#even if it's Mulan coded

Being the eldest son and being the eldest daughter has many similarities but the bigest difference is when someone tells us to 'fulfill your duty'
When they tell that my brother, they mean that he shall bring glory, honor and money to my father's house, he should make him proud, he stould strive to be the best
When they tell me that, they mean I should be a mother. I should clean after my brothers, find a good man, marry him and bear him healthy children.
I can be pretty, I can be smart, I can strong, I can be all of these things, but at the end of the day it won't matter.
Because he is expected to be exceptional
And I to take care of the house

Look I know Rapunzel paints and Tiana cooks, but if you guys don't think Mulan is the Most Creative Disney Princess, you're wrong.
She's literally introduced in this perfect scene that highlights her whole character, flaws and strengths:
Tumblr media
The first time you see her she's:
Cheating, which is totally the opposite of what honor-code General Shang would do.
Undisciplined, which is what going to the army fixes.
Problem-solving—by writing the recitation she can't remember on her wrist—
BUT LISTEN. That last one is the first hint you have that she's the Most Creative Disney Princess. Because guess what? She's not the first young woman to cheat at the matchmaker test. The Matchmaker specifically checks to see if she's cheating when the test begins. But the rest of them wrote their cheat sheet on their fans.
Tumblr media
The Matchmaker was prepared for the usual kind of tricks. But Mulan's full of her own ideas, not everyone else's.
You guys know the rest. She dresses up like a soldier—nobody suspects her because the idea that someone would do that never occurs to everyone else. She climbs the pole by tying the medallions around each other when none of the other recruits can figure it out. She lights the cannon by grabbing Mushu instead of searching for flints. She creates an avalanche instead of just taking Shan Yu out. She tricks the Huns by dressing her friends up as concubines. She defeats Shan Yu with his own sword and a bunch of fireworks.
But even beyond problem-solving, Mulan never does things like other people do. She doesn't even do things like other women do.
Tumblr media
She doesn't just walk across a bridge, she jumps from pillar to pillar. She doesn't just bring her father tea, she puts a spare teacup in her sleeve because she knows she's clumsy.
Mulan is creative. But you know what that moment proves? That she's not just a representation of all women-versus-men. Mulan is representative of a human, who sees where she has strengths, and sees where she has weaknesses. She uses her strengths to her advantage and works to improve or make up for her weaknesses. She doesn't try to be exactly like a man. She just tries to use what she's got to do the right thing. And finding ways to use what you've got, even if it's not like what everyone else has, is creativity.

Here, dear @bryverros just make me think too much about this lmao
So... Is Zuko Disney Princess coded? Let's see.
He's canonically part of a royal family, so the title is there, no marriage needed.
He has superpowers (firebending) and a particular ability his really good at (swordfighting), you know like Elsa with ice and Mérida with archery.
Another thing he has in common with Mérida is the fact he doesn't agree with his father about stuff and he doesn't know how to shut up about it (:
He got the evil parent AND the evil sister (at least Cinderella was adopted)
He talks to animals (yk the frog thing), animals trust him too (Appa), and he got a magical pet (Ruk).
He had an incredible glow up.
Let's say that Iroh is his fairy godmother, gives him good advice, helps him prepare for his dates and always reminds him that he is a prince even at his lowest.
He is fighting for his honor (I mean, if you told the guy he would get back his honor going to the matchmaker, he would've been first in line, doing way better than Mulan with the tea thing)
He would cry looking at his reflection while this verse sounds in the background "If I wear a mask, I can fool the world, but I cannot fool my heart".
Being Lee for a month show him that he was meant to fulfil his role as a part of the royal family (customer service/domestic work does that to people)
He got a love interest that fell for him with zero knowledge about who he was: his title or his past or real identity, so if you want to eat up the classic Disney princess romance. There you go.
He goes through the tantrums, emotional rollercoasters and "the world hates me" moments like a pro.
The change of heart moment happens to him as it happens to most disney princess, and it defines his destiny. So point checked.
He went into a life changing adventure with the first cute and friendly guy that stood in front of him (I'm not even explaining more about this).
He gets the throne at the end of the show (in this point we only got Elsa, and I'm sure Zuko also considered moving to the forest after being Fire Lord for a year, but his sister wasn't as reliable as Anna).
His canon love interest is a childhood love that ended up saving his life and that's so princess coded that there's no need to give an example, it just makes sense.
I think there are things I'm not addressing, but for now this is enough to conclude that... yeah, he is sooo princess coded.

