Legally, in a way? My legal initials are the same as my late grandpas and I believe that was done on purpose. However, my chosen middle name is the same as his first name so he's still in my name.

I did dance as a kid! I also played soccer and I started to learn ice skating in my teens but fell off of it. I'd love to get back into ice skating and turn it into figure skating though.

Yeah I speak Chinese! In fact I speak both Putonghua/Mandarin (the "standard" Chinese) and Cantonese (branch of spoken Chinese used in Canton regions, including the Guang Dong Province, Macau, and Hong Kong, where I am) I speak Mandarin with my family (except for my sister who's also trilingual, we code-switch)

Ok, here's a quick Chinese lesson! (bare with me, but sharing bits of Chinese stuff with people here is so much fun to me :D)

哥, pronounced "Ge" is the character that means "older brother". In the Chinese language, we have the habit of double a character, sometimes it's as a nickname or making the implication that it's cute, for example, 狗狗 Gou-gou, literally "dog-dog" referring to cuter dogs, sometimes it's just kind of there, and it's often used when it comes to referring to immediate family. For example 媽媽 Ma-Ma meaning Mom, 爺爺 Ye-Ye meaning Grandpa, and in this case, 哥哥 Ge-ge meaning "old brother".

But the thing is when it comes to close friendships, we still refer to friends as family/sibling terms. For example, I have a little sister figure/friend who's my sister's classmate, and she calls me (my name)姐姐 "Older Sister". But as people get older, they tend to use a single character, so for example, I call my older sister figure friend (her name)姐, the same word, but a singular character.

So in adult friendships nowadays, if you're close, you tend to use the singular character. Back in the old days young women also called their boyfriends 哥哥 while guys called their girlfriends 妹妹 ("Mei Mei". little sister), but that's outdated and no longer really used (unless in a teasing manner) and by today's standards kind of has problematic implications.

All this to say, Nick would most likely call Taylor 哥 Ge, singular! Potentially, he would call him Taylor哥 or as Chinese fans call him 泰勒 (“Tai Le”Offical translate of his name)/ 忒樂 ("Tei Le"Fan translation of his name)哥！

A quick note though, usually the younger will call the older one by their singular character honorific, so 姐or 哥, but the older one will call the younger on either by their name/nickname, or in rarer cases, with their double-character honorific. So if somehow the boys miraculously started speaking Chinese with each other, Nick might call Taylor 哥, but Taylor would still call Nick by his name.

Wei Ying flips around on his tiny dorm bed again, facing the ceiling, and blows out a loud, unhappy breath. Empty silence echoes back at him. The dorm walls are thin, and the room is on the second floor halfway towards the communal bathrooms, so usually that means there will always be sounds of shuffling feet and muffled laughter floating from the halls. Except it’s reading week, which means half the building’s occupants are gone.

It’s too quiet. Huaisang’s fucked off back home to the east coast because their brother misses them too much. Wen Ning and Wen Qing both went back to their popo’s home outside of the city, and Mianmian joined one of the Hong Kong student clubs’ skiing trip. Jiang Cheng’s also across the city back home, texting Wei Ying every day to complain about being unable to bingewatch Netflix shows during dinner because of his mother. Wei Ying knows that it’s his brother’s way of checking up on him and reminding him he’s not missing out on much, but Wei Ying kind of wishes he wouldn’t. Wei Ying made the choice to stay on campus for the break. It’s fine. He actually has a lot of papers to catch up on. He’s fine.

Except tonight, the quiet is too much. It’s barely halfway through the week, and he’s tired. A little sad, maybe. He could probably grab some international students on the floor above and hit up some clubs, but he doesn’t even feel like getting drunk. 

Wei Ying grabs his phone. He squints at the screen as he opens his contacts. He scrolls through his entire list, feeling the heavy weight in his chest sink even further. 2:49 am. Too late to bother someone when he doesn’t even know what he wants. To hear someone’s voice? To talk at them until he falls asleep? This week is supposed to be a break; people deserve to take a break from him, too.

