Constructive criticism: X-Men: Days of future past
Ah yes, X-Men: Days of future past. Desperate to distance themselves from the trainwreck that was X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and to keep the rights from reverting back to Marvel, 20th Century Fox made X-Men: Days of future past. A film with time traveling, so that the classical X-Men could meet and be replaced by the new and marketably teenified X-Men from the rebooted timeline. Better than X-Men: First class which was much better than X-Men Origins: Wolverine. (Then again, how hard could that be?) There are a few small things that bugs me, like Mystique impersonating Stryker at the end. What was that for? Can`t Stryker be evil by himself? But I didn`t make this with mindset of "Things I would like to change in Bryan Singer`s X-Men: Days of future past" but with the mindset of "What if they hadn`t messed up X-Men Origins: Wolverine so badly?" I know, I sound like a broken record, but it IS the reason that they rebooted the franchise from scratch. So... if I had a mutant buddy who could phase me back in time to my younger body so that I could make some changes to this movie... What would I change?
Plot The future: A dystopian environment where chaos, fire, and hell run rampant, giant robotic machines called Sentinels roam around the burning rubble, hunting down mutants and anyone else who takes their side. Most mutants were taken down one after another. A little mutant girl is travelling through the landscape, trying to survive. Sentinels show up, they try to capture her. Blob, Avalanche, Pyro and Toad show up. They give the girl a chance to escape. They fight the sentinels and manage to defeat one of them but are killed by the others. They have lived as villains, but they died as heroes. Elsewhere: Sunspot, Bishop, Blink, Iceman, Colossus, Warpath and Forge are at a hideout. A few minutes later, the X-Jet arrives, carrying Wolverine, Storm, Professor X and Magneto. They talk a little. This terrible world that they live in happened because Mystique killed Bolivar Trask, the man who invented sentinels. Elsewhere: Cyclops, Havok, Rogue, Cannonball, Dazzler Siryn and Gambit are hiding at a different hideout, Rogue thinks she should go to the other hideout, the one where Kitty and Forge is hiding. Kitty is important and she needs as much protection as possible. After some mild arguing they agree, Rogue says goodbye to them all, but mostly to Gambit (They are a couple now.) and flies away. (That`s right! Rogue can fly now!) Kitty goes to see Forge, who has built a timemachine out of an old electric chair. She sits in the chair, is strapped in, Forge pulls the lever and Kitty is sent back in time to the mid 2010s. (That`s right! Instead of Kitty developing timetravelling powers and sending Logan back in time to the 1970s, Kitty is sent back to the time period that was when this movie came out.) The present: Young Kitty is walking in the hall, talking to Jubilee when she suddenly collapses. Future Kitty wakes up in young Kitty`s body. She explains to her friends what has happened and what they need to do, they are skeptical at first but are then convinced. Prof. Xavier is elsewhere, he is lecturing at another university. They`ll have to find him later but now they need to stop Mystique from killing Trask. Kitty gets help from Wolverine, Storm Angel and Jubilee. Elsewhere: Trask asks for funding for his Sentinel program but is denied. A Military facility: An officer frees Blob, Pyro, Avalanche and Toad. The officer is revealed to be Mystique. Things don`t go exactly as planned, a fight breaks out but the mutants are freed. When they are safe the mutant brotherhood and Mystique go their separate ways, she still has a few things to take care of and the mutant brotherhood have had enough excitement for one day. Trask Industries: Mystique impersonates Trask, finds autopsy files on mutants that have been experimented on. This is what gives her motivation.
Act 2: Elsewhere: Mystique knocks out and takes the form of an Officer. Elsewhere: Kitty, Logan, Ororo, Warren, and Jubilee arrive outside the building where they know that Mystique is gonna try to kill Trask. Kitty sees two kids playing in a park, gets a little emotional and cherishes the fact that she`s in a time period where the sentinels haven`t taken over. It may not be the best of worlds but much better than the hellhole she`s been living in for the last ten years. Later: Bolivar Trask shows up at a meeting where he talks about his sentinels and that they will be equipped with special mutant detectors. He activates a detector and it reacts to one of the officers (Mystique in disguise). Mystique tries to kill him but is stopped by the X-Men who break in. Trask still get a bit of Mystique`s DNA. (So the sentinels in the future will still be able to shapeshift and adapt.) Mystique escapes, her actions convince the other politicians at the meeting that Trasks sentinels are necessary, The X-Men try to find her but with no luck. Two people see the events that happened on their TV: Magneto and the mutant brotherhood. Logan asks her about the future. she tells him what it`s like, living in a world controled by sentinels and we, the audience see whats going on in the dystopian future. The future: Sentinels are moving towards the hideout where Scott, Alex, Dazzler, Siryn and cannonball are dwelling. They get ready for a fight. The present: Warren and Ororo find the university where Prof. X just finished his lecturing, they take him aboard the Blackbird and fly away. Elsewhere: Magneto calls Mystique and berates her for her failed assasination attempt. It was poorly planned and because of her all mutants will now be targeted. She sends him the blueprints of the sentinels and the autopsy reports on mutants that she found at Trask industries in the hopes that he will understand. He understands. The future: The Sentinels arrive, Scott and the others fight valiantly but are unfortunately killed. Elsewhere: Rogue keeps flying through the dystopian landscape. The present: Prof. Xavier meets Kitty, listens to her, reads her memories and understands the gravity of the situation. He uses Cerebro to search for Mystique. Elsewhere: The President eventually agrees to Trask’s program and arranges an unveiling in Washington D.C., they decide to show the eight Sentinels that have already been built to the public. Trask tells them that these sentinels will be made of a special material, they will have no metal in them, so they will not be vulnerable to mutants like Magneto. A train to D.C.: With the blueprints that Mystique sent him, Magneto flies aboard the train that transports the sentinels and implants metal on them. Xavier`s mansion: Xavier has found Mystique, he can`t persuade her to abandon her plans, to do that he`d have to concentrate harder and that could hurt her, (Remember X-Men 2?) but he has found out where she`s planning to go: Washington D.C. The future: Rogue runs into Sentinels. She fights them. First they get the upperhand and it looks like they are gonna win but then Rogue gets the upperhand. She defeats them but knocks herself unconscious in the process.
Act: 3 The present, the next day: It`s the unveiling of the sentinels. Logan, Kitty, Ororo, Jubilee, Warren and Prof. Xavier are there, trying to find Mystique. Magneto arrives at the stadium and lifts it with his powers. The future, the X-Men`s hideout: Sentinels are moving towards the hideout. The remaining mutants get ready for what could be their last battle. The present: The president speaks. Sentinels are activated. Xavier finds Mystique, disguised as a secret agent, tries to convince her to abandon her plans, she is stubbornand refuses, Xavier shows her Kitty`s memories of the dystopian future. Sentinels sense the presence of mutants and go into attack mode. Magneto drops the stadium so that the white house is surrounded. Since he controls them, the sentinels don`t attack Magneto. The future: The sentinels attack the mutants who fight hard but one by one, they are killed. Storm, Bishop, Colossus, Warpath, Sunspot, Iceman, Blink and Wolverine are killed. The secret service try to protect the president and Trask and put them in a safe room. Mystique, still in the guise of a secret agent, is also pulled into it. Trask discovers Mystique is in the safe room, Magneto pulls it out of the White House. Mystique takes the form of the president, tries to talk to Magneto. The future: The sentinels are outside of the room where Kitty is. Forge opens his robotic leg and pulls out a big, hi-tech rifle. The present: Logan attacks Magneto, who stops him, Mystique uses the distraction to shoot Magneto and wound him, beats him up and takes off his helmet. Mystique aims her gun at Trask. The future: Forge fires his gun at the sentinels. The sentinel is about to kill him but Rogue shows up and destroys the sentinel. A second sentinel shows up and fights her, a third sentinel shows up and kills Forge. Rogue breaks free from the second sentinel and flies fast towards the third who gets ready to kill Kitty. The present: Mystique can`t kill Trask. She runs away. The future: The sentinels disappear. Everything disappears. The present: Kitty faints, Xavier wakes Magneto up and lets him fly away. A helicopter shows up to pick up Mystique, it is piloted by the mutant brotherhood. She saved them, they save her. Later, Xavier`s mansion: Kitty wakes up. Jubilee hugs her. She has no idea what has happened, Xavier assures her that he will tell her all that has happened. On the news Trask is arrested for selling military secrets. A new mutant arrives at the front door, a young, native american man named Forge. In the recreational room Rogue is listening to Alison Blair (Dazzler), play the piano. Scott and Ororo are mentoring the newest mutants, Logan and Remy are enjoying a beer outside.
The End
Mid-credit scene: Somewhere in Egypt. A cult is gathered outside a tomb. They are chanting "En Sabah Nur! En Sabah Nur! En Sabah Nur!" The tomb is opening.
(And no, we don`t get to see what happens in the altered future in my version because here, the future is not yet written.)
And that`s how I would do it. Not great but hopefully not bad.
Yeah, like I said. The movie was good, so I kept a lot of ideas and the basic story beats in my version. I left out Pietro and his "Time in a bottle" scene because I just couldn`t figure out how to fit it into my version. On the plus side, I found a way to put in a superpowered, flying Rogue into the story, so there is always that. I also put Jubilee in this beacuse She`s been an important character in the comics so it is about time she gets something to do in the movies. --------------------------------------- Written stuff: 43

On today’s episode of Scotty talks XMCU.
The disaster train that is Dark Phoenix and things I actually do like about it versus things that absolutely STINK about it. And because I like to end with the good things, I’ll just kick off with the bad things.
*cracks knuckles* I don’t like Raven being team leader, if anything that one should be on Hank aka the only one who’s been 100% X-Man since day one (aka First Class). To me it just feels like there’s no one at that house Charles maybe trusts more than Hank. Speaking of Charles. I don’t like him all that much in this one. On another note concerning Raven, what was the make up department thinking? And while we’re on bad character designs: Hank’s Beast look, and Scott’s visor both don’t do it for me. Snorry-borry. *coughs* All of them are too young to be going on that space mission, but can we honestly talk shit about this because the O5 were basically kids too when the X-Men were created. This just felt way over their heads and I’m forever angry that Charles actually sent them into space, and Hank agreed ??? As someone who writes Hank on another blog, that’s always been an annoyance for me.
SPEAKING OF HANK, PLEASE STOP PARKING THE X-JET IN DOMESTIC LITTLE NEIGHBORHOODS OR BUMFUCK CENTRE OF NEW YORK ???
Did I mention white hair doesn’t work on Jessica Chastain and that I don’t vibe with her in this one? And that it’s weird that Vux gets to knock out Scott with his own optic blast? Like ??? :) Anyway, not really a fan of kids teaching kids at the end of the movie. Like, it’s obvious Storm and the others on the current team are somewhere in their twenties, which is weirdly young to be teaching people who could be in their late teens.
Oh...yeah, I’m supposed to end with the good stuff so...
Scott gets to show off his powers more creatively, like using reflection to direct his blast rather than always having it go straight ahead. I love that they actually went with the idea to adapt the X-Jet to the team’s abilities, leaving Scott the opportunity to use his blasts while on board through a built in gun/blaster modified to fit his optic blasts. Hank’s reluctance at the start of the movie to head into space is just chef’s kiss. It’s proof that he’s one of the few people inside that house who still got his shit straight since the 60s (he aged very well too in those 30 years). RAVEN ROASTING CHARLES IN THE X-WOMEN SCENE. The tiny Dazzler cameo, pleeeeeaaaase!
Sophie Turner SERVES as Jean and so many of the jeanscott scenes just make me feel some type of way. The way she and Tye deliver that scene where she leaves the mansion? Good food. It took me forever to get used to Tye as Scott, but the more I rewatch his material and pay closer attention to him, the more I can see there’s this fine build up from a young Scott, towards one who knows his responsibilities and knows how to be mature at the right time. He’s a really fine step towards James Marsden (and they also look freakishly alike in a way). SCOTT SUMMERS SUCKS WITH HIS FEELINGS.
The kitchen scene between Hank and Charles is my personal highlight out of the entire movie. It just tears out my heart. Erik’s first appearance is so good, too. He’s actually amazing throughout the whole movie and I like him better than Charles. His reunion with Hank to go after Jean together is such a solid point in Hank’s character development, as is the moment where Scott talks over Charles when they decide who gets to go after Jean in New York. Scott’s friendship with Ororo is so nice to see, and really resonates with how it showed pre-established in the 00s trilogy. It also resonates with the comics, and I just LOVE IT.
IF YOU TOUCH HER I’LL FUCKING KILL YOU.
Hank vs. Scott always gets me because it’s just... :’) they know each other. Hank knows Scott’s weaknesses, he’s been his mentor within the X-Men and his teacher around the school. Erik being so extra, he pulls a metro out of the street really resonates with how extra he always was in those really old comics and it amuses me somehow.
We didn’t get Scott yelling JEEAAAN once, but twice. I’d let him yeet me the same way he did to Vux, and probably thank him for it too. Anyway, let’s keep it PG-rated and mention the classic: the train scene is a whole feast. Hank letting loose the Beast, his fighting style with the acrobatics and pure Beastly force, the powerful grace of Storm using her powers on the roof of the train...
Kurt Wagner’s screen time and character development is the attention he deserves and I’m glad it didn’t go to Quicksilver again. I’m tired of him anyway.
Scott sticking by Charles’ side all the time just has me emotional. It’s definitely not a relationship as strong as the one they have in the comics (where I’m reading right now), but it reminds me of it and it may also be a build-up to how close they were in the 00s movies. And I dig all these little pieces of continuity despite the timeline already being a big enough mess as it is.
Jean being a total badass until the bitter end? Sign me up.
And finally, let me be soft about my boy Hank being head of the school. It fits his character and the future he has ahead of himself. Even if he doesn’t stick there, it’s a good build-up towards that politics career we know him for.

