Kaijujam 3: Kaiju Quest

Post GDC, I needed to change up my workflow and have a little breather when it came to The Skeleton King. I had been burning the candle at both ends a bit.

So, I joined Kaijujam 3 and tasked myself with learning a little bit of GB Studio. I just had to mix it up to get the creativity going again. 

GB Studio is a fantastic tool. I used a similar workflow to that of The Skeleton King with making tiles in Aseprite and then moving it to LDtk to build scenes and dump into GB Studio. Wrestling with the hardware constraints of the Game Boy can definitely be tricky but so satisfying.

It was the jolt of inspiration I needed. The Game Boy was my first video game hardware of my own, I have it tattooed on my arm with a banner saying “life full of adventure” so it is extra special to me to be making a game on the platform.

Kaiju Quest isn’t fleshed out completely. It is a bit ad-hoc at the moment to meet the jam time constraints but will be fleshed out more over time as I need a breather from The Skeleton King.

I was really inspired by Pokemon Red/Blue, Dragon Warrior Monster, Eastward and Earthbound and want to continue to explore this project over time. So I hope you join me. 

I recently took down the browser link because the controls were busted but the Game Boy rom is currently available here.

"ELLY'S ADVENTURE" is a small funny game of action. I made most of it. It invokes a graphical style much like a certain handheld device that changed the world. It's a game of simple patterns, of movement, of how fun it is to play with toys. It is about a girl on a journey to get back what's most important. It is not a particularly long or demanding game but I hope you will enjoy it regardless.

Dotty Update #3

Progress lately has been pretty slow, but going alright otherwise! We've added in some new enemies and fancy looking particle effects! Dotty's movement has also been tweaked a bit so she feels less heavy and more like she did in the Gameboy demo.

@catskets recently held a 72 hour Murderboy Mayhem game jam. I was not able to complete the game in time, but I still finished and published it, so here it is. ^^

Plot: You wake up and find yourself on a romantic dinner date with a mysterious man, who introduces himself as Zecharias. You have no memory of ever meeting this man, or agreeing to go on a date with him. You have to figure out what's going on before it's too late.

This game acts as a spinoff for my other games: Let Me Remind You and Be My Muse. It features the same yandere love interest as both games: Zecharias, but takes place at a different time.

This is my first completed game. :D I'm so happy I finished it.

WIP Wednesday, now with a fun new banner. Thanks to @kiwiana-writes for the tag and thanks to everyone who has tagged me in various tag games over the last week or so. Here is some more from the sci-fi actors au that I've been working on. (For context, Alex’s character is named Dev Creehil, Henry’s character is named Qindeli, and the ship name created by fans for the two characters is qindev.)

“What do you think of the script?” Alex asks, unable to handle the silence of the room any longer. “I think it’s incredible,” Henry responds, not looking up. “Though, Rafael’s scripts always are. And I think the fans will really love it, too.” Henry’s voice is even and unaffected, as if he’s chatting with a stranger about the weather. Alex watches him, the way he’s just sitting there all nonchalant as if he hadn’t been a total asshole to Alex the night before. “Do you ever wonder where the ship name qindev came from?” Alex asks, leaning his elbows onto the table. “Because I feel like it should be the other way around: devqin. Dev is smarter, more resourceful, more interesting, better looking. Just kind of better in every conceivable way.” Henry takes a sip of his tea and then places the cup back down on the table before turning a page. “Historically the character who is more dominant in the bedroom has their name come first,” he says as if it’s not a completely insane thing to say. Alex wants to pick up his stupid cup of tea and throw it across the room.

I absolutely LOVE how they reworked the Stranger’s route and design! It’s so much better than anything we saw in the demo! The themes of that chapter cohere so beautifully, and the Princess’ final design is so wonderfully nightmarish that I infinitely prefer it to even the first Stranger design. Abby and Tony really outdid themselves here, I can tell Nichole had a lot of fun doing the voicework for this chapter, and kudos to the sound mixer who handled Johnny’s lines for the part where everything starts happening all at once!
