do u have any thoughts on the whole “tim is zapped to time prison” storyline? bc i feel like it could have been pretty interesting and a good way to bring back young justice/tim’s memories more immediately if it hadn’t been such a blatant attempt to just get tim out of storylines bc they had no ideas for his character

sorry lol u don’t have to respond i just kind of wish people talked about this storyline more? and the fact that tim lowkey became one of the only people in dc with knowledge of the other timelines (i think so at least) and nobody really addressed it?? like going into the next phase where people learn about other timelines after death metal.... tim should already know some of this stuff right?

YES YES YES OKAY LETS TALK ABOUT THIS this got incredibly long because I just have a lot to say (and i included screenshots) and i prob got a little off topic but. but lets get started anyways:

i haven’t read that particular storyline in a few months so i might be missing/misremembering some details here, but that whole ‘time prison + future tim’ thing was like. a really really interesting concept and the implications/impacts it has are a big part of why i liked tynion’s detective comics run as much as i did even with it’s flaws in characterization (such as treating tim like he was jimmy neutron boy genius and making steph..... be all ready to quit/breakaway from the team like that. the steph quitting characterization really started i think in batgirl convergence and unfortunately has haunted her since, even though pre reboot never giving up was like...... one of her defining traits. dc i hate you sometimes)

i think that one of the biggest things that bothers me about the situation is how little we saw most of the other characters in the batfamily grieve (aside from steph and some with bruce, but again the way steph was portrayed just... hhhhhh. it very much reduced her to ‘tims girlfriend’ more than i’d have preferred) but otherwise like...as far as I can remember there was maybe one line in that monsters crossover thing where dick mentioned tim was gone, jason had a single line about avoiding the funeral in rhato, i dont think they showed any reaction from babs at all until after he was back, and the most for damian I recall is at the end of the 2014 teen titans run (#24) where he looks at... a case with the old red robin uniform Tim wasn’t even wearing anymore when he died? and that just bugs me. Instead of getting to see the actual funeral we get one flashback to it way after the fact once Bruce already knows Tim’s not actually dead

But at the time when they all DID think he was dead? the closest thing we see was in that same teen titans issue (#24) there’s a memorial-type ‘sharing stories’ thing after the funeral with tim’s titans friends but.... we don’t see something like that with his family. tim is a major presence in these peoples’ lives, they are his family, when he gets sent into time prison its even SAID how loved he apparently is

its just... idk. they all thought he was dead, and if they had put more emphasis on showing not just telling how that effected EVERYONE (not just steph) in the batfam, it might have felt a lot less like they were just putting tim away until there was a story idea for him. (like obviously I know they can’t make everyone’s stories revolve around Tim, but I’d have way preferred a detective comics issue of the funeral/memorial with the family than having there only be a teen titans one, I think it would have... held more relevance & meaning... but instead they just went right into that monster crossover story instead of lingering on this)

but then the Tim story itself once it does pick up way later, with titans tomorrow/future tim coming along having that whole “tell conner you’re sorry” “who’s conner?” exchange with current tim... that opens up A LOT of things to think about, and I think was pretty interestingly done if i’m remembering correctly. future tim recognizes the timelines are different, and ya know goes off to try to change things further ("whaddaya got there?” “a gun to kill batwoman” “NO!!!!”), theres lots of fighting etc etc the good guys win as we expect, but once that’s all settled tim’s left there with this whole. thought process

which ya know is the big indicator there’s weird timeline/reality fuckery going on (or also the read here can be that tim and kon are so connected across all space and time that their bond can transcend anything even timelines and realities and reboots... “and they were soulmates” “oh my god they were soulmates”)

ANYWAYS lets not forget that tim isnt the only one who learns about this other timeline stuff during this whole situation!

Brother Eye has records of future tim’s timeline, and cass & steph see who they used to be! and as soon as steph finds out ‘holy shit i was ROBIN and BATGIRL?’ she also desperately wants to know more! which then a bit later leads into young justice 2019 where instead of going off to college like they told Bruce they were gonna, Steph and Tim go get the help of Zatanna to see what might be going on in their brains with these timelines and weird feelings (as we see in flashback form in yj 2019 #5)

and HOO BOY DOES SHE FIND THINGS! she gets in there and finds out that oh yeah, their brains had very much so been tampered with, and with her magic she undoes some of it, by unlocking memories, and Tim finally remembers Conner! (also in case u were wondering, that panel is specifically a callback to this one from yj 1998 #17 when Cissie quit the team)

one thing that I think is weird/interesting/idk if it gets... properly addressed even, was that Zatanna also poked around Steph’s brain too and she didn’t remember everything? Might have something to do even with how Tim had been in time prison, might have taken less work from Z to open things up because of that? Who knows

additionally i wanna call attention to how he said “That entire chapter of my life” which... leading into my next point a bit... strongly leads me to believe even though he’s remembering some things he definitely does not have ALL of his memories back (because theres a lot more than just the young justice ‘chapter’ of tim’s life that was drastically changed by the new 52 & rebirth)