Whirlwind Part II - Bora
Tumblr media
DAY 2
Echoes are bouncing within the sturdy walls of the San Diego Marine Corps Air Station's main hangar. Blackshoes are in the middle of pre-flight logistics runs and equipment set-up before the launch of Top Gun program's first training mission. Aircrafts are being carefully escorted outside towards the runway, the sound of their roaring turbines whelming Harry's ears but he doesn't let that disturb his self-reflecting musings. His body is leant on the metallic hinges of the warehouse's entrance as his absentminded gaze doesn't shift from the take-off runway.
He is about an hour early but the upcoming events of the day have had him on edge since he reluctantly draped the cool bedsheets off his body that morning. How could he possibly get a wink of sleep knowing he was, at last, going back amongst the clouds for the first time since the accident? For the first time without his best friend. For the first time without is partner by his side (or rather behind him) watching out for hidden threats and targets in line. Jonathan had always had his back but from this day forward Harry would have to rely on Aella to keep them both safe.
He doesn't know what to make of that, what to make of her. There is no questioning her skills and capability, one could never join this program without those...but two highly proficient flyers don't necessarily equal one flawless unit. Especially since they know so little of each other. Be that as it may, the fellowship that binds two pilots flying the same aircraft is indispensable to their success and in those life-of-deaths seconds, when it feels like the sky is closing in on them and the next move can make or break them, it all comes down to one thing: the entrustment between him and her.
And he wants to. Wants to take his trust out from the jetted pocket of his uniform, lay it on the palm of her hand and enclose her fingers around it to keep secure. But it doesn't work like that, does it? Trust is not so much a choice as it is a spontaneous feeling immune to rational thinking. And for a reason he doesn't want to mull over too much, Harry can't help but feel wary of her in a way. He's seen her fire; the night before last when she made a fool out of their most redoubtable opponent. Recognized the same flame that used to inhabit his best friend's eyes and make him the warmest being Harry ever got to be around. It doesn't sway him as much as it scares him. Fierceness is a good trait in the Navy world, but too much of it can be deceitful. Harry experienced it first-hand.
He doesn't dwell on it too much for now though, and makes his way to the back of the warehouse where his "classmates" have started to huddle while waiting for the superiors. Most of the promotion is there, the usual inner-groups appearing clearly to Harry as his eyes takes in the scene: herdsman Rex and his sheeps on one side while the other crews enjoy one last round of banter before their sternness is summoned for the first mission of the program.
Harry takes note of Aella's absence just as someone calls out to him. "Styles!" It's his callsign tumbling out of Dean Marshall's mouth. Harry used to have another, but the only person who was allowed to make use of that one special letter, is no longer able to claim it.
Dean and his partner Emmet Iggersman - or as they are commonly addressed to on base, Dazzler and Tigger - complete the other half of Harry and Aella's team. The four of them fly in tandem to form a section and hopefully fulfill the missions' objectives before the others do. Harry has flown many a time with these two guys and he's glad he'll be able to count on them as well should his new pairing go south.
"Hey Daz, how's it goin' ?" his greeting is followed by a good-natured handshake.
"S' goin' awesome, thanks for asking! My boy just started walking like a penguin on steroids right before I left. I swear the little champ is takin' the helm to keep his mum on her toes while his father's gone!" The proud smirk teasing Dazzler's lips triggers a contagious chuckle from his peers as they all take in the sheer bliss coloring the new-dad's face.
"That's grand man! Send my prayers to Catherine, sounds like she might need it, yeah?"
"Will do Styles, but enough 'bout me, how are you holdin' up? I can't deal fo' you man, what with Fox gone and this new partner thing..." There's a painful tug at Harry's chest at the utterance of Jonathan's callsign, the nickname born from his tangerine-like hair though Harry always believed it was more reference to his best-friend incredibly cunning mind. He ignores it in favor of a more tempered and diplomatic answer than what his heart was crying out.
"It'll be an adjustment fo' sure, yeah. But overall I'm just glad to be back in the game"
"As we all are Styl-" Tigger has just placed a comforting hand on Harry's broad shoulder when he is interrupted by none other than Rex's disdainful voice.
"Hey girls! How's the BFFs reunion going?"
Dazzler doesn't hesitate before stepping forward and firing back "Just about a punch away from properly kickin'off. Why? are you offerin'?"
"Wooo I'm shaking" Rex replies with a fake tremor. Then he seems to spot something - or rather someone - coming up behind Harry and Tigger. It's Aella, head kept down as to not attract any attention. She's seen the despicable man interacting with her new crew so she tries to reach the makeshift classroom (mostly just chairs aligned in a couple of rows in the middle of a hangar) as inconspicuously as possible. The déjà-vu impression is not lost on her.
"There she is!" Aella tilts her head up, knowing she's busted. "Miss James Bond Girl in the flesh! C'mere sweetheart, come show these suckers who wears the pants in this team!" The disdain within her levels up a notch (as if possible) but Aella doesn't know what she hates the most about this nonsense. The fact he is ridiculing her once again or the fact he acts like none of the after James-Bond-Girl-debacle two nights ago ever happened. As if she didn't put him in his place like the badass she is.
Or maybe it's the affectionate pet-name coming out of his repugnant lips and directed to her... Anyway, she doesn't have the time to prepare a comeback before a second round is launched, this time at her new partner.
"Better watch it Styles! Next thing you know you'll be the one in the freakin' kitchen..."
"Cut it out, Rex-" Harry starts defending his team but a stern and humorless voice overpowers his.
"I don't reckon anyone asked for your moronic opinions. So please pack your ignorant bullshit away and leave us the fuck alone" She keeps her countenance as she tells him off but Rex is not budging an inch and neither is the insolent smirk hung on his face.
"Damn Harry, quite the mouthy one you have here. Sure you can handle her?"
"For Christ's sake, please shut the hell up and go back where you came from Rex or by God I swear I won't hesitate to have you weep on the floor for your momma like a baby, again."
"Again?" Dazzler perks up with a smiling frown just as Rex's smugness fades away to be replaced by unadulterated contempt.
"You're delusional if you think I can be scared of you Lonethorne" he spats out while backing away, head up mighty high. "Stupid cunts" he adds under his breath as he turns around to rejoin his buddies.
Aella knows she's worked herself up but she can't help but call out to him one more time. "Oh and Rex?... How's the hand doing?" He doesn't give her the curtesy of a respond but Aella is satisfied with the flare of his nose and the twitch in his eye.
Meanwhile the three men still at her sides are left speechless, Dazzler and Tigger still processing the heated exchange while Harry seems lost in his own thoughts.
She'd done it again. Let the fire out and turned Rex's crudeness into ashes before they could scar her skin. There was no attempt of taming the beast before she went in guns blazing. That didn't help assuage his worries one bit. She's too impulsive is playing in his head over and over like a broken record. Because while Harry agrees Rex is the worst kinds of knobheads, he's always believed responding to antagonization was pointless. Better to look the other way and let the jerk waste his energy on petty words that will never reach aim. And because all in all, there are dogfighters, but that endeavor is reserved in the air, not on land.
"My my, darling. You just pimped the shit out of the least pimpable man on base. I think I'm in awe." Dazzler says after regaining his senses.
"Please don't call me darling" Aella retorts softly as she knows he doesn't mean it in any condescending way.
"Sorry. Aella, is it?"
"Yeah, that's me. And you are...?"
"Dazzler, so very nice to meet you" he smiles widely accepting her handshake offer. "And just a heads-up dear Aella. After you tell me all about weeping Rex, you and I are gonna be besties, I can feel it" She chuckles lightly as his enthusiasm and decides she'll not only welcome his affection but also return it. Before she can reciprocate the sentiment however, the room falls suddenly quiet and a second later the reason, or rather 4 reasons, come into her view: Commander Berks, Lieutenant Rogers and two other officers that have yet to be introduced.
"Morning everyone, I can tell some of you over-indulged in Induction Rave. If you could put the same amount of devotion you put at getting faced into your training, I would be eternally grateful." Berks earns himself a full house of laughters, before compelling the room back to sobriety. "Time to be serious now. ACM training was not invented to entertain you and make you look pretty up there. As an era where the potential of confrontation is constantly rising, air combat excellence is now more than ever a vital technique to the protection of our country. And don't you forget that: you are above all defenders of the nation. Not heroes, not athletes. I say again: protectors. Best be at you sharpest then." The Commander pauses after his inspiring tirade.
"Now, let's talk about this first assignment. Just plain good old-fashioned dogfighting to give you guys a foretaste of what's coming. Today it's gonna be 4 units at a time against 4 of ours. Your goal is to target any one of the instructors' units while trying not to be shot yourself. I'll say it now, we won't go easy on you. This exercise is meant as an assessment of your current skills, so don't get too cocky up there, just do your ex-Commanders honor. First one to reach its target or last one to be shot wins the mission. Remember, there is no points for second place in this program." He pauses and starts grinning. "Show me what you got."
With that Aella tries a small glance in Harry's direction but his eyes are fixed towards the horizon with a permanent frown shrouding their luminescence. She sighs.
Tumblr media
Fully equipped of her G-suit, helmet and headset, Aella is making the last adjustments on her seat at the back of the cockpit. She's not unfamiliar with the radar intercept officer position though she's usually the one at the commands. She's also used to flying alone.
The panel in front of her intimidatingly takes up all her front view with a couple of screens and numerous switches and tuners. Her perspective is limited to a peripheral vision on both sides of the cockpit but she wouldn't be relying on a full panorama to spot target and threats anyway. No her job is to accurately keep tract of all flying elements within the largest range and most anticipated time possible. There's no point in crying out for enemy presence when they're already at your six and firing away... Along with relaying their position to Harry, Aella can also suggest tactical maneuvers based on the predictions she draws from the opponents' moves.
Speaking of Harry, they haven't exchanged a word since their brief introduction two days ago. Now they're both tightly harnessed to their seat about to navigate a near-thirty-tons engine beyond the speed of sound. Aella's never been a religious one but as the technician gives her one last thumb up to signal their operational status, she's praying to all deities that the awkwardness between them on land is nothing but the result of a subliminal force destined to counterbalance their incredible chemistry in the air.
The canopy of the cockpit locks them into silence before Harry speaks up. "All good?" The mediocre quality of the microphone's transducer makes his voice even raspier than usual through the headset tucked over Aella's ears.
"Yeah all good. You?"
"Same."
She thinks their conversation is over but then she hears a hushed voice. "Let's kick the tires and light the fires." She figures it was more so for his own benefit though, so she doesn't comment.
All too soon they're propelled forward, backs pinned to their seats because of the tremendous speed pressure. It can be a small-scale body trauma for some but Aella has never felt more comfortable. A tingle of the fingertips later, they are welcomed in an infinite azure dotted by a few scarce clouds, the runway long gone behind them. Both pilots enjoy a couple peaceful seconds to take in their new panorama and then they snap: it begins.
"I've got a six strobe. I think he's locked on us." Aella starts reading out the incoming movements entering her radar scope.
With a switch on his radio transmitter, Harry reaches out to Dazzler and Tigger as they are flying in a parallel tandem alongside them. "Tigger, you spot it?"
"Positive. It's Rogers, looks like he's a single." Tigger who endorses the same role as Aella quickly reports, before she pitches back in for a few more precisions.
"Contact at 900 knots closure. He's gaining speed."
"Daz, it's split time." Harry announces.
"Copy that Styles."
After Dazzler's approval, the two aircrafts are both sharply veering outwards in a defensive split, leaving a Y-shaped trail of smoke after them. The move comes through as the chaser is contrived to choose one direction to follow, but to Harry's dismay they get the short end of the stick.
"Rogers coming left, eight o'clock high." Aella signals immediately.
The scenery below them is a mix of wild purples and pale magentas, with fields-worth of lavender adorning the dry soil so characteristic of Californian lands. Peace and nature prevail on these grounds slightly remote from the bustling life of the city but the same cannot be said ten-thousand feet above where Harry is caught in a tedious game of zig-zag trying to escape his pursuer.
"He's tailing us. Watch your six!" her pulse quickens every time Rogers' unit manages to lock its position right behind them. There is no more vulnerable position for a pilot than to have an enemy flying at their six. It usually means incoming fire. It's why Harry is relentlessly jerking the TomCat in a rapid and unpredictable manner, the constant change in direction making it near-impossible for Rogers to lock, aim and shoot them.
"No shit Sherlock, why d'you think I'm jinxing so much?" Harry is starting to see spots on his peripheral vision from the gravitational pull, and he can only hope his tailgater is experiencing the same. Beads of sweat dotting his hairline and starting to dribble along his temples but it doesn't put a damper on his concentration. He can't relent or he becomes an exposed target.
"Goddamn, he's not budgin.'" Harry tries with all his might to leave his frustration out of the cockpit but the situation is not looking up.
"You got new contact ahead, 2 o'clock." Aella perks up at the discovery.
"Imma bit preoccupied with Rogers up my ass, if you haven't noticed." She should have known pointing out a potential target while they were heavily pursued themselves was not what Harry wanted to hear, but she already had a plan all mapped out. That's what Aella is best at after-all: reading a situation and coming up with a strategy in .2 second flat, no reflexion needed, just the numbers, the physics and the sky on her side.
"I didn't mean it as a target. You can use them as a shield if you keep Rogers high enough right before making a dive under them." She explains her vision to him, desperately wishing she could be the one on the front executing it.
"He'll just go above and back to tailgating us."
"Not if you barrel-roll right after the contact, he'll just overshoot." His lack of response betrays his skepticism so she insists further, brushing off the way he's second-guessing her.
"At the least, it'll give you leeway and buy you some time." This time her argument weights enough to tip his scale in favor of her plan.
"'lright then." Harry reluctantly agrees, tilting his chin slightly to the side as if he couldn't believe himself he was going through with her move. "'s gonna be snug timing."
"Just trust my cue." Aella's words are left hanging between them like a desperate echo thrown in an empty ravine. Does he trust her? Does she? It's definitely not the moment to reflect on it, much less have a discussion about it, but neither of them are oblivious to the eerie silence filling up their space like a faux smile greeting a bad joke. Then the aircraft is once again yanked to a blunt left and Aella is snapped out of it.
"That's it. Target at 1 mile abeam 40° on your right." She's got the fellow fighter in her line of view, both on the radar and through the bulletproof glass of the cockpit's canopy. "Keep high, keep high...3, 2, 1, drop!" Harry immediately complies, the aircraft nearly skimming the underbelly of its twin above, before shooting right back upwards, nose pointing at the sun. The trajectory describes a half loop leaving them upside-down for a milli second before Harry rolls them back to normal, in the end effectively realizing a vertical U-turn. Rogers skillfully avoids a fetal collision with the third wheeler but doesn't anticipate Harry's sudden volte-face, in accordance with Aella's prognosis.
"Fuck, we're losin' airspeed." Because of such a twist of direction, they are indeed relegated to a lesser speed which Harry is not too enchanted about.
"He's losing some too." Aella reasons, before jumping to another matter. "2 incoming bogies ahead. I think it's Berks tailing Dazzler." She's barely finished her sentence that two familiar aircrafts flash passed them at such high speed, Harry has to crane his neck backwards to watch his friends in the same predicament he was mere seconds ago.
"I have to cover them." His instinct takes over.
"Fly your needles Harry, it's too late for them." Aella objects to it straight away. Her mind is unbiased, she knows going for them would be pointless.
"Like hell I'm gonna sit tight, they need cover." Harry's voice is categoric like he couldn't ever fathom a world where he would leave his friends stranded for the sake of a mission.
"They already lost, Berks' gonna turn for us now."
"You don't know that." He replies adamantly despite her warning.
"Except I do. Daz was loosing speed, it's over for them." Now she's the one trying to stifle her frustration with all her might. She just wishes he would listen, but instead they're doing yet another 180 to follow Dazzler's trail to the rescue. She has no choice but to adapt and keep calling the positions.
"Contact ahead, four hundred, coming down. He's gonna turn."
"Not if I nail 'im first." If she weren't so bitter about being ignored, she might find his determination admirable. Admittedly she can't deny Harry is an amazing pilot, as are proof his excellent accuracy in space and timing as well as the ease with which he performs each maneuver. But alas, the git won't take her words for it, no matter how knowledgable she is. Talk about eyes rolling...
Meanwhile, Harry is desperately trying to aim for the TomCat launched in his direction, but his opponent is using the same tricks he used against Rogers.
"Shit, 's not stable enough to fire." Aella can't believe he has to audacity to groan about it to her. DIdn't she warn him?
Any shot is missed as the two aircrafts cross trajectories, nearly grazing each other
"Don't lag, he's gonna come around high at your five." Instead of commenting on his failed attempt, she communicates her best educated guess.
"How'dya figure?"
"Cause he was lagging too." Her retorts are getting sharper and drier as her annoyance grows the more he questions her. Her eyes take a rest from the screens on her panel to lay on the Californian landscape flowing passed them. They've wandered quite the distance away from the base, the relatively greener scenery of the seafront giving way to a craggy turf redder and drier by the meter.
"Fuck." Harry suddenly swears, the quality of his voice could rival the roughness of the ground Aella was just observing, and she's effectively brought back into focus.
"Damn it, I told you!" She indulges with an expletive of her own once she spots the fast-approaching signal of Berks unit on her AMDR (Air and Missile Defense Radar).
"The fucker got in my blind spot, I'm doin' my best." Harry is quick to defend himself but the damage is done: they're being chased down once again.
Aella thinks she's starting to reach her disgruntlement threshold. The fact Harry isn't much receptive to her ideas doesn't alleviate her growing frustration at her lack of control over the damn carrier. "Well step up before we get wiped." She spits.
"I swear to God Aella, now's really not the time"
"If you just listened to me for- Watch out! At your six, closing fast!" She desperately wants to tell him off. Wishes she could go on a rant about how much of a dismissing jerk is being, but her duties reins her in when a loud signal starts beeping frantically on her board. Berks is locked at their six, a press of a finger away from shooting them.
"I hear that" Harry grunts as he gives a sharp jerk at the control stick in order to dodge Berks' line of fire. He keeps jinxing the aircraft in all axis but Berks follows suit and matches all his moves.
"He's too fast, I can't get out of his fire range." Harry's heartbeat skyrockets as the situation becomes more dire by the second. He doesn't know how long he can maintain the zig-zagging going, for the sake of both his energy and the carrier's. Abrupt moves are what's currently keeping them safe but these are sadly the greediest in kerosene.
Then all hell breaks loose when Aella is hit by one of her craziest ideas.
"Try a complete thrust reversal of the turbofan engines."
"' the fuck?! Are you nuts?! It'll send us spiraling." Harry's livid. He knew it. He fucking knew she was impulsive and reckless on the edges. She held to much fire in her hands for him to put his trust in them like he wanted to.
"Precisely." His harsh reaction doesn't deter her confidence. "If you're out of control, he can't anticipate your moves, can he?"
"Are you even listening to yourself? That's a stupid idea if I ever heard one."
"It's not. You just have to switch back off the burners for a sec and you'll get the control back."
"And what if I don't?" She knows her calculations are foolproof but Harry won't have any of it. He can't think past the boldness and near-arrogance of it all.
"You will, just trust me." Once again, the words leave a bitter taste in her mouth, even more so because she knows he won't likely follow through with it.
"That's suicide mission Aella. I'm not doing it, that's final." The last two words are categorical, a way for him to officially close the conversation.
"Damn it!"
The theory of it was beautiful really, but Harry thinks in practical and surefire moves he knows won't send him six feet under before his time. Aella, on the other hand, has always relied on her infallible knowledge of astrophysics to enhance her flying experience. She's followed the same motto ever since she stumbled across a quote that inspired her beyond grasp. It goes something like "aviation records don't fall until someone is willing to mortgage the present for the future." And while she would never even entertain the idea of a reckless and immature move, her self-taught philosophy gave her access to a whole world of potential tricks most pilot couldn't even conceptualize.
Aella is in the middle of an attempt at regulating her breathing when she starts noticing the spinning arrow on her altimeter. Her head swiftly tilts to the side to get a brief snapshot of the crimson soil of San Diego's wasteland. They must be pretty far in the land if the upcoming sierra of rocky mounts is anything to go by. That's not what is retaining Aella's attention. No, she's more puzzled by the lack of space between her and the ground, the carrier grazing over pebbly elevations and lorn cactuses.
"Flathatting? That's your idea? Christ Harry, the trees won't save your ass." She figures if he doesn't bother being civil then she should drop her filter too.
"Leave it Aella. Just do your job."
"I'm trying!" She fires back.
"Just trust me on this."
Blank.
"Fuck you Harry, that's a two-way street." She's actually fuming. He had the balls to call her out on trust when he hasn't been returning the same courtesy. If she had the time to worry further about it now, Aella would be questioning if coming to Top Gun and partnering with Harry was really a life-changing opportunity. So far, she's had very few upgrades from the grim world she's been privy too.
"There's a split trail 3 miles ahead on the left." She was under the impression they'd stop talking in tacit consent but the rasp of Harry's voice through her headphones is no mirage. "I can lose him there. Can you read the positions please?"
She's tempted to give him the silent treatment but the fervid pilot in her wouldn't let her jeopardize a mission on such petty grounds. At least he was polite about his request this time. "He's closing on 300, nose up. Going by 800 knots."
"Roger that" Probably the closest thing to a thank you she'll get from him.
They're currently speeding through a gorge, tall cliffs of maroon stone fencing them on either side. Aella starts to question Harry's move as it restrains their room for maneuver but then he makes an extremely obtuse left turn and she gets it. The intimidating mount on their left actually split into two narrow canyons. At the speed they were going, one is most likely to take the second channel whose angle isn't as sharp as the one Harry chose. Only someone with previous knowledge of the surroundings would know how to successfully make that turn. It's then Aella realizes Harry has more insight on the environs than he lets on. His trick proves to be conclusive as Berks falls into the trap and enters the other passage.
"He's out."Aella simply confirms, before Harry veers upwards and back towards the base.
"Hunky-Dory." He utters in the same whispered manner he used before their take-off. "Now let's bug the fuck outta here."
Tumblr media
The moment she has her two feet on the tarmac, Aella is scurrying over to a furious-looking Harry. Nostrils flaring, daggers in the eyes, they're both squaring their shoulders once nose to nose, or rather nose to collarbone. She doesn't give him the time to even part his lips before she's jabbing her pointer finger at his taunt chest.
"You prick! I got better things to do than to fill some empty space at the back of your stupid plane. If you don't want my insight you can shove it where the sun doesn't shine."
"Insight? You call that insight?!" He starts laughing jeeringly. "'s fuckin' madness is what it was. I can't believe I passed the mission with someone like you!" Harry doesn't even care to temper his disdain anymore. He's seen enough to make up his mind about her. He doesn't like her. Doesn't want to find out about the person inside because he doesn't like the pilot that she is. It reminds him to much of futile losses and irreparable hurt.
"Someone like me?" Aella's face turns sour and if it didn't make her look so sentimental, her eyes would be hosting a few pearls. She really thought he wasn't like those sexist jerks back home. Maybe not the warmest but at least respectful of her talent enough to appreciate her place in the Navy. Now she hates herself for entertaining the fantasy of ever having an ally flying by her side. "You're an asshole Harry, and certainly no better than Rex." Then before he can reply she storms off, too angered not to lose her wits.
And really, her last words don't sit well with Harry, because he knows she's not referring to the jerk's flying skills.

