We never really want to give in to feelings when we are well aware they’re not reciprocated. It is dumb, and it makes us shy, and very very insecure. We all fear rejection coming our way, and rejection hurts our pride.  It was a good thing that your feelings were only hatred. They were very much reciprocated.
Though people liked to point it out to you very often, and not so kindly. From hate to love there’s only one step.
You never really believed in that, but you knew that at least in your case, hate didn’t mean the absence of love. It never is, if we are honest.
But really, if you were honest to yourself, you did love Tom. In your own way, but you didn’t like him. Or stand him. Because everything he did annoyed you. And people loved to point out your certain reactions to whatever he did.
Sure, your cheeks got red, and you were flustered, but that was only the visible reactions to the headaches you’d get whenever he was around. Because he would always find his way to make you feel your worse, or prank you or ruin your big chances. Actions get reactions.
You were tired of him and you didn’t trust him, but you knew that if you ever needed help, and there was no one else who could help you, you could call him up. Yes, you loved him, in his own pathetic way, you'd grown up together, after all, and you knew every single detail about the other, which made things worse.
You grew behind his shade, and for a time, it didn’t matter but when he pointed it out, it did get on your nerves. Especially because he had been the one to get you to notice all your flaws.
And even if right now the feelings were mutual, you turned back to  time when they weren’t. The first time he broke your heart, he had you wondering, all night long. An 8 year old already staring into the mirror and wondering what she had done wrong,  wondering if she wasn’t pretty enough, had it been her hair? Was she just plain annoying? or if her voice wasn’t good enough or was it her personality?
Because you saw that he was always the one who everybody loved, so he had to know something about it. If he didn’t love you, or like you in that matter, he had to have a saying on it. Bullshit, he knew nothing.
You grew up, and now you knew it wasn’t your fault he didn’t like you. He was the one missing it.
However, you hated that he was always on the spotlight, and he’d be a big spoiled brat about it. Tom this, Tom that. It infuriated you that everything had to revolve around him, of course Mr. Big Shot was the star, and he had to brag about it. Especially around you. Your mother and big brother said it was only to get your attention.
“Please,” your brother James would say. “All straight men do is to be stupid enough around women so they’ll think, hey that’s incredible?”
Your brother’s theory relied on the fact that men are only stupid because they want women’s attention You know how straight men like to cannon ball at the pool parties? Yes, that’s because of you. You know how men like to shake beers and then down them as fast as they can? Yeah, that’s because of you.
You had a simpler theory, men are stupid by nature. Especially Tom, he was very stupid.
However, thanks to his constant seeking of attention, and the combination of his lack of intelligence, he’d often find himself acting pretty stupid around you. Thing which you absolutely loved. It gave you reasons to make fun of him.
Still, that loathing was deep inside you, and you knew that at any point, he could make you turn around and stab you right on your chest, never backstabbing, Tom wanted to make you well aware he was hurting you. You couldn’t trust him, because he made it very clear that he wasn’t your friend. He was a childhood close acquaintance.
Enemies. That’s it, that was the word. No need to sugar coat it. You had your history, and even though you could say that sometimes, like in that particular moment, you doubted your loathing was reciprocated, you knew he’d come back again with yet another way to prove to you he was a complete asshole.
So when you arrived at the building, and he got out of the car as well, you knew something was up.
“You don’t have to stay,” you reminded him. “Ill take an Uber back home.”
“My mum invited you to lunch, and asked me to personally drive you, don’t read much into it,” Tom snapped.
“Oh, they’re still trying,” you rolled your eyes.
Tom chuckled. “Yeah, they believe we might get along if we keep having lunch together.”
“Why are we having lunch, though? Is there any special occasion?”
“Your interview,” Tom explained.
He followed after you into the building. You sceptically watched him.
“Well, but don’t you have better things to do?” You asked.
“Maybe,” he shrugged. “But I’d rather be here to help you, maybe I’ll even give you a pep talk.”
You clenched your jaw. “This is a big day for me, don’t ruin it.”
“I’m genuinely not trying to,” he chuckled. “I just happen to be very good at annoying you, sorry babe.”
“There’s a cafetería—“
“I know this place, sweetheart, remember I’m actually relevant in the film world.” He pushed you and walked past you.
“You know for being so relevant you’d think you’d be smarter. The cafeteria is upstairs, dickhead.”
He made his way into the elevator with you and watched you.
“How are you feeling?”
“Fine, I guess,” you admitted.
“Hey, um… I know it’s not the time but I really am sorry for last week,” he pushed.
“I don’t want to talk about it now, Tom.”
“I didn’t know that you had-”
“I said I didn’t want to talk about it,” you repeated. You were barely recovering from it. And it hadn’t really been his fault. Except that he had so nicely done something you hadn’t quite loved.
You had just gone through a breakup about a month ago. Timmy. He had turned from being your everything to someone you’d rather forget now. A two-year relationship had just banished in front of you.
You wouldn’t have guessed he’d bring up Timmy over to you at Harry’s and Sam’s birthday dinner. You knew Timmy would be there, he was friends with most people there but having the audacity to walk in with another girl to your best friends party? Seemed sketchy.
You knew Tom didn’t know about the breakup, the last thing he had known was you guys were having problems.
“Oi, y/n look over there, that’s your boy, ain’t he? Why isn’t he here making out with you? Did he get tired of you?” Tom laughed as he walked over to you. “Wait, is he with another girl? Ooof, guess you guys are going to have another fight tonight, right?” He commented as you were just silently looking away. “Y/N, c’mon, that’s probably a friend, chill, hey, Timmo!” And he called out to him.
“Tom, please…”
“No, no, it’s alright, I’m saving you from having a fight, better have him around here! Timmy” He called out again.
And he had turned around and awkwardly waved.
“C’mon over, pretty boy,” Tom continued. “Don’t leave me with y/n.”
“Tom, don’t,” Harry Approached  and warned him as he had noticed what Tom was doing.
Timmy never liked Tom. He said that Tom was unnecessarily rude to you, and he was right. Also, Timmy was one of those people who believed in the whole ‘from hate to love’ bullshit.  He was sure that Tom and you would leave each other hot and bothered and that your hatred was only an excuse to hide away the real feelings towards each other. Timmy was often jealous of your relationship with any of the Hollands. ‘Tom is a big star, you could easily fall for him’.
Tim walked over anyway.
“Uh, hey guys,” he said awkwardly. “Hi, y/n.”
“Oi, what were you doing over there with a girl who’s not y/n?” Tom pushed. “That ain’t right mate,” Tom sounded drunk.
“Tom can you please stop?” Harry asked.
“Happy Birthday, Harry,” Timmy said awkwardly. He looked over at you. “Hi.”
“What happened between you both? Did you finally break up? Wouldn’t blame you Timmy, I don’t really get why you’re dating y/n, for that matter, don’t you get tired of it?” Tom pushed.
“We’re actually on a break right now,” Timmy cleared up, angrily.
Tom’s eyes widened with shock. You didn’t want to explain anything, so you walked away.
The elevator door opened and suddenly a black-haired, blue-eyed and around your age, gorgeous man had walked in. You knew about him, he worked on another show, he was also a writer, a full time one. But you knew that he was probably only there so he could be cast, and you really wondered why they hadn’t yet. Someone as gorgeous as him needed to be on all the screens.
Yes, Joseph Holt. Of course, you knew about him, someone as perfect as him couldn’t go unnoticed. His charming smile and personality was only too much to ask for.
He grinned at you.
“Morning,” Joseph smiled and then proceeded to stare at Tom.
“Morning,” you greeted him.
He took two seconds to look at your outfit. It was neat, nice, professional, and probably better as to how he probably saw you, with bags around your eyes and multiple Starbucks cups on your hands.
“You’re y/n, right? I’ve seen you working at ‘Crooked Manners’,” he pointed out.
“Yes, and you’re Joseph, right?” You grinned. “You work at ‘A little bit of Heaven’ right? With Cassey?”
“Yeah, that’s me,” he grinned and then gave a second glance to Tom. “You can call me Joe, though.”
Tom chuckled.
Joseph, Joe, turned around to see Tom. “I’m sorry, is there anything funny?”
“No, I’m sorry,” Tom grinned.
“So, you’re a writer, too?” Joe asked you.
“I am,” you closed your eyes. “Well, an assistant right now.”
Tom cleared his throat. You glared at him.
“Yes?” Joe asked.
 “I’m just… I’m Tom.”
“Oh, so I did see right.” Joe nodded.
“Yeah, I’m Holland, Tom Holland,” he sassed.
“Calm down, 007,” you rolled your eyes.
“And I happen to be y/n’s boyfriend, very nice to meet you,” Tom grinned as he offered a hand to Joe.
Joe widened his eyes as he shook it. “Oh.”
“What?” You turned to Tom and nudged him. “No, no, he’s not my boyfriend.”
“Ah, alright, sorry, friendship with benefits, I’m sorry darling, I thought we’d agreed on not calling it that anymore,” Tom smirked and placed his hand on your waist. Confused and angry, you pushed him off of you.
“He’s… not, no, no, nothing of that, he’s just… I know him alright?” You tried to clear up, and Joe chuckled, as confused as you were.
“That’s… alright. Do you think I could get your number?” Joe asked as he handed you his phone. “Just so.. You know we could help each other with any writing?”
“Yeah yeah, for sure, and just to clear it out, he’s not my boyfriend or anything, alright?” You cleared out as you typed in your number.
The elevator door opened up again.
“It’s fine, I’ll catch with you later, Y/N,” Joe grinned. “And um, nice meeting you, Tom.”  He said as the elevator closed.
“What the fuck was that?” You turned to Tom and slapped his elbow . “What is wrong with you?”
“Ouch!” He yelled, “I’m helping you get laid,” Tom laughed.
“You… you fucking are what now?”
“I just made you at least 45% more appealing to that guy,” Tom laughed. “Please, he wouldn’t turn your way unless he knows that someone like me slept with you.”
“You’re a dickhead,” you stated.
“You know I’m right, and by your attitude lately I can actually assure you, you haven’t got any in awhile,” he noted. “I’m just trying to help you get someone to...how did he call it? write with.”
“I can handle that myself,” you snapped. “This isn’t any of your business.”
“Hm but it could be,” He smirked.
“Besides I don’t want him thinking I’d got any weird fungus down there from sleeping with you.”
Tom cackled, rolling his eyes. “You wish you had them.”
“So you admit you’ve got them?” You asked with a smirk as the door finally opened.
“I don’t--”
You got to your floor where your friends were waiting for you and were rather surprised when they saw who was behind you.
“Y/N!” Charlie called as he waved at you. He smirked. “Girl”
You stopped abruptly and turned to Tom. “The coffee is over there, I’m sure you can find your way around here, just follow the signs.”
“Ah, don’t you want me around your friends?”
“Now why would I want such a tragedy?”
He scoffed. “Fine, break a leg.”
You smiled. “Thanks, even though it’s not theatre.”
“I’m well aware of that,” he smirked and then turned around off to the cafeteria.