HOW’D I DO? — I. MIDORIYA
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
➠ izuku midoriya x blk!reader
➠ mulan’s input; deku learns the tootsie roll
➠ c/w: black-coded reader, pet names [princess & baby], typical lowkey toxic family, deku got some seasoning in him
Tumblr media
➠ TWO MONTHS AGO you begged midoriya to finally come with you to one of the many family reunions that were being hosted this year. he wasn’t worried about meeting your parents since he already sobbed for their blessing to date you, so seeing them again wasn’t on his mind too much
➠ HOWEVER, meeting the rest of your family was anxiety-inducing especially how you told stories of how judgement they were when it came to whoever you was dating. you gave him a heads up on the secret test that they’ll put him through to see if he was worthy of being you.
“zuku, don’t worry too much about the reunion, okay? if you’re not feeling up to it then i understand baby” you gave him a smile, but he could sense the disappointment behind it, which made his heart ache. when it came to disappointing you, it dug swords into his chest because you deserve the world and more and knowing he couldn’t simply do a single task for you. you were his princess, his baby and disappointment was one thing he never ever want you to feel towards him. so he conjured up a plan to make sure he made an everlasting impression on your relatives
➠ THE MONTHS LEADING up to the reunion, you noticed his constant absence. at first, you passed it off as him being drowned in his hero work and didn’t think much of it until you noticed these disappearances were also happening on his days off or days the both of you would plan something. you would ask him what happened those days and he’ll give you a sweaty panicked answers like ‘so and so said they needed a bit help at their agency’ or ‘all might needs me for so studying for one for all’ and then he’ll check his phone and rush out the shared apartment.
➠ YOUR SUSPICIONS became worse when you found curly pink stands of hair stuck on a shirt or sock of his. the thought of your deku possibly creeping around made your chest tighten and insecure. you started leaving him on delivered or read and also rushed out the house just like him so he could feel how you were feeling until he finally stopped you and actually sat and talked you. “the thought of being unfaithful to you will never cross my mind and the fact my favorite girl is feeling that way is killing me” he confessed making you feel secure about y’all relationship
➠ THE DAY FINALLY CAME and damn deku wished it didn’t appear so suddenly. you peeped his nervousness and the noticeable twitches, you placed hand on his freckles cheek caressing it with your thumb while giving a gentle smile, reassuring him that your family is going to love just as much as you do. his nerves simmered down just enough for him to remember what his goal was today with your family
➠ SO FAR things was going smoothly. deku met everyone and of course they appreciated his polite mannerisms as well how he treats you but they were still wary of him. your mom even made sure to let him know he got your grandparents approval, which he was so gracious for but his work was still not done
➠ EVERYTHING WAS GOING UNTIL you heard one of your aunts yelled ‘EVERYBODY TO THE DANCE FLOOR’ your heart dropped. you loved deku to death but your love could never blind you from the fact your boyfriend couldn’t dance to save his life and you knew this happy moment was going to come to end
➠AS EVERYONE DANCE you couldn’t help but noticed your cousins urging deku to come join the rest of the them as the previous song shifted to the tootsie roll song. you watched as your anxious boyfriend awkwardly made his way to center of the circle that formed and stood and watched everyone around him tell him to bust a move. he locked eyes and you quickly turned your back and gnawed on your bottom lip worriedly, not wanting to watch the train wreck that was going to happen
➠ BUT TO YOUR SURPRISE you didn’t hear words of confusion or disapproval, but of encouragement. you turned around and seen deku effortlessly and rhythmically going along to the beat. your face was blanked as you watched as your cousins and uncles all excitedly join him in the center and hype him up even more before he started getting overwhelmed by the attention
➠ AND ALMOST IN A INSTANT you were in his scarred arms littering his face with loving kisses and praises to match. “i hope y’all getting started on my grand babies” you heard your mom uttered causing an uproar of laughter from your relatives as well a blushing deku

I didn't even watch "WISH" yet because in my country it will only be available at january, but people are saying it's a bad cliche so I probably won't watch at the cinema.
The thing is, even though I am a hopeless romantic, not everything has to have romance. There are princess who are perfectly fine without a prince, like Mirabel, Elsa, Merida, Moana and Raya(I do kinda like the idea of Raya with a girl, just not Namaari). But we were so robbed of seeing Asha and the star boy(he is literally a staR so I don't doubt Disney would call him StaN or something like that, so his name is Stan from now on, I am gonna call him like that, is easier than star boy). Asha and Stan had the potential to be the next Tianaveen and Rapunzel&Eugene (I don't know their ship name). The concept arts are the cutest thing I have ever seen. Also "At All Costs" (bop) would have been a love song between the two!!! Them singing it man. The pain I will feel when I don't see them passionately sing it, very "I see the light" coded, in the actual movie. Somehow, now is not feminist for a strong female character to have a male partner by her side. Like...This doesn't make sense! You can be a strong female character and have a man at the same time! Have y'all forgotten Mulan and Shang? Anna and Kristoff? Ariel and Eric? Jasmine and Aladdin? (There are more examples and I could go on all day, but you got what I meant already) I hate Disney for throwing good ideas at the trash and playing safe just for money(like Hobie Brown/Spider-Punk said "it's a metaphor for capitalism"). And as the guy looked blonde with blue/green eyes in the arts I have seen, and Asha is a black latina, they lost the opportunity of having a biracial couple ACTUALLY DONE RIGHT (Pocahontas and John Smith don't count, he is a collonizer with the most common name in the world, she deserves so much better). Like, if the thing is show how inclusive you are by having a black latina female protagonist for little girls to see and feel represented in a good way, you could have increased that feeling by making someone fall in love for her. Little girls would feel like they are beautiful and desired/desireable in a positive way and that they worthy of being loved and love and be with whoever they want to be with, even someone who has a different skin color.
I am also mad because we could have seen Disney's first evil villain COUPLE with King Magnifico and his wife, the queen(still don't know her name, sorry). Can't you guys imagine the HITS, THE FIRST PLACE OF BILLBOARD HOT 100 WORTHY songs, they would proportionate us? Even if only one song, it would be enough for me. But someone thought having a female villain would be anti-feminist and they discarded an original and authentic idea, which is what Disney built its empire on the first place. Come on Disney minorities don't want to be portrayed as those unrealistic superior beings, they want to be portrayed as real human beings with emotions, struggles, qualities and flaws. Having an iconic female villain like you guys always had(like Maleficent, Cruella De Vil, Ursula, Mother Gothel, Lady Tremaine, etc) and set her up with an iconic male villain(like Gaston, Doctor Facilier, Shan Yu, Jafar, Hans, etc) it would have been top notch, god tier. King Magnifico and the queen could have been like the Gomez and Morticia of evil. You could address so many topics by it. Like the kingdom being ruled by evil would have been a great social critic of some politicians out there, for example. And we could have had an iconic final boss battle between Asha and Stan VS Magnifico and the queen.
Anyway, what I mean by this is that if someone has fanarts or just ANY CONTENT, of Asha and Stan, tag me, reblog this or comment, I don't care, just warn me, because they are my new obsession. I will also write a fanfic about this movie with these ideas, but only after I have watched the movie so until them, please feed my hyperfixation in Stasha (Star boy/Stan×Asha), I'm begging y'all

