I've been feeling pretty burned out this week. Sunday I watched an episode of Pokemon and it made me sad and then I didn't really recover from that before I went into my busiest school week. 20 classes vs my normal average of 14, and the train times are awkward so I have to get to the classroom really early and don't get home until almost 11pm Tuesday - Friday.
But the good news is that NaNo is finished, so now I no longer have to push myself to write 1700 words a day every day. I'm really glad I did it and I'll do NaNo again next year if possible, but I think pushing myself to get all the badges wasn't super beneficial to my mental health. I'm still very proud of what I achieved though!
So yeah, lots of minimal effort studying this week. Hopefully this coming week I'll be feeling a bit more up to proper studying.
Progress updates? Eh, none really this week. I remembered the meanings of a few words in quizzes on Renshuu a bit more easily that I did previously, but that's about it. It's still worth mentioning though because any progress, no matter how small, is still progress, right?

I'd been feeling pretty demotivated about Japanese because I felt like I hadn't made any progress for months, but I finally started watching anime again and managed to catch quite a few words, and sometimes I could match up the translated subtitles to the Japanese words. I also went back through the anki decks I made for the N4 and realised how many of the words previously graded E or F I now know without really thinking.
Of course, there are still plenty of words I struggle with. But I'm getting there. Maybe by the end of next month I'll be able to move on to learning N3 properly. I've already started on N3 kanji (and, by extension, some vocabulary). I really need to focus on grammar though honestly.
I made a start on Enjoy Norwegian too, again. I've had this textbook for a long time and I keep saying I'm gonna actually use it and then I forget lmao. Unit 1 was pretty easy so I mostly just read aloud and answered questions aloud, focusing on pronunciation.
And then I had a 2-hour conversation with my Norwegian teacher. I booked a 1-hour lesson even though he said I didn't need to pay him, he just missed me and wanted to catch up. We've become pretty good friends honestly which is kinda cool, and we only stopped talking because I had to go to bed.
Last week's goals:
Learn the first bridge + second verse of 少女S - I'm more or less there with the first bridge (although I need the lyrics sometimes) but the second verse still needs work
1 chapter of Minna No Nihongo - Yes, I completed ch 6
At least 1 HIIT session and 2 stretching sessions - I did yoga twice, two HIIT sessions, went for a walk and did some dance. Go me!
Finish January's beginner Norwegian crash course + another 2-3 of February's WOTD posts - I queued half of the remaining posts and another week's worth of February's posts. Truly an ADHD mood lmao
This week's goals:
Learn second verse + bridge of 少女S
1 chapter of Minna No Nihongo
1 unit of Enjoy Norwegian
Finish queuing January's content + another week (up to day 21) of February's content
At least 4 stretching sessions/yoga + 2 other kinds of exercise

Language Logs 10/16-10/22
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Started using language logs last week to figure out what I'm slacking in for each of my target languages, and shocked on multiple counts. First, that I have such comprehensive resources for Arabic and Italian, but not at all for Norwegian or French.
I've also been trying out different schedules to maintain four languages at the same time. So right now, I'm trying to practice having one day a week be focused on one language. Currently, that's Monday for Arabic, Tuesday for French, Wednesday for Norwegian, and Thursday for Italian. Then, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, I was planning on using to patch up any holes I see in these logs, which I didn't really have time for this weekend oops...
Going to continue with this for another week or so to see if it genuinely helps and if it doesn't I'll be moving on to a different strategy.
All the love to @nordic-language-love for creating these awesome tools! Here is the post where I first read about them and there’s some awesome encouragement and tips on there.
Good look on everyone's language learning journeys!!!!

Month Review!!
Tumblr media
Korean
Total: 198
I wasn't planning to focus on Korean this much this much, but I guess immersion is doing its thing... I'll be showcasing my monthly favorite words I learned for every language as always, here are them in Korean!
主張 - 주장 - opinion 化石 - 화석 - fossil 同門 - 동문 - alumnus 甲富 - 갑부 - millionaire 비늘 - scales
Japanese
Total: 108
My secondary focus! I've improved a bunch this month!
きらびやか - dazzling 占い - うらない - fortune telling 合併 - がっぺい - merge 翌々 - よくよく - two...later 起点 - きてん - origin
Okinawan
First month of actual active study!
Total: 9
女子 - ゐなぐ - girl 起きっ - おきっ - to wake up
Mongolian
Total: 33
I was diving deep into conjugation, so that explains the lack of words... learned more conjugations this month!
энэтхэг - enetkheg - India зовлонг - zovlong - suffering дараалал - daraalal - order үндэс - ündes - root, foundation найз - najz - friend
French
Total: 53
Picked French up again... This is year 3 of French for me, after 2 years of no study. I haven't gotten rusty though! I think I've actually improved during my break! (Thanks EU for giving me constant French immersion)
connu - known lorsque - when net - clean, clear tandis - while tandis que - whereas
Mandarin
Total: ?
I didn't log my words in Mandarin this month but I did learn more than 10... I will need to focus on speaking a bunch!
Other languages:
I've been listening to a lot of foreign-language content! My friend group speaks a lot of Dutch, Hebrew and Thai, so a lot of unusual immersion :) I've also been learning more Cantonese from Youtube vlogs by accident!

