With less than 2 weeks before the Nintendo 3DS eShop closes, this short uses apps only available through the eShop, as a love letter to those apps.
This was a slooow-burn film I worked on over 22 months, on and off, to pass the time while waiting in public, like waiting at the doctor’s office, waiting for food take-out, or waiting while my kids ice skate.
The animation was done using the Butterfly Animation app. The backgrounds were painted using the Colors! 3D app, which was then imported into Butterfly. The frog croak sound is from Flipnote, another drawing app on the DS. The music is from the Nintendo eShop theme, and the music from the chase shot was created using the Korg M01D music synthesizer app.
UPDATE: I saw Catsuka did a nice shout out to my film! :)

Continuing to fire on all cylinders to make this Sky 🤝Mononoke collab a reality! 🐲⚖️🌊
Process GIFs and artist commentary below the cut. ⬇️
Left: Process GIF Middle: Just the background, cos I really like how it looks! Right: Illustration without the collab logo
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And here are my notes on my inspirations and references. There's a lot of 'em, so instead of embedding relevant images one by one I put them in a callout sheet! For accessibility, I also included transcript (with bonus ramblings) below each sheet.
Tumblr media
Ofuda circle modeled in Google Sketchup 2017, then lightly transformed in Photoshop to flare out. I tried my best to hand-draw these, but it the results came out really clunky and stiff. I figured if Mononoke shamelessly utilizes 3D in their show, I can too!
Krill and sky kid composition roughly inspired by the Ayakashi DVD cover illustration. On the surface level, the krill's black-and-red color scheme mirrored that of the bake-neko. Not to mention, in the world of Sky, the krill would be the best fit of a mononoke-like entity. The red background is also a nod to the red skies seen during a shard eruption in Sky.
Sky kid gesture based on the Festival Spin Dancer's Tier 3 poses and the Medicine Seller's iconic pose in the Zakishiwarahi episode as inspiration. This was the idea which springboarded this illustration into existence. I wanted to do my take of the Medicine Seller's pose, but in a more dynamic manner: rotate the pose to a profile position and set the ofuda in a diagonal, flared out arrangement.
Cape inspired by tenbin design featured in the 2024 Mononoke movie. This one's an interesting one - I wanted the cape to be a stiff material that doesn't "flap" when in flight - similar to the Aurora wing capes. It ended up looking like a kite of sorts, which I'm not entirely opposed to! I haven't had the opportunity to showcase the back view of this cape design, but I envision it having some mechanical aspects to it - the "wing" which are flared out in this illustration fold in like moth wings, and a little bell is attached to the "tail" part and it jingles a little whenever the sky kid flaps!
Bandana is based on the Scaredy Cadet's hairstyle from the Season of Assembly. Mask design utilizes the 2023 Days of Style mask and the Nintendo Pack mask as bases. Pretty self-explanatory. I basically went onto the Sky wiki and found the cosmetics that most closely matched what I was looking for. Then if necessary, I went to the Office space to do photoshoots to get the appropriate camera angles for them all.
Seasonal pendant inspired by the classic Medicine Seller's necklace and the eye motif featured in the 2024 Mononoke movie. Possibly the only one-to-one homage to the classic Medicine Seller design here, but his garnet necklace was too good of a match to the seasonal pendant. A side tangent: does the new Medicine Seller possess a necklace, let alone a mirror? So far all the shots of him don't feature it. Fascinating.
Tumblr media
Dark dragon krill anatomy references a custom figurine crafted by @/escaflowne_n07 on Twitter. Until I found this, I was honestly at a loss finding reference for this - be it on the internet or during in-game photoshoots. The lighting on the krill in-game focused on its menacing silhouette rather than its structure. And not to mention, getting a close-up shot almost always set off the dark creature's aggro. I have no idea how this guy found the references to put this model together - well done!
Mantas, elder constellations, and sun dog references murals in the Cave of Prophecy. Krill aside, the overall illustration was leaning a little too much towards Mononoke so I tried finding opportunities to insert more Sky into it. Added bonus is that now there's storytelling in the background: during a shard eruption, a giant krill rises from the frothing waves of dark water to hunt down a flock of mantas.
Clouds behind the sun dog reference the ones featuring heavily in the Umibozu episode. This illustration has a lot of ocean theming, so I figured this would be appropriate.
Rendering style of the background is lightly inspired by the 2007 Mononoke illustration. Mainly having a 2D inked style to contrast with the more polished render of the sky kid. Funnily enough, this was a tertiary inspiration, which lead to the discovery in the next point!
Dark water waves and sun dog composition heavily references Hokusai's "The Great Wave". The waves were modified to be bottle-green of the Golden Wasteland's dark waters. The sun dog is in the spot where Mt. Fuji is in the original composition. these were all hand-drawn by the way! I merely emulated the style of the source material. As a side note, I also borrowed the spotted sea spray rendering for the krill's red spotlight.
Background pattern taken from the ofuda design featured in the 2024 Mononoke movie poster. Mainly to add some gritty texture to the sky. I worked pretty hard to replicate this ofuda design as a high-res asset so I wanted to use it more!

So I’m back…
But this time, I have a tutorial!
Do you have a 3DS?
(If you say yes to that, then we’re cooking).
Do you want to draw something similar if not better than…
Tumblr media
THIS?!
Then boy I have a tutorial for you!
Since this was drawn on a 3DS, I can’t really tell you anymore than for a 3DS. Sorry..
Step One: Prep!
Grab your 3DS and go to “Nintendo 3DS Camera”! Or whatever it might be called if you have a “New” one.
Optional: If you want you can take a picture within the game- if it’s capable of doing so.
For me I’m gonna use a screenshot from Miitopia.
Tumblr media
Step 2: Background!
Part 1: Plain Backgrounds
If you want something like the following image, follow this part’s instructions.
Tumblr media
Take a random full screen sized image. Any image will work as long as it fits the screen perfectly. (Take a screenshot from a game such as Tomodachi Life or Miitopia).
Tap the image so that it says graffiti.
Then use a stamp, such as the dialogue bubble.
Hold the stamp and make sure it fills the corners.
Then you have a plain white background! This one you can press finish, but the other method you can’t.
Here’s a quick video tutorial, because I don’t think I phrased it right!
(I took it on my phone, that’s how easy it is).
Part 2: Backgrounds that aren’t pure white!
If you want to make the starting image (but your own), then follow these steps!
(Once again, I’m using Miitopia screenshots for an example).
Once again, GRAFFITI!
Instead of using a stamp, you might have to just color it yourself. Mainly because the stamp method is harder for backgrounds like the first one.
COLOR THE BACKGROUND, BUT DON’T DRAW ANYTHING ELSE. (Unless you just want to draw a background). Trust me, it’s easier.
Boom! Plain background ready for sketching.
Don’t press finish cause it can decrease the quality with enough graffitiing and finishing.
Tumblr media
Step 3: Draw the Base!
You gotta draw that body-ody-ody!
Just draw a bust or whatever is easier for you. “Omg IsBus you have to have drawing skills?!” Yeah I know. How could I?
I’m gonna draw the bust up because it’s easier for me.
Tumblr media
(Don’t look at me like that.)
For the plain BG ones, just do the same thing for the rest of the steps but for your screen.
Since the background hasn’t been saved, don’t use the eraser because it will remove the white BG. Unless you are using the first background method, that is. (Use the white pencil.)
Step 4: Draw the character / Coloring Page Step!
On the plain BG you can draw what ever but for me and my Miitopia character, I’m gonna draw him. If you did the color-only-a-part-of-the-drawing method (like I’m doing), you can do whatever still.
Think of the white area as a green screen; you can draw whatever you want on it.
This phase is like the pencil part of a physical drawing. White out the base as you get to parts you want over it (for example: hair or clothes).
Tumblr media
Bam! Coloring page!
Part 5: Coloring!
Remember when I called it a coloring page? This is why.
Color the drawing how you see fit!
If you’re using the all white bg, then you might have to use the stickers or the rainbow pencil. I recommend the stickers if you want to shade/shine, but if you want more options, use the rainbow brush.
If you’re basically doing what I’m doing, you can use the colors from the image to color your character!
Once you’re done coloring the image, remember to ink the lines again! Use a medium brush for coloring but a thin brush for inking the lines.
Tumblr media
Part 6: Final Details!
For people who want any additional details, or need to clean up edges.
If you did the plain bg you can decorate and clean up as much as you need!
If you’re doing what I’m doing, you can clean up the edges of the white spot and add additional details.
Tumblr media
And Voila! You did it!
If you have a 3DS and followed my tutorial, show me what you did! I wanna see it!
Have a good day/night! And thank you for reading!

