So... about the "Ironwood Was Right" thing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I recently saw this resurface a bit, in the context of Ruby's regrets in Volume 9. Basically, taking the fact that she felt like she'd failed as the show saying that yes, actually, she was wrong to go against Ironwood's plan in Volume 7.
I feel like I went into thinking about this trying to debunk it on a logical level. Like, is it actually a good idea to fly off into the sky in one big long stalling measure when your opponent is literally immortal? What's stopping Salem from grabbing all the rest of the relics and then just waiting as many generations as it takes, until the people of Atlas forget why they came up there in the first place and return to Remnant out of curiosity?
The thing is, treating it as an argument about what's the more "rational" choice is missing the point that like. We're talking about a story. We don't know exactly how many people are in Atlas and in Mantle and where they are and how many more trips they'd have to take to finish the evacuation, because details like that would just bog things down.
This is not a trolley problem with x number of people from Mantle on one side and y number of people from Atlas on the other. This is a trolley problem with a wealthy and powerful person on one track, and a disadvantaged person an alternate track, and Ironwood choosing to pull the lever instead of trying to stop the trolley. The point is not "how many." It's not about math. The point is that there is a fundamental difference between dying in the central location while a bunch of Huntresses and Huntsmen do absolutely everything in their power to protect you, and dying abandoned in the mines you used to work while the city built off of your labor flies away to safety.
The question this conflict is asking is about whether or not other people can be sacrifices. Ironwood says yes—team RWBY disagree. That's the actual crux of this argument. Does Ironwood have the right to decide who deserves protection and who isn't worth the risk? Do we get to give up on other people before we've even tried to save them? It's about the idea of certain people being disposable. Mantle's wall isn't important, Amity is. Amity will protect all of Atlas, and that wall will only help the people in Mantle. It implies that their safety is an acceptable sacrifice for the greater good. It treats them as disposable.
There's a reason it was Nora who spoke up and pointed out that it's always Mantle being asked to bear the burden for the greater good. Nora has been a disposable person before. Hell, Cinder has been a disposable person! The way Atlas (through the madame) treated a living person as a resource to be exploited or sacrificed is the entire reason that Cinder is trying to burn the kingdom down. Thematically, Atlas cannot escape the danger she poses by sacrificing more disposable people.
One of the biggest themes of this show is cooperation. It's all about how Salem can only be defeated by working together. But working together is not possible if certain people are taking on all of the risk, all of the sacrifice. Everyone has to be willing to put some skin in the game. Like, imagine trying to do a group project if you knew half of you were guaranteed to get an A no matter what and the other half weren't.
So the idea that Volume 9 is supposed to come back around and say that actually, that plan that would have literally divided a city in half and cut loose the poorer half like fucking ballast, that was the right thing all along and Ruby Rose was wrong to challenge it... that would be an absolute disaster of a thematic statement.
This is not a show about hard military men making hard military choices. It's not going to contrive a situation where cold-blooded calculation determines that the right thing to do is to pull up the ladder. Because outside of weird philosophical experiments about trolleys, the right thing to do usually has more to do with empathy. Compassion. Cooperation. All that gay shit.

Atreus and Angrboda from my post-Ragnarok AU, with an ambience inspired by the medieval Icelandic hymn, “Heyr himna smiður.” Admittedly, they look a bit older than they are in the AU loll so let’s just chalk it up to their Giant genes!
These two are definitely endgame in my story, but they’re also kinda going at a slow pace with their romance, since neither of them are experienced in this field. Not even Mimir’s lessons on how to “woo” have gotten Atreus far, because those customs don’t work with Angrboda (like giving her a flower)! So Atreus had to start all over again with learning how the Giants court each other XDD
For this pose study, I referenced pictures from Shakespeare’s play, Cymbeline, performed in 2007 starring Tom Hiddleston and Jodie McNee.
(Edit: I added in Atreus’ neck tattoo! I can’t believe I forgot to include it T_T)

。・:*:・゚☆ Solar Corps Strike Force!! ☆。・:*:・゚
I couldn't get the idea of this music idol AU out of my head, so I went ahead and commissioned the fabulous yinyang.arts to create an idea of what the girls would look like as a pop idol group! (This is also how I discovered that I inadvertently created the female characters of ShoH in a way that exactly aligned with the Spice Girls... Scary Spice, Posh Spice, Baby Spice, Sporty Spice...)