You made your way to your friends, also interns at the studio. Charles, who would often say his name was too absurd and proper for his personality was smirking at you proudly, while Danielle, your clumsy and rather quiet friend was rather interested in seeing Tom.
Charlie smirked and hummed. “I see, I see, strutting around with a little help, hmm classy girl, show off you’ve got pulls.”
You rolled your eyes. “Good morning to you, too.”
“Why didn’t he come and say hello?” Danielle asked with hope.
“He drove me here, and I don’t want you guys to deal with his bullshit,” you explained.
“Hmh,” Charlie stared at Tom. “Hmhm hun, I know you hate him, but homeboy is looking fine this morning.”
You raised a brow and turned around to look at him. “He’s wearing a black t-shirt,” you raised a brow. “What’s the hype about it?”
“Hm, I’m just saying I’d love to take it off,” Charlie sassed.
You rolled your eyes and turned to face your friends. “I really don’t see why you find him attractive, all his looks are erased by his personality.”
“So you do admit he’s got looks,” Charlie smirked. “I’m telling you girl, you secretly got the hots for him, and boy, I ain’t gonna blame you.”
Danielle grinned but then instantly blushed as she saw who was walking behind you.
“I forgot to ask,” Tom said, making you jump. He chuckled.
“What?” You frowned.
“I was going to ask if you wanted me to buy you anything, and I forgot I had brought you this,” Tom offered you a Lion Candy Bar. You raised your brows. “ But if you don’t want anything else… Or maybe your friends….”
“Hi!” Danielle grinned.
Joey grinned. “Hello.”
“We’re fine,” you said before your friends could keep on talking as you looked down at the chocolate “You’re being nice, what’s up?”
He grinned. “I know it’s a big day for you, I ain’t trying to mess it up and I know for a fact those are your favourites.”
“Or maybe you are, trying to freak me out by being nice,” you shrugged. “I know your games, Thomas.”
He chuckled. “Look, I just really want you to do well.”
“Thanks, now I’ll do better if you’re not around, you get me on my nerves” you pushed. “Bye.”
“I’m serious y/n, I know they’ll love you and your color-coded notes,” he chuckled. “Plus you’ve got good orthography.”
“Ah, sure that’s what they're looking for in a writer,” you laughed. “Now, please, Tom, I need to check important stuff.”
“You’re right, it’s not,” Tom grinned. “But you should loosen up a little, unless all writers look like constipated bitches.”
“Ah, original, a constipation insult, I see, you’ve learned no other insult in these last years, good to know I have to speak to you as if you were a thirteen year old boy.”
He clenched his jaw and watched you, as if he had just been challenged. “That's no way of talking to your boyfriend, darling.” Tom had placed his hands on your waist as you took them off, calmed but stiff.
“Leave,” you ordered him again.
He smirked as he stepped in closer. “How about a good luck kiss?”
You crossed your arms, and watched him judging. “Leave, Tom.”
“Such a shame, we don’t kiss that often anymore,” Tom laughed.
“We’ve never kissed,” you rolled your eyes.
“I’ve got proof we have,” he snickered and then proceeded to walk off. “Good luck, babe.”
You rolled your eyes. “I hate him.”
Charlie smirked. “You’ve kissed.”
“That’s absolutely none of your business,” you said. “Now can we please focus on…. I have an interview in an hour.”
“Darling, you’ve got some explaining to do first,” Charlie laughed. “Boyfriend?”
You rolled your eyes as you headed to the small cubicle the three of you shared.
“We bumped into Joe Holt,” you explained. “And Tom said we were a couple in front of him saying that if Joe believed that Tom was dating or sleeping with me it would make me 45% more attractive.”
Danielle grinned. “Joe Holt and Tom Holland?”
“Oh god, Danielle, get a grip,” you rolled your eyes.
“Oh, and did Mr. Holt talk to you?” Charlie wiggled his eyebrows.
“Asked me for my number and everything,” you said proudly. “Which… Oh god. I mean it could mean nothing but…”
“Girl, you’re on fire,” Charlie chuckled. “Though he’s just another white boy.”
You laughed. “He’s still attractive.”
“But are you ready to date?” Danielle asked.
“Oh my god, Dan, he asked her for her number, not to suck his dick,” Charlie implied, making both you and Danielle giggle awkwardly.
“But she knows what I mean!” Danielle laughed. “Just a week ago we had her crying and listening to Taylor Songs.”
“Yeah, and weren’t you seeing Timmy tomorrow?” Asked Charlie condescendingly.
“Look, I’m…I’m ready to move on, you know?” You admitted. “We talked about a break that would last for a month and we’ll see how that goes, alright?”
“I’m not trying to steal your thunder but I myself got a date tonight, so, I’m just gonna pop that in,” Charlie giggled.
“Nice,” you smirked.
“But alright, are you ready for the interview?” Dannielle asked.
Danielle, Charlie and you were kind of the golden trio of the interns, you’ve known them since college. Not a big friendship back then but when the three of you met here, a sort of friendship started.
“It’s not really an interview, you know that right?” Charlie said. “I mean, they’ll probs just tell you you’re already hired, although I heard a word that they’re working on a new series and they might get you there.”
“A new series?” You asked.
He chuckled. “You didn’t hear it from me, but the word says that they’re asking some interns to come up with a story and then...they might have their big breakout.”
“Hm,” you shrugged as you placed the chocolate on the table.
“Aren’t you going to eat that?” Questioned Danielle.
“Tom gave this to me,” you barked as if it was so obvious.
Charlie smirked as he side eyed Danielle. “When is all this going to end?”
“When is what going to end?” You frowned.
“Please,” Charlie grinned as he leaned over. “We both know you don’t hate him.”
“I do.”
“But you care for him,” Danielle pushed.
“Hatred isn’t the absence of love, alright?” You rolled your eyes. “Hatred means according to the dictionaries, intense dislike.”
“So you love him?” Danielle asked with confusion.
“Ugh, yes because they grew up together,” Charlie explained. “Gosh, Dan, do you never listen?”
“Look, I can’t stand him,” you explained. “I just really think he’s very annoying, and I’m right, he is annoying and he can’t stand me either. We’re good with that relationship.”
“Have you kissed though?”
You scofffed. “Look, maybe once when we were teens? And…” You took a deep breath. “It meant nothing, you know? It really does mean nothing, but he likes to point it out every now and then.”
“Why?”
“Look,” you closed your eyes and gulped. “He… he was kind of,” you sighed. “We were at a party”
“Oh, seven minutes in heaven?” Charlie took a sip of his coffee. “Damn.”
“Yes, but it was stupid, alright?” You rolled your eyes. “I was… 17 and I was sad because my crush was there with another girl and I wanted to make him feel jealous” You felt weird only speaking about it. “And I told him.”
“Did you ask him to kiss you?”
“Look, I was very stupid and I kind of used to have a on and off crush on him and he was already an actor” you blushed. “Look, I was very stupid I was kinda drunk, too.”
“You still kissed fucking Spiderman?” Danielle chirped.
“But it’s no big deal,” you sighed. “Now, we hate each other and haven’t kissed since, alright?”
Though, it wasn’t true. Not really. You did think of it as a deal, not a big one, but a deal. Because also, the second statement wasn’t true. Tom and you had kissed each other, three times. Only one had meant something, the first one. The other two you blamed on the heartbrakes and one on alcohol and stupidity, they didn’t mean anything. Besides, after those two, things really didn’t go well. Only the first time you ever kissed was important to you both.
But the first one, you remembered it perfectly. But it wasn’t the time to think of it, right now.
“You know I’ve got a theory,” Charlie grinned.
“Everyone does,” you rolled your eyes. “Now if you don’t mind I need to focus.”
It bothered you how every single person would try and chirp in your relationship with Tom. There was no deep meaning behind it, just two people who enjoyed annoying each other and who hated each other’s company. That was it. Even you could joke about it with Tom, just like the lunch you’d be having later, it probably being the latest attempt your mother and his had to make you guys get along. They’d make you sit down together and often leave you alone, which only ended up insulting or you guys completely ignoring each other. It was annoying.
“I have a theory,” Charlie sang anyway. “That if you guys slept with each other all of this would be gone, all your said hatred,” Charlie grinned.
“That ain’t true, and I’d never sleep with him.”
“I’m sure all of this is from the sexual tension you’ve developed all over the years,” Charlie continued.
“Sexual tension?” You laughed. “He literally called me a constipated bitch, you… you call that sexual tension?”
“Straight men are weird,” Charlie shrugged. “And please, I’ve seen how he acts around you, he’s just like a damn child all smittened with you.”
“Yes, he does check you out from time to time,” Danielle admitted.
“Only to see what he can point out and make a shitty comment from it,” you rolled your eyes. “Look, it’s not gonna happen.”
“I’m just saying that you’d get along if you were both sweating against each other, and grinding and-”
“Gross,” You interrupted him. “The only thing you’ve got right is he’s a child.”
“Besides, I can bet you that if you were to ask him to have sex with you, he’d say yes without thinking about it.”
“Why would I ask him that?” You scolded.
Danielle laughed. “Because you also secretly have a crush on him.”
You watched them with disbelief. “You’ve got to be shitting me.”
“Look, maybe not from you but I can assure you that Tom desires you,” Charlie grinned.
“Oh god, guys this isn’t a Sandra Bullocks movie, just shut up.” You sat down and opened up your computer to try and focus on the interview you’d have.
“Didn’t Timmy say that?” Danielle asked.
“Oh, yes, that he was sure Tom did everything he did to impress you and take you away form him,” he laughed.
“If we’re honest, Timmy thought that of any man, even of you, Charles,” you mocked with a gentle giggle.
“Besides y/n you need a rebound,” Danielle insisted.
“Tom would be a hell of a rebound,” Charlie admitted. “Oof, I bet he’s great at the aftercare.”
“Yes,” Danielle agreed. “And I think that he’s not into weird things, you know?”
“Or like, good weird, you get what I’m saying?”
You watched them annoyed. “Oh my god, guys, you are taking as if that was actually going to happen,” you shook your head.
“Look, go ahead, ask him to have sex with you,” Charlie insisted as you watched him unbothered. “Please it’d take you less than ten minutes to get you to let you fuck him.”
“Oh, and they would like fall in love with each other,” Danielle said.
“What?” Charles laughed. “Girl, no I’m just trynna get her laid.”
“But wouldn’t it be romantic? A whole enemies to lovers story?” Danielle continued.
“Maybe he’d fall in love, not me,” you said. “I could easily make him fall in love with me and I wouldn’t catch a feeling.”
“Oh, will you, now? Wanna bet?” Charlie grinned.
“I’m not having this conversation, I’d rather go back to him,” you admitted as you walked off with your computer back to where Tom was, so peacefully sitting down scrolling on his phone as he was biting on half a sandwich.
He looked up at you, and you were probably blushing. It felt weird walking back to a man whom your friends had just suggested you should sleep with.
