I think it's insane that after the final Agni Kai, Zuko was able to tank a hyper-powered lightning bolt (I mean, tank in the way he was still moving after getting hit, even if it was just groans of pain and slight twitching). He just got healed by Katara for about 5 seconds and was A-OK afterward.
When Aang got struck by lightning, he was in a coma for like what? Almost a month? And you're telling me Zuko gets struck by lightning, and 5 minutes later, is walking around like it never happened? Sorry, I can't believe that.
But Sno, you say, Aang was in his most fragile state. Of course, he was in a month long coma after he basically died. Okay, and I think that Zuko being hit by a lightning bolt 100x more powerful than the one Aang got hit by would also put Zuko in a coma; especially because Katara doesn't have the spirit water to bring him back to life. Unlike Aang, Zuko only gets regular water, not magic water, to heal him.
"But, but Zuko redirected it," you say. Uh no, Zuko wasn't grounded, so that shit still hit him like a damn truck. He redirected some of it, but not all of it. I would probably say that it burnt him from the inside out. It's a miracle that in LOK, that man is still kicking it and being a badass in his early 90s. He should have serious heart issues, if not have died in his 70s at the absolute latest. The man should not be kicking ass in the poles. He should be on bed rest.
In conclusion, Zuko should have been in a coma for like at least a year (realistically he should be dead, but this is a kids show where the main characters aren't allowed to die, so I'll let it slide) and I will stand by that.
If you wanna read how the creators could have worked with comatose Zuko, read under the cut. If not, then I hope you enjoyed my little rant. This post got longer than I thought.
Here's how the creators could have dealt with comatose Zuko and the potential storylines our other favorites could have had at the end of book 3 and a majority of the potential and nonexistent book 4:
Aang is having to deal with the consequences of Ozai being left alive, as I'm sure the Earth Kingdom and the Water Tribes would not like that fact. As well as their newest Fire Lord currently being in a comatose state. They barely trusted Zuko. Are you telling me they're gonna trust The Dragon of the West? (More on this at the end) And maybe Aang would actually get some character development, unlike in season 3.
I don't think Sokka, Suki, and Toph would have storylines that center Zuko all that much, but they would also definitely be mourning the semi-loss of Zuko along with whatever storyline they get. Maybe Sokka and Suki can have conflict in their relationship now that the war is over and they might physically have to go their own ways. Toph can probably wonder where she can go from here. Will she try and reconcile with her parents again? Will she travel with Aang once Zuko wakes up? Will she stay in the Fire Nation and help Zuko sniff out traitors with her seismic sense? Needless to say, the 3 of them have endless opportunities.
Katara is now dealing with the guilt of not only having put Zuko in that position in the first place, but also not being able to fully heal him (even though he would have done that for anyone, not just her). And if you're a Zutara shipper, like myself, even realizing potential feelings and the conflict that comes with that. Or if we still wanna go through with the canon ending of Kataang, have her navigate her feelings about Aang properly and not whatever that original canon ending was. And if we wanna go the "Katara doesn't need a man" route (my personal favorite despite my shipping tendencies), she could try and navigate where she goes from here, like Toph. Obviously, she'll go back to the Southern Water Tribe and help out there, but what comes after they've recovered? She's not the type to stand by and settle when there are other people who need her help. Will she go to the Earth Kingdom and help rebuild there? Go to the Fire Nation and help out there? Become an ambassador of the Southern Water Tribe to help better relations with the other nations? (My personal favorite) The possibilities are endless for her.
But you know who would be affected the most? Iroh. Not only did he (kinda) lose his nephew, who was his second son, but he now has to deal with the diplomatic repercussions of his past as a general of the Fire Nation. Like I said before, the Earth Kingdom and the Water Tribes barely trusted Zuko; no way in hell are they gonna trust the man that laid seige to Ba Sing Se for nearly 2 whole years, regardless if he's the reason the city was freed from Fire Nation control. The pressure Iroh would feel from advisors regarding the fact that his only heir is comatose would increasingly get worse as the months go by. We know that Zuko will wake up, but Iroh and the rest of the cast don't. Iroh is dealing with the fracturing Fire Nation and pressure from the Earth Kingdom and the Water Tribes, all while his son is in a coma. He could see what he was going to have Zuko face by himself with no support around him. What would he do with Ozai? Would be a major question throughout the season.
Of course, in the end, Zuko wakes up because we want a happy ending for them all. But the turmoil we could have gotten in the end would have been *chefs kiss*

Lala
When you realize you have a new weapon to make fun of your sister, you have to use it even though for you it isn't a weapon. At least that's how Zuko thinks about it.
Tumblr media
Azula: I’m going to kill your friends and my brother.
Katara: Your brother is also my friend.
Azula: But it’s a different crime. And is that what you are worried about in the whole sentence?
Katara: You want to kill them a lot. Nothing new. But don’t.
Azula: Ugh.
Katara:
Azula: At least you could ask why.
Katara: Fine. Why do you want to kill them this time sweetheart?
Azula: I’m going to ignore your tone. They discovered the “Lala”.
Katara: Is another weird tradition of the Fire Nation or..?
Azula: It’s Zuko’s Zuzu.
Katara: Oh that Lala. I think it is cute. But isn’t new, right? Zuko calls you that a lot.
Azula: To them it is. And Zuko is enjoying it.
Tumblr media
Sokka: When you come back to the Southern Water Tribe I’m going to force you to do penguin sledding.
Azula: Why would I eve-
Zuko: Hey buddies.
Azula: Don’t call me buddy ever again.
Zuko: Ok Lala.