You could read them as a K-pop girl group or as a rock band, whichever you prefer...
☆♬○♩●♪✧♩ Lavinet ♩✧♪●♩○♬☆
Leader / Main vocalist / Bassist
Known for her elegance, charm, and sophistication, Lavinet is undoubtedly the leader of the group and its main vocalist! Famous for her vocal range and strength, she's always the trendsetter and is always wearing the most expensive, latest fashions as she represents the group in interviews and events!
☆♬○♩●♪✧♩ Briony ♩✧♪●♩○♬☆
Main dancer / Backup vocalist / Guitarist
Known for her pep and high energy, Briony supports Lavinet's vocals and entertains the crowd with her cheery physicality and boundless enthusiasm! She has a bit of a tomboyish, carefree, youthful persona, but still enjoys cutesy accessories! Diehard fans know that she enjoys training at a kickboxing gym when she's not on tour with the "Strikers!"
☆♬○♩●♪✧♩ Shery ♩✧♪●♩○♬☆
Maknae / Backup dancer / Keyboardist
Known as the baby of the group, Shery might sport the biggest fanbase, as fans adore her for her shy, lovely personality and gentle demeanor! She's the girliest and cutesiest of the group and enjoys lace, ruffles, pastels, and is known for collecting tea sets and accoutrements, leading some to refer to her as the group's "doll"!
☆♬○♩●♪✧♩ Ayla ♩✧♪●♩○♬☆
Rapper / Drummer
Known as the dark horse and punk of the group, Ayla stands out with her rocker outfits, leather chokers, shredded jeans, and tough, street-wise demeanor! While less favored by corporations and sponsorships for her rebellious personality, coarse language, and various piercings, Ayla is adored by fans for bringing edge to the group, hyping the crowd up as she pours her heart into her high-energy performances. She's issued several challenges to rivals to try and defeat her group in Battle of the Bands, and has never lost yet due to her fiery passion!
☆♬○♩●♪✧♩ Tallys ♩✧♪●♩○♬☆
Manager
The manager of the group, Tallys remains behind the scenes as she organizes and coordinates the Strikers' schedule, events, and business negotiations. Although she's not officially a member of the band, she's garnered her own fanbase for her cool composure and quiet refinement!
I hope you enjoy! 🥰

RWBY is a good show, and I’m tired of people pretending its not!
I’m sorry, I’m just so tired of all these random claims that RWBY is “boring anime cliche” or “racist white male writing”, So...let’s go over them in segments
Female characters:
Aren’t walking fanservice shots and aren’t sexualized
Aren’t degraded in their field (combat, tactics, dust usage, etc) to boost up male characters (cause seemingly female characters being too skilled at something is emasculating to incels)
When a woman says no to a man, the man takes no for an answer and doesn’t keep trying. (So dear Hbomberguy, stop claiming that Weiss x Jaune was ever a thing)
Women don’t require a man to “Defend their honor” (This is in response to the dude who harassed me in anonymous about V5 who was upset that Yang punched a creep)
Aren’t woobified or emotionally weakened, instead having reactions to things like normal human beings. (Sorry Shonen anime which loves to make women woobified or emotionally weakened vs men) Being capable of emotions but also doing things effectively.
Aren’t made into waifu for male characters. Nora is still a badass and even being allowed to explore who she is outside of Ren, which runs against the usual anime/manga bs. Weiss didn’t get with Jaune after finding out he helped w/ Neptune. Blake actually defended her boundaries when Sun crossed certain lines (even though they’re brotp not romantic, he’s a male character that could’ve been put as a pseudo-love interest). Yang is also shown to be more than just Blake’s GF as we see in Ruby Yang interactions, Yang vs Salem, Yang ageeing to talk with Robyn. They’re all their own characters not trying to be the perfect wife for a male character.
