artie, i have always loved your dogs and that has me thinking about getting a german shepherd. how was the shedding with two of them? were yours typically silly, smart, and protective? have a nice day!!
So, I've had 3 German Shepherds in my life so far (my mom had a bunch of them growing up too). They do shed a lot, my first dog, Dakota, did especially because he was more of a longhair. Super fluffy, super sheddy. Vincent and Leonard were shorthairs, Vincent in particular so he shed less. Leonard is constantly littering the floor with his fluff lol. It's not so far, but yeah they do shed and you gotta brush them and clean it up. Dog fur will be everywhere lol.
They all had great temperments and were super smart. Leonard is a little old man now but he remembers any new routine or where stuff is placed like a pup. GSDs are smart enough to be obstinate, Vincent in particular was super stubborn.
Dakota was the sweetest cuddlebug, I have no doubt he would've protected us from anything but he never had to, in part because he was HUGE, he was the biggest GSD I've ever seen and everyone was afraid of him (despite him being, again, just the biggest sweetheart in the world)
Vincent was super protective, he barked a lot. Leonard, though, he almost bit a guy's head off for getting too close to our yard (the guy was in the neighbor's yard but right up against the fence. Leonard broke free of me and with no warning ran and did a vertical leap and snapped inches from that guy's head. Absolutely terrifying but thankfully no harm done. After that I had no doubt Leonard would literally kill someone if they meant me harm).
Anyways, I absolutely love GSDs and do recommend them, just make sure you go into adopting one with all the knowledge of their needs and definitely take time to train them.

When life鈥檚 being weird. Go home, and pet a dog or three. Every chance I get 2+ days off work; I head back to my folk鈥檚 house to go pet the shepherds, play music, visit my brother; But, mostly, I do NOTHING but drink coffee and be lazy with the dogs for the day. Especially last night since there was a thunderstorm, I just sat with them on the couch and watched my favorite thing in the world. Those are moments I try not to take for granted. My 11 year old cousin grabbed my phone and took this... Shelters are really bad at that yeah, got a story about that.
I volunteered at a shelter a couple of times a week and got into a conversation about my own dogs with one of the staff members there. At the time I had a longhaired completely black german shepherd, tested parents, pedigree, the whole works. And this lady was adamant I had a flatcoated retriever mix because long black hair and how my dog was "too friendly" to be a full shepherd, lol. Completely ignored me saying she was wrong. Not that I care much what others think I have walking on my leash but she was so aggressive about it. Suddenly the terrier mix in the shelter I took on walks being labelled as a husky didn't seem that strange anymore. Some people are just silly.
Oh, my black GSD was always "no shepherds don't come in that color" and I was always like ???????
She wasn't particularly well bred but she was still very clearly a german shepherd.

Seeing you talk about Whim the way you do, you clearly love her so much and she seems so precious, it's made me consider Havanese in a whole new light but like, /grooming/. Where would you place her between a smooth dachshund and an Australian Shepherd / longhair GSD? Currently I have a dachshund and a lab.
Havanese have a unique coat. They don't shed at all, so they're great for people who have health problems like asthma, or who just hate cleaning dog fur off of everything. However, because of this, they are more prone to matting than other breeds.
The grooming requirements of Havanese are based heavily on your preferred length of coat.
Since Havanese are a companion breed, many people shave their dogs to avoid having to groom them. If you keep them in a puppy cut, shaving them around every 4 months, you probably wouldn't need to brush them at all.
However, if you want to keep a Havanese in a show coat, you'd need to be prepared for daily brushing to prevent mats. I will say that since they're very intelligent and love and trust their people, grooming (especially with solid counter conditioning from a young age) is pretty quick and easy. I personally actually quite enjoy it, and find it relaxing, but I understand that not everyone feels the same way. Keep in mind that grooming doesn't take much time, compared to the other high-coat-maintenance breeds you mentioned, because Havanese are quite small dogs.
I don't keep Whim in a long coat all the time, so I have some photos of Whim's coat at various lengths.
Here is Whim in December 2020, where she was shaved, and I did not have to brush her at all.
Tumblr media
This is Whim after about 3 months of coat growth. She needed to be brushed maybe once a week.
Tumblr media
Here is Whim, after about 5 months of growing her coat out. At this point, I was de-tangling her about every 2-3 days.

Finally, here she is at almost 7 months of coat growth. She needed daily brushing.

Let me know if you have anymore questions! I love this breed and I'm overjoyed to see other people taking interest in them :D

I thought you'd enjoy this ask the most out of blogs I follow. So, one of the dogs boarding at my work is supposedly a Tamaskan dog, but he looks way more like a longhaired GSD. He very well could be a mix of both, but I think it's hilarious how some owners will say their dog is one breed when it's very clearly a different breed.
Well Tamaskans have German Shepherds AND Saarloos Wolfhound (which are a GSD based wofldog) in their ancestry fairly recently AND they have an open studbook in some instances to increase diversity. This means that it's certainly possible this dog could be a Tamaskan but one that did not fit the standard well and is thus in a pet home.
It is also possible that the dog was misrepresented. Lots of people breeding BYB wolfalikes will often label their dogs as these emerging wolf-dog breeds to make their BYB mutts more appealing. The Tamaskan also has a somewhat shady history (called 'getting the wolfdog without the wolf' for years when they do indeed have recent wolf ancestry...although I see a lot of current breeders doing some REALLY nice work with their programs which is great to see).

samoyed or yakutian laika? gsd or malinois? akita or malamute? :)
Samoyed or Yakutian Laika? What鈥檚 the big difference between the Sammy and the Laika? I mean they look different but they鈥檙e both sled/herding/hunting dogs from Russia. The Sammies are fluffier but the Laikas have such fantastic markings. Ehm...Sammy bc I know one and she鈥檚 lovely.
GSD or Malinois? I鈥檒l take a longhaired GSD but are you trying to kill me?
Akita or Malamute? Malamuuuute! They鈥檙e funny.聽 And I want a sleddog team.
