say "universal limits such as no underage/adult, no incest and no partner/spousal abuse".

First of all - That is not universal limits, because none of those examples are limits to me. I could interact with any kind of fanwork that includes those things, no problem. Also, in a tale as old as time, when you consider the problematic element of the actual fandom (BTW it's a horror show :D), I always find it suspecious when they only limit relationship stuff, and not gore, death, torture, etc. Sound like purity culture to me. They then indirectly go to say that you can include those themes "as long as it is proberly tagged and treated, bla bla bla, we promise WE know the difference between romantisation and not".

So while they are not sending death threats or anything, it does feel like pretty classic anti behavior, so I go to block them and the event. Here's where they actually get stupid after my opinion: besides the minority group, the event is also meant to celebrate two specific characters - one which is the most hated character by antis in the fandom. So you don't allow for proship content of a character that is almost singely liked by proship people? Good luck with that I guess. Also, one of the mods on their blog mention they can't interact at all with content that include a third character from the source material - who is a major character that has a lot of influence on one of their lives and is very likely to be included in works made for this event. Expecially since it is not a specific ship event, so all ships (except proship ships :D) can be included. I mean, if you are heavily triggered by any content of a character, then maybe you shouldn't mod an event where that character is likely to made content for? But they are an adult and know themselves best, so honestly that really isn't my business.

Sorry for ranting in your inbox, but I thought it was relevant to the blog. If anyone recognize the event, please don't harass anyone related to it or try to sabotage it. It is a really nice idea, but I just don't trust the people behind it, as a proshipper myself. The point of this was just to complain a bit.

"Look what I got!" Monica says and races into the room with a box.

You and Carol walk over to Monica who is too eager to show her aunty the things she's saved for her. She begins with the pictures and explains them as she hands them over for Carol to look at.

"This is me and you on Halloween." The picture is of Monica and Carol with Monica dressed as a pilot and Carol in older clothing. "I'm Amelia Earhart and you're Janis Joplin." Monica takes out another picture of a young Carol standing next to her father. "Oh, this is you when you were little. You didn't get along with your parents so Mom said we became your real family." The third picture is of them at Christmas. "This is us on Christmas. I got more."

All the photos blend together and Monica's words fade into the back as Carol stares at herself through someone else's memories. Another picture is of Carol when she was little, and another when she graduated high school. This time, Carol lets the tears roll down her cheeks.

"How about we stop with the pictures, okay?" you ask gently.

"Okay," Monica takes them back. "Oh wait. I forgot, your jacket. Mom doesn't let me wear it anymore after I spilled ketchup on it." 

Monica isn't here to shove things into Carol's hands, so Carol rummages through the box until she finds her old dog tags which had been burned in half.

"That was all that survived the crash, or so we thought," Maria explains.

"Are you okay?" you ask Carol and grab her hand.

"I don't know," she whispers. Someone knocks on the door and before Maria can get to it, Carol stops her. "Don't answer that."

"It's just my neighbor."

"They can change into anyone."

You, Carol, and Fury walk to the door carefully in case what's on the other side is a green alien pretending to be someone else. Carol opens the door and stares at a man who looks at her nervously.

"Hi, there."

"What do you want?" Carol asks with her eyes narrowed.

"Hey, Tom. This is my friend Carol and her girlfriend, Y/N," Maria introduces.

"Pleased to meet you." He holds out his hand, and when Carol grabs it, she sends a small wave of electricity through his body. "Yow! Static electricity out here's no joke. I noted that peculiar bird you got parked by the road, and I was just wondering if you'd mind if I bring the boys over to get a closer looksie?"

"A closer looksie?" you ask.

"Yeah."

"To see the bird parked out by the road? You're really working overtime to sell this one, aren't you Talos?"

"I'm sorry. Tom, this isn't really a good time. I'll come by tomorrow. Okay?" Maria says and slowly closes the door.

"Uh..."

"Okay."

"You know, you really should be kinder to your neighbors. You never know when you're gonna need to borrow some sugar."

The floorboards creak behind you and you turn to see Talos standing there in his true form with a shake in his hands. You and Carol hold up your hands in preparation for a fight, Fury aims his gun at Talos, and Maria stands there confused.

"Hang on a second, before you go swinging those jazz hands around and making a mess in your friend's house, hear me out."

"Oh, my God. What the hell?" Maria gasps.

You look out the window and see Monica outside with her mother, even though Maria is inside with you. The Skrull pretended to be her neighbor, then turned into Maria when it became relevant to him.

"No one's gonna hurt the girl. Just, don't kill me. It would really complicate the situation," Talos sighs.

"I'm about five seconds from complicating that wall with some ugly-ass Skrull brains," Fury threatens.

"I'm sorry I simmed your boss, but now I stand before you as my true self. Without deception."

"Who the hell is out there?" you ask.

"Okay, that's a fair point, but I'm sure that you understand, I had to take some precautions. I saw you two crush twenty of my best men with her hands bound. I just wanna talk."

"Last time we talked, we ended up hanging from our ankles."

"That was before I knew who you were. Before I knew what made you different from the others. I have an audio recording from Pegasus of your voice from a plane crash six years ago on a device I believe you call a 'black box'."

"They told me it was destroyed in the crash. How'd you get it?" Maria asks.

"Does she not understand? Young lady, I have a special skill that kinda allows me to get into places I'm not supposed to be in."

"Call me young lady again, and I'm gonna put my foot in a place it's not supposed to be," she glares.

"Am I supposed to guess where that is?"

"Your ass," you, Fury, and Carol say at the exact same time.

"Okay, I get it. We're all a little on edge here. Look, I just need your help decoding some coordinates. If you sit down and listen to this, I assure you, it'll be worth your while."

"Call your buddy back inside and I'll listen," Carol crosses her arms.

"Deal," he nods. Goose walks into the room and presses herself against Talos' legs. When he feels the small creature, he bounces back in fear. "Oh, my God! Get that thing away! How'd that get in here?"

Carol picks up the cat and holds her toward Talos. The more she walks to him, the more he steps back until he can't go any further.

"The cat? This isn't what you're afraid of, is it?"

"That's not a cat. That's a Flerken."

"A Flerken?" Fury laughs.

"Mom?"

All heads turn to see Monica there with the Skrull behind her. The Skrull transforms back into his true self, and he shrugs knowing he was just following orders.

