in june of 2019 i had a bilateral mastectomy as a cancer preventative. as a woman though we are told to define ourselves by our breasts. breasts are sexualized, and is often how others define our sexiness. i’ve been having to redefine sexy for myself, and rediscover my sexuality. i’m on a mission to show that even after a mastectomy women are sexy, and powerful in their sexuality. i’m not sure how to do that yet, but i’m hoping to start a discussion.

POV: you’re at a red light, look in your rear view mirror, and you see me topless, lightly pinching and rubbing my nipples, and when I realized you’re watching, I smile and give you a little wave.

The Free the Nipple Movement
Yves Saint Laurent Spring/Summer 2023 Ready-to-Wear Collection
The women’s ‘Free the nipple’ movement is one of the most important campaigns in feminism, protesting the inequality between sexualising men and women’s bodies. The movement grew in momentum following the preproduction of the American Free The Nipple documentary in 2012 by Lina Esco.
Free the Nipple challenges the double standard and unequal legislation of male or female torso nudity. While men are allowed to parade their topless chests, women are forced to cover up while also being expected to show a little so that they can still be sexualised. It is the nipple that men are allowed to show, but it is everything except the nipple for women. Despite biological reasons for women to be allowed to go topless such as for breastfeeding, women are still not allowed the equal rights men possess around their bodies. Something as little as going without bra is still quite taboo. Many women have taken to going braless for both comfort and activist reasons.
Seeing models wear sheer dresses, braless, down the runway for YSL is such a huge step forward for women. There is no sexualisation, or unnecessary attention brought to the breasts, they are simply just a part of the model.

Okay but. When did this stop? Why have we stopped fighting for this? I hate the fact I'm not allowed to go topless.

I dress not to appeal the male gaze but to scandalize my very conservative, very hypocrite lab technician who hates me not wearing a bra with a PASSION it gives me so much joy

Excited for the cultural shift which will enable me to be topless in public while still being respected by my fellow human beings.
