Sometimes a girl has to go a little crazy. Sometimes a girl has to make a book-accurate floorplan for 300 Fox Way. These things just happen, sometimes.

Obsessive annotations under the cut ✨ but be warned, there's a LOT

Exterior

Okay first of all, I'm no architect, and my only knowledge comes from work experience in the real estate industry + a lot of Sims. The style is sort of neo-rural French colonial. I didn't set out to adhere to that standard so much as I made an amalgamation of homes in Blue Ridge Mountains-adjacent towns in Virginia. Specifically, my headcanon Henrietta template is Orange, VA (I'll save that explanation for another post) so I took inspiration from real estate listings from there.

Alright alright I know there is supposed to be one bathroom, but I simply can't tolerate that in a house with 6+ residents. I can't. There was a possible contradiction in the descriptions of "the single shared bathroom" that I used as an excuse to add a 3/4 bath, and I threw in a powder room for free. Because technically there is still only one full bathroom! But seriously with that many women over 30 most of them probably have IBS or chronic constipation and I'm not making them all share a toilet.

Officially we only have 4 bedrooms listed in text: Blue's, Persephone's, Maura's, and Calla and Jimi's shared one. Everyone else gets rooms that don't qualify as bedrooms via Virginia residential building codes (such as the attic, obviously, which falls below the combined ceiling height and square footage requirements). That really just leaves Orla unaccounted for but I'll get to that later. Other aunts and friends seem to visit during the day and live somewhere else, because in The Raven King only Jimi and Orla were described as needing to move out of the house during the demon stuff.

I designed the entire interior floorplan before I even touched the exterior, so there's a few issues, like how I'm totally missing shutters on the windows that functionally need them most. 🫶 I didn't feel like making the windows smaller to fit them, and I could have added faux-shutters but I think those are stupid. 😘

First floor

"This house is lovely. So many walls. So, so many walls," Malory said as Blue entered the living room a little later.

Right off the bat, we have an insane number of doors and walls. Old colonial houses are pretty much the opposite of open concept. Functionally I believe that's because it's easier to control heat with closed off rooms, but Virginia is not particularly cold so idk. As for the number of doors, I mean....😤😤😤 I prefer archways/doorless frames in small high-traffic spaces, but every time I thought I could get away with it Maggie would specifically describe doors opening and closing (For example BL,LB Ch 41 gives the reading room double doors, and even the living room gets one in Ch 11. What kind of living room needs a door???). I'm actually missing one of the doorways described in canon, but if you know which one I'm talking about I DARE you to find a place to put that thing!! But I digress.

I'm liberally using "crooked" to establish the corner turn stairs. Blue steadies herself on the stair railing when she identifies Gansey for the first time (TRB Ch 15), so I wanted the stairs to have good visual access to visitors. It also sort of has a feng shui-ish effect of separating the public and private energy zones in the house. If that statement made zero sense, I think one of us doesn't know enough about feng shui 👀 and it might be me.

I'm also using that quote to establish Maura's room downstairs, if Blue generally expects to find her mother there, but mostly because everything else was upstairs and it was getting hard to fit. Granted, at one point Blue leads the boys "up the stairs to Maura's bedroom" (TDT Epilogue) but since they were just arriving at 300 Fox Way those stairs could easily be the outdoor ones. There's a handful of little things to support me here, such as Adam grabbing a scrying bowl from Maura's room to use in the reading room (BL,LB Ch 41) implying that her room was the closest place to find one. And speaking of Maura's room-

Calla was overwhelmed by how much shit Maura had in her room at 300 Fox Way, and she told Blue this.

... The mess was taking years from her life. ... Maura liked chaos.

... The psychic hotline rang in the room next door. Calla's concentration fluttered away.

Maura is my favorite hypocrite. She claims to detest clutter (TRB Ch 34) and yet her room is literally described as chaos. She probably treats her room like a college student and moves the furniture every time she gets bored/stressed. Thus, I gave her the most insane furniture configuration I could think of while still matching all the contents described.

The phone ringing next door might imply that she neighbors the phone/sewing/cat room, but that area is pretty well described and Maura's room is never mentioned there in any other instance. That leaves us with the kitchen phone (TRB Ch 27) which I put in the hallway with kitchen access as a compromise so it would technically still be in a room next to Maura's.

In the reading room, the man looked around with clinical interest. His gaze passed over the candles, the potted plants, the incense burners, the elaborate dining room chandelier, the rustic table that dominated the room, the lace curtains, and finally landed on a framed photograph of Steve Martin.

There are so many quotes about the reading room that I just don't feel like citing them, but other details include the mismatched chairs, the shelves, doors etc. It's also described specifically as Maura's "front room" (TRB Prologue) so it's one of the cornerstones that I designed the rest of the layout around. Because of the plants, it makes sense that this room would be south-facing too. (Although idk how much light they get with the wraparound porch awning in the way. Oops lol!)

The outside suddenly seemed vivid in comparison to the dim kitchen. The April-bright trees pressed against the windows of the breakfast area, ...

Blue Stormed into 300 Fox Way's kitchen and began a one-sided interrogation with Artemus, who was still hidden behind the closed storage closet door.

Likewise, I'm using the particularly dim kitchen to place it on the north side, where we also know there's trees in the backyard.

I'll say the kitchen layout is weirder than it strictly needed to be because in the Virginia homes I referenced I adored all the strange kitchens, especially with old timey 'servants area' vibes where laundry kitchen and pantry are all connected. Instead of a kitchen island, they get one of those rolling kitchen carts which I doubled as a bar cart for the drinks they have in the living room.

The kitchen has a doorway to the hall (TRB Ch 13) and the living room is within view when Blue's on the kitchen phone (Ch 27).

Speaking of chapter 27, that's when we get the description "The morning light through the windows turned the drinks a brilliant, translucent yellow." So I put the living room on the east side of the house, where the rising sun would cast really strong light like that.

Second Floor

When she woke up, her normally morning-bright room had the breath-held dimness of afternoon. In the next room over, Orla was talking to either her boyfriend or to one of the psychic hotline callers.

Blue headed toward the red-painted door at the end of the hall. On her way, she had to pass the frenzy of activity in the Phone/Sewing/Cat Room and the furious battle for the bathroom. The room behind the red door belonged to Persephone, ...

- The Raven Boys, Chapter 11

Blue's room and the Phone/Sewing/Cat room are our cornerstones for this floor. In several examples we know that the Phone/Sewing/Cat room faces the street and has a window (TRB Ch 15, BL,LB Ch 4). While Blue's room is "morning-bright," we also get descriptions of guests at the front door "backlit by the evening sun," (TRB Ch 15) so once again we're probably talking about south windows if it's sunlit at both times of day.

Adam sat awkwardly on the edge of Blue's bed. It felt strange to have so easily gained access to a girl's bed- room. If you knew Blue at all, the room was unsurprising - canvas silhouettes of trees stuck to the walls, leaves hanging in chains from the ceiling fan, a bird with a talk bubble reading WORMS FOR ALL painted above a shelf cluttered with buttons and about nine different pairs of scissors. Against the wall, Blue self-consciously taped up the drooping branch on one of the trees.

We get some great descriptions of Blue's room (especially TRB Ch 43), although the above one is my favorite (#wormsforall). Every piece of furniture is accounted for exactly as described except the desk which I added because it seemed practical, and Blue is nothing if not practical™.

Persephone's room is also very well-described, all the way down to the furniture and lighting placement (BL,LB Ch 4 and TRB Ch 11) and it's surprisingly similar to Blue's room, if not a bit smaller. Her room gets strong afternoon sunlight, so I put it on the south too (BL,LB Ch 43).

Calla and Jimi share a room that's also upstairs (TRK Ch 16). Because they are the only two who have to share a room, I have justified that it must be the "master bedroom" (sorry for using that term) and is far bigger than the other bedrooms. I managed to fit two queen beds in there, but some scholars [me] would argue that Jimi and Calla might also share a bed because they are in love. Can you prove me wrong? No, you can't.

