out of the blue, clear sky (chapter one) // Jake Seresin x Reader
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pairing: hangman x fem!reader (no y/n)
Synopsis: what's a bit of state rivalry between pilots? You and Hangman see each other in a new light after a late night at a dive bar, and this started as a one shot, then suddenly it was 2k words of country karaoke, and now I want to write a fluffy love story
Warnings: 18+, minors please DNI -- this is a 5 chapter deal and this one is pretty PG, but it'll ratchet up to E in a later chapter, and I don't want to mislead anyone. In the interim, there's swearing, but yeah mostly flagging this because something smutty this way comes
Length: 3.2k
A/N: This is self-indulgent to the max, and payoff is late in coming, but I hope y’all enjoy it lol. I regret to inform you that Sold (The Grundy Country Auction Incident) is required listening before reading; it’s just important to note that it’s a fun/funny song, not a sultry one. Jake’s song is “Carried Away” by George Strait, also a delight, but that one is sweet.
tagging the usuals: @peakyrogers@winterrebel04 @blue-aconite and the folks who convinced me to post: @bioodforbiood @et-homephone
chapter one / chapter two / chapter three / chapter four / chapter five
Should you have been out this late, the night before you had drills in this morning? No.
Should you be taking anything anyone said at this hour seriously? No.
Should you be taking anything anyone said at this hour seriously? No.
Were you all still going to be defensive when Bradley decided to be coastal elitist about something? Absolutely, yes.
“Man, we were having such a good night,” Fanboy muttered, as you, Bob, and Hangman were immediately up in arms.
“You can just say you don’t like when women have feelings, Bradford,” you said. (A grossly reductive accusation, to be sure, but if Rooster was going to generalize, you weren’t going to take the high road.)
Coyote snorted, taking another pull of his beer as Phoenix came back to the table, kicking her feet up on Bob’s lap.
“God, that felt good,” she sighed, holding out a hand and waiting for someone to put a drink into it. “Who’s next?”
“Presumably Hangman,” Bob said, handing her a glass, “to redeem the genre of country music.”
“Nah, I don’t sing,” Jake waved a hand airily, and you knew better than to look at him, but you did anyways.
Normally, you were sober enough to ignore any sorts of feelings that fluttered, unprovoked, in your stomach when you looked at Jake Seresin. He was a pilot like you, you were in the same detachment, it wasn’t going to be something you acted on, you were far from his type anyways…you had a million little rationalizations as to why a crush was impractical, but it persisted nonetheless.
Crushes were inconvenient like that.
This deep into the night, “normally” did not apply.
So you looked at him, sternly reminding yourself to not do anything so dramatic as let your breath catch, or pulse leap.
He didn’t seem nearly as deep in his cups as the rest of the group.
No, of course, he and Phoenix seemed to be the only ones whose eyes were still clear and faces weren’t flushed. In fact, he had the audacity to look as unfairly attractive as he did in the daytime in his uniform, even though you’d all been awake for close to twenty hours now. His blonde hair was mussed, and looked softer than normal, like he’d carded his fingers through it enough that any styling products had relinquished their hold, and it was a damn good look.
You frowned down at your drink, the deep umber liquid not seeming any lower, though you’d been nursing it for half an hour.
“It’s okay,” you said, to distract yourself, more than anything. “Texas doesn’t really count as Country, anyways.”
Mickey tittered, and you felt Jake’s eyes on you, but didn’t trust yourself to look up to meet them.
“Damn straight,” Jake huffed. “Texas was actually–”
“Its own country,” Reuben interrupted, longsuffering.
“For seven whole years,” Bradley continued, “an independent nation all of their own, called…”
“The Republic of Texas,” Javy lifted his glass. “And they were called Texians, actually, not Texans.”
The three of them clinked their glasses together in a cheers, and Jake held up his hands.
“Okay, okay,” he shrugged, nonplussed. “So, I’ve got a lot of state pride, sue me.”
“That’s okay,” Phoenix said, before winking almost imperceptibly at you. “Not like there’s any good country artists from Texas.”
Jake froze. “Okay, now, hang on–”
“Ah, you’re right,” you sighed, grateful for distraction of goading Hangman into singing. “Beyonce took all the musical talent, regardless of genre, and there’s no one left.”
Jake set his bottle down on the table. “That’s bold, coming from someone from Kentucky.”
“I can’t hear you over the sound of Kentucky-born legend Loretta Lynn,” you said calmly.
Jake sputtered. “Loretta–”
“Patty Loveless, too,” Bob said helpfully, and you didn’t know how he knew that, but you were grateful for the WSO’s encyclopedic memory. “And Chris Stapleton, if modern’s your thing.”
Jake gaped at the two of you, then held up a hand to count on his fingers. “Willie Nelson, Garth Brooks, George Strait–”
“Who?” you interrupted, innocently. Your dad had a George Strait cassette he’d played until the tape wore out, but Jake’s eyes widened almost comically.
“Please,” he asked, in the most serious tone you’d heard from him all night, “please, tell me you’re joking.”
Behind him, Reuben had a hand over his mouth, trying not to laugh, and you managed to keep your expression wide-eyed and blank, shrugging lightly.
Jake stared at you for a long moment, then he stood up, sharply.
“Cretins,” Jake declared, pointing at you, then around at the group. “All of you!”
And he huffed his way up to the stage.
Phoenix leaned back in her chair to hold out her hand to you, palm up, which you high fived unashamedly as Jake aggressively flipped through the song book.
He punched a code into the machine on the edge of the stage, then dragged a stool to the middle of the stage.
“Evening, everyone,” he said into a mic, and you rolled your eyes as every female spine in the bar straightened, looking towards the stage. It wasn’t lost on you that he’d turned his accent up, as well as donning an air of “aw, shucks,” humility as he settled onto the barstool.
A couple cat calls echoed around the bar, as contemplative guitar strings plucked over the sound system.
“Notttt what I was expecting,” Coyote said under his breath, and Hangman cleared his throat before he started singing.
“I don’t take my whisky to extremes,” Jake sang, looking pointedly at the group of you, with the near empty bottle on the table, and Rooster flipped him off. “I don’t believe in chasing crazy dreams…”
As his voice ran around the bar, tables fell quiet, turning back to the stage. Hangman’s voice, normally more callous than decadent, seemed softer, and the simple lyrics of the song rang like a promise.
“My feet are planted firmly on the ground,” Jake crooned, and that really was the only word for it, an effortless spell none of you had been expecting, “but darlin’, when you come around…”
“Well shit,” Fanboy muttered to the group as Jake went all-in on the chorus, “how are we supposed to make fun of him when he’s actually good?”
Shit indeed.
Because he sounded like someone sweet who would promise forever to a girl on the way back from a Friday Night football game, someone who'd give you their jacket and get you home by 9pm. Some sound tech was conspiring against you, because they dimmed the lights in the bar, a soft spotlight falling onto Jake. And he should’ve looked worse like that, in the dramatic lighting, but it made his jaw seem sharper, his eyes brighter, and if you listened closely, you could hear the sound of every woman in this bar falling a little in love.
They cheered when he finished the chorus, and Hangman was eating it up, wiping his palms on his jeans, and pushing to his feet.
“This has backfired,” Phoenix mumbled, when Jake hopped off the stage, weaving his way through the tables, starting on the next verse.
“We have created a monster,” you agreed.
“No ‘we’ about it,” Javy muttered. “This is all you guys.”
And you supposed it was.
Jake was making his way over to your table, and you steeled yourself for his arrogance, but were still unprepared.
He smirked as he siddled over to Phoenix, and she rolled her eyes but when he held out a hand, she extended hers, and the rest of the audience squealed when he brushed a kiss over the edges of her knuckles.
You winced internally, why did he have to be so handsome?? He got away with stuff like this, and you couldn’t even be mad at him–
He turned to you.
It had to be the whisky, that’s why you felt the weight of his eyes so heavily. The green of them glittered in the spotlight, and a part of you was loyally muttering “asshole” but another part of you felt like giggling with the rest of the bar.
And then he walked towards you.
“I get carried away by the look, by the light in your eyes,” he sang, holding eye contact in a way that had to be indecent. You needed to look away so you could remember how to breathe, but you couldn’t back down, so you tilted your head and raised an eyebrow at him, unimpressed.
Which, of course, he took as a challenge.
“Before I even realize the ride I’m on, baby, I’m long gone,” Jake sang, stepping closer.
He reached for your hand, and if Phoenix could do it, you could too–but he didn’t kiss your hand. No, he lifted it, prompting you to stand and spinning you, like prom. The spotlight had followed him, and you felt it brightening the air around you as he pulled you into it.
“I get carried away, nothing matters, but being with you,” he sang, and instead of letting you wilt back into your seat and out of the light, he dropped your hand around the back of his neck, between the ends of his hair and the top of his shirt, eyes smirking with the challenge, as he continued. “Like a feather flying high up in the sky, on a windy day, I get carried away.”
There was more of the song, you knew that.
But in another, very real sense, you were closer to Hangman than you ever remembered being, close enough to notice his green eyes had flecks of gold in them, and that he had the smallest indentations in the skin along the edges of his eyes, from where his face held the memory of past smiles. And now you knew what his hair felt like between your fingers, and that it wasn’t cologne, he just smelled good.
“I get carried away,” Jake repeated, stepping just a step closer to you, and maybe it made you a coward, but you took a step back. He smirked, victorious, and turned, letting your hand fall back to your side as the spotlight followed him back up to the stage.
Mickey opened his mouth and you glared at him. “Not a word, Fanboy.”
He closed his mouth with a snap, but the rest of the group looked entirely too amused for your comfort.
“Thank you, ladies and gents,” Jake was saying on the stage, dropping into a deep bow and putting the microphone back. “And, uh, Kentucky?”
You looked up at the stage, annoyed to find Jake’s eyes already on you, even through the glare of the spotlight.
“Would love,” he grinned, all teeth, “to see you top that.”
You heard Rooster chuckle, and that, more than anything, had you pushing out of your chair up to the stage.
Jake offered you a hand as you got closer, to help you up the steps and you glowered at him as you took it.
“Thanks, darlin’,” you muttered.
“Anytime, sugar,” he shot back, and you hated that his voice sounded way more unaffected than yours.
You were flipping through the songbook before you realized how impossible this was about to be.
Natasha had already trotted out the ‘fuck all men’ Carrie Underwood play, and Jake had taken the soft and sweet option; you had to do something different. Something in the ‘Chicken Fried’ vein would be funny, but it would also prove Bradley's point; Gretchen Wilson would do the trick, but she wasn’t from Kentucky…
Your eyes fell on a John Michael Montgomery song and you smiled to yourself.
Perfect.
“Hiya, folks,” you said cheerily, going for cutesy rather than borrowing Jake’s bashful routine. A couple girls were glaring at you, having seen Jake serenade you and misinterpreting that familiarity, but you ignored them.
“You’ve got this, babe!” Phoenix called, and you heard Payback and Fanboy clapping loudly.
You gave them a mock curtsy, and waited for the song to pick up.
And boy howdy, did it.
A banjo, loud and proud, curled through the bar and Bob’s eyes lit up, even as Jake’s jaw dropped.
If you could land this, it would be epic.
You heard recognition ripple through the room and someone in the front row started clapping along to the beat. You smiled at them gratefully as the fast tempo whirled around you.
“Well, I went down to the Grundy county auction,” you sang, at an auctioneer’s pace, hopping off the stage and wandering through the crowd like Jake had, “where I saw something I just had to have.”
You’d upped your accent too, and it wasn’t smooth the way Jake’s was, but you knew it didn’t sound half bad in the tenor key.
“My mind told me I should proceed with caution,” you sang, getting closer to your table, and holding out a hand to Natasha, like Jake had, “but my heart said go ahead and place a bid on that.”
She stood, highly amused, and you twirled her into you so her back was pressed against the front of your body. Her hand slid up your legs as she put on a show, loyal like you knew she would be, and you could focus on the rapid fire lyrics as the bar cheered for Nat’s dancing skills.
"And I said, “Hey pretty lady, won't you give me a sign? I'd give anything to make you mine o' mine; I'll do your biddin' and be at your beck and call."
Natasha was laughing, you could feel her upper body shaking but she rolled her hips and you went with her and was Coyote miming throwing money at the two of you, so you leaned into it.
You finished the chorus in a rush, people whooped, the sultry mood Jake had said absolutely decimated by the ridiculous patter.
You spun Phoenix back out and she sank gracefully back into a seat as you walked around the group of your friends, their boots stomping supportively. As you sang the next verse, you avoided looking at Jake, knowing you needed to keep your momentum and circling back to kneel in front of Bob dramatically.
The sweet WSO blushed at the attention, and the bar whooped when you crooked a finger under his chin to tilt his face up to you, before pointing out his ‘ruby red lips, blonde hair, blue eyes’ that matched the line in chorus.
“If you know it, sing along,” you yelled into the mic before pointing it to the ceiling as you weaved your way back to the stage, relieved beyond belief when the rest of the inebriated crowd joined you in singing the last chorus.
It was a mercy, because you needed to breathe.
You stepped back up onto the stage, having caught your breath, and ending the song on a yodel that had everyone laughing. Were they in love with you—no. But they seemed entertained, and you’d take that; you bowed deeply as the bar cheered, blowing a smug kiss at Hangman when you came back up.
Which was a mistake.
Because the look on his face was something you hadn’t expected to see, an expression that wavered between respect and something you didn’t recognize, and you weren’t prepared to find out. A moment later, it was gone, chased away by a dimpled smile and the tipping of an imaginary hat as Jake broke his gaze away from you.
What the hell was that?
You fiddled with the mic, stepping down off the stage and nodding to a couple folks who lifted their drinks as you made your way back to the group. They cheered for you good naturedly, and gave another curtsy as you found your seat.
“Who knew she had pipes?” Payback teased, uncapping a fresh beer and passing it to you.
“Anything for the virtue of the Bluegrass state,” you demured, taking the beer gratefully.
Someone from another group was up on the stage, you heard a phone ring distantly, and the normal din of the bar creeped back in as the adrenaline seeped out of your system.
You were sure you were all going to regret this, in the morning.
Well, most of you.
Natasha still looked fine and Jake…
Jake wasn’t at the table.
You frowned slightly, trying to keep your expression neutral as you leaned forward in your seat, looking around the room to find the Texan. He wasn’t in your row, he wasn’t at the bar getting an order…
Your eyes found him by the bar’s entrance, holding his phone to his head with one hand, the other blocking his ear. He was pacing, and when he turned back towards the group of you, his forehead was wrinkled in an uncharacteristic frown.
His eyes met yours.
For the second time tonight, you read something in his face that you knew you hadn’t been meant to see.
Jake’s jaw tightened and he turned away, pacing again. When he got closer to the door, he reached for it, but a moment later, his hand was back by his ear, blocking out sound as he listened intently. You saw him start for the door again, but each time needed to pull back to listen more closely to whoever was on the other end of the line.
You didn’t plan to head towards him, but your feet had you halfway across the bar before you realized you weren’t in your row. As you got closer, you could feel the tension radiating off of him in waves, even if you couldn’t hear what he was saying.
When you opened the door for him, Jake’s gaze felt searching.
You held the heavy door, pressing yourself against the wall of the bar so Jake could go by. As he edged by you, his eyes flitted back to yours briefly.
“Thank you,” he mouthed, and he waited for your chin to dip in a nod of acknowledgement before he was turning, jogging towards his truck. You watched him struggle with his keys in the dim parking lot light, and then pinch the bridge of his nose as he realized he couldn’t drive, not like this. He turned towards the intersection, waving as a cab came into view.
“What was that about?”
You jumped at the question, surprised to find Bob standing next to you.
“I don’t know,” you said, uncertainly. A cab pulled up to the curb and Jake folded his long body into it, the phone still pressed to his ear.
You realized Bob was holding the door for you, having quietly leaned up against it to take some of the weight so you didn’t have to.
“We should probably head back, right?” you asked, and Bob nodded, slowly.
“Early morning, all that,” he agreed.
You drew in a quick breath, before smiling automatically, following Bob back inside. As you gathered your things, closed at your portion of the tab, and fielded compliments from strangers, you weren’t certain if it was the night air or the expression on Hangman’s face as he’d left so quickly that had you feeling suddenly sober.

Maverick had taken you home and let his wife, Penny, help you get settled in to your temporary home. Penny was a lovely woman, smile lines clear on her face. While she was easily one of the most beautiful women you had ever seen in your entire life, her easy confidence is what ultimately drew you to the older woman.
“It’s lovely to meet you,” you had gushed as Maverick led you into their home. It was a simple, white house close to the edge of town, and the interior gave a particularly cozy atmosphere that had you relaxing almost instantly.
“You as well, darlin’,” she smiled, green eyes twinkling. You went to shake her hand, but she pulled you into a tight hug instead. “No need to be so formal, sweetheart. You’ll be staying here until we can find something else for you, after all.”
“Of course,” you sighed. Penny pulled away and rested her hands on your shoulders. Peering over at her husband, the corners of her mouth dipped down in disapproval.
“Speaking of which, Pete, when are you going to get that school house built?” she griped. Maverick rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly and offered her a small smile.
“We’ll start it here soon, I reckon,” he murmured, causing Penny’s frown to turn into a full blown scowl.
“You’ve been saying that for months now!”
“And when I find the workers, we’ll get right on it,” he replied pointedly. “Besides, we just now got ourselves someone to teach all the little hellions.”
Penny rolled her eyes and muttered something under her breath that you didn’t quite catch. She turned her attention back to you and smiled, guiding you towards the stairs. “Come on, darlin’. Let’s go get you situated. Mav’ll bring your things up in a little bit.”
You followed her dutifully up the stairs and down the hall until she stopped in front of the the last door on the left.
“This is you, sweetheart,” she said, opening the door. It was a simple room. A four poster bed was placed against the far wall and a wardrobe on the wall to your right beside the window. A small vanity sat at your left, and as you took it all in, you felt the excitement of the day wash over you.