Sokka: We were-
Sokka: Wait what, Lala? What is a Lala?
Zuko: You know Zuzu?
Sokka: Are you asking me if I know you? Did you hit your head or something?
Zuko: Not dumbass, the nickname. Azula calls me that all of the time.
Azula: We know, Zuzu. So penguin sledding?
Sokka: Forget that. Did he just call you Lala? Can I call you Lala? Oh god the mighty Azula, princess of the Fire Nation…AND WE CAN CALL YOU LALA.
[Azula proceeds to electrocute Sokka]
Zuko: That was unnecessary.
Azula, getting ready to throw another lightning:
Zuko: LALA STOP IT
Tumblr media
Aang: Azula really did a great job in the meeting.
Zuko: She’s actually really good but she’s really mean.
Aang: Yeah, although I was thankful when she made all of those councilors shut up.
Azula: My pleasure Avatar. I always love to make a grown up man cry. Ask Zuzu.
Zuko: She certainly does. Especially when I’m in that group.
Aang: Anyway thanks for today. Right?
Zuko: Yes, thanks to Lala now we only have like 5 boring meetings to go.
Aang: Wait.
Zuko: There’s more?!
Azula: Oh no.
Aang, grinning: Did he just call you Lala? That’s so cute.
Azula:
Zuko: See Azula, that's so cute. You should appreciate it.
Azula: I will deal with Zuzu later but if you want to use that word again Avatar let me remind you I already killed you once.
Zuko: If you kill him now Katara would break up with you.
Azula: SHUT UP DUMB DUMB *goes away*
Zuko: That’s worse than Lala. But at least she’s angry for the next meeting.
Aang: The next meeting it’s going to be awesome.
Tumblr media
Suki: All of my warriors are spread inside the festival so we are protected.
Zuko: Great. All set then.
Azula: Wait, what about the harbor?
Suki: We are protecting a festival inside the city.
Azula: If I want to attack a festival I would do it through the harbor cause nobody would be there. You bring a few water benders or a Katara and break it all in like 5 minutes.
Suki: I hate to say this but you’re right. Let’s relocate some of the girls.
Zuko: Good job Lala.
Azula:
Suki:
Azula: I’m honestly more angry by the fact you just praise me like a dog than the nickname.
Suki: Yeah Zuko. We’re grown ups.
Zuko: But-
Zuko: Suki, I am giving you a chance to laugh at Azula’s expenses.
Azula: And she’s a grown woman who is doing her job. Shush.
Suki: Yeah Zuko I’m busy now. When I finish I can laugh and use the Lala.
Zuko: It doesn’t feel like a victory.
Tumblr media
[After sparring time with Azula]
Toph: I needed that. Being police is awful.
Azula: Well you are a gun for the government.
Toph: You are part of the government.
Azula: Not the government that has you as chief.
Toph: You and I? In the same government? We will have to stop a coup like every day.
Zuko: But unfortunately you both will stop them.
Azula: Of course we will, Zuzu.
Toph: What are you doing here, Zuzu?
Zuko: Came to see why we were hearing two people fight to death on a Wednesday afternoon.
Toph: I was beating a princess’ ass.
Zuko: And also Lala, can you look at these scrolls? I need a second opinion.
Azula: Sure let’s me clea-
Toph: LALA.
Azula: Shit.
Toph: HE CALLED YOU LALA. IT SOUNDS LIKE A FUCKING CHILD SONG.
Toph: ZUZU AND LALA I CAN’T.
[Toph is rolling while she’s laughing]
Zuko: For once, I didn’t say it to bother you.
Azula: For once, I believe you.
Zuko: I think she can’t breathe.
Azula: Whether she dies because she can’t breathe or she feels more relaxed after a good laugh, she deserves it.
Tumblr media
Azula: I swear to Agni.
Mai: Don’t be dramatic.
Ty lee: Why are you so angry? It never bothered you so much before, Zuko has been calling you Lala for years. It’s cute.
Azula: I mean it doesn’t bother me if Zuko calls me that. But them. Feels like I’m a joke.
Mai: Lala sounds like a joke.
Azula:
Ty lee: I think what’s bothering you so much is the exclusivity.
Azula: Explain yourself.
Ty lee: When he calls you Lala it comes from your “bond”. When any other person calls you Lala they are probably trying to laugh at your cost.
Mai: That’s deeply complicated with only having 2 lines of information.
Ty lee: I manage all the feelings in this group. I’m well trained.
Tumblr media
(many years ago)
Zuko: Why can’t you stop calling me that stupid name?!
Azula: Zuzu, it's cute. Nobody calls you Zuzu. I’m the only one who does it.
Zuko: Oh. That’s…okay you can call me Zuzu but
Azula: What?
Zuko, grinning: I’m calling you Lala cause nobody would call you that.
Azula: WHAT! NO! ZUZU.

Hello!, I hope your day/night is going well!, I thought of something to request and just wanted to shoot my shot lol!
- How about some headcanons of possessive yandere ty Lee?
- // oh and I just wanted to ask this in case your comfy with writing team up yandere scenario's if not I totally understand!-//
-Maybe a scenario where the fire nation squad/ zuko, Azula, mei and ty Lee are all yandere for the reader?