Dark Phoenix Movie Summary, Spoilers Ahead!
I got to see Dark Phoenix today so I decided to give you all a summary of the movie! Overall it was a very grounded and focused film that follows the struggle that Jean goes through after coming into contact with a powerful force and the ensuing conflict between the members of the X-Men on how to handle the situation. Keep on reading for my in depth spoiler filled movie summary!
Summary:
Dark Phoenix opens with Jean as a young girl traveling with her parents as her powers begin to manifest, an accident occurs because of this and Jean’s mother is killed. We are led to believe that Jean’s father also died but we later find out that he is in fact alive and no longer wanted anything to do with Jean after the death of her mother so he gave her over to Charles Xavier who then raised her in the X-Mansion. After all the trauma caused by the accident and the fact that her father gave her away, Charles decides to put up walls in Jean’s mind to “protect” her from the truth and instead tells her that her father also died.
We then flash forward into the 90′s where NASA sends a group of astronauts into space but their mission is quickly ended when they encounter what they believe to be a solar flare that damages their ship. The President himself contacts Charles Xavier, as the X-Men are now viewed as Heroes, and asks him personally if they can help. Jean at first is a bit apprehensive of this mission and notices that Mystique is as well, she asks Mystique if she is comfortable with this mission and Mystique promises that if anything goes wrong she will turn the ship around. The team boards the X-Jet and heads off to space. After saving the crew the “solar flare” begins to intensify and Mystique demands that they leave, but Charles tells them they have to stay as one more members of the NASA crew is on board. Jean and Kurt go back onto the ship to save him but when the “solar flare” hits the ship Kurt is only able to save himself and the crew member. The force enters Jean and causes the NASA ship to explode, but surprisingly Jean is saved by the force and is brought back on board via Kurt and they go home.
Back on Earth the X-Men are praised for their heroism and Charles attends a ceremony to honor himself and the X-Men. Mystique questions Charles motives as she believes he is putting the X-Men’s lives at risk for his shot at fame and glory and isn’t considering anyone else. Hank checks up on Jean and notices that her powers are beginning to grow off the charts but Jean assures him and everyone else that she feels better then okay. Jean, Scott, Kurt, Quicksilver and Storm attend a mutant party with Dazzler as the entertainment as Mystique and Hank watch from the mansion. Mystique tells Hank she doesn’t believe Charles is leading the team for the right reasons and never actually puts himself on the line but is reckless with everyone else. She tells Hank she wants to leave the X-Men and live a normal life now that mutants aren’t hated as much as they were before. Hank convinces her to stay right before they notice Jean’s power levels rising. At the party Scott tells Jean that the kids are calling her Phoenix after the mythological bird that rises from the ashes after her near death experience. Jean continuously drinks more and more and begins to lose control of the entity within herself as she notices the raging fire at the party. The noises around her begin to intensify and she lets out a shock wave of energy that throws everyone to the ground and she passes out. Charles leaves the ceremony after sensing the trouble Jean is in and returns to the mansion to try and enter Jean’s mind to see what is happening with her. With the entity now inside of Jean her powers have grown far stronger and Charles is no longer able to read her mind so he, Hank and Mystique enter Cerebro to enhance his powers. They enter Jean’s mind where Raven notices that her mind appears damaged and closed off. Charles reveals that he put up walls in Jean’s mind to protect her but with the force inside of her and her growing power the walls are beginning to break. Jean awakens and realizes her father is still alive and forcefully throws Charles out of her head upon discovering he lied to her. Jean decides to leave the mansion and find her father. Scott runs into the room after her forcing Charles out of her head to see if she is ok and Jean realizes that she hurt him at the party which only makes her want to leave more. Scott tells her that he will always stay by her side and asks her to stay. Jean puts him to sleep and leaves the mansion. After awakening, Scott informs the others that she left to find her father whom he thought was dead. Everyone begins to realize what Charles did and they quickly board the jet to find Jean.
Several alien ships arrive on Earth and split off in different directions. A get together at the home of a woman named Margaret is interrupted as her dog barks outside due to the alien ships outside. She leaves the party briefly to go investigate the reason of her dog’s barking and encounters the aliens themselves who kill her and and one impersonates her before they murder the rest of the party to impersonate them as well.
Jean arrives at her father and childhood home and knocks on the door, shocking him. He lets her inside and they awkwardly hold small talk with Jean being excited and emotional to see him after believing he was dead and her father being closed off and not very interested. He goes to get her a glass of water leaving Jean by herself to examine the pictures on the wall. As he returns the entity begins to awaken once more as Jean realizes there are no pictures of her on the wall. Her father tells her that after Jean killed her mother his life died with her and so did his love for Jean. This causes her to grow angry but the X-Men arrive catching her attention instead. Charles asks Jean to come back but she refuses now knowing that Charles lied to her. Scott attempts to convince her as well but she sticks to her decision. A squad of police cars arrive and Jean finally snaps using her power to stop the cars. The X-Men go into action but are all quickly thrown aside, with Quicksilver being badly hurt in the process. Hank attempts to take a shot at Jean with what can be presumed as a power dampening gun but Charles stops him so that Raven can attempt to calm her. Jean tells Raven to leave as the entity grows angry and she is losing control and doesn’t want to hurt anyone. Raven continues to try and calm her and tells her that she will always be by her side. Jean loses control of her rage and lets out another shock wave of energy impaling Raven into a splintered piece of wood, shocked by her own actions Jean quickly flees and Hank runs to Raven’s aid. Before dying she attempts to tell Hank that she loves him. The X-Men hold a funeral for Raven and their struggle on how to handle Jean begins. Scott and Charles want to save her, but Hank wants to stop her with any means necessary. Storm is apprehensive and believes that Jean is gone.
Jessica Chastain’s character named Vuk, impersonating Margaret, regroups with the other aliens and we discover they are what remains of the alien race D'Bari who have come to Earth in search of the cosmic entity to use it in hopes of saving their race and taking over residence on the Earth. Another member reveals to her that they have tracked the entity and that it is now located inside of a mutant girl.
Jean arrives on Genosha in hopes that Magneto can help her control her urge to kill and cause destruction. He attempts to learn who’s blood is on her shirt but she avoids the question and continues to explain that her powers are growing and she can’t control them. Magneto attempts to make Jean angry to see what happens when she is filled with rage but his attempts are put on hold when a group of military soldiers arrive in search of Jean. Eric tries to get them to leave and hide Jean from them but she makes her presence known as the entity takes over again and she attempts to kill all the soldiers and destroy their helicopters. Eric is able to hold the chopper back long enough for the soldiers to board and escape. Eric then demands Jean leave and tells her while Genosha is a safe haven for mutants he doesn’t want someone like Jean there to bring harm to anyone. After Jean leaves Hank arrives and tells Eric about the death of Raven and they both agree that they have to kill Jean.
Vuk locates Jean and after convincing Jean to trust her she takes her back to the D’Bari safe house where she shows Jean the true nature of the cosmic entity within her telling her that it was the spark that created the universe and that it destroyed her home planet. The D’Bari followed the entity and witnessed it entering Jean and now want to help Jean control the power so that she can evolve beyond her human life and become something more, something that can create life itself. Jean agrees to help Vuk and to finally let go of trying to control the entity. Charles, Storm, Kurt and Scott arrive at the safe house at the same time as Magneto, Hank, Selene and Red Lotus. A fight ensues over how to handle Jean and they wreck havoc in the streets of New York. Eric raises a subway car in the street to wall himself off from the X-Men and enters the building to kill Jean. Jean holds his power off and uses his helmet to injure him before throwing him through the building. Charles and Kurt manage to get inside the building and try to calm Jean down, but she is unwilling to back down. Jean then forces Charles to walk upstairs so she can confront him face to face. A scene slightly reminiscent of the scene from The Last Stand occurs where Jean holds Charles in the air and begins to suck the life out of him. Jean enters Charles mind and slowly gains back control as she realizes that Charles truly does care about her and wants to help her. Now back in control Jean tells Vuk to take the entity out of her if she wants it so bad. They embrace and Vuk begins to suck the entity out of Jean and in the process she reveals her plans to Charles of wanting to destroy humanity and rebuild hero own race on Earth. Charles then attempts to get Jean to break contact with Vuk but she is unable until Scott blasts Vuk off of her. Before they are able to escape the military arrive and capture the X-Men and Magneto and his forces.
Now on a train heading to a mutant detainment camp Charles apologizes to Hank for how he treated Jean and the rest of the X-Men and says that he was the villain in all of this, but that he stands by his beliefs that Jean is being controlled and that they have to save her before Vuk consumes the entity within her. Magneto, Hank and the others agree to help save Jean and stop the D’Bari from gaining the entity. The train is then attack by the D’Bari and most of the soldiers are killed before one of them sets the mutants free to aid in the fight. An epic train battle ensues as Charles and Scott attempt to wake Jean. Inside Charles head he converses with Jean who forgives him for hurting and lying to her and she realizes that she has to protect her family. Vuk arrives now wielding a small portion of the entity and quickly stops the mutants in her way before reaching Jean. Jean awakens and throws Vuk out of the train derailing the train the process in an attempt to stop the D’Bari and save the X-Men and Magneto.
Now on the ground Jean and the entity work together to disintegrate the remaining members of the D’Bari, though one of them gains the upper hand and impales Jean with a weapon injuring and stopping her briefly before the entity heals her and kills the alien. Vuk makes her grand entrance and enters and showdown with Jean as the two are surrounded by the cosmic force as Jean makes an attempt to overwhelm her with the force. Jean begins to gain the upper hand but realizes that she can’t fully control the cosmic entity and is hurting Scott in the process with the power. Vuk tells Jean that her emotions make her weak, but Jean disagrees and believes they make her strong. Jean silently bids farewell and she takes herself and Vuk into space as her and the entity finally converge into one transforming Jean into a flaming cosmic presence and exploding into a force with the appearance of a bird and killing Vuk.
In the end Charles leaves the X-Men and gives over leadership to Hank. The school is renamed the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning and we learn that Jean is now one with the cosmic entity and is still alive out in space, having evolved beyond her former self.

THE DARK PHOENIX SAGA UNCANNY X-MEN #129-138 JANUARY - OCTOBER 1980 BY CHRIS CLAREMONT, JOHN BYRNE, TERRY AUSTIN, BOB SHAREN AND GLYNIS WEIN
SYNOPSIS (FROM MARVEL DATABASE)
Following their battle against Proteus, the X-Men are getting ready to return to the United States from Muir Island. As they depart, Banshee decides to stay behind as he can no longer use his powers. When Cyclops offers Madrox, Havok and Polaris to join the X-Men, each respectfully refuses and the X-Men leave. As they jet through the air, they are unaware that not far behind them a private jet owned by the Hellfire Club, Jason Wyngard is once more using his powers to access the mind of Phoenix, in his continued bid to make her fall in love with him. Wyngarde makes Jean believe that she is reliving the life of her ancestor aboard a ship headed to America and that Wyngarde's ancestor is her lover. She snaps out of this supposed "time slip" when Scott asks her if she is okay. The two begin talking about their relationship and Cyclops assures her that his brief "romance" with Colleen Wing when he thought Jean was dead was only friendly. The two confess their love for each other and share a kiss.
Tumblr media
As they approach the X-Mansion, they are alerted that security on has been breached. Storming their home, the X-Men are surprised to find that their mentor, Charles Xavier, has returned to Earth. Over the next few days, Scott and Jean spend a lot of time catching up. When Wolverine suddenly storms out of the Danger Room, Scott has to explain to the Professor that this team of X-Men operates differently than his original students. Before an argument can burst out, Cerebro detects two new mutants who's powers have manifested, one in Chicago and the other in New York. As the Professor mobilizes the X-Men to investigate the two new mutants, they are unaware that they are being spied on by the Inner Circle of the Hellfire Club. The leaders of the Hellfire Club seek to obtain these mutants before the X-Men, and send their agent the White Queen to deal with the one in Chicago while Jason Wyngarde goes to deal with the one in New York.

In the suburb of Deerfield, young Katherine "Kitty" Pryde is returning home from her ballet practice, bothered by the series of headaches that she has been experiencing recently. When she arrives home she finds her parents discussing sending Kitty to a private school in Massachusetts with it's headmistress Ms. Emma Frost, the White Queen in her civilian guise. Kitty doesn't much like Miss Frost, and realizes that the fact that she is being sent off to private school means that her parents are serious about splitting up. As she goes up into her room to rest, another headache hits her and when she opens her eyes after the pain subsides, she finds herself strangely on the floor of the living room. She rushes back up to her room as her parents are seeing Ms. Frost out, and welcomes their next visitor: Charles Xavier, who seeks to get Kitty to come to his School for Gifted Youngsters. Kitty spies Xavier and his students, Logan, Peter and ororo and finds that they are much more interesting.
Tumblr media
Kitty is asked to take Xavier's friends out, and she brings them to the local malt shop where Kitty makes instant friends with Ororo. Ororo reveals to her that they are really the mutant heroes known as the X-Men, much to Kitty's surprise. Just then, three men in armored suits jump through the storefront window and attack the three X-Men. As the X-Men battle the men, they find that they have been armed to combat their abilities. As the fight rages, Kitty is knocked aside and she is surprised when she phases right through the wall, but passes out when she lands in the alley. The X-Men realize that they can defeat their enemies if they switch opponents and easily trounce their attackers. Their victory is only brief as they are then struck by a massive mental attack by the white Queen who orders her minions to take the X-Men hostage. As they speed away she causes her downed minions armor to explode, killing them for their failure. As the white Queen has the X-Men stripped down out of their uniforms she tells her surviving troops she intends to experiment on them. When she is asked what she intends to do with Kitty, the White Queen dismisses her telling them that she can get her anytime. What the White Queen is unaware is that Kitty, having gotten the hang of her powers, has smuggled herself aboard the Hellfire Club's hovercraft, and wonders what she can do all by herself.
Tumblr media
Cyclops, Phoenix, and Nightcrawler have come to a Manhattan dance club to seek out the mutant in the are detected by Cerebro. Cyclops orders Nightcrawler to stay outside and watch secretly from the shadows for trouble while he and Jean search the nightclub for the new mutant. They are unaware that they are being watched by minions of the Hellfire Club, who have been sent out to capture the new mutant as well. Entering the club, Scott and Jean find the patrons to be very decadent. As they begin to canvass around to try and find the mutant, Jean finds the sordid thoughts among the crowd somehow attractive.
While at the Hellfire Club's headquarters, Jason Wyngarde and the head of the Hellfire Club, Sebastian Shaw -- get a report from the soldiers surveying the night club. Jason tells Shaw that he will personally see to Jean Grey and leaves to meet up with her at the night club. Shaw then checks in with the White Queen in Chicago. Emma reports back showing that she has captured Wolverine, Storm, Professor X, and Colossus, however the young mutant named Kitty Pryde has escaped. Unknown to her, Kitty has manage to sneak herself into Emma's industrial complex. Approaching Storm, she finds that something about the cages has dulled her mind. This however, doesn't stop Storm from being able to rip her costume and prove Kitty with a phone number to call. Kitty is soon spotted by one of Emma's guards and manages to flee the scene with her phasing powers.
Tumblr media
Back in New York, Jean continues to search through the crowd when she is confronted by Jason Wyngarde, and she finds herself seemingly living the past of her ancestor once more. She is at a burned out church in the middle of a wedding ceremony between her and Jason, with Sebastian Shaw acting as priest. When they exchange vows, Jean is unveiled as the Black Queen and she lustfully kisses Jason. The seeming "time slip" ends and Jean finds herself kissing the modern day Wyngarde right in front of Scott.
Tumblr media
Before Jean can begin to explain things, the musical act of the night appears on stage. She is a disco singer known as Dazzler who turns out to be the mutant they are seeking when they see her convert the sound around her into light displays. While outside, the car phone within the X-Men's Royals Royce begins to ring and Nightcrawler answers it. It is Kitty Pride calling for help, but before Nightcrawler can learn anymore he is attacked by one of the Hellfire Club soldiers in a specially made suit of armor to combat his powers. Two more of these soldiers also smash through the skylight of the dance club and attack Scott and Jean. Jean uses her powers to change their street clothing into costumes, shocking Scott at her display of power. The two find that these men's suit of armor have also been specially fashioned to combat their mutant abilities as well. They don't count on Dazzler entering the fight and distracting them with her light powers. This allows Jean to free Cyclops and the two switch opponents, easily defeating them.
Tumblr media
The last soldier and Nightcrawler crash through the skylight and he is easily defeated by Phoenix. Nightcrawler explains to Cyclops and Phoenix that the X-Men in Chicago were ambushed. Cyclops briefly explains to Dazzler that she is a mutant and that they need her help in saving their friends. Dazzler is surprised by all this, but agrees to help. As they leave in the Royals, the men inside the club explode, destroying all evidence of the battle. As Cyclops drives away, he spots Jason Wyngarde and wonders what he was doing kissing Jean. As his car passes by, the shadow that is reflected does not match Wyngarde's body. After the X-Men drive off, Wyngarde laughs over the progress he is making with Jean Grey.
Tumblr media
Kitty Pryde is being chased through the streets of Chicago by minions of the Hellfire Club that are bent on capturing her. They are stopped telekinetically by Phoenix, however when the X-Men try to calm Kitty, she panics and runs at first until Jean can calm her down. After a round of explanations, and learning that the other X-Men have been captured by the White Queen, Jean probes one of the soldiers sent to capture Kitty and learns about the Hellfire Club. This troubles Jean, as the Hellfire Club is the organization that the man in her "time slips" is affiliated with.
Soon, she, Cyclops, Nightcrawler and Dazzler smuggle themselves onto the property owned by Frost Industries, thanks to Jean's telepathy making it appear that the Hellfire Club soldiers had captured them. This even fools the White Queen who goes back to painfully extracting information from Storm's mind. Kitty meanwhile phases into the room where the other X-Men are held captive and manages to free Wolverine by putting her hand through the lock in his cage. She is spotted and stunned by a guard, however Wolverine is already free and pops his claws to deal with the guard. Just then, Phoenix and the others make their presence felt and attack the complex. As Cyclops, Nightcrawler and Dazzler go to help the others, Phoenix confronts the White Queen before she can use her mental powers to wipe out Storm's mind.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As Kitty, Colossus and Wolverine join the others they fight their way out of the complex, while Jean and White Queen lock in telepathic battle. Storm is horrified by Jean's show of power when her Phoenix effect emerged and overpowers the White Queen. Outside the other X-Men are about to turn back for Jean and Ororo when the complex suddenly explodes. Their worst fears are allayed however when Phoenix and Storm emerge from the rubble unharmed. Having pulled himself aside to watch the battle, the Professor commends his X-Men for a job well done.