I wrote this essay for another platform, but I want to share it here.
Capitalism is killing art, in every part of the process. From the creation, the consumption and finally the preservation. In this serious of essays, we'll be looking at the preservation in particular. Looking at the ending of the process, and working backwards, will help give us a stronger understanding of the concepts and powers at play in the production, for the preservation and consumption directly effect the creation. This first part of the series will look into the effects of capitalism, and private property, more specifically intellectual property, on the preservation of art and the methods of art preservation that are at odds with capitalism.
Emulation & Video-game Piracy
An important part of the process of preserving art is making sure that the art work can be experienced by as many people, for as long as possible. When it comes to video-games in particular, there's plenty of fans who are dedicated enough to the art for to make sure retro games are always playable for a more general audience, and with as much accuracy to the original experience as possible. These dedicated fans create emulators, software programs that are able to replicate the functions of older video-game consoles, in order to allow older games to be easily playable to modern gamers.
Emulators themselves, are fully allowed under the law[1], however we do encounter a problem. The data that emulators are designed to read, is often illegal to distribute on the internet. The spread of this software, the actual data of a particular video game, is considered digital piracy, a theft of intellectual property[2]. This is an argument often used by corporations like Nintendo to shutdown websites that host these data files[3]. However, these same corporations often give no good alternatives to emulation, and in extention this piracy.
Many of these companies do not re-release these games, at best they may remake them or occasionally offer a limited selection on their own emulators, which can often have errors or be tied to a subscription service, as is the case with Nintendo.[4],
The preservation of these games often come down to an effort from the fans, an effort that is in direct conflict with the intellectual property owners. Without emulation, many more obscure games, and a good number of games with complex licensing agreements, would be permanently lost to time.
I would like to take the time to look at two examples in particular, Metal Gear Solid (Game Boy Color, also known as Metal Gear Solid Ghost Babel in Japan) and Mother 3. These examples are far from being the only examples worth talking about, but I think they both greatly exemplify the ideas I wish to discuss.
Metal Gear Solid (Gameboy Color) which I will refer to as Ghost Babel for the rest of this essay, for simplicity and to avoid confusion with Metal Gear Solid (PlayStation) which is a completely different game, is a game released in 2000 by Konami for the Nintendo Gameboy Color. The game was a spin-off of the Metal Gear Solid series. The game has never been re-release.
This is primarily due to the lower sales of the release brought in compared to any mainline Metal Gear Solid game (all of which have been re-release and remastered many times) and the little market demand, especially in the AAA gaming world that Konami is a part of, for 2D stealth action games. There is little profit to be found in porting over Ghost Babel to more modern systems, so it just isn't done. Art that isn't profitable is cast aside by the capitalist.
The only way to play this game, and comply with the laws of a capitalist society, is to own a Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance or a DS (but not a DSI or 3DS) and an original physical copy of the game. All these items are no longer being produced, they are all in the second hand market, and as the supply will never rise, the prices can tend to get high pretty quickly.
Not only is pricing an issue, but these objects will not last forever. The cartridges used to store the data of Gameboy Color games have batteries that will one day die, preventing saved data from being written on them[5], and the electronic parts in these systems, and in the cartridges, will one day fail as any other machine will without constant maintenance. Preservation through the ownership of the original hardware is limited in scope, and is doomed for failure.
The only method of preservation that solves all these problems, the problem of limited supply, high prices and degradation of hardware, is digital emulation and piracy. This is however, in direct conflict with the intellectual property of the capitalist. The capitalist wishes to actively suppress these acts of preservation in the name of preserving their intellectual property[6]
Mother 3 is a video game created by Nintendo that has never been released outside of Japan. The reason for this is once again a profit one, Mother 2 (know simply as Earthbound outside of Japan) did not sell well at all when it first came out and Mother 1 was never released outside of Japan untill way later, where it got a digital release, do to the growth in a western Mother Fandom. The Mother series has a very particular style and humor, that doesn't always sell as well with western audiences, making localization a process that yealds little profit, thus the localization is never made.
For anyone who lives outside of Japan, the only way to play this game is illegally. You must rely on fan translation and emulation. No one other than Japanese people, or people who know Japanese, own a Japanese Game Boy Advanced, and have a copy of the game, can play it without going in direct violation of the interests of the capitalist and violating their intellectual property rights.
Music preservation and Intellectual Property
Video-games are far from the only art from that's preservation is at threat from capitalism. Music is another art form that has been plagued by intellectual property. From songs that quote passages of other songs, to song that uses samples with licensing issues, so much art has been altered, limited or destroyed by capitalism. I'll be looking at three different examples.
The Gun Song by Car Seat Headrest has two versions, the original version of the song, and the No Trigger Version. The differences between these two versions is pretty simple, the no trigger version is what you'll find on streaming services, and the original thay is only available on the Bandcamp version of the album. The reason for this is a lyric change due to copyright issues.
The original version of the song end with the lyrics "Down by the river, I shot my baby" sung with the same melody as the song Down by the River by Neil Young. Do to the shared melody and lyrics, this caused copyright issues. All releases of the song, other than the original independent release, have been altered to cut this part out. This song, as it was intended to be heard, has become difficult to access for most people.
The album Everything is a Lot by Will Wood and the Tapeworms was drastically altered when it was remastered, because all the samples used in the original ran into licensing issues. This lead to the more accessible version of the album (the only version getting physically releases) missing important parts of songs, in particular, the vocal send off on the track "Thermodynamic Lawyer" which originally opened with a sample from the movie Liar Liar, but now just opens immediately into the song, removing a lot of the punch of the original
The Faces mixtape by Mac Miller has faced a similar treatment to that of the Will Wood album, but on a more severe scale. The version of the album available on streaming has been gutted of many of it's samples (at least 9).
Intellectual Property & Profit Motive
Now, it's time to talk about how all these issues are an intrinsic part of capitalism. Capitalism as a system prioritizes one thing above all else, capital. Capital is itself a form of private property, and intellectual property is an idea or artistic expression turned into private property. The property holders will defend their right to profit off this property using the violence of the state, using the power of law to punish those who violate their property.
This become a problem for art when the profit motive gets involved. Profit is the driving factor behind all of these anti-preservation decisions we have discussed here today. With video-games, companies want to continue to indefinitely make a profit off of their old creations, but fail to offer an adequate way too, and often prioritizes only the cash cows. When the public tries to take this into their own hands, out of the love of art, they get punished. Their preservation is a threat, because they allow all games to be preserved and experienced freely, even the cash cows that corporations don't wish to abandon.
As for music, record labels (and in some of these cases film studios who own sound bites) want to profit off of royalties. When a song uses a sample, a good bit of the profit made on that song goes to the owners of royalty licenses, despite the fact that their intellectual property often makes up only a fraction of a truly transformational work. When they can't make their royalties, they leave the work to die.
Conclusion
Capitalism, primarily through the medium of intellectual property, a form of private property, actively disrupts the preservation of art. It seeks to destroy methods of preserving art that would eat into the profits of capitalist, without offering a viable alternative except when it seems financially beneficial to the capitalist.