"Come here, baby." Monica runs into her mother's arms, and she kisses the top of her head. "I have somewhere we can listen to that thing, but it's not here."

Maria has a study out back that is secluded enough to have this kind of conversation. Monica waits outside wearing headphones so she doesn't hear what's being said. She's too young to understand, and she would only get in the way at this point. Maria grabs the tape from Talos and puts it into her computer. The computers that Howard Stark had back then world a bit faster than this, but it eventually loads, and the audio clip plays.

"Punch in the coordinates. 5229,. -47, 8.768, 0.2," Lawson said.

"Copy that. Where are we going Doc?" Carol's voice came next. 

"My laboratory."

"Your laboratory? What do you mean?"

"Oh, no."

"Is that...? Wait, what is that? It's not showing up on my radar!" 

Carol, the woman you love, is confused but angry for not remembering this. You take her hand and she holds it tightly.

"Go Carol. Fly!" Lawson urged. 

The sounds of planes rushing around and weapons being fired are all that can be heard until you hear Carol's voice. 

"That's no MIG, Lawson. Who the hell are they?"

"Those are the bad guys. Fly faster, now."

"Yes, ma'am. What do they want?"

"Me. My work. I never should have brought you along," Lawson said regretfully.

"Here come some G's."

You're not sure what's happening since there is no video involved, but you can assume that Carol and Lawson tried so hard to get whoever is chasing them off their tail. Something hits the plane, causing it to fall back down to Earth.

"Bail out! Bail out! Bail out! Stay with me, Lawson!"

There are sounds of a crash, then nothing until you hear faint voices being picked up from the recorder that is still playing.

"Danvers, do you copy?" Maria asked over comms.

"Yeah, I copy. On the ground," Carol assured. "Your blood... it's blue."

"Never mind that. How's my hair?" Lawson jokes. "Help me out." When she does, Lawson groaned in pain. "I have to destroy it before they get here."

"What? Lawson?"

"You remember what I said about our work here? What it's for?"

"To end wars?"

"Yeah, but the wars are bigger than you know. You should know my name is not Lawson. My real name is Mar-Vell and I come from a planet called Hala."

"I would say that your delusional but we just got shot down by a spaceship, and your blood is blue."

"Listen, I spent half my life fighting a shameful war. Now, skedaddle before you give me any more regrets. Just remember the coordinates, okay? You've got to save them without me."

"Save who? How?" Carol asked.

"I've got to blow this engine before they find it."

Someone fires their weapon, and based on how Carol cried out, it was Mar-Vell that got hit.

"We have no interest in hurting you," Yon-Rogg said.

"What the fuck?" you gasp.

He was involved since the beginning. You knew something was off about that man, and this proves it.

"No?! Because all the shooting kinda gave the wrong impression!" Carol yelled.

"Where is the energy core?"

"Pararescue's on the way. You have two minutes until you're surrounded," Carol gritted out.

"Then I see no reason to prolong this conversation," Yon-Rogg laughed.

"No, wait! Do you mean that energy core?" 

Some more silence follows her words. Then, a loud explosion happens; the same explosion that came from the energy core being shot at. If you had to guess what's happening is that when Carol blew up the engine, she absorbed the Tesseract's power, which gave her the powers she has today. 

That's how she ended up on Hala. Her life was stolen from her.

"Commander, she's still moving. Permission to fire?" Minn-Erva said. 

That bastard knew everything that happened.

"Hold your fire."

"There's nothing left. The core has been destroyed."

"She absorbed its power. She's coming with us," Yon-Rogg decided. 

The audio clip ends there, and Carol storms out of the barn to grab some air. You quickly follow with everyone else behind you.

"Carol--"

"He fucking lied to me!" she yells as her hands glow bright orange.

"Carol! Look at me." You grab her hands to calm her down. "I need you to calm down if we're going to try and sort this out."

"He lied to me," she sniffles with tears in her eyes.

"I know, and trust me when I say this... I will make him pay."

"You were right. Everything that I knew was a lie."

"Now you understand," Talos says from behind.

"What? What do I understand now?" Carol shouts.

"Yon-Rogg killed Mar-Vell. He killed her because she found out that she was on the wrong side of an unjust war."

"No. Your people are terrorists that kill innocents. I saw the ruins on Torfa."

"Ruins that the Accusers are responsible for. My people lived as refugees on Torfa. We became homeless ever since we resisted the Kree rule, and they destroyed our planet. The handful of us that are left will be slaughtered next unless you help me finish what Mar-Vell started. The coordinates you found would've powered a lightspeed ship capable of carrying us to safety. A new home where the Kree can't reach us."

"They're not the bad ones, Carol. The Kree are. You know what they did to me before I met you. They haven't changed," you try to persuade her.

"Lawson always told us that her work at Pegasus wasn't to fight wars, but to end them," Maria adds.

"She wanted you to help us find the core."

"Well, apparently, I already destroyed it."

"No, you destroyed the engine. The core that powered it is in a remote location. If you help us decode those coordinates. We can find it."

"You'll use it to destroy us," she glares.

"We just want a home," Talos sighs. "You and I lost everything at the hands of the Kree. Can't you see it now? You're not one of them. You never were."

"You don't know me. You have no idea who I am. I don't even know who I am!" she yells.

"You are Carol Danvers," Maria says and walks closer to her. "You are the woman on that black box risking her life to do the right thing. My best friend who supported me as a mother and a pilot when no one else did. You're smart, funny, and a huge pain in the ass. You are the most powerful person I know, way before you could shoot fire from your fists. Do you hear me?"

"We need to find that core and destroy the Kree once and for all. They haven't changed one bit," you back up Maria.

"I know I don't deserve your trust but you two are our only lead," Talos says. "We discovered that both of your energy signatures matched Mar-Vell's core. Now, we know why. If only you knew the importance of it to me. I just need your help decoding the coordinates to Mar-Vell's lab."

"Those weren't coordinates. They're safe vectors," Carol explains. "Orbital positioning and velocity."

"You didn't find her lab on Earth, because it's not on Earth," you say.

"That was the location on the day of the crash six years ago. If we track its course, we'll find it in orbit right now."

"It's just basic physics."

"In orbit?" Talos looks at his friend who just shrugs. "Was that so difficult to figure out? I mean, you're my science guy, right?"