His finger lingers on Lan Zhan’s name. He taps open their chat log. The last message was two days ago, when he sent a picture of the snow on main mall and Lan Zhan responded with a snowman emoji and a gentle reminder to dress warmly. That guy really is too nice for his own good. Despite knowing Lan Zhan’s grandpa-early bedtime, Wei Ying pulls up a new message. 

He types, lan zhan!!!!!!!1 and then erases it. how’s your break so far? sounds too random. i miss you is too honest. He goes back to lan zhan, and just stops there. The guy’s asleep. He’s not going to find the message until tomorrow, but Wei Ying knows Lan Zhan will follow up after noticing the time stamp. He swallows the lump in his throat, squeezing his eyes shut. He doesn’t want to be a bother.

When he opens his eyes again, he sees the message has been sent. Wei Ying blinks. He lifts his thumb off the send button, where he must have accidentally brushed it. “Fuck,” he says. 

The phone buzzes in his hand. Wei Ying nearly throws it off the bed in surprise.

Wei Ying stares at his phone. He can hear Lan Zhan’s smooth, steady voice, can picture the calm expression as his best friend waits for an answer. Even through text, Lan Zhan knows him. Wei Ying blinks away the sudden sting behind his eyes.

He takes too long to reply, because Lan Zhan sends another message. Do you want to call?

Wei Ying barely hesitates before hitting the call button. Lan Zhan picks up right away, and for a moment, they both just listen to each other breathe. Then:

“Wei Ying,” Lan Zhan says, and Wei Ying sucks in a breath. Something about the oppressing quiet all around him in the dark dorm room, something about Lan Zhan’s familiar voice filtered through the phone into his ear---it shatters the flimsy shield Wei Ying has put up around his heart.

“Lan Zhan,” he says, voice trembling. He clears his throat. “Sorry. I know it’s late for you.”

“Mm. Are you alright?”

No, Wei Ying thinks. But he has never quite learned how to admit that out loud. “I don’t,” he says instead, “want to talk about me. Tell me about your break, Lan Zhan.”

So Lan Zhan does. He talks about getting a head start on studying for midterms, attempting to bake cookies with his brother. The rabbit he finally convinced his brother to bring into their apartment. Wei Ying laughs at all the right places. He curls up under his covers and tries to wrap Lan Zhan’s voice around himself, too.

“I’m glad,” says Wei Ying, yawning, “that it’s been good so far. I want to try your cookies, Lan Zhan. I’ve just been treating myself to chicken nuggets every day.”

Lan Zhan pauses. Slowly, he asks, “Wei Ying. If you’d like... would you like to come stay with me and my brother for the rest of the week?”

Wei Ying freezes. He pulls back to stare at the phone to check he hasn’t fallen asleep after disconnecting. Maybe he suddenly forgot how to speak Mandarin and his mind twisted Lan Zhan’s gibberish into a guilty desire? 

“Wei Ying,” Lan Zhan is saying. “You do not have to.”

“No,” Wei Ying blurts. “I mean. I---Lan Zhan. I’m fine. You don’t have to. It’s just a few more days, and then Huaisang will be back, and we’ll be drowning under papers and exams---”

“Wei Ying,” Lan Zhan says, so gently, and Wei Ying’s breath hitches. “Come stay with me. Just until the weekend.”

Helplessly, Wei Ying can only say yes.

Random things from the Shadow of Kyoshi that just make sense (or not)

Loongkau, the name of the ghetto Miss Kyoshi raids are the start of the book, is in fact, Cantonese for 壟溝 “gutter/ditch”. these intimidating lookin lil suckers r in the traditional script, & the simplified version is 垄沟 (lóng gōu). no funny business here; p accurate name

extremely random, but, when Kyoshi punched the wood table in her mid-ring apartment, it was mentioned that the joinery cracked. traditional Chinese wood constructs are not held together by nails, but rather carved pieces at the ends that join together like puzzle pieces and provides fixture. they r called 榫卯 (sǔn mǎo)

what rly impresses me abt them is that these fixtures are used to hold together wood structures under whole tiled ceilings; oh yes, no glue, no nails, just expertly carved wood. I’m not gonna do it justice here u can search it up to learn more if ur interested ;)