“Hi, they’re bothering me, I can’t concentrate and I’m going to go through a breakdown if I don’t- I’m not gonna bother you alright, I just need to calm down before everything.” And you were being honest with him, and you knew he understood.
He was a jerk, but not that big of a jerk.
“Yeah, no, it’s alright, sit down,” he shrugged as he offered you a seat.
Somehow you felt calm, because he noticed you needed that.
You sat down and didn’t even look at him, although you were fighting the urge not to.But your mind was actually thinking of him, not of the past conversation, no but your first kiss together, your first kiss ever. One which wasn’t on camera.
And the time came, and you were at your interview trying your best to listen and answer perfectly, but your mind went back to that first kiss and your mind went back to the conversation you had with your friends.
But it came to the kiss, that kiss. One which you knew you shared a secret of. It had been all you could expect from a first kiss, sweet and clumsy and very quick, a small peck on the lips he’d given you. And although, it had been weird.
You remembered it,  Tom had noticed you were down and not even coming up with comebacks. You were tired, your friend Fabiola, the only one of your friends who remained with virgin lips had given her first kiss, with that kid Aaron with the red backpack.
So you remained to be the only one of your friends without a first kiss. There you were, a pathetic kid who was too busy writing stories and filming videos with younger kids that you had forgotten to have a first kiss.
You were watching as Tom was playing video games and you hadn’t once asked for the controller. It was one of his free days he had from Billy Elliot, and you weren’t sure why he had invited you.
“Okay, what’s up?” Tom asked, pausing the game.
You didn’t even look at him.
“Y/N, why aren’t you playing?” He pushed
You looked down at your pink chipped nails. “Am I ugly?”
“Yes, next question.”
You sighed. “Tom, I’m serious.”
“I am, too, what’s the deal?” He frowned and then started the game again.
“All my friends have given their first kiss,” you bit your lip. “And I haven’t. Is it because I’m ugly?”
“Well, do you have anyone you could kiss?”
“Well, not really.” You frowned.
He shrugged. “Then you’re ugly and alone.”
You frowned. “Have you had your first kiss?”
“I’ve had girlfriends, y/n.”
“See? You’re ugly and you’ve had your first kiss, it must be something else.”
“Your personality is ugly, too,” he pointed out. “Seems like you’re not gonna have a first kiss, ever.”
“Well I must, someday, don’t you think?”
Tom shrugged.
“Would I be that bad of an option for a kiss?” You asked sincerely.
He paused the game, and coughed. “I mean.”
You raised your brows. “What?”
“Not really.”
“Who was your first kiss? Angela?” You asked, knowing he had a crush on her. “Or another girlfriend?”
“I haven’t kissed anyone,” He admitted. “It’s… scary, you know?”
“How so?”
“I don’t know how to do it.” He blushed. “I...I get nervous just thinking about it.”
“Please, how difficult can it be? You just place your lips together,” you pointed out.
Tom frowned. “What do you know? You’ve never kissed anyone.”
“But I’ve seen movies,” you pointed out. “Look, let’s… watch a movie and maybe you can learn.”
Tom wrinkled his nose. “I’m not watching a movie, y/n, I know how it’s supposed to go.”
“Then why haven’t you done it?”
He frowned. “I dunno.”
You both stayed on the couch with your arms crossed. It seemed like you both knew the answer to your problem but neither of you wanted to address it. You stayed quiet, for a long time, on the edges of the couch, avoiding eye contact.
 “Do you think we should-?” Tom asked.
“No.”
“Why not?” Tom frowned.
“Would you?”
“I-No, no.”
“Well,” you gulped. “Or….? Would you kiss me?”
“No…” Tom paused. “Not here on the couch.”
You stayed quiet again.
“I mean,” Tom intruded. “We could go outside.”
“Outside?” You looked at him. “Really?”
“But it would mean nothing, right?” He coughed. “Just so we can say we’ve kissed someone.”
“Yes.”
“Right.”
You both ran to the backyard where you were both sweating nervously. He watched you.
“We can’t tell anyone,” he said.
“No, no, we won’t,” you agreed, nodding quickly.
He took a deep breath watching you.
“Well, get it done already!” You chirped nervously.
He leaned over but giggled and backed away.
You laughed with him. “What?”
“I dunno, what if I ruin it?” Tom asked.
“I wouldn’t know this is my first kiss, too!” You said, nervously. You were getting butterflies in your stomach and you were sure your cheeks were getting red. Tom was made a tomato and he was shaking.
“Okay,” he gulped. “Uh.”
“Wait, but, in movies, the guy… usually holds the girl’s face,” you explained.
He nodded. “Right.”
“And the girl…” You were sure your stomach was going to explode. “Usually has her hand on his neck.”
And before you knew it, you were holding each other.
Tom gulped as he stared at you and you could see each and every freckle on his face.
“Okay, close--close your eyes,” he said as he cupped your face.
You did, and before you could think of it, Tom had placed his lips on yours, and you had pressed yours against his. 5 seconds, that’s how long it had lasted before you both pulled away and pushed each other away.
And you had gotten nervous enough, enough to even get you to run to the bathroom and throw up.
Just like you were about to throw up now.
“So I’m very glad, y/n, you’re very talnted and we’d like to offer a place in here, however, well you might have heard of this, but we’re looking for a fresh new story, we’re talking about giving you a big shot, write a story based on a personal experience, you see the idea of the new series is to make it as human as possible so we’re asking all of you, if we can work on it.”
“Oh, I didn’t know about it,” you lied. “That sounds interesting.”
“Well, it’s anything really, but alright, do you have any ideas to pitch in?” Your boss, Alessandra, asked.
“Right now?”
“Yes, anything. Let’s see that creative side of yours, I’m not telling you to give me the whole story, maybe just a prompt from your life.”
“Hm,” you bit your lip. “I... well, I’ll.... do something about childhood enemies to lovers, maybe.”
“Hm, a classic, happened to you? Did you fall in love with your childhood enemy?”
“I... well,” you cleared your throat. “Not really,” you squeezed your eyes. You were very nervous. “I mean, I’m kind of... trying to make that happen.” You were speaking without even thinking about it.
“Oh, how so?” She raised her brow.
“Well, I was trying to prove to a friend that I could make my enemy fall in love with me and I wouldn’t catch any feelings.”
Alessandra smirked. “I love that, work on it, do it, keep a journal of it, write it, make it entertaining and tell me the results, ooh, I really like that, ”Alessandra grinned as she looked up. She often did that when writing as if she was seeing the picture in her head.  “It’d need to have a catchy name... But sounds promising.”
“Wait, really?”
“Yes, it can involve drama, love, humour, it’s perfect, we’ll see, and it’s the best way to hurt an enemy, so chop chop, go do it, I trust you, and we’ll see you in a month, keep a journal of it, remember, thank you y/n.”
You thanked her and did the exact same thing you’d done after giving your first kiss. You ran to the bathroom and threw up.

Ghost!Levi x Reader
Modern!AU
Warning: Cursing, Mentions of Blood, Slight Angst
Summary: You meet the ghost of your favorite fictional character from your most adored anime AoT
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Y/N you're crazy if you think we're going in there with you!" your childhood friend Farlan screeched pointing to the largely abandoned castle that stood behind you "y-yeah! It's not safe in there!" your other friend Isabel added, clicking your tongue you rolled your eyes turning back to the castle you couldn’t help but smile at it. "Come on guys! It's exactly like the castle from Attack on Titan! Imagine all the cosplay photoshoots we could do there!" you plead as Farlan scowls. "Y/N you can go in by yourself but we're staying out here" he argued as you huffed before an idea sparked in your mind "but guys! It could be fun! You wanted to go on an adventure and here we have one!" you grin gesturing to the stone building.
"Good point big sis.. Yeah I'll join you!" Isabel cheered appearing at your side in an instant, Farlan pinched the bridge of his nose groaning inwardly "fine... I'll follow you Y/N.." he grumbled as you beamed with excitement. "Let's go!" you cheered bounding off towards the castle. Skidding to a stop you look up towards the doors 'it really does look like the old Scout HQ though... What am I thinking? AoT is fictional!' You inwardly scold yourself. "I say we split up, sound like a good idea big sis?" The redhead suggested earning an eager nod from you.
"I am not being separated from you! Isabel I'm following you since we all know what you can do in abandoned places by yourself" Farlan comments following you and Isabel to the main doors, putting all your weight to your side you creaked one of the massive doors open. Sauntering inside you glanced around in awe, looking over your shoulder to the pair walking in behind you-you sent them a reassuring smile "alright.. Time to split up, if you need help just scream Sasageyo" you tittered at the word you chose as Isabel laughed "got it big sis! See you in a while!" and with that, she grabbed Farlan's hand and took off down a corridor.
Smiling at the two you started on your own way which happened to be a set of stairs leading to another floor, taking out your phone you held it in your hand in case you needed pictures of anything or you needed the torch. Quietly whistling you looked around you at the stone corridors that had torch holders on the walls, some cracks had made their way up the walls along with some plants. Wooden doors were scattered around everywhere with faint markings on them.
"I swear this place is just like the Scouts HQ as I imagined it... I should have brought my cosplay.." you mutter quietly noticed a deserted training field outside, opposite the training field was another part of the building, it seemed like the building was in a U shape. A few silent minutes passed of slowly walking through the corridor and you came to a firm stop when you saw a door opened just a little, bright light seeped through the gap which perked your curiosity, humming silently you cruised towards the wooden door, a metal palet was latched onto it covered with dirt. Grumbling from the filth you took out a tissue from your backpack and wiped away the dirt revealing a surprising text on the metal.
'Captain Levi's Office'
Your jaw dropped, without hesitation you swung the door open and nearly tripped going inside the room, a large wooden desk sat across from the door accompanied by a big chair and a window behind it. Bookshelves were scattered across the room as it looked like some other small room was connected to the office due to a door in the corner. "Oh my fucking god... This place... Oh my fucking.." you stampered rushing over to the desk you went behind it and yanked out the drawers that sat shut.
Papers lay neatly in the drawers as you took a page out delicately, careful not to damage it. There was neat black ink writing on the page, at the bottom was a signature you thought you would never see in your life.
~ Levi Ackerman
'This can't be real.. This cannot be real! Probably some other cosplayers or whoever were here before us! Oh my lord..' you mentally scream taking out another page and finding the same signature and writing. Swiftly taking pictures of the pages you put them back in the drawer and slide your phone into your back pocket. Hesitantly pulling out the large chair that sat in at the desk you checked it for spiders or insects, clearing off any cobwebs or dust you sat down resting your arms on the desk in front of you you stared in shock after your discovery.
"This isn't real this isn't real... Levi is a fictional character... Oh my god I'm panicking.. I'm probably overthinking this.." you say out loud gazing around the room, you felt tears prick at the corner of your eyes for some reason... Was it that you're happy that you're currently sitting in Levi's abandoned office or tears from you panicking too much?