As for the bathroom, remember when I mentioned a possible contradiction? Famously, Maura draws the ley line symbol in the steamed up shower door (TRB Ch 1). However, much later we get Maura, Orla, Calla and Jimi all sitting in the bathtub for some kind of ritual (TRK Ch 9). No matter how I picture it, I can't put 4 full grown women in a bathtub together without someone partially sitting on/spilling over the side. But that would be impossible in a combo bath/shower enclosed by glass doors!! Thus, I gave The Bathroom a nice tub and put a small shower in the en suite of Jimi and Calla's room. I know this is a stretch but I don't really care.

Attic

Blue had never been a big fan of the attic, even before Neeve moved in. Numerous slanting roof lines provided dozens of opportunities to hit your head on a sloping ceiling. Unfinished wood floorboards and areas patched with prickly plywood were unfriendly to bare feet. Summer turned the attic into an inferno.

... In one of the narrow dormers, two full-length, footed mirrors faced each other, reflecting mirrored images back and forth at each other in perpetuum.

Trying to fit the attic access in after everything in the second floor was my biggest challenge, because stairs normally take up a lot of space and you have to be careful about head room. I'm the end, I decided it was one of those fold out attic doors that you have to reach from the ceiling of the hallway. We might get a lot of instances of the attic door being opened (😤 seriously, Maggie... 😤) but technically a trap door in the ceiling is still a door!

Dormers pretty much cemented the French colonial style for me. And you know the drill by now: a hot room probably means a lot of sun, which means I give it a south facing window!

Mud Room/Cellar/Basement

This cellar has absolutely zero mention in the text, but my justification is based in the architecture. So far we've got a funky old colonial house, built without a garage, lots of walls etc. Especially in a low-income/semi-rural area, it's not crazy to assume that 300 Fox Way was built before most residents had refrigerators (1930s-40s). Besides iceboxes, a major way to keep food fresh was root cellars. Modern renovations for old homes convert these to concrete basements, but that's why the basement is so small and connects to the kitchen.

My headcanon is that Orla originally shared a room. Pick whoever you want: Maura, Blue or Persephone, any of them would easily be such a chaotic roommate that Orla snapped and in a fit of teen girl rage moved herself down to the crummy dark basement. Over time, she made efforts to glamorize it, such as a vintage dressing screen to hide the flood drainage pump. The privacy also allows her to bring boyfriends over, even sneaking them through the mud room.

This is really just my artistic license, but I swear it makes a surprising amount of sense in context. There's cases of Orla sneaking into the kitchen (easier if she has a back entrance) and she's almost always using the phone upstairs or in the kitchen (because a basement would get bad reception) even though her calls get kinda ~intimate.

Aaaaaand I think that's everything. Sorry it doesn't look like the photo from the wiki at all, but I couldn't find a source for it and Victorian style wasn't super common in the areas I researched. Let me know if I missed anything major! I'll probably cry myself to sleep if so.

Amok - Absolutely

Shidou Ryusei x Reader

Quote: "Fall in love because it's your God-given right."

Shidou Ryusei was, in every manner of the word amok. Uncontrollable and disruptive.

Wild.

Brilliantly brazen in a way that not many things are.

Practically a force of nature.

A very alterent of human nature.

So, it was only expected that he would enter into an industry where he’d be able to do what someone like him did best. Draw in the attention of everyone around him. The life of an idol. He had, at one point, been invested in soccer but an injury here and accident there was enough to throw those dreams out the window.

But alas, that was but the past. Here and now he was an idol hopeful at the best school. A brand new world where only the best of the best are brought and found. Coming in through the special program known as Blue Lock.

Unconventional.

Cutthroat.

And wild.

Some were baffled and most backed away from such a strange program. But this was exactly the way he preferred things. The only way he would have chosen to live if possible.

The only certain way of leaving your mark on society.

The only certain way to leave your mark on the world.

It is, in modern society, almost a job to be praised by another - specifically another in the same industry or similar position. There are, of course, expectations for every rule but the generalization of it as a rule is simply because it appears so very often in present day society - for what’s a rule if not a standardized way of understanding things?

Regardless of the specifics, it could be said that praise in this world we live in, and specifically the idol world, is not easy to come by from other idols.

This was not so much the case for Shidou Ryusei.

Well, perhaps it was but in a roundabout way.

If Shidou considered someone brilliant he would proclaim it to the heavens.

If someone acted in a way Shidou considered admirable he made it clear he knew. Always made it clear what he thought and felt - leaving no room for any misinterpretations. And such was the only way for someone like him to live.

Though, it wasn’t as if everyone caught his attention.

Much like everyone else, his praise had to be earned.

Searches for someone that sparks.

Shidou hears the jazzy sound of the saxophone and snazzy beat of the drum before he hears your voice. Notices the jumpy piano only slightly after.

“Hey, be kind, be patient~ Be hard to please~ It seems contradicting, but do it honestly~ Just give a little, give a little, give a little, give a little~ Until you disintegrate~”

It catches his attention as he makes his way through the cafe.

Pop songs are what’s mostly popular nowadays. The cheerful upbeat songs that girls like you usually sing aren’t exactly Shidou’s cup of tea but he doesn't mind them all too much. Not like a certain stuck up classmate of his. They’re catchy and fun. Easy to understand and easy to play. Easy to like.

What really surprises him is how good your voice sounds with something one could almost consider Jazz. It’s exciting and unique. Gets his heart pumping dramatically in a way that it doesn't usually.

Almost sparks something.

Finds himself standing stuck to the spot until your song is finished. Practically entranced by your very being itself. Got his heart pounding dramatically and got the adrenaline running through his veins.

It’s exciting.

Thrilling.

Something so very him.

If someone acted in a way Shidou considered admirable he made it clear he knew. Always made it clear what he thought and felt - leaving no room for any misinterpretations. And such was the only way for someone like him to live.

Immediately he makes his way to you. Shidou notes that you’re pretty. Not jaw droppingly gorgeous but pretty enough that he’d do a double take on the street. Pretty enough to make his heart skip a beat. What really sets you apart from everyone else is those eyes. They’re brilliant and seem to exude everything he looks for in a person.

Though, it wasn’t as if everyone caught his attention.

You smile coyly as he approaches you, holding your hands behind you back in that polite fashion that pretty girls like you usually do. You’re so warm and bright - so very different from him. Now Shidou doesn't like to consider himself snobby. He’ll hang around anyone that gets his blood pumping, but those people aren’t usually like you. Typically a little more like him. Bold and brazen. Chaotic. Everything that you are not. And yet his heart seems to race with every step closer he takes.

But, of course, there were obviously people in this world that could catch his attention. More often than not, it was people like you. Someone brilliant.

“I like you!” Shidou declares. Loudly, proudly, and suddenly as his hand came in contact with yours. Your hand fits so perfectly in his own that he finds it cute. Finds you cute.

You smile politely, “thank you.”

“Bet you’re used to hearing that a lot,” Shidou grins from ear to ear, “aren’t ya?”

Your voice is coy and humble in every way that he isn’t as you reply, “not in such a straightforward fashion.”

His voice is brazen and bold in every way that you’re not, “perform with me.” It’s more of a command than it is a question.

“You’re with the Blue Lock agency, aren’t you?” You ask and Shidou finds himself torn, debating if your words were more condescending or curious. You say it in such a tone that he can’t really decide. In such a way that he’s certain makes even you unsure of how exactly you mean it.

Shidou nods proudly, “Shidou Ryusei. You’ve heard of me, haven’t you?”

“I doubt there’s a person on campus that hasn’t heard about the Blue Lock boys.” You say.

“Not what I asked, Sweetheart.”

You raise a brow, “sweetheart?”

“Ain’t that what you are?” Shidou asks, “a sweetheart?”

“I-” you seem at a loss for words as you attempt to recollect yourself, seemingly stuck between declining the compliment (in the polite way that most people do) and accepting it (in the way that Shidou really wants you to). “I suppose so.”

Shidou grins in response like a man who’s just won some great mystery prize, “course~”

You’re quick to recollect yourself, seeming recalibrating internally, as you flash Shidou a polite smile, “it’s a pleasure to meet you, Shidou.”

“Ryusei.”

“Hm?”

“Call me Ryusei.”

You scratch the back of your neck in an embarrassed manner, “I don’t think that’d be very appropriate.”

“It is.”

“And why’s that?”