Erhu !!! Ugh I love this one. 二胡 (èr hú) is a traditional Chinese string instrument that looks like a hammer with an elongated handle and two strings wow a horrible description; the notes it plays sound v sorrowful to me and i think it has something to do with the notes being in the minor scale ??? (I can’t music theory AT ALL don’t take my word for anything)

but yeah I have emotional attachment to that instrument bc my mother & my late grandpa both love it. one of my mother’s favorite pieces (also one of the most famous erhu pieces) is a piece called 赛马 (sài mǎ) “horse racing” and it’s a perfectly thrilling and passionate piece that I am also a huge sucker for ok this is getting off topic

oh I love the use of Aiyaa 哎呀 (āi yā, not only limited to the one tone tho — pronouncing it is like singing in this case: depends on the context) it’s just a very common expression for a multitude of emotions it’s so Chinese i love it sm

Jinpa’s bison Yingyong, I am kinda unsure about bc for some reason my first instinct was 阴阳 (yīn yáng) which I believe everyone knows at this point; I think it should be 英勇 (yīng yǒng) “heroic and brave”

...but what’s interesting & a piece of useless info is that mandarin for apps (applications) is 应�� (yìng yòng); same sound, different tones funny kinda?

now this one is absolutely useless but there’s a Chinese soccer player with the name Yangchen, 杨晨 (Yáng Chén)

the closest irl approx. of “kill two spidersnakes with one stone” is probably the idiom “kill two birds with one stone”, which actually has a very close match (both literally and figuratively) in mandarin four-character idiom (四字成语 sì zì chéng yǔ or just 成语 chéng yǔ) — 一箭双雕 (yī jiàn shuāng diāo) “one arrow (shoots down) two eagle”

Koulin, aka the girl who rightfully got decked in the face by Rangi, my guess at the Chinese characters for her name would be 寇林 or 寇琳 (both Kòu Lín; the second choice’s character for Lín is conventionally used for female names). I chose 寇 bc it originally means “bandits/invaders” or just “enemies” in general, and using it in the name of a character usually indicates villainous status.

also technically the Chinese translation of Zuko’s name also has this character (祖寇, zǔ kòu)

Peony and Camellia, oof eek dunno how I feel abt talking abt this. So, peonies, 牡丹 (mǔ dān), are the closest thing to a national flower for China. Camellia, or 山茶花 (mandarin, shān chá huā) / 藪椿 (Japanese, ヤブツバキ yabutsubaki) / Camellia japonica (binomial/scientific name), obviously carries a lot of meaning and history for Japan (even though a little overshadowed by the cherry blossoms) as it has been ever present in a lot of poetry & has some almost religious reverence tied with it.

Now a conflict btw two clans with these flowers as symbols just feels a lil too poignant to miss; like it honestly just may be a passing mention and what happened in the books plot wise has no relation with anything real world but Sino-Japanese Wars flash backs go brrrrrr

zo/so, the character that almost prompted a civil war, is the kanji 祖 (in pinyin it is zǔ), and as mentioned in the text it means “ancestor/forefather”.

the name Huazo, if we’re going by zo = 祖, could be 府阿祖 (ふあぞ), which can mean at least according to this translator I’m using founder of a prefecture (a district under the government apparently) which is kinda fitting for her tbh

Joonho, 준호, Korean given name

the ceramic gaiwan, as a drinking vessel used by the woman at the tea shop in the chapter Home Again, is 盖碗 (gài wǎn) “lidded bowl”, a tea serving set popular during the Qing dynasty (Yongzheng times). it is always a set of three: 上有盖, 下有托, 中有碗 “lid on top, supporting dish at the bottom, bowl in middle”

茶托 “tea supporting dish” also was referred to as 茶船 “tea boat” & i just think that is cute & neat

16. Have you ever stopped writing a fic/for a fandom because it wasn’t receiving enough attention?

Yes and no. I’ve never intentionally stopped but after a while, it gets disheartening when your fic doesn’t get any attention. Usually, I always mean to come back to it and it never happens. 