"Yon-Rogg will catch up to you soon. We've got to get the core before he does," Carol says.

"Let me stay down here. I'll kick his ass," you growl.

"I need you with me," Carol whispers to you. "I can't do this without you."

"I'll stay and simm Carol," the scientist states.

"Mmm. So, the rest of you are going to space? In what?"

"A few tweaks to your vessel should do it. I can handle the modifications," the scientist offers.

The plane you came here in is the one you're going to go to space in. Talos' science guy isn't too bright when it comes to figuring out where Mar-Vell's lab is, but he is damn good at modifying the plane to endure the height and possibly space. While they're doing that, you and Carol are talking to Maria and her daughter inside.

"Well, I could use a co-pilot. God knows she can't fly a plane," Carol jokes and nudges you in the ribs.

"I never needed to when I can fly," you brag.

You and Carol look at Maria who widens her eyes in realization.

"No. No, I... I can't. I can't leave Monica."

"Why? It's okay. I can stay with grandma and pop-pop."

"There's no way I'm going baby. It's too dangerous."

"Testing brand new aerospace tech is dangerous. Didn't you used to do that?"

"Your plan is to leave the atmosphere in a craft not designed for the journey, and you anticipate hostile encounters with a technologically superior foreign enemy. Correct?"

All she gets in return is a shrug from Carol.

"That's what I'm saying. You have to go."

"Monica..."

"You have the chance to fly the coolest mission in the history of missions, and you're gonna give it up to sit on the couch and watch Fresh Prince with me? I just think that you should consider the kind of example you're setting for your daughter," she manipulates.

"I like her," you grin.

First Music Monday for me. And in celebration of that I've decided to overindulge and get three songs for my three blog accounts because why not.

One song for a character, one song for a past romance between OCs, and one song for a WIP. Let's start with romance for my FC5 WIP.

Question for Beyblade Metal: if you could have given the Star Fragments to previous characters instead making new characters, who would it been and why?

Good question. I've never considered this before but it's a really neat idea. Thanks for the ask!

Edit: This ended up being a loooong since I decided that some of the story beats didn't work with the character changed so I basically rewrote Metal Fury. Sorry for the long response and for straying so much from the topic, but I felt that it was relevant sicne I can't just change the major characters without it affecting the plot at least a little.

I would keep Gingka, Kyoya and Ryuuga/Kenta's Star Fragments the same since their arcs played out well enough that I can't imagine anyone taking their places.

For the winter Star Fragment, the two main candidates I can think of are Masamune and Benkei (Monoceros and Taurus). I am tempted to say Masamune but I think it would be great for Benkei's arc too, and Masamune will be the red herring just like he was in canon. It would give Benkei a way to compete with the main crew of Metal Fury and show how far he's come since his introduction in the first season.

Another reason is that all the seasonal bladers have their constellations best seen in the second months of their respective seasons, except for Kenta which is third. This symbolizes that they are the second generation of legendary bladers — the first being the ones from history — and Kenta is a third generation since he received his Star Fragment from Ryuuga. Similarly, Taurus is also best seen in January, same as Orion, while Monoceros is best seen in Februrary. Masamune would be a better pick from a meta perspective if there was a third generation of legendary bladers.

Anyway, it would be the last Star Fragment to be awakened in the season; I would play up Benkei's insecurities starting from the Tag Team Tournament arc and that would be the thing to hold him back for the majority of the season, despite all his efforts, until the Better Island Tournament. I dunno who I would choose to be his opponent in the finals — maybe Kenta for old times' sake or Masamune since either would boil down to who is the legendary blader amongst them. The one I'm leaning towards the most, though, is Kyoya. It would be so thematically appropriate, since Benkei has always been Kyoya's number one supporter and he's the one Benkei feels the need to prove himself to the most. I don't remember if Kyoya is there in canon or not, but if he isn't, I would just place his return earlier. But more on that later.

Regardless, this would be the time for Benkei to overcome his feelings of having fallen behind the rest of the group and that would help him awaken the Star Fragment.

Since King won't exist in this AU, Masakune can have his breakdown moment with someone from Team Dungeon or Gingka.

As for the solar system bladers, well, that's a less obvious choice. Also, most of the new characters have a reference to their planet in their beys. Jupiter and Saturn are the Roman names of Zeus and Kronos in mythology which are also the names of Dynamis and Aguma's beys respectively. Mars is the Roman name of the Greek god of war, Ares, and King's Bey is called Variares and is also called the "Sword of the Gods" in canon myths. Not to mention their personalities but I'll talk about them separately.

Since Yuki wouldn't exist in this AU, there needs to be a different way for everyone to learn about Johannes, but honestly, the start isn't that much different. Pegasus and Leone evolve the same way, Madoka and Benkei recall the night they got their Start Fragments and Gingka and Ryo make the connection to the Koma Village legend. At first, they don't really take any action on it but they do keep an eye out for any strange occurrences in the news and tell everyone they know to do the same.

(Because of this delay, Yuu and Tsubasa are able to leave on their training journey together with only words of caution from Ryo and Hikaru)

Then, Johannes attacks Gingka to try and steal Pegasus. He fails but manages to escape, and the gang decide that he could be a danger to other people as well so they search for him. They eventually find him and overhead him talking to Pluto and discover the Nemesis cult through that instead.

Then they discover the island where they find Ryuuga and things play out similar to canon except there's no Yuuki, so they only discover one legendary instead of two. Kenta begins to consider leaving the group but he stops because he isn't sure if following Ryuuga is a wise option since he could probably leave him to die somewhere and succeed.

Fast forward to the Tag Team tournament and since Yuuki isn't here to be Gingka's partner, Kenta gets to do that instead. Except Gingka does pretty much all the work with his new bey, further reinforcing Kenya's feeling of uselessness, much like Benkei. Their first battle is Da Shan and Chi Yun instead of Chao Xin and Mei Mei.

Instead of the Beylin Fist not existing at all, I decided to make them antagonists for this one arc. So Aguma still exists and is still insanely powerful, so he eventually gets to the semifinals where he has to fight Chao Xin and Mei Mei. This battle helps Chao Xin awaken his Star Fragment and become the legendary blader of Saturn.

The reason I chose Chao Xin is because in astrology Saturn is associated with obligation, structure, rules and ambition to name a few (according to Google, correct me if I'm wrong). These values define Aguma's character in Metal Fury but in Chao Xin's case, it would be less about him learning these things and more about reinforcing the lessons he has learned in the previous season and showing how much he has grown since them.