BUT moving on, i wanna bring up this part from later on (after they figured out that there was a crisis that caused things in the world to change, which is why their memories/brains were messed with) in issue #16

so yeah, I think it’s indicated even though Zatanna brought back some memories and opened up his brain a bit, there’s still many holes, and some things seem more like dreams rather than memories and he’s probably unable to tell which are which on his own to some extent. (also for reference the real thing that Tim thought was just a dream is... likely yj 1998 issue #1)

So based on the things i’ve brought up here (which are the things I remember off the top of my head, I could easily be accidentally leaving shit out LMAO i haven’t fully read through any of these books in at least 3 or more months now) I think it’s safe to assume that Tim definitely has a head start on getting back his memories before Death Metal happens, but that it was by no means a complete thing. So the after effects of Death Metal are probably just gonna... be a little less drastic for him vs most other people because it was already happening, but it’ll be kinda filling in the remaining gaps?

And like you said he is absolutely one of the few people that already knew about about the timelines/the fact that these crises have happened and changed things, but pretty much all the other young justice characters are also aware that there was meddling in the timeline/that multiple timelines and alternate universes like this exist since they were all together as a group when it got explained (in like. yj 2019 #15 i believe is where most of the explaining happens) (and cass as well is aware of things to some extent because of her and steph’s interaction with Brother Eye) but the difference is that Zatanna didn’t go into everyone’s brains, so they aren’t dealing with the same memory things as Tim (and possibly Steph? because again Z DID go in her brain, she just wasn’t able to unlock all the same things as she did with Tim)

but yeah in general i SO wish this was explored more, both in canon and in fanworks (fanworks tho... that can still happen >:3c). Memories hazily coming in for Tim while Kon and Bart are able to confirm or deny things, him dealing with conflicting memories and feelings about his past as they trickle in... like I think we’ll start to see these types of things moving forward across a lot of titles with Infinite Frontier (i BELIEVE dont quote me on this but I BELIEVE the person writing Damian’s upcoming solo had mentioned in an interview that the memories coming back of the other timeline aren’t going to be an all at once thing but will be more gradual for most characters) but the fact that it theoretically had already been happening for Tim for MONTHS and we only got that one crumb indicating it in #16 of it instead of any actual exploration makes me SAAAAAAD

1-Knitting

“Where’s Red Hood?” Nightwing asked as he landed on the roof of the building and looked over at the rest of the batfam.

“He’s not coming.” Batman said as he crossed his arms and looked at Nightwing,

“You’re late by the way.”

“I know. I ran into some guys robbing a gas station.”

“Hn”

“Good talk B.” Nightwing chuckled and walked towards his brothers.

“Good afternoon baby birdies.”

“Hey, Dick.

“Do you know where Jason is?”

“He said he was taking the night off and that Bruce can fuck off.”

“That gives me an idea!” Nightwing beamed at his siblings and then ran over to Bruce,

“Hey! B! If Red Hood can take the night off then we should go visit him!”

“No.”

“Come on Bruce. You know how Jason gets when he’s alone.” Tim said as he leaned on his bo staff,

“No. We have patrol.”

“Father. We should go see Todd.”

“Yeah B!” Stephanie said as she bounced up and down. Cass smiled and stood silently behind Steph. Bruce looked at each of his kids and sighed. He knew when he was outnumbered and when he lost. Because when it comes to his kids he really couldn’t tell them no. So away they went to Jason’s apartment. Somehow halfway there Dick and Steph turned it into a race, Dick won of course.

“Soooo front door or window?”

“The front door is for normal people.” Dick said with a smile.

“Window it is.” Tim said as he pried the window to Jason’s apartment.

“....Do you hear music?”

“Jason’s listening to music.”

The family slowly crept into the apartment. Only one light was on and that was to the living room. They walked towards the living room and they each froze. Jason was sitting in a rocking chair humming along to the soft music that was playing through the radio with knitting needles. Was he knitting a sweater, oh my god he was. Dick put his hand on the wall but ended up knocking something off the wall. Jason jumped off of the rocking chair and looked behind him. Damian and Tim both covered their mouths to not laugh. Jason was wearing a fluffy pink sweater with a cartoonish red bat.

Jason’s face turned a very bright red,

“WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE!”