“I love it,” you said quietly, grinning from ear to ear. Penny’s smile matched your own.
“I’m glad. I know it’s not much, but you’re free to do with it what you like until we get you your own place. It even has a view of the mountains.”
At her words, you moved over to the window, drawing back the curtains and leaning in to look out. There were no words to describe it. You had been a little worried to move out to the middle of the desert, knowing how much you’d miss your sprawling green landscapes. The mere thought had you feeling a mixture of guilt and homesickness. Your parents were probably beside themselves at that very moment, despite the note you had left them explaining where you were going. You could practically hear the wails of your mother from hundreds of miles away. But the view of the mountains before you almost made up for those awful feelings within you. It was like a painting you had seen once at the market. The blue sky popped against the muted oranges and brown that lay underneath, and the white clouds that floated by looked almost unreal.
“It’s beautiful,” you breathed quietly, and Penny chuckled.
“It is, isn’t it?” she began, coming over to stand next to you. “It’s even more beautiful at night when you can see all the stars in the sky.”
“I can imagine,” you said, already smiling at the thought. Penny straightened up and clapped her hands together.
“Right! Well, how about you and I go downstairs and get supper started? The butcher sold me a prime cut of beef today, and there’s a recipe I’ve been dying to try.”
You followed her out the door, the smile still plastered on your face. “I’d love to.”
Tumblr media
Your dinner with Maverick and Penny had been full of conversation and laughter. Maverick told you about how he had come to found the town with his best friend, Tom “Iceman” Kazansky, who also happened to be the towns sitting sheriff.
“He’s a stubborn son of a gun,” Maverick had said with a hint of a smile, “but there’s no one I trust more.”
Penny had cocked an eyebrow at him at that, and Maverick chuckled, placing his hand on top of hers where it sat at the table. “No one else but you, of course darlin’.”
“Do you know when Bradley and the others are getting back into town?” she had asked him some time later. Maverick sighed, sitting back in his chair with a wistful look on his face.
“I don’t. You know how those boys are. Here one minute, gone the next. If I’ve told them once, I’ve told them a thousand times, ‘keep me posted so I know you’re still alive.’ Do they listen to me? No, I’m just an overly cautious, old man.”
“You’re not that old,” Penny smiled, causing the corners of Maverick’s mouth to twitch into a small, returning one. “You’ve still got a couple of years, I’d say.”
“How kind of you to say,” Maverick laughed. He stood up from the table, stretching. “That was a mighty fine meal you two girls cooked up. But, I have some things I need to tend to before the night is over. Y/n, you’ll be joining us at church in the morning, won’t you?”
“Oh, I wasn’t sure I was allowed to,” you said, setting your fork down sheepishly. Penny smiled at you warmly.
“Of course you are! You don’t need an invitation to attend service. The reverand will be happy to meet you, and I’m sure it’ll be a good opportunity to see where you’ll be teaching the young ones. When did you want to start? We can announce it while everyone is gathered tomorrow.”
“Oh,” you said, thinking. Much like every other decision you had made recently, you decided to dive head first into the opportunity. “I can begin on Monday. Let’s say, eight o’clock? I can start getting things ready tomorrow afternoon after the service, provided that’s alright with the reverend.”
“I don’t see why that would be a problem,” said Maverick. “I’ll let him know as soon as we get there tomorrow morning. Have a pleasent evening, ladies. Penny, I’ll probably be late, so don’t wait up.”
“That man never stays still for long,” Penny sighed, smiling fondly after her husband. Standing, she stacked the dishes in her hands and made her way to the kitchen. “You go on ahead to bed, sweetheart. I’ll get the dishes tonight.”
“Are you sure?” you asked, following after her, and she waved you off.
“‘Course! You’ve had a long day, and you’ve still got some unpacking to do. You can help me after breakfast in the morning.”
“Alright,” you relented, turning to head upstairs. “Goodnight, Penny.”
“Goodnight, darlin’.”
Tumblr media
The following morning came quickly, and you found yourself excitedly walking into the sanctuary of the church in your Sunday best. A few people milled about you as they took their seats in the pews up and down the aisle. Some looked at you curiously, but you paid them no mind as you followed Maverick and Penny to the front of the church. You all sat down in the front pew and waited for the service to start.
“Did you hear?” said a girl to your left. “The Dagger Posse is back in town!”
“Really?” squealed her friend, earning looks from some of the older townfolk. “When did they arrive?”
“Just last night! Oh, that Jake is so handsome, isn’t he?” the first girl giggled. You heard someone snort, and turned to see a pretty girl a few rows back from you roll her eyes. She sat next to a handsome man who looked like he might be her brother and a pretty girl with dark hair and deep, brown eyes who smiled at him affectionately. The two girls continued, not paying any mind to the one who snorted.
“He is, but that Bradley isn’t so bad on the eyes either! It’s been horrible going this long without seeing all those handsome men walking around town,” said the second girl.
Her friend nodded enthusiastically. “You’re right. A month is simply too long.”
Before her friend could reply, the reverend made his way to the front to begin the service. The chatter died down as the reverend began to speak. It was a lovely service, and before you knew it, the hour had passed. The reverand gestured to Maverick, who stood up and turned to face the rest of the congregation.
“Mornin’, folks,” he said, earning a cacophony of “good mornings” from those around him. “You all know me, and you also know that we’ve been doin’ our best to get a school established here in Maverick. Well, I’m happy to announce that as of yesterday, our humble, little town finally has a new teacher!”
He gestured to you, and you stood up shyly, waving at the people surrounding you. Several people clapped and you could have sworn you heard a few people say “finally!” Maverick continued.
“Unfortunately, we still don’t have a schoolhouse built for our little critters, so for the foreseeable future, I’ll be looking for volunteers to help me build not only a schoolhouse, but a home for our wonderful new addition.”
“Thank you, Pete,” said the reverend as Maverick sat back down. “If anyone should have any questions for our new teacher, I believe she’ll be taking some time to get our sanctuary ready for school tomorrow morning. Eight o’clock, was it?”
“Yes,” you chirped. The reverend smiled.
“Eight o’clock tomorrow morning is when school will start. I hope to see many young, shining faces here on time ready to learn! That’s all I have for today. May God bless you all this fine Sunday.”
You sat back as the congregation began to file out of the sanctuary. Once everyone had left, you got up and walked up to the front. Behind the pulpit, you found the slate tablets that Penny had told you about earlier that morning. You grabbed a few of them and began to place them in the first few rows of the pews. You began to hum a little melody as you worked, allowing the sound to roll through you. Your mother had always been proud of your ability to sing.
“Like an angel here on earth,” she had said once. You had shied away from the compliment, but it never deterred you from enjoying the hobby.
“Amazing grace, how sweet the sound,” you sang as you walked back up towards the pulpit to grab more slates. “That saved a wretch like me.”
Turning, you moved to the other side of the aisle, repeating the task from before.
“I once was lost, but now am found,” you continued, turning back to grab the last few remaining tablets. Gathering them up in your arms, you turned. “Was blind, but now I see.”
Your finished the last note, looking up towards the door and nearly dropping the slates in your arms as you jumped. Standing in the doorway was a devistatingly handsome man. His skin was golden like it had been kissed by the sun itself, and chestnut brown hair curled at his forehead. His mustache sat above his lips that were curled into a small smile as he watched you with deep, brown eyes.
“Hey, little songbird. Don’t stop on my account,” he drawled, leaning against the doorframe. You didn’t say anything, to nervous to speak. This only seemed to amuse him, and he pushed off from the doorframe and started walking over towards you.
“That’s a pretty voice you got there,” he continued, causing you to tighten your hold on the tablets. “Maybe I can get a private show here soon.”
“C-c-can I help you?” you asked, cursing yourself for stuttering. The man hummed, coming to a stop in front of you. He was so tall, that you had to crane your head back in order to meet his gaze. He looked at you thoughtfully, biting his bottom lip before leaning down so close that his breath fanned over your face.
“That depends,” he smirked. “What are you offering?”
“I don’t,” you started, but your sentence was cut off by a squeak as the man cornered you against the wall by the pulpit.
“You gonna let me have a taste, darlin’?” He asked huskily, sliding his hand down to grip your skirt.
“We’re in a church!” You gasped, your brain struggling to catch up with what was happening. You put a hand on his chest, trying to use the tablets to push him back. He chuckled, taking them out of your hand and tossing them to the floor.
“I won’t tell if you won’t.”
Your pulse skyrocketed and your breath caught in your throat as he leaned in closer, close enough for you to see the green in his eyes.
“Oh, Rooster,” called a voice in a sing-song tone. You glanced over to see another tall, handsome man. This one, however, was blond and just a breath shorter than the one currently caging you in.
“‘M busy,” the man—Rooster—grumbled, softly stroking your cheek. You felt the skin in where he touched you blaze, and you tried to suppress the shudder that ran up your spine. Rooster’s smirk returned as he pressed in closer to you.
“Rooster?”
Rooster continued to ignore the man, cupping your jaw. He leaned in so that his lips hovered over yours, and you let out an involuntary whimper, feeling your resolve weaken.
“Don’t worry,” he cooed softly. “I’ve got you.”
“Bradley.”
“What, Hangman?” Snapped Rooster, Bradley, whirling around to glare at the man, thunder in his eyes. The man, Hangman, didn’t seem phased by the sudden hostility of his friend. In fact, he looked bored as he inspected his fingernails, propped up against the door frame where Bradley had just been minutes before.
“Well, Roo, I hate to interrupt your,” Hangman paused, casting you a quick glance before smirking, “fun, but we do have some things we need to take care of.”
Bradley didn’t say anything, still looking at Hangman with a thunderous look. Hangman cocked an eyebrow as if to challenge Bradley to argue.
“Have you even found Maverick?” Hangman asked exasperatedly.
“Maverick?” You questioned, your sense slowly coming back to you now that Bradley wasn’t quite so close. “He left already.”
Both men turned to look at you.
“Do you know where we can find him?” Asked Hangman, standing up straight now, hand on his hip.
“I believe he and Penny went home,” you said carefully, unsure of what these men wanted with your host.
“Well, thank you kindly, darlin’,” Hangman said, throwing you a wink before sauntering out the door. A moment passed and Bradley turned back to look at you, but your gaze was focused on your hands. Bradley’s hand reached out to cup your cheek again, pulling your face up to look at him. An unreadable expression was on his face as he studied you. His thumb gently stroked your bottom lip, and you once again found yourself having difficulty breathing and focusing on a single thought. His hand was so warm.
Bradley seemed to make up his mind about whatever it was he was thinking about, and he pulled away with another smirk. He turned and walked down the aisle of the church and out the door without another word to you. You shook your head in an attempt to clear it.
You quickly placed the rest of the tablets in the pews and waved goodbye to the reverend who had wandered back in from outside. You dragged your feet a little more than what was necessary as you made your way back to the house. You spotted several horses tied up by the gate outside, and you took a steadying breath to brace yourself for what, or who, was on the other side of the door. You stopped just outside and debated on whether or not it was too late to run off to another town. Deciding against it, you swung the door open before you lost your nerve. A group of six men were sprawled across varying pieces of furniture in the parlor, two of whom were now familiar to you. Both looked at you in surprise, but Bradley’s shock quickly turned into a lazy smirk.
“Well, hi Birdie,” he drawled, earning looks from both Maverick and Penny. “What’re you doing here?”

Master List of My Fics and WIPs
Been meaning to do this for ages, so here we go. All titles link through to the fics on AO3. All The Pieces of You (E, 66k - wip)
This is my main wip. Essentially it's a mad romp through history starting from 33AD and eventually working up to the present day (or at least up to the end of season 1). A mixture of smut, fluff and ridiculous historical adventures.
AO3 Summary:
Aziraphale had known he found Crowley attractive for a long time, but there was nothing wrong with that. The Almighty had done a very nice job when she’d made Crowley and surely appreciating the work of the Almighty was what angels were supposed to do? It was nothing more than that.
Except now Aziraphale knows what lust feels like and that might be a problem.
In The Beginning (E, 8.9k - complete)
In the beginning there was a garden and the Angel of the Eastern Gate and the Serpent of Eden decided that there are better things to do than stand around in the rain getting wet.
Shameless smut, in which Aziraphale and Crowley learn what all the fuss is about sex.
Better Than Today (E, 4k - complete)
Whenever they fucked Crowley said, “I love you.”
It would probably help if they talked about it, but somehow they just keep ending up having sex instead.
Smut with a fluffy ending.
Give In To Desire (E, 4.4k - complete)
Crawley hadn't actually meant for this to happen. He'd thought he'd tempt the angel into eating and the angel would maybe have a few bites and discover that it wasn't so bad after all. He hadn't expected to be setting himself up to be tempted into the sin of lust.
Just another fic speculating on what happened in the basement during the Job minisode, because you can never have too many of those, right?
A Day For Magic (T, 3.4k - complete)
In which there is a bench, a park and a coin, which leads to silliness and fluffiness all round.
Fic inspired by these kisses.
A Time of Wanting (T, <1k - complete)
Crowley wants.
He wants so badly and he's wanted for so long that it's a physical ache in his chest now. Short ficlet that's fluffy and happy, despite how the summary makes it seem. Also inspired by the kiss picture linked above.
Goodnight Angel (E, 14.4k - wip but also works as it is)
Post lockdown-phone-call fic.
Aziraphale had told him not to come over, but he was a demon and obviously he wasn't going to listen. Besides he was going out of his mind with boredom and going to see the angel was a much better idea than a long nap.
WIPs
Apart from my main wip All The Pieces of You I've also got a follow up to In The Beginning in the works and eventually I'll go back to Goodnight Angel as well. Apart from that I'm going to list my wips here and try to keep track of them with tags and get a bit better at posting about them. Some of these will probably never get written, especially since a few days ago there was only 12, then I scrapped one altogether taking it down to 11 and now somehow I'm up to 13. Too many ideas in my head and too many half writtten fics on my computer.
After The Swap
Blind date
Dance for Me
End Times
Entertain Me
Here's to the End Times (yep different to the above fic despite the similar working title)
It's You (This one is a one shot human AU and might be posted soon)
Run Away Together
Lockdown Lifted
So You Can Take It Off (Desperately want to finish this because it's different to anything else I've written)
South Downs
This Land of Ours (fits in the Pieces of You universe)
Waking Up With You (This is another one shot that is almost done)
Job (This is finished and posted as Give In To Desire - linked above - although technically there are more chapters in the works)

My Tanthamore Comfort Fics
We were talking about comfort fics in the Tanthamore discord and I realized I have too many for a normal sized reply, so here's a tumblr post instead. In no particular order i've reread these fics...maybe too many times.
I'm just gonna list em by author cause that's easier. Keep in mind we may have different definitions of the word comfort.
@commanderbuffy
650 ft2 - Ok so like envision these girls have been best friends for forever and they've been secretly pining for ages, no sense of personal space, they can read eachother like books AND they were roommates!
The Tanthamore Affair - This fic has everything, one bed, fake dating, celeb au, the fic that changed the meaning of a certain emoji and all the tropes you could want really
@badlance
We've got to find other ways to make it together - this one line says all you need to know
"It is the greatest irony of Jade Claymore’s life to be a certified genius who is nevertheless in love with an idiot."
@spybrarian
More Than Just Survival - as far as 5+1 fics go this one has me in a CHOKEHOLD
I scream at your chest for as long as I must
one night at the start of the end of the world
@ilovemyships (i think you need an AO3 account to read these gems)
you won't believe it (they think we're lovers)
don't wanna pressure (but friends don't kiss friends)
@acre-of-wheat - Acre's way with words should be studied
Network Connectivity Issues - I have never related to a character more than I relate to this Jade
The Dark
The Bite
@jlmichigan
Out of the Cuirass - one of the first tanthamore fics I ever read actually and I still come back to it every so often
@stbot
lay down your armor (come lie bare with me) - saintbot has a catalogue lemme tell ya but this one for tanthamore is just so heartwarming
@overkill-max
Escaping Fate - the Kit runs away fic that everyone needs
Dil3mma (idk their tumblr right now sorry)
A Sword And A Shield (And Everything In Between)
Deja-Brew - the loveliest coffee shop one shot
Jad3dEt3rnal (idk if they have a tumblr either)
This Daydream is Dangerous - cuddly vampire Jade, need I say more?
ana_chronistic (idk if they have a tumblr either x3)
Oops. I proposed. - fake dating x 100, fake proposal it's like fake dating to the next level and I love the growth of communication and pacing in this.
@barmaid-anon
do what you feel now
you want a good girl that does bad things (to you)
fulfill (an obligation) or keep (an arrangement)
we simply don't have time to unpack why these are comfort fics, we're just going to accept it and keep going.
@thecsquirrel
Sword and Shield - I love this look at what post S1 life could have been like for the gang, revisiting Nockmaar, seeing Galladoorn, getting into the evil Elora storyline with Graydon, spending more time with the Nelwyn and in the Wildwood it's just everything
@wigster07
What a pleasant surprise - a fic of one of my other comfort fics, I know it's like fic-ception in the best way possible. If you liked Tanthamore Affair I have an inkling this will be right up your alley
@isabrella @jade-claymore @allthefakepeople @resurrecho
those rumors they have big teeth - BAND AU need I say more? I don't need to but i'm going to, this fic has everything Kit and Jade in a band, Kit's leather pants, gay-ifying songs, MAMA MIA, totally gay best friends who have basically been dating for years but won't admit to it, Jade gets to be a bit problematic as a treat, inner band fighting, what more can you want?