Because Aguma wouldn't have a Star Fragment, the Beylin Fist would lose, but Chao Xin would extend an olive branch to dissolve this centuries long feud anyway, saying that they aren't their ancestors and they don't deserve to be ostracized for something they personally didn't do, to show how much he has grown and matured since his introduction in Metal Masters.

Virgo would becomes Scythe Virgo since, you know, Saturn is the Roman name of Kronos and Kronos usually has a scythe. (Totally not me being lazy with the bey designs, definitely not.)

Moving on to the Destroyer Dome arc. Since there's no King, the legend of Variares would be just used to explain Destroyer's origins since it was modeled after Variares. Also, in this version, Julian would also be participating in the Destoryer Dome as he would be among the people who aided financially for the stadium's construction. And instead of first going to Italy or wherever else they went, and they go straight to America.

(Sadly for Gingka, they still don't get to participate).

So we get to re-meet Team Dungeon, Tsubasa and Yuu — who is sulking because he didn't get a last minute free pass from the WBBA since he's not their employee and using him to find a legendary blader would technically be child exploitation and why would they bother with that when Tsubasa is right there with his already great past record as their special agent? — the Eonis guy still exists, King does not (I feel the worst for this one) and Team Lovushka and Team Garcia are there too.

The first round goes pretty much the same, except Julian is there to contrast how the Garcias didn't change from the second season, although it is acknowledged that their poverty is an actual issue and they're not being evil for the sake of being evil. They're trying to survive; it's just that they're trying to screw everyone else over in the process. Maybe Julian even decides to take a chance on them and gives Argo a job — the only Garcia he can legally hire since the rest are below 18 imo. I chose Julian for this since they worked together in the past so Julian should know why they do what they do and after he almost lost all his wealth, he should be able to at least sympathise with them. Anyway, the Garcias need a better conclusion than canon.

Onto rounds two. Since King doesn't exist and Jigsaw is not interested in fighting at all, Masamune and Lera throw hands instead since they missed their chance to battle in the World Championships in Metal Masters (also so that the tiny rivalry they were beginning to form actually goes somewhere, even if it isn't in this season). Julian realizes that they're not just competing but also trying to find the Star Fragment, so he remains neutral for a whole, further spurring on Lera and Masamune's fight since they just want something done already. That is, until they decide that Jigsaw is being way too smug and decide to team up to take him down a peg. Similar to canon, Jigsaw obliterates everyone except Julian and Masamune.

The final round is where it gets interesting. Jigsaw eliminates Zeo and Toby, and goes into hiding. This annoys Julian since he believes that a battle needs to be fought valiantly with one's full strength, regardless of who your opponent is. We get a few flashbacks to Julian's battle with Da Shan in Metal Masters to show that this is where those feelings originate from. These strong feelings awaken his Star Fragment and Julian pretty much destroys Jigsaw easily.

Sicne Variares is modeled after the mythology Ares, with, you know, attack and defense modes symbolizing a sword and shield, Destroyer's new design would be similar to Variares. The Fusion Wheel would have a different name though, idk, maybe something like Paladin Destroyer or Knight Destroyer to fit with Julian's emperor theme.

Then, Tsubasa, Masamune and Julian have a battle royale. Masamune gets defeated, the stadium breaks and we get the hamster wheel scene with Tsubasa ans Julian instead. Instead of an exposition about Julian's past, we get a flashback to their first meeting aka the Dark Power shenanigans, and they talk about how far they've come since then and that they finally got to battle all out in a tournament after all, bringing closure to that arc as well.

The reason I chose Julian this time is because the planet Mars is associated with strength, passion, valor, energy, etc which are qualities Julian shows as well even if they aren't always apparent. His arc, much like Chao Xin, is more about reinforcing his previous growth than changing anything about him now.

Planet Jupiter is associated with protection (I'm saying this based on Google, correct me if I'm wrong). In Roman Mythology, Jupiter was considered a protective deity as well. We see this with Dynamis being the guardian of his temple and I think it parallels Hyoma being the guardian of Koma Village. In my version, Koma Village would play an important role in the protagonists learning what the hell is even going on since that's considered to be the origin of beyblade itself. Not to mention, it would help flesh out the location a bit more, since we only saw the areas surround the village in Metal Fusion but not the actual village itself.

I picture it starting with Mist Mountain, even though there is no Dynamis. Similar to canon, there would be various traps in the mountain to prevent intruders from reaching the temple at the top and it would essentially be a race between the protagonists and the antagonists to reach the top. Once they do get to the top, they find ancient scripts in a language so archaic that it's almost impossible to decipher. Johannes's group steal the tablet and get away with it, but Madoka manages to snap a picture of it before. Gingka finds the script a bit familiar and makes the connection to Koma Village, so the gang heads there while giving Hyoma and Hokuto a heads up to start looking for clues.

Once they gets there, we get a brief reintroduction to Hyoma since it's been ages, and then the characters would start searching for clues in Koma Village's library. We would also see the village more populated since the people decided that it's safe to return now that Ryuuga and Doji have been defeated and a whole year has passed without any similar incidence.

Meanwhile, Doji — without showing his face on-screen — would make the connection to Koma Village sicne he invaded that place twice and probably did extensive research beforehand. So Johannes, Pluto and Cygnus would make their way to the village as well and start attacking the place, demanding that they give him the information or he would destroy the place. The gang tries to stop him while Hokuto continues to search for information, but they aren't powerful enoguh to defeat Pluto just yet.

Eventually, seeing the place he's worked so hard to protect being threatened and attacked like this again makes Hyoma snap and his desire to protect everyone makes the Star Fragment awaken and he manages to defeat Pluto with his newly evolved Aries.

I decided to just give Aries Jupiter's Fusion Wheel since the four metal balls in the Jade Fusion Wheel are supposed to represent the rings of planet Jupiter, which have four components. So Rock Aries turns into Jade Aries.

After this, Hyoma decides that they need more information on how the legend went down to see if they can learn anything else, but Hokuto tells Hyoma to leave that to him and to train with his new bey instead sicne he believes that the enemy will only get stronger and stronger from here on out.

(Alos, since there's no magical vision of their ancestors, they have no clue what the planetary legendary bladers are supposed to look like.)