“I said it before, didn’t I?” Shidou grins in a way that typically makes people’s hearts race, “because I like you~”

Bets that your heart's racing right now with how red your face gets. Imagines you’re not used to boys that’re bold and brazen like him - and he likes that. Likes that he’ll be the first man to barge into your life like a storm in an attempt to sweep you off your feet.

Someone like you deserves nothing less.

In the end he doesn't get you to agree to do a song with him but he does get your number!

Guess you win some and you lose some.

Despite how bright the sun seems and how blue the sky looks, the windy ocean breeze is ever so chilly. The golden sand is warm if only against the skin of your feet as you make your way to the water, Shidou’s hand wrapped tightly around your own.

He’d cornered you during the first period and managed to convince you to skip your classes for the rest of the day to hang out with him. Told you that he’d follow you to all your classes (regardless of if he was in them or not) and pester you until you finally agreed. And, being the ever sensible person that Shiodu isn’t you agree. Spare your classmates and teachers the pain, you suppose.

He ended up dragging you to the train station with a playful sorta look on his face that you just can’t seem to ignore. He’s just so damn happy that you agreed to come with him to the beach. You called it kidnapping or cohesion. He called it spending time with a friend.

He keeps his hand wrapped tightly around yours despite knowing you won’t pull away.

You’re such a nice girl.

Such a pretty girl.

He’d bet a whole lotta money that you’ve broken more than your fair share of hearts. You walk around with a warm smile on your face and a playful gleam in your eyes that’s magnetic.

“What kinda guys do you like?” Shidou asks.

“Hm,” you smile teasingly, “your brash aptitude to asking personal questions never ceases to surprise me.”

He takes the insult in stride, “thank you, pretty girl.”

“Well, at least you aren’t shy.”

Shidou quirks a brow, “you into shy guys?”

“Do you think I am?”

Anyone else, anyone sensible, likely would have pondered on that question for a little. Let it stir in his mind. Marinate overnight and debate on the implication the slight raise of your lip (always slightly more on the left than right) might mean. He might’ve wondered if you were testing him if he’d been anyone else. Might’ve even let go of your hand and look you in the face.

But Shidou is not everyone else.

He is distinctly and uniquely him.

A wild brazen storm running amok.

So of course he shakes his head, “course not. Why else would you be here with me?”

You seemed to have gotten better at hiding the surprise, or maybe you’ve gotten used to the surprise that he’s been afforded in return for his brash words. Well he doesn't consider it brash (preferring the term confident) but you do. And he likes you.

You smile in that polite way that he can’t, “perhaps you’re right.”

“Perhaps? Please, I’m always right.”

“Oh are you now?”

“Always right when it comes to you~”

And there’s the blush he’s been working towards.

Likes how you look when you blush - which is probably why he tries to make it happen so often. Though, one could also argue that that’s just how personality is.

You look off longingly towards the water, as if it holds the key to your heart. With a longing that Shidou’s all too familiar with.

So what else does Shidou do but drag you into the water? Brashly and boldly; not caring that the both of you are wearing running shoes and socks. To him, those are but simple little things. A note left alone in the bottom of a bag. Barely any notice.

You look as if you’re about to protest but stop by the time the water reaches your knees.

Much too late to complain about spilled milk now.

Well, Shidou might have to hear about it on the ride back when you both got wet shoes but that’s later and this is now.

Your hand somehow manages to slip from his own as you wander ahead of him.

Now, Shidou would never consider someone a God. Not for any religious beliefs of some strong self of self assurance but because he loved humanity. Loved it in a way a mother should unconditionally love her child.

He also happens to love a challenge - and even more so overcoming that challenge.

But you, Shidou thinks, out of everyone, could have been a God.

No.

Perhaps not a God.

Prometheus - if he had to give you a comparison. Someone that hands between humanity and immortality. Between life and death. Between this world and the rest of the universe. You were more than a human that simply walked upon this earth.

A thief in the night if his heart could be considered flames.

“This is how I want to die.” You say, your voice ever so soft and ever so gentle in that way that Shidou is not. You hold your hands behind your back as you turn around to face him, a pretty smile on your face. He wonders how it would feel to pull you close against him and press his lips to yours.

Your words, as they usually are, surprise him.

It’s not something he’d expect you to say.

Not something anyone would imagine you saying. Not while you’re so young and bright. So youthful and innocent. One could almost call it juxtaposition as you stand in the water, your shoes soaked, facing him, and proclaiming death as a companion.

His heart skips a beat.

This is it.

That spark.

“You’re brilliant!” Shidou exclaimed, as he took your hand in his own, “go out with me!”

Fall in love because it’s your God given right.

In the end he doesn't get you to agree to going out with him, but he does manage to get you to press a chaste kiss to his cheek.

Guess you win some and you lose some.

Humans have only one form of romance. [...] A single, linear concept. A concept usually denoted by a single symbol.

Looks like the playing-card symbolism is pulling double duty. Let’s see if we can predict what each suit means. 

The club contains three circles, so I think it represents the only relationship which involves three parties by default. In other words, it stands for auspisticism. 

Therefore, the spade is the other blackrom relationship - kismesissitude.

The heart is a traditional romantic relationship, which trolls call a matespritship.

That leaves the diamond for the ‘paler’, less romantic moirallegiance. 

Now that that’s settled, how are these terms formally defined?

RED ROMANCE, comprised of the flushed and pale quadrants, is a form of romance rooted in strongly positive emotions. BLACK ROMANCE, with its caliginous and ashen quadrants, is rooted in the strongly negative.

I thought that blackrom might be a combination of love and hate, but it doesn’t seem as if love is involved at all. Knowing that, I’m not really sure how it qualifies as ‘romance’.

I guess you could argue that it’s still ‘romantic’ in the Byronic sense, in that it’s a sad, cynical type of relationship. 

Those quadrants which are CONCUPISCENT, the flushed and caliginous, have to do with facilitating the elaborate reproductive cycle of trolls. Those which are CONCILIATORY, the pale and ashen, would be more closely likened to platonic relationships by human standards.

It sounds as if the concupiscent quadrants are the ones which involve physical intimacy. 

Considering the nature of the caliginous quadrant, this seems more than a little troubling. Should we really be encouraging trolls to pursue intimate relationships with people they hate?

There are many parallels between human relationships and the various facets of troll romance. Humans have words to describe relationships of a negative nature, or of a platonic nature. The difference is, for humans, those relationships would never be conceptually grouped with romance.

Ah, I think I get it. 

A lot of these relationships aren’t meant to fit the human definition of romance - because on Alternia, ‘romance’ is defined more broadly than it typically is on Earth.

Most humans, looking at a moirallegiance, would parse it as fully platonic. They’d see that fact as contradictory to its romantic nature, and they’d be correct - but only according to the human definition of romance. 

A troll would agree that it’s fully platonic, but would fail to see the contradiction. That’s because to a troll, platonic and romantic aren’t mutually exclusive. They’d say that a moirallegiance is a platonic variety of romance. 

 Establishing those sort of relationships for humans is not driven by the same primal forces that drive our tendency to couple romantically. But for trolls, those primal forces involve themselves in the full palette of these relationships, red or black, torrid or friendly. Trolls typically feel strongly compelled to find balance in each quadrant, and seek gratifying relationships that each describes.

It seems as if trolls are biologically driven to seek out all four types of relationship. It’s not enough to have a matesprit, or even a matesprit/kismesis - you’re still ‘single’ in the other categories. 

It’s interesting that trolls are biologically driven to auspisticism. Do you have an auspisticism ‘orientation’, dictating whether you’re the mediator or the mediatee?

The truth about "C2"

What I find very funny is that there are always people who like to pretend not to know and even deceive themselves.

If you looked closely at what goes on between Charles and Sainz on and off the paddock, you wouldn't think they were good friends. At least this has been proven by Pierre. (Pierre is the only close friend Charles admits to being in the paddock)

Unless you don't know about the public work and believe it to be true. Just like Red Bull Racing deal with the relationship between Verstappen and Perez, when they had an embarrassing confrontation outside the paddock, they still had to look like they were get along in harmony.

