happy birthday kageyama tobio, our most beloved pouty, blueberry boy 💙 here's a lil fic for u:

When Tobio is surprised with a huge chocolate cake on his 27th birthday, he starts to think about some pillars in his life.

He thinks about how he's in a new team, living a whole new routine, but everything around him feels deeply nostalgic.

From the smiles of his teammates when they win a game, the caresses he receives on his hair and his high school friends annoying him during their video calls, to the sight of his sister preparing curry whenever she visits him, everything is new but still old.

Because Kageyama Tobio's been surrounded by loved ones for years, always creating bonds with them. It's a reality he always dreamed of for his future and only later realized he already had it.

Trust, peace, love. He's had all of these feelings for years. And he is sure that he's truly, unconditionally loved as soon as Shoyo pulls him into a crushing hug, tiptoeing to rest his head on the crook of Tobio’s neck. He feels warm.

Like always, their bodies feel warm together. They feel complete. Tobio can't help but smile at such feelings.

“I can't believe you lied to me.” Tobio whispers, rubbing his face against his boyfriend’s soft curls. “I thought you'd only arrive tomorrow.”

“Surpriseee,” Shoyo sing-songs, sounding delighted as he rubs his head against Tobio’s body. “I told you I'd get revenge on your birthday!”

“Dumbass.” Tobio’s smile grows wider. He remembers surprising Shoyo on his birthday, in June. And now he's being surprised in December.

Shoyo had said that the flight from Brazil to Italy was delayed, so Tobio didn't imagine finding him in the hallway—singing happy birthday with a cake in hands—as soon as he opened the door.

But it's a wonderful surprise. The best gift Tobio could have gotten that day.

They break apart and keep eye contact for long seconds, admiring each other’s features with dreamy looks. Then, Shoyo gently cups Tobio’s face to stroke his soft cheekbones with his thumbs, a gentle touch that he knows Tobio loves.

“I missed you, querido,” Shoyo says, voice filled with love and affection. Tobio is totally mesmerized by his boyfriend’s honey eyes, and he only stops looking when they close their eyes as soon as Shoyo leans up to plant a peck on his lips. “Happy birthday, Tobio.”

It's just past midnight and Miwa suddenly calls him, like she always does every year.

Before answering, Tobio only has time to pull Shoyo closer to press his lips against his once again, two vibrant smiles meeting each other tenderly. It's quick, but enough for now.

Tobio wouldn't want to change anything about that perfect day.

Kageyama never liked winter. Sure, he enjoyed the one night a year Miwa would come back and split KFC with him, and yeah, snow could be enchanting, but it always felt... out of place.

Tobio especially disliked his birthday. The sun barely rose, if at all, on the winter solstice - any light that day was a gift, his birthday present from the universe. If he was unlucky, if he had displeased Her in some way, then he'd be given dismal rain, or even worse, empty grey fog.

And sure, it could've been seasonal depression. It could've been that the lack of light and warmth pushed his circadian rhythm back, and made his emotions just a little bleaker, but it always felt like something... more than that.

Tobio sits on the grass. It hasn't been mown in a while and the thin green leaves tickle at his ankles. The sun shines, straight at him, and even with his eyes closed it's far too bright. His skin feels warm, and the world smells so new today.

Everyone around him seems in a better mood - Daichi took his gakuran off to lounge in the light, and Sugawara was overjoyed for some likely related reason. Asahi's hair is undone, Nishinoya is beaming, Tanaka is admiring Kiyoko from afar. There's a moment of - well, not peace, exactly. Not quiet. Serenity, perhaps. Birds call, and children laugh, and the leaves on the trees look like wreaths or angelic haloes. Everything is just how it should be, right here, right now.

Tobio always felt somehow... connected to the sun, like he was destined to meet it, destined to follow its rays for the rest of his life. He can't look at it. He knows he will always follow it, but it's too bright, too strong of a star. He will never be able to look the sun in the face; he will never be able to touch it. The sun will always be so close, but just an inch out of reach. He's grown to be content with that. He's happy, being dragged behind a blazing star, standing in solar flares and following paths of sunbeams. He's learned that he loves being just a little bit behind, having the sun being a little bit out of reach. It gives him something to stand for, to reach for, to keep trying so desperately to touch, just for a moment.