For the next one, the candidate I have in mind is a bit out of the way, but hear me out. Mercury is associated with communication, rationality, adaptability, variability and thinking. It's no wonder that Yuki is the legendary blader of Mercury in canon, even without considering that Mercury in Roman mythology is the messenger of the gods and guess what is Yuki's main role in Metal Fury?

Anyway, the person I chose to replace Yuki with is Sora. I imagine that he would appear in Beyster Island as a competitor. He would eventually get to fight Kenta in the tournament and we would see flashbacks of Kenta teaching Sora way back in Meral Fusion. Sora would defeat Kenta, showing how far he has come since then.

While preparing to leave, Kenta would run into Gingka and they would have a conversation about why Kenta left, similar to canon. I feel bad about removing the Gingka vs Kenta fight sicne it was such a good battle, but I think they're close enough friends that they can come to an understanding even without that. Besides, it's been a long time since we've seen Sora so this fight would serve to not only show his growth but also to reintroduce him as a character.

Then, Sora would fight Gingka. Finally, after all this time, he would get to fight his role model. Sora would way more analytical and adaptable now, having built up on the foundation Kenta gave him in Metal Fusion. So, while it wouldn't be as apparent as Yuki, he would still fit the values mentioned above.

I think Gingka would win this fight since showing up out of nowhere and defeating Kenta and Gingka would be a bit much. Not to mention, it would show Sora that no matter how far he has come, he still has something higher to strive towards. However, he would awaken his Star Fragment during this fight.

Since Anubis's Fusion Wheel is modeled after Vulcan, which was a planet proposed to exist in Mercury and the Sun but was later disproved, I would make Sora's Pegasus evolve into Mercury Pegasus. I would get rid of the stripes in the design since they remind me of Anubis, and I would make the shape less like a feather give it a bit more rounder and flowy design as a nod to the element mercury which is the only metal that is liquid at room temperature.

Lastly, for Venus, I would choose Yuu. Venus is often associated with love (platonic or romantic) , relationships, harmony, beauty and the urge to sympathize with and unite with others. In canon, the themes of friendships and relationships were explored with Tithi well enough, but I feel like they could just as easily be explored with Yuu. Not only is he someone who sees something wonderful in almost anything but he is also able to easily sympathize with and befriend others, even managing to befriend Doji to a certain extent.

I have no clue how he would awaken his Star Fragment though. I think that Doji would take a more proactive role this time around, mostly because it's Yuu and he wants to mess with his head almost as much as he wants to mess with Ryuuga. Doji would probably be searching for the last fragment too, since they have literally only one and that is the one Nemesis got, so finding that last fragment is doubly important. He would run into Yuu and Tsubasa by chance and decide to mess with Yuu a bit because Fiji's thw actual worst. Tsubasa tries to fight him off while Yuu recovers from the whiplash of seeing him alive, but Doji's gotten much stronger since then and Tsubasa is struggling. I think Doji mocking what little understanding they used to have back in Metal Fusion would be enough to snap the Star Fragment into action. Flame Libra becomes Death Libra, because I think the complicated bey design suits Yuu since we all know how tactical he can be when he wants. (Seriously, just look at the wiki page. That Fusion Wheel is way more complex than I thought.)

Doji would eventually retreat once Yuu becaomes the legendary blader of Venus, because he knows that he has ruined aby chances he might have had of recruiting Yuu to their side, not that Yuu is stupid enough to fall for that a second time nor would he just abandon his friends for a guy like Doji.

I imagine that, since none of the legendary bladers side with the Nemesis cult this time, they would have some time to actually plan things since the cult wouldn't have the other Star Fragments to accelerate Nemesis's revival. They would, however, make the legendary balders fight the fodder enemies to gather energy for Nemesis once the protagonists do decide to attack their fortress. There would only be one battle since they would have had the time to actually plan stuff instead of speed running the preparation phase of the invasion. Ryuuga dies, Kenta gets the Star Fragment and they all play a role in the final battle instead of it being just Gingka eith the power of the whole world on his side.

Damn, this turned out longer than I thought it would. Sorry for basically writing out a fanfiction, but I figured that I should go forward with how things would change if I did change the main characters. Sorry!

Fem Young Severus Snape - Let's discuss

So I'm working on a story on archive of our own where Severus Snape leaves Hogwarts, but it's a fem Snape and it's tagged as Snape/Sirius and James, which I'm still unsure about. I love stories where characters realise their self worth and the toxic people behind and having character growth. Fanfiction or not those stories are the best.

But I'm mostly wondering what people think young female Severus Snape would look and be like, ignoring my fanfic counterpart that I already wrote up. I will be switching between him and her for addressing canon and fanmade Snape.

Now before any Snape supporters or bashers get onto me, I'll just quickly reveal that I haven't read the books and have only watched at least 4 films, but did some research in my mid teens in curiosity. I've always been interested in the characters, their dynamics, and what if scenarios, but never the magic.

There's a lot of fanart where she's given the same hair style as her male counterpart, and honestly I believe her hair would be much longer. Long to the point where it's unusual and makes her look unhinged. Long to the point where it's too easy for someone to pull it. Most of the time using it to cover her face, unsuccessfully hiding herself from the marauders. I can imagine her eyes and face glaring creepily at anyone who disturbs her, with her nose sticking out through it. She would have a really ghostly appearance, and if you count the mudblood incident you would sense the distress, anger and sadness waving off of her. I'm also thinking of this fanart made by @iscawen.

For an obsessive personality I would take inspiration from Palm Siberia. Palm starts off as creepy but goes off to become someone we sympathise with. Not saying that you have to sympathise with Snape, but I think he's someone to pity at a logical standpoint. I'm also speaking as someone who could relate to certain parts of his character.

Her obsession with Lily has more to do with being her first and only true friend. I think Snape wants love, but that love needs to come in different forms other than romance. With the whole unpleasant parents thing, and people staying many feet away from her due to her unruly appearance, it's safe to say that Snape latches onto Lily for a reason. She wants to be appreciated, cared for, recognised for something good rather than the bad omen that the people she's stuck with think she is. And she doesn't want to be punished for being a bad omen. I guess the same could be said for canon young Snape.

I don't ship them together, and I cringe whenever I come across a fanfic that does. Not only is it fun to hate Lily, but the whole marrying your former friend's childhood bully even though he's changed is super suspicious.