“We came to visit you. Oh my god, you’re adorable in that!”

“Please stop.” Jason sighed and looked away. Stephanie squealed as she grabbed something out of a basket.

“It has my name on it!” Jason looked over to Stephanie and sighed.

“I made it for you. I uh..made everyone something.” As soon as those words left his mouth Steph grabbed the basket and dumped everything on the floor,

“Oh come on Steph!” She gave everyone whatever had their names on it. Dick had a pair of black and blue gloves, Damian had a green scarf that had the Wayne family crest, Tim had a red and black hat, Cass had a hat with tiny bat ears.

“Aww, Jay! Where did you learn how to knit anyway?”

“When I was in France with the league I met an old woman who didn’t have any family willing to visit her. So I stayed with her when I was able too. We talked and she should me how to knit. She said I was the best grandson she knew. She uh..died shortly after. So whenever I’m missing her I knit.”

“I’m sorry Jason.”

“Jaylad…”

“I-It’s ok. I swear it is.” He was tackled by all of his family in a giant hug.

“Guys...can’t...breath..” They let go of him slowly.

“So. Got any stories about the lady?”

“Cecile Bisset. She was the sweetest old lady.” That whole night was full of Jason telling stories about Cecile and knitting a sweater. Once the sweater was done he handed it to Bruce.

“There you are.” Bruce stared at the sweater and smiled. It was black with pink cuffs and had “Best Bat Dad” on it.

“Happy early father’s day.”Bruce sat the sweater to the side and hugged Jason.

“I love you son.”

“Love you too dad.”

2-Horse Back riding

“Soo. Jason ran off.” Bruce sighed loudly as he turned the chair to look at his kids.

“Why?” Dick shrugged at Bruce’s response.

“I don’t know. He said he needed to leave Gotham for a bit.” Bruce sighed again and grabbed his phone. He went into his contacts and called Clark.

“Clark. Is Jason either over at your place or coming over?.... We’ll come by in about an hour.” Bruce sat his phone on the batcomputers desk.

“He’s at Clark’s?” Tim asked as he sat down in his swivel office chair and spun himself around

“He’s at the Kent’s place in Smallville.” Tim stopped spinning in the chair and looked at Bruce,

“Why’s he at the Kent’s?”

“I don’t know. But we are going to go see.”

“Cool. Let’s follow the Red Hood and see what he does on the weekend.” Damian said as he looked over at Stephanie who was standing on the t-rex’s head as she played with the stuffed knitted bear that Jason made for her.

“He knits on the weekends Dami!” She said with a smile.

“Steph get off the t-rex.”

“Sure B.”

“So...shall we go get our wayward birdy?” Dick smiled as he looked around at his family, Tim sighed loudly and got off his chair.

“Fine.” Dick rolled his eyes while Bruce tried not to smack his face with his palm.

It took them twenty minutes to get on the road and towards Smallville. Bruce really needed to talk to Jason about running off without telling them. They worry about Jason, they’re scared he’ll get hurt while they aren’t there with him. When they reach the Kent’s farm, Clark was waiting for them outside the farmhouse. He smiled at the Wayne’s.

“Hey, guys! How was the drive over?”

“Where’s Jason?” Bruce ignored the question, he only wanted to see his son. Clark smiled,

“He’s in the back with Ma and Pa. Come on.” He seemed eager to show them something. And when they got to the back they realized why. Jason was riding in a circle with a beautiful black horse. They could see a bright smile on his face. Ma Kent walked over to them and offered them some lemonade.

“Good to see you boys again.” She smiled at them.

“I didn’t know Jason could ride horses.”

“He’s really good at it. Cause he can’t really take the horses to Gotham he keeps them here. Thanks, Ma.” Clark said as he took a glass of lemonade from his mom. Jason noticed them and smiled at them, he pulled on the horse’s reins making the horse stop. He got off the horse and handed the reins to Pa Kent who gladly took it. Jason walked over to them and crossed his arms with a playful smile.

“What’s going on guys?”

“You can ride horses too?”

“Yep.”

“Let me guess, someone taught you when you were traveling?”

“Oh yeah. I stayed with a nice family in Mongolia. They taught me how to ride horses. They also showed me how to shear sheep.”

“Jesus Jason. Anything else you can do that we don’t know?”

“Eh probably. But I’ll let you figure it out later.” Jason said as he put his hands in his pocket. Damian was staring at the horse with wide eyes,

“What’s his name?”

“Shade.”

“I love him.”

“I know you do Dami.”

“Father-”

“No Damian.”

“TT.”

The Waynes joined the Kent’s for dinner that night, when they finished dinner the Waynes headed to the car.