Apart from Charles, I have no particular affection for any of the other drivers in the paddock. Since I follow Charles, I know why some Charles fans don't like Sainz, but they don't hate Vettel or Eriksen (they get along very well with Charles, and Eriksen writed "Kick ass at Ferrari, win that bloody championship" when Charles went to Ferrari, not to mention the Vettel's helmet message praised Charles' talent and sincerely wished him the best)

But obviously Sainz is not like this. For example, Sainz almost never helps Charles during the race. In qualifying at Monza this year, Charles gave Sainz two tows, but Sainz had no thanks for it. Although some people have poor memory, there are traces of the Internet. While Sainz's mother and friends took to Twitter to shame Charles, we didn't know what those calling themselves C2 were up to. It's completely understandable that Charles' fans would be disgusted by such behavior and would fight back against it. Likewise, if Charles took the initiative to do something similar, it would be normal for Sainz's fans to fight back. But in fact, it all happened because the Sainz family took the initiative to belittle Charles and made remarks against Charles through media interviews, including the fact that Sainz's father repeatedly expressed dissatisfaction with Ferrari and Charles. Sainz absolutely loves throwing his team and teammates under the bus.

I think they did get along well in the beginning, like in 2021. But obviously, the longer they get along, the relationship does not become closer, and even becomes cold (at least we all know that Sainz and Lando have a good relationship, and they are not even in the same team. For the same reason, Vettel is not in the paddock, but Charles is still with him maintain a good relationship)

When you think some fans are toxic, know that not all fans are that way to begin with, everything happens for a reason, and the hate is mutual. At the same time, it is also toxic for some people to ignore this contradiction in order to satisfy their own fandom and gay desires even though they may know the truth.

Sainz received help from Charles, but never thanked Charles, never appeared when Charles needed help, and rarely even offered to congratulate Charles on his success. When Charles helped him, offered to congratulate him. I don't think so anyone goes through this and still thinks they have a good relationship, just like you have such a colleague around you, you are friendly to him, he only accepts your kindness, but he doesn't give you the same kindness.

Finally, the flexibility and double standards some fans have towards different people is disgusting. Just like Charles renewing his contract with Ferrari. Charles is a member of the FDA, his childhood dream has been to win at Ferrari, and the contract extension is a sign of his loyalty. But is it said to be Stockholm by some people? I can only say that people without dreams will never understand that a person has had a dream since he was a child, and has been working hard to realize his dream, and will not give up even if he encounters setbacks. This kind of beautiful character is not possessed by everyone.

Trans people should be welcome in most single sex spaces, but there are a few where being single sex matters AND nothing has to be inclusive of everyone.

Sports should be divided by sex, not gender

Gender is a social construct and biological sex is real and binary. This isnt a hate statement. Sometimes, it DOES matter what your bio sex is. Not everyone has to know, but your doctor probably should.

The current transgender movement is reinforcing gender roles, not even remotely dismantling them. I'm agender because i want to abolish gender roles and gender all together.

The current transgender movement is anti-science. There arent more than two biological sexes, you cannot actually change your sex, human bodies are sexually dimorphic and always have been, testosterone does effect muscle mass, there are downsides to puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones, ALL surgeries are dangerous, including GRS

Sexuality is SEX BASED. I don't believe trans women can be lesbian because lesbian = same sex attracted human female. Vice verse with trans men. Gay people worked for DECADES to get people to recognize that being gay isn't a choice or a "~preference~"

What broke the camels back on the transgender movement for me was all of the double standards and fascist levels of thought and speech control. Making "OP is a terf" comments on posts that have nothing to do with trans people, making blocklists, running scared from words like the LGBT community is a cult. Part of being a well rounded person is being able to see things that you don't agree with without having a breakdown.

Me pointing out misogynistic or homophobic or other toxic behavior doesn't mean I hate the specific person I called out nor do I hate the demographic they come from. Me pointing out toxic behavior comes from my long standing leftist beliefs that bigotry is never okay, even when it's coming from another minority and from a true love of people and wanting a healthier world.

I hate Laenyra. People mainly hype it up to move attention away from Daemon and Laena’s marriage and center their self insert into their relationship .

Yeah it’s ironic that the same people hyping up Laryngitis and saying all those who oppose it are racistare the same people who love dunk on Elia non-stop and say that she was fine with her husband sleeping with Snow Becky because she’s dornish. The same people hyping up Jon’s parents are the same people who dunk on Dettles.

I’ll be the first one to say that I don’t give a damn about Ravioli and Snow Becky, but I’ll admit that it was GRRM’s intention to make them romantic(it’s definitely not supposed to be grooming even if I find the whole situation weird). I’ll even admit that there are plenty of similarities between Dettles and that ship, but you’d have an easier time finding a leprechauns gold than getting those people to admit the same.

Don’t get me started on the Bridgerton fandom. A bunch of ungrateful bigots who keep making demands of Shonda while at the same time degrading her and saying there are “too many Black people” on the show (and then crying when people call them out for being the anti-Black morons they are).

And I get that Masali hasn’t been officially announced as Sophie, and of course she’s not the only possibility, but she’s the only one whose name that has been circulating around that fits the casting call. Her schedule was cleared last year and she’s got no upcoming projects. She’s following multiple members of the cast and multiple members are following her back.

(Nicola, Hannah Dodd, Hannah New, Victor Ali who is suspected to be playing John, as well as one of the hairdressers who does the main casts hair to name a few. Hell, there was even one of the directors following her, but he mysteriously unfollowed her for some reason).

More importantly, no one else has produced another casting call to contradict said casting call or to show that the role she was cast for is a member of the Stirling family.

(I’m not going to get into it, but if you’re “evidence” hinges on Masali and Victor Ali looking alike please go down to Lens Crafters cause they don’t look nothing alike outside of being dark and Black. It’s fucking offensive as fuck to say they do).

And as I said in a previous ask, the Bridgerton team has cast a role with a specific race in mind cause they were looking for an Indian woman to play Kate(which is how some people figured Simone Ashley was playing Kate when most of Kates fancasts were white women👏🏽).

So the fact that you have so many people running around like a chicken with its head cut off claiming it’s impossible for Sophie to be Black, that Sophie should be x race, or just being racist jackasses is disturbing asf. You shouldn’t have to see this bullshit:

Over the past two and a half years, I have amassed a huge backlog of games and extensively catalogued the ones I’ve played. It started out as a way to keep myself sane during the pandemic, but since then it’s basically just become the way I play video games. I’ve recently reached the huge milestone of 200 games played using this system, and to commemorate, I thought a list of “Each Zero Escape character as one of those 200 games” would be fun! Let’s go!

(FYI, I kept a tier list and for this post, I’ve only drawn from games I’ve ranked B, A, or S. So yes, these are all recommendations! I played some of them via itch.io, but all of them are available on Steam)

Ace: Contradiction

An FMV detective game with elegantly simple mechanics: you do exactly what the title says and it’s very satisfying. Special mention goes to the pair of shady businessmen you encounter who totally don’t brainwash, kill, or kidnap people wink wink.

Snake: Dicey Dungeons

This is almost entirely based on Light’s codename meaning “snake eyes,” but it was between this and that game you play by blinking so this seemed like the more appropriate choice. A cute and cheeky roguelike deckbuilder played by rolling and assigning dice. The fact that its gameplay is built around basic arithmetic gives me 999 vibes in general!

Santa: Tell Me Why

A choice-consequence adventure game from the makers of the first two Life Is Strange games (LIS2 my beloved, don’t @ me). Two siblings who can communicate telepathically revisit their childhood home and the events leading up to their mother’s death. One of the siblings is a trans man so if you are as Correct about Aoi as I am you know where I’m coming from.

Clover: Chicory: A Colorful Tale

The game where the world is a blank coloring book and you get to fill in the lines. Tells a lovely and relatable story about art, burnout, impostor syndrome and mentorship, although the main reason I’m assigning this to Clover is because it’s just plain adorable. The relationship between Pizza and Chicory also reminds me of her and Alice.

Junpei: Lamplight City

Perhaps aligned more with ZTD Junpei than any other iteration, this is a steampunk point-and-click about a disgraced detective who is haunted by his late partner and can’t rest until he’s avenged his death. The best part of this game is the protagonist’s awesome wife, who, unlike Akane, will actually help you with puzzles sometimes.