Days 50-62 of coding everyday for a year! I'm not dead!
I have worked on C# and C++ so much in the last days of development. I haven't posted because I've been so busy with school. I'm on the president's honor roll so I'm working hard to maintain that. I have been working on setting up my .Net Maui application that I'll be using as my C# project final. I'm also going to be doing my C++ midterm this coming week.
I'll be working on getting my project started. Studying for my midterm, and learning as I go.

Whats ur headcannon for ULTRAKILL voices?
i think my ideas are fairly typical but!! since i love talking i’ll go on too long about it anyway :]
v1: being a war machine that wasn't really intended for heavy human interaction, it wasn't given a synthesizer and was never wired for speech. however, it was fascinated by the voices of other machines and it has since gotten itself a voice box for novelty purposes, although it's still not very good at speech - its voice is heavily robotic with significant glitching and pitch issues, and it's only used to convey direct points or to have fun. it highly favors nonverbal communication, including sign language, but it does like being able to produce weird little sounds for its own amusement lol
v2: v2 was given a voice box since it was going to work much closer with the public and while it still sounds distinctly computer-like, it has much better control of its cadence and can put some amount of emotion into its words. it speaks relatively fluidly as well and it enjoys talking A LOT, reproducing speech patterns that are much closer to human (it feels quite proud of this). it's become more accustomed to nonverbal communication as it doesn't want to waste energy speaking, but talking is its preferred method of interaction.
bonus definitely noncanonical round for gabriel: speaks only in the holy tongue, understands but doesn't use the infernal, and doesn't know any human language lmaoooo i like to think heaven and hell have their languages that souls automatically begin to speak upon entry, and gabriel was able to communicate with earthly humans through god's facilitation only. so what i'm saying is. v1 has no idea what he's shouting at it when they first meet. it does not have this language pack and it goes absolutely bananas hearing something it can’t understand bc that means it’s gonna be NEW. DIFFERENT. EXCITING. basically i like the idea that they both have to learn how to understand one another, gabriel reading its expressions and gestures, v1 learning his language :]

I listen to Norwegian radio a lot at the moment, although I don't always mark it on my productivity grid. I've been struggling to sleep, so I put on the radio as background noise and it helps to quiet my brain enough for me to drift off.
It's been a tough week. Last Sunday I broke up with my boyfriend after 7 and a half years together. Still not sure it was the right choice, but it's the choice I've made, and I'm not going to go back on it. Sometimes I'm fine and I can just get on with things but then I'll get hit with a wave of unbearable sadness and I can't hold it together.
Anyway, that doesn't really matter.
Friday night was great! I spoke a little bit with my Japanese colleagues, although I had to get them to translate most of their responses. We also went out for karaoke and now I'm determined to learn some popular, fun karaoke songs in Japanese for next time!
I'm picking up the pace wit Rødstrupe, finally. I'd hoped to have finished it already by this point, but, well. I haven't felt much like reading, y'know. But anyway. I highlight vocab as I go along but I'm not sure whethere I'll compile a list or anything afterwards. We'll see.
I'm planning to go back to the UK at the end of this week because I have to go pack up and move my stuff out of our house. I'm gonna try and do a bare minimum of a little Renshuu or some other app and just reading a short news article in Norwegian every day, but other than that I won't really have the time or energy to study.

Language Learning Log 2024 Week 5 (28/01 ~ 03/02)
Photo: This week I've been ill, so I've been occupying myself with reading Nothing To Envy by Barbara Demick and playing Pokemon X in Japanese
Japanese
Minna No Nihongo (1/2 a unit, read aloud)
Italki lesson (30m)
Kanji Dojo
Played Pokemon X
Norwegian
Wrote 3x journal entries
??? I must've read some articles? I'm sure I did. But I don't remember
I've not actually been logging what I've been up to this past week because I have been quite horrendously ill. I've had pretty much every single flu symptom at some point: vomiting, fever, fatigue, muscle aches, snotty af, headache, and now I've lost my voice too. I'm fucking over it. This is like the fourth February in a row I've been ill like this so I guess it's just a February thing for me now.
Anyway, I started playing Pokemon X because I felt like doing something fun and relaxing. And it's been great actually! Waaay back when I first started learning Japanese I was playing Shining Pearl in Japanese with just hiragana and honestly, it was a slog; I barely understood anything and didn't end up learning much. Now, I wouldn't say I understand much of X, but I'm using kanji and I'm at least at a level where I feel like I'm learning stuff. I'm reinforcing vocab I already know, seeing recently-learned kanji in context and even taking it upon myself to look up a few new words here and there (mostly ones that crop up frequently or contain kanji I already know). It's great to feel like I've made progress!
Other than that, I don't have a lot to report. My goal for this week? Get healthy again. That's it.

Language Logs 10/23-10/29
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Week two of my language logs and trying out the one language per day method! I'm getting more comfortable with pouring all of my attention into a singular language, so I think I might stick with this method. The one issue is that certain languages only get one day to shine (i.e. Italian), but these logs are super helpful in letting me realize what I need to be focusing on!
This weekend I did pretty well with practicing each language (poor Italian), but I still missed the speaking square for Norwegian. Also another update, I filled the entire column in French! Last week I was shocked to realize my resources weren't comprehensive enough, but I started an audio journal to force myself to speak and write, and now it's all filled in.
Once again, these are not of my own creation, so all props to this post for introducing me to them!