@swashbucklery
meet you where the spirit meets the bones (tanthamore 90s werewolf au) - its a SERIES of these repressed gay DORKS and they're werewolves, there's such a charming way to how this author writes them I legit can't even with these two gays
@onlyshestandsthere
these walls come tumbling down - look, we don't have time to unpack why there's so many were-related supernatural esque fics on my comfort list and I know this is only 2 chapters in but I can already feel the comfort in all the hurt ok I dont even have to wait I already know i'm gonna be rereading this like monthly
I'm gonna have to stop there even though I know i'm still missing some! If someone asked me what my favorites are we'd be here all day XD

The Hearts of Gotham 4
Chapter 4 out of 7
Bruce makes the Justice League believe he has two hearts and is a manifestation of Gotham’s night to throw them off his secret identity, not trusting them. When the sound system breaks, he doesn’t come clean, but lies instead that he split into two to make Robin. From there it spirals as all the Robins make the lies grow and twist it in their own ways, until the truth comes out.
This fic is based on this post and inspired by Bouncing Baby Bat, or so the Justice League is led to believe... by EmpressGeek.
On AO3.
Ships: none
Warnings: Tim's self esteem issues
~~~~
Chapter 4: How Tim Tied It All Together
When Tim becomes Robin, Batman is no longer who he used to be. He is still paranoid of course, but he also grief stricken, angry, yet withdrawn. A shell of the Batman he once was.
He doesn’t want to introduce Tim to the Justice League at first. Wants to just tear the whole thing down and yell that he doesn’t want to do this anymore. That he just lost his son. That he’s had enough. That it’s not funny anymore. That it was never funny to start with.
However, whenever he tries to say something. He can’t. The words get stuck in his throat and all he can picture is Jason’s face as he whispered: ‘Are we- Are we pranking the Justice League?’ And he just can’t.
Bruce knows he has to introduce Tim to them, so that they know who they’re calling should something happen to him out there. But he still drags his feet about how he wants to do this.
A part of him wants to say fuck it and just tell them that there’s a new kid and that he’s been lying, too tired to care. But another part of him knows that then there will be questions, about the other Robins, if they were just kids too. And he’ll have to sit there and explain to Clark and Diana that he let his kid get killed. That he wasn’t on time to save him.
So, he shuts that first part of himself up and briefs Tim on what the story is and why he is meeting the League and when.
When Tim hears, he know this is important. The Robins before him have met the League and it is part of a bigger cover towards them.
Tim’s young mind whirls quickly, finding it logical that Batman has this added layer between him and the League. They operate differently and he knows how dangerous the League can be, the contingencies that Batman has made should it be necessary. Having a small human link, is a weakness to be exploited, so shrouding it in myth, makes it harder to do that.
It’s smart and he won’t let Batman down.
He knows Jason’s death is still a very sore wound, that is not likely to heal soon – it’s the whole reason he’s here – and that there is a wedge now between Batman and Dick. So, he doesn’t ask for advice from either of them and looks to the footage of the meetings with the old Robins and the Justice League in his own time, studying their interactions to prepare himself.
Thus, there is a drag to his feet as he quietly follows Batman into the Watchtower for the first time, the shoes he’s wearing still feeling too big to ever fill.
They enter a big room with a table, around which all the Justice League members are sitting. A few start to greet Batman, but they quickly also start to greet him. Seeing a new Robin is no longer a novelty to them and they are ready to welcome this newcomer.
“Hello, you must be the new Robin,” Superman floats over to shake his hand. “I’m Superman, nice to meet you.”
“I am. It’s nice to meet you too,” Tim says, trying to shake Superman’s hand the way Dick did.
Diana is also there, shaking his hand as they exchange introductions. She comments: “If I may ask, your predecessor was Robin shorter than the one before him. What city called for a hero? I have not heard of a new name popping up recently.”
Batman’s jaw tenses as most look to him for answers now, having notices his change in demeanor when the second Robin was mentioned.
Tim knows from his observations of the tapes that it is Robin, who gives the answers, while Batman stands quietly. So, he softly speaks up: “The second Robin was taken by the wrong parts of Gotham.”
The heroes that stand around them pause, some turning pale. Diana gasps: “No. He- He can’t die, can he?”
“He can be lost,” Tim answers, watching how Batman’s hands clench, hoping he won’t be too mad for all he’s about to say. “Not all his pieces returned home. The city gives us shape and life, but we can also be taken by it.”
As he talks, he calls back on as much as what Jason said, since he is the one that solidified the lore of the Robins. He created the means to be interchanged. And Tim is going to do his favorite hero proud.
“When he became Robin, the moon was waxing. Now the moon is waning,” Tim says. “Gotham is getting dark now. The light is less big. I’m less big.”
He is actually pretty close to Jason’s age when he started, but he knows that he’s smaller than average. If he calculated right, he can pass for at least two years younger. It fits with the story he’s creating for his Robin, a lesser version of those before him. The Robin to a grimmer Batman and a less bright Gotham.
Everyone is now looking worried and that’s good. Tim wants the League to be a little bit worried, so that they’ll keep a closer eye on Batman. He needs everyone to keep him on the rails while he processes and this way Tim is subtly enlisting help.
However, he also memorized what Jason said about Batman changing and how that means something has happened. He doesn’t need them to worry so much that they’ll come into Gotham unannounced.
So, he gives them a smile, hoping it will be close to what the other Robins did. Unintentionally, it’s as creepy as Dick’s smile had been.
“Don’t worry,” he says, maybe a bit on the nose, but, oh well, he doesn’t do improv theater. “The night is still the same, the light is just less, so there is more darkness to make up Batman. He’s working on it. We both are. We’ll get used to our way of being Batman and Robin as we are now.”
That is apparently Batman’s limit.
A hand comes down on Tim’s shoulder, it’s heavy, but Tim doesn’t react. He is used to Batman’s more brisk forms of connection, how he’s grown more distant than how he was with Jason. Tim gets it, he’s not his son, just a placeholder.
“Let’s go to the Cave, Robin,” Batman says and he doesn’t crack on the name. Progress. “They’ve met you now.”
“Oh, don’t go yet, Batman,” Flash tries to go for a little more lighthearted as he attempts to get Batman to stay. They likely all noticed how he’s been around less.
Diana nods, saying gently: “Yes, there is no need to hurry home.”
Batman looks like he might be convinced, but then J’onn adds: “We can help you look out for Robin,” and that is the wrong thing to say, Tim knows it as he hears it.
Had Batman gotten help from the Justice League, Jason could have lived. Had Batman thought to call out, Tim might not be standing here.
“No, Gotham needs us,” he tells them instead and a part of Tim hopes that there is an Arkham outbreak so that Batman can punch out a little more of his grief and their cover will be strengthened more.
It’s the only time, Tim meets the Justice League as Robin. He never trains with them, never convinces Batman to take him with him to the Watchtower again. He meets them, because it is necessary and never again until he’s Red Robin.
As Red Robin, Tim truly grows into the lore that they’re creating, managing to find ways to use it to his advantage.
By then the Robin mantle has ping ponged around and Tim has mourned how he’s been forced to give up being Robin. It wasn’t easy, but it’s what has to be done and he’s always done it. Besides, he quite likes his mantle as Red Robin now.
And he doesn’t mind tricking his teammates either. Out of all of them, he’s the one that has the worst of B’s paranoia, so having this makes him feel more in control about what they do and don’t know about him. It’s a safety measure.
He is also gleeful to discover that he can use it to get his way and Dick can’t get on his case about it, because then he’ll give the whole thing away.
“Don’t worry,” he tells them when they look at him with concern. “My body doesn’t react the same as yours to caffeine, this is totally safe.”
“It’ll be safer for me to go alone,” he lies another time. “As a manifestation, it’s less likely that this demon thing will kill me. It’ll be worse if you’re there.” Like he doesn’t just think they’re all shit negotiators and he’s better off without them in the background to ruin things.
Little things that make leading his team easier for him. Making so he doesn’t have to explain himself or apologize for his bad habits. It’s quite a nice change of pace and he doesn’t mind in the slightest.
As a little bit of pettiness to the demon spawn that has taken his spot after Steph, he tells those that ask that one Robin wasn’t enough anymore for the beast that is Gotham. In a dire hour of need, he had handed over in some Robin parts, but not all, he had evolved and a new one had grown. The two of them having to run around to balance Gotham again.
It can’t be further from the truth, they don’t work together well and while Gotham is still a dark entity, two Robins can nearly be considered overkill. Especially when you know of all the other heroes that run around, still in the shadows.
However, he doesn’t care about the truth much. Let everyone think that he is the evolved Robin, that he grew, that he still matters to Gotham. Let them think that Damian is the Robin, who couldn’t do it by himself, who needed an extra hand.
Tim is used to twisting the narrative until he makes sense, until no one wonders how he is the one who made it here. He has always had big shoes to fill, let someone else carry that burden for a change.
~~
A/N:
Okay, promise only happy vibes again after this one, but Tim is just a bit of a sad character, especially when he just became Robin and when he had to hand over the mantle again (though the latter has been all Robins), so it was a little difficult to make it happy. I tried, didn’t work out.
Author Note: Here's part 7 of Sometimes All You Need (A Getaway Car). This chapter was my first time attempting to write an argument and I hope I did it justice. This is the third of the truly angsty chapters I have planned for this series. I hope you like it.
This chapter is inspired by Dagny's Love You Like That. I highly suggest you listen to the song while you read.
I also have about a million thanks for the lovely @desert-fern (@ferns-fics) for beta-reading this for me! Also! Look at my new watermark! @cassiemitchell made it for me and it's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen!
"What do you mean you're going back to work in three weeks?" Your voice sounds incredulous and pained.
"I mean, I'm going back to work in three weeks." Jake sounds infuriated with you, and a part of you understands why - this is the fourth time you’re having the same discussion.
He doesn't seem to understand how your world had imploded in seconds when you'd found out he'd been hurt. Jake had been in a coma for three weeks! He'd been so severely injured that you weren't sure at times if he'd ever recover from the trauma. You still wake up in the middle of the night with nightmares. Sometimes it's still the same nightmare you had in the hospital. But more and more it's you waking up to find Jake cold and clammy in the bed next to you.
All the while Jake slumbers peacefully next to you. He doesn’t seem to understand the emotional toll his near loss has had on you. Maybe that’s partially your fault. You’ve hidden your exhaustion from him, resolving to be his rock. So instead you drive him to each doctor's appointment and every physical therapy appointment, masking your worry by showing your love for him in every way you can.
"I don't get you at all. Why can't you understand?" Jake's glaring at you, thin and pale standing across the island in your kitchen. His eyes are molten emerald, glinting dangerously in the warm lights.
"Why can't you understand?!" Heat crawls its way up your throat, uncomfortably prickling behind your eyes.
"You nearly died, Jake." You can't help how your voice breaks as you say that word.
"And?" He can't sound so matter of fact about this - like it is an everyday occurrence. Maybe it is - for him - but it's not for you. When you can't get your dry throat to cooperate, he continues.
"This is what you signed up for. I'm a Naval Aviator." He's breathing raggedly before he spits out, "Or did you forget that over the months we were apart? Did you forget that you'll never be my first priority? The Navy comes first. Flying comes first."
You feel like a marionette with all of its strings cut at his words. You can't believe this is Jake, your Jake, saying the words - the man you love, who claims to love you. You've made him your top priority since he's been injured. You haven't even seen Callie since the squadron got back. Jake has been your only focus. His words also send rage flowing through your veins.
"So that's how this works, right? It's perfectly alright for me to make sacrifices, to drive you everywhere, do everything for you when you're hurt, but you can't even hear me out?" A tear drips down your cheek as you look up at Jake. "I just want you to listen to me. To hear my fears, my worries and tell me that everything will be okay."
"But I guess that is an ephemeral hope. I'm not your first priority right? That's the Navy isn't it? What happened to, 'I'm looking for forever with you, gorgeous'?" You don't know when you moved around the island to face him, but you've got one finger pointed at his sternum. "I guess I'm just another fuck for you then. So what then? Why are you even here?"
You can physically see the regret in Jake's eyes as he tries to reach for you. But you slap his hands away before he can get close. Your rage is taking the wheel now.
"Why aren't you back on base? Go back to killing yourself with workouts before you're ready. Go back to having a multi-million dollar missile strapped to your ass going faster than the speed of sound." You ignore the pain in his eyes or how he gapes at you for your words. Then the anger takes over his face. His jaw tightens and his eyes glare even more.
"You want me back on base, gorgeous?" You can't help the way your fingers reach out to him as he whirls away, striding away as fast as he can.
"You got what you wanted then. I thought you knew what I wanted. I thought we were in this until the end. I saw myself growing old with you. So why? Why can't you just listen to me?" Jake's out of breath, his shoulder moving jerkily, protesting his movements, as you follow listlessly behind him as he jams his feet into a pair of sneakers and shrugs on a jacket.
You can't breathe. Each word cuts so deep that you're half sure that when you look down you'll see blood pouring out of you. But you're left standing in the yawning doorway as Jake gets into his truck and drives away. Every sound is muffled. Once again you feel adrift, tossed aside like you don't matter. There's no way Jake thinks so little of you. There's no way.
You're not sure how long you stand there, your heart bleeding as it sits perched in your hands. What did you do? Months of fostering an epic love and it's really that easy to forget? To forget all of the best parts of Jake? Jake makes you feel like no other man in the room. You can talk about anything and everything with him. And his eyes? They make you melt like ice-cream on the sunniest summer day.
Please, you beg yourself. Please, let cooler heads prevail. Please let Jake have just gone for a drive around the block. Please let him come home. But as the hours pass and the sun sets out the kitchen window, your unease grows. You’ve taken to keeping your phone barely a finger’s breadth away from you, praying that he’ll call. Your mind keeps running around in circles, the worry and fear preying on your every thought. When your phone rings from the coffee table, you nearly sprint to it, even when you're barely a foot away.
"Hello?" It's a number you don't recognize.
"Is this Gorgeous?" It's a male voice, deep.
"Yeah." You clutch the phone tighter to your ear.
"I've got a Jake Seresin here. You're the top number in his contacts. Can you come pick him up?” You scramble for a piece of paper.
“Yeah, I can come get him. Where is he?” Your voice is tight with worry as you listen intently to the address spilling down the line to you. When you put the address into your phone, it’s to a small bar halfway across the city. Out in the driveway, your car is the only one in its spot - meaning that Jake drove his truck there. You sit in complete silence during the entire cab ride to the bar.
It’s a seedy little joint, trapped between an alley and a strip club. The one, lone street light in the parking lot flickers with a dim, dirty yellow light. There aren't many cars in the parking lot, but you could pick Jake's pickup truck out on sight any day. The bar falls silent when you walk through the doors. The air stinks of unwashed flesh and spilled beer. A smoky haze lays over the entire building as you make a single-minded path to the bar counter. You try desperately to avoid thinking about where you’re stepping, what you’re stepping in, as you crane your neck looking for Jake.
It takes you a bit to find him, slumped as he is against a wall staring listlessly into the glass in front of him. The glass itself is chipped and clouded, but it’s no less cloudy than Jake’s expression. You walk forward, your movements hesitant and unsure but Jake doesn't look up until your sneakered feet are in his line of sight.
"What do you want?" You've never heard Jake like this. It's a tone that's all anger and spite as he downs the mouthful of amber liquid at the bottom before plunking the glass down on the bartop with a harsh thud.
"The bartender called. I'm still at the top of your emergency call list, Jay." You carefully cradle his face in your hands, tipping it up so you can see just how drunk Jake is.
"Huh." Every word sends whiskeyed breath into your face. "You're not m'gorgeous. Let go'a me. My gorgeous girl is home waitin' for me." He slaps your hands away as you try to get him to recognize you. You pay his tab before collecting his credit card and pocketing his phone. By the time you're back to Jake, he's quieted. You sit on a nearby barstool to wait. You have to sober him up, so first, you flag down the bartender.
"Can you switch him to water please? And keep it coming?" Your smile is forced when he hands Jake a tumblr full of water. You settle down to watch eagle eyed for the next hour as Jake steadily downs glass after glass of water. When he starts listing in the seat, this time because of sleep, you finally intervene.
Your sigh is soft and sad as you drag his arm around his shoulder. "C'mon cowboy. Let's get you home, yeah?"
Jake's mostly compliant, if uncoordinated as he drapes himself across your back. He's a far cry from his usual muscular self, in part due to lost muscle tone from his stint in the hospital, and you can feel every inch of his lighter weight draped over you as you stagger your way out to his pickup truck.
It takes you far longer than you care to think about to get Jake buckled into the passenger seat. His cheeks are flushed as his green eyes track your every movement slowly.
"Where're you takin' me?" His voice is all Texan drawl as you start the truck up.
"I'm taking you home, Cowboy." He doesn't seem to recognise you any better now than he did earlier.
"But y'dont know where I live. And I'm not goin' home with you. I only go home with my darling girl." You can't help your fond sigh as you drive carefully home. Even drunk and in the middle of the worst - and only, thus far - argument of your relationship, Jake's still loyal to you.
You're silent as you carefully drive home. Jake keeps up a token protest, grumbling under his breath as he sits in the passenger seat with his face smashed against the glass. When you pull the truck into the driveway and turn it off, it's to the sight of him snoring brokenly against the glass.
It's late, well past midnight and Jake's entire body is still recovering. He hurts just napping on your overstuffed sofa nowadays. So you carefully wake him up and help him stagger through your house. A couple of glasses of water more and you have a nearly sober, awake boyfriend to handle.
It's as you're gently tugging a fresh t-shirt over his head that Jake finally speaks again.
"Why'd you come get me, huh, Gorgeous?" You carefully cradle his head, fingers gentle as they trace over the still tender scars under his hair.
"Why wouldn't I, Jay?" His hands find your waist, sliding under your shirt to map out your skin.
"There wasn't ever a doubt that I'd come find you." You kiss his hair, pulling him in closer.
"Why?" You've never heard Jake sound so lost.
"Because I love you. One fight could never change that. I was so angry at you that I let my mouth get away with me. I'd do anything for you. I'd do everything for you." Your voice is hushed, choked by the tears you're valiantly trying to keep at bay.
