anon, I love the timing of getting this ask on monday and then ao3 was down and I thought it would be awhile until I could effectively answer this ask but ao3 is back! yay!!! and then it took me three days to answer this because I couldn't make decisions!

yes, I still read schitt's creek fanfic! when I started compiling a list for this ask, I was going to do 10 fics but I've decided to rec 20: 10 multi-chapter fics and 10 one shots/single chapter fics. this way I get to include more fics and hopefully you find something you'd like to read! I love the Farm Witches a lot a lot, for many reasons, but let’s just focus on one so that I have a chance of actually finishing all 12 Days of Fandom posts before Epiphany.

One thing I really enjoy about the @farm-witches-fic-recs tumblr is their Friends of Farm Witches community recs. I like seeing what people say about what they’ve read—how they summarize their favorites, what they zero in on as the heart of a story, what qualities they appreciate. Even if someone just says, “I loved this, you will too,” there’s something so warm and friendly about that. It’s kind of the essence of fandom in a way.

I think long and hard about what to recommend each time they send out a call. I scroll through my bookmarks and I look back at what I've commented on. I try to choose something that I haven’t seen talked about recently, something that might be unexpected or new to someone. As I describe it, I think, okay, what is it that I liked? What is so appealing about this fic? And I like that whole process of selection, analysis, and then distilling it all into a few words.

The last round of community recommendations was posted in November (here and here), and I didn’t get my little fic rec submitted in time because I was sick that week. But I’d chosen something, and I felt bad about missing the deadline because it was seasonal. So I’ll tell you about it now instead:

The Polar Bears of Schitt’s Creek (@treepyful) David is skeptical when everyone around him is suddenly interested in jumping in the freezing waters of Schitt’s Creek for New Year’s. This fic follows his journey from discovering the flier announcing a polar bear plunge to caring for a bunch of wet fools in blankets. There’s trolling and banter and plenty of incorrectness, and maybe a few feelings of fondness sneak in as well.

If you’ve read that already, or if you are currently too cold to even read about a frozen creek, check out The Forest Between Us (also by @treepyful) instead. It’s a 5 + 1 focusing on Twyla and Patrick’s friendship, as it strengthens over a series of camping trips taken with the Rose siblings. Treepyful writes both good, fitting dialogue, and succinct but beautiful descriptions of the settings. It all combines to make a sweet but substantial story.

So, thank you, treepyful, for your fun and thoughtful writing, thank you, Farm Witches, for giving readers these opportunities to be involved, and thank you, all you invisible tumblr people (tumblrites?) who submit the recs each time.

I couldn’t pick just one of these wonderfully variable scenarios that all include just a little (or maybe a lot of) magic added to the perfect scene setting and banter.

Favored Nations (@blueink3)

ALL OF IT! It’s my go-to when I’m feeling down, when I need to revise our boys. The characters, writing, and plot are all amazing.

Amazing world building, very in character slow burn.

The ultimate slow burn, the perfect love story set amongst the wonders of Broadway and NYC.

It’s just so, so good! I am a sucker for secret romance fics, and this one has that and so much more. Add in some Shakespearean theater with a twist and just the right amount of angst and sexiness, it’s just perfect! I love it so much.

This author knows David, Patrick, and the NY theater world inside and out. The volume and level of specificity, volume, tenderness, anxiety, and love of these characters and worlds is astounding. The characterization is so vivid, it's the easiest fic to forget isn't canon.

Fifteen hundred miles (morehuman)

I go back to this fic a lot! I just love the idea of them both challenging themselves and finding out what they are capable of.

The most incredible journey, a gift to go along with them in it.

I love this transportative, visual feast of historic fiction. Luscious WW2 Paris is so vividly portayed and David’s wild, wealthy, LGBTIQ+out flamboyance juxtaposed to the farm-boy turned military-man Patrick is sexy and sweet. It undoes me every time. I actually first came to the piece via FairManor’s outstanding podfic. Both the text and the podfic are high art. It’s not just one of my favorite fan-fics. It’s one of my favorite stories of ALL time in any genre. I read/listen and I am at the Gaston, riding on the back of Patrick’s motorcycle, kissing in windmills, eating crepes, touring junk shops & dancing naked to 40’s blues. I’d give anything to see this as a film with Dan & Noah & cast. I want a leather bound print copy of it. Also - The epilogue is progressive, heartbreaking thoughtful genius. I’ve just finished rereading & listening to it again. Each time there are new Easter eggs to be found. Joyous.