Akane: Elsinore

You play as Ophelia. You are stuck in a time loop and must find a way to save yourself and manufacture a happier ending to the tragedy of Hamlet. This is basically tied with Celeste for the title of my favorite video game of all time, and I was delighted to find parallels between it and Akane’s story.

Seven: The Darkside Detective

I love detective games so I had a wealth to choose from when it came to the cop character. I ended up going with this game, a standard point-and-click that is a detective game in name and theming only but is still a lot of fun. A pastiche of Twin Peaks and X-Files with some of the funniest writing I’ve ever seen in a video game, it captures Seven’s zaniness and willingness to believe in the supernatural.

Lotus: Beglitched

A glitzy and girly game full of computer lingo and in-jokes that go over my head. Thankfully you don’t actually need to know a lick of code to enjoy it because the hacking minigames all take the form of really unique and strategic battles.

Kubota: Underhero

An RPG with one of the most wonderfully convoluted premises ever. Put simply, you’re a villain’s henchman who must play double agent when you’re magically chosen to be the next great hero. Kubota certainly doesn’t fit the “secret hero” angle, but a whole game about an underling seemed appropriate.

Sigma: Milkmaid of the Milky Way

A point-and-click (can you tell I love those?) in which a dairy farmer’s favorite cow is abducted by aliens and she must sneak onto the spacecraft to rescue it. Now, that absolutely delightful premise could work with just about any VLR character; I don’t want to spoil the game, but something else does happen that rings very close to Sigma’s story specifically.

Phi: Downwell

I really expected Phi to get a platformer, with all her soaring and kicking! Downwell is kind of a platformer, I guess, although really it’s more of a free-fall simulator and most of the things you land on die. You can either shoot enemies with your “gunboots” or step on them to kill them - killing things with your feet, very Phi.

Alice: Paradise Killer

A quirky open-world detective game where everyone is impractically hot. I’ve truly never felt more like a detective than I did while playing this game, but you can’t talk about it without talking about the style. The world is bizarre, the music is all vaporwave, and again. You, the investigator, are improbably sexy, and so is every suspect you interview.

Dio: Cult of the Lamb

The cute and cozy roguelike where you start your own cult and smite nonbelievers. I feel like I don’t really need to describe this one further, y’all know it already.

Luna: Cloud Gardens

An art/puzzle game about helping plants reclaim an abandoned, decaying urban environment. Has both a story mode which I completed, and a sandbox mode I didn’t try in which you can just grow gardens to your heart’s content.

Quark: Carto

A really cute puzzle game where you manipulate the very ground you stand on using a map. The story is about a little girl trying to find her grandmother, so it’s very Quark in both aesthetic and story.

Kyle: Hades

The mythological roguelike about hating your dad a whole lot. I don’t feel like I need to explain this one further, either, as everyone has talked about it at length including me on this very blog, but I’ll have you know that I’ve played it for hundreds of hours and it’s solidly my third favorite video game of all time.

Carlos: The Rewinder

This is the most recent game I’ve played; I haven’t finished it yet and I can’t even say for sure that it will be top-tier in the rankings, but I’m really liking it so far and since I wanted a puzzle game about time manipulation for Carlos it was between this and Braid. And as far as I know, The Rewinder doesn’t have a creator with the absolutely rancid vibes of Jonathan Blow.

Sean: 2064: Read Only Memories

A visual novel where you solve a mystery in a cyberpunk world with the help of the world’s first fully sentient AI. The AI is a precious baby baby baby; if you love Sean, you will love Turing.

Delta: Evergate

A gorgeous puzzle platformer about the afterlife and a fraught sibling relationship that transcends time. I loved this game so much that I 100-percented all the collectibles and time trials, which is something I never do. Made me want to call my brother.

Eric: Boyfriend Dungeon

Of course, my much maligned fave gets paired with a game that also gets a lot of undue hate but nonetheless has my entire heart. It’s a dating sim for all of the thirsty simps out there that’s also a roguelike about literally attacking your inner demons and fears with crazy impractical weapons. This choice has nothing to do with a certain Boyfriend Dungeon character who gives all Erics a bad name.

Mira: Carrion

Going through all these games I was surprised that this was the only real “play as the villain” power fantasy on the list. You might have heard of this one described as a reverse horror movie; you play as a biological weapon, or an alien, or something, that has escaped containment and it’s just about eating scientists and soldiers in an explosion of pixelly gore.

Diana: There Is No Game: Wrong Dimension

I won’t be all coy like every other reviewer: this is a video game, a point-and-click about a sentient computer program who really does not want you to use it. It’s really funny and full of meta-references, but the reason I chose it for Diana is because this game is actually a tragic love story not unlike SigDi. I’m not joking about that.

And there you have it, twenty-two great games, one for each Zero Escape character. This is just a silly post but, sincerely, check some of them out if they sound interesting to you!

It's supposed to get better. I've seen it time and time again, and all it does is annoy me .

When am I ALLOWED to get better? When is it enough? When do I stop punishing myself for things that happened almost a year ago? When do I get to be happy without feeling like shit after? When do I get to eat and not worry about weather or not your treating yourself right? When do I get to feel human?

I'm so sick and tired of having little to no motivation. I'm tired of falling asleep with cut and bruised thighs, even if it's self inflicted. I'm tired of being and feeling powerless and useless. I'm tired of feeling like an emotional sack of shit. I'm so tired of feeling like I don't matter. I'm so sick and tired of feeling disgusting in my own body and mind.

What I've done and said to you cycle around in my head all day. What you've said and done to me cycle with it. Every single day I relive the moment when I first lost control. Everyday I feel guilt when I remember you saying that you'd feel bad for me if I didn't kill myself. Every fucking day, I'm forced to go back to that room that you almost died in. It doesn't stop. Sometimes the cycle will pause, but always starts again. Sleep is my only escape.

I still cry for you and what you went through. It tears apart my heart to know I could have and should have done so much better. I hyperventilate over the fact that I'll never be able to get back what I lost when you ended our relationship.

I knew we were toxic together. But we thought in the end everything would be fine. You and I overlooked every red flag because of it. Instead of solving our issues, we ignored them. We only talked about how we could have avoided things after a breakdown. We never told each other what was really wrong until after we blew things to pieces.

You say you knew we wouldn't last long, but I trusted you when you made promises. I believed you when you said I'd be yours forever. I trusted you when you said we'd truly be together one way. I was naive and stupid, but I still feel like you led me on. I also feel bad for thinking it, and I'm angry with myself because you felt like you had to protect me from the reality of what was happening.

I know I hurt you, and that what you did back, I deserved. But the time you called the cops on me, the time you lied to my mother... I can't over look those. You trust me with so many things, yet I can't trust you. It's always double standards with you. You'll tell me to be safe, but at the same time be hurting yourself every night. I know it's not your fault. I know you have mental health issues. But still upsets me. You have such low standards for yourself.

It makes me feel like crap that I can't help you. That I can't fix your problems.

I hate how you've moved on, while I'm still stuck here in this never ending loop. I want it stop, but the only way to do that is to end my life. I know you don't care weather I'm alive or not. You've said that to me directly. But if you don't care, why do we still talk? Why do you still want to know how im doing? You say so many things that contradict over things you've said. I know you don't mean to be, but your so goddamn confusing.

All that said, I'm still in love with you. Unlike you, I ment it when I said I'd love you forever. But God, I wish I didn't love you. It hurts to love you.

Concluding AF AMER 112A & Abby

As we end the quarter I would like to discuss a few things, beginning with the film “Abby.” At the time of the assigned viewing and discussion in the lecture of “Abby” I was in the middle of wrapping up my final for the course in which I wrote an essay. My essay analyzed an older film “The Love Wanga” and a more recent film “The Girl with All the Gifts.” As a woman of color I felt a strong inclination to examine the role of Black women in horror through comparing and contrasting the roles they portrayed in this genre. When we discussed “Abby” I wish I would have viewed the film sooner rather than later so that I could include it in my analysis because of the relation to Black women roles in horror.

During my research for secondary sources to support my analysis, I saw “Abby” mentioned a few times. I believe that this is due to the fact that this film portrays black femininity as monstrous and demonstrates a stereotype seen in older films. As Professor Due clarified, this film is from the blaxploitation era and made for black audiences. However, similar to The Love Wanga, although it was progressive in a sense, there are a few things that could have been improved or avoided overall. For example, the opening scene in which Nigerian culture is brought up is portrayed with ignorance similar to The Love Wanga in which voodoo is addressed with ignorance. Pinning christianity against west African beliefs is the common theme in both films that is dismissing the african culture. This is also demonstrated when Abby is “saved” from the possession through religion and a gathering with the reverend and pastor.