The ultimate thing that plagued fandom is how Sonic's personality outside attitude wasn't cared for since day 1. The heavy US marketing 1991-4 is the only thing the fandom and general public truly cared
Even after 1995 marketing stopped the rivalry, game forums and reviewers still tacked the "Sega does what Nintendon't" slogan till 2008 at least!
It doesn't help how it took till 1995 for manual lore to properly be translated. Even then, no one read it, so they just assumed the only serious Sonic is Satam. It didn't help how the 1995-97 period was devoid of legit games for Saturn, a game collection being done because even in Japan general audiences barely remembered him
So with Saturn's failure everyone was salty to find Sonic changed for Adventure, and disrupted US/UK alt media for a true canon. While Adventure had its newfound fans, older ones were bitter because it did not fit their misinterpretation. Then SA2 was the last 1st party game Sonic had, and both older fans and reviewers truly soured view of him
The advent of 2000s fancomics and fan parodies were rife with extreme bias. Sonic himself was used as a speaking piece to diss later characters, to perpetuate the outdated Nintendo rivalry, to in short, be a dick and shape opinion, as well as encourage a heavy anti Sega mentality, while also treating fans like they know better. Sonic Retro and Cult were infamous for the toxicity
It's also why I can't fault 06 soley for rep at the time, reviewers and fans were shitting on anything not Genesis. Spinoff 2D titles were just ignored, Shadow 05 failed for rep despite it literally answering the fandom's yearning for guns, and everyone acted like Sonic wasn't himself anymore, despite Sonic Team's continuity despite being light was stable
The toxicity is so bad Sega supported it for the Sonic 4 campaign, even the incorrect mistranslation of "Needlemouse". I'm honestly glad the game failed for rep, it'd be disastrous if fans got verified thinking they can shape everything
I'm not surprised there's a huge pushback of revisting what were once hated games, though it's clear the fandom just took on traits of the previous gen for later games. It's the same shit.
Similarly, it's very clear the fandom doesn't want to evolve gameplay or lore. The amount of finished samey fangames since early 2000s is depressing. More unique ones rarely get out. It's why SAGE started none Sonic entries
Nostalgia of the past gen games also sadly ignores historical and economical context, lending to rose tinting. For every SMB3 on the NES, there were 30 trash NES games no one cared. YouTubers harmed game talk for a decade with the shortsighted ness and bias
Similarly people think all PSX games look like either MegaMan Legends or Crash, with 0 inbetween. It's sad
I feel Sonic discourse represents a core problem with the gaming fandoms: it doesn't matter how talented you are, you all are dissing and ignoring history and context for a cheap nostalgic quip. No wonder 2010s gaming got super nostalgia catering, same with Indie gaming
I'm sorry for potentially Doomposting, but at this point I can't think of any solutions to fix fandom
It's almost hard to believe given the anti-Pontaff sentiment these days, but once upon a time Colors was considered the saving grace of the series because it offered a "return to form" of the Classic formula of Sonic and Tails embarking on an adventure to stop Eggman. You remember? Pepperidge Farm remembers.
I feel like the "Sonic was never good" crowd have some kind of stick up their ass about the 3D games, but they don't want to come out and say as much for whatever reason. They subscribe to the idea that the Genesis games were the only good games, but the fact that they don't like Mania or Superstars either kinda tells me it's not the formula they like, but rather, the time period in which the Genesis games were made. A game that copies and polishes 3/4th of its content from the Classics somehow isn't good enough. It lacks the je ne sais quois of the original, they say, forgetting that the only difference is they aren't kids anymore.
Then ofc you get the real galaxy brains who contend that "Sonic was never good" because Sonic games... are linear... and require skill to build speed, as opposed to simply granting you speed right off the bat... And at some point, listening to them just gives you the creeping suspicion like they've never played a Viddy Game in their life. Somehow non-fans are after all these years still under the impression that Sonic games involve no skill, like it's just "boost to win" until you reach the end, and then they get mad when the game doesn't reward them for playing shittily lol.
---
It's also why I can't fault 06 soley for rep at the time, reviewers and fans were shitting on anything not Genesis. Spinoff 2D titles were just ignored, Shadow 05 failed for rep despite it literally answering the fandom's yearning for guns, and everyone acted like Sonic wasn't himself anymore, despite Sonic Team's continuity despite being light was stable Oof, I know. Sega really dug themselves a deep hole with the release of '06 and GBA!Sonic 1. Decades on, we still can't escape people saying "Sonic's had a rough transition to 3D," despite the transition occurring 25 years ago... A quarter-freakin'-century.
Also, I remember hearing they gave Shadow a gun because Sega was receiving letters from kids asking to give Sonic a gun. It's worth noting that CoD was really big at the time. ShTH!Sonic is a tad hyperactive, granted, but he's not terribly so to the point of flanderization. Fandoms be exaggerating. --- The advent of 2000s fancomics and fan parodies were rife with extreme bias.
You'd think porting SA2 over to the GameCube and the release of Advance 1 on the GBA would have put the kibosh on that, but old habits die hard, I suppose.
Personally, I don't remember seeing a whole lot of cynical, hardbitten Sonic in fan spaces outside of parody comics like inSONICnia, though it's possible that I just wasn't paying enough attention. What I do remember was seeing a lot of "Sonic's shitty friends." Namely, how there were too many of them, and how often non-fans called for them to die - sometimes going so far as to include Knuckles, Amy, and Tails! Like some people legitimately thought Sonic should have featured just Sonic and Eggman and no one else despite that never being the case since freakin' 1991.
The aughts were weird.

☂️-Komi Can't Communicate-☂️
•Komi Shouko- She reminds me a lot like myself with her social anxiety (expect mine isn't that bad) The show was really cute and she was probably my favorite because of.. everything :D
•I don't really remember a lot of the other characters, but I also thought Tadano was pretty silly and stuff heehe >:)
🔥-Chainsaw Man-🔥
•Pochita- Pochita is so silly and cute and silly and cute and I loved him.. Pochita is also very important so that's another reason aside from his silliness🧡
•Kobeni and Power- I thought Kobeni's whole reason for becoming a devil hunter in the first place was really sad and I felt bad for her, and I also just loved her scared and silly view of things. Power on the other hand is a character I love for her energy and personality. I was originally planning on being her for Halloween while my sister was going to be Makima, but things changed and she chose something else🥲
•Aki (forgor last name)- He's very bbg. All I have to say🔪🦊
🔪-Toilet-Bound Hanako-🔪
- (Warning! Simp Sakura up ahead!)
•This is what my mind is focused on 3/4 of my day. Just this show.. Do be warned, for all of my simp emotions will be taken out (mostly) on the upcoming list..
•Amane Yugi/Hanako- Loved both of them equally, given that they're technically two different people, but Amane holds a special place in my heart. His story was sad and traumatic, everything a good main character needs. Design, voice, story, character relationships, all of it. I love him❤️
•Kou Minamoto- Trying my best not to get too wild right now.. Literally every character in this show had an amazing English and Japanese voice, and he was probably one of my favorites. He is veeery bbg and deserves all of the love🎴
•Mitsuba Sousuke- Only @yuichiroleftarm knows what I mean when I say I love him.. The literal second he was introduced, it was like almost all of my mutuals with Muichiro.. Trust me when I say you don't wanna know how much I really love this guy.. I've said some things none of you guys will ever know🩷💀
•These are my top three, but if you ask me, pretty much everybody in the show is fine asf (Sakura swearing?) Still though, this probably surpassed my first love for Demon Slayer I'd say.. Still love both tho :')
------------------------------------------------------------
Closing Out
•This took way longer than it should have, but it was fun getting to write down a much more specific description about myself! Have a great day and stay safe out there :)))

I know it's a remake of an old GBA game, and many Donkey Kong fans are not happy about this because they don't like Mario being tied to Donkey Kong, I get it. But i'm genuinely looking forward to this. I never got to play the original. I kind of find the GBA to be tough to enjoy. Crunchy bad audio. Washed out colors on early games, faux 3D games such as this and the DKC ports look bad to me, Imo, the more GBA remakes the better ( Sonic Advanced trilogy fucking WHEN?? )
I notice a lot of DK fans are dejected and depressed today, the 10 year anniversary of Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze. I completely understand, it sucks when your favorite franchise goes dormant for so long. Especially when the "Revival" is still lacking a lot of things you loved from it's glory days. ( Kremlings, other Kongs, Animal Buddies, please come back. ), and any projects with Donkey Kong in them lately usually involve Mario... and as much as I don't like it, but kind of understand it, Donkey Kong fans are kind of touchy when it comes to Mario, Nintendo's golden child that will always have games in the works, who shares origins with DK, and there's always fighting about who is a spinoff of who ( the answer is neither but one is clearly more successful and central than the other regardless of personal feelings )
Despite how bad it may seem I will continue to remain optimistic.
I trust what DK vine is saying about a game being developed in house at Nintendo. I am a little nervous about that, because I don't feel like Nintendo themselves understand Donkey Kong fully, and have stupid misguided policies about character usage, but i'm hoping those are on their way out the door, and they realize that people really do love Rare's contributions to the series enough to bring them back...
But more than that, you can't look at all the little signs and not see that there's something going on with Donkey Kong that isn't going to stop at a remake of an old Mario and Donkey Kong crossover.
A Lego DK set with older Kong characters, DK being a central focus of the Mario movie, The Donkey Kong theme park opening at Universal Japan with lots of merchandise and depictions of Dixie, Crankie, Squawks, and an overhaul of Rambi ( and even Ellie the Elephant appearing in concept art ), the Donkey Kong webpage no longer leading back to the Tropical Freeze listing and now taking you to a general Donkey Kong page on My Nintendo Rewards, Diddy and Funky in Mario Kart 8, and the one that seems the most significant to me is that Donkey Kong merchandise has stopped using the "Super Mario" branding, and now uses the actual Donkey Kong logo. They would not be doing all this if Mario Vs Donkey Kong was all they had in the pipeline. They just wouldn't. Something is coming. And I think it's going to be a little bit bigger than what Retro Studios has done with the series so far.
Even if it doesn't, I'm not going to let that get me down, I'm a Nintendo fan, half the franchises I love are dormant. It's only a matter of time until something gets revived.

Here’s a drawing of my character, Shadow in his Kingdom Smash attire and this is a post when after you clear a mission or a quest. Like anyone can come up with their own pose anytime you clear a quest or a mission. But ever since i competed in the Smash Bros. Ultimate Tournament the other day when i went to the tournament instead of going to social club for the event that i didn’t want to do. So me and a friend of mine from Social Club got to compete in the Smash Bros. Ultimate Tournament and we did manage to go through a bunch of competitors. We both kept winning and we also got through the Semifinals. We both got into the finals, but then we both lost since you only get two chances. If you lose twice, then you’ll be eliminated. I didn’t rage or get angry, i manage to get through the tournament with being a good sport and in a simple manner. Anytime one of the people lose, i was like, “You’ve done well, good game.” *gives a handshake* And that’s what i did during the Smash Bros. Ultimate Tournament cause all i can use is Dark Pit and Fox in the game. Plus while i was at the tournament, i always kept thinking about the differences between playing Smash Bros. Or playing this RPG game Called Lost Kingdoms 2. If you guys don’t know what Lost Kingdoms is, it’s an RPG Card Game that is for the GameCube and both are them really Rare to find. Especially if you get them on eBay or from Amazon due to being really expensive. So i thought of this idea that if next time i want to do another story for Kingdom Smash, cause i know in Smash Bros, they use Trophies in Melee, Brawl, and Wii U and 3DS, and they now use Spirits in Ultimate, I thought of an idea of instead of like Trophies and Spirits, i though of using Cards like how Nintendo use to be a Playing Card company back in the 20th Century before they started making consoles. We can use the Cards that can be use if you want to summon any of the characters that look just like how the Spirits work. So i think i might add that until i can make a pack full of deck of cards. But i have to think of them in different colors. But people can still use their weapons like usual whatever you equip. So i hope next time i think i might add that if i get the chance. And that’s what i currently did when i went to compete in the Smash Bros. Ultimate Tournament. Cause the next Tournament is where i go to a different Center and play some Mario Kart by competing in the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Tournament. That’s what we’ll be doing next month during that game club event.