LGBT+ characters:
aren’t in a world of “everyone is gay or straight”, so for me at least coming across as more impactful
have Ilia (lesbian); Coco (lesbian); Terra (wlw) and Saphron (wlw) also married and w/ kid that aren’t treated different to any other couple; Scarlet (gay-male); Nolan (implied, I think its at this point and not confirmed, mlm); May (non-deadnamed, voiced by and helped crafted with the help of a trans VA, and not having her trans status be the central element of her character trans character); Blake (bi) and Yang (wlw) that are a main pair that are being allowed to build to a relationship at the same pacing as the hetero alt. pairing. BB being naturally built up and not rushed into a relationship, though still soft-canon locked in via Nora.
Are ALL ALIVE (funny how the straight white male characters get killed off?)
PoC characters:
Includes Marrow, Pietro, Joanna, Flynt, Yatsuhashi, Lie Ren, and Robyn as default heroes side
Includes Emerald having switched to the heroes side after having it foreshadowed in v3. Also possibly Elm and Harriet, depending on where they go in the future.
includes Sienna, who was admittedly actual wasted potential, being contrasted against Adam as the morally better version of violence in activism. A controlled violence actually giving a shit rights activist leader vs. a co-opting murderous abusive bloodthirsty psychopathic terrorist.
are easily the lesser in villain count vs. Caucasian villains.
So can the RWDE please stop trying to claim how RWBY isn’t better than anime/manga at least, but overall “isn’t progressive” in these areas.
Adam Taurus represents a very real element in real life regarding “Radical civil rights movements” ; extremism and co-opters; While the actual faunus rights aspect on its own is given a sympathetic light repeatedly. We also have Ilia Amitola, the female POC lesbian, get a redemption. While Adam Taurus, the cis white male edgelord? Is Evil  and gets his death by double penetration at the hands of two lesbians. (Edit: yes, I know Blake is Bi, as is her VA. It was an expression explaining how cis white male “authority” individuals get emasculated)
The WF has a lot of references, not specifically the Black Panther one. Also the WF on its own is fine, its the version that gets corrupted by Adam’s psychotic co-opting terrorist ass that is the problem.
Reflective of reality where if any group for any cause crosses into violence that involves innocent bystanders; then they lose any credibility and are nothing more than terrorists. I don’t care what the cause is. Which is exactly what the WF under Adam presents; but is just 1 vein of it with Sienna’s vein existing, Ghira’s, and even Blake’s. Was it handled perfectly? No, you could have easily have shaved time from Adam to give to Sienna and had her live to continue. Personally I found Sienna to be the actual wasted potential, but EruptionFang naturally loves cis white male evil men as his favorite Meow Meows. Don’t even try to recommend a gay or bisexual dude to rwby critics, they’ll flip and call it pandering.
The MC’s aren’t remotely “paper thin”, nor secondaries. Heck the only ones that fit that bill are characters in the tertiary vein that are supposed to be that way. The “two traits” falls apart if one actually pays attention to the characters.
And most fixit fanfics not only sexualize the characters in a show with no fanservice...
Sadly they also overfocus on male characters and have their favorite male characters talk down the female main characters.
Robyn Hill represents the people standing up NOT against the military, but against fascism/totalitarianism. We see that for all the “good intentions” that Ironwood MAY have? It is always sabotaged by him. Ironwood backstabs Ozpin, brings an Army as a show of force, does multiple projects behind people’s backs, and yet displays more than few acts of hypocrisy. Volume 7 literally showed him acting as a dictator because he believed that only he knew the answer to everyone’s problems. Yet the consequences of HIS actions are what led to Atlas Downfall. Yang and Blake even tried to get Robyn to work with Ironwood and Robyn was literally willing to do so. Which of course pissed off Ironwood stans that anyone, especially a POC hero of the people, would stand against a Cis White Male Authority figure. The elections in V7 meant that anyone’s authority could be challenged by the people. Of COURSE Ironwood stans REFUSE to acknowledge the election part was good.
The attempt to balance idealism with realism is pretty interesting. What do you do against an enemy with an unlimited army, immortality, and agents who seek to turn everyone against each other? Do you submit to the “inevitable?” Or do you keep fighting to the end, instead prolonging the end?
You can think of this as having borrowed a theme or two from dark souls!