A breeze wafted towards you sending shivers down your spine as you looked down to the desk sighing. "If I see any ghosts I'm most likely going to piss myself.." you mutter again, you felt like you were being watched but you didn't know from where. Standing up you made your way to the bookshelves, a green fabric piece was folded up covered in dust and cobwebs that sat there. Gently taking it down you shook off the dust and you swore you nearly fainted at the symbol of the Wings Of Freedom crest on the back. "Shit.. I'm gonna cry, why am I crying!?" you question yourself violently rubbing your eyes and returning to the desk with the cloak. "This is real... How long has this place been around for... Ugh I need to stop crying everytime I find something belonging to Attack on Titan here.." you say. "What the fuck is Attack on Titan?" a thick voice bounces off the walls making you jump, holding the cloak to your chest you looked around frantically trying to find out where the voice came from.
"W-Who's there? Don't try anything funny.. I-If you do I'll- I'll-.." you stuttered a threat "You'll what? Try strangle me with my own cloak? Tch.." the voice says again but from right beside you, darting your eyes to your side you paled at the sight. A man that somehow looked identical to the Levi Ackerman you knew from your favourite anime, except this male was slightly see-through. Screaming at the top of your lungs you nearly fell back in the chair trying to scramble away from whatever that is. "Would you calm down, you're going to shit yourself.. Why are you here?" the man asks stepping closer to you. Hopping out of the chair you scattered to the other side of the office, unfortunately tripping over your own feet sending you down on your stomach with a howl of pain.
"Idiot.. Calm down, I'm not going to hurt you" the man said again, kneeling down next to you. Switching your gaze to the male you flinched under his intense stare. "Again.. why are you here?" he asked watching you stand up cautiously "I-I came with my f-friends, we wanted to go on an a-adventure.... This place looked like the o-old Scout Headquarters so we went in.." you muttered as he clicks his tongue. "Scout Headquarters huh? And how did you know this place belonged to the Scouts? And why in the world were you taking photos of my paperwork?" the man grumbled watching you, nervously scratching the back of your neck you averted your gaze. "Well.. I watch this show about well... Humanity against big human eating creatures called titans... Then they showed the Scouts HQ that looks like this place.. So.. It's called Attack on Titan.. " you genuinely didn't know what to say to this ghost or whatever it was.
"I'm presuming you know all about them big bastards then, even the walls?" the man asked, excitedly nodding you grinned "yep Wall Maria, Wall Rose, and Wall Sina! And the Underground!" you chirped, he seemed impressed with your knowledge as he nodded. "Well you know who I am as well?" he continued as you hesitantly nodded, biting your lower lip you looked over his features. "You're Humanities strongest..." you mutter as he crosses his arms nodding "Levi Ackerman.. But you're fictional! How can this be real!?" you screech as Levi scowls "tch maybe the government doesn't want anyone to know a so-called anime is based off a true event that happened hundreds of years ago" he responded as you gave him a sympathetic look. "I-Is it alright if I call you Levi or-" "yes" Levi cut you off, now noticing he was wearing his uniform minus the jacket you gawked in awe.
"Is it only you here..? Is Hanji or Eren here?" you question hoping everyone would be here, uncrossing his arms Levi trails his stormy grey orbs to his desk "yes.. Everyone is here" he states as you perk up from excitement. "Oh Levi do you want to meet my friends-" you stopped talking after just before you mentioned Isabel and Farlan. Levi rose an eyebrow to you "what? Meet who?" he asked leaning against his desk. "Uhm... Do you want to meet... Farlan and Isabel..?" you suggest lowly as Levi's eyes widen a fraction. "You don't mean.." he looked like he was in pain as you hesitantly nodded, biting his lower lip he agreed.
"Alright one sec.." you say and walk out the door of his office just to let out a very loud 'SASAGEYO' walking back inside you acted like nothing happened as Levi stared at you in concern. "What the actual fuck-" he was cut off when the door slammed open, in came stumbling the familiar red-head and Farlan as they panted, jumping up Isabel ran to you and began inspecting you for any injuries. "Big sis are you alright!?" she panted, nodding you saw Levi stare at her in shock. "Y/N who the hell is that!? We didn't bring a fourth person!" Farlan exclaimed pointing to Levi who snapped his gaze to Farlan in a pained expression. 'They must be reincarnated and not remember Levi.. Oh no my sweet boi!' you thought as Levi stuttered for something to say.
"Guys, believe me on this but this is Levi Ackerman! This place belongs to the Scouts I told you! I told yooouuuuu~!" you point a playful finger to Farlan as he looks in horror to Levi, Isabel was wide-eyed as she cautiously walked to him. "You're familiar..." she muttered as Levi kept quiet, glancing to you he gave you a soft expression. "I'll be back... I- Have to go.. You three should too, what's your name?" Levi asks as I pout at him "my name is Y/N L/N, I'll visit again Levi.." you say watching him disappear into thin air.
// Time Skip \\
You visited the castle for years, sometimes you'd have Farlan and Isabel tagging along but other than that you went alone, you even met everyone else including Hanji who welcomed you with a surprisingly warm hug.
Walking through the cracked and empty corridors you sauntered to the same place you always went, Levi's office. Wearing your Scout cosplay you didn't base it off of any character you just wanted the uniform, the surprising click of your boots echoed off the walls as you went into Levi's office.
"Boo!" Eren whispered in your ear as you entered, jumping you yelped sending him a disappointed look he laughed. Levi's office would be the meeting place where people who wanted to chill with you waited for your return, multiple of your favorites were scattered around the room. Mikasa and Armin sitting on the couch at the far side of the room, sending you gentle smiles as you entered, Hanji and Erwin who were chatting about human-spirit interaction. Levi sat at his desk, his face lighting up ever so slightly at the sight of you surprisingly wearing your cosplay for the first time.
Hanji caught gaze of you and squealed, running over to you she grinned looking up and down to you "you look so cute in the uniform~!" she teased as Erwin chuckled from behind her. "Welcome back Y/N how are you feeling?" the blonde asked as you smiled at him "I'm doing fine thank you Erwin, what about you?" you reply as he smiles "I'm doing good thanks".
You talked with everyone for a while, slowly they all began to disappear to do their own thing leaving you with Levi. He gave you an unsure expression "Y/N you have to be more careful walking up and down those stairs... I have a feeling they'll give out any day now, I don't like the thought of you getting hurt or worse" he muttered as you sighed taking off your jacket. "I'll be fine Levi, I've gone up and down the stairs for years.. I'll be okay" you offer a gentle smile as his cheeks tint with pink. "J-Just be careful a-alright?" he stutters looking away, giggling you nod "alright captain.." you watch him playfully roll his eyes as he fixes a strap on your thigh.
"If only I were still alive.." he mutters quietly to himself, cocking your head to the side you perked a brow "what did you say? I didn't hear you" you say as Levi shakes his head. "Nothing, don't worry about it... It's getting late, you're friends would be starting to worry about you now" Levi states with a hint of sadness. "Alright Levi, I won't be able to visit tomorrow since I'm going to a party though.. I'll see you in a few days?" you stand up from next to him slinging your jacket over your shoulders as he nods. "I'll walk you out, don't want Oluo to fucking scare you like last time" Levi grumbled at the thought, his hand brushing over yours sending a tingling feeling through him.
Walking through the corridor you both arrive at the stairs "be careful.." Levi muttered from behind you, snickering you nod. Halfway down the stairs, you hear a strange creak from right underneath you. Shrugging it off you take another step, the second your boot came in contact with the wood you felt the stairs give out from underneath you. Shrieking you fell as Levi shouted at you in panic.
Landing on your back you felt a searing pain through your stomach, grimacing from it you look down to your stomach, a sharp piece of wood had impaled you. Blood seeped out as you began to panic. Hopping down next to you Levi's eyes widened at the horrifying sight, a streak of crimson liquid dripped from the corner of your mouth as you look to the man who panicked kneeling next to you. "No-no-no! Y/N no! Stay alive! Don't you dare fucking leave me!" Levi pleaded as you tried to swallow down the metallic taste of your own blood in your mouth. "Levi.. It fucking hurts.. Please.. If Isabel or Farlan come here tell them.. Tell them what happened" your vision slowly growing hazey as the ebony-haired man teared up, looming over you cradling your head. "Y/N I won't let you leave... I won't.." he tried seeing your skin pale slowly. "I won't lose you because I love you dammit!" he shouted as a sticky tear rolled down from your eye, raising a weak hand to him you smile gently at him. "I love you too Levi..". Watching you fight against the overwhelming urge to shut your eyes for a few more agonizing seconds. Witnessing all life drain from your gorgeous and pale face he stared down at you as tears welled in his eyes.
"I won't lose you..." Levi muttered lowering his slightly transparent face to your own lifeless one, gently placing his lips to your ice cold ones Levi felt a tear roll down his cheek onto your face, pulling away after giving your lips a delicate kiss he wished for it to be like the fairytales, where he could save you from an every lasting sleep with a true love's kiss. Silence filled the stairway except for his desperate sobs and cries began again.
"Levi..? Levi stop crying.." your voice came from behind the whimpering man, looking over his shoulder his gunmetal glossy eyes widened at the sight of you. "Y/N.." he muttered slowly standing up looking at you like you were an angel "yes Levi it's me, don't think I would have forgotten about you already hm?" you tease as he runs to you, engulfing you in his now warm embrace you could actually feel Levi as if he were a person. Smiling you wrapped your arms around him as he sobbed into the crook of your neck. "It's alright Levi, I'm here.. And I'm staying.. I love you.." you say breaking away from the hug mere inches away from his face.
"Fuck I love you too L/N.." he mutters diving in for a desperate kiss that took you by surprise, returning it you wrapped your arms around his neck and entangled your hands in his raven hair. Parting for air Levi presses his forehead against your own as his raven locks tickle you slightly "I've been waiting to kiss you for so long.." he mumbles holding you against him.
"Me too Levi... Me too.."
Tale As Old As Time
Whoo y'all this fic took a lot out of me, but it is definitely one of my favorites that I've ever written.
Disclaimer: I do not own Maggie Steifvaters characters nor do I own any of the beauty and the beast plot. I've used lyrics from the songs, lines from the script, and a description for the beast, but they are not mine, they are the beauty and the beast production teams.
Summary: beauty and the beast au where Adam is belle, Ronan is the beast, blue is Maurice, and tad is gaston. Pynch week day 2: musical au Adam/Belle POV
Word count: 5507
Adam Parrish and Blue Sargent lived together in a small village in the town of Henrietta, Virginia. The two are the closest thing to family that they have. Blue had family, but left to pursue her own life. They worked together perfectly because they had a mutual interest in making things. Blue made clothes while Adam made inventions. The provincial village disliked the two of them and called them funny. Adam guessed they were. The village people and Adam and Blue had different views on living in general. They didn't like how Blue spoke her mind and wasn't as clean cut as the rest of the women. Blue wasn't a slave to her husband and she loved being single. Adam on the other hand needed to be more demanding in the people's eye. He has to be with Blue in a romantic relationship because living together without any relationship was sinful. Adam and Blue liked their situation because it suited them. Adam would never complain about the hateful town. It was heaven compared to his old life. The village people couldn't see that. They were uptight and rigid and their opinions couldn't be swayed, but the rent was cheap.
