Confession: I have never struggled so much with being vegan as I have over these past two weeks! The wedding we went to had an all-vegan dinner which was amazing but it was my only sit-down meal that didn’t require a struggle. We are in a very quaint, quiet place in the south of France and since I normally never have any issues anywhere I go I didn’t prepare more than I would traveling any other place. Normally at restaurants I glance at the whole menu, and if there isn’t a vegan meal on it I check out what ingredients are used for other things - sides, veggies, that sort of thing... And I ask the kitchen to prepare me something. Or, I’ll modify an existing dish (remove the cheese, fish, meat etc). 9 times out of 10 people are super accommodating and in bigger cities there are always types of cuisine I can count on for vegan food (Japanese, Indian, Chinese, Libanese food... The BEST😍) but here in this part of France it’s all French food and restaurants are not very keen to modify anything🙈😅 The dishes are what they are and the menu is what it is - if you don’t like it, go elsewhere. We have had a kitchen in two of the places we’ve stayed but we were only there for two days so it didn’t make sense to stock up the fridge and then have to throw away all the food. There is one place here with a vegan lasagna and I’ve had it like seven times😂 And the restaurants here don’t do to-go food (so when it’s dinner time and we have to take baby home to sleep for the night we are shit out of luck altogether)💩 . The supermarket here is tiny, there is no hummus, no veggie spreads.. There are vegetables and fruits obvi so baby and I have basically lived off of berries, avocados, fresh (amazing) bread and local olive oil for two weeks. The first days were amazing but if I see one more baguette I’m going to smack someone on the head with it! We fly to Stockholm tomorrow and I’M SO READY! OpenTable is an app which makes cultural immersion through the sharing of cuisines simple. Once you have created an account which includes a family name, number of family members, type of food you generally eat, cuisines you are interested, and weekend availability. The app then matches you with another family in the are who is interested in the food your family usually eats, and usually eats the food your family is interested in. Once a match is made an both families agree to meet at proposed time the OpenTable dinner-date is on!

How does this app provide an immersive experience? - The entire experience is built on the hospitality and interaction of families. Cooking together and sharing a meal fosters a welcoming environment to learn about other perspectives and cultures. By learning how to cook new recipes people can obtain a deeper understanding of the richness of culture and tradition. The food can act as a catalyst to more meaningful discussion. Eating together as a family can positively improve the family dynamic. The best part is that this will not cost the family any more money than their meal would have cost at home!

Week 10 additional stuff

Welp. The real quest actually lies as we finish up the entire collection and arranging them. However, a while ago, we were tested. 2 History professors went inside the Silid Balangay and started to look for 15 books about History for their research. I was shocked. I didn’t that they would be finding books this early, knowing that the library is currently being cataloged and finished by none other than, yours truly  (lol I wasn’t even prepared that 2 of them at once, would ask for books). But I kept my calm. I know I can handle this. Just like any regular librarian, one has to handle the situation calmly and without arrogance and apathy. I searched the database wherein all the books I encoded were located. I have successfully found the 10 books for Sir Guiang and 5 books for Sir Santillan. Whew. I can only imagine the joy that I had when I found the books that they were looking for. Sir Neil even told me that “I was not wrong asking for a SLIS student. You never disappoint.” I was like woah. Did he really say that? Am I dreaming? After Sir Neil went out, Moselle approached me and congratulated me. I told her that I am not going to be congratulating or accepting any congratulations for myself, not until I finish arranging the collections and finishing the teaching session for Sir Vic Villan and at the same time, teach the Silid Balangay people especially Vin and Ma’am Bianca on basic cataloging processes and preservation practices that they can employ. Moselle admitted to me at first that she never knew what I was doing during my first weeks in the Silid Balangay. She thought I was just there to goof of. She never saw my predecessor, Jude Abang because she became the Graduate Assistant last February 23, 2018 (10 days after Jude finished the 700 books for the Silid  Balangay). She was curious on how I do things so I taught her about LIS and some of its quirks and nuances. She, a political science major from UP Manila was amazed at how LIS was conceived and currently lashes through the fields of knowledge. I told her explicitly that being an LIS major entails a lot of courage and passion. You need to have the courage to face the world that you are an LIS student, that you will face all types of discrimination against someone who constantly belittles the program like he/she is any better than it. You need to have the passion as well. LIS is not an easy program. Like what I stated in the past journals, LIS is more than just sitting for 8 hours in the Library. We are beyond the library. Archives, Museums and Knowledge Centers are also places where you can find LIS people working. We are just rebranding ourselves. Perhaps, the reason why she didn’t know anything about LIS is because UP Manila has no LIS program. I also went to their library and god, I believe that the CAL Library is WAAAAYYY better than their library. If you did not put an effort in branding your library, chances are, people will not recognize you. The same thing happened to Moselle. I talked to her about this and she agreed. I just hope that UP Manila will change its branding of the library services it caters to the students and staff. Nevertheless, I am so happy I was able to change someone else’s perception of the LIS program.