Round 1B: The Lion King 1 1/2 (2004) vs. Mulan (1998)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda:
The Lion King 1 1/2:
“This movie is about Timon and Pumbaa raising a child together”
“Just 2 dudes raising their son and dealing with commitment issues. The movie heavily leans into the bit that Timon and Pumba are like a couple. Timon is voiced by gay icon Nathan Lane. This movie was my childhood.”
Other propaganda for the original movie with the same idea:
“Simba was literally raised by a gay couple (Timon and Pumba…Timon even literally wears drag in the movie)”
“Timon and Puumba are a queer couple that raised simba into adulthood. Scar is a mean gay. Nuff said”
“Timone and Pumbaa are Simba's gay adoptive dads.”
Mulan:
“Trans awakening for so many of us”
“Well Mulan gives off very non-binary vibes”
“Literally listen to the music also Li Shang”
“just what your intro post said - Milan being trans (or gnc) coded and Li Shang being bi coded. like come on do i even need to explain? I’ll just add that I was listening to “Reflection” on repeat cuz the lines “Who is that girl I see staring straight back at me?…When will my reflection show who I am inside?” we’re stuck in my head. So with that song on loop I decided to finally chop my hair short in true Milan fashion (ok that’s a lie, I didn’t do it myself, but the PRINCIPLE) so not only is Milan trans/gnc coded but I can’t be the only one the movie inspired to finally go for The Haircut or something else related. sry that’s very rambly”
“gnc. bisexual. what more could u want.”
“Both trans and gay coded. Shang was so into Ping that he couldn’t stand to execute him for his “crime”. Also includes drag saving the day!”
“This is less a competition for the queerest movie and more a competition for the second queerest movie. Just *look* at every aspect of Mulan and tell me it’s even a contest.”
“Not only is mulan super trans coded but Shang is definitly bi”
“I know it's the obvious pick, but Mulan is so gender and Shang is so bi. 💯💯💯”
“Mulan is very trans coded. Li Shang is totally bi. Dude absolutely had a thing for “Ping” before learning he was actually a woman (Mulan). Also watching that movie as a young egg made me feel less alone about the fact that I didn’t fit into the “girl” role everyone around me pushed me into. Mulan was kind of my hero and sometimes listening to Reflection makes me tear up a little bit because it’s such a mood but also such a TRANS mood. It’s probably my favorite Disney movie song. “Why is my reflection someone I don’t know” made me THINK as a kid. Disney may be evil but they did the world a great service with Mulan.”
“It is obvious why”
“If movies could turn you trans this one did it to me”
“I mean I assume this one is going to be there, but what if we all think “oh everyone is going to put mulan so I won’t” and then nobody does?”
“it’s mulan”
“Gender”
“Mulan is so trans, however you want to read her (as a trans man, genderqueer, genderfluid, etc.) and Shang is hella bi. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk”
“This movie is SOOOOO trans coded. Captain Li is a bisexual icon. As an Asian queer person I have sat and cried to Reflection by Lea Salonga while staring in a mirror too many times to count. Can I be my authentic self without making my parents who I love hate me? It's too good.”
“My little asian tboy awakening”
“Can be read as transmasc- he finds his true purpose/calling in life by presenting as male- or as transfem- she goes against everyone’s expectations for her by revealing her true self as a woman. A very trans movie. Also just a very good movie in general.”

