hi!!!! there been news articles saying that the working conditions of spiderverse were rlly rlly bad to the point of 100 ppl quitting or someting…. sorry to be liek an annoying reporter and b kinda invasive but is this tru D:

there are some aspects about the article that i don't feel comfortable commenting on, but yes a lot of animators did quit. a lot of it had to do with the issues mentioned in the article, but a lot also left because disney opened a studio in vancouver (where sony imageworks is located) and had to hire an entire crew. i don't blame people for leaving spiderverse to get in on being a part of establishing the disney vancouver studio

i will also say that some of the information going around is incorrect; we did not work 11 hours a day, 7 days a week for over a year. working 7 days a week is illegal, and though some people worked sundays, they were clearly told that they could not work the next saturday if they worked a sunday. we encouraged people to not work ghost hours, and OT was always optional (except for saturday work towards the end, but nobody was punished or anything if they couldn't work a saturday). we also get paid for OT. i was on the movie for over a year but we certainly weren't crunching that whole time. like the article said, we were idle for a long time

it was undeniably a hard movie to work on and with such a large crew, everyone had a wide variety of experiences. the anonymous animators in the article aren't wrong, but i will say that there are people that felt differently, or not as strongly as them. it's a complicated issue that doesn't have a simple solution

i just hope this doesn't tarnish your view of the movie. we worked hard on it and everyone's immense celebration of the animation is making all that hard work very worth it!

I really appreciate your Dawn of the Clans rewrite because I've been in the foosteps of Thunder Storm. Not to be the one to dump a lot about my past, but I've acted like the Thunder Storm in my family because of my grandmother, who was a piece of work who my mother continued to try and maintain a relationship with. It was to the detriment of both of us, and reading the "Whatever Clear Sky had that Gray Wing loved, Thunder Storm has never been privy to it" hit home in a way I wish they wrote

Without getting too much into it myself, BIG mood. "Failure to protect" is such an underrepresented thing and it's so complicated. Loving someone who didn't do the right thing, not being able to hate them because you know they did it because they were misguided, or too hopeful, or too forgiving.

I wish that more of these types of dynamics were explored, but in order for that to happen, the writers have to identify that this sort of situation is fucked up. That Gray Wing DID fail Thunder, and that there isn't... this weird, magical "blood bond" you inherently have with shitty biofamily. That those ideas come from somewhere.

They are so close to it sometimes it hurts.

But then you get a big old bucket of icewater with stuff like the Tom Debaucle lmao. ugh. Nope, they cannot even get the literal bellowing wifebeater dynamic right, let alone any other type of abuse.

But hey that's what fic's for, y'know?

To be super honest I kind of……like Elias…ughhh. He’s a complicated man…being….creature? I’m not sure yet. But I’m on 98 now and the interaction w Melanie? I dunno. I like his, I wanna say, stoicism. It’s terrible. I think. Cuz he’s ya know but I dunno. Like I really did not like him when I found out, I’m down w Gertrude, but as more is revealed and his place in it. I just….I vibe w the boss man.

Also, and I mean this seriously, is Martin like a magical creature of hope and positivity?? Cuz he has his moments of terror and despondency(?) (maybe too strong a word) but he’s such a lil trooper. Such a good bean.

I am rooting for the Blackwood bean.

My husband is playing in a Kingdom Hearts TTRPG every Sunday and has very quickly become attached to the Headmaster at a rebuilt Scala ad Caelum named Master Gaia (the daughter of Terra and Aqua in their campaign). 

He and I have headcannoned that she was a little warrior cats kid back in the day, and even visited that world before, so at his request, since I never did get over my warrior cats phase, I designed Warrior Cat Gaia LOL

Also added bonus art of a Warrior Cat version of his player character playing with Gaia’s tail because the little gremlin kid has accidentally adopted her as his mom XD We may or may not be trying to convince his GM to let the party be warrior cats for a couple sessions LOL

Arslan Senki Reread

Me not shutting up about little things again, but Alfarīd is someone who springs into action very quickly, and is the type who if she sees something that needs fixing, she will step up to fix it. We see her in the thick of action helping out multiple times, and this is one of those. She's stepping up, she can't just stand by and watch.

Notice how everyone is shocked, everyone but the ladies-in-waiting. I think they know. I think Tahamenay trusts them enough to tell them, and it seems she had a close relationship with them. She deducted the reward money from Gieve on behalf of her lady-in-waiting who was deceived by him, and it shows she treasures them. I wonder what her feelings were regarding the one that died. Does she mourn her?

A shooting star, and a baby born at dawn. What does it mean? Hell if I know! I have a gut feeling it probably symbolizes something, though.

Estelle's little face!!! She's just a baby. Farangis's smile soft... Also a bby Alfarīd in the back. I like that Farangis acted as a midwife. The Lusitanian women now accept her aid, when before they were willing to throw themselves off a tower, their children included, because they were afraid of what the “heathens” will do to them. Prejudices are falling away, and bonds are being made! Maybe that's what the star and the baby were symbolizing. A miracle that would not have been possible under anyone else.

Panel not included here but I love how Arslan kept tabs on the well-being of the pregnant woman and the coming baby. He didn't have to, they had nothing to do with him, but he cares. He has so much love to give. Someone else in his position is unlikely to care this much. Is it a wonder he's inspired so much loyalty? Gods, I love this kid so much.

Beans.

My partner and I have a running joke with a friend. Every time he goes on holiday we increase the quantity of beans in his flat.

The first time we bought ~30 cans of kidney beans and hid them around the house like some Easter egg hunt thing but with beans.

The Second time we bought ~6kg dried white beans and hid those in various places. Nearly every receptacle that could safely hold beans became the home of beans. My personal favourite was emptying an oat milk carton, very carefully washing and drying it, filling it with beans and then just putting it back among several other cartons.

He went on holiday again a couple of weeks ago. Obviously there is an expectation of bean-based shenanigans. And obviously we have to beat our previous efforts.

Our friend has (had) a mosaic on his wall of the famous Marilyn Monroe Pop-Art by Andy Warhol. He made the mosaic himself. Over the last couple of weeks we have spent hours and hours assembling a frame, drawing up a pattern and gridding out a 70 x 70 frame and gluing an untold amount of beans to it. I have spent over 21 hours gluing beans to a frames.

For the last couple of days I ended up going to bed at 5:00 am because I lost track of time whilst experimenting with which types of glue works best with different beans (I now have *opinions* on this, y’all). The day of our friend’s return we spent the morning and afternoon grouting the piece and wiping it down and wiping it down again and wiping it down again because grout is just like that. In the evening we went to install the mosaic, just a few hours before his return. Here’s a comparison between the original and our clearly superior replication, and the new piece installed in its rightful place.
