Extinct Animal Art: POST 1
I've been creating some assets for @palearaptor's Twitch streams. From time to time she has daily dino segments so I made some arts for them. <3 Here's the ones released so far.
ANCHIORNIS:
Tumblr media
A winged dinosaur from the late Jurassic. We know its colors! Dark grey to black body with some white striping and flight feathers. It had a red crest.
ANUROGNATHUS:
Tumblr media
Not a dinosaur! This little critter was a pterosaur from the later Jurassic. There were a few species, but this art is based on the holotype Anurognathus ammoni.
HETERODONTOSAURUS:
Tumblr media
An early Jurassic dinosaur whose name means "different tooth." This is an herbivore, but probably used those sharp teeth for defense and display.
MIRAGAIA:
Tumblr media
A stegosaurid dinosaur with the longest neck of all stegosaurs so far. Like all stegosauridae, it lived during the Jurassic period. There's some debate on how its spines were arranged, but this is the most accepted so far. It did NOT have shoulder spines like kentrosaurus.
PROTOCERATOPS:
Tumblr media
Protoceratops, a dinosaur from the late Cretaceous. Although its name means "first horned face," it actually came AFTER some of the more popular ceratopsians like Diablo ceratops. It is still considered an "early" ceratopsian. It was famously tangled in a life-and-death struggle with a velociraptor where both animals died and were fossilized together.

text from porter robinson's "goodbye to a world"
every single animal in this comic is extinct. it's not too late for the ones that are left.
edit: thanks @mudcrabmassacre for the correction, smilodon fatalis did not in fact go extinct in 1023 AD. the actual prediction is around 10,000 years ago - I think i may have missed a zero or two.

Its 2024!!! Happy new year, or happy new year's eve depending on where in the world you are.
And a great time to begin a new art challenge. I have a list of extinct birds for january, starting (ofc) with the passenger pigeon. These are such a great representative species for extinct birds imo - they used to be one of the most numerous birds on Earth, numbering in the billions, yet they vanished within a century. So gorgeous too!
As a communally roosting bird, their sheer numbers used to snap even large branches and they often piled on top of each other to roost. And then. Poof. None left.

Some irl animal lore:
Spotted hyenas once had ranges that stretched far outside of Africa and into more northerly latitudes across Europe and into Russia. It’s possible they could have reached the British Islands via the land bridge that formed due to lowered sea levels (it is referred to as “Doggerland”).

🧵 Passenger Pigeon - Extinct | tip | comms
I finally finished this pigeon!
None other than the passenger pigeon I originally made in May, 2021. I reworked the original pixels and set out to stitching. This design has 3,106 stitches, so it took me roughly 31+ hours to finish!
Originally, this pattern had flowers, but once I had stitched them, I absolutely hated them. I ripped them all off, scarring the canvas a bit (😞), and redesigned the whole thing. It was not the funnest part of the process.
Anyway, I'm pretty darn happy with the colour palette I hand-picked for this piece. A lot of work went into it 😭 I hope you like her!
Do you have any extinct animals you'd like to cross-stitch? 👁💋👁

Day 18 of extinct birds - the Carolina parakeet or Carolina conure
The Carolina parakeet was one of only three species of parrot native to the US. They were very social birds, found in large flocks, and multiple females will lay eggs in a single nest. Interestingly, they were known to eat a lot of cocklebur seeds which are toxic (at least to mammals). Another interesting thing is that the last captive parakeet died in the same cage that the last passenger pigeon died, 4 years after.