RWBY is at the very least leaps and bounds beyond most anime it's close in genre with. I remember seeing, partially in jest, the idea that RWBY has half the fanbase it does for being an action anime with a female case and no fanservice and I think it might almost literally be true.
It is depressingly hard to find a decent action show with a female cast that doesn't sexualize them in gross ways. Even shows I like on the whole end up doing that.
Of course, the points regarding love are helped by the fact that a good chunk of the female cast is front and center in the story. They’re largely in the driver seat and aren’t secondary to any male titular protagonist. Thus you don’t get cases where a girl on the main cast is there to be… the girl.
In any other story, Oscar and/or Jaune  would be front and center. Heck, the three creators of RWBY are guys before their team grew so you’d think they’d “write what they know.” Yet they stick to their guns on having girls get shit done.
One Anime a person I know felt came close to this was, if you can believe it, Fairy Tail where Natsu might’ve been the prominent ass kicker but Erza is the one effectively leader the team, Wendy goes on an arc of learning to love herself and Lucy grows into the wizard that leads the charge against Acnologia.
Yet it sent mixed signals with how the girls (those of age) had designs that left little to the imagination. I can appreciate an artist honest in his horniness… but the Anime did something right when it came to Erza’s torture in Tartaros that helped sell the gravitas of the traumatic experience.
RWBY feels like the above but far more refined in execution. There’s a time and place for schlocky cheesecake but not when it clashes with the narrative and themes overall.
So tell me...without using Hbomberguys’ repeated false information about the “love triangle” or “self-insert” slander...how would YOU respectfully criticize RWBY?  How would you claim to be “a critic” yet still encourage people to watch RWBY?
If you try to bring up Hbomb’s 2.5 hour hate video, then anyone who tries to claim that a video from 2 years ago no longer is relevant is just being hypocritical. (Looking at you, RWDE Apologist, you know who you are)
Oh, one more thing. RWBY seasons 1-3 were the weakest in terms of writing and animation. But even so, the fact of the matter is that anything that happened in those seasons are ignored by critics, theorists, and straight shippers.

Listening to the V7 director commentary for the first time and I almost dropped my jaw when I heard Luna call the racist drunkards the "faces of Mantle" like??
You want these two assholes to represent all of Mantle yet expect the audience to give a shit when it's threatened? Fuck em and fuck Mantle!

Defending RWBY’s Writing: Why Yang does not owe Ironwood for her prosthetic arm.
So apparently R/RWBYCritics decided to take a line from Avengers: Civil War and claim that Yang Xiao Long betrayed Ironwood by not being grateful for the prosthetic arm she received in V4. As people want to simplify things and call Yang a traitor/terrorist, I am once again going to make a post/discussion defending Yang’s character.
For those wishing to see my Yang Xiao Long Defense Post? https://www.tumblr.com/iamafanofcartoons/693045544855207936/yang-xiao-long-defense-post
For those wishing to see the mindset of R/RWBYCritics? Just look at the end of this post for the screenshots I took of the rampant sexism towards Yang and Robyn, and the sheer worship of Ironwood.
I WILL HOWEVER point out some criticisms that I feel are valid. Of course those criticisms are ones that are going to be looking at both Yang and Ironwood’s perspectives, rather than be a statement trashing female characters like every RWBY Criticism video that licks Ironwood and Adam’s boots.
10 Reasons Defending Yang’s Actions and Debating Ironwood’s.
1. Just as much as Cap deserved to use the shield after Civil War. Just because James (Or should I say Pietro) gave her the arm doesn't mean she is bound to serve him. They had a serious disagreement about how to protect Atlas and Mantle and any goodwill she felt towards James about the arm wasn't enough to bridge the gap. To look at it another way, if James had given her the arm in Vol 8 as a peace offering would she have taken it and changed to his side?
2.  If you were given a wheelchair by a dictator and then joined a resistance movement. Should you then have to crawl on the ground?
3. Yang was asking Robyn Hill to trust Ironwood. She was asking Robyn to stop taking back the supplies that Ironwood bled from Mantle. And Robyn listened. Ironwood refused to trust people he cannot control or have leverage over. Yang took a risk in trusting a person who had always stood up for the people.