“How did you get here Jay?” Tim asked as he opened the car door.

“My bike.”

“You wanna come with us? It’s late.”

“I’ll be fine dad. I’ll see you guys at the manor?” Bruce nodded

“Oh yeah. We still gotta do movie tonight.”

“Damn. I forgot about that.”

3-Hair Braiding

“Ow! Dick be careful!” Stephanie winced as Dick pulled her hair.

“Sorry, Steph! I’m not really good at braiding.”

“You don’t say.”

Jason watched them from the doorway fixing his tie.

“Move out of the way Dickie.” Jason all but pushed Dick away from Steph,

“What are you doing Jay?” Stephanie asked Jason as he gathered the middle of her hair,

“Your hair has bee brushed right?”

“Of course.”

“Good.” Jason split the hair into three sections and crossed the right section under the middle one. He took a thin section of her hair and added it to the right section before crossing it under the middle one. He did the same thing with the left side and kept doing it until he reached the nape of Steph’s neck, when he got to her nape he did a standard braid and loosened the outer strands of the braid to make it seem fuller.

“There.” Jason took a step back and looked at his work with a proud smile.

“Oh my god! I love it!” Steph squealed happily as she turned and wrapped her arms around Jason in a hug.

“Let me guess...traveling?” Dick said with a smirk. Jason laughed

“Oh yeah. I stayed with a woman in the Netherlands who really liked to braid hair, she should me how to do it.”

“Thank you so much, Jay!”

“I’m glad you do Steph. I gotta finish getting ready for the Gala.” He turned around and walked out of the room leaving Steph and Dick to talk about her hairstyle.

4-Makeup

Jason headed to his room after he left Steph and Dick when he overheard Tim and Cass,

“I’m sorry Cass, I’m not really good at makeup that’s not...cover up.” Jason looked in Cass’s room. Cass was sitting in front of her vanity mirror while Tim was brushing her hair. Cass pouted a bit.

“Need help with some make-up Cassy?” Tim and Cass looked over at Jason,

“Yes.”

“What look were you hoping for?” She pointed to a picture in a magazine. Red and yellow mixed eyeshadow, butterfly looking hairclips, and matte pink lipstick. Jason nodded and got to work. He blended the red and yellow eyeshadow in the middle to make it orange, he used eyeliner and mascara. Once he finished her eye makeup he put her matte pink lipstick,

“And you’re done.” Cass smiled at the reflection and then hugged Jason,

“Thank you.”

“No problem Cassy.”

“I’m not even gonna ask where you picked that up.”

“Believe it or not. Talia showed me how to do makeup.”

“I don’t believe it.” Tim said as he grabbed his suit jacket off of Cass’s dresser,

“So, you ready for the Gala Jay?”

“I guess.” With that, the three siblings walked downstairs to meet their dad for the Gala.

5-Belly Dancing

Dick really never expected to find Jason in the dance studio as an instructor. A Belly Dancing instructor. Dick, Cass, Steph, Tim, and Damian watched from the class door watching as Jason told the class what they were going to do.

“Firstly we are going to make a big outer hip circle.” He said as he moved his hips in a big circle,

“Our pelvic region is gonna stay in neutral, as we push and shift our weight from toes, heels, and the edges of our feet. As you can see I’m pushing my hips in a nice big counter-clockwise circle and making sure I keep it all equal. How far I go forward is how far I go backward. It probably won’t come naturally to any of you, but why not give it a try.” Jason watched the class as they tried to copy Jason.

“Heather, don’t sway your hips like that. Keep it natural not club dancing. Good job Keira. A tip is to try and keep your pant line even with the floor. Don’t tip a hip up. Keep your spine straight guys. Don’t bend and don’t go so big you lose your balance.” He said as he kept making his hips go in a circle.

“....I think we should leave Jason to his class.”

“...I’m having him teach me this.”

“Dick no.”

“Dick yes.” Tim grabbed Dicks’s ear and the siblings walked out of the dance studio and away from Jason. Tim needed bleach in his eyes to get rid of the image of Jason moving his hips like that. It was not something he ever wanted to see. From Damian’s reaction, he agrees with Tim.

+1-The family surprises him

Jason yawned as he made his way up to the main door to the manor, he didn’t bother to knock. He just pushed opened the door, he took one step in and saw his family all trying to belly dance.

“What in the..”

“Ah, Master Jason. Would you like some tea?” Alfred walked up to him with a tray of tea

“W..what’s going on?” Jason asked as he looked in horror as Bruce tried to sway his hips,

“It seems Master Dick wanted the family night to be used to learn Belly Dancing.”

