I'm sorry to tell you, but it is A SCAM.

This person sent me an ask about her sick cat out of the blue and then immediately followed me. The post on her blog looks very convincing, a vet bill with her same name as the PayPal and everything, even showing crochet plushies offered in exchange for support.

However, a quick Google Image search for a picture of the plushes in question returns an identical photo on another person's (better corroborated) sick cat post from October of this year.

Furthermore, the blog header implies that this is a multifandom blog and lists a small handful of popular ones, like Good Omens and The Lord of the Rings.

However... There's no such content on this blog with even a cursory glance. It was made super recently and has a super shallow archive, just a really incoherent jumble of popular posts unrelated to any of these fandoms, and is mostly just self-reblogs of the sick cat post.

I feel bad reacting doubtfully to such a tragic story, but like... this person's stolen someone else's real struggle and is using it to scam kindhearted folks like us. I've been scammed by posts like this before, and I don't regret trusting enough to believe and want to help, but I do regret not doing my homework.

Always do digging, especially when contacted by a blog you've never seen before, and back-search any distinctive-looking images to see if they've been stolen. Block this person and spread it around that they're deceiving others.

Always be scam aware. People in need of assistance should not be going into private messages to ask for money or boosts to their posts. Especially be scam aware for blogs with no activity older than 6hrs. It is a well known scam to scrape actual requests for help, for photos and information to seem legit. Do not interact if you're not sure and unable to image search potentially triggering photos. Report accounts for unlawful uses or content as it is a phishing scam.

You can find this post on facebook where the pet owner requests donations be done towards the veterinary clinic, not towards a paypal marked as friends/family. If this is not a friend you know and you're not sure then don't give them the response they ask for and report as a phishing scam. If you can find the same text posted elsewhere on the internet and it predates the entire blog by years/months/days then toss that message. Support your friends or people who are friends of that friend. Network or be scammed.

I've seen the same scam post at least three times now

you remember how there was a post going around a little while ago discussing how to spot a scam account - specifically this post? please be a little more conscious of what exactly you're signal boosting by reblogging a sad cat story.

are some of them real? probably, yeah. are most? NOT AT ALL.

for example

this is the post i've been seeing recently. only around 40 notes, could be from a small blogger, right? they've even said they're desperate enough to sell a phone they have (still in the box...?) to pay for vet bills. Mhm.

if you look at their blog, it checks out! they're active, they don't have the bot signifiers, there's just one more thing to check.

and wouldn't you know it-
