I just want to get this out but I am getting tired of people complaining about Live action Katara's lack of rage in the show. Especially because now, because it is missing from the LA show, there is a general trend of people that were annoyed with her behavior before now are defending it being part of her character. And before people think I am hating on them, no. I am not against people defending her rage, as I liked it a lot growing up and watching the show causally just as the next person. Katara was one of my favorite character of being a kind person while also taking names and kicking butt, she was that awesome. So more defense for her the better. Hell, I would say from just the interviews I have seen of Kiawentiio, she has - to me - the Katara sass and I am living for it.
What I am hating on is that the Live action Katara is getting ragged on for a lot of reasons - some valid, but other are (in my opinion) surface level stupid and not knowing of what actually might have been going on during the filming of season and probably the mindset that caused her character to be deflated. Because there is a lot to consider as to why it had to be condensed either for conveniences sake or - in my personal opinion - was done on purpose by two individuals that have a track records of curving that behavior in Katara to their desire.
Also: DON'T use this as an excuse to attack the actress! She is doing her best and giving her all! She is doing her job and any slander on her will be instantly blocked! I will not take any slander on her or any of the actors!
Also, mid spoilers so read at your own risk near the bottom
First thing we should consider: the amount of episodes. Yes, I am aware of the telling and not showing arguments that are being flown around. I get it. Normally, I am one of the biggest supporters that this show needed time to breath and let be to show than telling. If it had more time to breath, Katara's rage might have been more visible and we could have had more time for her arc to improve. And this is not to say that they could not have been able to do it, but I will say that this show NEEDED more than 8 episodes to be able to get as much in (To be clear, there are some shows that this works for - Amazon's Reacher and Legend of Zorro have short seasons and formatted for hour long content. But it makes sense for those shows because they are working within parameters of their medium and are newer (both are adaptions of older stuff but still) shows that can play around with the format better). For as ambitious as this project is, it has a lot to condense. At least that it is a show and not a movie, but still. Let's not forget that it could have been so much worst if it was a movie.
Now some people will say, "Well if they were good enough writers then they could have done more to show than tell," which fair. I will admit that there are infinite number of ways that they could handled some of the topics: such as Sokka's sexism and Katara's rage that everyone is missing. But with the landscape of media as is where you would be damned if you do damned if you don't if you so much as talk about some sensitive topic and you could be canceled for it instantly! Which leads me to the next point!
Second thing to consider: Multiple season renewal was never confirmed prior. Yes, we can all complain that the shows pacing was out of place. Yes, they cut some filler. And yes, it feels like we are getting too much of the world building through talking and now showing. But can you really blame them? To most people, if you saw the reaction of the cast before the news came out, you can see they were saddened by the fact they thought would not get a season 2. They changed their tune when season 2 and 3 was confirmed, and honestly happy for them. But again, that confirms to me that the writing had failed mostly because if they were never going to get their chance, might as well go all out. And with how easy shows can get picked up and canceled, I can see they needed to try and cram it in.
Which also plays into Katara's rage - they did not know if there was going to be a chance for her to grow and get bending abilities or go through her arc as steady as the animated. Again, I am not saying losing it was good, but that we need consider that if they were not going to get another season, they had to progress faster than usual. (Side note, while I like this show, Amazon's Hazbin Hotel has the same problem. We are steam rolling through what could be slow progression and change but can't slow because of episode constriction and no time to sit and allow the show to progress because it is so easy to drop the show for the studios, might as well end it on a note that at least can feel like it was it's own story.)
Speaking of studios, that would be my next point as well: studio and producer control. While I know directors can have a say in it, we should not forget about the studio that is allowing them to make this show in the first place and what they are asking for. As I keep saying, we don't know about what their restrictions are or if they can have more than a certain amount of episodes, and maybe that is a mandate of Netflix or something else, we as the audience don't know. We don't know what happens on set or behind the filming outside of glimpses and interviews, so for all we know, there was some changes to the script or teleplay to make it seem like they needed to cut Katara's rage to make her more meek. Which if this was the whole show, fine, that is a choice but not one I will have to like. But when watching the 3rd and 4th episodes, seeing Katara being a teenage girl and angry for once and even more open about her emotions was possible. Hell, it was the only times she was allowed to snap. And guess what people: it was because of the writing this time. That feminine rage you all wanted - while faint - was there. So clearly Netflix is not solely at fault - they have many mistakes but writing is not one of them.