However, I’m not at that paoitn with any of my current fics at this time.

18. What’s your most underrated fic?

I think its a toss up between Will You Tell Me About Mama? or Banana Ghosts and Mandarin Pumpkins. 

Will You tell me about Mama? was a very angsty fic that went into the story of Yur’s mom and the story behind why Yuri lives with his grandpa before he goes to Saint Petersburg to train with Yakov. It was extremely planned out and thought out but still, it wasn’t super popular.

Banana Ghosts and Mandarin Pumpkins was a fluffy OT4 fic (the only OT4 fic that I’ve published) and that I did for Halloween week last year. It’s really sweet but once again not very popular.

47. If someone you know in real life who isn’t involved in fandoms asked to read your work, would you let them? If yes, what would you recommend they read first?

Now, I’ve done this before. My ex-girlfriend wasn’t in a fandom when we were dating and still isn’t (that I know of) and when we were dating I wanted her to read my work so she could see what I spent so much time on. She had agreed at first and it went downhill from there. She was a reason I took a year-long hiatus before joining the yuri on ice fandom after we broke up.

I dunno if I would ever show my work to another person outside of the fandom after that. I’ve had writer friends, who aren’t fandom writers, say that my fics weren’t real writing since it's not entirely original. 

So, I dunno. But if I did have someone look into my work that wasn’t a fandom person themselves, I’d have them start with something like The First Impression or maybe The Bronze. 

50. Has writing fanfic had a significant impact on your life? Would you say it’s entirely positive?

HELL YEAH! In fact, at the end of the month, it’ll be eight years since I posted my first fanfic. Eight years of my life has gone into the fandom life and it has been pretty amazing. I’m at my happiest when I’m writing and it has given me many great mutuals and friends. Of course, it's not all sunshine and rainbows when it comes to writing; there is a lot of stress and worrying and sleepless nights trying to make a deadline, but it has been amazing nonetheless.

V likes amusement parks. He especially likes the gyro drop, gyro swing and roller coasters (boi we can go together because same)

rogue one: passing fanmeta: "good luck, little sister"

There's a lot of reasons I adore Baze's "good luck, little sister" line (primarily: FOUND FAMILIES!!!), but one metatextual reason is... Modern English-speaking culture (US-American, to be specific, because I'm not familiar with British/etc mores) doesn't have a strong history of calling non-relatives by anything other than their names. Even relatives have a limited list - Mom, Dad, Aunt, Uncle, Grandma, Grandpa, sometimes cuz, sis, and bro. We can consider unrelated people as our sisters and brothers, of course, but a US-American doesn't usually/casually SAY things like, "Sister, can I borrow your phone?" to a friend. (Heck, even siblings don't constantly call each other "sister" or "brother" directly. Heck, there are families where you call your parents by their first name.) The closest, I guess, is the relatively recent popularization of the word "bro." But in the Asian cultures I'm part of - and the ones I'm familiar with - there's a strong tradition on calling both relatives and non-relatives by kinship terms, though the frequency may vary with the latter (some will only use the terms with friends/family friends; others with basically anyone). And Chinese culture is SUPER INTO this practice. Seeing Baze say "little sister" to Jyn made me happy because FAMILY!!!, but it also made me happy because it was an Asian cultural trait* being said by an Asian man in a Western-made, English-language film, and it was respectfully, meaningfully done. It's the type of detail that wouldn't have occurred in a film that wasn't (a) so diverse, (b) so purposefully diverse, and (c) didn't care/respect that diversity. If the role of Baze had not been given to an Asian, I really doubt the line would have been the same. It would have simply been, "Good luck, Jyn." And since the screenplay was written by two white, probably-have-English-as-their-first-language US-American men, either (a) they decided to write it as a cultural nod to Jiang Wen when they discovered his casting (possible) or (b) Jiang Wen himself thought, "You know what gives this scene more gravitas? what I would say if I was speaking Mandarin? I'd call her 'little sister'" and everyone was like HELL YEAH (much more likely). Star Wars has always been heavily, heavily influenced by Eastern cultures (with "influenced" at times being "outright stole these ideas"). So, yes, it makes me happy to see Asia represented, to see our cultures represented and given credit, to see our people FINALLY represented. There's always going to be a lot of uphill work**, but I'm going to take a moment to enjoy this small victory. ... And that's why the "little sister" scene will always warm my heart. *not solely Asian, of course **fuck you, Netflix Death Note. Fuck you, Han Solo movie.