Furthermore, in terms of Black women in horror, “Abby” who is possessed by a sex demon is portrayed negatively. Abby’s sexual behaviors are seen as abnormal behavior, especially because her family is religious and her husband is a pastor. The monstrous feminine in this film is Abby’s sexuality. I find this to be upsetting because as a woman, there is a double-standard when it comes to sexual conduct. All my life growing up in a Latino household, I have been told to not “make myself available for men” and to preserve my virginity, but the men are told the opposite. Men are told to “be men” and pursue women. However, when one really analyzes these standards contradict themselves. How are men supposed to be with women, if those women are told to wait till marriage? In this case where are the women that these young boys are being told to pursue? I have seen this time and time again and it creates negative consequences. Therefore to see a film in which the woman is seen as monstrous for this reason hits close to home. I do see how in one major perspective she was cheating on her husband, but on the other hand there was no sympathy for her as a woman.

All in all, this would have been a great film to include in my essay, but I’m glad I am able to discuss it here in my blog post. I have enjoyed this course very much and all the knowledge I have gained. I now view horror in a different light and can share that I don’t feel as scared when viewing horror films. This is all thanks to Professor Due and the wonderful material she brings to this course. Thank you for an amazing quarter Professor! Exploring the internet-verse is fun, frustrating and confusing. Even in this tiny corner of audiophile stuff many people have carved out small kingdoms of ideas. Often those are in contradiction with many others.

Ah the Wilderness!

I was playing those A&M Audiophile Series discs I have. The sampler is particularly interesting. It has three tracks from Super Tramp, two from Cat Stevens, and one each from Gino Vannelli, Styx, and Chuck Mangione (more on him later). The sampler is rather rare as it was not supposed to be sold, it was for store demos. I got one anyway. If the cover was in good shape it would command lots of $$$.

It was the early 80s droogs when big hair was in. My wife has the original Gino Vannelli Album from which the sample cut was copied. Well played but cared about. Gino on the cover had magnificent hair. We compared the old copy played on her department store stereo back in the day to the fancy one. Her old issue was pretty good with the only significant thing being it was compressed. Not too much but enough to stand out in the comparison. There is also a lot of good to be said about micro-line styli that can find unworn groove surfaces. The audiophile mix was cleaner and far less compressed if any at all. Both pretty good. Big nostalgia going.

Now we hit a minor diversion. I googled A&M audiophile and there were lots of opinions. The Steve Hoffman site forum generally liked them. But I found a different opinion here:

These guys slag fancy "audiophile" issues. ( Imagine saying the word audiophile with a crinkled up nose and sneer) Don't like the A&M A-Phile and don't talk about MOFI.

They have a different take where they search out the best pressings of the original commercial release. (You know the ones compressed to sound good on AM Radio). It is true that a fresh stamper is better than a later generation one. If you get an early pressing off of a fresh stamper it is very nice, BUT...

They will search through as many copies of a given album as they can find and compare, rank and price accordingly. They are a store after all. I just want them to cool their jets a bit. Impressive they get so many copies actually.

They have their niche and there are some wonderful original albums for sale there. A genuine Mercury Living Presence for $350 USD.

My quibble with them is of course they are pushing POP releases with all the sins we know those have. To each their own.

One of the albums they liked was Chuck Mangione "The Children of Sanchez". I have that one. It is a collection of music composed for a film. It has impressive sound. A double vinyl album. I really like the first cut which has amazing sound. The rest is quite fine too. When I say amazing I mean it. Big eyes, open mouth amazing. Mr Mangione was big in the 70s to 80s as a POP/Jazz guy. He played Flugelhorn.

Quoting the "Better Records" geeks: "What’s unusual about this album -- shocking really -- is how meaty the bottom end is. I don’t know of a pop jazz recording with beefier, more articulate or weightier bass."

I agree. Big horns deep Bass the word is impact.

I have no idea if my copy is better or worse by their standards I bought it new on a whim when horn playing artists were popular. I think it is a good copy.

It is interesting how the ARC Cl60 handled it. Yes the Bass is deep, but I notice less whack. The Franken-amp has lots of Whack. The ARC compensated for that with that lovely texture it gives drums. I imagine there is a fair bit of feedback distortion down low which presents as texture. It is different.

I bet I could make a killer arrangement by making a bi-amp system with the Franken-amp down low and the ARC up high. Err probably not. Active cross-overs are a bitch and the Franken-amp has great mid-range. When spring comes it goes back in the stack. The ARC is a good space heater.

You can debate how one copy of an album is better or worse than another. It is a moot issue if you just want the music and this is what you can get. The A&M audiophile issues were made with more care than the mass pressings. Likely that is enough. And they are old now too. Another take is that A&M made pretty good recordings in general.

If Mofi has an album with the music you want feel free to buy it. Old stuff is a crap shoot, or just very expensive. Funny how that applies to many things in this hobby.

I discovered Agnieszka Chylińska many years ago while researching for Poland for a Eurovision fan contest, and fell in love with her powerful and raw voice. Although she has a lot of great songs, I still think I like this one best for how amazing her voice is in it, so much emotion poured into the words.

One of those pieces of art that exposes all the contradictions and double standards of womanhood. Another song from my favorite Prāta Vētra album. This one is a beautiful song that always gives me a sense of peace. The title translates to "where the giant mountains seem small" and I certainly always wish for such a place. (Metaphorically, of course. I may be from a very flat place but I can appreciate actual mountains!)

Košieľočka - Hrdza

Something about the music in this absolutely captivates me. I love this song. It's one of those that I can and do listen to over and over and over on repeat. The folk violin mixed with electric guitar--one of my favorite things in the world is genre mixing like this. And the vocal harmonies are so beautiful. Between how much I love this song and Solovey by Go_A, I'm almost convinced I was abandoned by some peasant boy I loved in a past life...

Kalyna - Go_A

Speaking of Go_A, here's an incredible song by them, which they released in 2022 with all the funds from it going to Ukraine. Musically, the contrast between the flute and the beat is so good, and Kateryna's voice is flawless as always. The section that goes "Жаль, жаль, жаль, жаль/Жалюшенькі-жаль мою" is my favorite, I think because it has this driving rhythm to it, as well as deep emotion in Kateryna's voice.

what i think genshin boys type would be... y'all this is rushed asf and was written in like 10 mins on a bus so don’t think this chicken-scratch even matches  my actual writing, I was the English valedictorian after all.

Xiao (my beloved emo yaksha)

I personally think he doesn’t give a shit how you look, the man is 2000+ years old he’s above that, I think its more personality for him. someone quiet, calm and preferably not clingy is all he wants, someone he can bask in the presence of without having them talking and bothering him 24/7 so he is still able to attend to his duties as a yaksha (same here bestie)

Albedo (my beloved mad scientist)

He also isn’t one to care about looks, he wants someone smart, calm, quiet and confident. I think smarts is probably the biggest factor he wants someone to ramble about alchemy and have them understand and get into deep conversation with and maybe even double as his lab partner. I don’t see him being able to deal with an airhead considering he doesn’t have the greatest attention span.

Scaramouche (Will he do the fandango?)

He isn’t picky about looks but you HAVE to be shorter than him, he loves being taller than you it makes him feel powerful. as for personality I think he would like someone that is either a really smart sadist like him or a masochistic airhead that he can use to his liking.

Looks don’t matter but he’d prefer if you were shorter so he could tease the living shit out of you for it (i know from experience), as for personality and other shit you better be smart otherwise he probably won’t even pay you any attention, as for books it would be easy to win him over if you were also a bookworm but if not it doesn’t matter I guess you just have to be good at pulling pranks.

