Castletown Café Episode 26: Ralsei’s Cauldron Cake

In the beginning of Deltarune Chapter 2, we return to the Dark World located within the school's supply closet. This becomes the main hub where Darkeners from all kinds of Dark Worlds call home after their respective fountains are sealed. After the inhabitants of the Card Kingdom move in and you've explored the town named after your save file, you get to explore Ralsei's castle! Greeting you upon your entrance is a huge cauldron, which Ralsei explains as the cauldron he does all his cooking with. During the cutscene, a cake rockets out of the cauldron, complete with explosion sound effects. As it falls, Susie catches it in her mouth and devours the entire thing, claiming it to be thick on the frosting. But all that frosting makes for a pretty cake!

I recall another cake popping out that Susie also devours on the second interaction with the cauldron, where she says something about it being chocolate-flavored. Unfortunately, I don't see a lot of recordings about later cauldron interactions, so I should replay again sometime to see if this happens or not. The final time, however, Susie asks for a strawberry cake as a room-warming gift (which may or may not happen until after you visit the rooms on the top floor...yep, I need to replay). Ralsei tells her there is a slice of cake in her fridge, and Susie protests that it's "not cauldron-fresh".

As I thought of the different kinds of food that appear in this game, from consumable items to cutscene-related foods, the Caldron cake had been brewing in my mind since last year. Originally I thought it'd be great for October, but I found the flavor to be more appropriate for summer: a Neapolitan cake. Three layers of strawberry, vanilla, and chocolatey goodness with likewise-flavored frosting! Why not, after all, combine the flavors together into one tall, beautiful cake?

But life decided to throw wrenches in this plan. For one, there had been a shortage of buttercream frosting. Said frosting was unavailable in all nearby stores, across all brands, and even online, buttercream was overpriced. I assumed scalpers were snatching the stuff up to sell for a higher price. Even in 2023, we're still feeling the effects of the pandemic, and as such, some ingredients are difficult to get your hands on.

It seems that life was trying to tell me to make my own frosting, as unsurprisingly, the scalpers I tried to buy frosting from didn't place them in a box with cooling packs during the hottest month on Earth ever recorded (this all took place a month prior to the writing of this blog entry). So, of course, the seals burst when travelling under the heat dome that had covered a good portion of the country, though I don't know exactly WHERE the seller was located.

That's when I found recipes for a type of frosting I had never heard of before: ermine frosting. It's like buttercream, but way less sweet. You make a base using flour, sugar, and milk, cook it over the stove until it's thick like pudding, then cool it before whipping unsalted butter and adding your mixture to that plus vanilla and a pinch of salt. So I made two ermine frostings, one vanilla, and one strawberry. I had already purchased some chocolate frosting so I didn't need to make chocolate, but I came up with a recipe for chocolate ermine frosting included in the recipe portion of this blog entry.

Summer may not be the best season to make cakes, given the warm weather. Because many homes in Oregon, especially older ones, don't have air conditioning pre-installed, I needed to keep the cake refrigerated to prevent the frosting from melting and the cake from falling apart, as a precaution. Therefore, spring would be a better season to make this cake, this way, there may be less worry of melting.

I fought a lot of obstacles, and learned a lot as well making this cake. While it is an involved project, especially since you may need or want to make different flavored frostings (which taste way better than the pre-made stuff), the cake itself isn't that tough. While a Neapolitan cake may sound daunting as you're making a cake with three different flavors, all you really need to do is just make a large amount of vanilla batter, divide it into three batches, and add cocoa to one bowl and strawberry reduction to the other.

For the strawberry cake, you first need to make strawberry reduction. You take half a cup of strawberry puree and cook it in a saucepan over medium-low heat to reduce the amount of liquid. After a while, you should end up with 1/4 cup of thick strawberry puree. You don't need to make a reduction for the frosting however, just take another half-cup of unreduced puree.

For the chocolate, combine three tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder with three tablespoons of hot water, stir, and let sit for a few minutes before adding it into the cake batter. This lets the cocoa "bloom", adds moisture to the cocoa, and also explains why you add a couple tablespoons of hot water or coffee to a chocolate cake (if you make it from scratch). This gave me the idea to do the same thing if you were to make a chocolate ermine frosting.

Because this is a big project, I found it easiest to divide making the reduction, frosting, cake, and assembly over three days. On Day 1, I thawed about 1 and 1/2 cups of frozen strawberries, pureed them in the blender, and then used half a cup of it in the strawberry frosting. After that, I made the vanilla frosting, and finally, the strawberry reduction.