/ I totally understand if you don't vibe with these requests! No pressure to do them just wanted to stress that hgbgb, anyways have a lovely day/night :) /
I write Polygamous stuff, but I don't know if it's the best, but I can always try. This has been in the drafts since: July 14, 2022 [Almost a full year... I'm so sorry. You've probably forgot you requested this because it's been so long] (3rd oldest draft and oldest ask)
Tumblr media
[Possessive] Ty Lee
She doesn't understand why you get so mad that she only wants you to pay attention to her
Granted multiple people flirt with her, but she always shuts them down
She watches you and uses her abilities to get to high places to see you
If you're a bender, she uses her Chi Block on you
She's very giddy and loves being with you
She loves partying w/ you and taking you places
She doesn't want you to meet her sisters, in fear of you comparing them to each other
She wants to be herself with you
She's ecstatic and always energized
She always defends you when someone tries to make you look dumb
Unlike Mai, she would trade the other nations if they kidnapped you, because she loves you more than anything else in the world
Though, she is like Mai in the sense she'll betray Azula, because she loves you more than she fears her
Tumblr media
Azula, Mai, Ty Lee, and Zuko
You were at first with Ty Lee
Though, you two were never official
You two just bonded better than the rest of them
Zuko and Mai became protective over you, seeing you repeatedly get hurt
Azula just saw you as stupid and she liked humiliating you
Zuko saw himself in you and wanted to protect you from Azula
^Mai was jealous at first, but soon realized you weren't enemies, but friends. You deserved to be protected from the monster that is Azula
You love Azula, because you've realized that she's never really had love in her life [It's more out of pity]
You go with them everywhere, though this gets you a lot hurt
They always get you, but then Azula becomes a little more anxious about letting you come
Azula would never tell you, but she loves you more than anything in the world and that scares her
Ty Lee just thinks your fun, but she doesn't really form a complex feeling for you. She just likes that you're fun
Mai and Zuko see themselves as your protector, especially against Azula. They kind of act like your parents, but they're both distant emotionally, but you definitely open them up
Tumblr media
The GAang [Katara, Sokka, Aang, and Toph]
Katara was the first to fall for you, but not the first to tell you her feelings
It's probably Sokka who tells you
But you don't take it seriously, because he's a flirter
Toph is mean to you and is kind of like a big bully
Aang is nice and treats you like he's known you forever
You both just click so well
When Toph and Katara fight, you are brought into their fights, because they want you to be on their side
"I think Sokka is calling me-"
You don't want to catch that smoke
You're probably the most scared of Katara, she reminds you of a scary mother, but don't tell her, because she wants you to see her as a lover not a mother
It took you the longest to get close to Toph, because she has walls up and it's hard to get them down
You bring up her being blind and she get super angry and you quickly blush in embarrassment
^ You do try and watch it and be more considerate of her, but she also doesn't want you to treat her different. Just treat her like the rest. Once you do, she'll let you in
Aang and Sokka make fools themselves in front of you, because they're not good with crushes, no matter how smooth Sokka is
Though you do all get along better than the relationship with the fire nation group [Ty Lee, Azula, Zuko, and Mai]
You're very close and it's hard to break you apart

ATLA as things I’ve said or heard this week :)
I haven’t seen one of these in a while so I decided it was a necessity and made one myself!
Aang: “Listen, I don’t normally condone violence but I would LOVE to square up with my Zionist professor.”
Katara: “What do you MEAN I have to take biomedical ethics? How are those any different from the human research ethics I already know?!”
Sokka: “What’s thermodynamics? Is it hard? Eh, I’ll just take it for my physics elective.”
Toph: “The flannel really isn’t helping your case. Just admit you’re a lesbian stereotype.”
Iroh: “Can you please eat some real food?”
Zuko: “Donuts and Pringles ARE REAL FOOD!”
Suki: “Hey Dr. Smith, have you heard of the 4b movement?” *proceeds to spend the next five minutes of class explaining it*
Azula: “I knew you were a lesbian the second you told me that you cut your own bangs.”
Mai: “So we know *human ancestor I forgot the name of* was cannibalistic. And we have plenty of evidence on child bones. What about old people? The elderly die too, you know.”
Ty Lee: “Bitch I cried to the new Chappell Roan song for an hour last night! I want to recommend it to my ex situationship who still says she’s straight.”

Twins AU
Sweet 16 Birthday part 2
Zuko: Everyone find a seat. Azula's out for a jog but I brought us some time. She always jog to the end of her playlists so I added six more songs.
Zuko: You are all here because you are Azula's best friends and family and I want you to help me throw a surprise party for her! But you have to keep it a secret.
Zuko, looking at his parents: I know that won't be a problem for you two.
Ozai and Ursa: ಠ_ಠ
Kiyi: Mom said Azula doesn't want a party this year.
Zuko: I know my twin. She's devasted and we're gonna fix it!
Ursa: That's very sweet.
Ozai: We'll do anything to help.
Zuko: Of course you will. You're totally on the hook for this.
Ozai and Ursa: (T_T)
Sokka: I'm in! I want Azula's Sweet 16 to be as amazing as her!
Ozai: Careful.
Sokka, straightening up: Right! Sorry!
Zuko: Sokka, Mai, and Ty Lee, I want you to take Azula out Friday night while the rest of us get ready for the party. Don't bring her back until midnight because that's when actually birthday is.
Ursa: Midnight? Isn't that awfully late for a party?
Zuko: You mean like 16 years late, mom?
Ursa: Midnight party! Fun!
[Later]
Azula: Thanks for taking me out guys.
Sokka: No problem.
Ty Lee: Yeah it was fun!
Mai, sarcastic: Whoo...
Azula: I feel kind of bad though. I've never missed Zuko's birthday before. We should head back. It's late anyway.
Others: !!!
Sokka: I have an idea!
[After spending the last part of the night stalling]
Azula, rushing to the front door: Ugh! It's midnight! And 16 wrong turns?! Really Sokka?!
