The Crows on TikTok:

Inej: Queen of dancing, but prefers to film circus skills ie high wire, the ribbon thing and knife throwing. Has a lot of collabs with Nina and Jesper. Kaz sometimes shows up in the background and people argue in the comments if he’s real or edited in. handle is @gravityghafa

Nina: Influencer. Fashion, food, body positivity. Does the dances, and is very good. The kind of influencer to be invited to premiers and shows. Always complains about the hair from Matthias’ dogs getting everywhere but there are a few videos on his account of her cuddling with them. handle is @ninawantswaffles

Matthias: Dad tiktok, teaching everyone how to cook/fix things. Also films commentary tiktoks rarely when he disagrees with political happenings on the app. Nina shows up a lot and they’re the cutest couple on the platform. handle is @helvarmatt

Wylan: Science side. blows things up a lot, sometimes on purpose, sometimes not. Jesper can be heard yelling in the back of some of his videos after a particularly big explosion. Those tiktoks quickly end after that. And can we mention the spelling in his captions? handle is @wylanvansunshine

Jesper: 100% does thirst traps. Wylan comments on every one. cannot decide on a name for him but its definitely something cringey and/or dumb

Kaz: his content is like that one asshole lock guy who breaks into locks whilst completely destroying them verbally. His comments are full of the weird hand simps, because his gloves slipped an inch down his wrist once. They want him to cosplay the Onceler. @kazilicious - Nina changed it and Inej said she thought it was cute so Kaz wouldn’t change it back

So inej is probably on the ground because this is the middle of the fight sequence, because in the beginning she seems to be getting up from the ground. She throws the knife, but she misses. So whoever she's fighting is a good fighter. Why's she wherever she is, it's mostly likely to break in. Also the lighting and the overall setting is similar to the wylan shot:

So wylan could be on stakeout (the butterfly has some significance I'm certain of it, perhaps alerting them or something). But on the other hand:

There seems to be a guard behind kaz here, and he isn't being very secretive, so maybe he's directing the mark to somewhere else, ie keeping the attention of whoever they're stealing from while inej goes to steal. but she gets found out. I don't know but these three scenes feel connected to me

I always see fanfics of Jesper‘s adhd manifesting as “can’t sit still for long periods of times, tapping & fidgeting” and while this is a genuine experience, adhd is SO MULTIFACETED and there are SO MANY different manifestations of it for different people! It’s not a one-size-fits-all, and as someone who has been told far too often that I “didn’t seem” like I had adhd just because I didn’t display the stereotypical symptoms, I’d like to propose some other ways for fic authors to show Jesper’s adhd!

Jesper not stopping or talking for HOURS while he fabrikates or practices shooting skills or something else he genuinely enjoys (seriously tho hyperfixation is a part of adhd that neurotypicals often forget about. Please include it!)

Jesper interrupting other people to say something completely unrelated that, to his mind, seems completely sensible

In a similar vein: Jesper having a genuinely good idea but failing to articulate it and being mocked for wasting time

Kaz telling jesper the plan and jesper being too afraid of being ridiculed to ask for clarification

Also: Jesper saying he understood something without actually realizing he didn’t internalize ANY information whatsoever

Or: Jesper saying he gets it, then popping back in 2 minutes later to ask for clarification on the entire plan

Jesper zoning out mid-conversation, or even at the beginning of a conversation (could be good for a wesper miscommunication/disagreement fic, but it’s important to remember that Jesper isn’t doing this because he doesn’t care about what wylan is saying, he’s most likely doing it because a) he had something on his mind and didn’t even realize wylan started talking, b) wylan said something that reminded him of something that distracted him. It’s often a struggle for people with adhd to corral our thoughts to focus conversations, but that doesn’t mean we don’t care, it just might take a minute!)

Jesper not being able to focus with certain sounds or in certain environments (ie, if the table is too small or the wrong size, if there’s too much or too little noise, etc)

There’s a LOT of other ways for adhd to manifest as well! I won’t claim to be an expert; I can only speak to my own experience with it. But if you’re interested in accurately representing Jesper or other characters with adhd, PLEASE do your research first! And if you have any fic recommendations, I am so here for them!

Warning, long post that may contain spoilers:

I keep thinking about Netflix's Shadow and Bone and the changes they've made to the characters. (Hello, hyperfixation!)

It has occurred to me that it's not just that film producers had to make the characters more palatable or relatable for a wider audience (though, this could be an factor in the changes). Some characters are easier to bring to life on the screen, simply because the viewers/ readers do not already know what is going on in their heads. (ie: Genya, David, MAL) So this a unique problem brought about by the multiple points of view we are granted in the books.