Day 2 came the cake baking. I followed the recipe by My Cake School, making a vanilla batter, dividing it into three, and adding the strawberry reduction to one batch and the cocoa to the other. While I made the cake during the nighttime so they'd be ready the next morning, I think it's best to store them in the freezer overnight. BUT FIRST! Once your cakes are cool, remove them from the pans and level the tops of your cakes so they're nice and even. Then you can store them in the freezer. This way the cakes will be easier to assemble and decorate the next day.

The final day was the day I assembled and decorated the cake. These pictures show the pattern I used for the filling: rings of strawberry, vanilla, and chocolate frosting.

The pattern inside:

As a three-layer cake, it has two layers of delicious frosting filling in between. The chocolate cake is usually the densest, so it often is the bottom layer, which I recommend. You can layer your cake any way you want, I put the vanilla in the middle and the strawberry on top, even though the strawberry cake is probably denser and should go in the middle, though it worked out fine for me.

The cake would get placed in the freezer after each cake was stacked on top of a filling layer. This made it easier for the cake to stick together and for the frosting to be firmer, to make the cake as a whole easier to decorate. I suggest 15 to 20 minutes for each time the cake gets returned to the freezer.

The next step was to seal the cake in a crumb coat, which I used a thin layer of the vanilla ermine frosting for. Professionals use this trick all the time, to keep the cake crumbs sealed inside and to prevent mess when the final layer of frosting is applied. The cake gets frozen again after the crumb coat to give the cake a smoother and more solid surface when decorated.

I then applied strawberry frosting on the top and around the topmost sides, covering the strawberry layer. Vanilla was piped in the middle, with chocolate on the bottom. Between applying the different frostings, I returned the cake to the freezer at 20 minute intervals to prevent the sides from getting too messy and the frosting from mixing.

Lastly came the decorative blobs of frosting on top, arranged in an alternating circular pattern of strawberry, vanilla, and chocolate. On the bottom of the cake, a border of chocolate frosting is piped around the circumference. A delicious project like this was worth the time and effort! It is a delightful, edible work of art.

RALSEI'S CAULDRON CAKE:

Strawberry reduction:

About 1 cup (or more) fresh strawberries, or 2 cups frozen

1/2 cup strawberry puree, from either fresh or frozen strawberries (I thawed about 2 cups of frozen strawberries so I'd have 1/2 cup of puree for the reduction, and another 1/2 cup for the frosting)

Note: You'll need about 1 cup of puree because while half will be reduced for the cake batter, the other half goes into the strawberry ermine frosting. You'll have leftover puree that you can use for whatever you want. The reason I'm overestimating is to make sure there's plenty for the cake and for the frosting.

Either wash, dry, hull, and slice enough fresh strawberries for 1 cup of puree, OR thaw about 2 cups of frozen strawberries.

Place fresh or thawed frozen strawberries into a blender or food processor and use the puree setting.

Measure 1/2 cup for the reduction and pour into a saucepan over medium heat. Cook for 10 minutes or until liquid is greatly reduced, leaving you with 1/4 cup of a thick strawberry puree. Have it cool and set aside. If you're doing the cake over multiple days, store the reduction in your refrigerator.

Vanilla ermine frosting (from Nagi on recipetineats):

1 cup granulated sugar

5 tablespoons all-purpose flour

1 cup milk

2 sticks (1 cup) unsalted butter

1 pinch salt

1 & 1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Remove unsalted butter from your refrigerator and set it out to soften. Measure your sugar and flour, and add them to your saucepan.

Turn on your stove to medium heat and give your flour/sugar mixture a good stir with a whisk for about 30 seconds or so.

While whisking, slowly pour in the milk to avoid lumps from forming.

Keep stirring with your whisk as your mixture cooks and thickens. This is to prevent your roux from sticking to the bottom of the pan or burning.

Once your frosting base has reached a pudding-like consistency, it's ready. The thicker it is, the more structure your frosting will have.

Pour your frosting base into a bowl and cover the surface with food wrap to prevent a skin from forming.

After your frosting base has cooled completely (and if you stored it in the fridge overnight, take it out to let it soften for an hour or more so it mixes easily with the butter), beat your softened butter on medium speed for a few minutes. You want the butter to go from a pale yellow to a near-white.

Once your butter has been whipped for a bit, slowly add your frosting base, a spoonful at a time. It should take a minute or two to add the entire base to your butter.

