I had come across a post where someone was asked what their top five Vision of Escaflowne songs were, and so I want to share mine!
I'm not really good at writing summaries for each song, but anyway...I hope you like the music!
First Vision
youtube
It originally plays as the opening sequence for the movie (personally one of my favorite parts) AND IT SLAPS!! Going from the feeling of flying to slaughtering all your enemies on board an airship to get back what's yours. Epic.
No Need for Promises
youtube
The opening sequence for the anime. It is sung by my favorite Japanese songstress, Maaya Sakamoto, and is probably one of the first Escaflowne songs I've heard. Here's the full version.
Sora
youtube
An insert song from the movie. It sounds so pretty! I use it as my alarm to tell me to go to bed.
Yubiwa
youtube
Another song for the movie, and sung by Maaya Sakamoto. It's also one of my first Escaflowne songs.
Dance of Curse
youtube
An insert song in the anime (and a different version in the movie) that is used when the Escaflowne goes to battle. I really like the fervent sound of the violins in the beginning.
(Bonus songs under the cut)
Bonus 2: Bird Song
I realized I couldn't leave out two other songs that I adore, so they're bonus songs.
Memory of Fanelia
youtube
An orechestral rendition of 'Aoi Hitomi', this song is also pretty!
youtube
If you think you've heard this song before, you have (it's also in the 'First Vision song). This makes you feel like you're flying, right? I sometimes use it as the alarm to wake me up.

Van Fanel takes to the skies with his love Hitomi Kanzaki in my Picmix inspired by the movie version of Escaflowne. The movie is very different from the series, with a simpler story and a more Asian influenced aesthetic as well as more of an emphasis on violent action scenes. I like the series and the movie, both have their merits. My Picmix uses official promotional art from Escaflowne: A Girl in Gaea along with my digital edits.

We're hosting a group watch of Escaflowne in the Accord community discord in ~2 hours; all are welcome to join! If you haven't heard of the discord yet, it's a place where me and the other devs hang out, talk about mecha in general, etc. Escaflowne is a fantasy mecha classic, and the movie is a retelling of the series that does not require prior knowledge to watch, so grab your popcorn and beverage of choice, hop in the discord and come join us!

Helloooo! Question time again!
In the movie, the white dragon people are known for special blood controlling the wind and the fire and having the wings. Especially the royal family.
About the wings, I understand, that is an acient sign in the white dragon race (also Van's father...?), in the TV version is only from Varie.
Are there a symbolism between White dragon/wings (inspired by japanese folklore?)? And the dragon Fossil in the movie...? I'd like to know more about White dragon people.
Hi! Recently I've translated a lot of movie materials, but surprisingly, there wasn't much wing lore. Plus, they are not 100% consistent. For example, movie novel provides some explanations but is not a carbon copy of the movie script and several things are different there, including some of the terminology. Therefore, it is up to you whether you accept its explanations.
The abilities Van, Dilandau, and Folken display in the movie (I assume this is what you mean by controlling the wind and fire) are called "sorcerous powers" in the novel. They are not exactly connected to (white) dragon clan or to the wings, it's just said some people are naturally born with them on Gaea. But yes, they are much stronger in the dragon clan. Dilandau's "personal guard" Chesta is also someone with that "sorcerous power", but his is of a different kind (telepathy and observing a distant scene with his "mind eye"). But sure, the creation of wind and fire definitely seem to be dragon clan related abilities.
About the origins of the dragon clan, this time, the movie audio dramas provide some explanations but they are rather vague. Basically, the clans are "followers" of the White and Black Dragon Gods, which are implied to be the fossilized dragons you see. Escaflowne and Alseides are also tied to the two dragon gods but it's all just mentioned in passing and not too specific. If you are new to it, one thing you can NOT count on is Escaflowne lore providing some clear, unambiguous explanation, sorry. The meaning of the wings is even less clear from either so I will not get into speculation here. Please wait for the translations to be published (they eventually will be) and we can discuss opinions then.
Regarding Japanese folklore , you can research tennin/tenshi (basically, a Japanese buddhist version of an angel) or tengu (winged legendary creatures) as winged humanoids in Japanese folklore. But I guess the closest match would be the O-Watatsumi or Ryuujin (in some sources they are the same) which is basically a dragon deity that can take human form. O-Watatsumi rules over waters and Ryuujin is said to rule over the wind and storm (and medicine). Through his daughter who married a human, Ryuujin became the ancestor of the imperial line in Japan. If you read about the legends, several things will sound familiar or reminiscent of the Esca lore in general. The dragon god with land creating abilities, the divine/dragon ancestry of the ruler, the woman of the divine/dragon blood falling for a human, there are magical/powerful jewels present (like the pendant, the energist), you note connections to Jeture and Escaflowne (the god) from the series, etc. Ryuujin is even alternatively named Ryuu-ou, yes, Dragon King (or King Dragon). And there's more dragon gods than just him! It makes me wish there was a book just about the legends centered around this dragon myth. If I can get my hands on some book that I can use I may put together a more exhaustive list of similarities/references.
I don't think the human form of Ryuujin is traditionally depicted with wings though, but I'm not an expert. Dragons with feathery wings I think you only get in the legendary creatures that are composites between dragon and other animals, such as Chinese Pixiu or Ying Lung, and Japanese Hai-Riyo. I feel like this connection between dragon and person having angel-like wings could be just Escaflowne lore where the movie draws from the series itself (and where the series draws from was not the question).
So, I guess that's it from me. Maybe there's some tidbits in the movie artbook as well but tbh I didn't check, I have my hands full with the translations I still need to finish ^^;