Sokka: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Azula: And I've never heard of that law that says you have to go 5 miles per hour past a graveyard!
Mai: That's just showing respect.
Azula: Wait a second. I don't hear the tsungi horn and melodramatic poetry. You guys! I missed Zuko's birthday!
Azula: *Goes inside and turns on light.*
Sokka, Ty Lee, and Mai: SUR- *sees nobody there*
Sokka: SSSSupper was great at Jasmine Dragon!
Azula: Where is everyone?
[Goes to the backyard and sees decorations]
Everyone: SURPISE!!!
Sokka, Ty Lee, and Mai: *runs in*
Ty Lee: We missed saying surprise? Are you kidding me?!
Zuko: Happy Sweet 16 Azula!
Azula: Wait this is all for me? Where's your theater party?
Zuko: There was no party. I played you. Don't feel bad though. I am a day older.
Azula: *laughs*
Mai: *clears throat* Remember us? The people you were screaming at the whole way past the graveyard.
Azula: You guys were all in on this?
Ty Lee: Suprise! *fist pumps* Yes!
Azula: Zuzu, mini golf? It's just like old times.
Zuko: We got so wrapped up in what party we wanted, we forgot the best part. Doing it together.
Ursa: That's what I said!
Ozai, patting her shoulder: Not now.
Ursa: Anyway, we made you a cake!
Azula: A Kuai ball cake?!
Ursa: 16 layers of buttercream and guilt! Mama's done. Time for my twins to get their party on! *dances*
Everyone:
Azula: Mom! We've forgiven you. Stop punishing us!
Ozai: Azula, we even got you a number six jersey because we figured you would want to change your number.
Azula: Actually, I've decided to stick with the number five. That's the day my best friend was born.
Zuko: *smiles*
Azula: Help me blow out these candles!
Zuko: Wait, let me get my phone. We gotta get a video of this! *leaves*
Kiyi: Video? Then we have to have the windmill going. Dad, would you do the honors.
Ozai: *Presses button*
Azula: I love it!
Ozai: We did a good thing today.
Kiyi: See what happens when you listen to me.
[Windmill starts going super fast and destroys the decorations and cake]
Azula: We have to turn this thing off!!!
Sokka: Don't worry birthday girl! *grabs her hand* Your hero's here!
Sokka: *Fights against the wind*
Azula: *pulls plug* Hey superhero, plug's right here.
Sokka: 👍
Zuko: *Returns and sees everyone disheveled and covered in birthday cake*
Zuko: o_o

The narrative was sadistic with Azula.
I have no other word for it.
Her mother abandoned her to save Zuko.
Her uncle abandoned her to save Zuko.
Mai abandoned her for Zuko.
She had no good influence left in her life to help her. They all left her in Ozai's care to help Zuko.
She needed guidance and Iroh only helped his nephew. The only time he talks about his niece it's to say to Zuko : "No don't try to make up with your sister, she is crazy, and she needs to go down." Okay dude.
Earlier you were showing kindness to a random thief while he threatened you with a knife. Why can't you show the same kindness to your fourteen year old niece.
And you know, ignoring Azula's humanity doesn't make it disappear. It just makes the characters neglecting her seem like terrible people in contrast.
Her uncle should have empathized with her, and telling Zuko to give up on his sister wasn't right.
Her mother should have said something to her before abandoning her forever, but Azula got nothing. Did she even like her daughter? It was unclear. The only time she interacted with her daughter in the show was to scold her.
Zuko never made the effort to be nice to her. He saw her crying and breaking down and just watched.
In the end, Azula is probably kept captive in the palace somewhere on her own, surely not recovering well from her breakdown, while everyone else celebrate. Iroh doesn't use the opportunity to help her of course. He just plays his Tsungi horn instead. Nor does Zuko, he'd rather make tea. And Mai and Ty Lee have moved on, they probably forgot Azula existed like everyone else.
This is so wrong.

Hey what are your avatar otps besides azulaang?
oh umm… I wouldn’t call them OTPs since that is exclusively Azulaang, but my bi Azula headcanon lives in a variety of ships. Azutara, Azuki, Maizula… not Tyzula tbh because that feels like… imbalanced? and not Tophzula because they are menace-besties but not romantic, but with any of the other girls I think it could be great. Azutara has the enemies to lovers from Azulaang but with more spice and less forgiveness, they‘d tear eachother apart first but that makes it even sweeter if they eventually fall in love. Azuki is kind of different because Suki is more rational and holds less of an emotional grudge, it‘d be difficult for Azula to earn her trust but she would not be openly hostile to her unless necessary. I imagine this one could only happen if Azula is already in the middle or post redemption though, because Suki would not put up with any EtL shit. I guess that is exactly why it intrigues me too, I feel Suki would be more willing to give Azula a chance, more than Katara for example, but at the same time it would be impossibly hard to win her trust and I‘d like to see if Zula can manage it. Lastly Maizula, and I prefer this one over Tyzula because I feel Mai is more capable of holding her own against Azula in a relationship. It’s a complicated version of childhood friends to lovers and I‘m kind of here for it. No idea how it would work though lol.
Aside from Azula ships, I think Zutara is pretty cool and works well alongside Azulaang. Kataang is kinda cool in theory too, but I don’t like shipping Aang with anyone except Azula, it feels wrong 🤷‍♂️ The only other Aang ship I can imagine liking is Zukaang, but I don’t talk about it much.