Add salt and vanilla, and keep beating for a few more minutes until your frosting has reached its desired consistency.

Strawberry ermine frosting (from Mimi on eatsdelightful):

1 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup strawberry puree

1/2 cup milk

1/3 cup flour

2 sticks (1 cup) unsalted butter

1 tsp vanilla extract

1 pinch salt

Measure another 1/2 cup of leftover strawberry puree from making the reduction for the cake, or that more frozen strawberries/hull and slice more fresh strawberries and puree in a blender or food processor if you need more. Set aside.

Once again, set aside another 2 sticks of unsalted butter to soften.

Combine flour and sugar in a saucepan over medium heat and stir with a whisk for about 30 seconds.

While whisking, slowly pour in the milk to avoid lumps, and then the strawberry puree.

Keep stirring your frosting base until thickened, just like with the vanilla frosting base.

Once the consistency has reached that of a thick pudding, pour into a bowl, cover the surface to prevent a skin from forming, and let cool completely.

Once the frosting base has completely cooled, whip unsalted butter on medium speed for a few minutes.

Slowly add in strawberry frosting base to the whipping butter, a spoonful at a time, over the course of a minute or so.

Add salt and vanilla, then keep whipping for a few more minutes until your frosting has reached the desired consistency.

Bonus: Chocolate Ermine Frosting (based off of the strawberry ermine frosting recipe):

3 tablespoons cocoa powder

3 tablespoons hot water

1 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup milk

1/3 cup flour

2 sticks (1 cup) softened unsalted butter

1 tsp vanilla extract

1 pinch salt

Combine 3 tablespoons of cocoa powder with 3 tablespoons of hot water in a small bowl. Stir together and set aside.

Set aside another 2 sticks of unsalted butter for softening and combine sugar and flour in a saucepan over medium heat, whisking for 30 seconds.

Slowly add in the milk while whisking to avoid lumps, then add in the cocoa mixture. Stir to combine.

Stir constantly while your frosting base cooks and thickens. When it reaches a pudding-like consistency, it's ready.

Pour mixture into a bowl and cover the surface to prevent a skin from forming. Cool completely.

After the frosting base has completely cooled, whip butter for a few minutes on medium speed until light in color and fluffy.

Slowly add the frosting base a spoonful at a time over the course of a minute or longer.

Add salt and vanilla and continue to beat for another few minutes until the frosting has reached the desired consistency.

The cake itself (from Melissa Diamond on My Cake School):

3 cups cake flour, spooned and leveled

2 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp salt

1 & 1/4 cups buttermilk (or 1 & 1/4 cup milk mixed with 1 tablespoon lemon juice and sat aside for 5 or more minutes if you can't find buttermilk)

1/4 cup vegetable oil

2 tsp vanilla extract

1 & 1/2 sticks (or 3/4 cup) softened unsalted butter

2 cups sugar

4 large, room temperature eggs

3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder

3 tablespoons hot water

1/4 cup strawberry reduction

Get the butter out and let it reach room temperature. After that, set out other cold ingredients such as eggs, buttermilk, and the strawberry reduction. Gather the rest of your ingredients as well, so they're all together.

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F, and grease and flour three 8x2 cake pans.

Spoon and level 3 cups of cake flour into a sifter, add baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Sift together into a mixing bowl, then stir together for 30 seconds. Finally, set aside your dry ingredients.

Measure and combine buttermilk, vanilla, and vegetable oil in another mixing bowl and set aside.

In yet another mixing bowl, whip softened unsalted butter on medium speed until smooth. Add your sugar, a little at a time, then keep mixing for another few minutes, anywhere from 3 to 5, until your butter and sugar is fully creamed together, light, and fluffy.

Add eggs, but only one at a time as you beat. Once the yolk disappears and is fully incorporated, add in the next egg, beat, etc., etc.

Once all the eggs are in and beaten, reduce the speed to low and alternate between adding the flour mixture and the buttermilk mixture, starting and ending with the flour mixture. Just remember the pattern: flour, mix, buttermilk, mix, flour, mix, buttermilk, mix, flour, mix. Stop immediately once everything's fully incorporated to prevent overmixing.

You've made an enormous batch of vanilla cake batter! Now's the time to divide it up into three flavors. Here's how to divide it evenly: the batter should yield about 7 and 1/2 cups....divide that by three....and you have 2 and 1/2 cups of batter for 3 bowls.