He loves the sun.

He feels the grass shift next to him.

He's all but drowned out the quick remarks and nonchalant laughter of his teammates, learned to ignore the flirting and fighting and fumbling, but this is something he could never ignore.

Something feels warmer; Tobio knows he can never stare at the sun, but as Hinata sits next to him, starts talking, Tobio feels once again that wherever the sun is, he is home.

The sun sets at dusk.

Tobio used to hate his birthday - there was no sun, no light, the shortest day of the year.

But now, he's found his own sun. The sun that shines year-round. And while he still won't ever catch up to it, it touches him, and it smiles, and it gives him kisses for birthday presents.

Tobio hates winter - but with Hinata's dumb smile, rampant practising, caramel eyes, it's summer year-round.

The ball took flight then, and Shoyou had a thought that the light filtering into the empty gym must’ve unburdened it as it floated. From Kageyama’s hands, it placed itself under the dawn. A moment in time caught on it like it was what mattered the most in the world. Gold awakened the faded leather, volleyball arching over the net.

And there it was--a brightness that could be recalled as many times as he liked.

Shoyou thought he should’ve grown used to Kageyama’s talent long ago given how many hours they’d poured into playing together, but Shoyou never stopped being so taken by the consistency and boldness of his sets. Of him. Brightness like that was glaringly difficult to get used to. It could be bitter, or contrary, and it might’ve been too good for him. But this time, this time, his body responded with kindness to it.

There was tightness coiled in his neck that Shoyou hadn’t noticed before. Maybe he really didn’t deserve a toss as beautiful as that. But insecurity was far-flung now, because that toss was for him, and he would be plain stupid to turn it down. So his legs left behind stagnancy with the smallest nudge forward.

Third tempo. Shoyou ripped his feet off the ground to run beneath the set’s peak and kicked off. At the highest point of his jump, with his knees bent and the number ten on his back thanking Kageyama, Shoyou extended his arm to reach that talent Kageyama had offered him. His palm kissed the ball right there in the sky. The heft of it fitted itself in Shoyou’s heart, a sound thump resounding through the gym.

When Shoyou floated back down to earth, the sunlight was bathing the court with more softness than before. The edges of sunlight spilling all over the place were almost glassy. He loved it when they could turn the lights of the gym off and just let the ascending sun run along with them unbothered.

“I like it a lot this way,” Shoyou told Kageyama, almost laughing from the breadth of his own grin and swishing around to face him like the morning breeze. “It’s like the court is in the sky.”

Kageyama blinked slowly, and a smile fell across his face the same way the outdoor light did.

His face was bright. It was the color of afternoons when his mother would split open a peach with her loving hands to give to Natsu in a little bowl. And the insides of the slices were yellow and bright, and they would glow against the blue winter. He looked to be moving to gentle music that neither of them could physically hear.

The music took a fading pause on a soft note, waiting for them.

Shoyou let go of his breath, his grin calming into a smile. It gave him new life.

THIS SHIT is the only thing that makes me happy these days. Only volleyball players on my mind. all day long. how do you expect me to work in these conditions...

I sure hope I can draw more of these fellas, there are so many characters that I like (my favorite is Nishinoya, he's definitely the one I'll draw next).

• ⭐️ the obvious is at eye level (but i might need a step stool), by dr_awkward221 — hinata watching sakusa’s relationship with miya and slowly realizing things about his own his kageyama. i loove this one, it’s unbearably good.

• ⭐️🎖️ let the light out, by uhohshouto — kagehina make a bet in which the other one must ask for something of the loser. kageyama wants a kiss… and then something more. seriously though, i can’t believe this; it’s a wonderful story, so entertaining. rated e!