The Chang-Yang Family - Part 1

INT. HOGWARTS EXPRESS - AISLE - AFTERNOON                  STUDENTS fill the corridor. They're talking, laughing,                  kissing, holding hands, watching videos on their mobile                  devices, being casual, being carefree.                      INT. HOGWARTS EXPRESS - COMPARTMENT - DUSK                  MICHELLE CHANG-YANG, 15, Black, sits in a compartment                  with her friends. 15 year old AISHA GOLDSMAN, a girl with                  rich brown skin and long, deep red braids, is reading                  BLACK MAGIC, a hair & beauty magazine and laughing at:                  JAMES POTTER, also 15, a tall, brown haired boy, whose                  makeup keeps being altered by LYRIC SCAMANADER, 16.                  Lyric's light brown skin and bright, red afro glow as she                  debates with James over the softer pallet she prefers on                  his skin rather than the dark and bold color scheme he                  usually wears.                  Michelle holds a book that she doesn't read and sits                  still, her attention caught by whatever is on her mind.                    The train zooms by the moors of SCOTLAND, beautiful and                  bone-chilling, but she doesn't seem to notice. Her                  friends laugh raucously and still, nothing draws her gaze                  from her hands.                  EXT. PLATFORM 9 3/4 - NIGHT                  CHO CHANG, 49, Chinese, stands on the train platform and                  doesn't interact with any of the waiting families. She is                  dressed to kill in a bright, color blocked pants-suit,                  hair and nails perfectly manicured. In front of her face,                  a screen floats. Cho uses her wand to scroll down and                  read the next few paragraphs of the report displayed.                  SMALL AND LARGE GROUPS OF FAMILIES have clustered in                  their winter gear, making mindless chatter about their                  yule plans and stealing glances at Cho who doesn't even                  wear a coat.                    In moments, the HOGWARTS EXPRESS, in all of its crimson                  and black glory, roars into the station and the air fills                  with anticipation. Cho waves her wand to disappear the                  screen. Suddenly she is excited and scans the crowd of                  students eagerly. The too-cool-for-school business woman                  of 2 minutes ago completely disappears when Cho spots the                  person she's looking for.                                         CHO                            Bones! Bones! Shelly Bones!                  Cho's waving and calling out isn't helping. She rushes                  past the crowd in front of her and catches up to                  Michelle, who is moving quickly towards a column to exit.                                         CHO                            Bones!                  Michelle turns around, surprise evident on her face.                                         MICHELLE                            Mama?!                  Cho embraces her daughter tightly. Michelle is still                  surprised but returns the hug.                                         CHO                            Where are your friends? I told                            Harry and Ginny we'd bring James                            home.                                         MICHELLE                            He's going to the movies with Ish                            and Lyric. So, what's up? What are                            you doing here??                                         CHO                            Baby, it's your 16th birthday. I                            know you didn't think I would let                            someone else be here.                                         MICHELLE                                 (rolling her eyes)                            My birthday is NEXT Saturday.                                         CHO                            Your birthday is the month of                            December. And nobody is picking up                            my baby from the train for her                            16th birthday visit-but me. I                            forced all of the UK to                            accommodate my schedule only for                            my daughter to be unimpressed by                            my appearance.                                 (She lets out a                                  dramatic sigh)                             Ready to go?                  Cho takes Michelle's hand and begins walking towards the                  column.                  There is a short line of people waiting to go through but                  she goes to the front and steps in front of the family                  beginning to push themselves into the brick column.                                         CHO                            Hi, sorry, just got word. Big                            emergency. Happy Christmas to you.                  Cho steps through the column, leaving Platform 9 3/4                  behind. Michelle glances at the stunned family,                  embarrassed. She mumbles something unintelligible and                  follows her mother through the column.                  INT. CHANG GRANDPARENTS DINING ROOM - NIGHT                  Michelle and Cho sit on opposite sides of a small dining                  room table. At the head of the table is GRANDPA CHANG,                  60s, kind with a bright twinkle of humor in his eyes, and                  GRANDMA CHANG, 60s, the resident bearer of truth in the                  family, sits across from him.                      All dialogue in italics is in Mandarin                                         MICHELLE                            The only class I'm worried about                            is Defense Against the Dark Arts.                                         GRANDMA CHANG                            Do you need an OWL in that?                                         CHO                            She wants an OWL in all her                            courses Mama.                                         GRANDPA CHANG                            Of course she does.                                         MICHELLE                                 (staring at her                                  plate)                            It's because I don't know what                            career I want.                                         CHO                            Right now, she wants to work in                            Magical Law as much as she wants                            to be a Healer.                                         