jiang cheng loses not only his brother but his cultivation again, in the same moment. at first he thinks it’s the demonic cultivation or the stress catching up with him but nobody else is affected in such a way. the mighty sandu shengshou, they whisper, rendered mediocre by the yiling patriarch in one final betrayal, but jiang cheng knows the truth as soon as he manages to unsheathe suibian with the last dregs of his spiritual power, and it fucking destroys him. :)

he probably resigns as a sect leader after a brief intermission because the jiang sect needs to show strength and he is the opposite, he is nothing. yet without him, all know that the jiang sect is a great sect in name only. the deathblow has been struck by wen chao so long ago. everything since has merely been the drawn-out last breath :)

jiang cheng survives his sect somehow. he has his nephew to live for, after all; he latches onto this last living piece of his sister while carrying his dead brother in his chest - the only doctor skilled enough to remove the dead core jiang cheng can always feel within him was the same one who placed it there, and she too has died. his life is bitter, filled with grief and resentment for both the dead and the living except for jin ling :)

and 13 years after it has dulled and died, the golden core suddenly flares to new life :)

So you’ve done your ideal roster for Shu, what about Wei, Wu, and other?

I have received a couple variations on this question.

For each faction I had to ask myself what story I’m trying to tell. Some characters are there because of their achievements; others are there because of the way they would act as foils to other characters. It’s also important to understand that in any given story, you’d see a lot of NPCs who also have importance.

Wei’s story is probably the most straightforward one. It’s all about the Cao’s conquests; pretty simple. Most of the characters are there to support that, while some are included for personal reasons.

Jin’s was the hardest to cut down, in large part because DW only gives them 13 characters and I decided to stick to that restriction. I decided that story would need to focus on the rise of the Sima family and their unification of the former Han empire. This ultimately meant that a lot of people who I wanted to make playable (like Dowager Guo and Xiahou Xuan) got cut - to keep the numbers limited most of the Sima family’s enemies got put in the NPC category. The remaining ones are the people I thought were absolutely essential to the overall narrative.

Wu’s was also very difficult. They also got less characters than Wei and Shu (though not as few as Jin) and have the longest continuous story to tell. While I originally considered restricting that story to a limited span of time that ultimately just didn’t satisfy me. So I focused on having a broad group of characters who could be used to tell every part of the kingdom’s story. Longevity was often an individual’s best friend.

For Others the question was which groups interacted with at least 2 of the 3 main factions. This immediately excluded a lot of groups (like the Nanzhong leaders or Liu Yao’s army); longevity was often a factor in choosing which individuals would best represent those groups. None of these were easy decisions; characters who could reasonably be put in this category but later joined one of the main factions were also favored.

I’m constantly second-guessing these lists, BTW. I’m always asking myself “Okay this person was IMPORTANT but is this a perspective we need to get the story from? Or could their importance be represented as an NPC? Why does this character need to be PLAYABLE instead of just important?” But that’s contradicted by the question of “Will this character actually seem appropriately important if they aren’t playable? Would I just be asking ‘If this person is so important why aren’t they playable?’ Is playability a measure of importance?”

Top 5 fandoms you want to write for but whatever reason haven't yet?

Oooo, SO MANY, but:

1. Kuroshitsuji / Black Butler - The right Ciel/Sebastian fic just hasn’t pinged me yet? I drive myself crazy thinking about it, but there are some really great fic writers in the fandom too, so I often just reread their fics when I feel like writing something.

2. Natsume’s Book of Friends / Natsume Yuujincho - I have a mighty urge, for some h/c fic with Natsume. Like, he’s just very whumpable, which the show knows too, given how often it damsels him.

3. March Comes in Like a Lion / 3-Gatsu no Lion - See above, Rei is extremely whumpable. Especially first season Rei. I want to do terrible things to him, which is like, you know, terrible things have already happened to him, lmao. I also really want to write a Shimada/Hayashida fic? (With Hayashida as the top, of course). Shimada needs more love.

4. Mo Dao Zu Shi / Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation - Mostly a Jiang Cheng/Lan Xichen rape recovery fic re: following on from trauma Jiang Cheng picked up while abducted by / tortured by the Wens. If I wrote anytihng else, it’d probably just be straight up Lan Wangji / Wei Wuxian PWPs.

5. Bungou Stray Dogs - Imho, there is never enough bottom!Dazai/top!Chuuya, though again, as with Black Butler, there’s a ton of good writers in the fandom, so I also can just...read their fics instead of writing my own.

The biggest issue actually for all of these is the cultural barrier. I like to do a lot of research when writing fics, or at the very least seem like I know what I’m talking about, but there’s just no way I can do that in a way that’s satisfying to me when the language barrier is so insurmountable. I know a lot of people attempt to do it, but frankly you can often tell when westerners are writing fanfic set in Japan and China, and if it sets my teeth on edge, I can’t imagine what it’s like for people actually familiar with those countries. I have a lot of respect for people who write in fandoms like this, but so far - aside from a half-finished Rakugo fic (I will finish it!) - I can’t make myself do it.

Which is ridiculous, because I did my university thesis on Ghibli movies back in like the early 00s. But even then I was painfully aware of everything I was missing, and all the language layers I couldn’t see or understand.

I just imagine all the ways I’d fail at it, and it’s very offputting. The only one that’s relatively ‘easy’ is Black Butler, because it at least makes an attempt at being set in Victorian England. The rest come with steep cultural and language barriers. I sometimes think about pulling the characters out into AUs where I don’t have to worry about it as much, and indeed, this has worked remarkably well with Bungou Stray Dogs fic. 

I’m not gonna lie, it’s actually one of the reasons why learning Japanese, or at least becoming more familiar with the language, has jumped to the top of my language list this year. I suspect nothing will happen with it, but...yeah.