Mixing Magic and Science to Shape Dragon Breath
Tumblr media
I'd be lying if I said dragons weren't my favorite magical creatures. There are literally two of them on my desk right now, and I have handed more people the Temeraire books than I care to count. That said, the vast majority of my dragon experience is with what I'm gonna call white westerner dragons. If they're not literally fantasy British, they're inspired by fantasy British dragons, and the dragon world is just a lot bigger than that. So I was absolutely delighted to find a book with a Nampeshiwe and broaden my dragon horizons. Let's talk To Shape A Dragon's Breath.
When Kasaqua chooses Anequs to be Nampeshiweisit, it is largely a matter of safety that first convinces Aneques to leave Masquapaug to learn the skiltakraft to effectively Shape Kasaqua's breath. However, this is an Indigenous woman walking into the heart of Fantasy North America with flavors of Fantasy Nordic Countries, so... colonialism, white supremacy, racism, and imperialism are massive themes and major roadblocks that Anequs experiences. And experiences again. And again. And again. From literally everyone, from her friends, to uneasy allies, to indifferent classmates to bitter enemies. The nuance and variation in the racism that Anequs goes head to head with was stunning--as in it left me absolutely stunned.
On top of that, the world is developed to the point that Frau Kuiper keeps laying out multifaceted, multi-party political issues and Anequs just keeps having to go "literally all of these perspectives share the assumption that my people are uncivilized and need either exterminating or civilizing. What if we tried assuming we are people just as civilized as you with a culture culture traditions just as deeply held?" It's amazing how many characters tell Anequs that she is rude for suggesting that she is a person. Like the number of people I wanted to punch while reading was astounding.
That said, no character in this book is a simple allegory or one-dimensional caricature. Theod Knecht was separated from his family and his people at birth and raised to believe that the other way to be a person was to be Anglish--and even then, he could never be Anglish enough to be fully human. His arc is the complicated emotions of unlearning a system that says you have no worth and reconnecting with your people.
Sander is Anglish and coded as Autistic, but he and Anequs have one of my favorite friendships in this book. They take each other day by day on their own terms and at their own paces, and honestly Sander is just a sweetheart.
Liberty is in an interesting position because she is indentured and living in an Anglish society, which prohibits same-sex relationships. Which does not stop Anequs from expressing her feelings for Liberty in ways that are safe and supportive of Liberty. These two are darling and I genuinely cannot wait to see where they go in the sequel.
Then we come to Kasaqua. Kasaqua is just literally playfulness and joy in dragon form, and she is a delight. She isnt as talkative as say Naomi Novik or Rebecca Yarros's dragons are, but she is expressive and personality-filled nonetheless. There is also her deep-seated joy at [redacted because that's kind of a major spoiler and I don't want to spoil this book].
All these relationships really form and solidify at Kuiper's Academy of Natural Philosophy and Skiltakraft, to which Anequs receives a full sholarship. The school is like a mix of senior high school and undergrad at university, since students between 16 and 20 attend. Most of the students are male, with Anequs and Marta the only female students in attendance for this book. The school is run by Frau Kuiper, who, in her day, basically pulled a Mulan/Alanna of Trebond to get chosen by a dragon, trained, and then sent to the front of a war where she distinguished herself. Her "pet project" to to use Anequs and Theod to "prove that nackies can be civilized" which is honestly pretty gross and causes a metric ton of friction between her and Anequs. In the process though, Anequs learns lessons that it is debatable whether Frau Kuiper meant to teach her that I think will let her be heard in Anglish society enough to support and preserve her people.
Overall, this book was amazing. It was HEAVY, but it needed to be, and that weight just adds to the reading experience. This is one of those books that just literally everyone should have to read at some point.