4. Dear people claiming that Robyn could have been one of Salem’s moles. HOW? Lionhart was trying to save his own skin. So was Raven. So was Roman. Robyn only served the people. So dear Ironwood apologists who call anyone opposing Ironwood a terrorist? Just stop....the fails in your logic are why I cannot in good faith treat Ironwood apologists with respect.
5. Ironwood didn't made it himself. He requested Penny's father who was much happy to be of help to her daughter's friends. Pietro? Who along with Penny defended Mantle and lived in Mantle, trying to care for the 99% while Ironwood sat in a cushy chair in the clouds and called Pietro and Penny’s home “a few city blocks?”  Second, Yang lost her arm because of Ironwood in the first place cuz his "military protection" wasn't good enough to prevent the attack. Third, Jimmy compensated  people because of his guilty conscious and her arm was of them.
6. Yang’s wearing an arm from a man who: Declared Martial Law Shot Dissenters Shot down escape vessels Threatened to bomb his own civilians Executed a Prisoner (Though she doesn't know this) It's like keeping an arm from a totalitarian. Yang lied to Ironwood. Is that reason to do any of the things he did? No? Then she's not at fault. The best case scenario is she gets a new arm down the line. Until then, She should keep it for its utility.
7.  Yang is a disabled person, there's no thing such as not deserving to live her life with full body autonomy. Ironwood did indeed make a selfless gesture by gifting her the prosthetic, but it precisely being a selfless gesture means Yang is in no way in debt with him. That’s not to say Ironwood doesn’t have good intentions. But just because you make a selfless gesture doesn’t mean people owe you anything.
8. A disabled character's prosthetics shouldn't be factored into this. Whatever you think about Yang's handling of the whole situation her having a prosthetic to help with her disability isn't a matter of "deserving" it. It's not like Yang asked for the arm, either.  Ironwood gave it to her as a gift. Gifts are typically given with the assumption of not getting anything in return.
9.  Taking away her prosthetic over a disagreement seems pretty ableist. She doesn't really owe him anything. It was a gift. Gifts are (or should be) given freely without the expectation of anything in return. That's what makes it a gift and not an exchange. "You don't agree with me? Well that means you don't get to use two arms"
10.    Yang was a 17-year-old girl who lost her arm defending a friend during a terrorist attack she was given the choice (by Ironwood) to shamelessly flee from. I think if anyone deserves an arm it’s her, plus it’s only fair to give disabled people a chance at normalcy if the technology allows, and they so choose to accept it.
Acknowledgement of criticisms
We don't really see anything to indicate that RWBY as a whole felt a sense of loyalty to Ironwood beyond just a kind of work partnership.
This could be in keeping with the idea of huntsmen not being loyal to any one kingdom, but there is a bit of difference in being loyal to a government, nation, or even town and being loyal to a person.
One you tend to put the good of that place or group above other concerns and with the other, the person may come before other considerations.
What can be overlooked is that there are cases where you oppose someone out of loyalty because you fear the path they are going down or even because you are trying to keep them from doing something they'll regret.
It would've been nice if the two of them had talked about it or Ironwood even asking how she was holding up after everything that happened, especially as he probably knows some stuff about trying to mentally process physical trauma. It may have even made the idea of going behind his back harder for Yang, maybe leading to Blake pushing more for telling Robyn about Amity rather than arrest her.
But those are valid criticisms, and I do not see much of that in discussions. What I DID see? Was more along these lines from R/RWBYCritics.
Reasons why I felt the need to put up this post after looking at R/RWBYCritics.
R/RWBYCritics, Their love of Ironwood, and their hate of Yang.
If you wish to see what R/RWBYCritics thinks of Yang?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just so you folks wouldn’t have to wade into the toxic sewer that is R/RWBYCritics...or Twitter. Did you know that at least 2 of the people in these mentions are Yang-hating fanfic writers who write fanfics involving Yang being beaten up? And as you may have noticed, their hate for Robyn is also there.
This weekend I will go into defending Robyn Hill.

Adam and Ironwood made good villains, I liked them as villains. As the bad guys opposing the heroes.
And that's all they were. Villains. Antagonists. They were not protagonists, they were not 'misunderstood'. They were characters created with the sole purpose of going against team RWBY.
and that's something critics seem to forget a lot.