Random Idea junk drawer
So I had a great time doing my Wangxian-centric Breath of the Wild AU last year, and when I finished it I definitely left the epilogue open-ended enough to do more Zelda AU’s/Fusions in the future (I still don’t REALLY know how big the difference is between AU’s and Fusions and which one my other-content-inspired stuff usually counts as but I DIGRESS) because here’s the thing. The Thing(TM). Zelda games are my JAM. They were baby’s first special interest. Literally.
When I was 7 years old my parents bought a GameCube and a game disk that had 4 remastered Classic Zelda games on it (two 2D, two 3D) as well as a 20-minute playable demo for Wind Waker, with three different starting locations to choose from that you could play as many times as you wanted. And you bet my little 7-year-old ass played every bit of it that was within my skill level (which was not much lol), until I got my next Zelda game at 10 (that was Twilight Princess, and it was the first Zelda game I ever finished). I have the Wii walkthrough book for Twilight Princess that I bought used online and it reeked of cigarettes for months after I got it. I chose a screenshot of one of the characters out of it to paint on one of those horrible school industrial ceiling tiles in my 8th grade art class (sadly the photo of it is lost on an old dead phone, but it was really good, I mixed up all my own custom colors of paint and everything which was like. Impressive for 13 year old me :( ). I have and treasure the Hyrule Historia book. I had shitty ill-fitting graphic tees that said things like ‘Good things come to those who break clay pots’ (really funny to me now that I’m a ceramicist and could easily make pots for myself for the purpose of smashing if I were so inclined [I’m totally gonna]). I have massive Zelda tattoos on the insides of both forearms and I’m planning more so that I’ll hopefully end up with two Zelda half-sleeves. Like ZELDA IS MY THING. WHY I’m not writing more Zelda AU’s and playing around in my expanded sandbox of hyperfixations, I have no idea.
But anyway, I’ve started playing Ocarina of Time again, I have no idea how many times I’ve played it at this point within the last 19 years, and I’ve done it on every Nintendo console possible (except, ironically, the N64 as it was originally made for). So obviously I’m playing along and getting lost in the story because it’s a fuckin good story, as one does, and I was like ‘hey what if Wangxian tho’ and thus. Today’s junk drawer was born. Have I already started an outline of the fic plot points as well? Yes. Did I have to stop myself 800 words in and say that no I can’t just write out the entire plot tonight and no it can’t all go into this junk drawer post because I should actually just write the damn thing instead? Yeah. When will that happen? I don’t wanna think about it, so let’s just have fun talking characters and locations and their implications, shall we?
I’m going to post my notes completely unedited and let y’all see the whole ugly process, and I’m gonna put it below the cut because this is already long enough to scroll past but all I’ve done is gush about Zelda and in doing so further cement my well-established status as a huge fuckin nerd lol:
Jiangs/Lotus Pier as Kokiri Forest -- Deku Tree is Jiang Fengmian (Does this make Madam Yu the giant nasty spider inside????? ew)
- Wei Wuxian -- taken into LP/Kokiri Forest as a young child, young enough to fit in with the other children, but he'll soon be old enough for everyone to know that he isn't one of the lake/river children, he's from Elsewhere. - Jiang Cheng as Mido, small and angry and won't let anyone see JFM/YZY without really fucking good reason but also takes the leadership role in LP/Kokiri Forest once JFM/Deku Tree is dead - Jiang Yanli as Saria, gentle and sweet and fond of music and wandering through the woods that keep their lake hidden from the rest of the world. She'll awaken as a Sage in WWX's adulthood.
Cloud Recesses as Hyrule Castle, Lans are the Royal Family and Sheikah combined
- Lan Qiren as the king of Hyrule, though as the second brother he's supposed to be leading the Sheikah, not sitting on the throne - Lan Xichen (already in his 20's) as Impa. He'll awaken as a Sage in WWX's adulthood. Although he's supposed to be in line for the throne, someone has to be the leader of the Sheikah since LQR can't be, which leaves: - Lan Zhan as Princess Zelda -- plagued by dreams and visions of evil coming to take over the world, but no one takes him seriously because he's still so young. People also forget that in the line of succession he's supposed to be the one protecting the royal family as the next leader of the Sheikah, so it's actually his destiny to have these visions, not to be a politician. He sees in Wei Wuxian someone who's willing to break the rules and society's expectations to be the true hero he's been dreaming about. He'll take up the extremely active role of Wangji/Sheik as an adult, having learnt the Sheikah secrets under Lan Xichen's tutelage and taken up his rightful place as one of them since his escape from the palace as a child.
Kakariko Village -- inhabited by average people (akin to Caiyi town, close with the royal Lan family but not directly cultivators?)
Nies as Gorons in Death Mountain/Goron City/Nie Fortress
- Nie Mingjue as Darunia -- hot-tempered and built like the mountain, willing to swear brotherhood with the boy who came to save his people. He'll awaken as a Sage in WWX's adulthood. (NHS as the snot-nosed kid who hero-worships WWX in adulthood? lol)
Jins/Jinlintai as Zora's Domain -- The Zora are a proud people who live high above the rest of Hyrule at the top of their waterfall (tower). (Golden Carp Tower has a lot of water motifs and they decorate things in teal and gold like the zora do too)
- Jin Guangshan as King Zora - Jin Zixuan as Princess Ruto, eaten by their deity god (who is still a giant fuckin fish, I dunno what else he could be lol) and who thinks he has to be engaged to WWX after giving him the Sapphire (maybe because he was told from a young age he'd have to get engaged to one of the lake children anyway and just didn't know who/hint at unrealized Xuanli?) He'll awaken as a Sage in WWX's adulthood. - Jin Guangyao as (????? :( :( :( where will my boy go?? I need my boy for emotional support)
Wen Ruohan as Ganondorf -- a cruel king wreathed in shadow and flame....I mean it writes itself lol
- Baoshan Sanren as Rauru, the Sage of Light -- withdrew from the mortal world an unknowable amount of time ago to protect the Sacred Realm and has watched over WWX these last seven years as he slept. - Jiang Yanli as Saria, the Sage of Forest -- she awakens into her powers to protect her childhood friend/brother(s), though this will mean having to leave Jiang Cheng on his own in Lotus Pier - Nie Mingjue as Darunia, the Sage of Fire -- he awakens as a sage to honor the Brotherhood oath he swore with WWX in the past - Jin Zixuan as Princess Ruto, the Sage of Water -- he 'dumps' WWX because he has to do the more important work of stopping the apocalypse, try to contain your disappointment WWX, you can still be coworkers and save the world or whatever, if you even care. - Lan Xichen as Impa, the Sage of Shadow -- Lan Xichen must leave the mortal world behind to take up his mantle as the Sage of Shadow, leaving Lan Wangji to carry his worldly responsibilities instead (sort of half-retreating into seclusion like canon) - Wen Qing as Nabooru, the Sage of Spirit -- Wen Qing is the leader of the all-female band of Gerudo thieves who in no way endorse Wen Ruohan's domination of the world. When she leaves to take up her role as the Sage of Spirit, she leaves her cousin Wen Yun (my OC Madam Lan) to lead the Gerudo in her stead. (need to find a role for Wen Ning? Except zelda lore is that only one man is born to the Gerudo at a time every hundred years and he’s always their king. Maybe WN is meant to be the new one but WRH has reached immortality/won’t die and let him succeed him?)
Plot would follow Ocarina of Time fairly closely (Unlike my BOTW AU where I tried to make it...relatively more like canon??) because there's a very definite plot there, while BOTW is so much more fluid it was easier to adapt to something else.