• epic, by esselle — a surfing au with hinata as an instructor and kageyama as an arrogant professional. this charming scenario surely made my day.

• let’s take this offline, by pas_dautres — office employees kagehina who meet through emails and reports. i had to add this, because it’s nice, surely worth the read.

• know you better, by mysterytwin — bakery worker kageyama and spell shop owner hinata in a world of magic! great development and very poetic.

note that this is based on the fics i’ve known since i entered the fandom and that i truly enjoy. either they’re famous or not famous, i’m just adding them here for my future self contentment and for those who, just as me, wanted a full list of kagehina fics upon getting engaged in haikyuu media.

haikyuu ships but its things about their relationships or moments that I think would surprise their friends/teammates

starting off with my boys Daisuga: honestly definitely the rest of the team forgets that they haven't been together forever, and are never expecting when either of them are acting like, well, teenagers in a relationship. Specifically in regards to being shy in front of each other or wanting to impress each other, the rest of the team always is surprised by it because in their mind, like, why are you feeling insecure in this relationship I thought you've been dating for 2 years and Suga is just like "try 3 months BITCH now I need you to find out what his favourite kind of chocolate is I'll pay you real money if he doesnt realize why you're asking."

right along to Kagehina and honestly, literally even just realizing they have a normal relationship. I think everyone absolutely understands how they got together, but I imagine the first time ANYONE sees them out in public together they ALL have a moment thats like "oh shit they like... are actually dating" and every time Kagehina is just like... on a lunch date, or going shopping, walking a dog, just chatting. Like people are surprised that they genuinely spend time together outside of sports. The first time Kageyama goes with Hinata as his date to a family wedding the entire family is flabberghasted bc they definitely thought this was an on-court obsession only

Iwaoi is really simple, literally just people realizing that Iwaizumi has genuine romantic affection towards him is the funniest thing to me. There's a week where Iwaoi is worried bc Iwa had to go to school with a hickey on his neck but literally NOBODY bats an eye or even mentions it because "yeah Oikawa obviously-" but when theyre changing for practice and they see that Oikawa has a hickey on his neck the entire team goes feral and practically tackles Iwaizumi like "you committed to kissing him for that long?????? YOU?????" like they cannot comprehend Iwaizumi actively participating. (obviously this is also the only time they every see Iwazumi embarassed enough to visibly blush which only compounds things.)

Bokuaka's is so stupid but honestly - the first moment the team realizes that Akaashi is, like, attracted to Bokuto and isnt just his best friend that got carried away. Konoha catches Akaashi checking out Bokuto's ass as he's leaving the changing room and it legitimately ruins Konoha's day. What is he supposed to do with this information.

To be completely fair, Ushiten as a concept probably absolutely baffles the entire Shiratorizawa team for multiple reasons. I think though the obvious one is that the rest of the team cannot understand how little Ushijima is bothered by any of Tendou's antics, where Tendou is VRRY touchy and goofy and lots of PDA and affection and Ushijima is completely receptive and unbothered by it, if not going out of his way to intentionally make Tendou laugh to invite him to more. Like Tendou absolutely would sit on his lap during lunch and Reon would be sitting there losing his mind bc last time he sat too close to Ushijima he got a lecture on personal space. Oh, but now suddenly he's super chill and relaxed and nothing bothers him its tendou doing it.

Asanoya's is a little sad tbh but I think, specifically the second and first years, would be surprised by how serious Noya is about the relationship and how little he tolerates jokes about them being opposites/a surprising pair or any of that. Like theyre shocked to find out how seriously he's taking being a boyfriend and really trying to make sure Asahi is happy. The idea that it isnt superficial or just for fun for him is surprising to them.

Arankita - in a comedy of errors Atsumu accidentally finds out they they are ~no longer virgins~ and legitimately has to leave practice for 20 minutes. There's a piece of him, and the rest of the team, that had 100% believed Kita was a robot and they just.... the idea that this was something that happened organically and not for "procreation" doesnt fit in their worldview. Kita smacks the next person who brings it up and that ends the conversation.