"If you love me, then why can't you understand? Flying -" he clears his throat before saying the words, "flying is everything to me. I don't know who I am if I'm not a naval aviator."
"I never asked you to stop flying, Jake. I just." You take in a deep breath, trying and failing to corral all of your warring emotions. "I guess I just want you to be safe. To take a bit more time to heal before you head back up there. You’re my everything, Jay. When I got that call in the middle of the night saying you’d been hurt it felt like my world had rocked off of its axis. I was lost.”
Your sniffle is soft as Jake tugs you even closer. “A-and I hate fighting with you Jay. I know this is our first one, but I already hate it.”
Your breathing is ragged as you card your fingers through Jake’s soft short hair. “I just don’t want to lose you. Lose what we have. I want at least 40 years with you, you know? It’s non-negotiable.”
“My flying, baby doll? It isn’t going to change that. I promise.” His words should fill you with relief, but instead, all you’re filled with is more worry.
“You can’t promise that, Jake. You just can’t.” You pull away from him, looking out the big bay window in your bedroom with your back to the man who holds your entire heart. Jake’s thin and worn, his reflection and the light over emphasizing the bags under his eyes.
“Baby Doll -” You can’t even look at him right now. Your stomach is flip-flopping unpleasantly, all of your emotions clogging your throat and muffling your voice. You don’t think you can even look at his reflection without crying. Not tonight, not right now. You startle at the feeling of Jake’s hands on your skin. It’s something you’ve never done before. You’re just so on edge tonight that you feel like even your skin doesn’t fit right on your body. But Jake’s arms? Your body knows, no matter how tense your mind is or how wrapped up it is in your thoughts, that you belong there. You slump against his chest, turning in his arms until your ear is to his heart and your hands are flat against the warm skin of his back.
“Baby Doll?” Jake sounds so tired, even as his arms curl tighter around your frame. Each breath he takes sounds like the sweetest music you’ve ever heard.
“Jay?” Your voice is a barely suppressed sob.
“You scared me so badly.” Your sniffle is wet as you nuzzle further into his chest as you tell him exactly what he means to you.
“You’re so deeply entrenched in my life, Jay. You’re my heart. My whole soul. It’s only been a little more than a year since we met and I don’t even know what it means to not love you. I feel like I’ve been waiting my whole life for you. How?” You’re struggling to breath, your lungs not computing the oxygen entering them.
“How could I possibly let you go when it feels like I’ve just found you?” Your fingers grip tighter to his skin. You’re sure you’re hurting him but he never complains and just clutches you closer, his hand cupping the back of your head as you wet his t-shirt with your tears.
“You’re not letting go, Baby Doll. I’m not letting go of you either.” His voice is just as choked up as yours is.
“You’re just as deep under my skin, gorgeous. I wish I could tell you that I’ll be safer, that I’ll do better. But you were right, earlier. It’s not fair for me to expect you to make all of the sacrifices. It’s about time I made some too. Can you look at me, sweetheart? Please?” His hands are gentle, feather-light as they tip your chin up until your teary eyes meet his own.
“Tell me the word, sweetheart. And I’ll do it. I’ll quit the Navy. My contract’s up in a few months anyways. I’ll apply for desk duty until it’s up. For you, I can remake myself. Just say the word.”
“How could I ask you to do that? Wasn’t it your dream to fly?” You can’t believe what you’re hearing. Your eyes are wide as you gaze up at Jake.
“Baby doll, my dreams changed the minute I met you. You.” His hands rise to brush the tears from your face. “You’re my new dream. Forever and always. And this dream? It’s one I’m going to keep alive for as long as I still have breath in my lungs. My heart? It’s yours. So is my life. The decision, my gorgeous girl, is yours.” Your gasp is soft, but the way you smash your lips to Jake’s is anything but.
You pour your entire heart into the kisses you give Jake, breathing out your love against his cheeks, lips, and neck as you push him back towards the bed. Jake goes willingly, letting you strip the shirt off before settling yourself lightly in his lap.
“What’s this for, huh, baby?” His hands slide under your shirt easily, gripping the soft skin at your waist like they were made to be there.
“I love you, Jake. Do I need a reason to show you how much?” Your smile is soft and slightly mischievous as you ghost your lips gently against his.
“Not as far as I’m concerned, pretty girl.” The look in his eyes sends heat shooting through you as you capture his mouth again.
His tongue is wet against yours, plundering your mouth as he takes back control. His hands feel like brands over your skin as they drag you even closer. You're so wholly occupied by Jake that you barely notice your shirt landing on the floor or how your bra joins it seconds later. The next thing you feel is Jake's lips wrapping around your peaked nipples. Your resulting moan is high pitched and breathy.
Even when you're on top of him he drives you wild. In no time at all he has you writhing on top of him, completely bare. Your cunt is so wet that it's soaking a wet spot into his jeans. Jeans that you need off. It's been far too long since you've had Jake. Between his exhaustion and your own, and his recovery, all physical intimacy went out of the window months ago.
But now? You need him like you need air to breathe. His cock is already drooling precum as you work it over. When his head tips back, you take the opportunity to mark up the golden column of Jake's throat, pulling back only when there's a bruise blossoming against his throat.
"God, pretty girl. What're you trying to do, huh? Kill me?" Your resulting squeak is embarrassingly high-pitched as he manhandles you until you're ass up on the bed. "Or d'you want me so bad that you'd do anything to get my attention?"
You'd accuse Jake of being cruel if his hands weren't so tender against your fever-hot skin, your arousal so potent that it's practically emanating off of you in waves. The first press of his cock into you has you nearly sobbing in relief.
"Mmm." Jake's voice is a guttural growl against your shoulder as he pulls you in against your back is to his chest.
"My pretty girl. So wet and ready for me. Feels like forever since I've had this pretty pussy. Is it still mine, baby?" Jake's voice is all sex and smoke in your ear as his cock fills you up in a way no other ever has.
"It's yours, Jay." Your moans fill the bedroom as he fucks so slowly and deliberately into you that you can feel every inch of him in your throbbing, sopping wet core. "Always yours."
Your mind is already foggy. Jake's making you lose your thoughts, trapping your tongue with the constant, relentless onslaught of his cock as it hits your sweet spot every time with unerring precision. He already has you babbling, droplets of sweat dripping down your temples as the temperature in the room ratchets up. All you can think of, all you want to think of is Jake. He's your everything.
The way he's rutting into you feels like a brand burning into your skin. He's ruined you for all other men. Not that you'd ever think of ever letting anyone else into your heart. A part of you loves the thought. That you're Jake's and that he's yours. That same part of you longs for a marker, something to show to the world that he's yours. But for now, you can wait.
Honestly, you want something else just a bit more now, and that is to cum. With Jake, because of Jake. The pleasure that's been making you tongue-tied and cock-drunk, dumb except for the thought of Jake has been rapidly tightening the band in your gut. You want to cum, no, you need to. But you don't not until Jake's hands find your breast and your clit, rolling your nipple and rubbing harshly at your clit. That's the final straw. You cum hard, harder than you have in a long time, the pleasure making you see stars and fogging up your vision.
You come back to yourself draped over Jake's chest.
"Jay?" Your voice is rough as you murmur his name.
"Yeah, gorgeous?" He sounds half asleep as his big hand cups your bare ass.
"I don't want you to quit the Navy. I'm going to be an Admiral's wife one day, you know?" You grin into his skin as he squeezes your ass.
"An Admiral's wife, huh?" You can feel his smirk as he kisses the top of your head.
"You bet. I can't wait for us to be introduced to everyone as Admiral and Mrs. Seresin." You're smiling from ear to ear as you kiss Jake this time. It's an uncoordinated, sloppy, messy kiss, too much teeth and tongue but you love it anyways.
"I love you, my gorgeous girl." You can't help your smile as you fall asleep in his arms. Admiral and Mrs. Seresin. You're sure there isn't a sweeter title that you could ever hold.
fic writer meme
thank you [checks notes] @megafaunatic, @cairoscene, @englishsub, @yuebings, and @cafecliche for the tags ilu
1. How many works do you have on Ao3? 15! which is solidly 14 more than i ever expected to have on there when i made the account
2. What's your total Ao3 word count? 277,844
3. What fandoms do you write for? on ao3: mdzs/cql, tgcf, shl, and dc. in groupchats/dms/my own head i’m running wild all over the place
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos? 🐉 this river runs to you 💍 i’ll have you and you’ll have me 🪐 i will be chasing a starlight ⚔️ you’re the trouble that i always find 🌊 a wave crashes to shore
5. Do you respond to comments? not often; i have made multiple attempts to start replying regularly but all have eventually failed in the face of me desperately wanting to show my earnest and genuine appreciation for each comment vs. wanting to hide my blushing face under a pillow every time. also, because of who i am as a person, each time i sat down to do it i ended up spending hours making little progress and eventually decided that i will make an effort to spend those hours writing or commenting on other fics instead. i am honored by each and every one though!!!
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? while i tend to write angst it is always firmly of the “with a happy ending” sort. the one exception is my shortest fic (originally posted on twitter) never been away so long, which is more of an ambiguous/open ending with implied angst. i dooooo outline the eventual happy ending in the endnotes, though. also as it CURRENTLY stands buy back the secrets ends on one hell of an angsty note, but there are two more chapters in the works to fix that.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? despite the wangxian star trek au having like 20k of deliriously happy post-misunderstanding sex, i think trrty has to have the happiest ending because not only does the fic end happily, but there are also multiple very happy codas in which wwx gets a good night’s sleep, finally gets to bang his dragon boyfriend, and, my personal fav, one by aubreyli where wangxian go flying in a thunderstorm.
8. Do you get hate on fics? not so far, for which i am grateful but mostly lucky.
9. Do you write smut? occasionally; on ao3 there’s the aforementioned trrty coda, plus the aforementioned cowritten wangxian pon farr sequence 💪
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you have written? hmm, i’m not opposed to crossovers—i’ve read some really fun ones (recent fav crossover read here)—but i’d have to be really compelled by both source materials and have a very clear vision for how they interact to want to write one myself. i’ve written a few fandom fusions (aforementioned wangxian star trek au; i also started a wangxian dragon age au but again, no dragon age characters were going to show up, just the world/setting) but no full-on crossovers. i did have one partially drafted wangxian fic that was going to have a hua cheng deus ex machina, alas.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? not that i’m aware of! it’s not something i really go looking for/concern myself with, but so far, like with fandom hate, i’m grateful to not have encountered it.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated? yes! my wangxian wedding fic was translated to russian.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? i co-wrote seventy thousand words of published fic with @feyburner! and probably two hundred thousand words of unpublished fic and outlines and story ideas just for fun. even when we aren’t co-writing we tend to talk through our individual fics with each other so we’re pretty in sync when it comes to writing. i also spent like a year in @cairoscene’s DMs concocting whole outlines/zerodrafts for batfam fics together that i still cherish and reread (notable favs: tim drake ella enchanted au, concept where the waynes are cursed to suddenly feel nothing but apathy about tim and he has to deal with that, story where robin!tim gets de-aged and oops red hood is the first one to show up…). i’d say the OCBFEU is fic-adjacent and cowritten by a group of us. also shoutout to the mdzs threadfic @cafecliche and i brainstormed/zerodrafted where lan qiren gets cursed into an owl and post-cql wei wuxian is the one who unknowingly saves him.
14. What's your all time favorite ship? oh yeah it’s [loud truck goes by]
15. What is a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? cyborg!wwx…i still think of you fondly. the only ao3 fic i’ve ever posted knowing i probably wouldn’t finish it but wanted to share just for fun.
16. What are your writing strengths? pangs… mining little character details for humor (or, more often, for more pangs)… i also think i’ve really improved my action writing/pacing over the last few years.
17. What are your writing weaknesses? i write actual drafts/prose fairly slowly, which can be frustrating for me. also like @yuebings i often get very caught up in trying to perfect one small part of a draft before moving on. ummmm describing outfits/settings for reasons other than immediate plot-relevant details, i’m terrible at that + remembering to do it—i literally make myself do a What Are We Looking At Here Pass while revising sometimes.
18. Thoughts of writing dialogue in another language in fics? i’m not totally sure what this question is asking tbh, but it’s something i think can be done incredibly well—and, like with many things in storytelling, it’s the sort of thing where if you don’t actually speak the second language you need to be willing to put in work beyond a cursory google to try to achieve what you’re doing, and be willing to admit if it’s beyond your capabilities. i really like how the portuguese dialogue in bbts ended up and that’s 100% because @tigerjpg translated it for me and also already understood the scene/concept/characters; without them i would have found a different way to approach that scene. also, stylistically, i personally like when dialogue in other languages isn’t italicized unless there’s a real reason for it to be.
19. First fandom you wrote for? oh it was [a second loud truck whooshes by]
20. Favorite fic you have written? right now it’s bbts, because i think it’s also the fic i’ve had the most fun writing. trrty, though, will always hold a special place in my heart.
and i tag! @tlumeti, @burins, @smilebackwards, @bonesbuckleup, @hearteyeshayley, @sonosvegliato
Misfit Toys - Part 3
Part 1 here. Part 2 here.
Cross-posted to AO3 here.
Tokath (ST:TNG) x Reader
[A/N: This is smut adjacent, so 18+ ONLY, MINORS DNI!!!]
Warnings: Interspecies romance, Human/Romulan romance, implied interspecies sex, implied Human/Romulan sex, mutual pining, they're idiots who think it's unrequited, it's VERY requited, flirting, some almost kisses, getting lokblocked, literally everyone can tell they're in love except them, they are the last people to find out about each other's feelings.
~*~
I hadn't needed Tokath's crutch in nearly a month, but it had earned a place of honor. Resting lovingly on a bookshelf in my bedroom, it served as a reminder of the progress I'd made...and of the fact that I now had somewhere that I belonged.
After all this time, it still felt strange to know that I had a home this amazing. The reaction to the news that I'd decided to stay instead of boarding the transport and leaving the Carraya system had been so joyful on the part of my new friends that I'd been moved to tears. None of them had been irritated that I'd chosen to remain with them.
Ta'lana even clapped a hand on my shoulder and grinned as she offered me a permanent position helping her concoct her salves. I accepted, of course. How could I not? Her companionship was so easy and natural that I'd have been a fool to refuse. Not to mention I owed her and Tokath my life for healing me after the crash.
Speaking of Tokath, as soon as he gave me permission to stay, I felt as though a weight had been lifted from my chest. There was no longer a lingering feeling of guilt and selfishness resonating through me every time I stole a glance at him. Oh sure, I was still on the verge of berating myself for behaving like a schoolgirl with a crush, but I'd realized that since I was now a permanent resident in this settlement, I had every right to live however I chose. If I wanted to bask in the warmth of the Romulan Commander's smiles, then that was exactly what I'd do.
I was afforded that opportunity quite often. More often than not, we managed to sneak in a little time together in the mornings before the day truly got started. Even if it was just enough time for us to share a cup of tea and breakfast, Tokath and I always seemed to gravitate toward each other.
There were still plenty of mornings where we woke up in each other's arms on the sofa in his study, and those were admittedly my favorites. He was nearly always awake before I was, but he never moved to get up first. The lingering caresses left on my skin before the break of dawn made me wish that I was a more courageous person. More than once I came incredibly close to blurting out my feelings for him in those slow, gentle morning hours. It was a wonder that he hadn't yet noticed.
There was definitely a slight shift in our relationship when I begged him to allow me to stay, though I couldn't define what it was. Our interactions were just as they were before but the burden on his shoulders seemed...lighter, somehow, despite the addition of a new member of the community. Maybe he just liked having a friend with a new perspective to discuss...
If only he knew how much that new friend wanted to kiss him when the morning sunlight poured in through the study window and glittered in his eyes. Resting atop his sturdy chest, half-dazed and half-witted from having just woken up, the temptation was almost overwhelming most mornings. Instead, I would simply nuzzle farther into his chest or the crook of his neck and breathe in his scent until I was certain I could trust myself to look into his eyes again.
One of those mornings, the rain cascaded down, splattering against the windows and creating a soothing rhythm against the roof. I was loathe to get up, and Tokath seemed even less inclined to do so, until a knock sounded at the door.
With matching pair of begrudging sounds, the two of us sat up, and Tokath called for whoever it was to come in. Belatedly, I realized how bedraggled we must look. M'Ven took a single step inside, saw our mussed hair and state of dress, and blushed as he delivered his message.
"My apologies for the intrusion, sir, but I thought you might like to know that your daughter's shuttle has just entered sensor range. She should be here within the hour." Almost as soon as he'd finished speaking, M'Ven tossed me a friendly wink and left us to our own devices.
A joyful smile spread across the Commander's lips as he turned to me.
"You and Ba'el would get along so well! Would you like to come with me to greet her?" He looked so hopeful. How could I possibly refuse? Without a single thought, I reached up and brushed a few errant strands of hair behind his ear. When his hand covered mine against the side of his face, I realized how close we still were to each other.
Oh, the urge to kiss him was back stronger than ever!
"I wouldn't want to intrude on your time with her–"
"Hush, e'lev. You could never intrude," he said, "and if you're not uncomfortable with the notion, I'd love for you to be there."
Tokath's hand kept mine firmly in place while I took a deep breath.
"I'd be honored." If I thought his smiles had been beautiful before, I'd clearly never seen him this utterly filled with joy. Tugging me into a crushing hug, the Commander let out a relieved breath. Did he really think I'd refuse?
After having bathed and changed into clean clothes, we arrived at a clearing in the woods that Tokath called the 'landing strip' just in time to see his daughter's shuttle touch down. The rain had stopped just a few minutes before, giving way to a thick, murky fog. Almost as soon as the shuttle's engines cut off, he was striding toward the door of the small craft.