The next day outside of the Prude home, Charles offers Dazzler a place with the X-Men, but she refuses telling him that she was born to be a singer not a super hero and departs. Just then, Kitty's parents emerge from their home, Kitty's mother relieved that her daughter has been returned home safe and sound. When Kitty's father demands from Xavier, he suddenly changes his tone and the Scott is told by Jean that she used her powers to change his mind and make him agree to let Kitty study at Xavier's school. Alone with Storm, Scott expresses his fears that Jean is abusing her powers, a feeling that Ororo believes as well. As they walk away to rejoin the others, Storm vows that they must do something before the power of the Phoenix consumes Jean.
Following their near defeat at the hands of the Hellfire Club's White Queen, Cyclops has the X-Men seek refuge at Angel's aerie, feeling that the mansion is no longer safe for them at this time. Needing privacy, Cyclops is carried by Angel to a butte out in the middle of the New Mexico desert where they can talk privately, much to the chagrin of Professor X. There Cyclops explains the X-Men's most recent clash with the Hellfire Club. Warren finds this hard to believe as he and his girlfriend Candy are members of the Hellfire Club. Scott goes on to explain that he's worried about Jean's powers. Before he can explain any further, Jean arrives and interrupts them to have a private and impromptu picnic with Scott. When Warren leaves them alone, Jean takes off Scott's visor, and much to his surprise she is able to hold back his optic blast with her mental powers. The two embrace and make love on the butte as the sun sets.

A week later on a stormy night, the X-Men return to New York City to infiltrate the Hellfire Club and learn why they are targeting the X-Men. Wolverine and Nightcrawler travel through the sewers to sneak into the club from below. As they are passing through the rapidly flooding tunnels, Wolverine slices open some electrical wires pointing out that they could use a distraction later if things get hairy, a move that Nightcrawler finds very sneaker. Meanwhile, with invitations organized by Warren, Scott, Jean, Peter and Ororo prepare to enter a prestigious party with in the club. Before they go in, they radio back to the Professor and Angel in New Mexico to advise them of their plan so that they can carry on if they fail. As Scott and the others enter the party and try to blend in, they are noticed on the security monitors by the Hellfire Club's Inner Circle: the cyborg Donald Pierce, and mutants Sebastian Shaw and Henry Leland. Shaw tells Jason Wyngarde that this is his chance to prove that he has full control over Jean Grey and send him out into the party.
Sure enough, when Wyngarde goes downstairs he quickly sweeps Jean off into another one of his illusions. When Scott watches Wyngarde taking Jean upstairs he follows after him and is shocked when he reveals himself to be none other than the X-Men's old foe Mastermind. Following after them, he is blasted by Jean who, under Mastermind's full control, has transformed herself into the Black Queen. Hearing Scott's scream of pain over the crowd, Storm and Colossus change into costume and charge after their friend. Running upstairs they run into Sebastian Shaw, and Colossus learns the hard way that Shaw can absorb any attack directed at him and transform it into strength and invulnerability. Shaw easily defeats Colossus in battle, but Storm manages to escape by creating a thick fog to obscure his vision.

Down in the basement, Wolverine and Nightcrawler emerge from the sewers to be attacked by Pierce and Leland. While Wolverine manages to damage Pierce's cybernetic arm, Leland uses his mass increasing powers to increase Wolverine's weight until he breaks through the floor and lands into the rushing waters of the sewers below, he is swept away and presumed dead. While upstairs, Storm is tracked down by Sebastian Shaw who easily defeats her in hand to hand combat.
With the X-Men defeated and their prisoners, Sebastian Shaw notes Jason Wyngarde's cockiness and begins to suspect that he is going to vie to replace him as leader of the Hellfire Club. When the two quibble over how effective Mastermind would be without Jean as his slave. The argument is quashed by the others who propose a toast to the newest member of their club, the Black Queen. While down below in the sewers, Wolverine emerges from the waters alive and well. He is incredibly angry, having seen the Hellfire Club's "best shot" he is ready to show them his own.
Tumblr media
The Hellfire Club's Inner Circle has sent some of their soldiers down into the basement of their prestigious club to find the body of Wolverine, whom they assume was killed in a fight with Henry Leland. Wolverine however is alive and well, and is hiding in the rafters. When they his wet body drips water on the soldiers below, they try to shoot him. They fail and Wolverine mortally wounds three of them before he seemingly takes some rifle rounds to the stomach and falls over in some boxes. However, he has been playing possum, having rolled with the shots he tags one more of the soldiers. With only one left on his feet, Wolverine freaks him out enough to get close enough to grab him. Threatening the man with his claws, Wolverine demands to know everything he knows about his employers in the Hellfire Club.
Tumblr media
While upstairs, the other X-Men are a prisoner of the Hellfire Club, who are celebrating not only their victory over the X-Men, but the addition of Jean Grey as their new Black Queen. Cyclops, with a ruby quartz helmet on his head puzzles over the fact that somehow Mastermind was able to take control of Jean by making her believe that she is her ancestor, a decadent woman who was a member of the Hellfire Club, and that they are not her friends but captured thieves and slaves that have betrayed her. Realizing that he and Jean still have their psychic rapport, Scott tries to see if he still has access to it in a bid to try and free Jean from Wyngarde's control. Nightcrawler meanwhile asks Shaw what he wants from them, and Shaw explains that the capture of the X-Men will facilitate his goals of experimenting on mutants so that his club can custom make their own mutants.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, on Muir Island, Sean Cassidy finishes his job around the island and goes to check on his lover Moira MacTaggert. She is exhausted after extensive research into Jean's new powers and she fears that her near infinite power levels could threaten the entire world. While in New Mexico, Angel and Professor X wait for word from the X-Men and Charles expresses the difficulty that he has with Cyclops leading the X-Men without his direction.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Back at the Hellfire Club, Wolverine takes a dumbwaiter up to the main floor where a party is still going on. He is considering his options on how to slip by undetected when a guard manages to get the drop on him, putting a gun to his temple. While upstairs, Scott access the psychic rapport with Jean to get into her mind. To his dismay, he finds himself transformed into a Colonial era outfit and that Jason Wyngarde is in Jean's mind as well, despite the fact that Scott knows that Mastermind has no telepathic abilities. The two get into a sword fight, with Mastermind warning Scott that whoever dies here will likely die in the real world as well. Downstairs, Wolverine manages to get the better of the guard who has caught him and tosses him into the middle of the party. With this distraction, Wolverine storms through until he is confronted by the Club's security guards who pile onto him with their clubs swinging.
While upstairs, Scott's telepathic sword fight with Mastermind ends when Mastermind stabbing Scott through the chest with his sword. In the real world the X-Men watch in horror as Cyclops suddenly screams and keels over and as far as the X-Men can tell, their leader is dead.
Cyclops has nearly been killed in psychic combat with Mastermind inside Jean's telepathic report she shared with Cyclops. As the Hellfire Club gloats over this victory, Jean looks on in worry. Before the Hellfire Club can do anything else, Wolverine bursts through the door tossing off guards as he goes. Sebastian Shaw orders Jean to attack Wolverine, which she does, however, while the others are focusing on that she uses her telekinetic powers to unlock the ruby quartz helmet on Cyclops's head. Scott knocks out Donald Pierce before using his optic blast to free his fellow X-Men and blast Henry Leland.
Jean stops her fight and tells Wolverine to go join the others, Logan goes after Leland to get revenge for his earlier defeat. Cyclops defeats Shaw by blasting out the ground out from under him, and Donald Pierce manages to escape when Colossus foolishly tries to stop him in his human form. Witnessing the battle, Mastermind decides to use his illusion-based powers to hide out and see what happens. As Wolverine dives down to the lower level of the Hellfire Club to attack his foe, Leland makes the stupid mistake of using his mass increasing powers on Wolverine causing him to land heavily on Leland with his claws out. As Sebastian Shaw tries to flee through the club, he is attacked by Nightcrawler and Storm.
The disturbance at the Hellfire Club does not go unnoticed, as the authorities are called in an alert also goes in at nearby Avengers Mansion where the Beast is on monitor duty. Reading about how his former friends in the X-Men involved in the commotion, he erases the record of the emergency call and goes to help his old comrades.
Back at the club, Colossus catches up to Donald Pierce and gets in an arm wrestle with him. Colossus's strength proves better and he breaks Pierce's mechanical arm, however, Pierce shocks Colossus in the face with his severed appendage and flees the scene. While elsewhere in the club, Nightcrawler and Storm try their best to defeat Sebastian Shaw in battle, however, he escapes as well. Meeting up with Pierce in one of the clubs many secret tunnels, he tells his comrade that he will make the X-Men pay for this. Upstairs Cyclops tries to calm the party goers, however, Mastermind uses his powers to make them think that he is attacking them. Just then, the power cables that Wolverine slashed earlier in the night connect with the rising rainwater causing the power to go out in the club. Cyclops runs into Wolverine in the dark and tells him to gather the other X-Men while he goes looking for Jean.
Jean meanwhile, giving into the darkness in her soul tracks down Mastermind and pins him to the wall. She finds on him a device created by the White Queen that allowed him to beam his illusions directly into her mind. She is darkly amused but destroys the device and then gives Mastermind what he wanted: control of cosmic power. Opening up his mind to the vastness of the universe Jean causes Mastermind to enter a catatonic state and leaves him. She runs into Scott and although she feels strange she accompanies him and the other X-Men as they flee to their ship parked in Central Park. Watching them go from the window, Shaw vows to ruin the X-Men's public image and turn them into public enemy number one.
The X-Men load up into their plane and take off just as the authorities begin to arrive. Jean, finally unable to contain herself, gives in to her dark side. She changes her costume into a crimson version of her Phoenix outfit and announces that she is no longer the woman they knew, but rather power incarnate. Suddenly, the X-Men's ship explodes due to her "power incarnate".
Tumblr media
Having escape from the Hellfire Club, Jean Grey finally gives into the dark side of her soul awakened by Mastermind, becoming the Dark Phoenix and destroying the X-Men's escape craft over Central Park. Miraculously, the X-Men survive the explosion and with quick thinking manage to make it safely to ground with only minor injuries. Their attempts to talk Jean out of attacking them fails and she easily trounces the team with her cosmic level abilities.
While not far away at the Hellfire Club, the authorities are investigating what patrons there believe was an attack by the X-Men. After seeing his colleague Henry Leland wheeled into an ambulance, Sebastian Shaw confronts US Sentator Robert Kelly, a guest at the party that night. He recommends to Kelly using his government connections to restart the Sentinel program so that they can hunt down dangerous mutants as part of his secret scheme to vilify and destroy the X-Men. Before the two men can discuss things further, Shaw is shocked to see a giant Phoenix effect fill the sky. Shaw is not the only one, as Dark Phoenix uses her powers to fly away from Earth her abilities are picked up by Mr. Fantastic's scientific equipment, Spider-Man's spider-sense, Dr. Strange's mystical senses, and the Silver Surfer's cosmic senses. As Jean departs, an Avengers Quinjet lands in Central Park containing the Beast who has come to the aid of his former comrades in the X-Men. He finds them beaten but alive and agrees to fly them back to the X-Mansion in Salem Center. While in New Mexico, Professor X has a video call with Moira MacTaggert on Muir Island where they both compare notes and realize that their greatest fear, that Jean has lost control of her new powers, has finally become a nightmarish reality.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
While in space, Dark Phoenix loops around the sun and uses its gravity to sling shot her out to a warp gate not far outside of Earth's solar system. This sends her to the D'bari system, which is part of the Shi'ar empire. She then feasts on the solar system's star, causing it to go nova and obliterate all the living creautres on the planet D'bari. This is witnessed by a Shi'ar flagship that goes in to investigate. While on the Shi'ar throneworld, Empress Lilandra is awoken to the news of the destruction and witnesses the destruction of the flagship at Phoenix's hands. Lilandra grimly considers that they must deal with this threat no matter the cost.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
On Earth, the X-Men have returned to their headquarters and wonder what they will do next. Scott, who still has his telepathic rapport with Jean witnesses the entire genocide through his minds eye and warns his fellow X-Men that Jean is returning to Earth, and she's hungry.
Tumblr media
Following the Dark Phoenix destroying the D'Bari system, Empress Lilandra of the Shi'ar meets with a galactic council on the threat that the Phoenix poses to the universe. The decision is unanimous in light of the evidence: the Phoenix must be destroyed. While on Earth, the Phoenix's presence does not go unnoticed, and receiving a warning from Dr. Peter Corbeau, the President of the Untied States attempts to contact the Avengers to find that only their butler Edwin Jarvis is present. When Jarvis terminates the call with the President, he notes that it was the Beast's turn to stay behind on monitor duty and wonders where he could have went.
The Beast is with his old comrades the X-Men, preparing for the Dark Phoenix's return by building a synaptic scrambler device to prevent Jean from using her powers. As Cyclops struggles to come to terms with what's become of Jean, Storm tries to console him. While down below in the Danger Room, Wolverine, Nightcrawler and Colossus attempt to blow off some steam in the Danger Room. They all come to agree that they must destroy Jean if they must, however their foremost duty will be to try and save her.
The Dark Phoenix meanwhile returns to her parents home at Annadale-On-Hudson and wakes up her parents and younger sister Sarah. Finding their thoughts impossible to keep out of her head, Jean attempts to keep her anger in check. However, she cannot and shows her family her powers by changing a houseplant into crystal. Noticing a fog outside Dark Phoenix realizes that the X-Men have found her and rushes out to meet them. Nightcrawler teleports behind her and places the synaptic scrambler on her head. Although this causes her great pain and limits her abilities, she is still able to hold her own against the X-Men's combined assault on her. When Wolverine gets close enough to her, she begs him to kill her with is claws, but Wolverine falters long enough for Phoenix's dark side to reassert control and blast him away. Having overheated the scrambler, Dark Phoenix removes it and locks the X-Men in stasis.
Tumblr media
She begins to torture them mentally until she is confronted by Cyclops who tries to convince her to stop fighting and almost has her won over when Professor X arrives and attacks her mentally. This causes her to flip back to her evil persona and attack Charles directly. The two lock in mental combat and after a match of wits, Charles Xavier manages to use his mental powers to force the Dark Phoenix persona deep into Jean's mind restoring their sanity. Although the X-Men have a heartfelt moment now that Jean is back they all wonder how long her sanity will last. When John Grey and his family approaches Xavier to demand answers, they are shocked when the X-Men are all suddenly teleported away.
Tumblr media
The Watcher has come to witness an event of cosmic significance: The fate of the Phoenix. Following the destruction of the D'bari system, the Shi'ar have teleported Phoenix, the X-Men, Angel and Beast aboard an imperial cruiser where Empress Lilandra has the unfortunate duty to tell her lover Charles Xavier that he galactic council has agreed the Phoenix must be destroyed. However, Xavier does not wish to put one of his students to death and calls for a duel of honor between the X-Men and the Imperial Guard for the fate of the Phoenix. After consulting this with the Kree and Skrull leaders, it is agreed that his will be allowable, and Lilandra agrees to the duel as well electing that the battle happen on the Moon's blue area. The Supreme Intelligence and R'Kill demand that their emissaries watch over the battle.
Tumblr media
The X-Men leave to rest up for the fight with most of them wondering what the Professor has gotten them into. That night, Jean has an alien tailor create a replica of her old Marvel Girl costume for her to wear, Nightcrawler and Angel practice in a training room, Wolverine -- after considering that this time he will kill Jean if he has to -- meditates, Beast takes a bath and takes up some of the local hospitality, while Storm and Colossus rest up for the fight. Scott is on one of the decks looking out into space brooding over his lot that the love of his life might be killed just when they were truly falling in love. His thoughts are interrupted when Jean arrives and shows off her costume, the two then decide to spend what could possibly be their last night together.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The following morning, the X-Men all agree to fight for Jean and are teleported to the surface of the moon where they find their fliers cannot fly too high without breaching the protective atmosphere of the blue area. The group is attacked by Starbolt, Manta and Oracle, causing the X-Men to split up to divide the Imperial forces.
Tumblr media
One group consisting of Beast, Colossus, Storm and Wolverine travel into the underground tunnels and clash with B'nee and his partner C'cll. When Wolverine and Storm are knocked down a shaft, they are attacked by Hossar and Earthquake. Wolverine is knocked into the Watcher's citadel while Storm is defeated by the two Imperials. While above as the battle rages on, Smasher tosses Angel down another shaft, prompting Nightcrawler to jump after him leaving Cyclops and Phoenix alone and out numbered. Inside the Watcher's citadel, Wolverine awakens to have the Watcher reveal that he's been watching the Earth for centuries before kicking Logan out of his home. When Wolverine is approached by what appears to be Storm, his enhanced senses detect that it's really the Skrull Raksor. Before he can deal with the shapeshifter, he is blasted by the Kree known as Bel-Dann. Disgusted at being saved by one of his mortal enemies, Raskor shape shifts into a bestial creature and attacks the Kree.
Meanwhile, down below, Nightcrawler finds no trace of Angel and attempts to get the drop on Manta, only to be blasted by her. Not far away, B'Nee incapacitates the Beast, while Gladiator goes toe-to-toe with Colossus and easily beats the X-Man into submission. Watching the battle from the Shi'ar flag ship, Xavier is upset witnessing his X-Men being beaten, and Lilandra mourns for her love. With the only X-Men left being Cyclops and Phoenix, the two agree to go out together and after a brief rest attack the remaining Imperials head on. However as the battle rages, Jean loses control of her dark side once more and begins to unleash the full power extent of her Phoenix powers once more. With no other choice, the X-Men begin to pick themselves up and change their focus to attacking Jean, despite the pain that it brings them to do so. When Colossus strikes a powerful blow to Jean strong enough to temporarily restore her sanity, she begs her fellow X-Men to end her life, however nobody can bring themselves to do it.
Tumblr media
Jean then runs into a tunnel with Scott hot on her tails. She traps him in a telekinetic shield and tells him that there is no other choice but for the Phoenix to die. Powerless to stop anything, Cyclops watches in horror as Jean triggers one of the long forgotten Kree traps on the Blue Area of the moon and has it blast her, incinerating her body. As the Phoenix dies, her final words are to scream out Scott's name. With Jean dead, Scott realizes how much he has lost that day breaks down in tears.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Witnessing this event are the Watcher and the Recorder. The Recorder finds this emotional tableau intrigued by the fact that they resisted the Phoenix's destruction. The Watcher points out that regardless of what happened, humans are emotional beings, and that despite the fact that the Dark Phoenix was regarded as a monster in the end, she died a human.
Tumblr media
At the funeral of Jean Grey, Scott Summers listens over the eulogy and thinks back over the years of his relationship with Jean Grey:
Tumblr media
He recalls the early day of the X-Men and how when Jean first joined the team they were all in love. He recalls the teams first battles with Magneto, Vanisher and the Blob; the formation of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants and their subsequent clashes against them. Scott remembers how distant he felt with his teammates when Professor X briefly put him in charge of the school and how Warren began pursuing a relationship with Jean. He also remembers their encounter with Ka-Zar in the Savage Land, the Stranger that saw the defeat of their old enemies Magneto and Toad, their battle against the Juggernaut, and Mastermold and the Sentinels.
He recalls a succession of battles against the likes of Mimic, Count Nefaria, the Locust, Chulculcan, Banshee, the Super-Adaptoid, Warlock, and Cobalt Man. He remembers how Warrens eventual relationship with Candy Southern would give way for Scott and Jean to pursue their own relationship.
The threats would continue to come however, with the return of Juggernaut who they defeated with the aid of Dr. Strange, their battle with Tyrannus and the Mole Man, their first encounter with Spider-Man, Mekkano and their battle against Factor Three which ended with a graduation and the group getting unique costumes. He next remembers the day they battle Grotesk a battle that saw the seeming demise of Professor X. The menaces never stopped, like when they saved Lorna Dane from Mesmero and a Magneto robot, and when they rescued his brother Alex from the Living Monolith, and later stopped Larry Trask's Sentinel, and battled Sauron, Magneto and his Savage Land Mutates, the Japanese mutant Sunfire and how Professor X resurfaced to prevent an invasion from the alien Z'Nox and how Hank was mutated into a more furry form.
His mind then focuses on the formation of the new X-Men to save the old team from the mutant island Krakoa, and their first mission against Count Nefaria that ended in Thunderbird's death. He then recalls the capture of Jean and the X-Men by Stephen Lang's Sentinels that would lead to the rebirth of Jean as Phoenix. Battling the threats of Black Tom and Juggernaut, the return of Magneto, the arrival of Empress Lilandra and how Phoenix saved the universe from destruction by stabilizing the M'Kraan Crystal and after their battle with Weapon Alpha.
He recalls how their clash with Mesmero and Magneto would leave Scott and Jean to believe each other dead. Scott would go on to help save the Savage Land from Sauron and Garok, Japan from Moses Magnum and their clash with Alpha Flight in Canada. While Cyclops and the X-Men were battling Arcade, Scott recalls how Jean was being secretly seduced by their old foe Mastermind. He remembers their clash with Proteus. Howe the reunited team would learn of Kitty Pryde and attempt to recruit her into the X-Men only to be ambushed by the Hellfire Club and how they manipulated Jean into becoming their Black Queen ultimately unleashing her Dark Phoenix persona until she sacrificed her life.
With Scott's recollection complete, he offers his sympathies for Jean's parents. Lilandra offers them as well and gives the Grey's a gift, a holomatrix globe that would fill them with Jean's essence whenever they touched it. Meeting up with the Professor, Scott would tell him that he is quitting the X-Men. The Professor understands and wishes Scott the best of luck. With one X-Men leaving the ranks, a new one comes: A cab pulls up in front of Professor Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters and out comes Kitty Pride who sits on the steps waiting for the X-Men to come home from the funeral.