Tell me what are my words worth ; Benedict Bridgerton x Reader
Tumblr media
Chapter 12: "Parlant à la lune"
Pairing: Benedict Bridgerton x fem!reader
Summary: It has been two years since your secret was exposed and you had to leave London. Two years with deep buried misery and in which you missed everything you used to have. However, neglect, novelties, and letters made sure to give you more than one reason to return to claim someone who is as rightfully yours as your estate and your people: Benedict Bridgerton.
Warnings/tags: idiots in love, eventual smut, mutual pining, (kinda???) enemies (fake, this is just pride) to lovers (surely), bisexual benedict bridgerton, feminist themes, historical inaccuracy (for the sake of the plot), inspired by mulan (1998), song: the lakes (taylor swift), other tags to be added
Chapter summary: Perhaps you had manifested it or not, but either way, there was another man in your life to make it unbearable. Luckily, the stubborn fate (a letter) and your untamed mind (your undying love for a certain someone) would not let you stagnant in that misery.
Word count: 2K
❁ Series masterlist
❁ mila's paracosm (main masterlist)
Tumblr media
1816 seemed to be a vintage year for the vineyards of the Château du Clos de Vougeot, so much so that it had you between the bushes of grapes painting them while tasting the fine wine produced almost two decades ago. Despite not being able to drink it until you were five and ten, the sweet, burgundy-colored drink has accompanied you throughout your life.
It reminded you of your childhood running through these same vineyards, riding a white horse named after your Mother's favorite gemstone as you tried to win a race against the setting sun, laughing with your father, and shooting arrows at the red dots placed on the trunks of trees. It made you wish he had never left, though you had made peace with his absence so long ago.
Perhaps you would not have to have done all the things you once did.
Your short stay in London did certainly mark you like a bloodstain: the ghost of those ocean eyes haunted your dreams and nightmares, and the words printed on ridiculous papers chased you down Europe for many moons. However, you have come way too far to watch some name-dropping sleaze as Lady Whistledown.
For a moment, you watched your bridges burn to the ground and your castles crumble down. What once were chants celebrating your name turned to screams of hate. You went from looks of adoration to them looking at you like you were a monster.
You had lived in the Americas with your Grandfather for two pair of months as a punishment for your imprudences and had returned to Burgundy with the determination to claim what is yours whatever it took.
You were not as successful, but you managed to have your cousin living constantly at the expense of your hard work ever since. At least he did not intend to marry you anymore, and for that, you could settle.
The book you had written was published earlier this year, and the story of the author writing poems to an unknown lover, sending them to him by talking to the moon was certainly a hit. As a woman, you found that so far from possible, but having your status and wealth did it all to make sure your words could be read anywhere across Europe.
Many more nights than you are willing to admit, you wondered whether Benedict was aware of the existence of the book or not; but most importantly, if he had realized it was about him.
Everything, for two years, was about him.
Portraits of his face adorned the walls of the Palace of Versailles, and his name was a recurring code in your book. There was even an unfortunate error in some of the first copies, as his name and surname had accidentally ended up explicitly mentioned.
No one suspected that the aforementioned was a real person, and you were grateful to the Heavens for that.
"Excusez-moi, Lady Y/N. Quelqu’un vous attend." Antoinette announced, and you nodded.
[Excuse me, Lady Y/N. Someone is expecting you]
You took a handkerchief to clean your paint-splattered hands and made your way to the Palace and out of the field.
Once you were inside, you were told that the person was waiting in the sitting room with your Grandfather. The person was a man, and you almost dropped your handkerchief to the floor.
"My dear," your Grandfather called for you. "There is someone you should meet."
"Whoever this is, I want him gone by dinnertime," you said.
He rolled his eyes at your stubbornness. "He has traveled for days and days."
"It is impossible for a human to care less about another."
You would not normally behave in such a manner, but the resemblance that man shared with your father had your imagination running in circles.
"Do you even know this man?"
A scoff left your lips. "He looks exactly like my father, meaning he must be a bastard child of his. Why is he here? To get what should be his. What will he get? Not a thing. I said I wanted him gone by dinnertime."
You regretted having created your Antoine alter ego. It was almost as if you had manifested a brother, which was devastatingly pathetic.
It was obvious he was standing there ready to take it all away from you.
The story behind it all is that your Grandfather has been looking for ways to watch your reign end for a while now, and the possibility of him having a bastard child was there. He couldn't have lived in celibacy for the nine and ten years he lived without his wife.
He didn't indeed.
There were three children of his living the life of commoners, but the only one who was interested in living the life that could have been his had he been born from your Mother was him.
"Don't listen to her, Raphaël," your grandfather told him, then looked at you. "You mustn't manage all of this for another day. You might not accept him as a brother, but after all, he is your father's son. What you consider to be yours isn't anymore, you must stop acting as if you were Queen Charlotte, owner of every soul that stands in the same region as you, you are not."
Your Grandfather used to adore you, but the events of two years ago led him to treat you like a ragdoll possessed by the cruel spirit of a soul in Purgatory. One you wish to get rid of but return every time you believe it to be gone forever.
You only laughed at his indiscretions toward you and watched him tolerate your devoted gestures.
Suddenly, you were nothing but a woman with the heaviest of heads that bears the crown, and you eventually got tired of trying to win his love back.
"He is nobody," you repeated. "This is my home, and so is every palace under the name of the Dukes of Burgundy. My pennies have made everyone's crowns and if I say I wanted him gone, gone he will be."
"You forget your place quite often, do you not?" your supposed brother commented. "I have never seen a woman that believes herself to be the owner of it all."
Your outraged glance could have killed him if what they said about looks were true.
"You will not come to my own home to talk to me as if you were someone with the right to. You should be the one to remember his place-"
"Women are incredibly arrogant and insane these days, it is ironic coming from one who is utterly alone in this world."
"Watch your mouth, brother," you threatened him. "You will choose your next words carefully unless you want to see what happens when you poke a bear."
"Leave us alone." your grandfather ordered him, and he complied right away.
You sighed.
"When will this princess figure out she isn't worth saving, huh?"
"Whatever do you mean?"
"I am sick of your misbehaving, Y/N, in all seriousness," he snapped finally. "Your arrogance is making me go insane, your words are inopportune, when will you learn that nobody in this world is standing by you?"
"And I am sick of you coming to my life every time I'm getting it right, sir. I am just so tired of you treating me like an unwanted child," you replied. "You treat me as if I wasn't your own daughter's daughter, and I am certain that she would be disappointed in you if she were here! She would understand me!"
"Don't you raise your voice at me and don't you dare speak of your mother as if you had known her." he ordered, his voice tranquil but angry.
Hurting tears escaped your sore eyes. "I lost the love of my life, you know? I lost him and I must live with that for the rest of my life! I have nobody! My Father is gone, my Mother is gone, you are gone! I am, just like you said, without a soul standing by me, and, just like he said, utterly alone in this world! If he comes I will end up living in the streets after having had it all. Is it what you want? For your granddaughter to be left to her own devices?"
"Ever since you escaped your home to disguise as a man and had that Bridgerton boy dishonor you, you stopped being my granddaughter."
You nodded, feeling more devastated than you had before.
"Alright, I am leaving for Versailles. He can have whatever he wants," you answered, knowing very well that no matter how much he tried, he would never get his name on anything you owned. Your Father's will firmly stated that the one to inherit every ducal thing would be your first son, said will was blessed by the King of France, and there was not a thing absolutely anyone could do against the King's blessing. "You can be sure you will never see me again."
"Do you have anyone to stay with in Versailles?"
"I do not need anyone, I have my Palace."
"I'm afraid you don't."
"What do you-"
Antoinette's sudden arrival stopped you from continuing. "Désolée, mais vous avez une correspondance de Londres."
[I am sorry, but you have correspondance from London]
You frowned, receiving the envelope.
From Eloise Bridgerton
So you opened it right away.
Dearest Y/N,
I, and dare I say my entire family also, wishes you more than well.
I do not know how proper it is for me to write to you after all that happened with my brother, but there is something you must know: he is about to make the biggest mistake of his life, and you are the only one who can stop it.
Benedict met someone: Miss Hayley Prince. I am obliged to speak of her as such a nice lady, with manners like no other. But she is not you.
This is funny enough because ever since you left, every woman he has had around shares some sort of similarity with you. This is what I have picked from overhearing conversations between Anthony, Daphne, Simon, Colin, and Kate, since, of course, I could never know a thing about those affairs of his.
Benedict has stopped himself from sending letters or traveling to France many more times than you can imagine, so you should know that losing you has been the catastrophe of his life. He regrets letting you go and it is under that premise that I beg for you to come to England as soon as possible.
He is seriously considering proposing to her, but I know that if you were to return, he would leave her and marry you instead.
Benedict does not love her at all, and in her, he just found the woman who is the entire opposite of you: she is most certainly not French, she does not care about art, she says emeralds are not suitable for her, she braids her hair funny, she gets disgusted by the mere idea of fencing or horseback riding, she hates horses, she is mean, she is superficial, she is not the third cousin of the King of France (or any king for that matter), and said she is terrified of traveling overseas. Benedict found the only woman in England that does not remind him of you and decided to hold onto her.
The problem is, Benedict is miserable with her. She is insufferable and none of us can bear with the idea of having to see her often. Also, my brother needs someone who can make him smile and inspire him.
That someone is you.
P.S. He talks to the moon every time it is full. I beg you to come fix him.
P.S.2. I have heard about your book! As soon as I see it somewhere I will buy it.
P.S.3. Lady Danbury said she would be enchanted to receive you at her home.
Sincerely and expecting your answer eagerly,
Eloise Bridgerton