Sonic Frontiers is Segas love letter to fans and a come back to what gaming used to be (At least so far...)
Tumblr media
I love Sonic, but I’m sure I speak for everyone when I say that the past decade or so has not been good for Sonic ever since 2006. Sonic in recent years has been notoriously memed upon for making empty promises and delivering in failure almost every time. With every installment of a new 3D Sonic game carrying promises of going back to its roots, to surpass the adventure series, etc... Only for those promises to be completely empty, void of any content that seemed to carry that promise or at the very least made that promise believable. Look back to Sonic 06, Sonic Unleashed, Sonic and the Secret Rings, and Sonic Forces, each of them flopped or at least never met up to expectations Each new iteration butchering what once were great characters, and making them shells of what they used to be. Knuckles for example has been reduced to a thick headed and rather naïve individual completely contrasting how he has been portrayed from older games.
Tumblr media
Or how self aware they are to how “Cool and Edgy Shadow is”
Tumblr media
Again, I love Sonic, but I’m aware of the flack the community gets for simply representing sonic as a loved franchise, usually met with cringe perceptions, OCs and the likes (To be fair I think almost every franchise has these things, but its not nearly as bad or well known as Sonic lol) But those predisposed conceptions aside, I can never devalue what Sonic has done not just for me growing up but for the era of gaming itself. Sega used to be a contender against Nintendo in the console wars, Sonic being the counter part towards Mario. But as time progressed and technology for gaming evolved, Sonic more and more became a character that would not stand as a rival to nintendo, what with the failing of the Dreamcast console (My personal favorite console of all time imo) Although the Dreamcast had failed, The Sonic Adventure series cemented the character into something much bigger and better than a contender to Nintendo.
Tumblr media
Sonic was already iconic but now with the adventure series, Sonic was now iconic in the 3D realm of gaming, releasing banger after banger with SA2, Sonic Heroes, and well..... that's kind of it :(
Tumblr media
Its sad to say, but Sonics reign in the 3D era of gaming was very short lived, as soon after the notorious Sonic The Hedgehog (Sonic 06) would come out as the debut game for most Xbox 360 players, it failed miserably. I’m sure I don’t need to preface what those misgivings were, as this isn’t really a post meant to analyze this but more so a genuine hype post for what could be a great Sonic game, so if you want to see those flaws you can find it HERE But while I say SA2 and Heroes were the only real good 3d sonic games, I mainly meant it as a game that is widely accepted as a great 3d sonic game, Generations, colors and unleashed are enjoyed but not without its flaws which steered people away from completely enjoying it. At this point Sega plunged Sonic into a confusing mess of mediocrity with games like
Tumblr media Tumblr media
^Honestly **** this game lol
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not to say I didn’t enjoy these, I genuinely enjoyed Riders and Black Knights, but what these game did is lead Sonic into a continuity mess. What people wanted was either a continuation of the Adventure story line (Which both Heroes and Shadow the Hedgehog did) or a completely new 3D Sonic game with elements of the Adventure series with it. But instead, time after time we were given none of that, more than a decade has passed, and what Sonic seemed to have been reduced to was simply a mascot entirely kid friendly that made its money being an avatar for the balloons and hats at a kids parties (This is an exaggeration obviously....sorta)
Tumblr media
At this point, calling a soon to be released Sonic game trash, or even sonic itself isn’t anything entirely new to the franchise, I’m sure if you look in the right places you’ll see it People complaining about how constantly the Sonic franchise has failed, and how Sonic adventure was the peak for the series, ridiculing and trashing a new Sonic game before its release, etc... However recently Sonic has returned to the limelight in the strangest way possible
Tumblr media
I believe it was these movies that spurred the creation or at the very least how much thought is being put into the newest installment to the Sonic Franchise (Sonic Frontiers) With the success of the 1st movie, its possible Sonic Team put their foot down and decided to get their ass in gear for what some are saying could be the biggest Sonic comeback of all time
A year later, Sega drops a very short teaser of Frontiers
Tumblr media
I have to admit, at first this TEASER frustrated me
Perhaps I’m spoiled and was used to the massive content dump that Nintendo dropped on us last second as they do with every one of their reveals, but I was expecting something a little more than just a 30 second clip of Sonic running.
I sat at my screen, stating “what a waste of time that was”
But I was curious, hesitant for sure but genuinely curious, at the very least what was shown seemed to be.... different?
You see, unless you’re a notorious gaming title like Final Fantasy where you show a simple 30 second clip with no content would you be able to garner hype and expectation much like Square did with the FF7 Remake teaser back in E3 of 2015.
While Sonics failure is what most fans currently knew it as, it was strange for Sega to do this, normally I would think that in order to gain the most attention possible for a franchise that is widely doubted on, they would need to show more of the game to sell, but something about what they did struck a chord with me that made me curious to see where it was going, but I was genuinely expecting it to flop like the rest.
Tumblr media
A year later and we get a NEW TEASER of some gameplay of Sonic Frontiers, at this point we know that Frontiers is an open world game much like Zelda Breath of the Wild, definitely a point of interest for me not to mention that the graphics and presentation are very beautiful. At this point, the game seemed interesting enough to warrant trying it out, but I was still on the thought that this game will more than likely flop but I would at least try it as it is a new genre that Sonic is delving into (Open world)
Tumblr media
I’m sure I speak for everyone when I say that one of the biggest and recognizable things in the 3D era of sonic is that it had amazing music, but their lyrical songs stood the test of time forever.
As cringe as Sonic became, songs like City Escape, Live and Learn, His World, etc... were extremely iconic to an era of where Sonic was an enjoyable franchise
After Sonic 06 while the newer games had good music, I can’t say they struck the same chord with everyone much like the Adventure series did.
However, on September 8th 2022 Sega released the OPENING of Sonic Frontiers and it was WIDELY accepted
“Regardless of how Frontiers turns out “I’m Here” and “Vandalize” are phenomenal songs that fit Sonic remarkably well.” - Yearlong Fi-Sci
“I don't want to start any arguments about "eras" but to me, this song is exactly what Sonic...Is. Triumph, heroic, high action fantasy. It makes me so happy to hear a Sonic song like this in this day and age.” - Doctor Minjinx
This game is gonna give off early 2000’s vibes, I can tell. Sonic hasn’t been this badass since his unleashed days - Lil XancheX
I’ve had this song on loop since I started writing this post haha Not only did the song sound great but it was lyrically powerful with dark and mature undertones for a franchise that is mostly geared towards the demographic of children. Something about the choice of its style called out to me that Sega or at least the team behind this games production is trying to get the attention of older Sonic fans with a title like “I’m here” and the style in which the song created itself from. The song itself as Lil XancheX commented gives off early 2000s vibes which further adds to the thought that this game is more and more starting to feel like Sega is making an attempt to reach out to Adventure fans of old. The song alone made me very excited for the games release, what once used to be doubtful expectations became genuine anticipation as more and more content is shown/teased to us.
Tumblr media
At the time of writing this post, Sega had released an ANIMATED PROLOGUE to Frontiers starring Knuckles the echidna. And besides how well animated the prologue was, what stuck to me the most was the characterization of Knuckles and how it harkens back to the Sonic 3 and Adventure era of Knuckles. In Adventure and here knuckles is introspective and alone as he usually is, not extremely air headed or expressive as he has been in recent titles, but as he always has been in an era where Sonic was loved. “I do things on my own, that's just how I like it, I don’t need anyone else to get by...but sometimes” - Knuckles As much as I want to gush about the references the prologue makes to the adventure series, with the chaos, Tikals light, Sky Sanctuary and the flashbacks of Adventure, I believe I made my point regardless
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I truly wish I had more concrete things to say that could solidify this game as genuinely good, but unfortunately the game won’t be out until next week ^^; I just wish to preface that I am not trying to say that Sonic Frontiers will be the next best thing, or that it will even be a good game void of the flaws of previous sonic games. But I’m hopeful for it. From its first teaser all the way to the animated prologue we received today I’ve found my excitement and anticipation grow more and more, with each reveal/teaser leaving more to be desired with a great delivery regardless of that. The game looks beautiful, music already sounds great (Which is to be expected of a sonic game) and the story line seems interesting and compelling which is a big win for me. And looking back, this is what I missed about gaming. I can’t remember the last time I was anticipating any small bit of detail of a soon to be released game, filled to the brim with references and quality content, created with what I believe to be utmost care to fans of new and old alike, BUT ESPECIALLY OLD LOL This may just be an old man rambling, but I personally feel that this current age of gaming is extremely stale, with nothing new coming out that is genuinely worth being excited about But a sonic game??? SONIC?! Of all games, Sonic is the one that is making me feel the excitement I longed for in gaming for what felt like an eternity? The last time I was anticipating a game with trailers and what not was Nier Automata and if not that then Final Fantasy XV (13 Versus for the old men and women out there ;) ) Again, I’m not trying to make such bold claims that Frontiers is going to revive the Sonic franchise, but the hype and attention it is garnering is undeniable. The methods in which the Sonic Team is using to promote their game, referencing the beloved Adventure series, with music and characterization of Sonic from early 2000s era is Sega sending a love letter to old fans, the greatness that Sonic fans have been asking for ever since the failure of 06, and the methods in which they’re revealing the games story line, gameplay, music is something I haven’t seen a game do in a long time, much less a Sonic game. I tip my hat to the folks at Sega and Sonic Team, whether the game flops or succeeds... I acknowledge, respect, and genuinely love the amount of effort being put into the games promotional content. It has been so long since I was able to feel the heart and soul behind a production, the care and attention to detail that goes into an already loved franchise.
This is a part of gaming I’ve missed so much, this is a part of Sonic that I’ve missed so much.
Needless to say, I already pre-ordered the deluxe edition of the game, and I can’t wait to see what the game is going to be like next week This post was made in the spur of the moment of my excitement so perhaps I may look back at this and cringe, but the feelings in this very moment are true and feelings I don’t feel too often, Its moments like these I live for in both gaming and anime, and I hope that I am able to experience many more like it again. Thank you all for reading, I hope you all enjoy this game ^^