But it is when you look who wrote what and where and what they were going for that - to me - puts EVERYTHING into place!
Final point: the original creators being brought on.
This might seem weird because one would think having the creators on the original show should be not as bad. The creators of the show is watching to make sure that the show is just right and that the characters feel the same or at least some of the story beats feel similar enough to enjoy. Why would them being on the set cause issues with the pacing and writing?
To a casual fan, yeah that makes sense. But to those that have been in the fandom, have see what they do post cannon to ALL of the characters - especially how they treat Katara in Legend of Korra - then anyone watching might have realized that that should have been a warning sign. Especially with how they would have wanted to depict the characters. And this is also the reason I think Katara's rage is gone: I think they wanted to make her like the comics version of her being a meek and demure girl that while caring was not getting as angry or as passionate about things because that would go against what Bryke wanted Katara to be in the show.
As I mentioned before, Katara's rage or at least genuine anger was only in for about two episodes out of the 8. And if you take out the 5th and 6th where she has been basically damseled with Sokka in the spirit world, that leaves on 4 more episodes to allow her to have her anger. Typically, one can thing, "Okay we can sprinkle it here or there in the other two and it should world". But all it takes is to see who was writing the episodes that truly not only hinder the world building of the show and breaks the rules of show don't tell or crammed it in so blatantly it feels like cringe and got rid of Katara being the one to free Aang because of her anger - was Bryke! They were the ones that were the head writers of the first episode and the 8th episode. The ones that had the most cramming down your throats dialogue, the clunky explaining of Aang's character out of now where and even curving Katara's rage or ability to be angry or snarky like she was in the show. Because Bryke wrote them, and also teleplayed a few - this being like adding notes and what the camera needs to do and how to frame scenes along side the dialogue. Meaning that they had some hand in making Live Action Katara this way.
If you notice in the episodes they didn't write: Omashu and the Cave of Two lovers - they were the only ones where Katara could be a bit more snappy and a bit more annoyed and vocal toward at least Sokka and Jet - not a lot but it was there. And oh would you look at that, the episode that they did not write had HEAVY hints for a certain firebender and waterbender being hinted at and color coded the lovers more vividly. And also, Katara getting to be empathetic while also not over explaining - which many always ragged on her for - where she could be human for once. Those episodes were the ones that they did not write and the story was somewhat better (Not better but I will take it over what we got prior)
And again, casual viewers might not know why this is a bad thing or probably wondering why I am against Bryke. But all it takes is looking at what they did to animated Katara that you all try to say "Was perfect as she was before" without considering what they did to her after the curtain fell. For any fan that has been following the show, you will find that most fans of Katara - the animated one -did not like what they did to her in the comics that continued their story and Legend of Korra, where she was a husk of a shell of her former self. And how she was all about "What Aang would have done, and what Aang did and oh how I missed Aang, he would know what to do". And yet, if she even showed any anger or negative emotions, she was painted as the bad person - easily look up Katara in the comics with a google search and you can see her being pushed around and flattened almost all the time when she is showing negative emotions that are genuine and not the funny mad in the show. Especially in the show as seen through this post, it did not always paint her anger in a natural thing for her or reinforced her angry as more comedic than actually something to consider as important until someone else stepped in to help her see it *cough* Zuko *cough*.
So to all the people that are trying to come after the live action Katara as being "Not the same energy girl power character who was expressive about her anger" you all "loved from the start'', please consider who and what was behind the scenes to make her this way. Especially since the animated show had other writers besides Bryke that understood Katara better if not more. Bryke wanted her to be more demure even in the pilot, and damsel. And yet the other writers gave her an actual story. Byrke have shown time and time again they do not want and angry passionate water bender that wants to be more active in changing the wrongs in the world, they want her to be more meek and docile and not fight back to let others save her in the comics and after. The OG had other writers that gave her her arc and Mae Whitmen give her the sass that we all love.