Okay, so, I don’t know how but I’m not seeing a lot of discussion about gender and gender identity when talking about Blue Eyed samurai. Like, the main character, Mizu, is shown to have an AFAB body early on in the show, and the immediate thought is “oh, they probably hide this just due to the historical situation, like mulan. She’s just hiding the truth of her womanhood so she can have more freedom” but then as the show goes on there are scenes and themes that heavily hint to mizu not seeing themselves as just a woman or a man (btw big spoilers for Blue Eyed Samurai here)
Like, in the puppet show that’s used as a framing device throughout episode 5, mizu is represented as both the ronin, a man who swore revenge on an entire clan (mirroring mizu’s own revenge plot), and also the bride, who turns into an onryō at the end of the story, mirroring mizus own journey of revenge after being mistreated.
Plus there’s the brothel scene, this is where me and my sister kind of realized “oh yeah, this bitch queer coded, and also definitely probably trans.” While being showed the different ways people enjoy the brothel, Mizu seems completely uninterested in anything that doesn’t get them further to their goal, except when they see a man having a threesome with a man and a woman, AND while watching this man be intimate with another man in the brothel, mizu immediately thinks of their ‘enemies to lovers’ boyfriend Taigen. This could be another indication of how Mizu doesn’t feel like either, or like both genders or could even be an indication of them being a trans masculine character.
And there’s just so many themes of social acceptance based on how they are born, how people perceive them once they truly know Mizu, and their fear of telling people who they truly are. And I know there’s a lot of media where people out main characters due to cultural taboos (like mizus mixed race identity) that isn’t necessarily about being trans, but at the same time there are soooo many moments where gender plays such an important role for these characters, which makes sense given the context and time period but I can’t help but feel the way Mizu represents themselves is more than just a survival tactic.
Even Ringo continues to use he/him pronouns for Mizu throughout the show despite finding out about Mizus ‘secret’ pretty early on (although this could also just be to not give away their secret). And the only other characters that know about their sex either tries to force them into a woman’s gender role in society (such as their mother and husband) or use it to mock them (like Fowler in the final episode).
I dunno man. Either way though I’m simping fuckin HARD for this character.

Have you ever seen Brother Bear? If so, what do you think of the original movie and its sequel?
I have!
The original movie is fine, I watch it again every now and then, but it was too padded out with filler, because they wanted to make it longer. God forbid they release a movie that's only an hour long anymore. I like that it's a completely original story, given that most of what Disney makes is based on something, and I like that it takes place during paleolithic times. I like the main plotline, and I honestly get a little emotional whenever Sitka transforms back into a human to greet his brothers (and when he runs off with Koda's mom). It is, unfortunately, another example of a Disney POC protagonist who spends the majority of the movie as an animal, though.
As for the sequel, I've only seen it once, and there's only a few things I really remember about it.
Like most Disney sequels, the plot was very very forced.
The women who were preparing Nita for marriage were just rip-offs of the women preparing Mulan for marriage, even down to the color coding and basic shapes (short, round, pink vs tall, thin, blue).