My Thoughts On: Virtual Console
I don't think I've done this yet?
Hey there, it's Alex! Wow, seems like all my blog posts are about a decade late to the discussion? I mean, even the whole idea of a blog like I'm running feels dated in a bygone era. Oh well, i don't really care, this is fun!
I love Virtual Console! The idea of playing all your favorite older games digitally on a more modern console at a fraction of the original price is revolutionary! The Virtual Console brand started with the Wii Shop Channel where you could purchase them using Wii Points (that's a whole topic unto itself) for previous Nintendo platforms, such as the NES, SNES, and N64, but some third-party support came in the form of Sega's Master System and Mega Drive/Genesis, SNK, and even Commodore 64, what? They had some pretty niche games on here, but also many of the biggest titles like all the 2D Mario games, Metroid, Zelda, pretty much anything you could ask for! They were missing some classic N64 games like Banjo-Kazooie for obvious licensing reasons with developer Rare's acquisition by Microsoft, and GoldenEye 007 which recieved a Wii remake. Other games like Earthbound or Panel de Pon weren't available because they hadn't yet reached the level of popularity they hold now (especially in Earthbound's case).
Quick tangent here, but I still think the DSi should have gotten Virtual Consoles. I mean, it already had an eShop! There were DSiWare games being developed just like WiiWare games! Plus, they removed the famous Gameboy Advance slot (or "Slot 2" as it's officially called), so this would be the perfect opportunity to make users repurchase their favorite GBA games, and maybe GB/GBC games that were previously unplayable on the DS, and install them on the DSi! They probably could have squeezed NES and maybe SNES VCs on there too if they tried. This was such a huge missed opportunity that would've added validity to the DSi, and could've truly pushed the DS to being one of the best consoles ever, even more so than it is now. But I digress, moving on!
After the Wii came the 3DS, sporting the 3DS eShop and, you guessed it, portable Virtual Console! Yes, finally, handheld VC titles! The 3DS ended up having Gameboy, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance (exclusive to Ambassador Program), NES, SNES (New 3DS only), Sega Master System, and Sega GameGear.
The GBA Virtual Consoles only had a small handful of titles released alongside the eShop, and were only available to download for free by members of the Ambassador Program, users who bought their 3DS systems before the price was cut a few months after release. They later introduced SNES Virtual Console, which is amazing! But instead of putting in effort, they said "Oh, uh, the old 3DS isn't strong enough to run SNES games, you need a NEW 3DS" and really? Is it too weak? You mean if I open my original model 3DS right now I won't see a fully functional homebrew SNES Virtual Console collection? Really? Moving on...
After the 3DS, Nintendo quickly released the WiiU as their new home console! This too featured an eShop, and Virtual Console! This time, GBA was available to everyone! They also added DS Virtual Console, which is very cool in my opinion! From what I hear it wasn't executed very well, but that's such a unique idea! They also added certain Wii titles to be downloaded and installed, sort of like a VC, but not part of that brand. Those will forever be in a state of purgatory...
And finally, we come to the Nintendo Switch, and... nothing. Nintendo has completely done away with the Virtual Console brand, and broken my heart. Instead, if you sign up for Nintendo Switch Online, their online gaming service, you get access to NES and SNES apps loaded with a bunch of retro games, but most of them are just random things most people don't care about. If you upgrade to the NSO Expansion you get N64 and Sega Mega Drive/Genesis apps, but again, so far there's just not enough games to warrant the huge price jump of the Expansion. So far there's not a whole lot of value to the service, and we're still waiting on more to justify it. Personally, I'm thinking GameCube would be good candidates for this line, and a GC app would make me instantly upgrade!
As a more recent update, Gameboy was added to NSO, and Gameboy Advance as a part of the Expansion! This is a great step forward, but its not everything they need to add value to the Expansion. Still, good job, Nintendo!
The Virtual Console name has a lot of history to it, and a lot of fond memories from gamers such as myself who remember downlaoding and playing all sorts of games on Wii and 3DS from older consoles. Today, as the brand has been done away with on Switch, and the 3DS/WiiU eShops closing, it seems that era is ending... but don't forget! With homebrew you cans till find the installable files online and put them on your console! There's also tools to make your own custom injects for the 3DS! We can still enjoy new VC for many years to come with these wonderful tools from dedicated developers.
Thanks for reading, and be sure to ask questions and suggest new post ideas in my ask box! Stay safe, stay hydrated, and God bless! Happy gaming to ya!
~ Alex

2022 Art Summary
it is that time of the year again, folks. this year has felt like forever and so short simultaneously. it’s felt like nothing and everything was happening. it was a weird year for me, probably because for the most part it was rather monotonous. but there were some good things to look back on, and as per usual i’m here to round it up here for you all to look at and enjoy :3
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i’ll be honest. i was really worried about the art summary this year at first because these first few months were so sparse. i even considered just condensing the whole thing into quarters since this one was so lacking. but as the year went on, the more things i had to share, so for sake of brevity i will be putting the first three months up all at once
included in this quarter are assorted Cosmic Legacy character sketches, a Genshin Impact sona to continue the trend i had wanted to set at the end of 2021 (which i did not continue afterward), a lil valentine’s day present to my girlfriend, and a shiny form for my sona that was just part of a inside bandwagon. not much to say otherwise :/
the one major thing that happened in the first few months of 2022 was that i FINALLY. GOT MY HANDS. ON A NINTENDO SWITCH. I CAN NO LONGER MEME ABOUT BEING SWITCHLESS
so that was pretty exciting :>
the release of Pokemon Legends: Arceus is what broke me, but before i played that i started off with a blind nuzlocke of Pokemon Shield, which is what the lil digital doodle in March is about; i had just caught a Stunky i named Wasabi and i was indifferent to Stunky up until catching him where i just fell in love with it
Tumblr media
so, AI art, huh? this was when it was burgeoning, and still fun and popular to make. so when i saw some people using a 3d pokemon generator i made a whole bunch and gave it a go. i generated about 30 of them and hadn’t quite gotten to around a third of that, but the few i did were really fun to draw!
(the lil gremlin one at the top corner is uncolored here bc when i did try to color it my brain fully glitched and screwed up royally so i opted out of showing my failure here lol)
Tumblr media
so my friend Cake started streaming a game called Your Turn to Die with me and our partner Stacey during the spring starting in late March, and it was such an incredible time that i miss being a part of (if you wanna watch our full playthrough, the vods are saved on her channel here)
so towards the end of our playthrough i decided to try my hand at drawing some stuff because my brain could not simply hold all of my feelings for them
i am definitely not biased because i played both Keiji and Rio Ranger in the stream, but i sure did like them a lot, and it was really fun to draw them :>
Tumblr media
had a lot of cosmic drawings this month, most likely due to celebrating the One Year Anniversary of the concept at the beginning of the month! we celebrated with a cute little collab. i happened to continue the cosmic train on my end by coming up with a funny meme video idea (that we will get back to multiple times later on) and i also worked on a couple pieces in preparation for an upcoming event in the next month...
Tumblr media
I FINALLY REMEMBERED TO SIGN UP AND PARTICIPATE IN ARTFIGHT FOR THE FIRST TIME
it was a really fun event but i did not anticipate how late i would start my entries and how much time it would take to do them well, so i only got a few out, but i’m really proud of them! it was awesome to see all these brain children of random people from all around, and to get a couple responses back of my own as well! i’m excited to give it another go next year :3
Tumblr media
i did not get a whole lot of art things done this month because MY GIRLFRIEND (and her roommate) CAME FROM OVERSEAS TO VISIT!!
Tumblr media
it was such a great time being with them, and we had so much going on i didn’t get much opportunity to do much, but that was fine. one thing, related to my partner actually, is my pokemon gym trainer sona here! Stacey had been thinking about a fakemon region and wanted her friends as gym leaders, so i offered myself as a ground-type trainer, since it’s one of my favorite types and is rather underrated
a little more work got done on the cosmic meme video, and a couple other lil doodles. not much else artwise, but an awesome month regardless :3
Tumblr media
idk why this month was so lacking, cuz this is pretty much all i had lol
the one decent sketch of my sona being angy was inspired by a post i found on here that was like... if you were a villain in a movie, what song would be playing at the point you would snap
and the choice i made was Faint by Linkin Park cuz it seemed applicable. and then my brain decided to listen to it on repeat and i ended up drawing that sketch. so that was cool :0
Tumblr media
as per usual i do at least attempt to do an october art challenge, and this time i wanted to try this year’s annual list from Thomas Sanders, and it was pretty fun! i was really into it the first week, but then i got behind and after that point many of the prompts didn’t hold my attention, so... i trailed off. again
but! i do really like these ones in particular. didn’t really have much else after that so i’m glad i had fun with those
Tumblr media
again this is p much all i had - november was a pretty nice time actually, with lots of gaming stuff going on with me n friends, but not so much art stuff was going on then
after having completed playing pkmn shield back in june, i tried my hand at pkmn legends pretty much right after that... and it didn’t quite click with me, though i did really like it. and then over the next few months i got back into pkmn go and that’s when i realized That’s more like what legends is about - it just screwed me up coming from a regular pkmn game. so, this month, i picked it up again and i’ve gotten much farther and much more attached!
in addition, later in the month my friends and i got back into playing stardew valley after nearly a year’s hiatus, and we made our characters based on the main trio in Cosmic Legacy, and so i drew Lalun with a parsnip. it was funny
and speaking of cosmic and video game things, Sonic Frontiers came out and i... did not get that one (though i will one day cuz it looks rad) BUT one of my friends got super into it and got me hooked on one of the songs, and then the part of my brain that associates fandom stuff with songs (a rarely triggered part of my brain) started to tie that to [REDACTED] here, as inspiration for their character. maybe. idk but the song gave me vibes that they could definitely have and i thought it was cool and i made a cool art with it too so yay
Tumblr media
and here we are, at the end of the year! the sonic hype train was still rolling so i thought about giving them another go and they turned out pretty good! and i pumped out some more pokemon content at the very end to inflate this month’s art stuff a lil bit more
OH YEAH and that cosmic meme got finished just in time for crimmis! here is the link to that since i would not post it here
all in all it’s been. a year, to say the least. i am definitely looking forward to new things in the new year, but this one had been pretty alright. lots of fun and memorable things that hopefully i can continue doing similarly in the future :3