Adam started another long day by going into the crowded marketplace for the morning chores, but Adam had an early morning and Blue was working on a design for a fashion fair. The marketplace wasn't as bad this morning as it usually was. He could deal with the whispers and gossip that floods the streets as long as he could get his hands on his favorite book, Alice in Wonderland. Something about the book gives him the sense of childhood he had ruined for him.
Adam returned back to the cottage in about two hours with clean clothes, food for two days, and his favorite book.
He called out, “Blue, I'm home!”
He heard a returning, “I'm in the workshop. I need your help.” and ran to the room.
The workshop was the biggest and most important room in the house besides the room that Blue and Adam share for a bedroom. It's as colorful on Blues side as it is gray and monochrome on Adams side. It's full of the most useful invention and stylish clothing; it's also filled with impractical shit and hideous choices of colors. Blue and Adam worked side by side in this space creating the most marvelous goods. They would trade comments, test products, and listen to music through one of Adam's inventions as they worked.
Adam moved over to Blue’s colorful work table to see what she was working on. Blue was using one of Adams most effective inventions. It was a machine that did the sewing for Blue, so all she had to do was put fabric in and she could manipulate it to her desire.
“This ducking machine stopped working.” She barked.
Adam sorted and put the white thread in the right place and turned the wheel slightly. The foot moved briskly up and down placing the stitches in the right place.
She mumbled, “thank you,” and got back to work.
The clothing piece was turning out stunning; the colors were meshing together perfectly and made the piece tell a story.
Adam was brought out of his reverie by a knock on the front door. He jumped back and went to see who would interacts with ‘the crazies.’ At the door was Tad Carruthers, the town's most handsome bachelor, who had his eyes on Adam since Adam came into this village. Adam rolled his eyes secretly, but he let Tad in. Adam stood in the doorway, so Tad couldn't walk into the cottage.
He mustered the biggest, most fake smile and said, “Tad, what do I owe this pleasure?”
“Isn't it though.” Tad boasted. “Such a pleasure.”
Adam held back the scowl making its way onto his face and instead insisted, “It's always nice to have some conversation, but if it's not important, I have to get back to my inventions-”
“What are your thoughts on marriage?” Tad blurted.
Adam knew where this was going, but his eyes still bulged, “Marriage?”
“Yes, a handsome guy like yourself must have had thoughts about it. You are always thinking.”
“I can't say I've thought too much. All I have to say about it is that it will be at the right time and with the right person.”
“You're young, I'm young. What's a more perfect time?”
“Is this your way of asking me to marry you?”
So you are as dense as the village people say you are. Yes, Adam, I'm asking you to marry me.”
“Tad, I..I just don't deserve you.”
“The only other person that deserves me is me. You're a close second.”
“I'm sorry, I just can't.” Adam said, pushing Tad out the door.
When Adam told Blue this, she cried laughing.
“Could you imagine? He asked me to marry him. Me! The husband of that boorish, brainless…”
“Mister Carruthers!” Adam picked up a piece of some fabric laying around and draped it over his head. “Can't you just see it?!”
“Mister Carruthers!” He picked up a piece of scrap metal and pretend-shot it like a bow, “His other half!”
“No, Blue! Not me ! I guarantee it! I want much more than this bigoted life!”
He sighed, “I just want a different life than the village people, including Tad have planned.”
Blue exhaled and nodded, “Once I go to this fair, I'll be picked up by a fashion company and we can finally move to a better place with no snobs or fucking Tads. We can just..be.”
@    @   @
Blue left the next morning with her designs and a cart made of entirely Adams creation. It had everything Blue needed.
“It's just a few days,” Blue said as they hugged. “I'll be back before you know it.”
That was five days ago. Needless to say, Adam was worried. Sometimes Blue would stay a couple extra days if she liked the town or city, but they had an agreement to not stay five or more days. Adam decided to get out of the house and distract his mind from his anxious thoughts.
In the distance, he heard a horse whinnying. His eyes caught Gwenllian, Blue and Adams horse. Blue took Gwen to her fair and had Gwen pull the cart. Gwen wasn't connected to the cart or the harness appeared to be broken. She was waking up the entire village with how loud she was.
“Woah, girl calm down.” Adam tried to comfort, “Is Blue alright?”
At the sound of Blues name, Gwen cried out. Fear crept upon Adam.
Quickly, he said, “Alright, take me to her.”
He mounted Gwen and she took off galloping. She brought him last the village walls and into the deep forests that surround the town. She ran Blue normal path out of the woods until she turned a smaller, unknown path which took them deeper into the woods. Adam swore he could hear wolves howling in the distance. Through the woods, was a clearing. A huge, gray building was peering through the leaves. As they approached the building, Adam saw the turrets and grand steps. Not a regular building. Around the clearing all the trees and shrubbery was brittle and dry. Any architect would gape at the angles and smooth edges; Adam could draw it everyday and still find some new part of the exterior. Adams has dropped as Gwen continued to the castle.
“Wait here.” Adam told Gwen as he walked up to the unnerving castle steps.
He walked through the large door and called out, “Blue!”
He heard whispering around the main floor. Then, he heard coughing coming from a wing of the castle.
“Blue!” He screamed as he grabbed a neat candelabra and raced to the noise.
When he finally saw Blue, he saw the jail cell and threw himself down to meet her face.
She looked at him with a confused look on her face, “Adam?”
“Blue, I'm here. I'll get you out.”
“No, Adam. You have to get out of here and go home; forget about me. Quick, before he sees you!”
“Who sees me?”
A gruff voice called out, “What are you doing here?!”
A growl came from Adam's front left where he suspected the thing was lurking.”
“Let my friend go!” Adam demanded.
“Then who would pay her crimes?” The creature growled, “unless you would want to take her place.”
Silence came as Adam thought. “Come into the light.” He instructed.
Thee thing scoffed, but did as it was told. When the creature was illuminated, Adam saw the most hideous mix of a lion, buffalo, gorilla, boar, wolf, and beat. Adam flinched back, closing his eyes and reopening.
Adam mustered up his courage and clearly said. “Yes.”
Beside him, Blue cried, “Adam, no!”
“It is done.” The beast told, as he threw Adam in the cell and grabbed Blue.
“Don't hurt her!” He exclaimed, but it was no use.
He looked around at the cell walls and bars. This is where he would live forever. In his mind, Adam knew he should be rethinking his decisions, but he couldn't find one regret. Adam just hoped that there was a least a tiny bit of humanity in the talking creature that he would give Adam food. Unfortunately, it was fruitless to hope. These four walls were Adams future.
@   @   @
Adam woke up to sounds of creaky doors. This wasn't a dream. Adam thought to himself. He followed the sounds he heard and saw an open door, but no human to open it.
“Down here!”
Adam looked down to see the candelabra he picked up last night and a clock. He jumped back and screamed. He couldn't believe what he was seeing.
“What the fuck?” He muttered.
“Name’s Henry, this is Noah. We're here to show you to your room.”
“Ronan's not gonna like this.”
“How is this possible?”
“A heartbroken warlock.”
“We can't tell you more.”
“My room?”
“Did you really think we weren't going to give you a room?”
“No?”
“Ronan might not like it, but we’ll just sick Gansey on him.”
Henry and Noah showed him to the east wing of the castle. They told him it was Adam’s bedroom. His bedroom was a beautiful room that could fit five of Blue and Adams workshops. The decor was simple, a desk, wardrobe, and huge bed. It was a room fit for a duke.
“While you're here.” Noah spoke. “Know that some objects are cursed people, the wardrobe including.” And with that they left.
Curious to what Noah was saying, Adam sauntered over to the wardrobe. It was fancy and delicate plastered with the mint green theme of the room. Hesitantly, Adam knocked on its wooden doors. It sprung to life. One half seemed to shine like a sunshine. The other side stayed prim and proper.
A teenage boys voice filtered through one of the doors, “A human? Finally, it's been getting lonely.”
A silky smooth voice like the beasts carried through the other half, “Really? I'm having trouble believing that you're lonely when we share a wardrobe and have for gen years.”
“Shut up, Declan.”
“Matthew where are you're manners?”
“Up my wooden ass.”
“Matthew!”
“It's so nice to see something that has actual skin.”
Adam cleared his throat, “Well, that Beast is holding me prisoner forever, so you'll see me a lot.”
“I swear to g-d when I'm human again. I'll be the first to punch him.”
“Declan! Get in line.”
Adam cleared his throat again, “I have to ask, why are y'all cursed?”
“We can't tell you. Only Ronan can.”
“I'm Declan, the oldest brother and heir to the throne. My other half is Matthew, the youngest child and literal sun. Ronan, as you call the Beast, is the middle child.”
“Trust me, Ronan is just easily angered. He’all calm down.”
As in cue, loud banging shook Adams room. The beasts loud voice followed, “Get the fuck downstairs for dinner.”
Adam called out a response, “I'm not hungry.”
A moment of silence, then a sign, “will you come down for dinner?”
“No”
“I...would...love if you could...come down for dinner...please.”
“No, thank you.”
“Fine, then go hungry for all I care. If he doesn't eat with me, he doesn't eat at all.”
@   @  @
Moments later silent tears still ran down Adams face. Part of him wished to run after the beast and beg for forgiveness and maybe that way, the beast might take mercy and let her go. He knew he couldn't think about life back home with Blue, but his mind wandered. How was Blue? Was she thinking of him? Did she miss him as much as he miss her? He also thought to what Blue would do in his situation. The answer was quite clear. He had to find something good in this tragic place even if his home, his heart was too far away. He would also have to build walls around himself. He could do this for Blue as long as she was home and free.
A knock at his door startled him. In strolled a teapot and teacup on a cart.
The teapot spoke with a politicians voice, “Would you like a cup of tea?”
Adam smiled, “That would be lovely.”
The teapot poured itself into the teacup. Adam lifted the teacup to his face and took a sip. The tea warmed all the way to his heart and chest. On its way down, Adam heard an inhumane noise erupt out of the teacup. He looked closely and saw a face adorned on the teacup.
“That was such a brace thing you did for your friend.” The teapot admitted. “We all think so.”
“I like you! I'm Opal!” The teacup screeched.
The teapot and Adam laughed. “I'm Gansey.”
“And I'm Adam.”
“Say Adam how would you like some dinner?”
“But what about ‘if he doesn't eat with me, she doesn't eat at all.’”
Ganseys look said it all. The three headed downstairs awaiting the dinner.
@.  @.  @.
Adam walked down the grand stairs with Gansey and Opal by his side. They led him into a ginormous dining room where the chair pulled out and tucked Adam in by itself. On the table was Henry and Noah.
Henry spoke, “Ah Adam! What an honor it is for you to join us this evening. Now watch as the dining room proudly presents your dinner! Please dig in. Be our guest!”