Oh and I have to give a shoutout to Sokkla, I don’t particularly vibe with it but they’re the sister ship to Azulaang and I do see the potential of the two genius strategists, so if Aang didn’t exist I would definitely ship Sokkla instead. Nothing but love to the comrades over there. 🫶🏼
edit: totally forgot this but I actually also love Tylaang aka Ty-Lee and Aang, it just has absolutely no fandom so it’s hard to get the ball rolling. I just feel they would be such a wholesome bubbly cute ship, and I dig the Ty-Lee airbender ancestry theory so she‘d love to learn all about airbender customs and they‘d have so much fun and probably a huge family 😅 anyway I think party of why I ship this is just because I think these two deserve the world and it represents my wish for them to be totally carefree and happy. you can also add Azula and make this a throuple, I think that would work because you have Tyzula as the polar opposites and Aang in the middle to bridge the gap.
speaking of throuples I enjoy the idea of… Azutaraang? (Azula/Katara/Aang) but it is very difficult to make work. The only way I can see it is if Azula and Katara fall in love first because nothing good could come of them fighting over Aang. or maybe I could see like a stranded on a deserted island AU where the three of them have to work together and learn to rely on eachother… idk, difficult but not impossible.
Oh and I love Zuki too (Zuko x Zuki) …damn I guess I do have quite a few non-Azulaang ships. anyway this is essentially a bodyguard AU and it’s actually my favorite Zuko ship (sorry Zutara) not much to say about it cuz I’ve barely engaged with it, but I love the idea and think they would just work really well together. I also can see this as a throuple with Sokka again. I don’t really vibe with Zukka on their own but if you add Suki then I love it, because Suki deserves two good boys and it’s more fun for everyone involved if those two good boys are in love with eachother too.
final edit hopefully: Sokka Azula Aang is good too, for the same reasons listed for Zuko Suki Sokka, I swear that’s it now. goodbye lol.

5 hcs for any Avatar AU, idc which, all of the ones I've read from you are great!
I have chosen my airbender Mai universe. Continued from: [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], and [Link].
1. Azula does not keep Mai and Ty Lee at the Boiling Rock. The Warden is Mai's uncle, after all, and her treason saved his life no less than Zuko's. The two are instead taken to the tower prison at the capital. Azula does not visit them on the journey back to the capital, spent, perversely, locked in their shared well appointed cabin. For all they have committed treason, Mai and Ty Lee are left with the trappings of their noble, privileged childhoods, locked in their room like naughty schoolgirls. It gives them time to think on what will happen to them, on the enormity of the choice they both made. It gives them time to wonder when, if, their trial will take place, whether they will be sentenced to death, what will Azula do? So they wait and they worry, and Azula doesn't come.
2. They are marched up to the prison tower, stripped, searched, Mai's less obvious knives are finally taken from her, and they are handed the prison rags which will serve as their uniforms. Mai's brain is buzzing and spinning with a thousand thoughts, a thousand ways she could break out, shove themselves to the forefront of her mind, nearly all of which would involve airbending. The prison feels like it's made out of paper. But she can't airbend. She doesn't know what is happening to her family. She can't risk them. But she doesn't know what Azula is doing to them. This whole time she has traveled with Azula, the threat that she would hurt them, kill them, if Mai stepped out of line, has hung over her, and now, well, she sure stepped out of line. But she can't escape, because what if they're fine? The prison is made of paper, and Mai has to be careful not to tear it.
3. They are locked in their cell, together, which feels like an oversight. Wouldn't it be better to keep them alone and isolated? But no, they are together. And one room over, that Ty Lee can hear through the window at the back of their cell, are the Kyoshi Warriors. Predictably, Ty Lee starts trying to make friends. With the people who they helped Azula capture and imprison. Of course she does. And because she's Ty Lee, she succeeds. She weathers their anger, and self-righteous well-what-did-you-think-would-happens, and smiles and laughs until they soften to her. She's a wonder, honestly. Mai has no idea how she does it, only that she never would be able to pull it off, not in a million years.
4. Through it all, Azula doesn't come. She stays away, and Mai is glad for it. But she also isn't. It scares her. She didn't expect it. It leaves her on edge. She paces their little cell long into the night. Then, one evening, Azula turns up like a bad coin, disheveled, hair ragged, looking like neither of them have ever seen her, her air of untouchable perfection nowhere to be seen. She yells at them and blames them for everything that happened since she put them in there, her voice more and more... out of control. Her tone, her volume, the pitch, are as wild as her hair and her eyes, and as she rants, she lets more and more slip about the world outside the prison, and Ty Lee tries to soothe her, practically on instinct, and Mai doesn't. She tries to stay quiet and in the back. It's also on instinct. But Azula never mentions their families, and Mai starts to hope that Azula forgot their families exist. Either way, after Azula leaves, Mai feels even more on edge than before. That night, she whispers her secret to Ty Lee. When Ty Lee gasps in the darkness, that soft little sound is as loud as a thunderclap. And then Ty Lee squeezes her, and Mai tries to push her away and tell her she doesn't like hugs, but just this once, Ty Lee holds her, and tells her she will never tell.
5. And then the world turns on its axis once again, and Mai, Ty Lee, and the Kyoshi Warriors are set free, and Ozai takes their place. The prison guards scramble around like termite-ants whose mound have been kicked over, and Mai, Ty Lee, and the rest beat a hasty exit before anyone can change their mind. Mai runs to her family townhouse while Ty Lee goes off with the Kyoshi Warriors to meet Suki, their leader. She stands in her room in an empty house, and washes and dresses as quickly as she can, her hands putting her hair into order with quick, practiced motions she doesn't have to think about. Zuko knows. Zuko is Firelord now, and he knows about her airbending. Zuko's friends know. The Avatar knows. And in a few minutes, she's going to have to walk out the door and deal with that. The metal knob is cold and hard under her fingers as she turns it open.