(It's different for Alina. The first 3 books were entirely from her point of view. Now we're faced with other points of view of the same situations, so everything should feel markedly different from the books. Even if the dialog is similar or identical... (I've never liked First Person POV btw)) Seeing Alina from a point of view outside herself actually made me like her more (same with Katniss Everdeen)

But with written medium, we're given internal narration, internal growth, and internal realizations. How do you translate that to the screen?

How can they express all those inner monologues and character narrations?:

DIALOG

Certainly, the easiest way to accomplish this is by having the characters speak these thoughts aloud for the viewer. Would they make this narration to another character, or just to themselves? There are not many situations that would feel natural to have an actor monologue to themselves.

Inej's ascent of the incinerator shaft could be one, if the writing, acting, and filming all come together just right! (Grumbling to herself about Kaz, weeping over what she has suffered, asking herself if she has the strength and will to carry on when her feet are burning and she feels her strength giving out, finding a purpose beyond Kaz... it was powerful. Would it still be powerful on screen, though?)

Speaking innermost thoughts we are provided in the books -- aloud, to another character -- inherently changes the character, makes them more open. Spoonfeeding the audience! ("No saint ever watched over me. Not like you have." - Kaz in the books would NOT be there yet!)

NARRATION

Overlaid audio narration? They only did that with Mal and Alina's letters. It would certainly be an odd choice and change the tone and pace of the show. (It brings to mind the difficulty of expressing telepathy in visual medium)

ACTING

Rely on an actors ability to provide a nuanced, complex performance? (Not all actors could manage it!) Jesper could have been a one-note character, just comedic relief. Kit's performance in Season 1 added depth to the character. And this year, they provided character development in the actual script (probably after seeing how well Kit performed with the material and fan reactions to his performance).

They relied more heavily on Freddy's acting this season. He was able to express the monstrosity of Kaz, be more nuanced in his expression for care in others instead of just having the script spell it out. (Him being so verbal in his care and affection for Inej last season makes this season feel like a regression (it's just how he really is in the books))

CHARACTERISATION

Change the characters external demeanor to better suit their internal thoughts and issues? (Again, spoonfeeding the audience!)

Wylan had a very fake-it-'til-you -make-it kind of confidence in the books. He was out of his depth, and he knew it; but he was determined to survive. It was his "suprising courage" that all the other Crows noticed. On screen, he reads as more skittish than I imagined him (It's hard for me to watch sometimes). But I figure that the writers wanted to give voice to his internal hesitance, the fear from which he's been running. How would they show his doubts otherwise in this medium? (But it has the surprising result that his external confidence is the opposite of the book lol!! Wylan is very forward about romantic and physical intimacy in the show!)

FLASHBACKS

Flashbacks! Now those WORK in visual medium.

Alina (and Mal), the Darkling, and Kaz have all had featured flashbacks that give depth to the character! (and Nina had a short one) Without changing how other characters interact to them! Nice bit of storytelling, but I'm guessing extra scripts, film, time, and actors would drive up expenses for a show... Maybe that's why there's been a limited number of them? With so many characters and storyline, there can only be so much focus on one at a time...

HALLUCINATIONS

And crack!fic way of expounding on a characters internal drama! Poison! Hallucinations! To help the character themselves AND the viewers grow by exposing fears, weaknesses, and insecurities! (Three (four?) of them faced siuations that challenged their worldview and could inspire growth (Did the hallucination imply Tolya needs to address his codependency with his twin?? Does he have a deep-seated fear of harming Tamar?? Or are his fears of being without her?? We never saw his POV in the books; so, there are so many possibilities!))

I MEAN IT WORKED, DIDN'T IT LMAO

So, yeah. I get why some characters had to be made more audience-friendly.

(I don't really have a point, I'm just hoping that by putting this down somewhere, it'll help with my hyperfixation. It's gotten a bit out of hand)

kaz is the type of dude to look like he has nirvana on his earbuds 120% of the time but it's always taylor or some song inej reccommended to him

jesper is a hyperpop kid no objections

matthias is either a britney dude or just plain doesn't listen to music (how?!?!?)

zoya doesn't have a music taste she just kinda plays anything but she can't survive without music

kuwei's a whatever-song-shows-up-on-my-fyp typa person

• the music is epiccc; i hope we get an amazing theme song and intro

I still can’t understand that Bardugo explains the absence of a Wylan POV in SOC with “he wasn’t a real crow yet” as if that is an argument. Matthias is even less of a crow! Wylan basically went to the Dregs while Matthias’s just part of the team for one job because Nina wants him out of prison and Kaz needs him enough to blackmail him into taking part. Matthias has never intended to stay in Ketterdam or even to join the Dregs.

Nor is SOC Wylan much different from CK Wylan; they have the same trauma, knowledge and goals and we just see more development from him in CK because he finally has a POV - although most we learn of his character has happened before the series even started. Hadn’t Bardugo invented his backstory yet when she wrote SOC, or what? Did she only become interested in him once she figured out later he’s some kind of baby Kaz?