This must've been something of a routine for them, because the young woman practically threw herself into his arms, sending the pair into a fit of giggles. I hung back just a bit to give them space. Despite Tokath's earlier protests, I was determined not to intrude on their reunion.
"You should've told me you were coming! I'd have prepared a welcome party," he said, and at her protests, I turned my attention to Ba'el's ship, trying to give them some semblance of privacy. The vessel seemed to be Klingon in design, so I assumed she'd acquired it or borrowed it while on the homeworld that she'd gone to explore - Tokath told me all about the incident with a Starfleet officer and the minor revolt that led to some of the younger members of the colony striking out on their own. More power to them. It took a lot to leave the only place you'd ever known in search of entirely new places.
"Oh, hi!" Ba'el's cheerful voice sounded, and I turned my head to meet her smile with one of my own. I gave a little wave as the pair walked over.
"Ah, this is our newest resident," Tokath said introducing me. Rather than a more subdued greeting as I'd expected, Ba'el glanced between her father and myself, then wrapped me in a tight hug. I'd expected apprehension or maybe something a bit more confrontational, but, really, that was silly. She was Tokath's daughter, and he was one of the kindest people I'd ever met. It only stood to reason that his daughter would be at least partially similar in temperament.
"This place is so secluded! How in the stars did you end up here?" She asked as she pulled back and grasped my shoulders.
"Well, it's a long story–"
"One that even I have not yet managed to coax from her," Tokath cut in as he wrapped an arm around my waist and smiled playfully down at me.
"–but it's not a terribly interesting one. I boarded the wrong transport at the wrong time, that's all," I finished with a shrug, ducking my head to escape the warmth of his gaze before I combusted completely.
"Oh, the 'wrong time' was it? And here I thought you liked it here, e'lev." He was teasing me, I knew he was, but I still didn't want him to have the wrong impression.
"No, no, that's not what I meant. I love living here! This place is the best thing that ever happened to me. I-I just–" Tokath's gentle, rolling laughter engulfed me just as his arms did, cutting off my rambling protests.
"Do you really think I don't know how you feel about that by now?" When I simply buried my face in his tunic and made a noncommittal sound, he gave me a nice, big squeeze. "Come on. Let's all get back to the compound before we freeze in this dreary weather."
--
Dinner that night was a joyful affair. Stepped up from the usual fare into something more celebratory, the whole colony was ecstatic to welcome back one of their own, even if it was only for a short time. Though she was only planning on staying for a couple of weeks, Ba'el's presence brought a sparkle into the hall. Her lightheartedness and genuine wonder about the things she'd seen in her travels brought smiles to everyone's faces - including a rather pointed attentiveness from Centurion M'Ven that I noticed.
Eventually, the meal drew to a close, but before Tokath could protest, his daughter looped her arm around mine and stole me away into the quiet evening air. Stopping at the same little pond where her father had first told me of the transport, Ba'el tugged me down next to her on the bench to sit with her. We were both silent for a few moments, watching the water ripple in the bond as a slight breeze caressed its surface. When she spoke, her voice was so soft that it almost slipped away amidst the trees' rustling leaves.
"When I was little, my parents used to bring me here every day. I'd run around and play, and they'd sit here together on this bench. On the days when I didn't need others for the silly games I played, they kept their own company. Sometimes they talked, sometimes my father would read her a book, and sometimes, if the atmosphere was right, they'd end up roaring with laughter over some joke they'd shared," she murmured. A nostalgic little smile stretched her lips, and a far away sort of look settled itself firmly onto her face. "When I got older, they trusted me to come here alone, and I took to exploring the gardens. I knew every rock and tree - they were my friends, as silly as that sounds. I miss this place more than any other when I'm off exploring the galaxy."
I listened carefully, and a wave of gratitude washed through me for the glimpse she was giving me into both her past and her father's. It must've taken a lot for her to share something so personal with me.
"The last time I was home, M'Ven saw me come here. He followed me one night...gave me a bouquet of his own hybrid flowers - he tends them religiously, so you couldn't have missed them," she said, and with a conspiratorial lean in, she continued. "He's asked me to be his mate."
I wasn't exactly surprised. The glowing smiles he gave her at dinner and his near constant blushing sort of gave it away.
"Does your father know?"
"Not yet, no. I'm going to tell him in a couple of days, though, I promise. M'Ven was the first born here. I think his mother was in the early stages of pregnancy before the battle and just didn't know it yet," Ba'el explained. "He's not officially a Centurion, of course. He wears the uniform, and he was trained by the officers here, but the Romulan government doesn't know anything about him."
She paused for a moment, allowing the weight of her words wash over me.
"We agreed that this year when I came home, if I still felt the same for him, he'd come with me on my next trip. It'll be a little more risky traveling together, but we'll manage. After that, when we come home next year, we're going to stay and build a life together," she said letting out a giggle that was so infectious that I couldn't help but join her. "So what about you? I assume that you and Papa are going to stop dancing around each other sometime this decade...?"
"I-I don't know what you mean." Stammering certainly didn't help my case, but the laugh that left her throat told me that she wouldn't have believed me even if I'd sounded perfectly confident. "Ba'el, I...I do love your father, but I don't want to do anything that would make you uncomfortable–"
"What are you talking about? I haven't seen him this happy in years! Last year I was so worried about him that I stayed for a month instead of my usual couple of weeks. He practically had to kick me out." She gripped my forearms gently and looked into my eyes. "I'm happy for you. When one of you finally works up the courage to talk about your feelings, I'll be the first person to celebrate. You're good for him, and, from what I can see, he's good for you."
Relief, palpable and potent, rushed through me, and I hugged Ba'el to hide the tears that had gathered in my eyes. We sat by the pond, talking and joking until the unmistakable sound of footsteps met our ears. We both turned in time to see M'Ven rounding one of the larger trees with a bouquet in hand. He caught sight of us and froze - he'd clearly been coming to meet Ba'el, but my presence startled him, the poor lad.
Ba'el beckoned him over, and the bob of his Adam's apple in his throat as he swallowed betrayed the confident air he'd clearly been trying to exude.
"Calm down, she knows. I told her," Ba'el said as I smiled and got to my feet.
"I also know when it's my cue to leave." Giving poor, startled M'Ven a wink, I started to walk away and give them some privacy. Before I got out of earshot, though, I turned back and called his name. "I think it goes without saying that you'd better be good to her."
Resolve straightened his back and lifted his chin.
"I will, lhhei, you have my word." With that promise obtained, I left them to their own devices, and, though I'd intended to go to my room and sleep, my feet carried me to Tokath's study seemingly of their own volition.
The door was already open, revealing the man in question sitting at his desk and staring into a cup of tea as if it held the answers to life itself. I wanted so badly to kiss the little furrow between his eyebrows and the lines on either side of his mouth...
As if my gaze had called out to him, his eyes lifted from the depths of his tea and caught me hovering in the doorway. His features melted seamlessly from from surprised to relieved to elated in barely a flash.
"Ah, so I haven't been abandoned for the evening, then," he teased as I closed the door behind me. Tokath leaned back in his chair, and I noticed for that there was a second cup of tea sitting on the desk.
"As if I could stay away from you, Commander." Walking over to his desk, I leaned against the polished surface and glanced at his bookshelves for the thousandth time. I knew very well which titles sat on the shelves - even the Klingon ones - but I needed somewhere to look other than at his gorgeous face. "Forgive me for being late. Ba'el and I were talking."
"So that's where you were! I turned to speak with L'Kor for barely a moment after dinner, but when I turned back, my two favorite ladies were nowhere to be found," he said placing a hand over his heart and pouting as if he was deeply wounded. "I thought for a moment you'd been stolen away. I noticed that M'Ven disappeared after a while, as well. I couldn't help but wonder..."
As he trailed off, I felt a brief surge of hope. L'Kor's words and Ba'el's floated into my brain. Maybe they were right. Maybe I did have a chance, after all.
"M'Ven is kind, and he is a friend of mine, but I wouldn't give up your company for his." With my reassurance putting his mind at ease, Tokath grasped my hands and smiled up at me.
"Forgive me, e'lev, I shouldn't be this greedy with you."
Freeing one of my hands, I rested it lightly on his chest.
"There's nothing to forgive. You can be as greedy with me as you want, Tokath," I murmured, and just like that I found myself lost in his gaze. There was a softness in his features when he looked at me, a vulnerability that made me want to wrap him in my arms and never let go. It went through my mind that I could tell him. I could kiss him there, right then, while that gentle trance had us so firmly in its grip, but I couldn't seem to make my mouth move.
"The tea...I'm sorry, it's probably cold by now." His voice was so rough when he spoke that he sounded as though there was gravel in his throat. I could hardly blame him, though. When I spoke, I sounded just as destroyed.
"It's okay. How many evenings have we talked so long that we forgot we even had tea to begin with?" He let out a quiet laugh at my question, and we fell into our usual rhythm of conversation. Before we drifted off together, though, I promised myself that before his daughter left with her own lover, I'd tell Tokath how I felt. If shy, reserved, dutiful M'Ven could ask the woman he loved to be with him, I could tell Tokath how much I adored him.
--
"She matches this little community of misfits well, doesn't she?" The rough voice of his co-leader sounded from just behind Tokath's right shoulder. L'Kor was observing the group of small children on the other side of the courtyard that were listening intently to a story that the Human woman was telling them. "The children like her, their parents trust her...she has even befriended Ta'lana. It's as if she's been here all her life."
"She did say that she felt more at home here than anywhere else," Tokath mused as he watched one of the youngest - a brave Klingon girl of no more than three - climb onto her lap. He couldn't stop himself from smiling at the ease with which she handled life in the colony.
The Klingon leader hummed quietly and they watched as the children begged her to show them a Human game.
"You see it now, do you not, old friend?" L'Kor asked as he and Tokath watched her explain how to play game. She said that it was one that children of her species played called 'hide and seek.' As soon as she turned her back on the giggling group of little ones, they promptly scurried away as she began to count.
"I don't know what you mean," Tokath murmured, but the aged Klingon let out a rough, disbelieving laugh.
"Yes, you do. Whether you wish to admit it or not, you look at that kyamo Human woman, and you feel young again," he rasped as a tiny Romulan boy sped past their feet. "You cannot hide it from me, Tokath. I know you too well. Since she crashed into our lives, you have become more like your old self. You should tell her how you feel."
The Commander shook his head quickly as she turned back toward the courtyard.
"Ready or not, here I come," she called, and a few poorly-suppressed giggles echoed from various not-so-clandestine spots.
"I couldn't. She chose to stay here in this isolated place without a single other member of her species being present. She believed that I alone had the power to banish her. She begged me to stay. I will not jeopardize her newfound happiness by making her feel trapped by an old man's unwelcome attentions," Tokath protested to his old friend.
"'Trapped'? 'Unwanted'? Commander, she seeks out your attention on a daily basis," L'Kor stated as he looked at his friend incredulously. "Have you not noticed how differently she behaves around you than everyone else here? Can you not see the light in her eyes when you give her a reason to smile? My friend, if such a woman looked at me with as much love as that Human lady looks at you, I would have made my interest known long ago."
That made Tokath pause. There had been moments where he believed - where he hoped - that he saw something beyond simple gratitude and friendship in her eyes, but he'd dismissed it, believing that those moments were a product of his own wishful thinking. Even a few nights ago when she still came to him after speaking with Ba'el for so long, there was a charged moment when he felt as thought might have a chance.
He did love her. She was a ray of light in a world that had grown gray and stagnant. He'd sacrificed so much over the years - his home, his career...he'd given everything to ensure that the families of the Klingons living here would not be dishonored. He'd even been forced to surrender his wife to the ravages of time. Did he not deserve to have a moment's pleasure of his own? Did he not have the right to cling to this bright spot and bask in her presence now that he'd found her?
Tokath relished how easily she made him smile...how effortlessly she made him laugh. Her quick wit and warmth had brought so much color to his life. He'd narrowly managed to avoid losing her to the transport, but only just. Had she not come to him and pleaded for a place in the Carraya colony, she would be lightyears from him by now. How long would it be before someone else here - someone younger and more willing to be forthright about their feelings - caught her eye?
He thought he'd revealed too much when he made that offhanded comment about M'Ven, but neither of them had been brave enough to make a move afterward. He cursed his cowardice yet again. He should've kissed her that night.
Taking a deep breath, Tokath nodded his head and mentally acknowledged how fortunate he'd been thus far. He might not be for much longer if he didn't gather his courage. Would his daughter approve now that she'd had a chance to meet her?
A few feet away, she found a Klingon child hiding behind a set of supply crates, and when she looked up Tokath's eyes met hers. His lips stretched into a warm smile reflexively, and she gave him a little wave as she went to look for more of hiding children.
Oh, Elements, he couldn't deny it any longer.
"You've made your point, L'Kor."
"And what are you going to do now that you see your situation more clearly?" Tokath bristled slightly as he turned to look at his friend. "Oh, come now. You cannot tell me that you have not given any thought to the possibilities. Surely, you've at least imagined what you might say if you were to tell her how you feel?"
He had, but most of those daydreams ended in him dejectedly acknowledging that she would likely never be able to return his affections.
Tokath's expression must've said it all, because L'Kor sighed heavily.
"Oh, my friend, do you truly think so little of yourself that you cannot even imagine a happy ending? Take it from me: it was far more difficult for my wife to give me a chance than it will be for that lovely girl to give you one," he said before patting the Commander's shoulder and ambling off.
Perhaps L'Kor was right. Maybe he simply needed to allow himself to consider the possibility that she might react favorably to the fondness, no, love - that was the emotion and he should call it by its name - that he'd developed for her.
A joyful squeal from one of the little ones drew his attention, and he saw his lady being hugged so enthusiastically by the children that she was practically drowning in their affections. She sank to the ground, surrendering good-naturedly to their embraces with a giggle. Tokath couldn't suppress his laughter at the sight of her trying to hug as many of the children in return as her arms could accommodate.
Her eyes found him through the clamor of the group, and his heart thudded alarmingly. Oh, the things she did to him!
One of the children whispered something in her ear, and when she nodded her head, the little girl broke away from the group and ran up to Tokath, looking up at him with big, hopeful eyes as she spoke.
"Mister Tokath, sir? Will you come play with us?" She asked as the rest of the children and his Human watched their interaction.
How could he say no to such a polite request?
--
Later that evening as he walked to his quarters to get ready for dinner, Tokath thought to himself that the afternoon spent playing with the children along with the woman he loved was one of the most enjoyable days he'd had in quite some time. The joy of simply being with her was enough to make him feel like the luckiest Romulan alive.
"When are you going to marry her, Papa?" Ba'el appeared at his side smiling up at his as she looped her arm with his. Had he truly been so lost in thought that he hadn't heard her approach?
"Marry? What are you talking about?" He asked as innocently as he could, but all that earned him was a scoff from his daughter.
"Oh, please. The entire colony knows how you feel about your newest resident," she said, and his cheeks heated up as she continued. "So when are you going to ask her?"
"Ba'el, I...I don't even know if she'll have me–"
"Are we talking about the same woman? When you joined her and the children today, she looked at you like you hung the stars in the sky," his daughter said. "You haven't been this happy since..."
She didn't have to finish her sentence. He knew what she meant. They both know the significance.
Pulling her to a stop in the hallway, Tokath grasped his daughter's shoulders lightly and looked into her eyes.
"Could you handle that? Could you live with the knowledge that you have a stepmother who is neither Klingon nor Romulan?" Ba'el's opinion of her was important to him - it was the only one that mattered outside of his own on this. He didn't want her to feel as though he was actively attempting to replace her mother. Gi'ral had been unique and he would never wish to disrespect her memory.
But he also didn't wish to be alone for the rest of his life. He adored this Human lady, and he...well, he would dearly love to be her mate.
"Father, I want you to live. I've been worried about you for the last few years, but now...seeing you this happy...I'm so relieved that you've found someone who makes you feel like yourself again. How could I ever object to you finding love?"
Overcome with emotion, Tokath pulled his daughter into a tight hug, nearly sobbing in relief.
"I...have some news, too...about M'Ven and I." She sounded nervous, but in truth, she had no reason to be. Pulling back slightly, Tokath looked at his daughter.
"Ba'el, if you believe that I know nothing of your affections for him or his for you, then you have clearly forgotten that I used to be young, too," he said looking into her eyes. "I wish the both of you every happiness, and if he hurts you, you tell me how much he screams when you tear his head off. And I know you're imminently capable, but if you need help, I'm here for you."
His daughter was right. He needed this. He didn't want to be alone anymore.
--
Tokath's daughter had been on the colony for nearly a week and a half when it happened. I stopped by his quarters to pass along a message from Ta'lana before dinner, but when I reached his doorway, I froze. He was standing in front of a full-length mirror, in his full uniform, tugging it gently in various directions presumably to straighten it. The poses he struck might have looked silly to anyone else, but to me, the imposing figure he made when he puffed up his chest and gave a harsh glare to his reflection made me bite my lip.
Realizing how long I'd been standing there, I knocked on the doorframe and acted as though I'd only just arrived when he turned his head.
"Just the woman I wanted to see," he exclaimed as he turned to face me. "I dug out one of my older uniforms and thought I'd wear it to dinner tonight. What do you think?"
He puffed out his chest once more as I stepped into the room, looking very much like the proud Commanding officer that he was.
"Very handsome...commanding..." I paused when I was right in front of him, itching to touch any part of him that I could. "...Perhaps a little rigid, though."
His smile fell a bit.
"Rigid?"
"Only a little," I answered, and he raised a curious eyebrow.
"How would you fix this...rigidity?" He asked, and I walked a slow circle around him before reaching up to finger the front of the ghastly leather collar at the top of his uniform.
"Does this part come off separately?" Tokath swallowed slightly before letting out a quiet confirmation. "May I?"
The Commander caught both my hands carefully in his and slid them around to the back of his neck where the collar's clasps lay.