ABOUT DAZZLER
Dazzler was originally commissioned by Casablanca Records in 1978 as an animated special to be a multi-media cross-promotion with the character known as "The Disco Queen". Marvel Comics would develop a singing superhero, while Casablanca would produce a singer. Marvel Comics editor-in-chief Jim Shooter wrote a treatment for the animated special, who quickly turn into a live-action feature-length film project that would be produced by Filmworks. Shooter put together a small committee at Marvel to figure out the character's nature, background and personality. Writer Tom DeFalco was the lead writer behind her creation, while artist John Romita Jr. designed her. The character soon changed its name from The Disco Queen to Dazzler, thanks to a suggestion from writer Roger Stern. Due to financial concerns, Casablanca Records left the project, but the film was still in the works.
Romita, Jr. originally intended for the character to resemble model, actress, and singer Grace Jones, but representatives from Filmworks – wanting to promote model and actress Bo Derek – insisted on design changes to reflect Derek's features. The film project was ultimately canceled after Filmworks refused to let Bo Derek's husband, John Derek, direct the movie.
THE ORIGINAL ENDING
The ending of the story was a matter of intense controversy with the editorial staff. Jim Shooter's recollections are that the original intent of the Dark Phoenix storyline was to introduce Dark Phoenix as a cosmic nemesis for the X-Men. This was what had been discussed originally among the creative team and Shooter, and this was the story development that had been approved. When Uncanny X-Men issue 135 was in the final artwork stages, Shooter happened to look at the proofs for the issue and noticed that the story included the destruction of an inhabited solar system, with an explicit mention of billions of lives lost. Louise Simonson feels it was Shooter's outrage over this plot element which led to him taking editor Jim Salicrup off the series several issues earlier than he had been scheduled to.
Upon questioning Salicrup about where the plot went from there, he was told that issue 137 ended with Jean being permanently depowered by the Shi'ar and released into the custody of the X-Men. Shooter disagreed with this development both from a storytelling standpoint as well as, secondarily, a moral standpoint, likening the ending to "taking the German army away from Hitler and letting him go back to governing Germany," and finding it out of character for the X-Men to retain friendly relations with a being who had committed genocide. Byrne and Salicrup explained that they had no problem with this resolution because they had always thought of Dark Phoenix as a separate entity who had possessed Jean Grey, with Salicrup drawing an analogy to the film adaptation of The Exorcist: "In the movie there's this little girl who's taken over and several people get killed, but by the end, when the demon's gone no one thinks, 'Let's kill that murderous little girl.'" However, on reading the issues over they agreed with Shooter that from the reader's perspective, she did not seem to be possessed, and Claremont admitted that while writing the Dark Phoenix Saga he was never clear in his own mind whether Jean Grey was possessed or her actions as Dark Phoenix were her own.
Shooter, during a conversation with Claremont, suggested a scenario where Jean would be permanently imprisoned as a compromise, and Claremont responded that such a scenario was unfeasible since in his opinion, the X-Men would want to continually try to rescue Jean from imprisonment. According to Shooter, Claremont out of frustration suggested that they kill off Jean completely. Although Shooter suggests that the proposed plot point was a bluff by Claremont, playing on the unwritten rule that main characters were not to be killed permanently, he accepted it, even over later objections by both Claremont and Byrne. Ultimately, it was decided by Byrne and Claremont to have Jean commit suicide after her Dark Phoenix persona resurfaces at the climax of the fight against the Imperial Guard. Issue 137 was left largely unchanged, but the last five pages were completely rewritten and redrawn for the new ending, and Claremont also took the opportunity to write a second draft of his script. Because of this, comparison of the original and published versions of X-Men #137 reveals numerous differences in the script with no connection to the ending; for instance, in the original version of the day of rest, the individual X-Men are each thinking of their own personal issues, while the published version shows them reflecting on their decision to protect Jean.
The original ending ultimately saw print in 1984 in Phoenix: The Untold Story. Besides the original version of Uncanny X-Men #137, it featured a transcript of a round table discussion between Claremont, Byrne, Simonson, Salicrup, Shooter, and inker Terry Austin, discussing the story behind the original ending and why it was changed.
REVIEW
Reading the whole saga (including the Phoenix Saga), takes a lot of patience and time. Depending on your preferences in comics, this will be a joyful experience. But the ending of this story has been reprinted several times, and most of us read the ending before the actual build-up. For us the story is spoiled and feels that it lasted too long.
But to someone that was reading this at the time, it must have felt like nothing was sacred in comics anymore. Marvel Comics in particular had a very strict rule of “perception of change” where things move a lot, but never really stay changed. This was a problem to the Marvel Creators of the seventies that felt like they weren’t able to expand their stories properly. Shooter, however, was of the idea of killing of all the characters and replacing them with new versions. But that’s a whole different story.
This is the first major death for Marvel Comics, and the story itself made comic-book history and changed some careers.
It was so influential that it ended up being adapted to film and television more than once. Other tried to do the same, but death, as we already know, started having any meaning in comic-books. And part of the fault is on Marvel as well, as they felt they needed the original Jean Grey back. Again, another story.
This was also a big change for the X-Men, losing a founding member, and with their leader quitting. Kitty Pryde enters the stage, as well as the Sentinels are in the horizon thanks to Senator Kelly’s hate for mutants. We all know what this leads to... there is even a movie about it!
I couldn’t imagine the Dark Phoenix Saga by another artist but Byrne (especially Cockrum). Everything in this saga stays in your mind.
While the story is not for everyone (it has a lot of kinky stuff if you think about it), it is part of history now. At least for Pop culture.
I give this saga a score of 10

Under Genosian Stars: A Cherik Fanfic
A cherik fanfic- Events happened after Dark Phoenix
It's been a year since Charles left the school since Raven died and Jean left. A year since Hank took over but Charles smiled knowing it's in safe hands. Charles Xavier now lives in Genosha with his husband Erik. Erik had proposed that day in Paris, his hand containing a ring and vowed to give him a home. To love him forever. After their wedding, Charles and Erik visited Raven's grave. Erik placed the flowers there as both had cried. Raven never had a chance to see her brother get married but she is there, up there in the clouds somewhere smiling. Mutant and Proud. She still is. Charles stayed in Genosha to rule with Erik. Together as one.
Genosha was calm and peaceful as Charles and Erik slept soundly in bed. Morning awoke them both where the light shines through the cracked window. Erik was the first to wake up. "Morning darling" he whispered kissing. Charles gently on the cheek. Charles smiled still asleep his eyes opening from a beautiful dream. "Morning Erik" Charles replied. After getting onto his wheelchair, Erik wheeled Charles to the dining hall for breakfast, their hands forever holding onto each other. "You know I've just visited Hank a month ago, he said the kids are doing okay. Scott has moved on, he is okay. Everyone is okay" he said, sadness still in his voice. "And you?" Asked Erik, moving to his husband's side. He took his hand and kissed it. Charles smiled. "I'm okay, still getting nightmares but you take them away and I'm grateful" how said kissing Erik on his lips, feeling his warmth and serenity. He had let go of his ego a long time ago, and can finally find true peace that he had wanted so long ago.
Charles had realised that what he really wanted was right there all along, staring at him right in the face. After breakfast, Charles went with Erik to see how everyone was doing; being the worker food and drinks, seeing how the children were doing and supervised the schools and daily activities. As night fell they watched the sun go down over the horizon. They did this every evening and watched the stars twinkle in the black ink sky. "Charles..?" "Yes, Erik?" "If you discovered a star will you name it after me?" Erik said as Charles's head rested on his thighs. Charles thought for a while before realising what his husband had said. "Erik... I'll do anything for you. You are my star, my friend, my lover." "So is that a yes?" Laughed Erik bending down to kiss Charles. Charles laughed too. "Of course it is" he replied pulling Erik down to the kiss. The next day was listed as Raven's birthday. She would have been just a year younger the Charles and with the promise that Erik gave that day they married they headed for New York.
Going back home seemed so nerve-wracking to Charles who hadn't been home since that day of 1992. They arrived with greeted hands. Hank with Scott and Peter waited for them. "Hey, where's Ororo?" Asked Erik hugging Hank, patting him on the back. "With the children, she is the head of the science department.. teaching the kids about metrology" Hank laughed. "Come on, they are waiting" Hank was still wanting to have Raven back but he had moved on and forgiven Charles. He had also had found a new profound friendship with Erik. Arriving at the school was weird to Charles too. He was stepping into a place he wished he would forget but he must for Raven.
As night fell, the real party began. The kids enjoyed themselves as the adults watched from a safe distance. Dazzler danced and sang, they cheered and celebrated the life that Raven had, the life that she had lived. "I'll just get a drink," said Erik kissing Charles on the cheek and neck before grabbing another pint. The party ended with each one placing one flower on Raven's grave. The students never complained as they had missed Raven too. Everyone did. After the party, after everyone went to bed, the old gang went to the kitchen for extra drinks. "She was my hero," said Ororo taking as a sip of her soda. Kurt and Peter just nodded. Scott just looked down, tears down his visor. Hank had just smiled through e pain, his love for Raven still burns his heart. "I miss her too" "Me too," said Charles, squeezing Erik hand. Rom squeezed back and sighed. "She was our friend, a sister, a mother..." he looked at Kurt. "She was a leader and she'll her be forgotten," he said looking at Charles.
Night fell and Charles and Erik laid on the spare bedroom. "You really meant what you said?" Asked Charles wrapping his arms around Erik. "Of course because I know how much she meant to you," he said kissing Charles on his head. "I know, that's why I love you" "I love you too," Charles said as both slept through the night. The next day they had said their goodbyes and left going back to Genosha. "Hey.." Peter said rushing past students as he arrived to see Erik and Charles. "Hey kid," Erik said. Peter smiled and ran towards Erik hugging him. "Miss you dad" he blurted out running out again. Erik looked surprised and but proud at the same time. "About time," said Erik laughing a little. Charles shook his head and laughed too and before hey left Charles talked to Hank. "Thank you, for everything. You are doing a great job" he said looking at Hank. "Don't worry, I have forgiven you remember?" He chuckled. " Now go before Erik becomes impatient" So they left with their goodbyes and went towards the jet again.
Erik and Charles looked back at the school again and kissed each other. "I'll miss this place," said Erik taking Charles's hand. "Me too" replied Charles. "Come on" cried out Hank laughing. They laughed together and just as they were about to enter the Black Bird, something happened. Erik had suddenly collapsed near him, his husband falling hard to the ground and soon he realised where all of this was coming from. Hank engaged in full Beast mode and ran in that direction. Charles went down with Erik; he turned him over and saw the blood, the thick red blood that ran down his chest.
The police were called, and Charles and Hank went to Genosha to treat Erik as quickly as possible. As the got down they rushed to get help and it's the help they needed the most. Hank stayed for a while to tend to Charles. But no medical help could do what has been done for it had gone too deep. Charles knew Erik's condition will worsen as he entered their room. The evening sunlight weak in his face in the darkened room. "C.. Charles?" Said Erik weakly. His arm outstretched. Charles wheeled himself to meet his hand, he held it tightly in his own crying as he did. "It's me, it's me sweetheart" he cried into Erik's hand. "Charles... y...you've got to end it.. the pain, the suffering.. please end it..." cried out Erik squeezing his hand hard. Charles cried not from the pain on his hand but the pain in his heart. It's happening again. "Please.. please...pl..." Erik's eyes widen and blood had dribbled down his mouth... Charles had lodged a knife into Erik's chest, his finger on his temple. "Sleep... shhh sleep now" cried Charles for he knew it's for the best. "This is for the best" Charles tapped final memories of them sitting there in Genosha, alive and happy as they sat down looking up in the clouds. Looking at the stars.
A year has passed and there Charles sat looking at the stars next to Erik's grave. He wanted to lay him to rest in the spot where they used to stargaze and there he was laid to rest where they used to see and dream about the stars. Charles cried but remember that during a few months ago Charles found a star. He named it Erik L. Xavier. "I'll see you again in the stars," he said placing the flower on his grave and wheeling himself back to bed. The bed he shared Erik. In Genosha where they were meant to rule together.