Combine 3 tablespoons of cocoa powder with 3 tablespoons of hot water in a small bowl. Stir and set aside for a few minutes.

This is a good time to add the strawberry reduction to one bowl for the strawberry batter. Just pour in that thickened strawberry puree and carefully fold it in to combine, in order to prevent over-mixing the batter. Once you've got yourself a bowl of pink cake batter without any vanilla swirls remaining, your strawberry batter is ready!

Now, pour in the cocoa mixture into another bowl of cake batter, and gently fold it in, until the batter is completely chocolatey. You remaining vanilla batter will be left as-is.

Now that we have all three flavors ready, we can finally pour them into our prepared cake pans. Give these a good gentle tap on the counter to remove any huge air pockets. If you want, you can wrap the sides of each cake pan (before filling them with batter, of course) with wet baking strips to ensure an even bake, which will hopefully make later leveling much easier.

Stick your cakes in the oven on the same middle rack to ensure they all bake together at the same time, about 25 to 30 minutes, depending on how hot your oven runs. They may not all fit on one rack, so you can just put in two in one 25 to 30-minute interval and bake the remainder in the other. To check when they're done, insert a toothpick in the center of each cake. If they come out clean with just crumbs, they're done!

Let your cakes cool before removing them from the pan.

Once your cakes have cooled, get your cake leveler and level them so that they're even. If you don't have a leveler, a knife may do, however, they may not be as even this way.

If you're assembling and decorating the next day or later, wrap and store cakes in the freezer. Freezing them will make it easier to crumb coat, pipe on filling, frost and decorate.

Take out your frostings and let them soften to room temperature. Get three piping bags fitted with the tips of your choice, and stand them up in glasses to make them easier to fill.

Place your bottom cake layer (the chocolate is usually the densest, so it's best to use that one as the bottom layer) on a round cake board. Set it down on a turntable or small Lazy Susan and pipe in an arrangement of the strawberry, vanilla, and chocolate frostings.

Place your second layer on top and freeze for 10 minutes or so to harden the frosting. Take out, and then pipe on another layer of the three frostings in whatever pattern you'd like. Top with the top cake layer and freeze again.

Remove stacked cakes from the freezer and pipe on a thin layer of vanilla frosting for the crumb coat. Cover the cakes in this thin layer to seal in the crumbs so you have a better surface to decorate your cake with. Freeze for 10 to 15 minutes for a more solid and sealed surface.

You can do whatever layer you want to start decorating with. I began with the top layer and worked downward. Pipe on a thick layer of frosting covering the top of the cake and smooth out with a frosting spatula or scraper, giving it that nice, flat top surface seen by professionals. Because the sides will have those strawberry-vanilla-chocolate stripes coinciding with the cakes, freeze between flavors to prevent your frostings from sticking and blending together. So, as an example, after you've done the top and the sides of the top layer of the cake, stick it in the freezer for about 15 or 20 minutes. Next, pipe on a layer of frosting matching the middle flavor and smooth it out like you did with the top flavor, and freeze again. Lastly, do the same for the bottom, then freeze. What I mean to say is: freeze between the stripes on the sides!

22. Now that the stripey sides are done as well as the top of the cake, we get to pipe on the fun blobs. One way to do it is to do big blobs of the three flavors on top in a pattern....or you could do whatever design you want. Don't forget to pipe a border around the very bottom of the cake to make it look nice and neat!

23. Your cake is done! Unless you want to add sprinkles, candles, or even candy. You decorate how YOU want, of course, this is just an idea going off of how I did it.

Ah yes, always a grand idea :D!

I'm gonna try and keep what I say here reasonably fresh as I don't feel like repeating what I've said about the bounciest boi in the past, though if anyone wants me to repeat myself lemme know because I'll definitely do it hehe :>.

I just wanna gush about Rouxls Kaard in terms of Lancer for a bit, firstly because I haven't done this much to begin with, and secondly because I ABSOLUTELY ADORE THESE TWO. Rouxls I don't care how much you complain about Lancer it's obvious you care for the kid's well being and you SHOULD because said kid is a pure precious cinnamon roll who couldn't hurt a mosquito. Every time I see fanart depicting Rouxls as being a parental guardian of sorts for Lancer it makes me melt because it's so PRECIOUS, honestly keeping an eye on Lancer is one of the only things Rouxls Kaard is good--or at least decent--at. And you can't tell me the "Lesser Dad" nickname isn't adorable, if you don't find that adorable then you have issues. I don't know if I've ever brought up this "surrogate guardian" sort of thing going on between these characters but I am now! 10/10, both Rouxls Kaard & Lancer are too beloved for this world, 'nuff said. (<- I still prefer Spade King as an overall parent/guardian don't worry lol.)