“...Can I go to the kitchen...I don’t need to see Bruce swaying his hips anymore…”

“Of course.” Jason walked into the kitchen, for the second time that night he froze. Talia and Selina were sitting at the table drinking coffee and talking. Like friends.

“He came from nowhere and said ‘I’m Batman.’ Like it was supposed to mean something to me at the time.” Selina said as she took a sip of her coffee. Talia laughed and looked over at Jason.

“Habibi, come sit with us.” Jason smiled and walked over to the table and sat with the two women.

“So, we’re talking shit about Bruce?”

“Of course we are.”

“I’m stealing you,” a voice announces over his shoulder. It’s a voice he recognizes, one that belongs to Stephanie. Bruce turns around, totally unconcerned about the people he’d just been talking to. Sure enough, Steph is standing there, dressed up more than he’d ever seen before. Her dress is purple, a more subdued shade than her old costume. There aren’t any shoulders, but long sleeves cover her arms, and a built-in belt sits high on her waist, just under where the neckline dips. There’s a slit for her leg in the flowing fabric, which brushes the ground.

He recalls that when the children were discussing what they’d be wearing to this event, Damian mentioned how low the temperature can get in an effort to not overheat everyone. She and Dick had commiserated about fashion and how sometimes looking fabulous is worth freezing to death.

Hmm. He’ll have to watch out and make sure she doesn’t get too cold.

Stephanie looks behind him for a moment, eyes falsely wide. She plays the naive debutante role very well. “This isn’t important, right?”

“No, not really,” Bruce says, even though it kind of is. One of the people he’d been speaking with scoffs, but he ignores them and steps towards her. She usually doesn’t interact with him unless she wants or needs something—clearly his attention needs to be aimed at her right now. These society people and their business can wait. “What’s up?”

“Let’s dance.” She doesn’t wait for a response, just grabs Bruce’s wrist and tugs him out onto the dance floor. It’s been set up between the tables, but there are less people dancing than ones standing around the edges of it, talking and sipping at champagne. There’s a band on a small stage playing classical songs that are always played at these stupid galas, and luckily, they’re beginning a new song just as Bruce and Stephanie reach the floor.

It’s like dancing with Cass—they assume the position for a waltz, a few inches of space between their bodies. She’s taller than his daughter, and while it doesn’t quite put him on the wrong foot, it does make their dance feel unfamiliar. Thankfully, her presence in his life has been increasing over the past year, enough that it’s not uncomfortable. Thankfully, he thinks with what can only be described as fond exasperation. When did that happen?

“So,” Steph says once they’re moving around the dance floor. People are staring. Everyone wants to know who the new kid with the Waynes is. He’ll have to have Damian make a post on social media about her to clear up her relationship to the family. “This is a gala.”

But what is her relationship? he wonders. She’s not quite just a family friend anymore. But he’s not her dad. Not really. Her mom is alive and well, occasionally contacting him with concerns and questions. Boundaries with Steph and her mom and himself are very firmly set—boundaries with Steph and the kids are not. Dick is already big-brothering her. “Yes.”

“My first.”

“I’m aware.” She must be feeling nervous, he surmises. Her eyes are flitting every which way. Though, why she’s coming to him and not Cass, he’s unsure.

“It’s…not like what I expected it to be. I’ve always heard Tim complain about them, but I don’t know, it’s not as terrible as he made them out to be? But on the other hand, I haven’t talked to many people yet. They’re probably all judging me, aren’t they. Ugh.” She rolls her eyes. “Hey, what rich person insult will piss them off the most?”

“You’d be better off asking Duke that,” Bruce says. Or Jason. But Steph and Jason haven’t, as far as he knows, bonded much. Met a few times, yes. Talked shit about him for several hours one night, yes. But bonded over anything but that? No. He isn’t sure they’ll get along if the conversation is about something else, even with their similar backgrounds.

“I just figured since you’re, ya know, a rich asshole, you’d know which one is best. If I heavily imply I think they’re overcompensating with their big houses and cars and shit, will someone actually turn red with rage? Because seriously, I would love to see that.”

Bruce takes a moment to consider it, eyes sweeping over the other people in the room. He skips over his children, focusing more on the insecure men and women that Steph could easily take down a notch. Not wanting to be overheard by the others on the dance floor, he tells her in an undertone which ones are the best targets.

She listens attentively, a grin widening on her face with every new name. When he’s done, she says, “Thanks! I’m gonna need those in writing, though. Don’t wanna forget.”

Unsure if she’s joking or not, he leads them into a turn. “Just remind me after we’re done here and I’ll get you a more complete list.”