Mulan (ノ´ヮ´)ノ*:・゚✧
I think Once Upon A Time has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to great characters everywhere. I may not be a fan of a lot of the way romances got handled, and I have opinions about the untapped potential left and right, but the characters we got to witness are pretty amazing. That's why even when I didn't care about the larger plot, I always had fun with this show. So many cool characters. But making me pick one who left an impact on me with not much screentime (well, at least I have 12 eps) and had me screaming for more - it's Mulan. Of course she does have the advantage of having one of the best animated Disney Princess movies.
Although that's a funny thing here. Where known fairytales got a little twist here and there, Mulan's backstory isn't really touched upon. She wears her armor, is a well-trained soldier/warrior and now travels a lot. It's like "we know you know the movie, let's get on". The one re-occuring thing we get is this fabulous moment when she takes off her helmet and people go "omg you're a girl" and she gets to correct them "woman". A+ Being viewed as a dude and if not getting underestimated is her thing.
An outstanding moment I love about Mulan? In 2x06 Tallahassee Emma tells her to cut down the beanstalk should she not be back within ten hours and also to do everything to get Snow back home to Storybrooke. It's the classic situation doing something dangerous while the clock is ticking. And usually a hero will be like "five more minutes", everything is very close. But we need moments of real tension to undercut the usual. And Mulan is so perfect for this. Because she will honor this agreement to the letter. She is one to ask to follow difficult orders. Snow actually does tackle her to the ground and yes, Emma arrives a few minutes late, then all is fine. But this is the cornerstone of Mulan as a character - give her a task, she will do it, with everything she has. It could even be something detriment to her own happiness or well-being. A character trait that can be a strength and a flaw at the same time. The range! We could have seen this later on if Mulan had stayed. She could have been a person to side with "the reasonable option" against the group of hope-loving heroes even.
That doesn't mean Mulan is uncaring. We got to witness how she fell in love with Aurora, we know she has a soft side. Sure, she protected Aurora, because she promised Philip to take care of her, but that situation became very personal. And omg that scene when Mulan gives Aurora her heart back... has any heart been placed back with such care? Such a sensual scene!
Tumblr media
It's soul-crushing they kinda did this to Mulan twice. Robbing her of finding love, watching on as somebody under a Sleeping Curse gets True Love's Kiss, never experiencing that magic herself. But apart from that, when she gets her heart crushed (only figuratevily) in 3x03 Quite a Common Fairy and announces she'd join Robin Hood's band - I did hope she would. She could have been an excellent addition. Especially since the Merry Men could have used more to do (just like the dwarves). That would have been such a fun mix and overall a great way to eventually get Mulan to Storybrooke. That ep did make it clear that Robin would have a bigger role, attaching Mulan to him seemed logical.
I also like that Mulan's first instinct is to not trust people. She sees Neal, she recognized the style of clothing and she is suspicious (great contrast to Aurora's reaction). But Neal wins her over and boom, once Mulan is in your side, you can relax. Such a good partner for whatever errand you have to run. Which is why it makes sense that when Ruby asks if Mulan wants to join her on a search for werewolves, Mulan says yes. (Not like she has anything better to do.) Mulan craves a purpose. Imagine somebody would have introduced her to colorful textmarkers and color-coded itineraries. Belle showed her how useful information out of a book can be, they could have solved more situations together.

Who gets worse in the entire Descendants franchise? Lonnie or Audrey? I’ve heard that Lonnie was ignored by the fandom, even Descendants instagram didn’t show her as much while Audrey was a broken girl.
Interesting question, and I'd say it depends on how you look at it. (Also, I'm talking about just the movies here, because watching the animated show or reading the books, those are separate choices, and most people will just watch the movies.)
On one hand, Lonnie is given the grace of having her microaggressions toward the VKs largely forgotten/ignored by the franchise, much like Jane, whereas Audrey's microaggressions are taken 100% seriously. On the other hand, they botched the cultural aspects of Lonnie's character on so many levels I'm not qualified to outline (like, her name, her wardrobe, etc.), and Audrey didn't get that axis of mistreatment.
In Lonnie's case, it was more like the series was cheerfully dismissive of her. The writing says, "We don't care about her internal life; she's here to move forward one story beat in the first movie and rehash the plot of Mulan in the second movie and then we're done with her." (Narratively, that is. Beyond that, she's there as continuity fanservice for people who like Mulan.) Lonnie finds out Ben has been captured. How does she react? She doesn't have any questions or concerns; she just wants to go with the VKs to save him so she can sword fight. Lonnie visits the Isle of the Lost. Wow, how would someone like her react to something like that? She doesn't. She gets there and she has a sword fight and she does a good job at the sword fight and she leaves, and Jay learns a lesson about how Auradon is sexist and really, thematically, the whole Lonnie thing was there as a way to have him acknowledge a good thing about his Isle heritage. In the first movie, she's there as the catalyst for the VKs to realize parents who love their kids treat them differently. In the second movie, she's there as a catalyst for Jay to realize that his upbringing had some positive aspects, too. (Granted, you could also make a real argument for Jay's arc in D2 being crafted around the idea "Lonnie but Mulan now" as an afterthought. Like, Lonnie is given more attention in that subplot than Jay is. But I think that's more symptomatic of the series never really knowing what to do with either of them.) But the writing likes her. Like, it doesn't care about her, but it likes her. She's treated like candy; they toss her in there as a treat.
The writing doesn't like Audrey, but it cares about Audrey. Her feelings get focus and have weight. She's not just there to do cool stuff or give focus to the protagonist's feelings or remind people of a good movie Disney made years before this one; she's a character with feelings and beliefs and experiences that are interrogated and explored. Not very well, but I'd say about as well as anyone's are. Like, how well do we know Mal? What does Mal believe in? What does Mal care about? What does Mal want? I would say we can answer those questions in about as much detail for Mal as we can for Audrey.
What does Lonnie want? Well, she wanted to join the R.O.A.R. team, and she did that now. I don't know what she wants now. What does she like? ...Cookies? Sword-fighting? What does she dislike? ...? Who is she close friends with? Who isn't she friends with? What, in the land of meticulously color-coded characters, is Lonnie's color?? Was she into R.O.A.R. in the first movie? She never seemed to be characterized as sporty until D2. She disappeared in D3. Why did she have that haircut if she didn't like it?? Lonnie is not insecure and does not have a strained relationship with her mother like Jane, so why does she have so little agency in her appearance? On a day to day basis, what do we expect Lonnie to habitually do? Well, she's captain of the R.O.A.R. team now, as of the end of the last movie she appears in, so...probably that. (In comparison, we know that Jane organizes school/kingdom events and sometimes delivers messages to her mother. We know Evie has a lucrative design business. We know that Audrey is a cheerleader and has been since before we met her, we know Audrey hangs out with Chad between classes, we know she's close to Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather.) That's the thing, is that we have little details of Lonnie that we can use to craft her character if we want to, but it's work the filmmakers didn't care to do. We know that Lonnie has a good relationship with her mom, we know that she likes and is good at sword fighting, we know that she's generally positive and energetic, and we know that she used to have a haircut she didn't like. I can't visualize a day in the life of Lonnie based on that; I would have to use my imagination and make up new things about her.
So, Audrey is a character who is treated spitefully by the writing, but she is a character who is allowed to feel and express feelings that are informed by her own wants, beliefs, and experiences. Lonnie cries in the first movie because she finds out the VKs' parents are neglectful, then in D2 she doesn't blink an eye when she goes to the actual island where villains and their kids live in squalor. Why? Because it's not plot-relevant for her to care, so she doesn't.