Speaking of Spade King though, I really like the situation he & Lancer are currently in father/son relationship-wise. It is pretty depressing at the moment, but that's honestly what makes it work. I love seeing new family dynamics in Deltarune, something fresh y'know? It's an entirely different scenario with more recent characters. I know how beloved the Dreemurr family are in the UT/DR community, and they're amazing characters for sure, but I really prefer Spade King & Lancer's dynamic. It feels more REAL. The events themselves aren't that realistic ofc, but the emotions & reactions both sides have feel more reasonable. I'm not sure if this is even making sense and I'm going on a tangent anyway.

But yeah, back to Spade King & Lancer. I love how we're actively going to SEE both characters (hopefully) work out their differences and begin to mend that relationship. And we also will likely see how each side's current situation affects them, likely in more ways than one. Sure, both Lancer & Spade King are mostly hiding such things behind a facade, but you KNOW it's there. And THAT is what makes it so impactful. You know both characters are going through such inner turmoil, especially Lancer. His father literally hates the only friends he's ever had, and that puts poor ol' Lancer smack in the middle of everything. It's like that feeling you get when two close friends are fighting and you're the mutual third party, but multiplied SO many times. Honestly, I've said it before, and I will say it again; a breakdown of SOME sort HAS to happen to Lancer at some point. I doubt Spade King will have such a moment because Spade King, but he'll still feel it inwardly I'm sure. There is no feasible way a literal CHILD can carry on the burden of so much without crumbling under the pressure.

Which brings me to something that I admittedly have mentioned before, but I just have to bring it up again. Lancer has gone through SO MUCH for a child his age. It's doesn't matter what age you headcannon Lancer as: What he has and is currently going through are things NO child should experience, EVER. I'm not even talking about only the Spade King situation anymore, I'm talking about EVERYTHING. What makes all Lancer has been through that much worse is the fact of him being AWARE of it all. He's not oblivious, and he's not clueless either. He's ASTONISHINGLY observant, ESPECIALLY for his age. I would even argue Lancer is one of the most observant Deltarune characters so far, even if he never announces it. He certainly hints at it here and there, like when he told Kris, Susie, & Ralsei that the other Darkners aren't major fans of him.

This entire thing makes me think of a line Lancer said during his battle alongside Susie with Kris & Ralsei. The first time you, as the player, tell Ralsei to "give the final blow of kindness" to Lancer, Susie blocks it off so Lancer can't hear. And Lancer says he's "blissfully ignorant". Call me crazy, but I don't think that specific phrase was an accident. Of course, Deltarune is only a game after all, so it was Toby Fox who put that line in. But if we think about this through the perspective of Lancer himself, I see him stating what he WISHES he was. He WISHES he was "blissfully ignorant" from everything around him: knowing the fact of the other Darkners not liking him to dealing with an impossibly complex parenting situation and everything in between.

See, I think there's a very unique tragedy with Lancer. One that most characters Toby Fox has created haven't been able to replicate. Think of Asriel from Undertale for a minute. Asriel had loving PARENTS, plural, and he even got a sibling in the form of Chara for a time. Asriel's entire family was well-respected and loved by the other monsters, and for the longest time, Asriel didn't have a lot of burdens to bear. It was only at the short time leading up to & including his own DEATH, & what came after, where things started to go downhill. Asriel essentially had it all while he was alive, then lost it upon death.

And now, think of Lancer. I would say Lancer is the exact opposite of Asriel in this way. First, Lancer's family is a crumbled mess. He barely knows his mother--Queen--has a biological father in the form of Spade King, who was (and certainly is) likely not a perfect parent, and that really only leaves Rouxls Kaard as a somewhat decent parental guardian. Already, we see a major difference. And once we broaden our view and see both kingdoms with their citizens, well, Asriel and Lancer could not possibly be more opposite. There was not ONE Darkner Lancer felt appreciated by, save for those above him in power & position, which is really only Spade King (ignoring the other Kings when they ruled). The ONLY time Lancer felt genuine connection with others was the day Kris & Susie first appeared in the Dark World. That is IT. Generally, in terms of how his current life has been so far, Lancer's is far from ideal. Hence, Lancer & Asriel are opposites in this case.