“Cool.” They dance for a few more moments in silence, both of them noticing how close some of the other dancers are getting. Rather loudly, Steph clears her throat. “They really think they’re being subtle, huh?”

Amused, Bruce glances at the faces around them. Everyone hears her words, and while a few seem undeterred, most pale at being caught, moving away in a very obvious manner. “Curiosity makes the cat brave,” he quips, repeating a sentiment Cass shared with him recently. When she doesn’t respond, he looks down to her face, finding her staring in the direction of the doors they came in through. “Something on your mind?”

He’s really asking, why did you come and get me? If it’s just nerves, she would’ve been better off with one of the others. No, it must be something else.

Steph blinks, turning her gaze upwards. Never one to back down, she meets his eyes long enough for him to see she’s not in any distress, at least. “Just thinking.”

“About?”

“I don’t know,” she mumbles. “Everything. Nothing.”

“Hrn,” he replies, a gentle reminder that he’s listening and she can keep going.

“It’s just—why did you even bring me here, B? I stick out like a sore thumb. It’s so obvious everyone here is judging me and probably think I’m with Tim or something,” she makes a face to show just how unappealing that sounds. And honestly, Bruce has to agree, knowing that the two work much better as friends than partners. “And I don’t even know why I asked if they’re judging me, because I know they are! I heard someone ask if I was another one of your charity cases! They know I don’t belong here. And I know it too, so—”

“Stephanie.”

“—so why ?”

“Because,” he says, lowering his voice as the music stops. He doesn’t want anyone overhearing this. “Because you are a family friend, at the very least. You’ve helped save my children’s lives as well as my own. You deserve to be here with the rest of us. If you want to go home, I’ll happily call Alfred to come and get you, but can I tell you what I think?”

“What?” She asks, sniffling quietly. Her eyes are wet but she’s not crying. To anyone else, her eyes would just look a little shiny, probably from all the twinkling lights.

“I think you’ll have more if you stick around and help me subtly insult all of these assholes.”

A surprised laugh bubbles out of her, and she leans forward, her forehead resting on his chest. He pats her back, letting her calm down without having to worry about people seeing.

Spotting Duke sitting by himself at a nearby table and hoping that’s all that needs to be said, Bruce taps her shoulder and asks, “Why don’t we go sit down and eat, hm?”

Pulling away, Steph exhales loudly and says, “Yeah, okay. As long as I get to actually eat something, I mean. Tim always said the portions are way too small.”

Together, they walk to where Duke is sitting. When he sees them, he grins and stands, meeting them both with hugs. Hugs from Duke are a more common occurrence than from any of the other kids except Dick and Cass.

Bruce makes sure to hold on until Duke is ready to let go, having heard the sentiment from Alfred once and internalizing it. It’s made it easier to handle hugs—though still a little uncomfortable, they’re nice. Really nice.

“Hey kid,” Steph says, slinging her arm over Duke’s shoulders.

Duke leans obnoxiously into her side. “I’m only like 3 years younger than you, you know.”

“Eh, details,” Steph replies. “Anyway, we were gonna eat. You hungry? Wanna join us?”

“Hell yeah,” he says, grinning. “I wasn’t sure how to get something to eat, so I was like, just sitting around hoping someone would come and help me.”

“Your pouting was very potent,” Steph tells him. “I think Bruce saw it and almost combusted with a need to be fatherly and stuff.”

“Here, I’ll show you both,” Bruce says, steering them towards the bar where orders are taken. Duke has been with them for a year now, but they haven’t exactly discussed the father stuff. Other than a few times where Duke has accidentally called him dad—and good god, did that always make Bruce flush with happiness and pride—the only thing Bruce knows for sure is that Duke misses his real parents and still occasionally looks for them.

Standing between them, he can’t help but notice the looks people are giving all three of them. This event was supposed to be a more casual one, hence the bar, but the people Bruce is forced to invite are some of the worst and most judgmental assholes he’s ever met. They’re used to Duke by now, but Duke plus Steph is clearly too much for them. He glares back, trying to seem stoic and protective rather than pissed off.

They look away. Good.

The kids chat as they walk, and chat some more once they have their meals and are seated at a table near where Cass and Dick are dancing. Damian spots them and immediately makes a beeline to the empty chair, stopping long enough to set down his drink before going to get something to eat for himself.

Bruce takes a sip of his drink, eyeing Stephanie. She seems calmer now that she’s not alone, but he’ll have to keep checking on her. The night is going to wear long, he can already tell, and he doesn’t want her to keep feeling so out of place, so judged.

He joins in on the conversation, which has somehow turned to Pokemon, and for a while, he and three of his kids—or whatever Steph is to him—just talk and eat. It’s surprisingly relaxing, considering where they are.