"Do what you will with me." His voice had lowered, both in volume and in pitch to something husky...something that made me want to remove more than just this hideous strip of leather. After a moment's pause, I managed to unfasten the clasps and pull the collar away from his throat.
My next movement proved that I wasn't thinking. Once I'd tossed away the unnecessary accessory, I skimmed my fingertips over his neck, savoring the feeling of his pulse thrumming beneath my touch. Tokath's hands grasping my waist made me aware of what I'd done, pulling me out of whatever trance I'd been in and forcing my eyes to meet his.
Anything I'd been preparing to say was obliterated by the hunger in his eyes. Was I imagining it? I could simply have been seeing my own emotions reflected back at me.
Then he took a slow step toward me, and I stopped thinking about anything but how badly I wanted to kiss him. I took a breath and leaned in–
Only to be startled by a call of his name from the hallway. We both took a hasty step back and averted our eyes as Ta'lana appeared in his doorway.
"There you are. I tried to catch up with you, but it turns out you didn't need to deliver your message. I found the extra crates from our last shipment, after all," she said, then she turned her attention to Tokath. "My apologies for the disturbance, Commander. I hope this hasn't been too much of an inconvenience."
Tokath caught my hand and gave me a little wink.
"No, not at all," he said catching my eye. "I always welcome your company, lhhei."
A long, charged pause stretched between us, and my cheeks heated up under his gaze, but finally Ta'lana called my name.
"Come, come. We've taken enough of the Commander's time," she called, and I started toward the doorway.
"See you at dinner," I called over my shoulder, hoping neither of them could hear how unsteady I sounded. His response barely registered as Ta'lana closed the door behind us.
"I'm looking forward to it, e'lev."
--
The atmosphere in the dining hall that evening was different. It felt as though everyone was waiting for something to happen. They seemed nervous, yet...excited? How odd. When Tokath arrived, he took a seat beside me as usual and caught my hand in his. Before I could ask what he was doing, he'd tucked a flower securely in my hair just above my ear. The delicate petals tickled a bit, but I didn't dare risk dislodging it after he'd placed it there so carefully.
I opened my mouth to ask him what he was doing, but the words just wouldn't come out. He seemed to understand my dilemma, though, because he brushed the back of his knuckles down the the side of my face and swallowed heavily.
The heat that suffused my cheeks when we were alone in his quarters earlier made a spectacularly rapid return, even as dinner was served.
Conversation was hushed, but weighty that night from all sides. People were happy for M'Ven and Ba'el - news had already made its way through the colony like wildfire, sparking surprised exclamations and boastful assertions that people had seen it coming years ago.
But there was something else, as well. Given how peoples' eyes kept straying up to the head table where Tokath and I sat, I guessed that people were wondering how he was taking the news. It wouldn't be unreasonable to assume that he'd be emotional about his daughter finally choosing a partner. If that was the case, though, why were so many gazes landing on me? Was it the flower? I supposed that I couldn't blame them. After all, I'd been surprised, too.
The Commander offered me his arm when the meal ended and I took it without hesitation, allowing him to lead me out into the gardens. This particular route was one we'd never taken before, and we only stopped when we reached a footpath leading into the forest.
"Where are we going?" I asked as he guided me down it expertly, pushing small branches aside and helping me over a fallen log.
"A secret place I found years ago. As far as I'm aware, nobody else even knows it exists," he said with a wink. After a few more minutes, we reached a curtain of vines. Thinking we'd reached a dead end, I looked around in confusion, but Tokath walked me right up to it with his arm wrapped comfortably around my waist. I looked up at him, and he winked as he parted the vine stems.
Moonlight sparkled and gleamed as it bounced off the surface of a placid lake. A swarm of glowing insects slightly larger than Earth fireflies swirled and played above the water, reminding me of a flock of birds.
"Oh, Tokath, this is beautiful," I murmured. I was almost afraid of speaking too loudly, lest I disrupt the peace that permeated this little place. The branches of the trees surrounding the lake's edge seemed to almost wrap around the clearing like gentle, protective arms.
"I thought you might like this place. I've been waiting for the right moment to share it with you," he whispered against the shell of my ear as his hands rested on my shoulders. Gently, so carefully, he grasped my chin and turned my head toward the left shore. A few feet from the water's edge was a blanket with plush pillows, fluffy towels, and a lantern resting atop it.
That was it. Afraid or not, I was going to kiss Tokath tonight, no matter what. I turned in his grasp only to find the lantern's warm, yellowish glow caressing the adoring smile that stretched his lips.
"Thank you for trusting me with this," I said resting my hands on his chest. It was now or never. Lifting my hand to cup his cheek like I had in his room, I looked into his eyes. "You've been uncharacteristically quiet tonight. Is everything alright?"
That damned smile got wider and he let out a quiet laugh.
"Oh, yes, lhhei. Forgive me," he said drawing me into a hug. "I'm afraid I've been lost in thought."
"Oh? And what has occupied your mind so thoroughly?" I punctuated the question with a quick kiss above his fluttering pulse. The Commander's breath caught in his throat, and I realized that maybe I hadn't imagined the hunger I'd seen in him earlier after all.
His grip on me tightened and he hummed at the question.
"You have, dear lady," he muttered, his voice low and rough. That tone had caused me so much frustration since the first time I heard it. I must've let out a gasp or some other surprised sound, because he nodded his head against my scalp. "Yes, you have been a very prominent element of my thoughts since the day you arrived here, but, lately, I find myself contemplating something that...truthfully, I have no right to even consider."
Feeling his proximity even more than usual, I looked up at him curiously. He didn't relinquish his grip on me one iota, but that suited me just fine. I never wanted to stop touching him.
"Maybe talking about it would help ease your mind? Usually confiding in someone close to me helps when there's something bothering me," I suggested, hoping that he didn't notice how shaky my voice had become.
"I will, but only if you don't mind being the one who listens to me ramble. You see, you're the only one who can help me with this particular problem, but I promise I won't ask you if you're not willing." His voice was low and heavy as he spoke, carrying the same weight I'd noticed more and more lately.
"I'll do anything I can to help, Tokath. You know that," I said offering him a reassuring smile.
"You see, I've been asking myself several very specific questions...ones to which I do not have the answers. If the answers are too personal or if you do not wish to engage in that conversation, you need only tell me, and I will drop the topic. Everything can return to the way it was before. I have no desire to make you feel trapped or to change how you see me."
After his little speech, I felt certain that I knew where this might be going, and anticipation flooded through me. Butterflies beat their wings unceasingly in my abdomen.
"Questions could never change the way I look at you." He shook his head at my assertion.
"These might," he breathed as he averted his gaze. "I haven't spent much time around Humans, as you may have guessed, so I...don't exactly know how someone in your culture might approach something of this nature."
I nodded my head in encouragement as his thumbs began to rub slow circles where they rested on my waist.
"I...You see, I wish to...to..." He trailed off and took a deep breath. "When...Well, with Klingons, the men write poetry, the women throw things at each other. It's rather straightforward. Romulans are more varied in their approaches, and...I suppose what I want to ask is is this: How do I...? I mean, what would you expect of...of a...?"
Tokath let out a frustrated huff and shut his eyes. A blush so vibrant that I could see it in the lantern light darkened his cheeks and spread all the way to the tips of his ears.
"Oh, fvadt, I'll never say it at this rate. What I'm trying to tell you is that you are beautiful and kind and the part of myself I never thought I'd find," he said sounding much more resolute. "I doubt this is the way a Human would go about it - much less subtlety to it even though you deserve subtlety and romance - but I need you to know that I love you. That I...would like to be your mate. Hell, I don't even know if Humans call their bound partners 'mates' as we do, but that's neither here nor there. I'd, of course, be happy to call us anything that you wish if–"
A surge of courage tore through me, and I cut off the rest of what he was going to say with a kiss. My lips met Tokath's, and he tensed up for a moment before relaxing into it and kissing me back. One of his hands came up and cupped the back of my head, holding me as close to him as was physically possible.
"I love you, too," I blurted as soon as we separated for air. He looked as dazed as I felt, but he still managed to lift me into his arms and carry me to the blanket as his mouth met mine again.
We didn't make it back to the compound until the next morning. With our hands clasped and rather obvious marks marring the skin of our necks, it was obvious to anyone who looked our way that we were both finally whole.
Sister Mary Catherine was only weeks away from taking her vows when she has a chance encounter with a man. A man she finds out is the Pope of the Satanic church.
Chapter 9: The End Days
Also available HERE on AO3! Haven’t started yet? Read from the beginning HERE!
Definitely NSFW below!
Secondo and Primo waited impatiently outside in the hall. The sounds of their footfalls, echoing down the corridor as they paced the marble floor. The door to the infirmary was closed to them. The Ministry physician and Terzo on the other side, doing everything they could to save Mary and the child.
Secondo’s heart was heavy. Filled with the guilt of coveting her. No longer envying his brother for the perceived honor he had been bestowed, but instead wounded by the knowledge of his brother’s pain. Feeling even more culpable having developed feelings for her. Still drawn to Mary, much as he supposed Terzo had been in the beginning.
Called by her fair face and sweet disposition. The likes of which, Secondo would normally regard as begging for his personal style of corruption and obscenity. Lustful thoughts he now wished he could bury, strangle—kill off. Primo noticed it, his brother’s descent into his thoughts, becoming madder as the seconds passed. Ticking away on the monstrance clock down the hall.
“What are you thinking?” Primo asked him.
“Nothing.” Secondo scoffed, folding his arms and continuing to pace. Primo hated being lied to, especially when they already knew he knew. Bringing his arm up to halt him with a jolt to the chest. Stopping Secondo in his tracks.
“Cazzate. So quando nascondi qualcosa. Pensi che sia la prima volta che mi menti. Che sono completamente nuovo alla tua stupidità?” he spewed, groaning in Italiano. Always faltering to his native tongue when he became flustered or angry.
“It’s this whole thing.”
“Jealousy was always your downfall Secondo… you need to learn not everything belongs to you.” Primo snapped. Pissed that Secondo was still hung up on misplaced desires for their brother’s lover. Convinced that Secondo cared more about satisfying his cock than he did anything else.
“I know, and for that I am sorry.” he sighed, a moment of true contrition from him. One Primo had not expected, when Terzo came from behind the door. Still covered in blood, but his face awash in relief.
“She’s stable. For how long we don’t know.” Terzo explained, running his hand over his head. Allowing himself a moment to come down from the surge of adrenaline that had come from what transpired.
“Did she receive the wound fratello? The wound of the spear?” Primo asked, hoping that if she had, and survived it, by Satan’s grace then maybe she would be spared the fate he had feared was destined for her.
“No…no she did not.”
Tumblr media
Hours later, Terzo refused to leave Mary’s side once more. His head hung low towards his lap. Pounding and spinning. Never before in his life had he felt such pain and anguish. Scared with every fiber of his being that Mary would pay the price for his own selfishness—his cowardice. He held her hand gently as she laid beside him on the bed—unconscious and lost.
“What’s done, is done fratello. You can’t change that.” Primo told him. His brotherly hand, placed atop Terzo’s shoulder. Trying to comfort the brother who he could not bear to see suffering. The greatness of it was unimaginable as the woman Terzo loved—who carried his child, remained somewhere in purgatory. Paying for their shared crime against Heaven—alone.
“So I just sit here? Siediti come un fottuto idiota?” he lashed out. An action that would have normally elicited a slap from Primo, now leaving him despondent. Terzo clutching tighter to Mary’s hand. Hoping for some sign that she was going to be alright. That he could look to the future and see them thriving.
Even now he imagined it—a small child and his Mary. Surrounded by the beauty of the gardens. Her smiling face, turning back to look at him as he followed closely behind them. All he had ever wanted, wrapped up in that one small fragment of hope still holding on inside him.
“Of course, not Terzo. Come with me, let us go find Secondo and formulate a plan.” Primo suggested. Terzo looked up at him through his brows. Angry that all the answers had always led to more questions. Knowing just how dire the current situation had become and that their time had all but run out. Watching as Mary was slipping away.
“What, pray tell would he do to help? The man has practically been avoiding me since this all started. Something is going on with him. I have half a mind to think he has something to do with this.” Terzo groaned.
“While I admit there is more to his sulking than meets the eye, I hardly can believe that he is responsible for this. You know better than that fratello.” Primo reasoned with him. Terzo lamented, nodding his head in agreement. Primo was right, while he was certainly not innocent, Secondo did not create this problem.
Something felt off once more to Terzo. The words Primo had said stuck with him. Lingering a moment before he inquired about them. Asking his brother for clarification.
“What do you mean there is more than meets the eye.” Terzo asked, his curiosity piqued as Primo began rubbing at his temples. Exhaling through pursed lips as he realized what he had just done.
“Terzo this really isn’t the time.” Primo explained, hoping that thing would just move on, but knowing full well that once Terzo had his mind set to ask there would be no getting around it.
“Tell me now.”
“Secondo… he… well the stronzo has developed some feelings for…”, Primo began as he gestured towards Mary, “They are misplaced as usual and he will absolutely not act on them, but of course you know him. He always wants the toy he doesn’t have.” Primo explained, desperately trying to downplay the situation, when Terzo rose up from his spot on the bed. The vein on his forehead, bulging as he went to leave the room.
Secondo came drifting out of the confessional booth. Following a very disheveled sister of sin, who seemed to be in a hurry to leave, as Primo and Terzo approached him. Primo rolled his eyes as he watched Secondo adjusting his slacks.
“I hope we aren’t interrupting. Terzo hissed. His eyes filled with fury. Ready to tear Secondo apart. His resolve barely held together as Secondo replied.
“I needed to get some things off my mind.”
“Yeah… I know exactly what it is you need to relieve yourself of you stronzo!” Terzo growled. Secondo, looking over to Primo for answers before dodging a punch.
“Che cazzo stai facendo?” Secondo yelled, ready for Terzo’s next move.
“He knows fratello.” Primo explained.
“Knows what?” Secondo groaned as Primo did his best to stop Terzo from lunging at him once again. Terzo’s chest heaving and teeth clenched—ready for a fight.
“Cazzo! You think I don't know what you are thinking? That I can’t see the things you think are hidden. The truths I know you have uttered in darkness, behind closed doors. Vile things spit from your mouth under the veil of anonymity. I had my suspicions, but the confirmation… you disgust me.” Terzo growled, grabbing hold of Secondo’s chasuble. Ready to kill him with his bare hands.
“Now is not the time, Terzo. You need to think about Mary. You needn't be worried about this fool. He knows he is out of line. I assure you.” Primo proclaimed, pulling Terzo off and pushing Secondo back from attempting to swing on him.
“Va’ a farti fottere.” Terzo said, spitting in Secondo's direction as he took off towards the gardens.
Terzo reached the greenhouse. Desperate for the fresh air, to remove himself from his conflict with Secondo. Primo would keep watch over Mary as he tried to clear his head, but he was a man on fire. Rage, building up inside him. Digested with his brother and even more so, his own feelings of helplessness.
He sat at the wrought iron table just outside the greenhouse. Storm clouds hanging high overhead, threatening a downpour—a cosmic reflection of how he was feeling inside. An imminent crash and burn steadily ahead. Terzo was falling apart.
It was in this, his darkest of times that it appeared to him. Like in the Nazarene’s moment of weakness, he first heard the sound of leaves crumbling under pressure. The howl in the wind, chilling him before finally the appearance of a black, slick scaled serpent. Slithering along the soft bed of grass.
Its eyes, a wicked golden glow. It was silent as it crawled along its belly. Disappearing slowly behind one of Primo’s prized red rose bushes. Only to reappear—transformed as a dark, mysterious woman.
Soft form, draped in black fabric. Fabric that seemed to move as if it were floating in water as they approached him. Eyes filled with Hell fire, lined in charcoal black lashes and the rubiest of red lips. Their beauty, unlike anything Terzo had ever seen. Who? What was this?
“Dilecte fili mi dulcissime. Plenus vae, ut te salutat benignus deus tuus.” the woman said as they reached him. Terzo freezing up in their presence. Pupils blown wide and the beating of his heart, echoing in his ears.
“Who are—” he tried to ask, feeling the sensation of his bones being chilled by an icy fire inside him. Both freezing and burning up in the being’s presence. The sounds of thunder, beginning to rumble in the sky.
“I am called many things.” They smiled. It was then clear to Terzo in that moment exactly who they were. This temptress—this ethereal being was Lucifer him…herself.
“You're him, her…” he said, the words halting as they left him.
“I can be whatever you desire...” they began, perking up an eyebrow at him, “...and what we all know you desire, Emeritus, is and always will be—a beautiful woman.” Lucifer smirked. Terzo shook off the initial shock, trying to pretend he didn’t feel the immense discomfort from merely being this close to them.
“You’re not wrong…but that woman is Mary.” Terzo hissed. Lucifer’s face turned to that of annoyance. Taking a seat beside him at the table as if they were two old friends. Enjoying the afternoon in each other's company.
“Terzo… please. Why can’t you be more like your brothers? Settle down that defiant streak. It doesn’t suit you.” they told him.
“Heh…”
“I mean… look what listening to me has done for you. A beautiful lover, and a child. Some men couldn’t imagine being worthy of obtaining such fine things.” Lucifer boasted. Watching as the look of anger and betrayal washed over Terzo’s face.
“You tricked me into obeying you, knowing that you would tear it all from me.” he roared.
“I have done NO such thing.” Lucifer growled. The darkness inside them, beginning to show through the well placed veil of beauty. “It is her God that makes you suffer… not me.”
“But you chose me… us for this. Had you picked Secondo and one of his lovers, God’s attention would be placed elsewhere. YOU said it had to be her. YOU sent me to take her knowing it would usurp his wraith.” Terzo cried before his Dark God. Dropping to his knees before them. Head bowed and fists grasping tight the fabric of their dress.
“Get up Emeritus… groveling will do nothing for you.” Lucifer explained to him. Terzo, raising up as he was told. Meeting with Lucifer’s stare.