It's just the most beautiful piece of writing ever written. Descriptive, lyrical, hot, stunning, heartbreaking. It has everything.

Achingly sweet and fluffy all set in the perfect baseball/famous AU with secret relationship AND musician Patrick. I come back to reread this one a lot!

What isn't there to love? Baseball, long distance relationship, sex, songs, coming out to the parents, coming out to the team, coming out to the world, excellent use of side characters....I could go on and on. There are so many amazing fics out there, but I've read this one at least a dozen times!

A beautifully written story of our boys meeting on vacation. Their trip is so sweet and so hot, and when they say goodbye, it's heartbreaking. The twist- they are both famous in their own worlds but don’t recognize each other so don’t realize who the other has hooked up with. When their week ends, they try to maintain a long-distance friendship as they learn who the other is. What was a hot hookup becomes a slow burn, and it’s amazing!!

Gorgeous writing, the perfect mix of canon and AU, clever plot, great dialogue. The fic I read over and over. It’s as comforting as a warm blanket.

This enemies-to-lovers-to-secret-husbands story featuring Patrick Brewer as a firefighter, is deliciously tropey and blazing hot, but also it’s written with such authentic emotion and perfect banter that it keeps me coming back to read it whenever I need a mood lift.

This is a perfectly paced one-shot AU that builds a world in which David is a brilliant, stormy, reclusive artist whose whose treatment by the press (and one Sebastien Raine) has made him unwilling to engage with the world…. Until he meets an intuitive and kind art writer who sees him for everything that he is (and can be). All of characters here are perfect and I love the descriptions of David’s art.

The story arc and pacing are fantastic. I love how David and Patrick's relationship develops and how Patrick learns to open himself up again after grief. It's incredibly well written. I've read it so many times, from full read thrus to dipping in and out of my favorite moments and chapters.

Patrick is so heartbroken, but then he meets David. So romantic, and feels lived in.

Scout's Honor Series - Michael and Greta just have a special place in my heart and always will. For me, this one also allows us to see a bit more of a full human side to Patrick who is one of my favorite characters of all time. I think I enjoyed the second installation the most with Patrick moving & coming out to his parents!

Knockdown Turnaround - This is a continuation of Knockdown Pitch by eringiles, and I just love it so much. They did such an incredible job with the characters of their fic that the continuation pretty much wrote itself. It was also a moment in this fandom that I felt kind of a part of something. Like, wow. Here we are just loving each others stories and getting inspired. I really appreciate eringiles for letting me write this!

Fine - Probably doesn't come as much of a surprise, my friend! I love angst. I love when things almost fall apart and then we get to see how they come back together. Life is hard. It's not perfect. But isn't it great to know that sometimes, sometimes it does work out? The response to this fic has given me so much confidence in my writing and that's in large part because of you, @hullomoon.

Cluckin' Around - This was my first fest fic! I was able to live out my lil rural country farm dream, and just know that calling the hens "the girls" is something that my neighbors do to this day. Also, after this fic came out, @farm-witches-fic-recs recommended it, and I don't know, it just felt really validating to be recognized by such a sweet and amazing blog that is doing SO MUCH WORK for this fandom. I still can't believe they've read my work.

Drunk on Your Kisses - I read this fic whenever I truly feel like love is dead. Haha! It's such a cute fic that (I think) showcases how insatiable you can get when you're first with someone and you can't get enough of their kisses. I especially love it because we get to see Patrick loosen up a bit and admit that he's a little obsessed with kissing David Rose. (Who wouldn't be?)

Again, my friend, thank you for asking! I haven't been writing as much lately and that's not a good or bad thing for me, but it's the reality! I am so lucky to know you through this fandom!