AFTERTHOUGHTS - ROUNDUP ROUND 9
December 2023
Woohoo! 2024 is here! Happy New Years, gamers! There's not much from 2023 left for me to talk about, so I figure the sooner the better. Once I've shared my thoughts on the last few games, we can start 2024 off with a clean slate!
I played a bit of stuff in December, but overall the month was a little bit slower as I kind of hit a wall with hobbies. But still managed to get some stuff done so it's no big deal! As such there's still a good handful of games to talk about.
And like every time, no reviews, just my thoughts. Please play ANYTHING I talk about here and get your own opinion on it! Thank you!!
Crystal Chip Collecter e (December 7, 2023) - Nintendo Switch
This one was a big surprise to me! A friend of mine came to me with a free code for this game cause we both work with the creator, and they wanted me to have a copy of it! I even got to play it early, isn't that nice? I was very thrilled and played it right away! This is a simple puzzle platformer where you jump around collecting Crystal Chips (see the title). But you can only collect one color at a time, and have to flip switches to be able to collect the other colors. Sounds easy, right? WRONG! This game is surprisingly tough! Each world has to be beaten within 3 lives, and while that's just 10 very short levels, it's still a tough challenge! Thankfully the game also has surprisingly tight movement (just be sure to play with the D-PAD and NOT the joystick) and is very well made. It's got some really good sprites and fantastic music. And where this game is a lot better than other games that require perfection, is that they let you practice the levels. Just seeing a stage, not beating it, unlocks it for practice. Meaning you can try a problem stage risk free for the actual run. So many brutal hard games could really do with a feature like this.
My only main complaints is that the levels can get a little confusing, but overall that's probably gonna be different person to person. And also I wish the minigames at the end of a run were different, so you aren't just cleaning out the fans every time. But other than that, a short and sweet platformer! Check this one out for sure!
Tumblr media
Dead or Alive Series (2004 - 2019) - Xbox 360 / Xbox One
Next up we don't just have one game, but a full series. My sister has been a big DoA fan for a while now, and on her birthday we helped her complete her collection of the full main series! And well, they're in my house... So I might as well give them a go too, right? Personally I've never been a big fan of 3D fighting games, but I still have enough fun with them. And these games were the same way. Not really my cup of tea but I still had a good time with them. My favorite character is Hitomi, but I played as my second favorite, Tina, for the games prior to Hitomi's creation. I think the biggest thing I have to say about the series on a whole is that it is DAMN good looking! Every entry, even back on the PS1, have really really good graphics. And by the time you hit Xbox, they look really stunning and age remarkably well. I was seriously blown away with the graphics in these games and genuinely suggest you take a look at all of them sometime. The second, and the biggest and best fighting game feature introduced later into the series: sweat. Your characters will sweat during matches and their clothes become a little see through. This is the best fighting game feature of all time and I need ALL games to jump on this. All I'm saying is that if the next Smash features Peach and Snake in tight white t-shirts and they sweat a bunch, the game might be the best selling game of all time.
I actually thought a lot of the sexy stuff in this game was fine, I know it's known for being horny but I think a lot of the characters are genuinely sexy so it's fine. While I love seeing hot wrestler girls and chicks with giant wings being sexy, some of my biggest issues with the series stem from this horniness. Number 1, they pull that N/A age shit too much. I think by the time you're on DoA 6 everyone is 18. But still, dude. Stop it. Second, is the jiggle physics. I love a good jiggle physic. But idk it's not really sexy when they're going absolutely insane. And where are the butts? Please for DoA 7 consider giving more characters huge butts and lets put some buldge jiggle physics in, thanks.
But overall I'd say this series gets my seal of approval. Now if only it was a 2D fighter. But that's what Skullgirls is for I guess.
I will also mention that I could NOT beat DoA4 to save my life. Had to play on Normal which doesn't SOUND that bad but the game totally kicked my ass, I could not beat the Arcade ladder. Embarassing.

Cthulhu Saves Christmas (December 23, 2019) - Nintendo Switch
Another day, another Zeboyd Games certifies banger. As I'm sure you're all aware by how I never shut up about them on twitter, I really like this studio. They've quickly become one of my favorite indie devs of all time for their fantastic and unique RPGs. Sometime in 2022 I believe I played Cthulhu Saves the World, so naturally the next step was to play Saves Christmas! Which serves as a sort of prequel. This was a fun little game for me personally as it almost feels like a medley of everything else they've put out. A lot of the mechanics for avoiding combat from Breath of Death VII + Saves the World, the core combat and gameplay from Cosmic Star Heroine + This Way Madness Lies, and even having a system very similar to the episodic scenes in TWML despite coming out first. It's neat especially if you're playing it last of all their games like I did. The way the game works is rather than having multiple towns and shops, you do little bond building scenes with certain characters for items and weapons, and then at the end of a week, you're shoved off into a dungeon where the more traditional RPG stuff starts. The characters are all holiday themed, the story about saving Santa is cute, and fighting the legion of Christmas evil made up of various evil Christmas characters was fun! It has the same combat style as Cosmic Star Heroine, a personal favorite indie RPG, so I had a good time with it. And while it's not as good as CSH, it does have some unique gimmicks to help itself stand out. In particular, I really loved the madness moves, where you cannot pick your final 3 attacks and they are instead randomized during the fight. It can be a little annoying but I thought it was a neat idea that mostly proved to be very fun!
My only real complaints about this game is how it handles skipping combat. CSC uses random encounters, which yknow, a lot of people don't like. I get it, so having options to skip it is fine. BoD7 + CSTW get around this by stopping random encounters after you've fought enough battles, but still letting you activate fights yourself if you want. I liked it, it was a neat system. But this game also adds in the ability to scare away encounters by pressing 'A' when an '!' appears above your head. This is neat, but ultimately if you mash A when the meter that tells you when an encounter is gonna happen is high, you will NEVER get into an encounter. And ultimately I just feel like having all this kind of ruins the point of random encounters. Especially in a game with nonstandard maps like this, I feel like all this skipping could potentially brickwall a player if they get too crazy about skipping fights. At this point, why not just use enemies you see on the overworld like CSH before it? Thankfully, TWML does make that change.
It's short and simple, so if you're looking for something to play when Christmas comes in a little over 300 days, you can certainly do worse! But I do still think it's maybe the weakest of the Zeboyd games library, though I doubt it was ever meant to be their masterpiece or anything like that.