Chongyun (the Hotter Jack Frost)

TBH I think he would be grateful for anyone to be looking at him romantically...or sexually. I’m sorry but this mans ego is so low from Xingqiu’s pranks that it doesn’t matter if your looks are akin to a deformed hillichurl and your an absolute airhead he would love you no matter what. (i bet your really pretty/handsome tho)

OK so i originally wrote this differently but someone was kind enough to point out a few things in his voice lines and story that contradict what my dumb ass wrote and i also sorta hated the old nickname i gave him so heres the edited version:

contextualizing lwj’s coming to terms with his feelings subplot!

i wanna talk about the role of confucianism in this subplot because i think it’s something some western fans might not pick up on. basically, the sociopolitical climate of confucianism in his character arc, and a little bit about his interaction with the public image theme.

disclaimer: i’m not chinese but i do have a double minor in chinese and asian studies and have written a few papers on confucianism.

we’re gonna be talking about the novel bc i feel its a little more in-depth and nuanced than lwj’s “what is black, what is white” monologue in cql. namely the tension and misunderstanding in wwx’s first life and how lwj got his scars. i feel like it’s pretty well accepted that wwx made lwj reconsider his world view, so i’m just gonna expand on it. also i want to point out it's pretty unspoken in most of the text, but lwj is also affected by/used to explore the public image themes, as his image the is ideal confucian scholar.

confucianism is centered around the ideas of how to behave “good” in sociopolitical contexts. basically it boils down to a belief system on how society should be run. if everyone follows confucian beliefs, you will have an ideal society. the main text is the Analects, which you can read here. it’s been around for a few thousand years (like around 200 BCE ish), had a huge revival in the tang dynasty (618-907 CE). it was put on imperial exams, the emperor’s cabinet had confucian scholars, etc. this is just to say confucian values are important to historic society, especially upper-class scholars, which seems to be a role cultivators commonly fill in xianxia. here are some basic tenants:

being a gentleman/scholar/superior man (君子 jūn zǐ) : partly being learned in the arts, literature, music, poetry, etc., mostly behaving righteously and dutifully.

filial piety: usually described as obedience. it's not simply obeying everything elders tell you, it includes doing it with reverence and thankfulness for their sacrifices for you.

leading by example: if leaders/the government is righteous, the people will follow. lwj has his flock of juniors that are all strong cultivators and the lan sect is just generally known for being moral and good.

rites/rituals: a focus on politeness and holding proper ceremonies, sacrifices, and funerals

speech: there’s some great meta about the register he speaks in here, i just want to touch on think carefully before you speak, only speak sincerely, etc.

tldr; lwj is THE perfect gentleman (even his title contains the character suffix 君 -jūn, like lxc. which, while this character is not uncommon for cultivator titles, it wasn’t chosen carelessly either. also not to be confused with 尊 -zūn). seriously, look at almost all of book 10 and you'll see don't do/consume in excess, don't talk during meals, sit only when your mat is straight, etc.

okay, so Why is understanding his feelings for wwx so troublesome?

1.2 "They are few who, being filial and fraternal, are fond of offending against their superiors. There have been none, who, not liking to offend against their superiors, have been fond of stirring up confusion... Filial piety and fraternal submission! - are they not the root of all benevolent actions?"

in other words, people who are filial will never create political tension. so like, morally, wwx should be considered horrible person! he’s not only snubbed the jiang sect. he was a head disciple who undoubtedly had younger students looking up to him. and then he goes and stirs up some huge political issues! he is now a bad role model for the people below him and disrespected the people above him. lwj has an entire image to uphold, he has poured his entire life into following these rules and beliefs, and then wwx comes along. would continuing to be in wwx's life taint lwj? there are some contradicting teachings in regards to interacting with wwx:

15.4: "Do not take counsel with those who follow a different Way"

15.28: "When the multitude hates a person, you must examine them and judge for yourself. The same holds true for someone whom the multitude love."

15.36 "When it comes to being Good, defer to no one, not even your teacher."

this is part of the reason lwj had so much trouble accepting his feelings. he didn’t know how to handle this situation, making him appear distant during/directly after sunshot. if he judges wwx's intentions to be pure, it's then not wrong to be friendly with him. but wwx still is morally wrong by society's standards. now, lwj has to not only figure out his feelings, but also reconcile this with how he still thinks wwx is Not a bad person, despite everything. what if he does get "tainted" by wwx? will it hurt the reputation of his sect? that would be un-filial, right? he spent his whole life memorizing rules that are probably extremely similar to sections in the Analects, and now these mixed messages (coupled with the relatable gay panic) are overwhelming.

onto the next! there’s something unspoken in the scene where wwx discovers why lwj has the whip scars. as other posts have mentioned, lwj taking wwx back to the burial mounds and nursing him is high treason. however, this action is also extremely un-filial. also his entire image is built around being a perfect gentleman, if this were to get out to the public he would lose absolutely everything. he would be just as irreparable as wwx.

“I was worried if those from another sect found you first, WangJi would be considered your accomplice. The best scenario was his name being forever tainted, and the worst was his life being taken away right then. Thus, along with Uncle, we chose thirty three seniors who had always thought highly of WangJi... ”

there’s no way lwj didn’t know what would happen if he did this. obviously as lxc says, if this got out, he would lose basically his entire face. and even though lxc didn’t mention this, it would definitely lose a lot of face for the lan sect as well since lwj is so prominent. the decision about what elders to bring is also notable.

“...As if he knew all along he would be discovered by us, he said that there was nothing to explain, that this was it. Growing up, he had never talked back to Uncle, not even once. But for you, not only did WangJi talk back to him, he even met with his sword the cultivators from the Gusu Lan sect...”

so yeah, he obviously knew they would come for him and what the consequences would be. and he still talked back! that’s already not a good look for the lan sect. but attacking them? totally unforgivable! lwj gives up how he was raised and the importance of filial piety, what he has held on to until this major plot event. since it's basically the biggest "fuck you" to his uncle and his clan, this was not a decision he made lightly. lwj shows them he cares more about wwx and His Own ideas of right and wrong than the sect’s or society’s.

Wei WuXian dug his hands into his hair, “...I-I didn’t know... I really...”

when was the last time wwx was at a loss for words? wwx spends a few paragraphs after this lamenting how he hurt lwj, but he's not unaware of the gravity of what lwj did. it's an underlying assumption from being raised in the culture. i would argue his first instinct is "oh god he gave up what for me?" since those lamenting paragraphs are after lxc finishes speaking.

"But he said... that he could not say with certainty whether what you did was right or wrong..."

this is something thrown around a lot in the Analects, that not even confucius can say for sure what is right or wrong. what better way to show lwj is still a perfect confucian than have him paraphrase confucius himself?

“...WangJi was a model for the disciples when he was young, and a prominent cultivator when he grew up. In his whole life he had been honest and righteous and immaculate--you were the only mistake he made!”

here’s the confirmation that the world and even his family thinks of him as a perfect gentleman, the top tier of society, and it was all thrown away for wwx. this is just so heavy. the mistake thing? thats not only because lwj is fraternizing with an enemy. lxc and the rest of the sect who knew are terrified this will forever corrupt lwj personally, not just publicly. lwj was so devoted to believing this was the right thing to do he offered up everything he had. the gravity of this decision is insane. it’s very obvious that he loves wwx, it’s just that he struggles a lot internally to accept everything that is happening.

as for helping wwx leave after the massacre, is this gentleman-ly of lwj? was it actually in-line with his image? is it more honorable to save someone who is dying, at the cost of your own health, than to look away? isn't looking away a form of resentment? i wasn't able to find a specific passage about bystander-ness, but personally i think it qualifies as "bad intentions." there is also this passage for what it's worth, originally it was about government suppression:

12.19: "...What do you say to killing the unprincipled for the good of the principled?" Confucius replied, "...why should you use killing at all?..."

lwj is always more actions than words, and he was not fucking around. his core beliefs really haven't changed, and remain very strong throughout his life. he is still righteous enough to accept his punishment, graceful enough to search for wwx's body since there was no one else to do the funeral rites (10.22/10.15), caring enough to take in a-yuan, upright enough to still spend his years going where the chaos is.

just with this one action, the audience knows he has come to terms with realizing that authority isn't always just, and neither is the public opinion/opinion of other gentlemen. he has reconciled. this is him standing for what he believes is right. this is his devotion. this is his own choice. just. poetic cinema...