GRANDPA CHANG                                 (proud)                            And last month, you thought it                            would be fun to be an author.                                         GRANDMA CHANG                            You have so many interests little                            one.                                         CHO                            It's that curious mind you have.                                         MICHELLE                            Yeah.                  The adults look at one another questioningly. Michelle is                  pushing the food around on her plate but has hardly eaten                  anything.                                         CHO                     ��      Your father said you're doing                            really well in Transfiguration.                                         MICHELLE                                 (Michelle's head                                  snaps up at this)                            ...yeah.                  They all look at her expectantly.                                         MICHELLE                            It helps that he teaches it? I'm                            not afraid to try anything in that                            class.                  Michelle gives them a small smile and takes a bite of                  food before another question can be asked. Everyone is                  quiet for a moment.                                         CHO                            You alright honey?                                         MICHELLE                            Yes Mama, I'm fine.                  Grandma Chang pats her daughter on the hand                  understandingly. Teenage girls, what are you gonna do?                  They carry on the conversation and leave Michelle to her                  thoughts.                  INT. CHANG GRANDPARENTS LIVING ROOM - NIGHT                  Michelle and Grandpa sit on the floor, an elaborately                  Chinese styled game of Wizards Chess between them.                  Grandpa is the clear winner at this point.                  Several of Michelle's bronze pieces lie destroyed on the                  floor in front of him while his red pieces stand tall                  across the board.                                         GRANDMA CHANG                            You know, little one, I haven't                            beat you this bad since last year.                  Michelle barely laughs.                                         GRANDPA CHANG                            Let's call the game a draw, hm?                            And talk about you.                                         MICHELLE                            I never draw.                                         GRANDPA CHANG                            Then let's talk about what's on                            your mind then finish playing. I                            don't like playing against a                            zombie. It's not a good game.                  Michelle doesn't speak right away. Her eyes stay on the                  Chess board, and the piece she's holding. Grandpa sits                  patiently.                                         MICHELLE                                 (so low it's almost a                                  whisper)                            I've made a big decision but I                            don't know how to tell Mama.                                         GRANDPA CHANG                            Your Mama is a strong girl. Tell                            her whatever it is.                                         MICHELLE                            What did you think when she                            brought me home the first time?                  This time it's Grandpa Chang who doesn't speak right                  away. After a moment, he looks Michelle in her eye and                  doesn't look away while he responds.                                         GRANDPA CHANG                            I thought my daughter had went                            crazy.                  Michelle absorbs this, still holding his gaze even though                  she doesn't want to.                                         GRANDPA CHANG                            32 years old, no husband, no                            boyfriend. Busy job. A 2 year old                            child she found in a building.                            Black girl. I think 'ah, she                            finally fall apart from the school                            boyfriend's death.'                                         MICHELLE                            It was an orphanage, Grandpa. And                            she's told me about him. He sounds                            really nice. Do you think they                            would've gotten married and had                            their own family.                                         GRANDPA CHANG                            Own family?                                         MICHELLE                            Their own children.                                         GRANDPA CHANG                            Who's child are you then?                                         MICHELLE                            I know I'm Mama's child. I just                            wonder if she would've had her own                            children if she could.                                         GRANDPA CHANG                            She can. She chose you. She said                            you were born to belong to each                            other.                  Grandpa Chang takes the piece from Michelle's hands and                  moves it on the board. He begins playing against himself.                                         GRANDPA CHANG                            Talk to your Mama, little one. She                            will help you. You belong to all                            of us and we belong to you.                  INT. CHANG HALLWAY - NIGHT                  Cho and Michelle side along apparate into the front                  hallway of their home.                                         CHO                            Pretty soon, I'm going to miss                            that. You're growing up so fast, I                            lose a little bit of you every                            day.                    She places a kiss on her daughter's forehead and lets her                  go.                                         MICHELLE                            Mama...Mama, I need to be Chinese.                  