Rian Reads: Weapon X #2
Writer: Larry Hama Artist: Adam Kubert Inker: Dan Green Colorist: Joe Rosas Letterer: Pat Brosseau
Cover Date: April 1995
Tumblr media
Picking up the morning after the events of Weapon X #1, Wolverine has awoken to find Jean missing. Following the faint remnants of their “psi-link,” he tracks her down to the shores of Bristol on the west coast of England. Here, Jean is aiding in the check-in process for the untold thousands of humans rescued from Maine in Amazing X-Men #2. It wasn’t really clear to me before what Wolverine and Jean had been doing in Weapon X #1, but it is clarified during this scene that attacking the “Atlantic Sea Wall” created a hole in Apocalypse’s defenses through which the army of sentinels carrying human refugees could slip into Europe.
Moments after Jean and Wolverine reunite on the beach amid crowds of relocated humans, two of the evil mutants known as the Madri (Copycat and…Box? At least that’s what Copycat calls him) who had stowed away among the evacuated humans (in Amazing X-Men #2) are discovered by some security guards after setting off an alarm and a fight ensues. Wolverine and Jean jump in, quickly dispatching of the baddies, but the skirmish provides all the distraction that a separate group of nogoodniks need to slip past security.
Tumblr media
Now, far be it from me to question the fast and loose logic which has heretofore run rampant throughout the Age Of Apocalypse storyline, but…an awful big deal was made in those first 2 issues of Amazing X-Men about who the mutant killing Sentinels would and wouldn’t turn to mutie pulp depending on which virus they were infected with by some disk that Quicksilver had. In the end, Dazzler had reprogrammed the Sentinels for about the 82nd time that day to recognize the X-Men and NOT their enemies as friendlies, which begs the question…how did 2 evil mutants stow away aboard one of these Sentinels and catch a ride all the way across the Atlantic ocean amidst an entire fleet of them?
Yeah, you’re right…it’s probably best not to think about it.
Anyway, Wolverine leaves Jean to her volunteer work and hops aboard one of the Human High Council’s fleet of zeppelins which will deliver the bombs that they’re planning to use to nuke Apocalypse from orbit over in the United States (and anyone else unfortunate enough to be there at the time, which is presumably A LOT of innocent civilians).
Question: Why not use the Sentinels who just arrived on the shores of Bristol to deliver their bombs? They’ve got to be faster and more maneuverable than blimps. I mean, it’s even revealed in this scene that Brian (the leader of the HHC) Braddock’s Braddock Industries are the ones who manufacture the Sentinels. But I digress…
After Wolverine has a brief chat with Mariko, those other baddies who snuck past security in the first scene hijack one of the zeppelins in an attempt to halt the HHC’s attack on Apocalypse before it even gets off the ground (no pun intended). Wolverine makes the smartest possible decision and leaps out the window of his zeppelin, plummeting who knows how damned far to the hijacked (and flaming) airship below him. He takes out most of the bad guys, who it is revealed are “altered humans” (perhaps some of the guys that Beast has been cooking up in his lab for Apocalypse?) with names such as Pierce, Clegg and Slocum. Unfortunately, the leader of the pack manages to succeed in his mission, destroying the “analog guidance system” and foiling the HHC’s doomsday attack.
Tumblr media
In the wake of the battle, which leaves Wolverine burned to a crisp, he feels Jean’s psi-link stirring again and takes off on his motorcycle for a remote airstrip. He arrives just as she is in the process of taking off in a small plane to go and warn the folks in America of the HHC’s intention to blow them all to smithereens in hopes of saving some innocent lives. They share a kiss as Wolverine clings to the wing of the plane and Jean gives him permission to stop her from leaving by killing her if that’s what he thinks is the right thing to do. Of course, he doesn’t. Much to my surprise though, he hops off of the plane, letting her jet off to the U.S. on her own.
I’ve got to be honest, I really enjoyed the melancholy ending of this issue. I fully expected Wolvie to end up siding with Jean and accompanying her to America. While he may eventually back her play somehow, the fact that he stayed behind in England was a pretty big shock. I also tend to love when characters who feel like they should be together on some kind of quest are forced by their circumstances to separate and go it alone, so this gave me a real “end of Fellowship Of The Ring” vibe when Sam and Frodo head off toward Mordor alone, leaving the rest of the Fellowship behind.
Nerd Alert!
Tumblr media
Anyway, the writing by Larry Hama and art by Adam Kubert continue to be a good match for a story that isn’t my favorite of the Age Of Apocalypse event thus far, but certainly brings the action, which is always welcome. Onward and upward!

AngelEdit
Warren Worthington was born in Centerport, New York, to Kathryn Worthington and Warren Worthington Jr. He attends Phillips Exeter Academy in his adolescence when his feathered wings begin to grow from his shoulder blades. At first, Warren feels he is a freak and aberration, but he soon learns that he can use his wings to fly and help people. When there is a fire in his dormitory, he borrows some props from the school's drama department, dresses up as a heavenly angel, and rescues his friends. He soon learns that he is in fact a mutant. He dons a mask and costume, calls himself the Avenging Angel, and becomes a solo adventurer, before being recruited by Professor Charles Xavier for the X-Men.[8]
Warren's status as a wealthy playboy, as well as being an outspoken individual who chafes at the notion of being told what to do, is the subject of much tension within the X-Men. In particular, Warren is in love with Jean Grey, who is in love with Scott Summers, although he ultimately concedes Jean to Scott.[9] Angel still harbors an unrequited love for Jean even as he finds himself a girlfriend of his own, Candy Southern.[10]
While pursuing Sauron in the Savage Land, Angel is attacked by pteranodons and falls to his death. He would have remained dead if not for the "Creator", who is Magneto without his costume. Magneto provides the necessary medical treatment needed to revive Angel, and provides him with a new blue-and-white costume.[11] Unknown to Angel, the costume also has a device installed that lets Magneto gain control over Angel, which he does months later when he makes an attack on the X-Men.[12]
Around this time, Angel publicly reveals himself as a mutant after discovering that not only has his uncle, Burt Worthington (who goes by the name of the Dazzler — though he is in no way related to Alison Blaire, a later mutant heroine and brief love interest for Warren in her own comic series who also uses the name), murdered Warren's father, Warren Worthington, Jr.,[13] but also poisoned his mother in order to ensure his inheritance of the Worthington fortune.[14]
When the original X-Men are captured by the mutant island Krakoa, Professor X creates a new team of X-Men to rescue them.[15] When this new team decides to stay on as X-Men, Angel and the rest of the original team, with the exception of Cyclops, leave.[16] He and Iceman go to Los Angeles, where they found the Champions with Hercules, the Black Widow, and the original Ghost Rider.[17] Following the apparent death of Jean Grey and Cyclops' subsequent exile from the team, Warren rejoins the X-Men.[18] During this time, Angel unsuccessfully pursues pop star Alison Blaire, also known as Dazzler.[volume & issue needed] He grows increasingly disturbed by the behavior and actions of Wolverine,[19] and quits the team in protest.[20]
He is kidnapped by the Morlock leader Callisto, who intends to force Angel to be her lover. Storm, Nightcrawler, Colossus, and Sprite arrive in time to stop Callisto from cutting off Angel's wings (believing that without them, Angel will be unable to flee from her). Storm fights and defeats Callisto for the right to be the leader of the Morlocks, effectively freeing Angel in the process.[21]
Shortly thereafter, Angel joins the Defenders, along with Beast, Iceman and girlfriend Candy Southern.[22] Using Angel's Colorado house as their base, the group has several adventures before most of the group are killed freeing teammate Moondragon from demonic possession.[23]
Angel considers retirement following the collapse of the Defenders, but the discovery of Jean Grey alive changes his mind. Jean Grey is furious at the increase in anti-mutant hysteria in the two years she has been missing, and opposes the X-Men's decision to align themselves with the villain Magneto. To appease Jean's desire for action, Warren organizes X-Factor.[24] He recruits his old prep school friend Cameron Hodge to run the team, unaware that Cameron hates mutants, particularly Warren.[volume & issue needed] Since Cyclops is married to Madelyne Pryor at the time and reacts coldly to Jean's return, Angel takes advantage of Jean's need for emotional support and expresses his love for her.[volume & issue needed] This destroys Warren's relationship with Candy Southern, after Candy finds Warren consoling Jean.[25]
ArchangelEdit
X-Factor's formation begins a period of upheaval in Warren's life. Cameron Hodge abuses Warren's trust and portrays X-Factor as "mutant hunters" for hire, further fueling anti-mutant sentiment.[volume & issue needed] An altercation with the Brotherhood of Mutants allows Mystique to discover the relationship between the "mutant hunters" and the former X-Men; she exposes Warren as the financial backer for X-Factor, causing a public relations nightmare.[volume & issue needed] Warren's wings are mutilated during the Mutant Massacre by the Marauder, Harpoon.[26] When the wings develop gangrene, Cameron Hodge violates Angel's wishes and has the crippled wings amputated.[27] Despondent over the loss, Warren escapes the hospital and commandeers his private jet. It explodes in the air as the rest of X-Factor watch helplessly from below.[28] It is ultimately revealed that Hodge sabotaged Warren's plane in order to finish off his nemesis, in an apparent suicide.[volume & issue needed]
Seconds before the explosion, Warren is spirited away by the ancient mutant Apocalypse. Apocalypse offers to restore Angel's wings if Angel will serve him as one of his Four Horsemen.[29] Apocalypse subjects Angel to extensive genetic alterations, giving him blue skin and organic metal wings which can cut through almost anything. The wings can fire the metal feathers as projectiles. Apocalypse gives Worthington the title of Death. He makes Worthington the leader of his Horsemen after Worthington beats the others in a fight, and gives him a drug that remove his reservations to follow Apocalypse's dark plans.[30] Death is unveiled to X-Factor during their second encounter with the Horsemen,[31] and Warren sadistically exploits the weaknesses of his friends to defeat them in combat.[32] During a later attack on Manhattan, Iceman fakes his own death at Warren's hands, hoping that the shock of killing a friend will enable him to break free of the influence of Apocalypse's drug. Although freed, Warren refuses to rejoin X-Factor, feeling that he has changed too much psychologically to be a hero.[33]
He seeks out Candy Southern, but finds that she is missing.[volume & issue needed] Warren learns that Candy has been lobotomized to protect Cameron Hodge's secrets, including the establishment of the anti-mutant militia "The Right" using funds embezzled from Worthington.[volume & issue needed] In the confrontation that follows, Hodge murders Candy in front of Warren and Warren decapitates Hodge.[34] Changing his codename from "Death" to "Dark Angel", he later rejoins X-Factor and takes the codename "Archangel" during the events of Inferno.[35]
Warren later meets and becomes romantically involved with Charlotte Jones, a New York City Police officer and single mother.[volume & issue needed] It is with Charlotte's help that X-Factor frees Warren from the Ravens, a cult of near-immortal psychic vampires.[36] It is during this battle that Warren's survival is made public knowledge, allowing him to regain control over his family's remaining business holdings and his personal fortune.[volume & issue needed] X-Factor rejoins the X-Men following the defeat of the Shadow King on Muir Island.[volume & issue needed]
Angel againEdit
After rejoining the X-Men, Archangel's brooding behavior lessens, after Jean reveals to Warren that his wings (which Warren believes have a mind of their own) have actually been operating off Warren's own unconscious desires for violence.[37] This, combined with Warren's accidental decapitation of Mutant Liberation Front member Kamikaze,[38] leads Warren to try to reject the dark cloud that has hung over his head ever since gaining his new wings. His relationship with Charlotte Jones fades as Warren begins dating fellow X-Men member Psylocke.[39] In an attempt to put his dark days behind him, Warren retires his "Death" uniform in favor of the blue/white costume Magneto made for him.[volume & issue needed]
After Psylocke is eviscerated by X-Men prisoner Sabretooth during an escape attempt, Warren and the X-Men track him down and capture him, but not before he is able to badly damage Warren's metal wings.[40] Over time, the damage to his wings spreads. Eventually, the metal wings shatter completely, revealing that his feathered wings have been growing back within them and have broken them apart from the inside.[41] This follows a visit from Ozymandias, who tells him that he is indeed one of Apocalypse's chosen ones.[volume & issue needed] Reclaiming his original Angel powers, Warren still retains his blue skin color.[volume & issue needed]
Angel is one of several X-Men who are present when Gambit's culpability in the events of the "Mutant Massacre" is made public by Magneto, which turns him against his teammate.[42] Shortly afterwards, with the X-Men broke and their mansion stripped bare by the US Government, Angel volunteers money to help keep the team going, though this requires his reclaiming full control over his family company to do so.[volume & issue needed] Tracking some of his company's finances at this time, Warren discovers the former villains the Thunderbolts retrieving a jet that was used by the Champions, but although initially suspicious of the Thunderbolts' motives, after joining them in a confrontation with Graviton, Warren accepts their genuine desire to reform, leaving them with the jet as he wishes them luck.[43] Angel returns to the X-Men following the events of The Twelve, in which his wings (temporarily) further mutate into wings made of light and he gains talon-like hands and healing powers, which Warren uses to restore the mobility of crippled Horseman of Apocalypse War.[volume & issue needed] Returning to the X-Men, Warren finds his relationship with Psylocke gone, as she has begun dating new X-Men recruit Thunderbird III.[volume & issue needed]
When Rogue leaves the X-Men to join Storm's splinter group (X-Treme X-Men), Angel is promoted to head of the X-Men's field team.[volume & issue needed] Angel's squad fights the anti-mutant group Church of Humanity[volume & issue needed] and Mystique and her newest incarnation of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants,[volume & issue needed] and tangles with the Vanisher, who has gone into business with several medical companies to create a designer drug that could give humans mutant-like powers.[volume & issue needed] Angel also becomes entangled in a love triangle with rookie X-Men member Paige Guthrie and the mutant prostitute Stacy X.[volume & issue needed] Furthermore, during a battle with Black Tom Cassidy, Angel's regression to his pre-"Death" state is complete when he reverts to his normal Caucasian skin color when Cassidy (now turned into a plant-type vampire) attempts to drain Angel's life force from him.[44] His healing powers from The Twelve also manifest themselves again, in the form of the revelation that Angel's blood has miracle healing properties.[volume & issue needed][45]
DecimationEdit
Following the death of Jean Grey, Warren and Paige take an extended leave of absence from the team.[volume & issue needed] Warren begins doing overseas charity work at this point, in the form of a charity called "Mutants Sans Frontières" in Zanzibar (a reference to Doctors Without Borders), where he then proceeds to help stop a coup with the aid of Professor X's newest charges from nearby Genosha.[46] In Excalibur, Warren meets up again with Callisto. As Paige reminds Warren of his history with Callisto, Viper attacks, but Warren and Callisto defeat Viper together.[47]
In Generation M, Angel fakes having lost his wings in order to capture the Ghoul, a deranged serial killer who uses his retained mutant powers to murder ex-mutants.[48]
Though not an active member of any team, Warren reunites with the other surviving original X-Men — Cyclops, Iceman, and Beast — in a mission to stop Bishop from recapturing the fugitive mutants known as the 198,[volume & issue needed] though Bishop later joins them in their rescue attempt.[49]
World War HulkEdit
Angel joins with fellow former Champions member Hercules, Namora, and Amadeus Cho in order to calm down the rampaging Hulk.[50] Afterward, Angel discovers that Amadeus Cho has hacked into Warren's bank accounts and stolen several million dollars from him, to help him further aid the Hulk.[volume & issue needed]
Messiah ComplexEdit
Angel is part of the team that investigates the new mutant birth in Alaska.[51] He is later part of the team who is looking for former Acolytes.[52] He is next seen part of the same team, but attacking the Marauders.[53] Warren goes against Mister Sinister, but is easily defeated once Sinister recovers from Emma Frost's mental attack.[54] Angel is knocked out, but recovers and is present with the X-teams for the final battle over the fate of the baby.[55]
Divided We StandEdit
Angel is later seen flying over San Francisco, going to meet with Hepzibah, Warpath, and Iceman, when he stumbles across an area that looks as if the 1960s never ended. He contacts Scott and Emma, asking them for assistance before suffering the mind-altering effects of the zone, which are revealed to be caused by Martinique Jason.[56] Angel and the three other ensnared X-Men are sent by Martinique to confront Scott and Emma.[57] Emma manages to free them from the illusion and, during the fall-out battle, Angel rescues Mayor Sadie Sinclair. Thankful for the assistance and for the idea of having real superheroes in their city, Mayor Sinclair then talks to Cyclops and Angel about helping them resettle the X-Men in San Francisco.[58]
Archangel returnsEdit
In X-Force (vol. 3) #4, Warren is brutally attacked by a mind-controlled Wolfsbane. During the attack, Wolfsbane savagely rips Warren's feather wings from his back and runs away, taking the wings with her.[59] It is revealed by Elixir that Warren's wings, despite appearing fully organic, are actually still techno-organic constructs that he is unable to regenerate[volume & issue needed]. Wolfsbane later delivers them to the Purifiers, who are seeking the Apocalypse Strain, the techno-organics which comprise Warren's wings. The Purifiers use the Apocalypse Strain to modify an army of Purifier agents, giving them the same metallic wings that Archangel once had.[volume & issue needed] Meanwhile, although Elixir is able to heal all of Warren's injuries, he cannot regrow his wings due to interference from the Apocalypse Strain. Later in the story, Warren is gripped by a series of excruciating seizures that not only mysteriously regenerate his techno-organic wings, but also transform him back into Apocalypse's version of Death/Archangel, complete with blue skin and a techno-organic version of his uniform.[60]
X-Force attacks Archangel, who eventually asks for relief from the pain of losing his wings and transforming into Archangel.[61] Archangel escapes, to take revenge on the Purifiers, and at their headquarters he slaughters most of them in a blood-maddened rage. Once the battle is over, he reverts to his normal Caucasian, feather-winged appearance. He comments to Wolverine that he can still feel the metal wings inside him, and that they want to come out again. According to Elixir, Warren's transformation is permanent, implying that he is fully capable of transforming back into Archangel again at any time.[62]
In an attempt to understand what was done to both Wolfsbane and Angel, the pair of them are placed in a room together, where Rahne is forced to gaze at Warren. The mere sight of him causes her to become murderous once again, and she attempts to rip the wings from Warren's body once more. The sight of a psychotic Wolfsbane, as well as the fear of having his wings torn from his body again, causes a defensive reaction in Warren, reverting him back into his violent Archangel persona.[volume & issue needed]
From then on, Angel takes dual membership with both the X-Men and X-Force, though Cyclops forbids Angel from telling the rest of the team about the return of his Archangel powers.[volume & issue needed] While recruiting a scientist for Beast's "Science Squad", the X-Club, Angel is forced to transform into Archangel in order to destroy a giant rampaging monster. Beast reacts in anger that Angel has not told him that his "Death" powers have returned, creating tension between the two friends. Angel knows telling Beast would expose the latest incarnation of X-Force and effectively end Cyclops' latest tenure as leader if the truth about his personal black ops squad became public knowledge.[volume & issue needed]
During the X-Club's trip to 1906 in order to discover the origins of the modern mutant race, Angel transforms into Archangel a number of times to help further their mission.[volume & issue needed]
During the Fear Itself storyline, Wolverine and Archangel interrogate Purifiers member Benedict Ryan on where Jonathan Standish is hiding out.[63]
Dark Angel SagaEdit
In the "Dark Angel Saga", the "Archangel" persona of Warren, which was secretly created when he was first transformed by Apocalypse into his Horseman of Death, has finally taken over his mind, and he plans to be the heir to Apocalypse, bringing Ozymandias, Dark Beast, the Final Horsemen, Autumn Rolfson, and her son Genocide as his army to destroy humanity.[64] At the conclusion of the story arc Betsy stabs Archangel in the chest with the Celestial Life Seed, seemingly killing him. In the aftermath of the explosion of Apocalypse's citadel, Warren is seen by the members of X-Force walking in the snow. Psylocke, shocked that he is alive and apparently free of Apocalypse, runs up and embraces him. This Warren then reveals he had no idea who Psylocke is and appears to have amnesia. Warren has his normal white skin again but seems to have retained his metallic wings.[65]
Death and new personalityEdit
Following the Dark Angel Saga, it is revealed that Warren had indeed died and his soul departed for the afterlife, with his Celestial-mutated body now hosting an all-new personality with its own soul. He lost leadership of Worthington Industries and became a student in Wolverine's new school for mutants.[2] Although the new entity, who has chosen to retain the same name of Warren Worthington III and the code name of "Angel" is making efforts to be integrated, it is clear that he has no memory at all of the original Warren Worthington's friends and acquaintances, as his discussions with Iceman demonstrate and how he turned away former lover Psylocke.[2]
When Wolverine's legs were damaged Warren tried to fix them with a "miracle". When he failed he wanted to try it again but Wolverine wouldn't allow him, so he and a few other students went to the casino on Planet Sin. There they took the device that damaged their headmaster's legs so it could be used to heal him. While doing so he forged a friendship with Evan, a clone of Apocalypse.[volume & issue needed]
Warren tried to prove that he truly was a real angel by flying to heaven but he failed and accepted the fact that he was mutant. While falling he was saved by Evan and revealed that he could see the essence of people when he looked at them. Evan asked him what he saw when he looked at him and despite seeing only the image of Apocalypse, Warren told him that he could see nothing but goodness in him.[66]
Warren left the school with Bobby and Rachel to help his fellow mutants in the battle against the Avengers.[volume & issue needed] After the battle, he returned to join the stand against Cyclops, and has since regained all of his memories.[volume & issue needed]
Warren's childrenEdit
In an apocalyptic possible future, an aging Frank Castle warns the present-day Deadpool of the "son of Archangel".[67] During Uncanny Avengers (2013), it is revealed that while preparing to ascend as Apocalypse during the "Dark Angel Saga", Warren fathered two children with Pestilence of the Final Horsemen, who appear as the time-traveling "Apocalypse Twins".[68]
All-New, All-Different MarvelEdit
As part of the All-New, All-Different Marvel event, Angel has mysteriously reverted somehow to his pre-LifeSeed blue-skinned Archangel form, and appears as a member of Magneto's new Uncanny X-Men in order to protect mutantkind at all costs. His mind had also changed, having become nothing more than a silent and mindless predator controlled by Psylocke. Under her psychic leash, Archangel became a heavy hitter in Magneto's X-Men.[69]
Apocalypse WarsEdit
Psylocke and Magneto travel to Green Ridge, Colorado to investigate reports of an up-and-coming preacher who looks identical to the original Angel. They discover that he is indeed the Angel who was created by the Celestial LifeSeed and he is attracting a cult of religious fanatics around him.[70] It is revealed that during the 8-month timeskip after the events of Secret Wars, Angel allied himself with Apocalypse's son, Genocide and the Clan Akkaba in exchange for their help in controlling his Horseman of Death split-personality, which has revived as it is permanently linked to his own metal wings. Clan Akkaba are constantly harvesting Angel's rapidly-regenerating metal wings (in order to prevent the Death persona from fully possessing Angel) and grafting them into his clones, creating a mindless clone army of blue-skinned Archangels. The silent Archangel who is a member of Magneto's team of X-Men was merely the first such clone who retained trace memories of the original Angel and thus managed to escape to join Magneto's X-Men. Magneto and Psylocke are captured, but Psylocke easily escapes. She gets into a fight with Fantomex, who was sent by Magneto as back-up with Mystique, who herself freed Magneto.[71] Psylocke in a panic calls for the Archangel who is their teammate, who then telepathically controls the rest of the clone army into destroying the town, but the clones are all killed.[72] In a flashback, it is revealed that Magneto accidentally found Angel's unconscious and injured body in a barn during the 8-month timeskip and helped him recover. Magneto at the time gave up on being a hero, as the rest of the X-Men had either disbanded or fled to Limbo, but then was inspired by Angel to restart his own version of the Uncanny X-Men.[73] It is implied that Angel disappeared after that encounter, only to "reappear" as the silent Archangel. In the present, a chastised and repentant Angel explains to Magneto and Psylocke that he and the silent Archangel are ultimately two half-parts of the same one being, so they physically combine into a new blue-skinned persona. This new Archangel being is unsure of who or what he now was, but was determined to find out. He swore off all violence and returned with Magneto's X-Men to their base in the Savage Land.[74]
Time-displaced Warren Worthington IIIEdit
All-New X-MenEdit
Main article: All-New X-Men
When Beast decides to travel back in time to recruit the original X-Men to stop Scott committing mutant genocide,[75] Angel accompanies his teammates into the future, but initially prefers to return to the past rather than remain in such a twisted present. Even after his teammates vote to remain until they have saved the future, Angel expresses curiosity about what has happened to his own future self, as no reference has been made to his present condition.[76] The next day, the rebirthed Angel finds the younger Angel who asks him why he has metallic wings; the older Angel ignores the question and invites his younger self to go flying.[77] While flying above the skies of New York, the two Angels become caught up in H.Y.D.R.A.'s attack on Avengers Tower. Together, the two heroes are able to defeat the terrorists and capture Madame Hydra.[78]
Joining Cyclops and gaining cosmic wingsEdit
Frustrated after seeing what will happen to himself in the future, the younger Angel defects from the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning and joins the older Cyclops' new team of outlaw X-Men.[79] After the 2013 "Battle of the Atom" storyline, the rest of the displaced X-Men also join Cyclops' team, except for young Cyclops, who joins his father Corsair and the Starjammers.[80] Warren then starts a romantic relationship with X-23.[volume & issue needed] Later, the All-New X-Men accidentally travel to the Ultimate Universe, where Angel and X-23 encounter that universe's version of Wolverine's son, Jimmy Hudson and the X-Men.[81] During the events of the 2015 storyline "The Black Vortex", young Warren is imbued with cosmic powers and gains magic wings of light.[82] When asked by X-23 why he risked his life to gain new powers, he said he hoped that changing himself will alter his future and prevent him from being transformed into Archangel.[83]
RessurXionEdit
After the X-Men go to war against the Inhumans over the fate of the Terrigen, Angel joins the rest of the time-displaced X-Men in hopes of finally returning them to their own timeline. However they discover that they aren't from Earth 616's timeline and with no way of figuring out which timeline they're from, they become stranded on Earth 616.[84] With this knowledge in mind, Angel and the rest of the time-displaced X-Men leave the main team of X-Men to find their place in the world.[85] Angel joins the rest of the time-displaced X-Men alongside Magneto.[86]
After a series of adventures - which included the discovery that they actually were from the true past and the X-Men they had witnessed were actually the disguised Brotherhood of Mutants attempting to change history -[87] the X-Men are forced to return to the past when they are attacked by Ahab, a mutant-hunter from the future, and a younger version of Cable who feels that his future self has lost his way. Part of young-Cable's efforts include surgically removing Warren's new cosmic wings and replacing them with the wings Mimic copied from Warren in the past.[88] The team eventually return to the past, with Jean planting a psychic block on their memories so that they will forget about their experiences in the future until they catch up with the moment they departed.[89]

