Book Review: Phantom Heart by Kelly Creagh
Date of Publishing: August 17th, 2021
Author: Kelly Creagh
Publisher: Viking Books for Young Readers
Genre: Paranormal, Fantasy, Retelling
This is book 1 in the series of the same name and revolves around Stephanie Armand who just moved into a new house with her father and younger sister for a fresh start but soon realizes there’s more to the house than meets the eye. And when the handsome Lucas Cheney starts taking an interest in her and her house, Stephanie realizes that maybe there’s some truth to the rumors after all. And let’s not forget about the handsome boy who keeps visiting her dreams. Who is he? And why can’t he let Stephanie go?
First of all, I’m so happy the author finally came out with a new series, though it took me two years to notice it. But I’m glad I finally have more to read from this author because I’m in love, no wait, scratch that, I’m obsessed with the author’s writing style and this book did not disappoint. I wish, I just wish I could write like this author because the writing style is impeccable.
Now when I saw this book, I didn’t know much about it and I didn’t care because I know I’d love whatever this author put out so I didn’t know it was a retelling of the Phantom of the Opera until I read through some of the reviews. I’ve never read Phantom of the Opera but after reading this book I might just pick up the actual play and give it a read, because I want to know if the real phantom is as interesting as Erik.
Now, on to the story. I loved each and every bit of the story. I’m not usually a fan of love triangles but like I said, I’m willing to read anything this author puts out and I’ve been rooting for Erik’s character since he first made an appearance despite the negativity surrounding him.
I loved the characters and the setting of the entire novel. The world is complex and eternally beautiful, but the highlight of the story was Erik and his many Masks. The other characters were interesting with their own personalities but Erik was something else. I wasn’t sure if the author intended for the readers to hate some of the Masks but I couldn’t hate any even if I wanted to. I especially enjoyed Spite and Envy and their constant gossiping and bickering. But the other Masks were no less interesting. I just wish I could be creative enough to come up with such a unique concept. And I’m not ashamed to admit that Erik is officially my book boyfriend now.
The gothic tone of the story definitely kept me going. I loved the two worlds in the house. It’s the first time I read something like this and I have to say I’m deeply impressed by the author’s talent. And I’m not exactly a fan of winter but I loved the winter in Moldavia as it added to the gothic appeal of the entire story.
Another thing that intrigued me was the symbolism of roses. Roses are one of my favorite flowers and the way the story has been centered around them really added another layer to the narrative and pulled me further into this beautiful sordid tale.
I also enjoyed the relationship dynamics between Lucas and his gang known as SPoOKY, but I was rooting for Stephanie and Erik because Erik has my heart and throughout the story I was just waiting for him to get his happy ending with Stephanie.
With all the reviews I read some people talked about the pacing of the story and how slow it was. I would have to agree with that but at the same time I’m glad I got to read more of the book and how everything was explained as the story progressed. Of course, Erik remains a complex character with the curse and his feelings for Stephanie but I think the length of the novel was perfect and if you ask me, I would’ve loved for it to be as chunky as possible without it being too dense. And that’s another thing I liked that the story was complex without being dense or convoluted.
It’s obvious that I can’t wait for book 2 to come out and follow Stephanie’s and Erik’s journey as they navigate the intricacies of their relationship but for now I just want to recommend this book to everyone who comes across this blog post. This book has a unique plot and a compelling narrative despite being a retelling and I want everyone to give it a chance.
So go and purchase this book at the earliest because even if you’re not a fan of the actual play I feel that people would enjoy reading this book. I, for one, can’t wait for the sequel and reading more about Erik.

I haven't talked about what books I'm currently reading on here, but I have a recommendation: Phantom Heart by Kelly Creagh
Tumblr media
As the book and description says: it references phantom of the opera and is a duel-pov fantasy retelling
I don't know if there's triggers (I haven't found some so far, and it's YA)
(spoilers below the cut is me sharing my favourite references to the 2004 movie)
Anyone else hears "Angel of Music"?
Tumblr media
I can't unsee the phantom after he appeared to deliver his script before "The Point of No Return"

He smiled like he couldn't help it. She couldn't believe it. He was actally smiling, teeth and all. Had she ever seen him smile before? No, she realized, because right now, it was such a jarring thing to witness that for a moment it felt as though she was sharing the car with a stranger.

Drunk Book Tag
So it’s time for another book tag. I found this book tag over on ZeeZeewithBooks’ blog who found it on MilliebotReads blog. The tag was originally created by booktubers Chelsea and Julie from ChelseaDolling Reads and Pages and Pens respectively. And without any further ado, here’s my take on the Drunk Book Tag.
Wine Coolers: You’re 16 and you finally managed to sneak one of your Mom’s Smirnoff Ices. What is one of your most guilty pleasure reads?
We all know the answer to this. And that is Escape by Nenia Campbell. I love the entire series but if I have to pick a single book I’ll pick Escape from the series. Also, a good dark romance is a guilty pleasure for me.
Beer: You’ve made it to college and are hosting your first kegger! Pick your favorite new-adult or college-aged book.
For this prompt I’ll go with All’s Well by Mona Awad. I love all her books which I’ve read so far but I especially loved the weirdness of this book.
Tequila: You partied too hard last night and drank a little too much Jose Cuervo. What’s a book you never want to see again? (Or your least favorite book)
I had to think about this for quite a while because I don’t normally despise books, but I ended up going with The Vampire Diaries by L. J. Smith because I can’t stand those book (s) and have no desire to see them anywhere.
Beer Bong: What’s a book you read super fast?
For this I’ll go with Oblivion by Kelly Creagh which is the last book in the Nevermore trilogy. I waited for the book to come out for a really long time and when it eventually did, I couldn’t help but devour it.
Spring Break: You’ve thrown your inhibitions to the wind and end up having a sexy night you’ll never forget. What is your favorite smutty read?
I will choose Even If It Hurts by Sam Mariano. I enjoyed the dark romance and the morally gray hero. I had a really good time reading this book and I wish I can read this book for the first time all over again.
Screwdriver: What is the most twisted book you’ve ever read?
This is an easy one and that is Insidious by Aleatha Romig. I still have a hard time thinking that the character actually did what she did and the ending still leaves me with goosebumps every time I think about it.
Long Island Iced Tea: The melting pot of alcoholic beverages. What is one of your favorite diverse reads?
For this prompt I will go with Her Majesty’s Royal Coven by Juno Dawson. I loved the story and the cast and how diversity is such a core aspect of it. I really enjoyed reading it.
Sex on the Beach: A drink that’s great in theory but wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. What is a book that just didn’t live up to the hype?
This was a little tricky because I’m not much for hype books, and even if I read them I read them after the hype has died down. But I ended up choosing Emily Wilde’s Encyclopedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett. And it’s mainly because I didn’t enjoy the genre as such.
Wine: You’ve just gone through a rough breakup, so you can park yourself in bed with your favorite bottle of wine, some ice cream, and a bucket for your tears. Name a book that made you cry out all your feels.
It took me a while to get an answer for this but I choose Reason to Breathe by Rebecca Donovan. This entire series had me bawling like a baby because of everything the protagonist goes through.
Strip Club: Your favorite naked hardback.
For this I will go with the Fairy Loot edition of Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead. I love the entire series and the hardbacks are just stunning.
So this is it. This is my version of the Drunk Book Tag. I tag everyone who comes across this post and I hope you enjoy doing this tag as much as I did.
