This enormous bird is a Goliath heron, the world's largest living heron. They can grow up to five feet in height, with a wingspan of more than seven feet.
This bird was crouched in some weeds when our guide pointed it out, but when it climbed up the stream bank and stood up straight, it was just incredibly tall for a bird.
Masai Mara, Kenya, July 2023.

Goliath heron in Kruger National Park, South Africa
You are looking at the largest living heron in the world, the goliath heron, waiting for prey to swim by in Kruger National Park, South Africa. This wading bird belongs to the Ardeidae family and is often referred to as the giant heron due to its enormous size, reaching up to 1.5 metres in height and sporting a 2.1-metre wingspan. The goliath heron is a solitary creature, renowned for its exceptionally slow hunting style movements and preference for aquatic habitats such as lakes and swamps. They forage in deep waters and feast on large fish like mullet and tilapia. They also consume smaller animals including frogs, snakes and lizards. These non-migratory birds are found commonly in sub-Saharan Africa, and sparsely in western and southern regions of Asia.

Creature Awaits #189
Each week I plan to feature an amazing creature, admiring God's fantastic artistry. Hopefully it’ll brighten someone’s day to see something new and interesting if they haven’t seen it before. : )
Happy New Year! The Greeks were thought to have based the mythological Phoenix on the now extinct Bennu Heron (Ardea bennuides), so to kick off 2023, it feels fitting to feature a variety of gorgeous "living phoenixes" - extant herons from around the world. - 💕

The Goliath heron
Scientific Name: Ardea goliath
Region: Around lakes, wetlands and swamps throughout central Africa
Size: About 3'11"-5' (~1.20m-1.52m) tall, with a roughly 6'1"-7'7" (~1.85m-2.30m) wingspan
Interesting Notes: Since the extinction of the aforementioned Bennu heron, the Goliath heron has remained the largest living heron in the world. Like other herons, it catches fish by "spearing" them with its long bill; however, sometimes the process of sliding the fish off its beak and setting it down so it can pick it up again to eat it takes so long that other birds will swoop in and steal their meal. : /

After @birdmitosis mentioned seeing a picture of a Goliath Heron fighting a Bald Eagle, I had too look it up.
This is honestly just the Smitten(Eagle) and the Cold(Heron) having on sight beef.
I already made my version of the Cold have the Goliath Heron as their inspiration. I HAVE to make the Smitten a Bald Eagle now.