With the leaving Hogwarts thing Snape would have to realise that Lily isn't the angel that her mind made her out to be, but I don't know if that's while she's at Hogwarts or after she leaves.

By this time Snape gets a makeover, none of that altering physical features stuff. Just giving her healthier hair and skin, I don't think she needs make up but I think something Goth related would suit her. The story is set in the 70s so it was more of a decade filled with punk fashion (not everywhere of course) which would suit Sirius. (Another note that isn't relevant, when the fandom gives Snape makeover stories they always change his nose to be smaller, you'll be some hating ass people). I bet Snape had a thing for formal attire so I think she'd wear something similar to Wednesday Addams. I can definitely picture her with a black pencil skirt and blouse.

Also the 70s where a different time when it comes to beauty standards compared to the ones of today, I genuinely think a lot of guys would be into her even though a lot of people in the fandom love making Snape out to be some hideous creature. I think she would resemble Shelly Duvall or Angelica Hudson.

Hey! I was summoned by the tags you put under my post bc I also very much enjoy discussing ethics. I might make this into its own post so I'll try to not elaborate too much...

I think that I can't just decide for everyone if the difference between doing good for the sake of goodness or in order to save oneself matters, but for me, in most cases, including Dazai's case, it doesn't.

I like to believe that morality is a choice one can decide to make, and I don't think it's fair to take that away from them, regardless on how they might feel on the inside. It's a wonderful thing to act morally because it's your "natural" tendency, but I think people also have the right to do so deliberately, for a reason that they choose, without their choice being minimised. They're two different processes for sure, but if the outcome is good, then the action is a good action, and, if being moral is a choice, then I don't think I have the right to decide that only one intention or emotion that will lead there is good enough.

Also, doing good for your own sake and for the sake of others are mutually exclusive at all. One feeds the other, and if we were to put every person's actions under such scrutiny, we would ultimately run in circles.

So, for people outside the story, I would say that the debate does matter, but for the sake of the people involved, it doesn't, because the outcome is the same, especially since Dazai is so opaque as a character, and what he really feels about the things he does is so hard to read, so at the end of the day all most of them experience is his actions.

The consequences of one's actions, how much good they produced, are telling of it being morally right or wrong. I don't necessarily agree, but that's definitely a valid way to see it!!! I personally believe one's intentions are the most relevant aspect to take into account when judging whether and action is ethically rightful or not. Note that that is judging the moral of the action itself, and not giving a judgement on the person; people can have a million reasons to act selfishly, and in my very “humans are always inherently good” worldview more often than not it's caused by society rather than an actual preference to not be altruistic. But that doesn't change the fact that even a good action, if it isn't moved by good intentions, won't ever be passable of being morally right to me. Besides, then, wouldn't the other way round work to? Someone well intentioned, who's however incompetent, and ends up with their actions putting more bad in the world– as long as they're acting with a true desire to help others for the sake of it, their actions can't be considered morally wrong for me.

To clarify, with reference to your ask; I don't think people who do something for selfish reasons, and end up doing good, are morally rightful; but if they decide to do good, well, isn't that a well-intentioned aim itself? Then I think they stop being selfish to the extension that they consciously decide they're going to do good. That's not morally reprinandable at all.

Now, regarding Dazai... Honestly, I don't think Dazai is a good person. Because he never meant to do good for the sake of it. But now, the thing is, I don't think anyone in bsd is meant to be interpreted as good or evil– nobody, not Atsushi, not Mori, no one. When it comes to bsd– I do think bsd expresses a more or less nihilist worldview. And I know pretty much everyone else disagrees with me on this, I know, I'm sorry. But I do think there lies an undergoing message that good and bad are ultimately the same, and equally meaningless– it's there in Oda saying “Neither good nor evil mean much to you”, it's there in the way it makes you root for mafiosi like they were the good guys, it's there in the way Dazai never even considered to make amends for the bad things he's done (because they were never bad to begin with, because good and bad mean nothing anyway), it's there in the way it constantly shows good people doing bad and bad people doing good in a way that basically equalises them. To me there's really no point in discussing whether Dazai is good, because he is most evidently not, but that's only because he was never meant to be interpreted as such to begin with. Please refer to this post for further details; it's not surprising at all that Dazai switching over to the “good side” didn't come with a radical change of heart, and that he basically stayed the same, because how could he become good when that's no different than being evil, and those both mean nothing anyway?

And I know most people see bsd's core theme as finding a reason to live, and maybe it is, but even then I think that wouldn't be by denying its nihilism, but rather accepting it and finding a reason to live in spite of it: to me all of bsd really sums up in “that, at least, is a little more beautiful”.

We've posted about this a bit before, but is it ever... weird to other systems that so much content about DID goes out of its way to talk about childhood trauma even when it's not relevant to the conversation?

Like, if it's relevant – if it's something you genuinely want to bring up – by all means, talk about it; I'm not out here furious that people talk about the correlation between childhood trauma and disordered systemhood. But it's brought up so often that it feels like I'm having to ignore whatever the person says about childhood trauma to listen to them talk about the disorder; it feels like some of these creators are being held at gunpoint to mention their trauma in every video or every fanfic and it's just like?? You don't need to do that?? This barely related lore dump is distracting from the lesson or story you're trying to tell me; please just give me the fun fact or cool story without going off-topic. Is someone pressuring you to constantly bring up these personal details about your life every time you open your mouth?

And not to mention how they'll use this as a springboard to make sweeping statements about the experiences of everyone who has their disorder. "Everyone with DID hates themselves and their alters and wishes they were a singlet and –" actually, we're just chilling. Don't know why you're going out of your way to imply we don't actually have DID just because we're accepting of who we are. I get a lot of the people who say this are trying to educate those who see DID as just a fun party trick or whatever, but it's not really good education if you're making incorrect generalizations about your own community.

I guess all this is to say that we feel pretty estranged from the DID community due to how often it focuses on trauma and self-hatred. If someone does talk about the positive experiences they have with their system, they immediately have to follow it up with a thousand disclaimers about how they know DID is the worst thing ever and they're so sorry for experiencing joy and they promise their life being okay-ish for half a minute doesn't mean the rest isn't a living hell. It just makes us so uncomfortable and honestly seems pretty hostile to anyone trying to recover from the trauma everyone is so obsessed with. Like. Okay, have fun with your pit of despair, we'll be over here in the plural tags where we don't feel pressured to take a bat to our feeble self-esteem and bring up memories of trauma whenever we want to make a system joke.