Michelle looks at her mother expectantly but Cho can't                  pretend like she understands. She can't even follow where                  this conversation is going.                                         CHO                            Can you give me a little more?                                         MICHELLE                            I've been working on a spell.                            Since last year. It'll...make me                            Chinese.                                         CHO                            Baby, I don't understand.                                         MICHELLE                            I want to look like my family. I                            need to look like my family.                  Cho finally registers what's going on just stares. She                  can't believe this.                                         MICHELLE                            The spell is permanent.                  Cho cries out but Michelle, unable to stop now that she's                  begun, continues.                                         MICHELLE                            I've chosen my birthday as the                            transformation date so I need to                            get back to Hogwarts next week.                            Dad's going to be there to help me                            and make sure nothing goes wrong.                                         CHO                            Okay, just. Wait.                  Cho puts her hands up, gesturing for Michelle to stop.                  They stand there, looking at one another, each needing to                  express more. More thoughts, more questions, more                  beliefs, more viewpoints. But they can't. So they stand.                  INT. HOGWARTS HEADMISTRESS OFFICE - DAY                  Cho is no longer standing. She's pacing. Furiously. She                  is a ball of tightly wound energy and when MICHAEL YANG,                  38, Chinese, the consummate academic, enters the room,                  she unleashes it all on him. The door to the Headmistress                  of HOGWARTS' office hasn't closed before Michael has been                  disarmed and pinned to the wall in a burst of incensed                  magic by Cho.                  HERMIONE GRANGER, 49, Headmistress, is alarmed but                  instantly aware that she will have to be the voice of                  reason. She quietly calls out to Cho from her desk.                                         HERMIONE                            Cho. Can you please let my                            professor down from the wall?                                         CHO                                 (she only has                                  attention for                                  Michael)                            How. Dare. You.                                         MICHAEL                            Let me down. Now!                  Cho doesn't budge. She is all fire and fury. Hermione                  disarms her, releases Michael and has them both pinned to                  the seats in front of her desk in a matter of moments.                  Cho watches as Hermione draws another spell with her wand                  and encloses them in a large, clear cube. A thin,                  transparent wall stands between her & Michael's chairs                  from floor to ceiling. Cho leaps from her chair, her rage                  temporarily directed to Hermione but the air outside the                  cube seems to be peaceful & undisturbed.                                         HERMIONE                            The cube is soundproof. I assume                            this...conversation is about your                            daughter so I can't hear a word                            you're saying. Yell, scream, do                            whatever you need. My office was                            chosen for a reason so just let me                            know when you're done and ready to                            explain what my role is supposed                            to be.                    Hermione turns her back on them.                                         CHO                            I hate that bitch!                                         MICHAEL                            Cho.                                         CHO                            Don't say my name! Don't you dare                            say my name! How could you                            Michael?!                                         MICHAEL                            She asked me.                                         CHO                            And the answer is no! You don't                            get to help my daughter feel like                            she's not good enough!                                         MICHAEL                            You need to listen to OUR daughter                            about what she wants. We don't                            have the right to tell her no.                                           CHO                            Yes we do Michael! We're her                            parents. It's what the fuck we do!                            She's young, she wants to make a                            decision that will affect her for                            the rest of her life and WE TELL                            HER NO!                                         MICHAEL                            Have you even talked to her about                            it? She came to me because she                            knew you wouldn't listen-                                         CHO                            AND YOU, YOU WORTHLESS ASSHOLE,                            YOU SHOULD'VE COME TO ME                            IMMEDIATELY!                                         MICHAEL                            My name is Michael. And you're not                            the only one that cares about-                                         CHO                                 (disbelieving)                            If you care about her, act like                            it!                  Cho walks to the edge of the cube and bangs on it to get                  Hermione's attention.                                         HERMIONE                                 (as though on a loud                                  speaker)                            Is everything alright?                                         CHO                            Let us out of here.                  She gestures, remembering Hermione's instructions that                  they can't be heard.                                         