I cannot know, but I do know that Wesper the couple are severely underdeveloped also because there isn’t a Wylan POV in SOC. Where Kanej and Helnik have many important scenes, there’re maybe two short flirty dialogues between Wesper. Compared to the other two main ships, Wesper are extraordinarily unproblematic and wholesome. Is this why? Did Bardugo care less about them, IE write in less depth about them, because Wesper are good and thus boring?

OH okay so i do have 1000 words of a secret tunnel au. which isn't what i'd do for an ATLA au in particular but? worth noting. if i were to do an atla au:

jesper is a secret earthbender (ie metal bender ie durast with a fancy hat)

wylan would be the son of a non-bender that basically took over an earthbending city (gf has pointed out that i've made wylan asami, whoops)

matthias would realistically be from a water bending region (the north) but i'd also prob make this an au where nonbenders like. took over

nina would be some sort of bender but im not sure? waterbender/bloodbender maybe? but grew up in earthbending cities

i also dont think kaz or inej would be benders but i think inej would really fuck with and respect the air nomads even if she isn't one

kaz is just doing mischief whether he can bend or not

also fwiw the secret tunnel au is "the crows kidnap a firebender child (kuwei) and take him out of the city via tunnels except ✨everything goes wrong✨"

oh hard same. i really don’t understand how they’re going to be structuring the season(s) while juggling both the s&b trilogy and the soc duology at the same time. i’m like...lowkey hoping that the dregs plotline in s1 is set up for a more in depth one (ie, the ice court heist) that they’re the focus of in s2. apparently wylan isn’t going to show up at all in s1 (according to wikipedia) so i’m just hoping that the ketterdam sections of the show focus on kaz picking up inej and jesper and him slowly gathering intel/piecing together the plan for the heist

tho tbh my ideal scenario is that they’re two different shows because that way i can just binge the six of crows while ignoring shadow and bone.

oh that is fascinating.

so i think that it would be different right from the start, because wylan wouldn't have gotten out of bed first. jesper probably would have woken first, realised wylan was sick (and get caught up in the fact that he was only outside because jesper "pushed him there"). jesper would be feeling a lot of guilt about the fact wylan got sick and probably spend most of the day hiding/trying to avoid seeing him and thinking about how much of a mistake he is. possibly he'd follow the same "go to barrel > get drunk > fight" relapse plot points in ch11, because this would probably be a proof point for him about the fact that everything he does leads to bad things for wylan, that he's inherently a fuck up that hurts other people, that wylan deserves better, etc etc.

that being said i do think that ultimately the overarching plot would still go on - jan would probably have (a relatively sick) wylan taken out of town when he was too weak to resist. i can see jesper finally getting up the courage to sneak into wylan's room to see him (possibly after kaz talks some sense into him) just for him to have disappeared, and sorta losing his mind.

(if i were feeling REALLY angsty i'd probably have the reunion scene go entirely differently as well, ie jesper would find wylan when he's still really ill and instead of the reunion they DO have in ch12, there'd probably be a really tender first aid moments (and then do what they do in ch12 when wy feels better 👀))

oooh oh god ok I’m not sure I can do every crow but I’ll do my best 😂

Inej: I’m not sure this fits in a canon-verse bc they don’t seem to define labels or put much emphasis on it but i think that on being queer, Inej… doesn’t really have any idea what’s going on? She’s fiercely in support of all her friends and sees no issue with anything, I just think she probably thinks for a very long time that that’s just life (ie she does that classic bisexual thing where you’re like ‘what do you mean EVERYONE loves girls’ like… no…..).

Kaz: bc Haskell had a brothel I like the idea that Kaz is now a brothel owner but like. Runs a unionised brothel. “There’s profit to be made but there’s MORE profit to be made if the workers don’t hate their job. I’m going to get them well-being perks”. Like he wouldn’t run it as ethically as one should bc he’s still in the name of money but yknow, he’d get them like, health insurance maybe

Matthias: this is kind of canon but like? Man really loves dogs 😂 I want to write him being a dog dad into more fics

Nina: I think she’s the type of person to have lots of hobbies and not tell anyone about them. Like “yeah I did a year of chocolatier-ing classes” Yknow? Will this come up in any fic I ever write? No, but I know it in my heart

Wylan: talks in his sleep. I fucking?? Love that headcanon and almost did a whole fic for it but I haven’t included it anywhere yet 😂

Jesper: “is nonbinary but puts it off because like, it’s not that big a deal, we don’t need to talk about it, it’s fiiiine” 😂 so if you read any fic of mine imagine that pre or post at some point Jesper has a gender crisis but procrastinates it