I got weirdly defensive about my editing abilities in 2019 so decided to make something specifically to show that I could, in fact, make a really good edit. /shrug
Started: october 2019 during AWA PRO 2019 Finished: 12 August 2020 Spent countless hours on it during that time. Started keeping actual track of hours in Jan 2020. So total project time below is heavily UNDERstated.
Time spent: 94hr 3min 10s total. (again- understated. I normally just round up to 100 lol) 72hrs 38min 10sec for Premiere CS6. 18hr 42min for after effects CS6. 2hr 43min VLC (looping betas lmao).
Finalist in AWA PRO 2020: Best artistic, best video. No Awards won.
Many thanks to all my beta testers, for the editors on discord who actually tried to explain what flow was in esoteric ways so I could maybe understand it, and their help with footage procurement (searching for certain scene compositions in anime I didn’t know). Special shoutouts to TheLazyDaze for continuous hype and feedback, SeasonsAMV who showed me The Perfect Insider, which finished a big blank spot I was struggling with, and Niotex and Dr. Derpface who convinced me to just make my own butterflies in After Effects (Previously I had tried to mask them out of a Demon Slayer scene. It was awful).
Breakdown of the baby scene: (released 26 dec 2020)
youtube
My PC nearly died while I tried to make this, and it didn’t even render correctly in the end. I’m sorry for the glitchiness, but due to the difficulty this is likely the only thing like this I will do for Esoterra. [The gold mandala & meat pieces scenes show up later than they should, making accurate comparison pretty difficult. The other overlays seem mostly in sync. I apologize.] This is all the overlays involved for just the one part of the baby scene. The baby scene is not even the most complicated scene in the full AMV, but it is the one that is most obviously different and the one that seems to get most the positive remarks. Hope this is interesting to someone.
Breakdown of the whole thing: (released 6 Jan 2021)
youtube
Finally a breakdown that I’m semi-okay with. It’s not as detailed as I wanted, but I think it gets enough of the message across. It’s still a bit buggy in some areas (2 different video files stitched together to get all the video tracks on screen) but it’s in sync. This timeline is actually pretty organized. Any video that’s on it is actively being used in conjunction with an opacity/layer blending mode, masks, or keying. (But 80% of the time it’s a blending mode). Any nested sequences that seem to have the same clips repeated continually are due to the same reasons. On this timeline, Green is nested, Pink is an AE project. I didn’t do pop-ups for every nested sequence or AE project because most of them weren’t anything complicated. The others were either complicated or I just wanted to show off for whatever reason. Especially the butterfly segment. I hand-made and animated the butterfly swarm. All frames are shown on the tracks for informational purposes; I don’t edit like that. Anyway, this was submitted and made finals in AWA PRO 2020, but didn’t win anything (My other video, “Dysphoria,” did win best tech in the same contest though). Esoterra was the most complicated and tech-heavy video I’ve made. Also clocking in at the longest time I’ve ever spent on a project, nearly 100 hours. Feel free to ask any questions!