“Please choose someone else.” Terzo begged once more. The Dark one letting out a sigh. Feeling themselves a pushover—always having had an affinity for the youngest Emeritus son.
“I will consider it—”
“Oh…oh thank you Lucifer. Thank you.” Terzo interrupted, too soon it seemed when Lucifer held out their hand to stop his praises.
“But you must do something for me.”
“What?! Tell me! I’ll do anything to spare her and our child from this chaos and pain.” he cried, ready to give up his own life if Lucifer should only ask of it. Lay down on Hell’s vorpal blade and allow himself to be extinguished at the Dark one’s hands. The love he felt for his child and Mary, giving him the strength to end it all. Knowing that in return they’d be safe in his stead.
“I require a sacrifice. If I agree to withhold the evil that is set to inhabit your child. If I release your woman from the peril that plagues her…then I want you to…”
“Please, anything!” Terzo cried again, Lucifer smiling as they took his face in the palms of their hands. Holding him deceivingly gentle, as if they didn’t hold his life—his family’s lives in their grasp.
“You will kill Secondo.”
Very much agree with all of your thoughts on Playful Land. The ending really was lackluster...to be honest, when I first saw the trailer, I was soooo excited for what had the potential to be THE darkest, most disturbing event in all of TWST (I thought their card designs were already so cool and unnerving at the same time! Their outfits but also their eerily puppet-like poses...!). But at the end, none of the topics that you mentioned that could have been explored were explored. Like hello, you are dealing with fucking HUMAN TRAFFICKING??!? Also more emphasis on magic being used for something like THIS. Turning people into puppets is fucking terrifying.
Also, very much a minor nitpick, but I kiiiind of expected/hoped this event to take place during the same time as the Masquerade event? Since the Playful event involved everyone who stayed behind. Like, I'm just imagining everyone who went to the Masquerade coming back after a hectic near death experience, only to find that the people left behind went through a terrifying experience of their own at the same time and are now traumatized, and nobody had a fun Halloween. Lmao. Although I guess it didn't make much sense to expect this, since Yuu's in both events and they can't be in the other when they're already at one lmao.
I'm also not hating, all in all it was actually a pretty decent event all things considered! I also loved the introduction of Fellow and Gidel. And the song slaps imo. Still, if you make a fix-it fic or find any, think you could share it? I'd love to see your work if you do make one!
Tumblr media
Ahhh I feel the same way too! It really felt like the Halloween events were about to get darker and darker every year- they are HALLOWEEN events for a reason! Their cards were so eerie too, it made all the characters look like puppets under control. Which is why it’s so strange that none of that actually happened in the event? ∑(゚Д゚) The boys did get wooden masks and such, losing their own autonomy, but I thought the puppet theme would be a lot heavier than it actually was. Like, at least forcing the boys to fight against Kalim, Ortho, and Ace, instead of using random wooden puppets.
THE HUMAN TRAFFICKING BEING BRUSHED OFF HAS ME ROLLING 😭😭😭. What do you mean Fellow just sails away to open a school for children 😭😭😭 Like the game literally never elaborates on what happened to the people turned into human puppets. Are they dead?? Are they alive and forever trapped in this horrifying puppet-like state??? Like??? I definitely need to read up on the last parts of the event, but the idea that someone can even has this ability is horrifying, and I really would’ve liked to see the commentary on this sort of magic. How magic and human greed combine to create unthinkable atrocities that are only doable through magic. It’s just…wow. It blows my mind that this incredible concept was conceived, but never elaborated on.
Haha, exactly! I think it’s so funny that no one’s predictions on Playful Land came true. Nothing about Ace’s brother was involved, the Masquerade event theory didn’t happen. I don’t think it was even Halloween during this event either. Maybe it could’ve been a “Fairy Gala IF” type of event where Yuu can be at both events for alternate-universe type of thing. Although, to be honest, neither Yuu or Grim played a huge role in the story (*゚▽゚*) I’m always happy to have Grim with us, and him dressed up as Lampwick made me cry, but Yuu was more of an observer than usual.
Tumblr media
And same here! I know I sound negative but I’m really not! I love the event for what it is, and we got amazing new characters and animations and costumes. It’s just a shame to think of what could’ve been. I haven’t seen any fix it fics yet, at least on Ao3! I have been working on drafting a rewrite though! ✌︎('ω'✌︎ ) I’m really excited to write my visions for this event, especially with Fellow and Gidel’s backstory, and I’ll keep everyone updated on this. Whenever I drop the chapters, I’ll always post about them on my blog and link my Ao3 updates. It will take a while before I get there, but I hope it’s soon, thank you for interest! \\\\٩( 'ω' )و //// Thanks for your ask, I loved hearing your thoughts about this event!
Expecting a Secret [2/3]
Tumblr media
Summary: After the events of 3x19, Killian is at his lowest after being rejected by Emma. When Snow’s labor turns out to be a false alarm, Zelena offers Killian a deal: she’ll leave the Charmings alone…if he gives her the baby she needs for her spell instead. There’s just one hitch: he has to keep it a secret. At least it will only take 10 days, right? a/n: Here's the second part of my bday fic for @sancocnutclub !!! This is the full fic from the manip I posted last week. Last chapter should go up on Friday! rated T | AO3 | 3.8k | part 1 |
Based on what Killian was feeling and seeing, the next morning found him roughly at the 23-week mark (as expected, he’d spent most of the night studying his borrowed book—and was feeling thoroughly overwhelmed). His stomach looked yet larger, but his vest still had plenty of room, even if the laces on the side were let out a bit more.
He also found himself resting his hand on his belt to further hide the increasingly obvious curve of his midsection (at least, it appeared so to him, given all the decades that his form had remained unchanged). It seemed to work, thankfully, but he also made an effort to not be too social; he took lunch with Emma and Henry, at their request, but had to pass on their invite to dine at the loft that night. He cited his desire to avoid the extra burden on Snow—who it was implied could go into labor at any moment, though he had (good) reason to believe they had a bit more time, assuming Zelena’s implication that she had control over Snow’s pregnancy was true—but in reality, he knew his ravenous appetite would be nigh impossible to hide in such close quarters. (Granny was far less discerning, especially with with her approving comments about “putting some meat on his bones.”)
“We’ll miss you,” Henry told him as he and Emma left the diner that afternoon; Killian wasn’t sure if what he felt at that was his heart skipping a beat, or yet another kick from the little one, which were happening with increasing frequency and strength.
He tried his damnedest to swallow his emotions and looked up at Emma, who was giving him a similar gentle look. “I, uh, I’ll miss you too—lad,” he added quickly. “Until next time.”
He was glad he’d left things vague when he yet again felt immediate relief at unclasping his vest once back in his room. The odds of it fitting even later that day were slim to none, which would no doubt draw Emma’s attention. No, he’d do best to avoid her the next several days, until this whole thing was done.
That was something else he’d noticed—his conscious effort to put distance between him and this child, even if it obviously was more emotional than physical. His paternal side would find it far too easy to start considering names for the wee one, to caress his growing stomach and maybe even serenade the baby, to start preparing for the future. He wasn’t even sure the babe was his—but that had never stopped him before.
Until he knew how to keep them safe from Zelena’s clutches, though, he didn’t dare; that might only lead to heartbreak, and he’d known enough of that for a few lifetimes.
He did ask Emma, during a moment when Henry stepped away to the restroom, if any progress had been made regarding the witch problem, given that his attempt at research was fruitless.
“Nothing yet,” she sighed. “Unless we can somehow steal the items back before my mom goes into labor, our only hope is my magic.” Her eyes briefly darted to his lips; he leaned away from her.
“I’d say both are good plans,” he assured her. “Especially the second one.”
She rolled her eyes, but blushed. “I think you’re the only person confident in that.”
“Well, take some of mine, then. Remember: I have yet to see you fail,” he reminded her, and placed his hand over hers on the diner table.
The look she gave him was heavy; she still wasn’t used to people having that kind of faith in her, he knew. But if this was his only way of thwarting the witch—of keeping two infants safe—he’d give her as much support as he could.
The moment was simultaneously interrupted by Henry’s return, and a strong kick from his passenger—as if to remind him that at some point here (sooner than he’d care to admit), he’d have to go into hiding. He’d have to figure out a way to offer his support from afar.
But until there was a definite plan, he was going to keep things as impersonal as possible, merely trying to make sure he complied with Zelena’s rules and did whatever he needed to remain something resembling comfortable. The babe seemed to be growing just fine; his stomach was maybe a touch smaller than average, but that could be attributed to him also being taller than the typical expectant parent, as well as a life at sea demanding denser core muscles.
Hopefully, that remained the trend; he’d read the section about what happened after birth in more detail and…it wasn’t pretty. And he was still a rather vain man, with a woman to woo, if she’d still have him.
(He hadn’t given much thought as to how he might explain this to Emma after the fact, if at all; he hoped the simple fact that Zelena was no longer going after the Charmings would be enough that they wouldn’t even need to have the conversation. However, he wasn’t naive enough to count on it.)
—----------------------------------------------
When he woke the next morning, his hand was instinctively resting atop the bare curve of his belly. (That didn’t bode well for his plans of detachment.)
He also found it difficult to sit up in his normal manner; after much rolling around and repositioning, he finally managed to get upright—only to see that his stomach had popped out a fair bit overnight. It most definitely resembled a bump now; after using the lavatory, he traced the curve of it in the mirror, equal parts astounded and horrified. He was also surprised at how firm it was—it wasn’t just softness; there was definitely something there. (Something that was repeatedly kicking at his liver, it felt like.)
His tunic was plenty roomy, but the vest would no longer clasp over his gravid form, no matter how much he let out the laces. He huffed as he cast it aside; he knew it was inevitable, but it was depressing all the same. At least his pants still fit, but barely—and likely not for much longer.
If no one looked closely, and he didn’t tuck in his shirt, it wasn’t all that noticeable. But there would be no hiding it from those even reasonably close to him. Now he understood why the upper-class women referred to this time as “confinement”—because in order to keep this hidden, he’d have to stay in his room.
Not for the first time, he wished he had his ship; it would have been far easier to hide out there, away from prying eyes. Or if only there were another inn in town, but it would likely draw more attention if he were to relocate.
While he still had a semblance of normalcy to his appearance, he decided he should seek out provisions to get him through the next several days. By his math, he’d only just crossed the halfway mark in the time frame Zelena gave him, but was more than halfway through the pregnancy—so it was likely slowing down in speed, meaning he’d be spending the bulk of it during the most uncomfortable parts. Not only would he need food, he’d need other supplies as well.
He’d jotted down a list and slipped it into the pocket of his greatcoat, next to the fair amount of gold he’d stashed before leaving the Jolly Roger. His jacket hung loose enough that it hid his belly, but only just.
Cautiously, he poked his head out in the hall before heading out; even if he was reasonably covered up, the more inconspicuous he could be, the better. The coast was clear, so he slipped out and locked up—but then he heard a similar sound from behind him.
“Oh, hey—I was just about to come over,” Emma said from across the way. “I’ve got a magic lesson this afternoon, but do you want to get lunch before it?”
He was still facing the door. Given the state of things, Emma was the last person he’d wanted to run into. Traitorously, the baby chose then to give him a sharp thump in the stomach, as if telling him to get a move on.
So he did his best to suck in a breath—to minimize his bump’s profile—before turning around. He plastered on his best flirtatious look and avoided the urge to place his hand on his belt. “Is that your way of asking me out on a date?” he teased, hoping the obvious come-on would prevent her from suspecting anything was awry.
As predicted, she rolled her eyes. “If I was asking you on a date, it wouldn’t be to Granny’s,” she countered.
“Duly noted,” he quipped back (and saved for future reference). “But unfortunately, I have to decline the invitation; I’m afraid I have some errands to run that I’ve been putting off too long.”
“Oh.” Her face fell, and he tried to make sure his heart didn’t follow it. “Well, I could go with you, if you wanted.”
He did—so much. But then how would he explain the copious amounts of food he was about to buy? “I appreciate the offer, but I don’t know how long it will take—and I know that Her Majesty can’t be kept waiting.”
Emma huffed, but he saw acceptance across her face. “Yeah, you’re right. But I’m absolutely not seeing her on an empty stomach.”
“Nor should you,” he agreed, smiling—though hopefully it didn’t look too pained, because his attempts at holding in his belly were beginning to strain. As such, he started to turn away to leave, but she wasn’t done.
“Hey, where’s your vest? Is that one of your errands?”
Dammit; should have known she’d notice. But her gaze seemed to be focused on his chest and not any lower; normally, he’d comment on her leering but he was just relieved. “Aye; damaged it with my hook last night, and the laces need repair.” (That part was true—some of them had gotten a bit stretched.)
“Darn; I thought maybe you were actually going to join the modern world and get some new clothes,” she teased.
“Not yet,” he countered, but it wasn’t a bad idea—not a total wardrobe change, but perhaps something a bit…roomier, or more forgiving. “I should get to it, though.”
Emma blinked and looked back up at him, having seemingly been lost in a daydream. (Perhaps buying modern clothes did need to be added to his docket at some point; just not today.) “Yeah, and I need to get moving. Have fun.”
“Thanks, and good luck,” he farewelled; Emma headed the opposite way down the hall with a casual wave.
He waited until she was out of sight and then relaxed with a sigh; he could feel his belly press against the laces of his trousers as soon as he did, and indulged in a brief massage of his lower abdominal muscles. At least the ruse had worked—but he was definitely seeking out pants with an elastic waist.
The supermarket was aptly named; it was indeed massive and overwhelming. But it had everything—fresh vegetables and meat, bulk rations, even perishables and fresh-baked goods. It was astounding. He was easily able to gather enough provisions (healthy ones at that) for the next several days. He also grabbed some items at random that simply sounded appealing—mostly sweets, but he’d learned that cravings were a customary part of the process and this little one certainly had a sweet tooth.
(Thankfully, he also found the section with flexible clothing with ease. He purchased a couple pairs of what were labeled “sweatpants” and a few long-sleeved tops in varying sizes and colors; he just hoped he’d selected ones big enough.)
Odds were he overpaid for the lot of goods, given that the lad working the checkout didn’t know the gold conversion rate offhand, but he didn’t rightly care if it also bought the boy’s discretion. Thankfully, he also had his enchanted tote bag with him—the one with the hidden expansion charm he’d picked up…gods, he couldn’t even remember where anymore, it’d been so long—so he wasn’t spotted carrying half a dozen overladen sacks into Granny’s.
He spent the rest of the afternoon unpacking his newfound treasures, grateful to finally have a use for the seemingly magical ice box in his room. He stashed the nonperishables on his small table, and his new clothing in a dresser drawer.
One last thing remained, and admittedly, he hadn’t paid for it: a tiny outfit intended for a baby, covered with illustrations of sailboats. He’d slipped it into a pocket before paying for everything else, not wanting to draw the raised eyebrows such a purchase would attract, even if he could have passed it off as being for the Charming’s infant.
He held it up with just his thumb and forefinger; the label on it suggested it was sized for a newborn, but it still seemed impossibly small. At least, until he laid it atop the steadily increasing curve of his belly; then he wondered if it would even be large enough (though the books told him the babe was only yet the size of an aubergine, which he had stared at in the produce section for an extended period of time).
Bloody hell, what was he doing? He couldn’t get attached; if he failed to help Emma and the others defeat Zelena, it would spell doom for this child. And given that he was increasingly running out of ideas, it seemed imminent. He’d already suffered two terrible heartbreaks in his life; he wasn’t sure he could survive another (which would undoubtedly be harsher).
He yanked open an empty drawer and threw the onesie inside, then shoved it shut. Best not to continue that train of thought; only if they actually managed to defeat the witch.
Sighing, he plopped down in the dining chair and tore (literally) into a package of something called Oreos. They were delicious, but did nothing to assuage his fears or guilt. For the umpteenth time, his hand instinctively drifted to his stomach, as if his touch alone could protect the babe.
Hopefully that, and his trust in the heroes, would be enough.
—--------------------------------------------------------------
Killian awoke the next day to something touching him. In his sleep-addled mind, he lashed out towards whatever it was, fully intending to let it (or them) get acquainted with the sharp end of his hook.
However, he’d taken his prosthesis off last night, lest he do anything to injure his ever-expanding midsection, so all he did was hit it away with his brace. An annoyed yelp followed his impact.
“Bloody hell, I was just checking on the baby,” Zelena scolded. He blinked a few times, urging the sleep away from his eyes, to see the witch standing over him, scowling.
“What the hell do you want?” he demanded as he tried (and failed) to sit up, eventually settling for propping himself on his elbows.
“I’m simply making sure that my investment is paying off. I’ve kept up my part of the deal—those sickly-sweet Charmings are just fine. But I’ve got to make sure everything is going well here, too; pregnancy is tricky business, you know.” She turned her gaze to his exposed belly; despite the shirt he’d worn to bed, it had ridden up overnight. “Oh, is that a stretch mark I see?” she declared, leaning back towards him.
He yanked the hem of his shirt down, both to cut off her view and at the wound to his vanity.
“You’re no fun,” she pouted. “I thought most expectant parents were basking in the glow of creating life, or whatever?”
“When it’s something they’ve wanted, aye; not when it’s been forced on them,” he spat. He hadn’t truly understood the concept of glowing until his time spent with Snow lately; however, he felt more washed out than anything incandescent.
But speaking of glowing—as she stood upright and folded her arms, light from the window glinted off the jewel at her neck. He remembered what the Charmings had been told about it being the source of her power, and without any further thought (moving faster than he thought he could), he lunged for the pendant, hoping that it might be just that simple to defeat her.
No sooner had his fingers brushed the surface of the gem than he was thrown back forcefully against the headboard; he groaned in pain. Bollocks.
“Ah-ah-ah,” she chastised. “Did you really think it’d be that easy? Especially when you’ve been touched not once, but twice by my own magic?”