I think what bothered me about Maiko was how half assed it actually was, and how it had wayyy too little scenes to be considered good or well written AT ALL. User @sokkastyles made a lot of good points concerning how badly written Maiko was, and how it did Mai’s character dirty. But what makes it so funny to me is how much lack of scenes there are for it to be good- let me explain:
We never get Mai’s reaction to Zuko’s banishment. None at all. It’s almost like the writers didn’t even plan this and only mashed them together due to them being single. We see her smirk at the thought of seeing him yes, but there’s no concern over Zuko literally being thrown in prison or possibly killed. I’m not saying Mai’s a bad person but…wouldn’t you worry about your partner? Or couldn’t the writers show her reaction to Zuko literally being burned and humiliated?
Where was the build up besides ONE literal flashback that the majority of people I know forgot about??? Literally, that kiss in episode 1 of Book 3 was out of NOWHERE- it felt like the writers needed to give him a love interest so they had Mai kiss him out of desperation. 😭 But even then with that flashback it was nowhere near convincing that Zuko loved her since childhood or something. And even for Mai it was honestly….eh. It’s a cute childhood crush thing where she may find hm attractive, yes. However how is this supposed to convince me it’s long term like they want me to believe? Plus, we literally see Zuko dislike it when Azula and Ty Lee tease them about being together. There’s no implications of him deep down liking Mai or anything in that flashback. Just him getting angry at it in fact.
Where tf were the scenes of Zuko worrying for Mai after the Boiling Rock? This one I can maybe understand due to maybe not enough runtime but…Wouldn’t you worry for someone you love if they’re going to be imprisoned and possibly punished heavily by your crazy sister??? He knows what Azula is capable of along with the Boiling Rock prison in general. So why didn’t we get any scenes of him worrying for her? If the writers wanted to really convince me on their relationship they could’ve at least give me a scene of him either freeing her or worrying for her afterwards LMAO. “Erm maybe offscreen” yeah, keyword: MAYBE.
Mai never confronted the Fire Nation was wrong. Literally, when did she confront the Fire Nation was wrong? Y’all expect me to believe she’s right for him when she didn’t even see that the Fire Nation was wrong? That’s like if a feminist were to date a man who didn’t support women’s rights- it’s just….blegh. And you wouldn’t support that relationship. Literally, where did she confront Ozai was wrong? She only saved Zuko because she “loved” him. But how are they supposed to be compatible due to those opposing ideals? Seems boring and really lazy ass writing that doesn’t confront those points lmao. “She probably realized it in the room when Zuko told her” he only said “that’s not how I see it” when she told him he was betraying his country. We don’t see a scene where Mai suddenly realizes the Fire Nation is bad. “Maybe offscreen” yeah, MAYBE. And that sort of proves my point Maiko is badly written and doesn’t have enough scenes to support it or make it good.
I can go more into depth on how multiple parts of the writing were flawed whether it be the characters or just the ship in general. However I won’t make this too long and will stop here. Overall, I feel Maiko could’ve had WAY more scenes to sell it to me or be better written. It’s not just the toxic moments that annoy me, but also the lack of scenes and writing. While I do agree it had potential, elements such as bad writing, too little time, etc made it badly written and half assed to me. And I hope Maiko shippers can respect my opinions and thoughts.

my thoughts on Netflix's ATLA live action
Tumblr media
As an adult who watched this show growing up and was there for the countdown to the comet (iykyk!!) I have thoughts!
Best: Zuko. angsty, teenage boy depression, father issues, determined to a self-destructive degree. The actor is great at capturing all these facets of Zuko's conflicting, complex character. Really great with the choreography/martial arts too. Its not easy to pull off Zuko's mostly shaven but with a ponytail haircut, but this actor manages it. And yes, the opening scene with him seeing the beam of light from the iceberg and saying, "Finally." did give me some chills. Honestly the actor just captures Zuko really well. Great casting.
Worst: Katara. has the personality of an elegant yet unassuming well watered house plant. Its more because of the writing than the actress… she's doing her best with this depressing egg whites version of Katara she's had thrusted upon her. It's not going to be convincing when Toph comes along next season and calls her sugar queen.
Aang: never has any fun. spends every episode staring into the distance being sorrowful and melancholic. *teardrop rolls down cheek* he is a depressed 40 year old in the body of a 12 year old. He has no fun side to him anymore- an important side for a 12 year old kid to have! Also spends the entirety of season one (you know, titled "water"!) and doesn't learn a lick of waterbending, not even from Katara, who spends a lot of it learning from the waterbending scroll!! Why??? However the actor is doing a great job and I think he captures Aang's essence really well. He is young and I think next season he will improve a lot.
Sokka: I almost forgot to write thoughts down for him, which I think says more than anything else. He's essentially been boiled down to the same old overprotective big brother, but now he comes complete with daddy issues. It's a little hilarious that Katara's worst memory is watching her mom get burned alive by a firebender soldier while Sokka's is hearing his dad say he's disappointed with him. Kind of ruins the moment tbh. They really took all the fun aspects of the main Gaang and dulled them down completely, its sad. At least he's cute though- and imo, the chemistry with Suki's actress was there.