Eventually, though, it comes to an end. Dick and Cass come by, Dick only sticking around long enough to steal something off Bruce’s plate before he goes to find Tim. Cass, however, holds out her hand to Steph, who gleefully takes it. Before leaving, she turns to Bruce and sticks out a closed fist. “You’re cool sometimes, I guess.”

Pretending to be exasperated, he fist bumps her. “Thank you. Now go have fun, hm?”

She hesitates for a moment. Then, “Hell yeah,” and his girls are gone, grinning happily and dancing.

lets start w jason

A (realistic headcanon):

ok using the ‘realistic’ category here loosely but GOD i love the idea of Damian & Jason having interacted while Jason was staying with the League before getting dunked in the Lazarus Pit. like. this obviously would need to be set more in preboot and following the Lost Days & Batman Annual 25 version of Jason’s resurrection, but god the idea of it just makes me scream in a good way. Like... these are things Jason likely doesn’t remember very clearly once he’s brought back to life more fully by the pit because he was uh pretty catatonic, but Damian being a little kid and knowing about the boy that his mother keeps around the base, that she’s trying to help bring back to health. Damian not even knowing that’s his big brother, just that he’s a presence that shares his mother’s attention. Jason again being unresponsive but like, ok god you know that part of lost days where Talia shows the others observing him that he only fights back at those he perceives as genuine threats trying to hurt him,

Because Jason can perceive that she’s safe, she’s not actually trying to hurt him, he trusts her because she saved him? thinking about lil child Damian who is ya know already being trained in fighting stuff and like the idea of him trying to provoke Jason just to see what happens but Jason not fighting back because on some level be it his connection to Talia or even little baby Damian visually reminding him of Bruce, he knows that Damian is safe too 🥺

and then when Jason and Damian meet again in Gotham as Red Hood & Robin respectively, Jason not really remembering because there was so much going on back then for him, but Damian realizing that oh... that was Him

B (hilarious):

alright so if we are looking at comics currently, in modern stuff jason is what, like 22? hes old enough to drink in the US but still definitely early 20s so around my around my age, thats what im using as a basis here. if we adjust timeline and still consider his death having happened when he was 15, that puts it around 2013. and then coming back to like interacting with people about three years later if we still kinda base things off of the preboot timeframe (since we never got a super solid retelling of the timeline of death -> resurrection -> training -> tries to get revenge aside from knowing he went to the all-caste instead of the lost days version of the story) making him reenter the regular world and stuff around age 18 in 2016. meaning a solid three years of pop culture that he was entirely missing, and like im sorry but he really doesn’t strike me as the type to bother looking into what he missed, he’s kinda busy focusing on other stuff. lets take a quick look at some major things from those years. 2013 gave us ‘what does the fox say’ and ‘the harlem shake’ . 2014 had that time U2 just put a fuckin album on everyone’s phones, The Fault In Our Stars movie came out. 2015 introduced the phrase ‘Netflix and Chill’ and the whole blue & black vs gold & white dress debate happened. imagine any of the other batkids (or even arguably roy during rhato stuff) bringing these things up and jason’s ensuing confusion. thank you for your time

C (heart-crushing):

so. there are two specific instances from rebirth era Jason i want to bring up here and much like a lot of these it’s less a headcanon and more of an inference based on observations, but i wanna take a sec to discuss Jason’s relationship with other people’s death. early in rebirth, Tim ‘dies’ from that whole thing in detective comics. he didn’t actually die, we as readers know, but in-universe they all very much so thought he was dead. frustratingly a lot of the batfam wasn’t really shown mourning him aside from in the Detective Comics Rebirth title itself (which just. when a major character dies even if its temporary- that should have a ripple effect) BUT an exception to that is in RHATO 2016, where we get this offhanded comment in Jason’s internal monologuing

similarly later when Roy, who like, had an incredibly close relationship w Jason that had just gotten mended before Heroes in Crisis, gets fuckin murdered in that whole thing... Jason doesn’t go to his funeral either. He leaves a dramatic voice mail and then visits the grave on his own later, choosing to instead keep working on the mission they’d started rather than going and taking the time to mourn properly.