1) Does your OC have a voice claim, if so who?
2) Who's your OCs best friend? How did they become best friends?
3) What song describes your OC?
4) What song describes your OC and their partner/love interest?
For Kasiya and Alora :D
Putting under a cut bc it’s a little long!!!
Questions
Alora:
1) Does your OC have a voice claim, if so who?
— She doesn’t yet! BUT, this is her face claims voice if anyone wanted to listen. I do picture her with kind of a lower voice but not like Rosa from B99 lol
youtube
2) Who's your OCs best friend? How did they become best friends?
— If Alora had to pick a best friend (and Michi wasn’t an option lmao) she would pick Alex and then eventually later on JJ ( @chadillacboseman ). Alex is more like a brother to her but they became very close bc Alex likes to take Alora out to those all you can eat buffets and indoor arcades (even though there’s a list they’re banned from). Alex is also the one that gets her to let her guard down a little bit by just taking her out to have fun.
— JJ eventually becomes one of her best friends bc REASONS but I cannot SAY those REASONS. NOT YET AT LEAST LMAO.
3) What song describes your OC?
— So I have two! A few lyrics from this one
And pretty much this entire song— it summarizes how she feels about her dad one night (and it’s actually a fic in the works rn)
4) What song describes your OC and their partner/love interest?
— I answered this here!
Kasiya:
1) Does your OC have a voice claim, if so who?
— Also not yet! BUT here is her face claims voice :) I picture Kasiya with a bit of a rasp and a light accent, like how Cetrion speaks.
youtube
2) Who's your OCs best friend? How did they become best friends?
— Answered here!
3) What song describes your OC?
— Fight song. No lmao
IT IS A SILLY SONG TO SAY BUT HONESTLY? I did say she was very Ting Ting coded
4) What song describes your OC and their partner/love interest?

mulan joins the army (1939) is exactly the kind of film one would expect to be produced and very well received in china during the second sino-japanese war. like the majority of chinese films up to the 70s, feminism and the role of women and the traditional family in light of modern developments find themselves at the center of the film, as hua mulan struggles with the question of whether it is more filial to remain in her role within the traditional family or to step outside of that role to protect her father and serve her nation. she obviously chooses the second course, and the film richly rewards her for it: i have never seen a mulan film with less angst about mulan being outed as a woman or perceived as less capable because she is a woman, and indeed the revelation of her assigned sex at birth is not a plot point at all, but is rather the final afterthought of the film. the film’s main concern is patriotic duty and the importance of serving one’s nation in the fight against foreign invaders and traitorous elements. it does not take much thought to put together what this would have meant to directors and audiences in 1939, coded within historical fiction as it is. the film argues that youth, poverty, and even gender play no role in whether one can or cannot serve one’s country; interestingly, this is exactly the argument the red detachment of women (1961) would make twenty years later, except that the latter film presents its patriotic warriors as being detached or alienated from the traditional family and society, whereas this film presents filial piety and patriotism as twin virtues—embodied respectively in mulan and her eventual husband liu yuandu, thus setting them as perfectly complementary virtues—with the warriors perfectly ensconced within their families. the context and argument of mulan joins the army (1939) are fascinating, and the film overall is a very enjoyable piece of historical fiction to watch, and i would highly recommend it

hi lydia-isaac, i'm currently writing a fic focusing my mahariel warden and i wanted to have a scene where they cut their hair before leaving with duncan to symbolize change (think like zuko in atla, mulan, ashitaka from princess mononoke if you've seen those). But I also know that the Dalish are indigenous coded and I've heard that long hair is important in a lot of indigenous cultures. I don't want to accidentally put something insensitive in the fic
Hair is sacred, yes. In my own people's traditional beliefs, our hair carries thoughts and prayers to the Creator, and it's a source of strength - I think this is the same for many other Indigenous cultures as well. And in modern times, there are many people who even though they don't follow traditional beliefs, still hold onto long hair because it's a sign of identity.
However, with that said, there are Indigenous cultures where a person may cut their hair in mourning the death of a loved one, or if they go through a huge change and see themself as becoming a new person. That sounds like it aligns with what you're thinking already, so I personally view it as a valid writing choice that is not disrespectful. But if you want to be extra thoughtful, you could have your warden burn their cut hair with sweetgrass or tobacco.
