a collection of recent wips: vis dev and character design for the interactive vn I'm starting up, and a halloween pic :- )
oc stuff under the cut (*`・ω-)ノ
so if you've been following me for a bit, you've maybe seen me talk about it before, or noticed my tags, or w/e, but I've been in the process of developing a story for the last few years.
I've been calling it hell&highwater.
it's about a witch turned saintkiller turned bartender turned bodyguard, and the saint-to-be who falls in love with her. it has a tarot-based world and magic system, a culture centered around witchcraft and magic, people who can turn into dragons, Arcane Saints, lots of action, and i've made over 300 characters for it so far. most of the characters have three different names (magic !!). and just this last week, I started writing up the script and drawing out thumbnails as I...get ready to actually make the thing.
the wips above are some of designs I've been developing !!
The Magician Supreme, the Mindpalace Witch, Brandy Alexander
The High Priestess Supreme, Riddlewitch, Pantherpulse
The Empress Supreme, the Witched Twilight, Titan Fuego
The Emperor Supreme, Burn the Witch, Kiliman Torre
(and...a Halloween drawing of the protagonists as frankenstein and frankenstein's monster hohho)
i'm definitely going to be posting stuff about it here still, but if you want to see more or ALL i share about it; i'll be doing lots of h&h updates on my patreon (which IS 18+, h&h is going to be for mature audiences. also i'm trying to draw more smut). I've already posted lots of worldbuilding stuff there, and will be doing more as I go !! I rarely show wips but i'm pretty excited about...where all this is going, tbh.
wahoo :- )

Gonna talk about my writing project but in typical ‘dahl talks about their wip’ fashion it’ll be extremely vague and won’t make any sense lol I just really need to say this, especially now that I'm so close to the end and it’s been something I’ve been feeling for a while too
so the further I get into the project, the more I feel like I've ventured so far from the original inspiration of this story and it makes me a little bit sad.
I wrote the original version in 2021 and looking back at it, it’s a completely different story than what I’m writing now. it was silly and lighthearted which… is not at all what its current state is like. I’m not entirely upset about it, because this new version has so much more substance and I'm extremely proud of it. I feel like I'm finally saying something and the message overall is really meaningful to me.
last night, I realized how I should title the story. Usually that’s a great feeling. Titling is one of the hardest things after all. But honestly it just left me even more conflicted. For the longest time I thought I knew what the title would be: something very similar to the original title (cryptlandia, the reason why i often refer to it as ‘cryptids wip’, which is extremely ironic bc the story doesn’t even focus on cryptids much anymore). That plan won’t work anymore though, because it no longer fits the tone of the story. Another reminder of the story’s evolution. I’m debating something different now, something more sincere, which has me feeling like I’ve completely lost the heart of the story.
Idk on one hand I’m really happy and proud of how this story’s evolved, but ngl it also hurts to see it shift so far from what i originally wrote.

Barking Harker: Halloween Teaser Week
A brief summary of last week:
Me: Oh, thank God. This last 60+ page mega chapter is done. I’m done with the first chunk of the first draft. My carpal tunnel has carpal tunnel, but now I can finally take a break before hitting the next chapter—
Dracula, bat-smacking himself against the window: In October.
Me: What?
Dracula: It’s October.
Me: Yes? And?
Dracula: You are writing a horror novel with barely any promotion. A horror novel based off my story. Which is currently riding the last of its climactic high into the start of November with Dracula Daily. And Halloween is only a week away.
Me: …
Dracula: :)
Me: No—
Dracula, chucking a wolf through the window: Yes. :)
Yes.
I am putting on my very small and ill-fitting Promotional Cap and officially announcing a small Halloween teaser glimpse of Barking Harker. For those not in the know, Barking Harker is a horror novel I’ve been tinkering with since halfway through the Dracula Daily fun kicked off. What was originally going to be a one-shot bit of public domain fanfiction has recently passed the 200 page mark and I can’t tell if that’s meant to be the first third or the first quarter of this doorstopper. So. A book is happening, apparently.
A brief synopsis:
The climax in Transylvania takes a perilous turn.
The surreal shifts in Jonathan Harker’s person are revealed as only the beginning of a far stranger metamorphosis.
The promise of Mina Harker’s life becomes the crux of an unthinkable bargain.
The dead travel fast, but are far from the only roaming children of the night—and far from the only threat.
The past is exhumed, the present brims with monsters new and old, and the future yawns open like the swinging lid of a coffin as plans further, deeper, and far more nightmarish than Dracula’s English holiday come to light.
Fun times abound.
The teaser chapter I mean to show is the entirety of Chapter 1 for the WIP rough draft, titled, “Preludes and Interludes I: Nights in Asylum.” It involves a few unrecorded scenes that slipped between the journal entries of Budapest and the early stay under Seward’s roof. It will drop October 31st. But there’s more!
In the time leading up to the big day, October 24—30th, I’ll be dishing out character sketches for a few of the central characters in the cast. Some faces you’ll know, but might not recognize. Some faces will be entirely new…though odds are you might find some clues hanging out in certain other supernatural horror classics. All of them will have a role in the story to come.
Some grimmer than others.
Should have watched your words, Mr. Harker.
"I care for nothing now," he answered hotly, "except to wipe out this brute from the face of creation. I would sell my soul to do it!"
Happy Halloween. 👁🎃🧛♂️
As an addendum, I will now be juggling two accounts.
@see-arcane, my general blog where Barking Harker bits will pop up intermittently, and @see-arcane-scribbles (formerly @see-arcane-the-livid), which I’ll be dedicating more exclusively to anything to do with the book or future scribbles. Keeps things tidier that way. Feel free to send questions to either!