Just the 25-year-old actress’ hand was featured in a shot shared on 21-year-old Brooklyn’s Stories as she petted their adorable pet pooch.
And while the couple’s four-legged friend was the centre of attention, it was hard to miss Nicola’s emerald diamond dazzler, which is thought to be 4.5-5 carats.

Shannon Delany-Ron, director of communications at JamesAllen.com, told Mirror Online of the sparkling new accessory: ‘Nicola’s ring looks to be a 4.5-5 carat emerald diamond in a classic solitaire setting on a thin band.
‘Beauty and precision are hallmarks of the emerald cut engagement ring. The cut’s long lines give the stone its elegant and sophisticated look. I would estimate the value of the ring to be about $150,000 – $200,000.
‘This timeless style is a favourite among celebrities. Jennifer Lopez, Amal Clooney and Jennifer Lawrence all wear emerald cut engagement rings. Brooklyn’s mom Victoria also loves this style…’
Brooklyn and Nicola announced their engagement on Saturday, following reports the had popped the question.
And alleged details have since emerged of the couple’s upcoming nuptials, which are said to be costing £4 million.

They added: ‘It’s too early to set a date, but they’re aiming for the end of next summer or early autumn.’
MailOnline has contacted both Nicola and the Beckham’s representatives.

The happy couple are also reportedly keen to move to the US permanently, and are said to be house-hunting in LA where Brooklyn has allegedly been offered a number of internships.
Brooklyn took to Instagram on Saturday to announce he was engaged following reports he had popped the question to his ‘soulmate’ Nicola, 25.
He is said to have proposed on the weekend of David and Victoria’s 21st wedding anniversary, and gave her a £250,000 ring he had designed.

Brooklyn’s brothers Romeo, 17, and Cruz, 15, also sweetly offered their well-wishes on social media as they reported their sibling’s original post on their Stories.
The pair have been dating for around nine months and Brooklyn has previously dated actress Chloe Grace Moretz and model Hana Cross, both aged 23.
The couple often make proclamations of their love on social media and have shared several romantic snaps during their time in lockdown.
The pair have been isolating together in New York with actress Nicola having moved in with the celebrity offspring in March following just five months of dating.

The source said: ‘[Brooklyn] and Nicola are closer than ever and they are both excited to take their relationship to the next level by sharing the same home.’
‘Nicola has been a big hit with the entire Beckham family – both David and Victoria have made it clear to Brooklyn how much they like her. So they completely support him in this move – though they will miss him a lot.’