HERMIONE                            Are you done? I can't have you                            throwing Professors all over my                            office Cho.                  Every portrait hanging in the office voices their support                  of Hermione and their outrage at Cho's behavior.                                         CHO                            Just let us out.                  Hermione vanishes the walls surrounding Michael and Cho.                  They don't take their seats again but they stay on                  opposite sides of the room.                                         HERMIONE                            So...why are we here?                                         CHO                            Professor Yang, please.                                 (she gestures                                  invitingly)                            Why don't you continue the                            conversation I'm sure you've been                            having with Professor Granger.                            Certainly you and my daughter                            haven't set these grand plans to                            take place on school grounds next                            week and not shared them the                            Headmistress.                                         HERMIONE                            Professor Yang?                                         MICHAEL                            Michelle came to me at the                            beginning of the school year and                            informed me of an advanced                            transfiguration spell she's been                            working on-                                         CHO                            You knew about this in September?!                                         MICHAEL                            -to permanently alter her                            appearance.                  Cho makes a noise of frustration. The Headmasters hanging                  on the wall are shocked but Hermione urges Michael to                  continue.                                         MICHAEL                            Her entire family is Chinese and                            she wants to...look like the rest                            of us.                                         HERMIONE                            Am I to understand that Michelle                            is planning to perform a spell                            that will permanently make her                            appear Chinese?                                         CHO                            I'm being quiet because if I say                            anything, I'll scream.                                         HERMIONE                            Certainly, Professor Yang, you                            wouldn't allow a student to                            perform that kind of experimental,                            and likely illegal, magic on the                            premises.                                         MICHAEL                            She's done the research, there are                            no laws on record outlawing the                            magic.                                         HERMIONE                            Currently.                                         MICHAEL                            The spell combines 3 forms of                            interchangeable magic in a way                            I've never seen before. It's a                            transfiguration spell supported by                            a charm and a potion, both of                            which she also created. It's quite                            remarkable Professor Granger.                                         CHO                            That doesn't make it right,                            Michael!                                         HERMIONE                            As impressive as the magic sounds                            Professor Yang-                                         MICHAEL                            -It's a personal project and would                            take place when students aren't in                            term! Michelle is not a student                            next week, she's my child visiting                            me at my home.                                         HERMIONE                            Which is my school.                                         CHO                            My daughter is Black, she is                            beautiful and she's going to be                            both of those things forever.                                         MICHAEL                            Our daughter is brave and                            brilliant and determined to do                            this!                                         HERMIONE                            That may be the case but she can't                            do it here at Hogwarts. If                            Michelle wants to return to school                            with a new...face, that's a family                            matter, that I would expect the                            ministry to weigh in on, but I                            cannot allow you to carry on this                            experiment here. And I'm very                            disappointed in you Professor                            Yang, that you would abuse your                            position in this way.                                         CHO                            Michael Yang, you listen to me.                                 (she's crying now)                            You cannot do this. Don't do this.                                           MICHAEL                            At 14 years old, Michelle created                            a spell that most hundred year old                            witches and wizards can't fathom.                            And she is very clear about her                            reasons for doing so. You don't                            get to tell her who to be Cho. You                            think that's your job as her                            parent but it isn't.                            I'm telling you in no uncertain                            terms that she has my full support                            and will have my full assistance                            however SHE chooses to see this                            through.                                 (to Hermione)                            Professor Granger, I apologize.                  Michael wordlessly calls his wand to him and storms down                  the stairs.                                                         TO BE CONTINUED...