I think I've run out of things to say as far as this post goes lol, and it's already preeetty long. Though, let's end this post on a high note! Lancer has actual friends now, friends who will stand by for whatever support he may need. Heck, if Kris, Ralsei, & Susie--especially Susie--were all willing to respect Lancer's wishes and attempt to resolve everything peacefully with Spade King in Chapter 1, who KNOWS what's to come in future chapters! I for one can't wait to see where Lancer's story goes :)!

Mini dialogue that just jumped into my head. The premise is that after the events of Deltarune, Kris and Ralsei aren't sure if they're really friends, since most of their interactions were driven by the player. Eventually, they have a talk about it, which leads to this:

"So I guess what I'm saying is... maybe we could start over. Try and make friends for real. And even if it doesn't work out... at least it'll be our choice to say 'no, this isn't working, we're not cut out to be friends.' Instead of just... giving up and letting that thing keep controlling our lives, even now that it's finally gone. Does that make sense?"

"Yeah... that sounds nice actually. A fresh start, just for us this time." Ralsei smiles, and extends his hand. "I'm Ralsei. Prince of the Dark."

Kris doesn't quite smile, but there's a spark in their eyes and a smirk in their tone as they accept Ralsei's handshake. "Kris Dreemurr. High schooler by day, gremlin by night. Nice to meet you, Ralsei."

"It's nice to meet you too, Kris."

- Well, now instead of one you're dealing with three.

- Three that may fight at points, but overall, get along great.

- Susie is really the only one who would have trouble sharing at first.

- Kris is down with it if their friends are and Ralsei just wants everyone to get along.

- Once Kris and Ralsei know they both are obsessed with you, they have a better chance at compromising.

- When Susie learns of this, she will fight about it before chilling out when Ralsei tries to convince her along with Kris.

- You meet Noelle because Susie asks Kris to introduce you to her.

- You barely even get to meet Berdly.

- Toriel is just happy Kris is meeting more friends.

- Once the two feel you had enough, you're brought right back to Ralsei.

- He goes on and on about how much he missed you before hugging you.

- Ralsei is no doubt the most affectionate of the three.

- Kris depends, he can either be just as affectionate or not as much like Susie.

- Susie isn't really physically affectionate all the time, but there's moments.

- Ralsei is not one for aggressive punishments while Susie is.

- Again, Kris always seems to be the person in the middle.

- Having all three want to keep you makes your chances at escape even worse than before.

- They weren't even that big to begin with-

- Now Ralsei's convinced this is your new home if Kris and Susie like you just as much as him!

Sleepless Words

Rouxls Kaard x Reader

(Fluff, Gender Neutral Reader, Not Canon AU thingy.. idk, Y/n used)

Your constant struggle to sleep leads you to the balcony late at night, where a certain Duke suggests poetry to help your problem.

During the late hours of the night, most could find you awake in your room. It’s not like you chose to be up in the late hours of night, you’d love to sleep peacefully like your friends, but the problem was you simply couldn’t. You couldn’t quite pin it down to insomnia, it was more so that it became a habit from your teenage days. But now that you’re a young adult, you’ve found that this is quite annoying.

You’re tried everything to fall asleep at a decent time; Melatonin, peaceful music, Youtube videos, playing a game to exhaust yourself, and various other things. Nothing seemed to work, you’d always be up till 3am or later trying to sleep.

Recently, your sibling Kris and their friend Susie accidentally brought you into this place called the Dark World. You enjoy the place a lot and you've been staying down here even when Kris and Susie aren’t around. You stay for a few reasons, the main being that you have been studying the place since you’ve arrived. You’ve always been an explorer at heart, and the Dark World was beautiful. It always provided mystery along with amazing scenery and people.

Another reason that had you staying was a certain Duke, Rouxls Kaard. It might be crazy, but he really stuck out to you. His devotion to puzzles had your heart thumping. Sure they weren’t very good in terms of being difficult, but it’s clear that he puts his heart and soul into them; and that’s what really makes them special to you. Ever since arriving, you’ve been more and more interested in him. Of course as the cliché goes, you would never ever admit it to him. The only person you’ve ever admitted about your so-called ‘crush’ on Rouxls to was your sibling. They had a knack at figuring out your secrets, it was irritating at times but honestly you don’t mind for the most part.

Back to the present time at hand, it was currently two in the morning in Dark World time. Kris and their various friends were also staying in the Dark World, they had lied to their parents that they were at Kris’ for the night for a sleepover and you were watching them. Technically, yes, they were having a sleepover, just not where their parents thought. You were also technically watching over them too, just not at where their parents thought either...

