Guys, I just now noticed one more interesting little detail in the Untamed!
You know the names of the buildings in the Cloud Recesses: the lecture room/hall Lanshi (兰室, Lánshì, "Orchid Room"); Yashi (雅室, Yǎshì, "Elegant Room") – the reception room/hall; the spirit-summoning room/hall Mingshi (冥室, Míngshì, "Underworld Room" or "Room of Darkness"); Hanshi (寒室, Hánshì, "Frost Room") - Lan Xichen's residence; and Lan Wangji's Jingshi (静室, Jìngshì, "Quiet Room"), right?
The character used to write the "shì", room, in the names is 室, here seen in the Lanshi and the Yashi (the names are read from right to left):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As a side note, the Lan seem to use the traditional rather than the simplified characters, so the "lán" in the Lanshi is written with 蘭 rather than 兰.
BUT. Not so in the Jingshi! Instead of the 室, a slightly different character is used for the "room":
Tumblr media
My trusty dictionary did not know the character in question, so I started to look at what was different:
Tumblr media
As such, the character 凶 (xiōng) means act of violence, murder, evil. An evildoer. A murderer. And as Lan Xichen told Wei Wuxian, we know who lived in the Jingshi before it became Lan Wangji's residence: "It is the place where our mother lived in the Cloud Recesses".
Tumblr media
So, it seems that when the house became Madam Lan's prison, the character was changed to reflect her crime, denoting the place as the quiet room of a murderer. Accentuated by the reversed colours of the sign:
Tumblr media
This has probably been quite self-evident to anyone who actually speaks and reads Chinese, but was quite an oooff! to me as I realised. One more killer detail in CQL 😟.
And while I was at it, I just had to check what it says above the gate (seen here when LWJ returns home with the Emperor's Smile):
Tumblr media
As far as I can read it, the characters are 影竹堂 (yǐng zhú táng), which I freely translate as "Bamboo Shadow Court". An apt name for the place.
Tumblr media
Hopefully it offered some solace to Madam Lan.
And oh, I just have to add! As Hanshi is the Sect Leader's residence, Lan Xichen is living in their father's house, while Lan Wangji is living in their mother's. And the two houses are more or less identical, down to the furnishings (just check the scene where Lan Xichen confronts Wen Chao and his muddy boots in ep8 vs. The Wangxian Scene in ep43). So did Qingheng-jun have the house built for his wife, identical to the house she was not allowed to live in? That is quite plausible, in universe. Out universe, they probably had only so many buildings to shoot in :).

The Jingshi in Autumn by nikkidraws
Turns out, I didn’t mess it up after all 😅 although I’ve been reliabily informed by my bestie that that bridge looks likes it’s rising from the pond similar to the Loch Ness Monster. I may put this up on my shop over at INPRNT depending on interest - so let me know! I plan on doing a lot more of these kind of marker projects in future.
Speaking of my shop, there’s also currently (July 2023) a storewide sale of up to 40% off your order, and $5 wordwide shipping 👀 If you like my CQL set design saga, why not check out my set blueprints? Or you can head over to my kofi if prints aren’t your thing. I’m still a fairly new artist so I appreciate your support 🙏

He had his father’s directions to Gusu, but the journey was longer than he thought. He had gotten lost again and again, guided back by the weasel spirits Wen Qing and Wen Ning, had been given spiritual gifts from the tree spirit Xiao Xingchen, had been given food by the eager wolf-dog Jin Ling.
But when he arrived in the mountains, Lan Sizhui realized all that meant nothing, as he did not know how to reach the city in the clouds. He did not have Lan Wangji’s ability to summon clouds nor would Bichen respond to him the way it had to his mother. Helpless, he found himself staring longingly into the sky.
A great gust of wings and Wei Wuxian landed beside him in a whirlwind of black and white and scarlet. “Uncle! You followed me,” Lan Sizhui said in surprise.
The crane bent his long neck to look into the boy’s eyes. “Did you think I would not? I hatched alongside your father’s river, have guarded it and him, and cherish him like a brother. Do not think I would not protect his son when he is unable to.”
Lan Sizhui felt like a little boy again, taking his first steps with his hand fisted in his uncle’s feathers, wobbly and uncertain, and felt that all over again. Relying on Wei Wuxian’s strength to keep himself moving forward.
Lan Sizhui returned his face to the billowing, gold-touched clouds high above. Somewhere hidden in them was the great city his mother had left to see the world below, and had returned to a captive. “I have been given aid to get here, and gifts, but all of it would be for nothing if I cannot sprout wings.”
Wei Wuxian clacked his beak in thought.
“I will take you,” he decided. “It was I who first urged your mother to leave the Cloud Recesses to visit the world below, despite her being forbidden from doing so. Never before have I cherished the consequences of my actions so dearly.” The crane touched his scarlet forehead against Lan Sizhui’s.
The boy gripped Bichen tightly, steeling himself. His mother was waiting. “Very well. I do not know what waits for me above, but at least I have a fierce protector in you, Uncle.”
“Always.”
Gripping his shoulders securely, Wei Wuxian carried him into the sky. And with every great wingbeat, Lan Sizhui could feel himself grow closer to his mother, her presence like a bright beacon.

"This close, when Lan Wangji lifted his gaze it was all he could see. He’d been wrong in his guess; the panicked expression in his eyes was not fear, but the desperation of a man who sees a desert pool after only leagues of mirages, and is not sure if this one at last is real."

the Jingshi kitties are happily going on Kitty Adventures? One of them is in the middle of the pond in a pot. There's two kitties on the roof. A kitty is stuck in wwx's closet?
Wangxian are at their wits' end. When the cats were still tiny kittens, their adventures rarely went any further than trying to scale their strangely-shaped mother cats (i.e., Lan Wangji, Wei Wuxian, and Xiao-Yu) and sleep in their hair fur; but now, they're climbing up the chimney in the kitchen and stealing Forbidden Items from the Mingshi. ;-;

Madam Lan was framed.
The only one to believe her is Cangse Sanren, who eventually uncovers the truth. But just before she can reveal the evidence that will prove her friend's innocence, Cangse Sanren and her husband are killed in a "nighthunt accident."
Anyway that's my headcanon of the week: It's all connected.

New attempts at drawing the Jingshi are in progress. I'm still just winging the whole drawing in perspective thing, but I'm excited about this one.