Dinner was a long affair. Music filtered out of the piano in the corner and Henry and Noah did a dance routine that was wonderfully choreographed. Every so often, Noah would remind them to quiet down, so Rona didn't hear. The occupants made an amazing meal with a mysterious gray stuff that melted in Adams mouth. The food made Adam sleepy and full. Adam mentioned to Gansey that he wanted a tour of the castle before bed. Noah called off dinner immediately and went to join the group for the tour. Henry put on his best tour guide voice and showed Adam the library and lower parts of the castle.
When the reached a certain room, Gansey took over and asked, “Say Adam, what do you know about Welsh Kings?”
@.  @.  @.
At some point during the tour, the objects made intense eye contact, but did not mention the huge staircase leading up to the wing. Adam asked about the bathrooms and when he saw the objects turn, he ran.
The wing was dark gloomy. It was covered in cobwebs, ripped clothing, and claw marks. There were pictures along the walls, but only one Adam could make out what the picture depicted. It was a man and women with three children all in royal outfits and huge smiles. The man and two oldest children had black slicked back hair and features that could cut glass. The women and youngest child had unruly, but flowing blonde curls and soft faces. The whole family shared striking, clear blue eyes that matched the beasts eyes. Over the middle childs face were long, deep, slash marks.
Adam moved to the center of the room where the moonlight hit a pedestal that held a mirror and glass case. In the mirror, Adam saw his face clear as day. He saw something move, but nothing was there. In the glass case was a raven with the feathers falling off. At the bottom were several of the black feathers. He saw that the raven did not have many feathers left.
The Beast appeared suddenly and screamed at Adam, “WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?! DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT YOU COULD OF DONE?! YOU COULD OF DAMNED US ALL!! LEAVE, GET OUT!!”
The beast lunged at Adam, then observed the glass case. Adam screamed and ran. He high failed out of the west wing and bolted down the stairs to the door ignoring the screams from Gansey, Henry, and Noah.
He ran out of the haunted castle and rode Gwen into the thick woods. He was surrounded by trees and the pitch blackness of night. He didn't get very far when he stopped and heard the howling of the wolves. Their growls came from every direction and he knew he was screwed. He grabbed a stick as a weapon just as the first wolf attacked. He fought them as best he could, but he was outnumbered. He heard a deeper, more threatening growl and his first thought was shit more of them, but Adam was wrong. It was not more wolves, for it was the Beast coming to Adams rescue. There was the Beast, there was Ronan coming to protect Adam. Adam tried to help, but Ronan's growl at him told him to stay away. He took on several at once, throwing them away as if they were nothing. He finished 15 with ease, but the next wolf got a cheap shot at Ronan. He yelled out before finishing the rest of the wolves. Adam and him stared at each other over the piles of unconscious wolves. Adam was about to say something before Ronan's eyes became half lidded and he collapsed. Adam glanced at Gwen, then back at Ronan. He looked so vulnerable laying there in the cold snow. His wound was bleeding and he would die if Adam left him without help.
He crouched by Ronan's side and whispered, “I need your help. I need you to stand.”
Ronan shakingly obeyed and together they got Ronan on Gwen's back.
Together they would make it back to the castle.
@. @. @.
“Ow!”
“Stop fucking moving!”
“You're hurting me!”
“Well, I'm sorry, tough guy, but suck it up. And stop moving!”
Ronan pouts but hands his arm back to Adam. Adam looks at him, but applies water to his cuts anyways.
Ronan hisses and snatches his arm away, “This never would've happened if you hadn't run away.”
“I never would have run away if you hadn't of frightened me.” Adam said back.
“Well, you shouldn't have been in the west wing.”
“Well, you should learn to control your temper.”
Ronan humpfed  and turned over, showing Adam has wounded back. Adam got more water to clean them, but decided against it. He rings out the water and stands.
“I think we should all get some rest. See you tomorrow.”
Adam is almost out the door before he hears Ronan calling him.
“Yeah?”
“Thank you.”
Adam smiles, nods, and walks back to his room.
@. @. @.
Days turned to months and Adam was still a prisoner at the castle. The days at the castle weren't as bad as to be expected. Ever since the wolf attack, Ronan hadn't been as hostile towards Adam. He could keep a conversation with Adam and they spent most meals together. Ronan was acting slightly more human like everyday. He would sit on chairs like a person and he and Adam made a compromise to sip from the bowl instead of attacking it or eating with a spoon. Adam would sometimes bring books from the library and read them during dinner.
Adam was delighted when he found Alice in Wonderland in the shelves. He brought it to the table and when Gansey came over to talk to Ronan, he pulled it out. He started reading from the beginning.
Ronan saw what Adam was reading and dropped his cup on the ground. Gansey ran to get someone to clean up the spill.
Adam asked, “Have you read this book before?”
“Alice was beginning to get very tired from sitting by the bank with her sister, and having nothing to do: once or twice she peeped into the book her sister was reading, but it had no pictures or conversations on it…” Ronan recited.
Adams mouth gaped open. “You know it by heart?”
Ronan nodded, “It was my father's favorite. I used to go into your room and read it to Matthew and Declan because they couldn't read it anymore.”
And that was it.
One night, Adam came downstairs in some garments Matthew and Declan forced him in to find Ronan waiting at the bottom of the steps talking to Henry, Noah, and Gansey, but stopped at Adams arrival.
Henry whispered something to Ronan which he replied, “it's red?”
Henry and Noah groaned and Henry whispered something else in his ear. Ronan's eyes widened before nodding.
Ronan stepped closer to Adam, “Parrish you look...um...good. Nice red suit.”
Adam laughed, “Thank you, Lynch.”
The two lad shared more personal details together such as last names, but why the castle was cursed, Adam did not know.
Ronan cleared his throat, “Come on, Parrish, there's something I wanted to show you.”
They walked for fifteen minutes down an area of the castle Adam hadn't seen before which was surprising because exploring the castle had been Adam's new found hobby. The hallways looked like the rest of the hallways did, gray and slightly creepy. They turned into a room and Adam let out a gasp. It was an engineering workshop that put Adam and Blue workshop to shame. In the far corner, were engineering books and on the other wall were so many tools that Adam hadn't even heard of some of them.
“My father used to hire inventors to make sure the castle had the latest technology. No one ever uses it anymore, so it's yours.” Ronan broke the silence.
“Mine?” Ronan nodded, “you rarely talk about your parents. Are they some object I've never met before?”
Ronan's face dropped. “No...they died before the curse happened.”
Adam pulled out some of the chairs from the workshops tables, “Im so sorry. I never asked you, how did the curse happen?”
Ronan sat down and his shoulders dropped, “it was my fault. After my parents died, I was depressed. I shaved my hair, obtained some new scars on my wrists, fought with Declan. I was a mess. The only people who could me from not ending my life were Gansey, Matthew, Noah, and Henry, but I started talking to a commoner from another kingdom. His name was Joseph Kavinsky. We would meet up street race, drink, and would sometimes fuck. I thought it was no strings attached, but he didn't. He-he fell in love with me and I told him I didn't love him and that he was just a coping mechanism. I never knew he was a warlock. He told me he would place a curse on my castle and all who lived inside it, so I would be as heartbroken as I made him. If I find who loves me and actually loves me, then the curse would be broken. If I don't find someone who by the time the last feather falls from the raven, then everyone I love turns to antiques and I remain a beast.”
Adam was left breathless, “So that's why you got so mad at me when I was in the west wing. Ronan...I'm so sorry.”
Ronan clicked his tongue. “Nothing for you to be sorry over. It's not your fault.”
“It's not your fault either.”
“Parrish.”
“I mean unrequited love sucks, but that's no reason to curse an entire castle.”
Ronan smiled a real and genuine smile unlike his usually smirks that Adam had gotten used to. A moment passed between them where they just stared at each other smiling.
“Wanna make use of the ballroom tonight?” Ronan asked.
“Like dancing?” Adam questioned.
“You can say no.”
Adam thought for a moment. “Id like that.”
@. @. @.
The castle was filled with a sweet presence that came with a ballroom dance. Everyone was excited for the twos dance.
Matthew and Declan dressed Adam in the most amazing silk suit. Blue would have appreciated the yellow color. He felt confident in the form-fitting garment.
He felt flutters when he walked down the steps leading to the first floor. His breath stopped as he saw Ronan on the opposite set of stairs. Ronan's outfit fit him snug and he looked lost until his eyes met Adams. They walked down the steps maintaining eye contact. Ronan outstretched his arm and met Adams.
Music led them to the royal bedroom where Gansey, Noah, and Henry were waiting for them.
Ronan drew Adam into his arms as Gansey started singing. His voice was a little shaky from misuse, but accompanied the dance perfectly.
Ronan certainly knew how to dance from his royal days, but was surprised to learn Adam knew how to dance as well. They moved together in perfect rhythm.
There were stepped on feet and apologetic glances, but overall the night went perfect. The two moved to the balcony to get some air as Henry and his lover Jiang took to the floor and danced the night away.
Ronan let out a breath, “I haven't danced like that in years.”
Adam laughed. “Me either. When Blue and I first moved in together, she thought it was outrageous that I never learned to dance, so she taught me.”
“Do you miss her, Blue?” Ronan asked.
“More than anything. She was my first friend before all this happened.”
Ronan was silent for a moment before continuing, “There is a way to see her.”
“There is?”
“Yeah.” Ronan pulled out the plain mirror and handed it to Adam.
“Show me Blue.”
The mirrors glass shimmered away to show Blue being shoved into a black carriage, the villagers surrounding her with fire, Tad at front.
“Oh my g-d!” Adam shrieked. “Blue in trouble.”
Ronan took a deep breath in, “then you should go to her.”
“I should?”
“She needs help.”
“But what about…”
“You're not a prisoner here, Adam. You haven't been in a long time.”
“But…”
“But nothing. Go.”
Adam reached to give the mirror back. “No. Take it with you so you'll always have a way to look back and remember me.”
Tears welled up in Adams eyes, “I could never forget you.” He leaned forward and kissed Ronan on the cheek, “I'm coming Blue, don't worry.”
@. @. @.
Adam heard Tads booming voice as soon as Adam entered the village. He seemed to be ruling the people up with his harsh words and thunderous voice. The people were following him blindly.
“Tad!” Adam screamed.
Tad let out a giddy smile at Adam arrival. It quickly turned mischievous in a split second, “Adam! It's so good to see you. I'm so sorry to hear about Blue.”
Adam furrowed his brows, “what about Blue?”
Tad put on a mask of remorse. “Blue went off the rails. You weren't here, so I took care of it. She'll be staying in a nice room at Monsieur Blacks asylum.”
“Blue isn't crazy; she's one of the most sane person I know.” Adam scoffed.
Tad whimpered in pity for Adam; the crowd followed. “But she is. She kept raving on and on about a beast.”
“But there is a beast.”
Tad sighed, “not you too.”
“And I can prove it.” Adam held up the mirror. “Show me the beast.”
Ronan's image flickered on the glass. When Adam showed Ronan, the village people gasped in fear.
“Is he dangerous?” One village person shrieked.