Whirlwind - Part II
Hey there!
It’s safe to say the latest events have taken our world upside-down and for me it’s had at least the positive result of getting me back in a writing mood. It’s been a hard couple of months but there is just something in everybody going through something somewhat traumatic that makes me want to snap out of my day to day “small-world” problems and be more proactive in life. So here is part 2 of Whirlwind, I can tell you I’ve never had to write anything as hard as this (try writing something highly technical on something you have zero knowledge about lol). Anyway, I think it came out decent so please enjoy and criticize! I would love to hear your thoughts on it!
All the health, and all the happiness xx
Part II - Bora
Echoes are bouncing within the sturdy walls of the San Diego Marine Corps Air Station’s main hangar. Blackshoes are in the middle of pre-flight logistics runs and equipment set-up before the launch of Top Gun program’s first training mission. Aircrafts are being carefully escorted outside towards the runway, the sound of their roaring turbines whelming Harry’s ears but he doesn’t let that disturb his self-reflecting musings. His body is leant on the metallic hinges of the warehouse’s entrance as his absentminded gaze doesn’t shift from the take-off runway.
He doesn’t know what to make of that, what to make of her. There is no questioning her skills and capability, one could never join this program without those…but two highly proficient flyers don’t necessarily equal one flawless unit. Especially since they know so little of each other. Be that as it may, the fellowship that binds two pilots flying the same aircraft is indispensable to their success. In those life-of-deaths seconds, when it feels like the sky is closing in on them and the next move can make or break them, it all comes down to one thing: the entrustment between him and her.
And he wants to. Wants to take his trust out from the jetted pocket of his uniform, lay it on the palm of her hand and enclose her fingers around it to keep secure. But it doesn’t work like that, does it? Trust is not so much a choice as it is a spontaneous feeling immune to rational thinking. And for a reason he doesn’t want to mull over too much, Harry can’t help but feel wary of her in a way. He’s seen her fire; the night before last when she made a fool out of their most redoubtable opponent. Recognized the same flame that used to inhabit his best friend’s eyes and make him the warmest being Harry ever got to be around. It doesn’t sway him as much as it scares him. Fierceness is a good trait in the Navy world, but too much of it can be deceitful. Harry experienced it first-hand.
He doesn’t dwell on it too much for now though, and makes his way to the back of the warehouse where his "classmates" have started to huddle while waiting for the superiors. Most of the promotion is there, the usual inner-groups appearing clearly to Harry as his eyes takes in the scene: herdsman Rex and his sheeps on one side while the other crews enjoy one last round of banter before their sternness is summoned for the first mission of the program.
Harry takes note of Aella’s absence just as someone calls out to him. "Styles!" It’s his callsign tumbling out of Dean Marshall’s mouth. Harry used to have another, but the only person who was allowed to make use of that one special letter, is no longer able to claim it.
Dean and his partner Emmet Iggersman - or as they are commonly addressed to on base, Dazzler and Tigger - complete the other half of Harry and Aella’s team. The four of them fly in tandem to form a section and hopefully fulfill the missions’ objectives before the others do. Harry has flown many a time with these two guys and he’s glad he’ll be able to count on them as well, should his new pairing go south.
"Hey Daz, how’s it goin’ ?" his greeting is followed by a good-natured handshake.
"S’ goin’ awesome, thanks for asking! My boy just started walking like a penguin on steroids right before I left. I swear the little champ is takin’ the helm to keep his mum on her toes while his father’s gone!" The proud smirk teasing Dazzler’s lips triggers a contagious chuckle from his peers as they all take in the sheer bliss coloring the new-dad’s face.
"That’s swell man! Send my prayers to Catherine, sounds like she might need it, yeah?"
"Will do Styles, but enough ‘bout me, how are you holding up? I can’t deal fo’ you man, what with Fox gone and this new partner thing…" There’s a painful tug at Harry’s chest at the utterance of Jonathan’s callsign, the nickname born from his tangerine-like hair though Harry always believed it was more reference to his best-friend incredibly cunning mind. He ignores it in favor of a more tempered and diplomatic answer than that of his crying heart.
"It’ll be an adjustment fo’ sure, yeah. But overall I’m just glad to be back in the game"
"As we all are Styl-" Tigger has just placed a comforting hand on Harry’s broad shoulder when he is interrupted by none other than Rex’s disdainful voice.
"Hey girls! How’s the BFFs reunion going?"
Dazzler doesn’t hesitate before stepping forward and firing back. "Just about a punch away from properly kickin’off. Why? are you offerin’?"
"Wooo I’m shaking" Rex replies with a fake tremor. Then he seems to spot something - or rather someone - coming up behind Harry and Tigger.
It’s Aella, head kept down as to not attract any attention. She’s seen the despicable man interacting with her new crew so she tries to reach the makeshift classroom (mostly just chairs lined up in a couple rows in the middle of a hangar) as inconspicuously as possible. The déjà-vu impression is not lost on her.
"There she is!" Aella tilts her head up, knowing she’s busted. "Miss James Bond Girl in the flesh! C’mere sweetheart, come show these suckers who wears the pants in this team!" Her hatred for him levels up a notch (as if possible) but Aella doesn’t know what she hates the most about this nonsense. The fact he is ridiculing her once again or the fact he’s acting like none of the after James-Bond-Girl-debacle two nights ago ever happened. As though she didn’t put him in his place like the badass she is.
Or maybe it’s the affectionate pet-name coming out of his repugnant lips and directed to her… Anyway, she doesn’t have the time to prepare a comeback before a second round is launched, this time at her new partner.
"Better watch it Styles! Next thing you know you’ll be the one in the freakin’ kitchen…"
"Cut it out, Rex-" Harry starts defending his team but a stern and humorless voice overpowers his.
"I don’t reckon anyone asked for your moronic opinions, dumbass. So please pack your ignorant bullshit away and leave us the fuck alone" She keeps her countenance as she tells him off but Rex is not budging an inch and neither is the insolent smirk hung on his face.
"Damn Harry, quite the mouthy one you have here. Sure you can handle her?"
"For Christ’s sake, please shut the hell up and go back where you came from Rex or by God I swear I won’t hesitate to have you weep on the floor for your momma like a baby, again."
"Again?" Dazzler perks up with a smiling frown just as Rex’s smugness fades away to be replaced by unadulterated contempt.
"You’re delusional if you think I can be scared of you Lonethorne" he spats out while backing away, head up mighty high. "Stupid cunts" he adds under his breath as he turns around to rejoin his buddies.
Aella knows she’s worked herself up but she can’t help but call out to him one more time. "Oh and Rex?… How’s the hand doing?" He doesn’t give her the curtesy of a respond but Aella is satisfied with the flare of his nose and the twitch in his eye.
Meanwhile the three men still at her sides are left speechless, Dazzler and Tigger still processing the heated exchange while Harry seems lost in his own thoughts. She’d done dit it again. Let the fire out and turned Rex’s crudeness into ashes before they could scar her skin. There was no attempt of taming the beast before she went in guns blazing and that doesn’t help assuage his worries one bit. She’s too impulsive is playing in his head over and over like a broken record. Because while Harry agrees Rex is the worst kinds of knobheads, he’s always believed responding to antagonization was pointless. Better to look the other way and let the jerk waste his energy on petty words that will never reach him. And because all in all, there are dogfighters, but that endeavor is reserved in the air, not on land.
"My my, darling. You just pimped the shit out of the least pimpable man on base. I think I’m in awe." Dazzler says after regaining his senses.
"Please don’t call me darling" Aella retorts softly as she knows he doesn’t mean it in any condescending way.
"Sorry. Aella, is it?"
"Yeah, that’s me. And you are…?"
"Dazzler, so very nice to meet you" he smiles widely accepting her handshake offer. "And just a heads-up dear Aella. After you tell me all about weeping Rex, you and I are gonna be besties, I can feel it" She chuckles lightly at his enthusiasm and decides she'll not only welcome his affection but also return it. Before she can reciprocate the sentiment however, the room falls suddenly quiet and a second later the reason, or rather four reasons, come into her view: Commander Berks, Lieutenant Rogers and two other officers that have yet to be introduced.
"Morning everyone, I can tell some of you over-indulged in Induction Rave. If you could put the same amount of devotion you put at getting faced into your training, I would be eternally grateful." Berks earns himself a full house of laughters before compelling the room back to sobriety. "Time to be serious now. ACM training was not invented to entertain you and make you look pretty up there. As an era where the potential of confrontation is constantly rising, air combat excellence is now more than ever a vital technique to the protection of our country. And don’t you forget that: you are above all defenders of the nation. Not heroes, not athletes, I say again: protectors. Best be at you sharpest then." The Commander pauses after his inspiring tirade.
"Now, let’s talk about this first assignment. Just plain good old-fashioned dogfighting to give you guys a foretaste of what’s coming. Today it’s gonna be 4 units at a time against 4 of ours. Your goal is to target any one of the instructors’ units while trying not to be shot yourself. I’ll say it now, we won’t go easy on you. This exercise is meant as an assessment of your current skills, so don’t get too cocky up there, just do your ex-commanders honor. First one to reach its target or last one to be shot wins the mission. Remember, there is no points for second place in this program." He pauses and starts grinning. "Now, show me what you got."
With that Aella tries a small glance in Harry’s direction but his eyes are fixed towards the horizon with a permanent frown shrouding their luminescence.
She sighs.
Tumblr media
Fully equipped of her G-suit, helmet and headset, Aella is making the last adjustments on her seat at the back of the cockpit. She’s not unfamiliar with the radar intercept officer position though she’s usually the one at the commands. She’s also used to flying alone.
The panel in front of her intimidatingly takes up all her front view with a couple of screens and numerous switches and tuners. Her perspective is limited to a peripheral vision on both side of the F-14 but she wouldn’t be relying on a full panorama to spot target and threats anyway. No her job is to accurately keep tract of all flying elements within the largest range and most anticipated time possible. There’s no point in crying out for enemy presence when they’re already at your six and firing away… Along with relaying their position to Harry, Aella can also suggest tactical maneuvers based on the predictions she draws from the opponents’ moves.
Speaking of Harry, they haven’t exchanged a word since their brief introduction two days ago. Now they’re both tightly harnessed to their seat about to navigate a near-thirsty-tons engine beyond the speed of sound. Aella’s never been a religious one but as the technician gives her one last thumb up to signal their operational status, she’s praying to all the Gods the awkwardness between them on land is nothing but the result of a subliminal force destined to counterbalance their incredible chemistry once in the air.
The canopy of the cockpit locks them into silence before Harry speaks up. "All good?" The mediocre quality of microphone’s transducer makes his voice even raspier than fathomable through the headset tucked over Aella’s ears.
"Yeah all good. You?"
"Same."
She thinks their conversation is over but then she hears a hushed voice. "Let’s kick the tires and light the fires" She figures it was more so for his own benefit though, so she doesn’t comment.
All too soon they’re propelled forward, backs pinned to their seats because of the tremendous speed pressure. It can be a small-scale body trauma for some but Aella has never felt more comfortable. A tingle of the fingertips later, they are welcomed in an infinite azure dotted by a few scarce clouds, the runway long gone behind them. Both pilots enjoy a couple peaceful seconds to take in their new panorama and then it begins.
"I’ve got a six strobe. I think he’s locked on us." Aella starts reading out the incoming movements entering her radar scope.
With a switch on his radio transmitter, Harry reaches out to Dazzler and Tigger as they are flying in a parallel tandem alongside them. "Tigger, you spot it?"
"Positive. It’s Rogers, looks like he’s a single." Tigger who endorses the same role as Aella quickly reports, before she pitches back in for a few more precisions.
"Contact at 900 knots closure. He’s gaining speed."
"Daz, it’s split time." Harry announces.
"Copy that Styles."
After Dazzler’s approval, the two aircrafts are both sharply veering outwards in a defensive split, leaving a Y-shaped trail of smoke after them. The move comes through as the chaser is contrived to choose one direction to follow, but to Harry’s dismay they get the short end of the stick.
"Rogers coming left, eight o’clock high." Aella signals immediately.
The scenery below them is a mix of wild purples and pale magentas, with fields-worth of lavender adorning the dry soil so characteristic of Californian lands. Peace and nature prevail on these grounds slightly remote from the bustling life of the city but the same cannot be said twenty-thousand feet above where Harry is caught in a tedious game of zig-zag trying to escape his pursuer.
"He’s tailing us. Watch your six!" Aella’s pulse quickens every time Rogers’ unit manages to lock its position right behind them. There is no more vulnerable position for a pilot than to have an enemy flying at their six. It usually means incoming fire. It’s why Harry is relentlessly jerking the TomCat in a rapid and unpredictable manner, the constant change in direction making it near-impossible for Rogers to locate, aim and shoot them.
"No shit Sherlock, why d’you think I’m jinxing so much?" Harry is starting to see spots on his peripheral vision from the gravitational pull, and he can only hope his tailgater is experiencing the same. Beads of sweat dotting his hairline and starting to dribble along his temples but it doesn’t put a damper on his concentration. He can’t relent or he becomes an exposed target.
"Goddamn, he’s not budgin.’" Harry tries with all his might to leave his frustration out of the cockpit but the situation is not looking up.
"You got new contact ahead, 2 o’clock." Aella perks up at the discovery.
"Imma bit preoccupied with Rogers up my ass, if you haven’t noticed."
She should have known pointing out a potential target while they were heavily pursued themselves was not what Harry wanted to hear, but she already had a plan all mapped out. That’s what Aella is her best at after-all: reading a situation and coming up with a strategy in .2 second flat, no reflexion needed, just the numbers, the physics and the sky on her side.
"I didn’t mean it as a target. You can use them as a shield if you keep Rogers high enough right before making a dive under them." She explains her vision to him, desperately wishing she could be the one in front executing it.
"He’ll just go above and back to tailgating us."
"Not if you barrel-roll right after the contact, he’ll just overshoot." His lack of response betrays his skepticism so she insists further, brushing off the way he’s second-guessing her.
"At the least, it’ll give you leeway and buy you some time." This time her argument weights enough to tip his scale in favor of her plan.
"‘lright then." Harry reluctantly agrees, tilting his chin slightly to the side as if he couldn’t believe himself he was going through with her move.  "’s gonna be snug timing."
"Just trust my cue." Aella’s words are left hanging between them like a desperate echo thrown in an empty ravine. Does he trust her? Does she? It’s definitely not the moment to reflect on it, much less have a discussion about it, but neither of them are oblivious to the eerie silence filling up their space like a faux smile greeting a bad joke. Then the aircraft is once again yanked to a blunt left and Aella is snapped out of it.
"That’s it. Target at 1 mile abeam 40° on your right." She’s got the fellow fighter in her line of view, both on the radar and through the bulletproof glass of the F-14′s canopy. "Keep high, keep high…3, 2, 1, drop!" Harry immediately complies, the aircraft nearly skimming the underbelly of its twin above before shooting right back upwards, nose pointing at the sun. The trajectory describes a half loop leaving them upside-down for a milli-second before Harry rolls them back to normal, in the end effectively realizing a vertical U-turn. Rogers skillfully avoids a fetal collision with the third wheeler but doesn’t anticipate Harry’s sudden volte-face, which leaves him ways ahead in accordance with Aella’s prognosis.
"Fuck, we’re losin’ airspeed." Because of such a twist of direction, they are indeed relegated to a lesser speed which Harry is not too enchanted about.
"He’s losing some too." Aella reasons, before jumping to another matter. "2 incoming bogies ahead. I think it’s Berks tailing Dazzler."
She’s barely finished her sentence that two familiar aircrafts flash passed them at such high speed, Harry has to crane his neck backwards to watch his friends in the same predicament he was mere seconds ago.
"I have to cover them." His instinct takes over.
"Fly your needles Harry, it’s too late for them." Aella objects to it straight away. Her mind is unbiased, she knows going for them would be pointless.
"Like hell I’m gonna sit tight, they need cover." Harry’s voice is categoric like he couldn’t ever fathom a world where he would leave his friends stranded for the sake of a mission.
"They already lost, Berks’ gonna turn for us now."
"You don’t know that." He replies adamantly despite her warning.
"Except I do. Daz was loosing speed, it’s over for them." Now she’s the one trying to stifle her frustration with all her might. She just wishes he would listen, but instead they’re doing yet another 180 to follow Dazzler’s trail to the rescue. She has no choice but to adapt and keep calling the positions.
"Contact ahead, four hundred, coming down. He’s gonna turn."
"Not if I nail ‘im first." If she weren’t so bitter about being ignored, she might find his determination admirable. Admittedly she can’t deny Harry is an amazing pilot, as are proof his excellent accuracy in space and timing as well as the ease with which he performs each maneuver. But alas, the git won’t take her words for it, no matter how knowledgable she is. Talk about eyes rolling…
Meanwhile, Harry is desperately trying to aim for the TomCat launched in his direction, but his opponent is using the same tricks he used against Rogers.
"Shit, ’s not stable enough to fire." Aella can’t believe he has to audacity to groan about it to her. DIdn’t she warn him?
Any shot is missed as the two aircrafts cross trajectories, nearly grazing each other
"Don’t lag, he’s gonna come around high at your five." Instead of commenting on his failed attempt, she communicates her best educated guess.
"How’dya figure?"
"Cause he was lagging too." Her retorts are getting sharper and colder as her annoyance grows the more he questions her. Her eyes take a rest from the screens on her panel to lay on the Californian landscape flowing passed them. They’ve wandered quite the distance away from the base, the relatively greener scenery of the seafront giving way to a craggy turf redder and drier by the meter.
"Fuck." Harry suddenly swears, the quality of his voice could rival the roughness of the ground Aella was just observing, and she’s effectively brought back into focus.
"Damn it, I told you!" She indulges with an expletive of her own once she spots the fast-approaching signal of Berks’ unit on her AMDR (Air and Missile Defense Radar).
"The fucker got in my blind spot, I’m doin’ my best here." Harry is quick to defend himself but the damage is done: they’re being chased down once again.
Aella thinks she’s starting to reach her disgruntlement threshold. The fact Harry isn’t much receptive to her ideas doesn’t alleviate her growing frustration at her lack of control over the damn carrier. "Well, step up before we get wiped." She spits.
"I swear to God Aella, now’s really not the time"
"If you just listened to me for- Watch out! At your six, closing fast!" She desperately wants to tell him off. Wishes she could go on a rant about how much of a dismissing jerk is being, but her duties reins her in when a loud signal starts beeping frantically on her board. Berks is locked at their six, a press of a finger away from shooting them.
"I hear that" Harry grunts as he gives a sharp jerk at the control stick in order to dodge Berks’ line of fire. He keeps jinxing the aircraft in all axis but Berks follows suit and matches all his moves.
"He’s too fast, I can’t get out of his fire range." Harry’s heartbeat skyrockets as the situation becomes more dire by the second. He doesn’t know how long he can maintain the zig-zagging going, for the sake of both his energy and the carrier’s. Abrupt moves are what’s currently keeping them safe but these are sadly the greediest in kerosene.
Then all hell breaks loose when Aella is hit by one of her craziest ideas.
"Try a complete thrust reversal of the turbofan engines."
"‘ the fuck?! Are you nuts?! It’ll send us spiraling."
Harry’s livid. He knew it. He fucking knew she was impulsive and way too reckless on the edges. She held too much fire in her hands for him to put his trust in them like he wanted to.
"Precisely." His harsh reaction doesn’t deter her confidence. "If you’re out of control, he can’t anticipate your moves, can he?"
"Are you even listening to yourself? That’s a stupid idea if I ever heard one."
"It’s not. You just have to switch back off the burners for a sec and you’ll get the control back."
"And what if I don’t?" She knows her calculations are foolproof but Harry won’t have any of it. He can’t think past the boldness and near-arrogance of it all.
"You will, just trust me." Once again, the words leave a bitter taste in her mouth, even more so because she knows he won’t likely follow through with it.
"That’s suicide mission Aella. I’m not doing it, that’s final." The last two words are categorical, a way for him to officially close the conversation.
"Damn it!"
The theory of it was beautiful really, but Harry thinks in practical and surefire moves he knows won’t send him six feet under before his time. Aella, on the other hand, has always relied on her infallible knowledge of astrophysics to enhance her flying experience. She’s followed the same motto ever since she stumbled across a quote that inspired her beyond grasp. It goes something like this: "aviation records don’t fall until someone is willing to mortgage the present for the future." And while she would never even entertain the idea of a reckless and immature move, her self-taught philosophy gave her access to a whole world of potential tricks most pilot couldn’t even conceptualize.
Aella is in the middle of regulating her harsh breathing when she starts noticing the spinning arrow on her altimeter. Her head swiftly tilts to the side to get a brief snapshot of the crimson soil of San Diego’s wasteland. They must be pretty far in the land if the upcoming sierra of rocky mounts is anything to go by. That’s not what is retaining Aella’s attention though. No, she’s more puzzled by the lack of space between her and the ground, the carrier grazing over pebbly elevations and lorn cactuses.
"Flathatting? That’s your idea? Christ Harry, the trees won’t save your ass." She figures if he doesn’t bother being civil then she could drop her filter too.
"Leave it Aella. Just do your job."
"I’m trying!" She fires back.
"Just trust me on this."
Blank.
"Fuck you Styles, that’s a two-way street." She’s actually fuming. He had the balls to call her out on trust when he hasn’t been returning her the same courtesy. If she had the time to worry further about it now, Aella would be questioning if coming to Top Gun and partnering with Harry was really a life-changing opportunity. So far, she’s had very few upgrades from the grim world she’s always been privy too.
"There’s a split trail 3 miles ahead on the left." She was under the impression they’d stop talking by tacit consent but the rasp of Harry’s voice through her headphones is no mirage. "I can lose him there. Can you read the positions please?"
She’s tempted to give him the silent treatment but the fervid pilot in her wouldn’t let her jeopardize a mission on such petty grounds. At least he was polite about his request this time. "He’s closing on 300 hundred, nose up. Going by 800 knots."
"Roger" Probably the closest thing to a thank you she’ll get from him.
They’re currently speeding through a gorge, tall cliffs of maroon stone fencing them on either side. Aella starts to question Harry’s move as it restrains their room for maneuver but then he makes an extremely obtuse left turn and she gets it. The intimidating mount on their left actually split into two narrow canyons. At the speed they were going, one is most likely to take the second channel whose angle isn’t as sharp as the one Harry chose. Only someone with previous knowledge of the surroundings would know how to successfully make that turn. It’s then Aella realizes Harry has more insight on the environs than he lets on, and his trick proves to be conclusive as Berks falls into the trap and enters the other passage.
"He’s out."Aella simply confirms, before Harry veers upwards and back towards the base.
"Hunky-Dory." He utters in that same whispered manner he used before their take-off. "Now let’s bug the fuck outta here"
Tumblr media
The moment she has her two feet on the tarmac, Aella is scurrying over to a furious-looking Harry.
Nostrils flaring, daggers in the eyes, they’re both squaring their shoulders once nose to nose, or rather nose to collarbones. She doesn’t give him the time to even part his lips before she’s jabbing her pointer finger at his taunt chest.
"You prick! I got better things to do than to fill some empty space at the back of your stupid plane. If you don’t want my insight you can shove it where the sun doesn’t shine."
"Insight? You call that insight?!" He starts laughing jeeringly. "’s fuckin’ madness is what it was. I can’t believe I passed the mission with someone like you babbling all that nonsense!" Harry doesn’t even care to temper his disdain anymore. He’s seen enough to make up his mind about her. He doesn’t like her. Doesn’t want to find out about the person inside because he doesn’t like the pilot that she is. It reminds him to much of futile losses and irreparable hurt.
"Someone like me?" Aella’s face turns sour and if it didn’t make her look so sentimental, her eyes would be hosting a few tears. She really thought he wasn’t like those sexist jerks back home. Maybe not the warmest but at least respectful of her talent enough to appreciate her place in the Navy. Now she hates herself for entertaining the fantasy of ever having an ally flying by her side. "You’re an asshole Styles, and certainly no better than Rex." Then before he can reply she storms off, too angered not to lose her wits.
And really, her last words don’t sit well with Harry, because he knows she’s not referring to the jerk’s flying skills.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JET!! I hope you have a kickass birthday weekend. I love the pink hair! I see Zarya but it all reminds me when Dazzler went pink for a while in an Excalibur reboot when Claremont was back writing again a few years ago. People's mileage varies but I'm a Dazzler fan so I hope you view that as a very long winded compliment!
Dazzler and I have a long and historied relationship, but I accept it as the compliment it’s intended. YOU ARE FAR TOO KIND.
My birthday’s actually not for about a week yet, but I thank you for the wishes!