Ralsei was nice enough to make everyone a room, including yourself. It suited your tastes so perfectly it made you question how the hell Ralsei could know. Maybe from the adventures you’d been on with the group, you suppose, but not this down to the nitty gritty.

At the moment, you lay face down in your bed. You’re frustrated with your lack of sleep, and at this point you can’t be bothered with actually laying the correct way. You sigh, deciding that maybe a walk around the palace could help. Maybe you’ll stop in the kitchen for some water and snacks, since you’ll be up for another hour or so.

Practically rolling yourself off the bed and onto your feet, you go to open your door. You try to open it as quietly as possible, but the door doesn’t bend to your will and instead creaks loudly. Hoping no one woke up from that, you hold still and wait for someone to investigate. After a minute with no one seeming to have woken up, you walk out into the hallway. Still trying to be quiet, you tiptoe your way out to the balcony for some fresh air.

The sky in the Dark World was very unlike the sky in the normal world. The best way to describe the way it looks is to picture that one edible glitter powder you put in sodas that’s probably just a bunch of micro plastics. That’s basically what the sky looks like, though it’s much better than the edible glitter.

For the second time tonight you sigh, looking up to the sky. Your thoughts wander to your previous adventures from the last month or so. Who knew saving the world and making friends within a strange world would ever be a part of your agenda. And falling in love as well… it makes your head spin honestly. Who knew a man with the strangest way of speaking and easy puzzles could whoo your heart so easily without even trying.

“Ah Y/n? What is thou doing outh here at thine hour?” You jump at the voice that suddenly appeared behind you. Speak of the devil, you turn around and see the one who’s stolen your heart. “Ah Rouxls, I couldn’t sleep so I decided to get some fresh air. But I could ask you the same thing.” Rouxls chuckles, making your heart pitter patter in the most cheesy way ever. He walks to stand next to you by the balcony, “Eh-he, ah so thine wisheth to knoweth why? Well thou shall see, I was sleeping quiteth peacefully but thenth I heard a loud sound that startledst thyself out of mine slumber. So thenth I decidededth to investigate the sound.”

You can feel yourself cringe, what luck it was that you happened to wake him up and cause him inconvenience. “Oh I'm sorry! That was me opening my door, I’m so sorry for bothering you.” Heat rises to your face and ears in embarrassment as you try not to make eye contact. “Oh no I did not mean- Do not worriesth dear, it was quite not a problemth, do not fret.” Rouxls seemingly stumbled on his words, clearly sensing your distress, and waved around his hands a bit. You smile and giggle at his behavior.

Minutes pass of silence, luckily it's only a little awkward. You were staring out at the sky when Rouxls breaks the silence. “So, Y/n, do thou often haveth troublest sleeping?” You shift yourself to lean against the balcony and turn your head toward him. “Yeah actually, it usually takes me till three am or later to sleep. It’s a habit I suppose, hehe..” You laugh a little at the end of your sentence to try not to seem so glum. Rouxls mimics your movements and leans against the railing, “I’ve tried what feels like everything to fall asleep but it seems like nothing works.” The sentence comes out quieter than you meant.

Rouxls hums in response, you look at him and it seems like he’s thinking about something. After what feels like minutes, Rouxls snaps his fingers and says, “Haveth you tried poetry?” You raise a brow and tilt your head. Of course you haven’t, because why would anyone in their right mind try poetry to fall asleep... You keep that thought to yourself, realizing it sounds pretty mean, and instead just shake your head. “Ah, I knoweth it may seemth strange. But maybe your lacketh of sleep mayst be from stress. I writeth poems to tryth to ease mine stress.”

Now that he put it that way, it did make more sense. Maybe it was stress, not sure from what but stress can be caused from lots of things. “That actually makes a lot of sense. But I don’t really know how to make poems…” You trail off, thinking for a moment about your past English class poetry failures. Embarrassing…

Rouxls chuckles, “Wellth than I may teacheth you, thy is the best after allst. Let’s go to mine room.” He begins to ramble on about how he’s the best at poetry, while leading you to his room. You space out a bit not really listening. Normally you would listen to his narcissistic-esc rants, you find it annoyingly cute, but not at two in the morning. But before you know it, you’ve walked right into his room.