Adam replied almost immediately, “No he's very sensitive and gentle once you get to know him.”
Tad looked scandalized. “If I didn't know better, I'd say you have feelings for him.”
“You don't know me well enough to say that truthfully.” Adam retorted.
Tad sneered, “I may not, but I know monsters like that.” He turned to the crowd. “He’ll make off with your children, he’ll come after them in the night. I say we kill the beast.”
The crowd screamed approval while Adam screamed no.
Tad raised his hands up. “It's time to follow me.”
The village people grabbed torches and anything they could use as weapons. Some said prayers before they all took off towards the dark castle.
As soon as the last village was out of sight, Adam ran towards Blue who they forgotten about in the chaos. He threw his arms around her.
“Blue, I have to go warn Ronan.”
“Not without me you won't.”
@. @. @.
They arrived in the middle of the battle, objects vs people. Blue told him that she was going to help the castle and that he should go find the beast. He ran to the west wing as fast as he could in his yellow suit, dodging thrown plates, shovels, and miscellaneous objects. Adams heart was vibrating. What if he was too late?
He made it in time to see Tad leaning over Ronan, dagger in hand. Whatever he was saying to Ronan seemed to be the most painful thing Ronan ever heard. He looked like he was surrendering to Tads knife.
“Ronan!” Adam yelled.
Ronan opened his eyes. “Adam?”
Tad smiled murderously. “Adam! Just in time to see your lovely beast die.”
Ronan and Adam reached for each other as Tad plunged his knife into Ronan's chest.
“No!” Adam sobbed.
Tad took a step to the edge of the balcony to shadow over Ronan. Adam ran, knees buckling, and pulled Ronan's head into his lap.
Tad laughed, throwing his head back, “this is your fault Adam. If you had just married me, your precious Ronan would still be alive. Isn't it just a shame when things don't go exactly as planned?”
Tad laughed and laughed. He was laughing so much he didn't realize his feet went over the edge. Tad roared as he fell his death.
The two, finally left in privacy, stared at each other, tears running down Adams face. Ronan moved his paw to brush away the tears.
“You came back.” Ronan breathed.
“I wished I never left you.” Adam confessed.
“Maybe it's better this way.”
“Stop talking. Conserve your energy.”
“At least I got to see you one last time. Adam I…”
“Ronan? Ronan?”
Adam sobbed into Ronan matted fur.
“Ronan! Don't leave me! You're my home! I...I Love you!”
The castle grew eerily silent. Adam didn't see the last feather fall from the raven from his place in Ronan's chest.
He did see when a bright light washed over Ronan's body. It grew so bright that Adam had to look away. When he opened his eyes, he was met with a man dressed in a loose white dress shirt back tattoos and muscles visible. The man stared at his arms and sobbed with relief. He turned around and Adam could see his entire body. Adam lost his breath. He was by far the most gorgeous man Adam had ever seen, but where had he come from and where was Ronan?
He stepped closer to Adam and Adams stomach dropped. “Adam, look into my eyes.”
Adam did and was met with the most clear water blue. They were so bright, the punched a hole right through Adams guy just like…
“Ronan?” Adam gasped.
Ronan nodded and smiled so bright Adam had to smile back. Adam placed his hands on Ronan's snatched cheeks and looked into his eyes in awe. Tears sprang into his eyes for the third time that night, but this time Ronan cried with him.
Ronan moved closer to Adam, “May I?”
Adam laughed, but nodded.
They came at each other fast until their lips touched each other's. The kiss was chaste and gentle as if they were afraid to break one another. Adam could feel Ronan's tears mixing with his own. When they separated, their foreheads stayed glued shut and they nuzzled noses. They laughed again and hugged almost as a promise to never let go.
@. @. @.
They eventually made it downstairs to be greeted by Blue and villagers now remembering their beloved prince. Ronan and Adam were ambushed by human Gansey, Henry, Noah, and Jiang who pulled them into tight hugs. Opal announced her presence by letting out a inhumane noise and keeping into Ronan's arms. She was followed by Matthew who tackled Ronan's middle and Declan who ruffled Ronan's nonexistent hair. Adam pretended not to notice the looks Gansey and Blue were exchanging before going in to kiss his beautiful, human boyfriend.
I Know I’m Wrong, But I Can’t Help Believing
Aizawa Shouta/Present Mic (Yamada Hizashi) ; TRAITOR AU ; Traitor!Present Mic
Link: Read it on AO3
Word count: 3630
Summary:
 “Yamada Hizashi.” “Huh?” “That will be your name for the entirety of this operation. You best get accustomed to it.”
He was born a villain. He was given both a mission and a new identity. This fic follows the life of “Yamada Hizashi” leading up to his exposure as the traitor of UA.
30 years ago.
He doesn’t remember the start of it. Not that it really mattered. His parents had been villains, good ones too.
25 years ago.
He grew up knowing villains the way other kids knew heros. Indoctrination is a funny thing, always a double-edged sword. Of course, villains did tend to be more disagreeable people than heros, and internal conflicts were common-- but his parents didn’t neglect him. They protected him well. He lived a good childhood, and grew into a bubbly personality with an enthusiasm that seemed untameable.
22 years ago.
His parents died. He had no extended family, and was instead taken in by the villain organization that his parents had belonged to for years. He learned toughness. He learned what it meant to survive.
15 years ago. Mission start.
“Yamada Hizashi.” “Huh?” “That will be your name for the entirety of this operation. You best get accustomed to it.” “Ah… Yes sir…” He stood in an office, facing opposite of the voice that addressed him from behind computer screen static. There was a slight echo in the tall, cold, room, and each sentence was echoed faintly back to him, as if the building itself was some kind of comic book villain’s assistant, nodding and grinning feverishly and repeating every word out its boss’s mouth. Well. Every place has its charm. Just a week prior he’d been alerted of the new mission he would be undertaking, and in the days since he hadn’t gone ten minutes without hearing a new comment on the topic. “Damn lucky kid. You realize how easy you’re gettin’ off with this? While we’re out bustin’ our asses--” “Shut up, shithead. You wouldn’t be able to last a day on undercover work. Constantly gettin’ asked questions you don’t know the answer to, comin’ up with lies on the spot. This kid here, he’s clever. He’s savin’ our asses doin’ this.” “Why’s someone this young being sent on a mission as dangerous as this, though…? How can we trust that he won’t crack under the pressure? He’s not very experienced, you know.” “No, no, it’s because he’s this young that he’s doing this. Haven’t you heard? They’re gonna enroll him in UA. We’re growing an artificial hero from the ground up. What is it those whackjob teachers call them… Eggs? We’re hatching a hero egg. It’s genius, really.” Although the constant talk was annoying, he couldn’t deny that it was all perfectly true. He’d never had a say in the matter from the start. He was the only one under the age of sixteen in the organization, and transferring someone in as a second-year already put them in the position of an outlier, so that was key. His quirk was combat-oriented and he was talented in controlling it-- again, key, because admitting someone upon basis of recommendation would have increased the complexity of the mission tenfold. Now, he received one final comment. “Today you have been made a vital piece of a master plan. You have been entrusted with a great deal of responsibility, but I have faith that you will deliver. Do not prove me wrong.” “Yes, sir.” He bowed his head and turned to exit the room, but was stopped when the voice sounded again. “What is your name, again?” He paused and took a deep breath. “Yamada… Yamada Hizashi.”
14 years ago. First goal: Admittance to UA. Complete.
He poked the mass of dark hair that rested on the desk beside him with the eraser end of his pencil. “Psst.” Five seconds of silence. “Psst.” Five more. “Psssssttt--” “What in God’s name do you want?” A single bloodshot eye glared at him from behind thick locks. “No no, it’s not God’s name that I want, I was wondering what yours is.” He flashed a beaming smile to rival that of a toothpaste model. The glare intensified before returning its focus back to the desk, and he almost thought he wouldn’t receive an answer when a muted grumble reached his ears. “Aizawa Shouta. I’m going back to sleep now.” “Wahh, cool name!! I’m Yamada Hizashi!!"
13 years ago. Second goal: Fit in. Be amiable with members of your class. Complete.
“THE VOICE HERO! PRESENT MIC!!!” He didn’t hesitate a second before scrawling those words in all capital letters on the hand-held blackboard in front of him. He added a few stars around the borders then sat back and stared at it contentedly before stealing a glance at his (self proclaimed) friend next to him. When he saw Aizawa’s board as blank as his expression, Yamada’s jaw dropped in shock. “You still haven’t decided on a name?!!” Not bothering to look back at him, Aizawa droned, “I’m not planning on appearing in any media, so it doesn’t really matter to me.” “All right… Then, how about…” Mic pensively tapped his chin with the end of his pencil, the eraser bouncing off his skin. “ERASERHEAD!!” “Fine, fine, whatever…” Mic scooted his chair over and leaned in close as he watched Aizawa draw the letters with surprisingly neat handwriting. “Ooh… Does this make us matching? I mean. Not really matching, but, we’ll both have hero names that I thought up, so that’s matching in a way, isn’t it?” He turned his head to look at Aizawa, only to realize he was nearly nose-to-nose with his classmate, and for a moment, they stared wide-eyed at each other with equal expressions of surprise. The moment was short-lived, and Aizawa’s surprise quickly shifted to annoyance. He clenched his teeth and hissed, “Do you mind?” Mic couldn’t stop two short giggles from escaping his mouth. “No, I don’t mind, but I’ll back up for your sake anyways.” He returned to his desk, but not without a wink.
12 years ago. Third goal: Become a hero. Complete.
“ERASER!!” He puffed out his chest and pointed his index finger at Aizawa with incredible mock conviction, striking a pose in his new leather jacket and tight vinyl pants, his other hand still toying with the large speaker system now wrapped uncomfortably snug around his neck. “How do I look?! As a pro hero. Wonderful, dashing, right?!” Aizawa, his attention on the paperwork in front of him which would officialize his status as a pro hero, mumbled the reply “No different from always.” The room went silent save for the scratch of Aizawa’s pen against paper, and Mic’s hand fell to his side. Noticing the change in atmosphere, Aizawa paused and looked up to see a faint pink decorating Mic’s cheeks. “Wh-- I meant-- like an idiot. No different from always, you still look like a dunce. Not dashing in the least,” Aizawa hurriedly returned his eyes to the paper, ignoring the way Mic’s eyebrows had raised, and that dumb smile that had just begun to form on his lips, the same smile he always had when Aizawa gave him a compliment, intentional or not. That smile was making an appearance more and more often, lately. Aizawa feigned a cough and brought his arm up to his face, covering the blush that had begun to appear.
10 years ago. Fourth goal: Attain a staff position at UA. Complete.