bro i been thinking abt that (the one up there that one great post big fan) post theorizing that dennis is meant to be a twist on the “jim halpert” kind of a leading man thats standard on sitcoms. and how all the characters are like that yanno? historically successful, funny, and loved tv tropes put into an unforgiving and realistic world? like it’s even funnier when you think about how it’s almost as if the gang (ESP Den) /knows/ that they should be getting rewarded for all their antics and scheming. that’s what happens on tv. on tv jim knew from day one that he was the man for pam, he /knew/ he’d get her and (so) he /did/! he didn’t even have to try!! but in philly dennis “knows” that he’s the man for (caylee, mac, literally anyone) but it comes off as creepy not charming thus hes often rejected and humiliated.

dee is the female voice of reason (yeah ik the origin of kaitlins dee shut up let me talk), and yet her schemes and beliefs are just as titled as the boys. now look at this: lisa simpsons job wasnt to actually convince her dad or brother that their idea was dangerous. lisa’s job was to call attention to just how fucking stupid the male leads r. plus she’s a chick and implicit lesbo so she doubles as a punching bag. just like dee. cept dee isn’t super smart or musically inclined, the only thing she really has going for her is the gang. and the fact that she’s probably the best off in terms of not destroying her own life. which lets her have this unearned sense of superiority similar to dennis’ because she ~knows~ that she’s the voice of reason. what she doesn’t know is why even after she’s proven that that’s not who she WANTS to be anymore the guys still refuse to treat her like a real member of the gang even though she so obviously is. even tho the guys know she’s just as good (bad) as they are. lisa simpson, the chick from seinfeld, and lois griffin are all fine and good and are funny because deep down lois CHOSE to marry peter, lisa explicitly LOVES her family DESPITE their flaws. but dee is UNLOVED. there’s no point in her being there other than to contradict, not cos she necessarily wants to but the gang actively avoids giving her attention for anything else. so now you’ve got the voice of reason trope desperately trying to prove their own unreasonableness in an attempt to be liked. the boys resist. she acts up. they give her enough of a nod for her to stay for another drink. meanwhile the gang is getting into increasingly stupid and dangerous schemes because the voice of reason prefers not being shit on. almost like how a real person would react to being forced into that position. huh.

charlie and mac r sort of make up one; they’re the gang (ik ik) they’re dennis’ gang. the chandler and the other one. the “leading mans” sidekicks who are happy to go along with whatever plan, happy to let him get the girl, happy to remind him of how perfect he is when he’s down. (which obviously mac and charlie are NOT happy about ANY of that and HATE that dennis treats them like they are.) It’s also maybe important to note that usually the “leader” of the group is the one who brought the three friends together. dennis just crashed mac and charlie’s twosome one day and never left. mac and charlie support dennis but only out of annoyance or in macs case sometimes something deeper. either way, it’s out of trope. really they shouldn’t be able to function without dennis telling them how to. but at this point it seems like they’re better off without him around.

but charlie is also his own trope. Cause the thing is…charlie works as a lovable goofball, the slob with a heart of gold, socially awkward sure but deep down he wouldn’t hurt a fly. except. he would hurt a fly. he is a self-proclaimed “rat-basher”, hes the only character to explicitly say the n word, he stalks and assaults the waitress (her trope is p obvious. perfect girl that the loser drools over, she rejects him.) to the point of her actually breaking and agreeing to HAVE HIS KID (need a whole new post abt those beans jfc)

NOW. i ask you…what usually happens in tv shows with the charlie/waitress dynamic? typically i’d say that throughout the course of the show the audience realizes that the supposed “perfect girl” is actually a bitch and that it’s actually the unassuming, more natural looking, lead girl who should get together with the charlie character. depending on the show, maybe she’s the girl who’s been helping him chase his supposed dream girl. or she’s the girl who is, up until the big reveal, his lesbian-coded best friend who is SICK of hearing about this girl. or maybe shes just always been there, but he’s never considered her because they’ve been friends for so long, they’ve known each other since they were kids, maybe she isnt even on the table and she’s dating his friend, or she was dating his friend, or maybe…because she’s the sister of his friend. his friends TWIN sister. see where i’m going with this? it’s dee. dee and charlie are the b couple. the dwight and angela. they’re the obvious couple.maybe you didn’t see it at first but once it’s suggested you can’t unsee it. and when they DO get together. it’s like they always were. they’re the caring, devoted, consistent couple that the audience can lean on when things get messy in the other characters relationships. and yet. dee and charlie already DID get together. and apparently they hated it. hated it so much that charlie (the poor guy trope) wanted to stop and dee (girl next door trope) FORCES him to finish. not to mention neither of them seem all that interested in a caring consistent relationship. at least not with each other. why would they be?

and what would a B couple be without an A couple? but how do you even go about satirizing an A couple? they’re meant to stay in a “will they won’t they” for at least five seasons, and when they inevitably do get together it’s full of cheating and lying and breaks. cause thats what makes an A couple interesting to watch. they’re “meant to be” and yet still have to work through the issues that all relationships face. and if it’s a sitcom this is usually funny because all the audience and characters have ever wanted was for the A couple to be official, but now that they are there’s somehow even MORE conflict within the show. sound like anyone? macdennis. but dennis (leading man) wasn’t prepared for a SECOND leading MAN. no one ever told him he was going to be expected to share the limelight. he assumed he’d meet his girl and he would know and so would she and then she’d happily stand behind him forever. not next to him. she certainly wouldn’t ever try and step IN FRONT OF DENNIS. like mac does. now remember that none of the characters, except possibly dee, know that they are filling out a trope. but dennis is the golden god. of course he knows. and that is why he is or was or whatever actively ensuring that he and mac would never be together in a way that could potentially over shadow denniss “guaranteed” leading lady, and more importantly dennis. and even more important. leading men. are not. and have never. been gay. (debatable but i digress)

so a couple b couple who cares? i cares. cause taylor swift doesn’t rape the guy at the end of “You Belong With Me”. b couples exist as a more palatable A couple. meant to be without the drama. so this is extremely out of trope for chardee. yk what ELSE is out of trope? macs coming out. yeah we’ve all touched on how fucked that must’ve felt from dens pov but here’s the thing. by coming out, mac was able to confirm that the A couple, in fact, WILL. and most likely already HAVE. but he did this alone. he and dennis didn’t come out together, mac doesn’t think about dennis at all in find his pride, mac being gay is his. and that leaves dennis with…the knowledge that he and mac ARE the A couple. not only that, but apparently mac can satisfy that trope all by himself. macs outness is obnoxious. it’s like he’s bragging about it. showing it off. it’s how everything was, but. worse. he doesn’t even need anyone to do the annoying A couple stuff, the parade around, the delusion that no one could have possibly known. he doesn’t need dennis. but it’s pretty clear that at least some part of mac still WANTS dennis. and was expecting dennis to too. but that’s not real life. imagine you’re in a “will they won’t they” for DECADES and then, out of nowhere, ur partner says “yeah no we will.” and everyone believes them. they don’t even need to spare a glance at you because they’ve always kinda known and now thanks to “your other half” they always will know for sure. no matter what you do. now there’s an expectation.

and (full circle u guys) dennis’ trope doesn’t usually call for meeting expectations. he’s attractive and charming, he’s supposed to be able to coast until he looks up and realizes he gs everything he ever wanted. but now he’s 44. and he has everything he never wanted. his abusive (not)father is best friends and the father of? HIS highschool best friend, his other best friend is an asshole who is somehow an asshole abt: being gay, dennis being gay, being gay for dennis, dennis not validating that when he expected him to. and his sister, who has been firmly planted against him since they were kids. hes starving and he’s a legit alcoholic, the gross kind, and all he’s ever done is get a diagnosis that makes his friends treat him weird and abandon his son who is named after a stranger to everyone. and i’ll prolly make a king post abt it but dennis has been showing subtle signs of edging towards (another) extreme breaking point and idk what it’s abt (fingers crossed mac uwu ihatemyself )but i’m just saying that dennis’ mentality has kind of always directed the group in a direct way (whether dynamics, psyche, finances, lives, time, etc) so that’s innerestin

and so now i say the most cracked out part of the post. this theory is giving me untapped amounts of hope that the only way the show can end is with the gang finally settling and finding happiness or they all commit group suicide. and idk abt u but those are the only two endings i’m interested in seeing.