“Hmm.. taketh a seat upon mine bed, as it shall be the most comfortablest place to writeth poetry.” Rouxls whispers as to not wake the others sleeping in a room nearby. You sit on his bed and look around his room. It really fit him perfectly, the room had an elegant look with a color scheme of blues, blacks, and whites.

Rouxls comes over to you and hands you some papers and pens. You assume he doesn't have pencils since it doesn’t really fit his style. He sits down next to you and explains how to write a basic poem. “Now you writeth a poem and I shall writeth one aswell, and hopefully it shallth make you tiredst.” You nod and begin to think about an idea. You try to think about your family or the scenery of the Dark World, but all you could think about was how close Rouxls was next to you. He was already writing down something on his paper, his eyebrows scrunched up a bit as he concentrated. You feel your face grow hot, and your thoughts flood with him. Without even realizing it, you start writing a poem about him;

‘The wind of the night calls out your name, As moon shines light upon your frame, I stand beside you admiring your elegant grace, A feeling of warmth clings to my face, I can only hope it goes unnoticed, As you talk and I try to stay focused, But my longing for you cannot subdue, My heart cannot help but intrude.’

Admittedly it wasn’t your best work, nor was it your worst, but it worked. Your eyelids begin to droop a bit and you know you should get up to go to your own room. But you don’t want to interrupt Rouxls, who is still focusing on his own poem. Without much thought you instead just lay down across his bed, practically falling asleep as soon as you hit the soft mattress.

When you wake up, you assume you only slept for maybe a few minutes. But the rays of sun shining on your face from the window say otherwise. Panic sets in as you look around and realize you never left Rouxls’ room. You were also not laying horizontal on the bed, instead you were now tucked into the blankets comfortably. You shift yourself up with your elbows and peer around.

Rouxls is nowhere to be found. Now worry is set in your heart, where did he go? Did you falling asleep scare him off? The sound of the door opening pulls you out of your thoughts, and in comes Rouxls with a cup of coffee. “Oh, you are awaketh. Good morning.” He smiles a bit, a little bit sheepishly but you’re not sure why. “Goodmorning, sorry about falling asleep in your room. I didn’t think I would pass out like that…” Your face becomes hot again, which has been happening a lot more than you’d like. Rouxls chuckles and sips his coffee, “It is no problemth, I am glad I couldeth help you could get some sleepth.” You get out of his bed and stretch. You thank him and begin to leave before realization sets in.

“Oh uhm uh by the way, did you read the poem I made?” You turn and look at him, his face notably shades in a slight dark blue tint. He definitely did. He totally did. “Oh my god I’m sorry bye!” You manage an apology and then with that you quickly exit and rush to your room. Your heart beats fast and your face heats up, this time out of absolute embarrassment, and you close your door. Jumping into bed face first, you whisper scream into your pillow. “I cannot believe this why am I like this oh my god why did I write about him and then fall asleep like it was nothing what did I think would happen..…” You shake your legs up and down, hitting your bed out of frustration. This is definitely in your top three most embarrassing moments.

A knock breaks your thoughts and you can only think the worst. It could be Rouxls here to reject you or it could either be Kris or one of their friends here to question you on why you were running down the hall; if they even saw you. Nervously you get up and open the door a bit. Of course it was Rouxls, why wouldn’t it be!

“Ahem uhm Y/n, I apologizeth for reading your poem withoutst your permission. I could noth but help to readth it, and I also cannot help but ask if perhaps.. it couldeth be about me..?” God. Why. You wanted to die on the spot honestly. You nod your head hesitantly and start to mutter apologies but he interrupts abruptly. “I seeth, do noth apologize. You see I…. feelth the same way. Ahem, and well I was wondering if maybeth you wouldst like to go outh on a date..” Rouxls cheeks were dusted dark blue in blush, his eyes avoiding your own and his hands behind his back in an almost polite, but awkward manner. “Of course! I would love to actually that would be amazing. When are you thinking?” Your heart was beating louding in your ears, you felt like he might be able to actually hear it, and your face was hot like it was on fire; which was actually becoming quite annoying and repetitive. “Tonighth at six? I haveth the perfect restaurant that I thinketh you might enjoy.”

The two of you make plans for dinner that night and he wishes you a farewell and heads off to his own room. When you close your door you feel like you might collapse. Correction, you actually do collapse. Luckily not in a bad way, just out of excitement and adrenaline. After a few minutes of processing you stand up and get ready for the day. Anticipation fills your body as for the first time ever, you can’t wait for the night to come quicker. Who knew a poem could solve not only your sleep problems, if even for a night, but also your love problems.