Jason’s relationship with death is incredibly complicated, obviously. He has died, he has come back, and he now is willing to cross the line most other bats won’t and will kill people when he deems it necessary. I think thats something important though- he doesn’t just like... go around killing for fun (usually, some writers preboot made him a little murder happy but even then usually this still was vaguely followed) he kills people he thinks deserved it. Like, even looking back at the mess of Morrison’s Jason during Batman & Robin 2009, Jason was still trying to bring a sense of justice with who he was killing (”punishment that fits the crime”), it wasn’t killing for the sake of killing. He sees things in this kind of almost black and white ‘people who deserve it’ and ‘people who don’t’ way, and he has no problem dealing with death when it’s with the people he thinks deserve it.

but when someone who doesn’t in his mind ‘deserve it’ gets killed? i think he just goes into total avoidance mode. throws himself into other things he’s doing, tries not to dwell on it too much no matter how much he still thinks about it (this is especially evident in him consistently telling people “i’m fine!” after what happened to Roy, despite bringing Roy up literally like every few issues for a WHILE after he died and very clearly still struggling with it, Artemis is the only one who gets through to him on it a little bit)

but yeah, I just think that from Jason’s relatively unique situation of having been murdered, he knows what it’s like and he is perfectly fine wishing that on people he thinks are bad and deserve it, but it crushes him to imagine the people he loves and cares about having to experience something as painful as what he went through. not to mention the whole “I came back, why do I get a second chance at all this when they, who are a much better person than I am, probably won’t” mindset we get some implications of him having

D (canon is a coward and won’t)

CASS TIME

A (realistic headcanon):

ok so we know cass likes ballet. thats canon. however i think we also should in general explore cass experiencing other types of dance/performance as well, be it herself as a performer or even just watching. like... god imagine her & like my brain just automatically for group activities puts her with tim steph and duke but also for this in particular I feel would be a Jason embraced activity, but like them going to see a broadway show or some other professional theatre or something, and her just being enthralled by the reading of body language of the performers! like again by any point in current stuff cass does have like, the ability to speak fine (reading still hard tho) but even so I think like. okay im a theatre kid if that’s not obvious from the Everything About Me but one thing I always do after seeing a show is ya know spend dinner afterwards discussing it with whoever i saw it with.

I just think that like, bringing those people i just mentioned to the table to discuss seeing a show after would be so FASCINATING because cass would bring this whole perspective of critiquing their acting on a whole different level- not based on how well they delivered lines out loud, but by what their body language was saying as they moved on stage. like im very amused by the idea of cass getting a totally different picture in her mind about what a character’s motivations were because she was paying way more attention to what their physicality was saying vs the words that were written and how they were delivered. i think the debates her and the others would have would be EPIC there. jason defending the text as it was written adamantly and cass being like ‘ok yeah sure but thats not what they did’

B (hilarious):

cass having no concept of money because why would she bother? is SO funny to me. like it’s not that she couldn’t be reasonable if she wanted to, but like, she knows that the Waynes are well off so it’s not something she actually needs to be concerned about, so she just goes hog wild. takes steph out to fancy dinners and makes steph order for them since cass ya know doesn’t really read the menus, and steph’s like ‘jesus christ this costs-” “don’t worry about it” “but cass-” and she just holds up one of bruce’s credit cards and steph’s still like “but you don’t even know the range-” “it is fine”

bruce does not have the heart to tell her to stop

C (heart-crushing):

i mean this is pretty much canon but especially now after death metal where she’s remembering, not just being told by a guy using weird alternate timeline technology, that she used to be an adopted member of the Wayne family... like that hurts so bad. To look at these people who have ya know been kind to her, Bruce has still been a father-like figure to her (i mean literally from the moment they met in New 52 canon during the flashback in Batman & Robin Eternal, where he’s telling her that she’s not a monster just because of what people forced her to do.... that she’s a hero... that hug.... dad behavior), and they do to some extent treat her as family... But to then really know, to feel and remember that she was actually adopted! She was a part of their family. To look at how she’s been calling herself Orphan while working with them this whole time... that’s so heartbreaking! I have cried about this idea so much! I want so badly a conversation between her and Bruce now where he offers to officially adopt her again, I need it so bad and if it doesn’t happen at some point in the next year or two I will be so distraught.

D (canon is a coward and won’t)

i want an in-depth exploration of cass’ relationship to her own gender. being raised without language and you know with so much of her life being independent (remember: CASS RAN AWAY AROUND THE WORLD WITHOUT REALLY KNOWING ANY SPOKEN LANGUAGE) and outside of an organized society impressing too much of gender expectations on her, i feel like the way she experiences it would be very unique! like sure she’s so far been fine with being assigned ‘girl’ (ya know that comes with batgirl, and how people just automatically treated her based on how she looks) but in terms of gender expression and like her actual relationship with ‘traditional femininity’ etc like... because of how she was raised I just think she’d have a really different perspective on it that could be cool to explore, and I think she’d fall outside of the binary after she really thinks about how she identifies.

tldr on that: she/they nb cass is what i’m getting at here