“SHOUTA!!” He yelled as the apartment door opened, and promptly rushed in, shoving a hand-sized card in Aizawa’s face. “What…” “LOOK AT IT!!” He furiously shook the card, it’s surface tapping against Aizawa’s nose. “How the hell am I supposed to look at anything when you’re waving it like that?” He snatched the card out of his hands, and walked to the kitchen, where he sat on a stool and placed the card on the counter, inspecting it. UA STAFF TEACHER HERO DEPARTMENT PRESENT MIC Aizawa’s eyes widened, and he ran the tip of his finger over the UA insignia printed in the top corner. “When did you…” “Last month!! There was an opening! And I was one of the first applicants, and I got accepted last week, but I wanted to keep it a surprise, and today I finally got the ID…” Aizawa turned and looked at Mic. At his proud smile and eager posture, the way his gloved hands were clenched into excited fists at his side. He couldn’t see his eyes behind his sunglasses, but he knew the way they were crinkling at the corners, bright green irises seemingly sparkling. Mic looked at him too, and saw the way he didn’t blink when those tired eyes scanned him. It was something he’d noticed he’d do when he saw a cute cat too, or when he stared at his favorite painting in the art museum on the other side of the city. It was a beautiful way to look at things. Mic wondered if what he saw was the same thing he did when he looked in the mirror-- a fake, a rat, a villain. He hoped he never saw it. “What?” “H-..Huh?” Mic shook his head, coming back to reality. “Your face got awful serious all the sudden.” Aizawa blinked, his eyebrows lowered. The room was silent for a moment. “Got the shits again?” Mic’s mouth dropped open, then screwed up into a twisted cringe. “THAT WAS TWO WEEKS AGO!! AND IT WAS BECAUSE OF THAT DAMN TAKEOUT!! I TOLD YOU THAT RESTAURANT WAS SKETCHY, I DON’T KNOW WHY YOU LIKE IT SO MUCH!!”
5 years ago. Strike one: Become emotionally involved. Complete.
“Eraserhead, huh…? Congratulations.” Mic twirled the ring around in his hand, rubbing the engraving on the inside. /Always./ He took a pensive breath, slipping the ring on to his finger only to take it off again and resume fidgeting. “... Yeah. Thank you.” The ceremony had been beautiful, outdoors, with just enough breeze from the ocean to take the edge off the summer sun shining bright and golden overhead. Clean white suits, flower petals on the grass. Mic had organized the wedding in its aesthetics, on the condition that Aizawa organized the guest list. Mic had held those rough and scarred hands in his, looked into his dark brown eyes and told him, “I will love you forever.” In that moment, the words were endlessly sincere. Mic’s eyes saw nothing but him, his head thought of nothing but him. A blissful tunnel vision, now torn apart by the accomplice sitting on the worn couch in front of him. Torn, because the man, sneering crookedly and tapping his cigarette over an ashtray, was not congratulating him on his marriage. He was congratulating him on ensnaring himself inextricably deeper into his mission, into his very own lies and tricks and illusions. The way his glossy eyes squinted in the low light spelled a phrase unsaid: “Good fucking luck.”
“Mic.” “Mic.” “M--” Mic jumped, blinking rapidly. A low groan escaped his throat, which was throbbing, raw and sore. He tried to move his hand, and was met with a sharp pain shooting up his arm. Where was he? “Oh thank god…” Midnight sighed deeply, letting go a breath she’d been holding. “I told you he’d be fine. What, did you think I’d lie to you? You think I’m new to this?” Recovery girl replied in a tone of disbelief, quietly shaking her head. Oh. So that’s where he was. That’s what all the blurry white was-- the ceiling of the UA infirmary. He tried moving his hand again, only to have someone else’s cover it, and gently hold it in place. “No, Hizashi. Not yet.” A voice, deep and soft, murmured beside him. Mic turned his head, and found that a stiff, scratchy material restricted the movement of his neck. A brace. “You knocked yourself out pretty good, Mister. I don’t know what you were expecting taking on a villain twice your size all on your own. He was a monster. Not that you’d remember after that bump on your head, though.” It’s true, Mic didn’t remember fighting him. But he remembered the events before. The words that had reached his ears through the grapevine, that his organization would soon be sending an attack to breach the walls of UA. The cold, dense feeling in his gut, the anxiety shaking his fingers for days before he glanced out the window and saw a familiar face walking on the street below him. How had his legs run that fast? His mind had been left three steps behind. Perhaps his sense of pain had, too. The face he’d recognized was that of one of the most powerful grunts he knew, with a muscle manipulation quirk that gave him incredible mass and strength. Mic was no longer confused as to why a bone-deep ache was currently radiating through his entire body. The pain didn’t matter so much after he blinked again, though, when he saw Aizawa’s face mere inches away from his own, his eyebrows knit together in concern, the corners of his mouth curling upwards slowly as Mic met his eyes. “You’re a real idiot, you know.” No kidding. He’d just sent a member of his own association to the slammer. In a dark twist of irony, he’d committed a betrayal within a betrayal and deliberately shut down another mission-- and by extension, compromised his as well. This wasn’t pretty. Well, the situation wasn’t. Aizawa was.
“Traitor…” he muttered, inaudible at first. “There’s gotta be a traitor in our midst.” Why did he say that? Why? Even now, he can’t answer that question with confidence. The knowledge of what he was doing, of who he was, was a constant storm above him, raining and pouring. Increasingly each day seemed like monsoon season, and the waters had now reached dangerous levels-- perhaps this was a cry for help. But what help? There’s no lifeguard to pull him out of this one. This guilt isn’t a swimming pool, it’s an ocean. That day the water made a crack in the dam, and before he could register the words coming out, he was defending the hypothesis that would mean the termination of his mission. Maybe that’s what he wanted. Even then, though, he’d had some silly illusion in his head that there was a possible future in which that termination wasn’t something ugly and blood-soaked. That it would just be over, and he could go back home and hang up his jacket and leave the memories outside the door. He would walk down the hall and into the living room and see his Prince Charming laying on the couch with his eyes closed, a hand absentmindedly petting the cat who lay on his belly. Just like that, they’d live happily ever after. But in truth, he knew that he was no star-crossed pure protagonist. He was a villain. And there are no happy endings waiting for him.
He knew it was coming, and soon. He never returned the looks, but he felt the stares on his back, everywhere he went. He didn’t hear their voices, but he knew the words they spoke when they turned away, what all the topics of the recent meetings had been about, and why his attendance had not been requested. It was inevitable, and perhaps that knowledge was what hurt the most, despite the fact that he’d known it from the start. All things come to an end, for better or for worse. For better or for worse, he still came home that night and smiled with the same toothy grin he’d flashed when they first met eyes all those years ago. The air felt just as heavy in his home as it did everywhere else, but he ignored it, the same way one ignores the pain of a wound as they utter their last words. “I love you, Shouta…” The man in his arms did not reply, but Mic didn’t mind. He knew they both understood the state of the present, and the path of the future. But now, in this moment, all that mattered is that he could still feel his warmth, his thick hair, and scarred skin. His heart beating, strong and unfaltering. It reassured Mic. Even when he was gone, as long as that heart kept beating… That would be okay. Mic would be okay with that. “Do you know that? I love you so much.”
He left everything that day. Ungraded papers, happy birthday cards. Birth certificate, forged. His UA student uniform, that he still kept in a box in the closet. The speaker system he’d spent a whole year building and installing in every room, so the music never got far away. The leather jackets he’d been collecting since he was seventeen. Two rings on the nightstand. What did he care? Why would he miss it? All those documents, cards, certificates and records were all written with that fucking fake name. But somewhere along the way, it had started to feel real. Not when his teacher had called it out and he had answered, not when he had wrote it a thousand times and repeated it a thousand more. It was when Aizawa Shouta said his name that it sounded real. Maybe it was because he’d wantedthat name to be his. Something like, ‘If that’s the name he’s calling, then that’s me.’ It was all too real. A mask that became part of his skin. And now he had to rip it off. “... Hizashi…?” Aizawa rubbed his face, and his eyes cracked open to look at the face of the man kneeling by his bedside. He smiled and gently shook his head, placing a hand on Aizawa’s cheek. With his thumb he lightly brushed the corner of Aizawa’s lips, and looked into those deep brown eyes, glazed over with sleepiness. It was 3am. When Aizawa woke up in the morning, this memory should seem like a dream. He wished so desperately that every memory could seem that way, that he could wake up tomorrow with no clear recollection, only the faint notion that /perhaps/ something had occurred in those days past, but nothing of great consequence, that all of this would fade into nothing and he would continue on his way unaffected by the rest. For Aizawa, at least this moment would be a dream. For him, the memory would be burned like a brand in his mind.
10 minutes ago. Mission end.
“Yamada Hizashi.” “Yes.” “That has been your name for… how long, was it?” “Fifteen years, sir.” “Ah… Truly a long time. And you held out quite well.” The voice was momentarily muddled by television static. The warped light of the screen manipulated the shadows of the room, and the pupils of his eyes, unprotected by sunglasses, shrunk and dilated in alternation to adjust. “Excuse me.” The static settled. “Now… You have made mistakes. You are more aware of that than even I am.” The voice paused. If it was to gauge a reaction, then there was nothing to find, because he didn’t flinch, didn’t shudder, didn’t clench his fists. Green eyes stared unblinkingly forward, waiting for him to continue. “However, I don’t think any punishment will be necessary. The work you have completed has allowed great advances in our organization. Advances that you have seen yourself…” The image of Aizawa’s scar flashed behind his eyes. “... and some you have yet to see. I understand you have not come with much, today. And readjusting will not be easy. But I assure you, living in reality has its perks as well.”
Now.
“Good afternoon, Present M--” “That’s not my name.” Kurogiri paused, and looked at him for a moment from his place behind the counter. His dark face betrayed no emotion, as usual, but it was clear what was going through his mind. He took a seat on the barstool at the end, put his elbows on the counter, and put his head in his hands. “You’re wearing your hair down today.” Kurogiri remarked as he resumed his task polishing glassware. “Mic was the one who put his hair up.” He didn’t move his eyes from the counter. Even without looking, he was aware of the gaze he was receiving. Boy, had he gotten good at feeling stares. “Perhaps it would be best to cut it.” He didn’t respond for a while, just silently ran his fingers through his hair. It was soft, that’s what Aizawa would always say. That had been his excuse for petting it and playing with it, as if he were more a cat than the one they already had. His fingers twitched and paused. “Don’t wanna use my quirk anymore either.” He felt the stare shifting. “Try as you might, that may be unavoidable. Your role now is the symbol of UA’s internal weakness. One way or another, you’ll be made to stand at the front lines. And regardless of your unique status, missions will continue to be assigned, and you will be expected to complete them, just like the rest of us.” He switched to rubbing the bridge of his nose. He felt his breath hissing against his palms. “What you did wasn’t easy, and we commend you for that. But it is over now.” A drink was set in front of him, and the glass hit the counter with a ‘clink’. “Today marks the start of something new.” His arm swung out and struck the drink, and the glass hit the floor with a shattering symphony, cascading cracks and snaps bouncing their echos off the hard brick walls. The sound of something that was, in the past, a beautiful and carefully crafted object, transforming into its present form, ugly and dangerous. Scattered across the floor, the broken glass caught the light and sparkled, as if offering a knowing wink. “Someone new.”