The previous avatars: every single one meets Aang just to berate & yell at him and tell him he shouldn't have friends and where has he been for the past 100 years without giving him a second to speak. What?? Sadly it seems any dignity, grace, or wisdom the previous avatars had in the original, has been completely wiped out in this live action. Also, this idea of them telling Aang about things that are going to happen makes no sense. Did no previous avatar tell Roku his friend was going to betray him, let him die on the island, and start a 100 year long war? Also the idea of Aang being able to communicate ONLY if he's in one of their temples is stupid. What is the point of the avatar state, then? Will Roku be able to teach him anything at all?
Princess Yue: yes I wrote an entire paragraph about her lol. She is one of my favorite minor characters. I think they wanted her to look so accurate to her original counterpart that she just looks too much like a cosplayer, with such a stiff and lifeless looking wig. This is the one and only time I will concede I prefer M. Night's version of Yue as far as costuming goes, though both funnily enough forget her eyebrows shouldn't be dark. The actress was fine. But this version of Yue is quite a different person from og Yue, I can't really compare. Plus, it feels like we see her for a good 10 minutes before she dies for the moon spirit. I couldn't buy into her and Sokka having feelings for each other because it felt like they knew each other for a good 2 hours at most. Ideally, I think these two versions kind of fused together would be perfect.
Tumblr media
Azula/Mai/Ty Lee: Grouping them together because. Azula is the most unconvincing out of the characters for me. I don't buy that this girl is supposed to be the princess Azula for a second. I'm neither intrigued nor intimidated, and that's pretty bad as Azula was one of my top favorite characters from the original. The costume is fine, the wig feels cheap, her dialogue is horrendous, the actress can't convince me. Azula isn't smart or cunning, sharp, or collected, and her "working with Zhao" just made her look dumb when the entire plan flopped. She is a whiny, petulant little girl stamping her feet in every other scene. It's not for me. Also, the way her relationship with Ozai is depicted here makes Ozai look like a loser, too. It's like they want us to not be afraid of either of them.
As for Mai and Ty Lee. Ty Lee is fine. She looks okay, the actress is fine for how little we see her. On Mai, the wig is just so bad I don't get what happened. It's like they're struggling on the line of being realistic with the styling, or leaning completely in cartoon-character-came-to-life. I don't think the actress for Mai here was a good choice.
Dialogue: the worst part of this show. When they're not completely quoting word for word from the original, it's.. just bad. Everything is always exposition and thats not good. The few moments that aren't are just... idk.
CGI: not bad. I was expecting worse. Fire, earth, and air all look great. Water feels a little slow, mostly when its just water and not ice but that can be improved I assume. Koh was pretty cool, as was Wan Shi Tong.
Settings: Beautiful!! Omashu looked great. South and North water tribes looked great. Ozai's throne room looked incredible and I was annoyed every time we see it, he is just standing around and not sitting on his throne. It just reminded me how amazing the buildup to Ozai and Azula's reveals were in og season 1.
Costume: Its either a hit or a miss. There's strangley not much in between. Aang, Katara, Sokka, Zuko, Iroh, June, Ozai, Jet, Suki, the Kyoshi warriors, all look pretty great. Then you have characters like Azula, Mai, or Yue, who just look like half decent cosplayers. It kind of takes you out of the moment when it looks like the person is a cartoon character, rather than just a normal person. For example, compare how Katara looks compared to Azula.
Music: of course it was fantastic. A lot of it (I think most) was from the original show, which has one of the greatest soundtracks an animated show has ever had imo.
Final thoughts: Ultimately, it was kind of what I was expecting. You can't condense 20+ episodes worth of development into 8 and expect it all to flow perfectly. However, there are also a lot of changes that really don't make sense to me. I am very curious to know how on earth they will do seasons 2 and 3, as season 1 is the slowest in pace compared to the next two seasons. The original's finale was split into four episodes! Unless they add more episodes for next season, it's going to be a big jumbled mess of lore being shoved into our faces. I am also concerned about Toph. The Gaang so far has been stripped of their fun/unique personality traits. Is Toph going to be the same?

just an assortment of random thoughts i haven't yet expressed on here:
aside from the fact that idk why they felt the need to name the village, them naming the village gives the impression that it's just one village. rather then, you know, all that's left from the southern water tribe
also, it's much larger. and there are other teenagers in it.
my bf had to pause and yell for five minutes about comedic timing because of the scene with sokka and the toddlers. he was right of course but it still hurt
the joke wouldn't have landed anyway because they're not even toddlers
why does everyone take sokka seriously in this show. does his arc mean nothing to you (i know the answer is yes)
this isn't katara i'm not going to dwell on that. it's simply an entirely separate character. there's not even a point in trying to analyze this. another win for misogyny
another thing that made my partner endlessly angry was how katara simply cant waterbend in the first scene, then successfully breaks the fucking iceberg without even being angry or anything, then goes back to not being able to bend.
so many men explain bending to katara in this. im not going to dwell on it there's no point
sokka and the ideal of masculinity get along just fine. he is in fact the ideal of masculinity. not like that was a core theme of his original character or anything
something to be said at how desperately they're trying to make all the characters as likeable as they can. i could smell these 40 year old writers sweat through my screen and i didn't like it
it's also not working because they have no idea who these characters are or what made them good characters
ozai is stupid
i'm actually going to argue that every change they made here was for the worst. all of them. zuko being conscious and talking to aang? bad. the crew being the 41st division? bad. twink jee? bad.
the thing about the 41st division was that zuko didn't manage to save them. they did die. for a show that wants to be "darker" you sure missed some of the more tragic elements of the original
speaking of which, the only moments that actually made me feel something were zuko's scenes (and sometimes iroh's). dallas liu you're a legend and an icon
katara actively killed kya ok yeah sure this makes sense
the spirit world has a thing for sokka. sokka in particular. it's funny. one might even argue that it's narratively significant. you know what never mind
they're not planning ahead At All. they took some of the most essential moments from later seasons and just threw them at us in season one. the later episodes are not going to make sense. i hope they don't get to make them regardless.
