Quick Review: Kings, Queens and In-Betweens by Tanya Boteju
Rating: 5/5
This is so queer and unique and fun and I don't know why more people haven't read it??? If you've ever wanted to read a book about a baby drag king, find yourself a copy of this!
There's a disaster lesbian, a questioning trans girl, the fiercest and friendliest of drag queens and great things to hear about the complexities of friendship, family and forgiveness. And a really cute dog.

Sometimes i forget that HB and HH share the same universe... can you imagine how the Hazbin hotels season 1 finale looked like from the perspective of the characters of Helluva Boss? Are you really telling me that while those funky little red demons were dealing with their drama and angst there was a damn battle between Heaven and Hell? AND NONE OF THE OTHER SEVEN DEADLY SINS SHOWED UP TO FIGHT? Like, okay i get why they didn't, but seen Ozzie and Bee kill some angels could have been really cool.
(half of me in tempted to believe that The Sins have never seen Lucifer, their sweet dork of a boss, get angry or lose his cool and watching him beat up Adam terrified them. But the other half of me also believes that he has beaten the shit out of Mammon at least once, while Satan and Ozzie cheered for him).
I NEED to see Blitzo's reacion to all this mess, i bet it was hilarious.

So, I continue the theme of adult heroes, and this time the matter affected... adults. It’s one thing to give children mature traits, and another to age characters that are already sufficiently formed in appearance.
Suddenly, it felt quite sad. First, I drew the shapes of the adults' faces from the original, so that later I could literally recreate the aging process, which made me feel like they could never get back. This immersion in the irrevocable decline of youth helped me understand why I like to draw the characters of STF in their distant future.
I like the age range at which the characters are. While Sofia's generation flourishes, the generation of her parents fades. The peak of this contrast is right here, and I feel a bitter taste of joy from such sensations. I feel sad, but at the same time warm from the realization that they're all still nearby and terrible losses are still far ahead…
Wow, I wrote so much about flying heads. But enough about the sad stuff, because I also drew an adult Calista. I imagine her learning magic and practicing with the best sorcerer she knows.
I like to think that because of this practice, she and Sofia often run into each other, and they and her uncle have fun after work. I love imagining the little things in life, there’s something relaxing about it.
I also have something to say about Cedric. I see him with a mustache and beard, firstly, because all great sorcerers have mustaches and beards. And, secondly, because it seems wildly funny to me to consider the episode “Substitude Cedric” prophetic

Almost forgot to look at the tags in that Giordano post, I'm glad that Cardinals being higher than Archbishops was something you mentioned, and that I was remem that fact correctly :). And I love that Machete surpasses someone who thought him to be a "good for nothing". Go white boy go!

Also crazy theory but I could feel there was a bit of story troubles with WISH as I was watching-- and on relisten, I think At All Costs was originally meant to be between Magnifico and the queen?? Before it was changed to be Magnifico and Asha (either because they didn't want to cut it because they genuinely enjoyed the song, or didn't want to rewrite a whole new song, both are feasible).
Cos the whole thing just SCREAMS love ballad, and declaring devotion to one another (even in context)-- and I feel like maybe there was a version of the script where we were supposed to go more into Magnifico and Amaya’s relationship/history

winter king fascinates me because theres so many ways to read his character. we know from concept art that he still carries some of the crowns madness in him, and it does make me wonder
he clearly transferred the obsessions the crown instilled in him to princess bubblegum, along with the crowns tendency to make a person incoherent and forgetful. but we also know that the obsession the ice king feels is simply a deeply distorted form of his love. the most obvious example is his love for betty becoming an obsession with princesses. but what about marceline?
she states that shes moved a lot because ice king keeps tracking her down and trying to hang out with her. he becomes deeply distressed when he merely pushes her. he thinks about her a lot in his personal time, expressing a love for her music. is this in itself not an obsession, born from the love, protectiveness, and pride he feels towards marceline?
ice kings obsession springs from simons love, and simons love is a core part of his very identity. its why he can hold on to the past even when hes lost his mind, when he doesnt even realize hes holding on.
so what happens when he loses that reason to think back?
the winter king was ice king longer than he was simon. hes given up the love that connected him to that identity.
hes callous, rude, dismissive, vain, and emotionally oblivious, because thats all things ice king was.
and by this point, divorced from the emotions that made him simon, winter king no longer understands any other way to act.

The Twenty-First Night
A bit of 1001 Nights-inspired poetry that I wish was in The Art of the Night to make it more than just a spicy yoga manual or a spellbook. This is part of the longer scene I wrote, but I wanted to share it separately too, because I've been inspired by other BG3 poets. I'm not really a poet, but I did my best <3
~*~*~
That night, the king met his beloved once more in their chambers.
"Dearest one," said he,
"Gold I have given thee,
and jewels from my store;
chains for thy neck
and bands for thy wrists;
and still, thine eyes shine more brilliantly
than any treasure in my kingdom.
"What gem in all the realms
can be more precious than thy gaze?
What more can I give to you,
my beloved, so that you may know
the ardent depths of my heart?
What more, when thine eyes alone
make all riches seem as dull iron?"
"Tender-hearted king," said the queen,
"I need neither gold nor gems;
my love is not so cheaply bought
nor so willingly sold.
And yet, already thou possess
that which I long for most.
Thy steady gaze, my love,
and thy faithful hand are all I ask.
"Come, take my hand,
and look beyond this simple visage.
I will bare my soul to thee, this night,
and gaze boldly at thine.
For more than bone and blood are we,
but spirits merely housed in flesh.’"