Happy Escaflowne movie day!
Tumblr media
Just kidding, I made that up. But today is March 18th, the date on Hitomi's watch at the beginning of the movie. (The SA is not short for Saturday, as my naive self initially assumed, but the abbreviation for san-gatsu, or March.)
Tumblr media
To celebrate, I wanted to write out a couple thoughts I've had recently.
Tumblr media
What is this weird flash of a scene when Yukari tells Hitomi to tell Van who she is? Since all of the other visions Hitomi saw are in a similar color scale, this one likely was a vision, too, though when and why she had it, I can't say. Maybe it's *just* a flashback, but either way, for some reason, Yukari is Hitomi's voice of reason here, but Hitomi is too frozen by shock to actually act.
If anyone else has any thoughts on this, I'd like to know.
Tumblr media
By the end of the movie, Hitomi does in fact find the strength to overcome her shock and act to protect Van, throwing herself in front of him when Folken threw his power.
But why is there a random pillar of light that doesn't transport anyone anywhere, as we would expect it to do thanks to the series?
Tumblr media
This tripped me up for the longest time. Now I think that--like Dilandau, Folken, and Van have a visible manifestation of their power--this is Hitomi's power as the Wing Goddess manifesting as a pillar of light.
Why is it a pillar of light? Probably to pay tribute to the series.
We see her afterwards, weakened by such a surprising, explosive burst of energy.
Tumblr media
So yeah, there's zero doubt in my mind that Hitomi is the Wing Goddess (Tsubasa no Kami), and there she went and used her power to protect Van, which power manifested in a pillar of light as an ode to the series.
Personally, I think that her overcoming her crippling indecision to act on Van's behalf is probably one of the most romantic things ever.
Also, let's admire Van's tattoos for a moment.

Escaflowne (movie) 100 x 100 icons! Found on Across the Universe v 3.0, an icon community by DeadStarz or Jacqui. The site has more icons for video games, other anime, Japanese bands, movies, and TV shows.
I love the distinctly 2000s web feel of these designs. I used to hang out in LJ and there were a ton of active icon makers on there too.
More icons from this site under the cut!

And finally a cute lil 50 x 50:

Also I have to stack these icons in this order so that they don't get squished/zoomed in. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I was browsing some Escaflowne screenshots for use in my Picmix collages when this thought hit me - Is movie universe Dilandau actually the child of Sora and Folken??? Sora and Folken seem almost like a couple stuck in an unhappy marriage in the movie, and Folken does mention that Dilandau is a mixed-race person from the Dragon Clan.... Maybe Folken forced Sora to have a child with him so he would have a living weapon to use? The whole “I found you living with wild dogs” thing may have been emotional abuse by Folken to keep Dilandau in his place. Sora’s also the only person with silver hair in the movie Gaea. Sora seems ageless and movie Folken seems old enough to have a teenaged son too. This would make quite an exciting fanfiction!
I completely prefer the TV series Escaflowne to the movie version in terms of storytelling and characters, but I like the movie’s beautiful animation and sense of aesthetics. Movie Dilandau is a cool character but not nearly as interesting as “Dark Lady Oscar”!