TLDR: it's a little strange and alienating that so much content about DID brings up childhood trauma even when it's not necessary or relevant to the topic at hand, and it gets downright uncomfortable when people act as though hating your disorder/thinking about your trauma 24/7 is a symptom of having DID that you must show at all times.

(This is a personal vent post about trends we've seen on TikTok and Tumblr and may not reflect your experiences. If you've had better times in DID specific communities, I'm happy for you, but that's not what this is about. And for the love of fuck, don't bring up syscourse on this post.)

my actual legal first name is joseph, which is my grandfather's name! so, uh, somehow yes, i am named after somebody! but i'm 99.9% sure it was out of laziness and not out of love. well, no, i'm 100% sure of that. it's not like my mom has ever respected her parents...but that's a whole different thing, we're not going there.

when was the last time you cried?

i'm a crybaby, come on! i'm known for being very emotional. i mean, sad animal commercials make me weepy. externally weepy. like tears running down my cheeks weepy. but the actual last time i cried? hmm, maybe like a week ago? i don't know if i could tell you why, though. i probably blocked it out of my memory! i'm great at that.

do you have kids?

do, uh, do cats count? because i do have a cat who i love and put sweaters on. sweaters! and he loves it.

do you use sarcasm?

it depends? sarcasm usually feels mean-spirited to me, so i'm not super into it, but then again, that's half the conversations i have with my family. i know in that case, though, that it's all bullshit humor and not serious. anyway, i think what i'm saying in a roundabout way is it depends a lot on context and audience. i don't want to hurt anyone's feelings or be a dick. i like being nice.

okay, listen, in the most normal and not at all weird way possible, people's hairlines are always what i see first. i've been the first witness to so, so many fake blondes accidentally showing their dark roots or to dudes going bald. i'm sorry! i'm just freakishly tall! i can't not look down at all your heads unless i'm kneeling down on the ground. i'm not trying to spy on or judge the state of your hair, i promise.

what's your eye color?

brown! justice for brown eyes, the best eye color. i love being able to go out in the sun and not have my eyeballs bleached by the light. also, there's really not that many brown eyes in my family, so that's kind of fun. i'm a special boy.

scary movies or happy endings?

why not both? i love a good blair witch project, final destination moment. i also love a nice mushy gushy romantic movie with a happy ending. hell, i'd watch both in the same evening. start off with a fucked up horror movie and end it with pride and prejudice. sounds like a perfect night to me.

any special talents?

probably not anything relevant? i mean, i've played skyrim on survival mode without dying before. oh, and i guess back when i was still playing hockey, uh, a decade ago, i could score with the michigan goal pretty easily, which isn't all that common. in high school, i got my school the state championship win with that skill. but meh, i don't know how many people in the world know enough about hockey to care about that.

what are your hobbies?

i like to think i'm a well rounded person. i enjoy the super basic stuff like listening to music, but i'm also into into video games and tabletop RPGs like d&d. cooking and baking are fun for me, too. i did get into art semi-recently as well. i kind of had to have something i could do while laying down, like, 24/7 after i had spinal surgery.

oh, well, like i said, i played hockey for a really long time, like from, hmm, i think kindergarten and on! i even got a scholarship in college to play hockey. i'm glad to be done, though. some things ruined it for me. long story. but these days, uhh, i don't play any real sports anymore. i like hiking, you know, and i do work out at least every other day because it makes me feel better in a lot of ways, but that's kind of it. my sports days are over. i don't even skateboard anymore and i used to do that all the time.

like 6'7" - though, i am rounding down a little bit. yes, down. not up. also, don't ask me how i ended up that tall. i have exactly one relative who is also tall. hi, chelsea! anyway, i am an accident or one hell of a joke. i'm laughing, i swear. it's very funny.

favorite subject in school?

i was overall a good student because i studied pretty hard but i was for sure a science and math kid. i loved physics in high school. and then in college, i got some way more fun science and math classes. just so you know, i am really holding back right now from rambling like a total nerd loser about my college classes...

that's such an easy question! when i was really, really young, i wanted to be a weather man, but then i changed my mind and wanted to be a pilot because, i don't know, i hit that time in every child's life where they have to become obsessed with a form of transportation. but then i never let that obsession go. my parents wanted me to be a doctor the whole time, though, but eww, no, i'm good. anyway, the dream of flying planes never died and somehow it worked out. now if i could just, uh, you know, go back to that job soon, that'd be sick.

thank you for the further bookmark issue. as someone who doesn't really use ao3 (fic isn't so much my thing, etc) but is y'know terminally online it's interesting to see the difference in which bookmarks function there as opposed to most every other site. I had no idea there were people leaving comments and notes on things that could just be seen??? like i hear bookmarks and immediately think 'ah yes the websites i would like to save for later in completely bizarrely named folders that i will most definitely forget about in about 20 seconds max' and not what appears to be a secondary (tertiary?) personal tagging system. and so out of genuine curiosity are there other things on the site that don't really work the same as one might assume? like i'd just default assume that a bookmark would be private and lost to the ages in three sub folders of whatever. again; haven't really used ao3 since um...probably shortly after launch and so haven't ever really like gone into explore more of how it functions beyond the basic tagging system. alternately tho, have bookmarks everywhere always been public in which case i am so sorry to anyone who has opened their how two guide on [random special interest at the time] only to find that somehow it's been associated to a sorting solution that makes sense to no one (especially me.) sorry, hi, not trying to be rude or continue drama just a little lost on the sidelines here.

The thing about AO3 bookmarks that you're (totally understandably, since you don't use the site!) not quite grasping is that, again, it's blatantly clear simply from using the site that they're public. There's a button on every single fic that leads to the bookmarks, and a hyperlink under every single fic summary that does the same thing. The bookmark is a site feature that links back to the original fic, and you can clearly see bookmarks on other users' profiles.

I totally don't blame someone for briefly, initially, assuming bookmarks might be private! My condescending bitchiness is specifically aimed at people who make heavy use of the feature for YEARS and STILL have no concept of how it works, and get angry when corrected--at a certain point, it becomes willful ignorance. You gotta LOOK at the site you're using, and if you refuse to do so, the people around you have every right to get sick of your shit, you know?