Little Inferno (November 19, 2012) - Wii U
A game my siblings have been BEGGING me to play for ages. I had the Wii U hooked up for... some reason I can't really recall now. And figured I could play through it really quickly in an evening just for fun. And, hey, you know what? I rather enjoyed it! Little Inferno is a very simple game where you just... burn stuff in a fire place. You order things, burn things, thing drops money, order more things. Again it's very simple but it's fun for sure! The game also encourages you to combo things together and experiment with reactions between burning things so you can unlock more catalogues (ultimately how you beat the game.) The game is very goofy, kind of morbid, but ultimately I'd say pretty cute and interesting. I don't really have a lot to say here aha. I love Sugarplumps, I thought the plot was interesting, it's got a fun art style that can be kinda creepy when it wants, similarly with the music. I think my only issue is the wait times for stuff to be delivered to you to burn. But again the game is so short that I feel like it's almost a non issue.
Regardless, neat little game! I totally understand why my siblings were so into it. Using the game pad to burn stuff was also very fun. And I liked that if you lined the teriminoes up, they would instantly destroy themselves :)
Tumblr media
Bayonetta (October 29, 2009) - Wii U
Bayonetta... Oh my god, Bayonetta. If you looked at my games of the year, this was a runner up for one of my favorite games I played in 2023. And I think the ONLY reason I didn't put it on the main list is because I'm not the biggest fan of 3D beat em' ups like this. But holy shit this game was SO good! Bayonetta is an insane, unapologetically crazy, stupid, and over the top adventure that's just fun and wild the entire way through!
Bayonetta follows the titular character as she battles her way through hordes of freaky looking angels in an effort to recover her lost memories. That's right, we've got an Amnesiac Edgy Badboy Protagonist. This game just hits every nail RIGHT on the head! The story is pretty cool and has some really interesting moments like time shenanigans and bringing back the creator. But the plot can be a little hard to follow if I'm being honest, mostly because it's told a little out of order. But where the game REALLY shines is with all the crazy set pieces that make the story shine even when it's tough to understand. Fighting Jeanne on a skyscraper, fighting a giant Angel 10 times the size of Bayonetta, the super over the top motorcycle level! The game has COUNTLESS incredibly cool and over the top scenes! There's almost no moments where the game didn't make my jaw drop or at least make me smirk from the nonstop over-the-top action and goofy moments. Genuinely the game is such a treat start to finish, flashy combat, crazy enemies, some brutal torture attacks, fun cast. Even the little girl character is cute and funny and isn't annoying. Can Bayonetta do no wrong?
Well, I did have SOME issues with it. Aside from my usual "3D Brawler Combat wanting you to remember doing moves with inputs like 'ABABABBBBAAAAAAABBBBBXYYYAAABBBB' for one attack". The game is a little brutal. I managed to play the first few levels on Normal like I wanted, but by the time I reached the burning city stage, I could NOT win the fights. You're expected to witch time with insane accuracy that I just couldn't do. And as such I had to play the rest of the game on easy which made the game feel TOO easy. I think not making combos automatic maybe would've helped with that. But oh well, I still had a great time.
There's still more I could compliment the game on in terms of how over the top and cool it was. Bayo can turn into a Panther? THAT'S SO BAD ASS WHY ISN'T THAT IN SMASH? The cover of Fly Me To The Moon is SO good! And this is another great example of a game that's so insanely horny but is actually fun and I feel like it's justified because Bayonetta is incredibly sexy and it never tries to sell itself as something else. The game knows EXACTLY what it's doing, it does it well, and it's hot! Bayonetta is a new honorary edgy badboy made in a lab, I love her. I cannot wait to play Bayo 2!
Tumblr media
WarioWare: Move It!! (November 3, 2023) - Switch
Another year, another WarioWare it seems! Last time we had Get It Together, which turned out to be a surprisingly fun game. My biggest issue with it though is that it truly felt like a WarioWare that could've been on ANY console. And as such didn't feel like a TRUE Switch entry for the series. But I'm very happy to say that Move It fixes that little issue RIGHT up!
Move It is straight up a Switch WarioWare game, no ifs ands or buts about it, this is a game that could have only worked on this console. Which is what I love about this series, I want them to be like crazy tech demos. And the Switch itself has not done a super good job of capitalizing on its unique controller, so it's great to see WarioWare step up and fix this issue. By bringing back the form gameplay from Smooth Moves, they're able to use the Joycons SO well. You can always cheat them for the most part, sure, but I think actually putting your whole pussy into it truly makes the game fun! And the game really did impress me with some of the forms, namely the Hand Model form which actually makes use of the Joycon IR camera. Which is INSANE, is there any other game on the console that does this outside of that nightvision game on the Eshop? THAT'S NUTS! They're actually making use of Joycons! That's so cool!
And of course the game itself is very fun, chaotic, and cute. As you'd expect. There's lots of fun microgames (my favorite is the Mario 64 Slide one, but there's a lot of great ones like the one where you're a model trying to find the cameras or the Pinball Land one). The cutscenes are fun and really goofy. I liked the plot and particularly the final level was REALLY cool.
I do have some issues with it though. Like, the Pounce Form is a little... Overkill. I understand what they're going for but the idea is to NOT have objects around me. I can't just whip up a table that quickly for select Microgames. And you CAN crouch down, sure, but during this fast paced game? No thank you! This form I had to cheat a lot by just holding it in my hands. I also felt like the story was too short! It's over in a flash especially with the Second Chance Stance that lets you regain all your lives and continue a level as many times as you want. I think it's a good feature but it does make it TOO easy if you can do it infinitely, yknow? And so many of the characters are lumped together, I feel like you could've split them up to make way more levels. Even Get It Together was considerably longer I feel. However, Move It is absolutely quality over quantity so I get it.
Overall, a fun game and a nice return to form (ha) for WarioWare I think! Not the perfect game but, yknow, we can't all be Wario Land yknow (please guys we're fast approaching the 20 year anniversary of Shake It YOU CAN'T KEEP DOING THIS TO USE PLEASE MAKE A NEW WARIO ADVENTURE GAME)
Tumblr media
Sonic Superstars (October 16, 2023) - Switch
Last but not least, another Sonic game! I play them a bunch I just really love this series lol. Sonic Superstars was a game I thought looked pretty neat when it was announced. It looked like NSMB for Sonic! Which sounds wonderful! However, when it came out, I wanted Mario Wonder just a little bit more, so Superstars kinda passed me. But I thankfully got my hands on it for Christmas and had a pretty good time with it!
It's got all the basic good stuff I can say. Great music, really nice visuals, and it's fun to play! Where the game particularly shines is that it has multiple playable characters! I'm always glad whenever Sonic doesn't shy away from this. Each character has their own unique abilities which is great! My personal favorite was Amy because, well she's rarely playable ever, and I thought the double jump was SUPER useful. I played the whole game as her in her modern dress. And I honestly think Classic Amy dressed like Modern Amy might be my new favorite design for her! And of course I love the new characters, Trip is adorable and I'm SO glad to have a new reptile Sonic character! AND SHE TURNS INTO A DRAGON!?!? COME ON THIS IS MADE FOR ME SPECIFICALLY!
My only big issues with the game is that I think it doesn't really live up to its full potential? Like a lot of classic sonic stuff, it takes SO many stage themes and mechanics from previous classic sonic games. It's particularly disappointing here because when the game introduces new mechanics I LOVE it! Like the Break-Out sections or the rewinding level or the whole Fantasy Zone section. But I feel like a lot of these at least felt few and far in between. Similarly, those Chaos Emerald powers are just kind of nothing. I barely used them during the whole playthrough. I think smaller abilities that had more immediate use similar to the badges in Mario Wonder would be better. But there's absolutely potential for the concept! I also thought Trip's story was a little long in the tooth because it's so similar to the first story but with longer boss fights.
And I want to talk about the boss fights a little bit. I remember seeing EVERYONE complain about the bosses but I have to be honest. They were not that bad. Maybe I'm just spoiled from how horrible the Sonic 4 bosses were. But I thought Superstars boss fights were fine. With the exception of the three "final bosses". Those fights are all REALLY cool but they are SO insanely long. And they have some kind of brutal insta-kill attacks too. Which honestly I could look past if there was a check point in the fights because without them the fights take FOREVER. The final Fang the Sniper fight felt like it took AGES just for him to wrap up basic animations to me. I was talking about all this with a friend and they did bring up a good point that the fights are actually kind of easy if you remove all that. But I have to say that just a basic checkpoint between phases would NOT make them any easier in my opinion. The phases in these 3 fights are SOOOO long that having to survive the second phase without any rings would still be insanely tough in my opinion. But, at least they're fun unlike Sonic 4's absurdly long and boring boss battles.
That's basically it. I don't have a ton to say but overall I thought this game was fine! I remember a lot of people saying it wasn't good back when it launched but honestly I really do think it's okay. Maybe not the most mind blowing or exciting game ever made but I had a good time with it. It's mid at worst I'd say. And it gave us a thorny devil character soooo.... It gets my seal of approval.

Light and color work on Super Mario Bros Movie is insane.
Also, the running through Brooklyn scene is obviously a 3D to 2D thing. They cannot represent reality from the perspective of the player, as they do on the videogames, where multiple things happen around you, and they have to squeeze these into 2D cinema, which forces them to use a frontal shot, and what would be a travelling of how Mario and Luigi go across the street, much in the same way they go through a screen in the videogame, but sacrificing the 3D element present in all the Super Mario games since Nintendo 64, and ending up with a left-to-right view. This is because of the difference between a 3D videogame and 2D.
The same happens in painting, or other movies, which have tried to represent macro spaces where multiple actions happen at the same time, like what happens in a town or a building, simultaneously, at the same time. This seems to be impossible to be done in 2D, since it forces painters or movie directors to use frontal shots, and squeezing all the characters into these frontal and flat shots. Some other examples of this phenomenon are A Burial at Ornains by Courbet, Tout Va Bien by Jean Luc Godard, and finally the solution to the problem, which was realized in Dogville by Lars Von Trier. There they could do 3/4 shots and planes, and depict everything simultaneously, by deleting buildings and places and stripping it all down to a stage.