why are they going back to omashu??? sure within the internal logic of the show it makes sense, but narratively, why???? you already did the secret tunnel. mai and ty lee were already introduced. what's left of season 2's omashu episode? doesn't matter i hope they don't make it
i cannot stress enough how nothing in season 2 is going to make sense. azula is already here. zuko has already had a ton of character development. even ozai himself wasn't supposed to be here. season 1's villain is zhao!!! he's the only one we see on screen, he's the only one the characters interact with!!! it's zuko and it's zhao and that's it!!!! you're not supposed to have the whole backstory!!!! you're not supposed to know the rest of them!!! that's what makes seasons 2 and 3 work!!!!! is this just going to be 3 seasons of the same characters fighting each other???
ozai's strategy doesn't work. if you send all your forces to the north who is going to attack omashu? are you implying this was made easier because omashu's army was fighting with the north? they weren't. we saw it we were there. are you implying conquering omashu would have been impossible on a different day because the nwt would have helped them? that literally make no sense, we know it wouldn't happen. all you did was cut your military in half.
i literally forgot momo was there
why is hahn nice. why. explain this to me.
stop setting up stories about the rest of the avatars. we don't care. also did bryke even give you the rights to those
it's really ambitious considering they're failing so hard at making the one season of the one show they needed to make
episode 6 was awful stop gaslighting me
i really hate lok did you guys know. it would sure be fun if they stopped using worldbuilding elements from lok
in a way this is lok. maybe in a way we're all lok
the real avatar was the friends we didn't make along the way

Don't you think your'e a little harsh on Mai? Just because the worst of her parents' or Azula's abuse happened off screen doesn't mean it didn't happen
Actually, since it's a visual medium, it's really important that we see what Mai went through. It's true that in real life, it's hard to tell just from looking in from the outside when someone is being abused, but when you're dealing with storytelling, and especially storytelling in a visual medium, it's very important to show what a character is going through, especially when it's building up to major character moments. Without showing Mai being repressed by her parents, or actually being afraid of Azula, her abrupt change of sides looks flimsy and weak.
Compare Mai's introduction to Ty Lee's (in the exact same episode!!! Did you remember that they were introduced in the same episode, because I sure forgot) We don't know that Ty Lee's parents were abusive or neglectful, per se, but we know immediately that she felt she needed to run away and join the circus so she could build her own sense of self. We see immediately that she fears Azula (and with good reason). We know that she didn't want to join the hunt for Zuko. And all of that development only took about...what? 5 minutes of screen time? We didn't need to have her being pushed around in every episode after that because the storytelling was tight enough and impactful enough that we know that Ty Lee both fears Azula and felt stifled at home. Ty Lee's moment in The Beach felt more honest than Mai's (and Azula's tbh) because the show had already established Ty Lee's motivations and feelings.
Meanwhile, Mai's family life is fine -certainly it's the most stable in the show- she just didn't want to move for her father's job, which in itself is pretty relatable, and I don't know why they didn't just stick with that. She is openly disrespectful to her parents in a way that doesn't suggest her behavior has been overly policed. She even runs with the guards when they think her family has been attacked by resistance fighters, which suggests her parents know she can fight (and more than likely paid to have her trained because those knives cost money). She wasn't afraid of Azula at any point of her time in the show, either. If the writers wanted us to believe Mai, then they needed to give us more than that contrived moment of vulnerability. They showed us that Mai was a strong, independent girl who went along with Azula because she wanted to, but then tried to tell us that she'd had a rough life actually. It wouldn't have taken long to to establish her as feeling repressed and trapped. It didn't need to be anything as horrifying as showing us Zuko's Agni Kai. Like I said, they did it for Ty Lee in like 5 minutes, which leads me to believe that Mai's Tragic Backstory™️©️®️ was made up at the last minute to justify her sudden betrayal of Azula for a cause she didn't believe in for a guy who I truly, truly don't believe she ever really loved and certainly didn't actually know (because she kept shutting down all of his attempts to open up to her). It wouldn't have even taken that much to establish Mai feeling reluctant to follow Azula or feeling repressed. Have her parents actually try to silence her- and I mean actually silence her, not try to cheer her up over a situation that none of them could immediately change. Have her not immediately agree to go with Azula. Heck! Have her change her clothes. I know I've been harping on the clothing thing, but changing clothes is such an easy way to show a character freeing themselves from repression.
(Tangent: Also I think that Mai's esthetic is at least half of the reason why people love her character so much, even though what she's wearing doesn't seem like it's at all out of step with what the rest of the Fire Nation elite wear. Including her mother!!! Ty Lee's outfit is more counter cultural than Mai's.)
Let me reiterate, in real life, no victim of abuse is obligated to behave a certain way or film their abuse in real time or otherwise prove to the general public that they went through what they went through, but the rules for characters in a story are different. We are with them in whatever moments the writers show them in. So that means it's important to see them going through their struggles, if those struggles are going to inform their development. Writers cannot just have the characters announce that they went through things that completely contradict what we saw on screen. Especially when they've proven they know how to effectively establish a character in just a few minutes.
It sucks that Bryke and Nick went so far out of their way to force an ending that didn't make sense, that they screwed up so many characters. Instead of ending with no ship or with Zutara, the People's Choice, they decided to treat Mai in a way that ultimately made her look more despicable than when she was a straight up villain.