So, bookmarks are just really not an example of unintuitive design. Honestly, most of AO3 is extremely clear in how it functions. On any site, it's worth taking five minutes after joining to open different menu options and see what all is available, and AO3's menus are really thorough and very easy to use.

Furthermore, a lot of the things people complain about as if they're...well, for example, the definition of Mature vs Explicit fic, or how archive warnings work. I've seen a lot of people act like it's mysterious or impossible to learn or like it's purely Terminally Online Acquired Fandom Knowledge, and get frustrated by being expected to "just know" how ratings or relationship tags work. And I'm FULLY sympathetic to that! There's nothing more frustrating or upsetting than everyone around you acting like you're supposed to "just know" how something works, "just know" an entire subculture!

Here's the thing though.

AO3 has tooltips built in to explain those things.

They're not esoteric nebulous Fandom Knowledge TM that you have to learn by meditating on a mountainside! And they're not totally meaningless terms that people being sticklers about are just gatekeeping over. On AO3, they have specific meanings and usages, and the explanations DON'T require you to go poking around the FAQ or Q&A sections of the site! They're easily accessible right from the relevant pages.

(I realize that I am, in general, kind of a sarcastic bitch, so I want to be very clear that my tone in this specific post is NOT sarcastic and I am NOT trying to come across as pissy or condescending--you asked a legit question in good faith and I'm happy to talk about it.)

I don't know that this is really the answer you were looking for, but I think it's the most productive answer I could give! The site is very self-explanatory for anyone who cares to use it.

I won't say there will be nothing in the tag, but per the strong feelings of others I respect, as of this post I'm done talking about the contedversy 2022 (you're welcome for the term lol).

I've said what I've said. It's not impossible that if pressed I may defend my own conduct. If I find notable, and I do mean substantial information in future, I may share that. Naturally, I may reblog what others have to say if it seems fair and relevant.

But I agree that all the salient points have been made already, and this isn't a stan blog by any stretch of the imagination. I woke up to notes from folks joking (?) about going to war over this and honestly? I see the good intentions, but still. Don't.

If you see misinformation, correct it with the truth as best you know it. I'd suggest doing it quietly. This has died down pretty nicely and I think we'd all rather keep it that way and not have another smattering of nonsense tiktoks from people with nothing better to do than pretend they have an educated opinion to give, or worse, have this reach twitter and insta and end up getting actual notice but still without proof of the allegations.

I stand by my statements. If anyone sees any firsthand accounts, please point me that way. I'm not done trying to understand what the hell happened. If I don't understand by then, I'll be headed to the smallest con I can find next year that the man himself will be at. I might even attend MM.

Above all, please be kind to yourselves, and decent to others. Maintain your own mental health. The truth will out, whatever it is, and the initial push that was needed against misinformation is done.

I truly appreciate everyone who shared relevant knowledge, asked honest questions, was willing to sit in that messy and uncomfortable position of uncertainty with me and others, and/or stepped back when feeling the need. I'm grateful for the people who read and said nothing, but at least set eyes on the matter before making your own decisions. Especially, I thank Vice for being on a call with me for literally 13+ hours in a single day, staying up for way too many hours when we should have slept, while we did our best to make at least some small difference.

We waited two full days after the initial claims for people to come forward and stop dancing around the "maybe I should talk about what I saw" nonsense. I don't believe either of us specifically planned to speak out about those at all, and had planned to wait for more info. But when the further fear-mongering resulted in no answers but a wave of hysterical rumor quickly growing less and less grounded in truth, we pushed back. It wasn't nice. I'm not sorry for that.

You'll get what you get from this blog. Sometimes when irrationality is afoot, you're going to hear strong language or abrasive statements. Some of them will be calculated, others may be genuine. I'm a human person too. We've all got lines, and mine got crossed, so you got what you got yesterday and it's back to business today.

So.

Time for a Hackearney drabble or two to cleanse the palate, I'd say.

carries all his precious things with him wherever he goes. he's really into clothes with flowy/net-like material or sturdy canvas textures so he can cover them in literal hundreds of earrings, badges, brooches, pins, and he'll take them out of his clothes and stick them through his ears throughout the day. he truly values personal expression and believes that his own body is a doodle book for the story of his life. this is also why he tends to spend literally thousands of dollars on tattoos and then eat nothing but free sauces from fast food places and instant ramen for months

people that he admires/adores bring out the simpering sycophant in him, and he's a good friend if he warms up to you, but make no mistake, dude is not a pleasant person to be around. he has Very Specific Opinions about certain things, as well as a huge disdain for stuff like politics, social media, etc, and he doesn't have the social battery to engage with anyone he disagrees with. he won't even argue. he just leaves the room. he's overall a pretty quiet guy, and gosh he loves to talk about anything he's interested in, and he loves to teach people things and share opinions, but the moment someone tries to open a debate or even some friendly banter with him, he'll instantly check out.

a pure hedonist, obsessed with experiencing as many things as possible, including the negative. very good at putting a spin on all the objectively Bad Shit that happens to him to make it fun and exciting and new. the friend who goes "OMG GUESS WHAT HAPPENED YESTERDAY!!" and then spends 20 minutes gushing about like. the most fucked up experience ever.

kiri is noah's half-brother; whereas noah is canonically around 21/22, kiri is 32. noah's mother, a huge horror movie buff conspiracy theorist and lovecraft enjoyer, disappeared when he was about 11, and noah was sent to live with kiri.

kiri, being one of those people who's contracted into his thrall, was always around a whole heap of Fucked Up Shit when noah was growing up. noah's early childhood with his mother already gave him some... interesting ideas about the things that lurk beyond human perception, but it was being exposed to the aftershocks of the eldritch horrors kiri was dealing with for work that really cemented this.

noah never had a chance to be a 'normal kid' per se, but he maybe could've at least become a semi-functional adult if not for what he saw through kiri. these things are beautiful are the only truth are everything. additionally, kiri's tacit demeanour and tough/cruel love treatment definitely exacerbated noah's need for codependency and constant validation to the point of toxicity

but, y'know. he is a good guy overall despite his... many faults. or a kind guy? either way, he's not even really involved in this fuckshit cosmic opera so that part of canon has been nuked and now he's uhh. he's uhhhh got the worst boyfriend in the world.