“Had to try,” he panted out as he tried to catch his breath. His hand flew to his stomach as its inhabitant also protested the blow.
“You really ought to be more careful; a fall like that isn’t good for the little one,” she warned.
“Why do I give a shit what happens to your demon offspring?” he countered.
She scoffed. “Oh, it’s not mine. The spell would never work with my own blood. But,” she started, coming closer and leaning over him again. “It is yours.”
“What?” he gasped. He’d certainly wondered, but hadn’t expected that it was actually his child. How could she expect him to hand over his own flesh and blood? What he did to Bae all those years ago still haunted him; this would be even worse.
“Indeed. All the more reason for you to be careful, hm?” The way she caressed his bump again felt more like a threat than any sort of endearment. “If this child doesn’t survive, our deal is off. And maybe you should read the part of that book over there on just what that will do to you.”
(He swallowed, because he already had, of course; he couldn’t imagine anything more traumatic than carrying a child that didn’t survive—especially now knowing this one was truly his.)
“Then who’s the mum?” he asked, trying to distract himself. He needed to know that, too, especially if it wasn’t Zelena. “Is there one?” (Biologically, he knew there should be…but, biologically, she would be the one with child.)
“There is. Magic can’t circumvent that,” she confirmed as she set herself to rights. “But as for who…I’ll tell you when it’s all said and done.”
“You’re a bastard,” he growled.
“Something me and that baby will have in common,” she laughed.
She abruptly moved away and turned around, so he closed his eyes and took another deep breath to recover, at least physically, while she was distracted. He hadn’t realized how much the babe was pressing on his lungs until now.
“Oh, isn’t this sweet?” Zelena cooed. He opened his eyes to see her holding up the onesie. “Not my color scheme, but it certainly suits your aesthetic. Too bad they won’t get to wear it.”
Angrily, he stood from his bed to rush at her—he didn’t know why, exactly, just that he was suddenly filled with rage—but it was for nought, as she merely threw the garment at him before disappearing in her signature green smoke.
He caught it against his chest and sighed. He’d failed, hadn’t he? There was no way he could do anything to keep this child from Zelena’s clutches now, unless Emma managed to defeat her in the next few days. He sniffled, suddenly overcome by emotion—because wasn’t this so typical for him? To lose the things he loved?
(Because, much as he had tried not to, he did love the babe—even before he knew it was his; that was just his nature. But as with all things he loved, it was going to be taken from him—and their mum likely had no clue. Shit.)
His gaze was still on the outfit, vision blurring with tears, when a knock rapped at his door. He froze, hoping whoever it was would go away, but it sounded again. “Hook? Are you there?”
Of course it was Emma. Despite everything, he couldn’t say no to her. “Coming,” he called out, and quickly tossed the onesie aside, wiped his eyes, and strode to the door.
But then he glanced down; there was no hiding his belly, especially while wearing just the shirt and sweatpants he’d changed into (which, while exceedingly comfortable, did nothing to disguise the curve of his waistline). So he awkwardly angled himself, and opened the door just enough to peek his upper body around.
“Morning, Swan,” he greeted, though it was nowhere near as smooth as he usually was. “To what do I owe the pleasure?”
Her brow furrowed as she looked him over, then tried to look past him into his room. “I thought I heard something weird; is everything okay?”
“Right as rain,” he lied. “I did have a run-in with my bed frame, though,” he said, hoping she would believe him if he at least partially told the truth.
“What, stub your toe?” she teased.
“Aye, something like that,” he agreed.
She briefly narrowed her gaze, but seemed to accept his answer. “Well, do you want to get breakfast? Henry was asking if you wanted to spar again, too; I think he’s gunning to be your first mate.”
He had to smile at that, but it didn’t hold. “Ah, I’m dealing with a fair bit of fatigue at the moment; can I take a rain bill?”
Emma tilted her head. “You mean a rain check?”
“That, yes.”
“I suppose, but that’s only going to mean he’ll want more later.”
“I endeavor to make it up to him in full.”
She grinned, but hers too didn’t last. “Are you sure you’re okay?”
“I just haven’t been sleeping well,” he told her—which was true, given that the babe was treating his internal organs as playthings.
“Alright, well, rest up; you’ve been missed around here.” There was a steadiness in her gaze that suggested she was speaking personally rather than generally.
“I’ll try,” he said, though his voice was almost a whisper.
“See you,” she farewelled; he repeated it and shut the door, perhaps a bit too forcefully.
The next few days were going to be interminable, weren’t they?
The lone blessing was that Belle had lent him a few books from the library, so he had the means of entertainment, and obviously had bought more than enough food. (Those Pop-Tart pastries that Emma seemed to favor were indeed delicious.)
He felt like an arse when he had to feign sleep during Emma’s next attempt to drag him from his room, around dinner time. The woman was bloody stubborn. But, as he was being reminded by the insistent little foot digging into his ribs, there was truly nothing to be done until they were out. He’d extend his apologies then—once they’d defeated the witch.
Summary:
He doesn’t buy that Steve had ‘forgotten’ he was supposed to go over to Robin’s tonight, and it’s weird that he cooked a meal that he didn’t even stay for. The guy didn’t have to do that. They could’ve ordered a pizza or something.
They are going to kiss in part 42 or so help me.
Anyway, enjoy Wayne calling Eddie tf out and Eddie is just like,
“Nice of Steve to make dinner even though he had other plans,” Wayne says.
“Yeah,” Eddie mumbles, dragging a piece of garlic bread through some of the orange-y red sauce on his plate. He doesn’t buy that Steve had ‘forgotten’ he was supposed to go over to Robin’s tonight, and it’s weird that he cooked a meal that he didn’t even stay for.
His uncle sighs and spears another bite of pasta with his fork. “Ed, are you going to quit finger painting with your food, or are you gonna say what’s on your mind?”
“No,” Eddie scoffs.
“Your sides hurting?”
“No.”
Wayne gives him a Look. “Is it about Steve?”
“Jesus H. Christ.” Eddie drops the garlic bread and scrubs both hands across his face, getting his cheek greasy in the process. “Yeah, fine, I think he’s avoiding me.”
“This got anything to do with why you look like a puppy that tracked shit in the house around him?” Wayne frowns. “I thought you talked to him about that money.”
“I did,” Eddie grumbles. He’d also talked to himself about killing the crush before it got any worse, for all the good that had done him. “I told you, we agreed that he could move in and we’d call it even, it’s fine. He's . . . a busy guy.”
Translation: too good to spend one on one time with Eddie. Which, truce or no truce, Eddie morosely figures he deserves.
Things like this have been happening ever since the Hellfire rising seniors and alumni came to the house a few days ago. Eddie hopes that he hadn’t overheard some of the guys’ King Steve comments.
But . . . the only other explanation he can think of is that Steve is going on dates. And the way Eddie’s stomach twists whenever he contemplates that possibility tells him that he’s done a terrible job of weeding out that crush.
Is it just a crush when it’s on someone who has literally saved your life?
Fuck. Oooooh fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck, it’s not a crush. It’s so much more than a crush, when the fuck did that happen?
He’s falling in love with Steve Harrington. Not the one everyone in Hawkins knows from school, but the Steve who helps him hang band posters and bakes amazing chocolate chip cookies. Who painted his own bedroom a soft, buttery yellow after admitting that he’d always hated the wallpaper his mom picked out for him when he was little. Who gave away basically all his paycheck for months trying to give a sad story a happy ending, and keeps playing the tank for a bunch of kids who can’t seem to shake their dangerous adventuring habit even away from the D&D table.
Who will never like him back, because Steve is good and Eddie is a human cockroach. Even though sometimes, sometimes, Eddie almost thinks. . . . But that’s just from looking through hopeful, falling-in-love goggles. Jesus H. Christ, Eddie thinks as he feels Wayne’s questioning gaze still on him, he should have realized how utterly gone he is for Steve much, much earlier than this.
Fuck.
Fic Writing Review 2023
Words and fics
• 281,412 words published to ao3
• approx. 150,000 more unpublished (unfinished WIP’s)
• 2 fandoms (911 & 911 Lonestar)
• Most recent drop: Night at the (Wax) Museum – an utterly cursed piece of work that is virtually unreadable. Seriously. I dare you to try. I wrote this for a guess-the-writer event and made it so unrecognisable as my own work that virtually no one read it at all. It’s a fun story and I hope that more people will read the grammatically correct version that I’ll be posting hopefully today.
• Longest fic in 2023: empty, broken, lonely, hoping at 44k (Buck and Christopher are presumed dead when Buck’s building burns down) This is one of my favourites this year.
Top 2023 fics by kudos
• empty, broken, lonely, hoping (Buck and Christopher are presumed dead when Buck’s building burns down). I really like this one and am quite proud of it. One of my favourites I’ve written this year.
• Losing Hope (Buck gets pregnant right before the lawsuit but loses the baby). Huh. This surprised me. I never thought I’d write mpreg or lawsuit fic OR that it would be one of my highest kudos’d fic this year. How bizarre!
Upcoming events and projects for 2024
Gah this is scary, I have so many.
Reluctant Werewolf crack – I really need to sit down and finish the last chapter of this. It’s about half done.
Coronation crack – likewise. I got blocked when RWRB was released and featured a polo scene very similar to what I was planning for Buddie in England and haven’t been able to get back to it since. I think I’ll scrap that chapter and just finish it off. I loathe having unfinished wip’s partly posted, it does my head in.
Big werewolf AU – featuring all my favourite tropes of kidnapped Buck, worried Eddie, Buck whump and Eddie whump too. I started it in January 2023. It’s fully plotted and maybe 2/3’s written at around 70k.
Navy Seal Buck – there’s something so fun about secretly bamf! Buck going all out to protect his firefam. He gets whumped during the course of, naturally. Again, started in January 2023, fully plotted and is maybe half done at about 50k-ish.
Angsty Buckley family drama set around the Madney wedding aka the one that will make you all weep. Fully plotted, partly begun.
Kidnapped TK – this one is so big and complex that I’m thinking of turning it into a novel some day. Fully plotted and partially written.
Eddie porn reviewer. Plotted only.
Buck sex worker. Plotted, partially written.
Carla romance novelist gets Buddie together. Plotted, partially written.
Plus the other 90+ ideas in my Ideas folder!
I’m unlikely to get much done before Christmas, too busy with family stuff and am recovering from having to have an emergency appendectomy while also having Influenza A this week. It’s been… rough.
Same for January as hubby and I are going on the first holiday alone together since having kids – Tasmania here we come! I am very glad my surgery didn’t ruin that.
Thank you for the tag @sherlockcrossing
No pressure tagging: @daughterofscotland  @rogerzsteven @cal-daisies-and-briars @ronordmann and anyone else who wants to share!
Rules: Feel free to show whatever stats you have. Only want to show Ao3 stats? Rock on. Want to include some quantitative info instead of stats? Please do this. Want to change how yours is presented? Absolutely do that. Would rather eat glass than do this? Please don’t eat glass but don’t feel like you have to do this either.
Entitled AO3 Commenters
Fam, we really need to talk about the toxic behaviour that's going on in AO3 comments these days. I know there's a lot going around about how people just want to consume, consume, consume, and move onto the next thing, and most don't even bother to kudo or comment, which is pretty heartbreaking as it is.
But sometimes, I think the folks that *do* comment, but do so in a shitty, entitle way, are even worse. Because it's like wow, you put in the time and effort to make a comment, but you were an absolute douche about it. Now, in some of these cases, I wonder if it's just young people who are new to the world of ao3 and just don't know better. Maybe they honestly don't realise what's wrong with the things they've written. So let's look at a few examples of shitty comments, and talk about why they're shitty, and what could be done to make them more acceptable.
I'm giving people the benefit of the doubt here, even when it's difficult to do so. I'd like to believe that it's just a difference in age and how we've learned to communicate with strangers online. So please, if you're guilty of these things, instead of getting angry or hurt seeing this, just think about how to do better?
So a lot has been said about the "when are you going to update again/I'm desperate for an update/" or even the *shudder* "since you haven't updated in x, I'm going to put this through an AI engine to finish the fic!" comments:
Tumblr media
Setting aside the fact that this fic is 44 chapters and over 180k words in length, and this person never left a single comment on it or any of my other fics to tell me they enjoy my work, and how shitty it feels to know your work was apparently loved and appreciated, but not enough to actually *say* that except to demand more of it, sooner... AND the fact that I have long notes on the fic and the series about why the parts are being written and posted in the order they are...
Let's talk about why these comments aren't helpful, and in fact can often have the opposite effect of what you're hoping. Authors are already likely feeling crummy about their writer's block or real life circumstances getting in the way of working on that WIP, and these comments compound the guilt we feel, which makes it even more difficult to work on. It can make us want to avoid even looking at/thinking about that WIP, no matter how well-meaning the comment.
Fic writers are real people with real lives. I only have a couple hours free time to myself everyday, and a lot of times I'm so tired I just want to do something that's mindless fun. Most nights, however, I forgo a movie or video game (IDEK the last time I played a game! and I love gaming!) or reading to work on my WIPs. Even so, these comments are a reminder that to the people reading, that's not enough. They will consume my story, not bother to thank me for it, then demand more.
Often times, you can leave the same comment going on about how much you love it, just delete the parts asking about updates and/or assuming the fic is abandoned, okay?
Next we have the 'did not bother to read the tags and/or author's note' commenters:
Tumblr media
The problem with this comment is that this fic is tagged as "no archive warnings apply" which means there is no underage content. Furthermore, while his age isn't explicitly stated in the fic, I have made it clear he is an adult, in college within the text of the story. I have the following in my author's notes at the beginning of the fic: "Tom Holland is my Spider-Man, but I have aged him up here, as he's in college, so. Feel free to imagine whichever spidey floats your boat"
If I'm going to give this commenter the benefit of the doubt (something that is increasingly difficult to do with anti culture), then at best, they do not read tags, summaries, or notes, and expect to be able to ask an author prior to reading their works to answer a comment that is already addressed multiple times.
If you're honestly worried about being triggered, or reading content you don't want to read, then I suggest just straight up avoiding fics that aren't clear enough to you from the tags/summary/notes. If you've read all those and it seems ambiguous, just skip it. Or if the story still sounds good, then maybe just skim the beginning of the story, even. Context clues are your friends, my dudes. If the character is a college student, chances are good they're adults.
The 'lacks reading comprehension' commenters:
Tumblr media
Is it wrong to ask questions of an author when you don't understand something? I actually think it's a great way of interacting with authors and can lead to better understanding and appreciation of the work. However, there are a few problems with *how* you ask a question.
First of all, the problem commenters have not previously left a comment of any kind, and don't bother to include any sort of positive feedback along with their question. They just rock up to your inbox demanding an answer to a question they have, that makes you realise they weren't even really paying attention to your work (or the source material for that matter.)
In this case, smartphones don't exist in the canon work, and only exist in my fic because the characters have suddenly been thrust into a different universe. Klaus doesn't understand smartphones because he grew up with them. He is able to quickly adapt to the new technology of the world, while others, like Viktor, are confused by it. This is all explained quite thoroughly in the text.
The 'doesn't know how to google' commenters, who might also be the 'disingenuous question' commenters:
Tumblr media
Again, going to give this commenter the benefit of the doubt that they aren't just an asshole anti. So you don't know what Thorki is, but you're on AO3, home of All The Relationship Tags. Even if you didn't think to search it there, google exists, and is your friend. Type Thorki in there, and it's not even like you've got to narrow your search or add 'ship' or anything. The top result is the Thorki page of shipping wiki, and the next several links are photos of Thor/Loki. There is literally no other result given on the first page of google.
But LBR, this is likely an anti trying to subtly shame me for shipping Thorki. In which case, I'd invite you to look at my author page and see the types of fics I write regularly, and maybe just take your nonsense elsewhere.
The 'why are you here?' commenters:
Tumblr media
Again, it's not like there's anything wrong with this kind of question! I too have seen PFPs of people on AO3 and been curious myself. The problem is, once again, coming onto one of my works and, without acknowledging the work that I've put so much time and effort into the thing they're commenting on, they just demand an answer.
What's particularly bewildering about this is that it isn't even in the 4 most recent works I've posted. So instead of just seeing my PFP and clicking on the first thing they see and asking there (still a little rude, but maybe more understandable??) it seems they were here to look at my work, and in doing so saw my PFP, and decided to ask.
Look, there's a way to ask these kinds of questions, young folks, and so I present to you
The proper way to ask a question commenter <3 :
Tumblr media
Look at that! The commenter was able to get their question answered, and I was delighted to respond to them, because they took a few lines to tell me that they'd appreciated the work it pertains to. Honestly, I don't even need that much, although it's sincerely appreciated and makes my day. But even a simple "Loved the story, it was a lot of fun. BTW--that house..." would be cool.
We've all had those times when we get a burning question reading the fic--
"Is it possible they were referencing those lyrics??? I mean, it's not a very popular song, but it seems so obvious!!!" (probably, and the author is likely gonna be super excited you know that song, too)
"Did that line mean to insinuate what it did? Is that foreshadowing? Are those characters secretly screwing?" (the author may play coy, or they might be super excited you picked up on the thing they were hinting, or maybe they'll be annoyed you ruined the surprise?? but that's on them being brought up in the Marvel era of no spoilers)
Or indeed the questions about PFP or what house/city/clothing you used as reference.
But unless you're a regular commenter, popping up with just that question is abrupt at best, and shows a lack of common courtesy. Like, okay. Imagine running up to your favourite actor/singer/author in public and instead of saying "I'm a huge fan/I loved X/you're an amazing author/lyricist/actor/etc", you just immediately start bombarding them with questions "When are you going to write a new song/What did you mean on page 126 when you said/why did you decide to write these two characters together/etc etc."
Just imagine that you are addressing a living person with real human feelings, and ask yourself, if I were talking to them face to face, would this be an acceptable way to address/open a conversation with a stranger.