Live action Katara is no different. She has been trying to come into her own - with limited time to tell a story, limited time to get her arcs in fearful of cancellation, and with different writers, she can work, but not with Bryke. Same goes for the other characters too, not just Katara, but it seems that everyone pokes at Katara more and it is getting frustrating because some of these people just can never be happy with Katara.
Hopefully with season 2 and 3, we can have more time to flesh out the characters and maybe even have more show don't tell moments and being able to explore their feelings more. But only time will tell.
Rant over, sorry for the rambling mess.

I am going to make a furious rant here:
To the Avatar fandom out there, you tell me how the fuck is it wrong of Katara to mistrust someone who once made you believe that he has changed for the better then betray her trust , you motherfucking assholes?! Are you fucking telling me that no matter what, you must give unlimited second chances even though someone blowed up your chances ?! That it’s fucking wrong to mistrust someone who once made you believe that he changed for the better then betray her trust, what the fuck is wrong with you assholes?! Is it wrong for Zuko to face the consequences of his actions in Crossroads of destiny?! If so, fuck you to the death, you horrible hateful assholes! Go eat shit, you motherfucking assholes, rot in hell, you motherfucking assholes! I am so fucking sick of this shit! No one will EVER EVER EVER convinced me that there is nothing wrong with this fandom! I stg, Avatar fandom is the worst fandom ever! If you defend those assholes, you are a motherfucking apologist period. This fandom badly needs to be purged from the fandom permanently! The fandom badly needs more fandom police! They are fucking everywhere on social media! I cannot take this anymore, I genuinely have intrusive thoughts about this and has been bothering me badly! Unfucking believable, that this fucking happens! This is the actual reason why this blog exists! I can tolerate anti Bryke Zutara shippers, post 100 year war ATLA comic book haters, LOK haters, but this kind of fandom is genuinely pissing me off like crazy 🤬 🤬 🤬 🤬!!!

Unpopular Opinion:
I would be onboard with the creator/writer proceeding with Katara’s narrative as it is in canon, but with more self awareness, and framing it as a tragedy instead.
So her story will be a cautionary tale of how blindly believing in destiny can destroy a person’s agency, mislead their purpose, and subdue their true potential. (imo, a much needed deconstruction of destiny.)
I prefer them going all the way and make it super hauntingly impactful, like the Puppetmaster episode, than the forgettable whatever Katara ended up being post atla. 😤

The Fire Nation's Opinion.
Everyone thought Mai was cold.it didn't matter how she behaved or what she did, in the eyes of Zuko’s fangirls she was a heartless monster. Sometimes, Mai thought they were right. She supposed she could be quite cold and uncaring but Mai wasn’t a monster. Or at least she hoped she wasn't.
Zuko knew nothing of the stories his spurned lovers were cooking up but Mai did. She knew how they called her heartless for abandoning Tom Tom in Omashu. So next, she tried being more open with Zuko and ended up saving his life. But even that wasn't enough for them. They wanted someone absolutely perfect.
And from what she observed, the court and maybe even Zuko’s fangirls’ idea of “the one” was preferably someone with soft features, who always had the perfect comment for the right time. Someone who could firebend. Someone who laughed at simple jokes. Someone whose family was quite rich. Someone whose father wasn’t a traitor, Mai thought bitterly.
Ukano was in prison now and he hadn’t come into their lives. But Mai could see the impact her father’s absence had in the family. Tom Tom got into fights about him at school. Her mother had sort of shut down. Mai knew that Michi partially blamed her. Her mother wasn’t used to living in simple shops with simple furniture and simple beds for years.
Her father had worked very hard to get to the top. He’d been from a poor colonial island. He’d wanted importance. His intentions might have been good at the beginning but they had soured over time. By the time Mai was born, her father had gotten into the important position of a nobleman.
She also knew her parents had resented her for being a girl, as sons were usually the heads of businesses. Noblewomen were sweet and demure and Mai didn’t fit that mold. One wayward comment would send them to the very backwaters of the Fire Nation.
She was dark and gloomy and sarcastic. She took interest in weaponry, especially in the way Piandao made and used swords. Her voice was raspy and gritty as opposed to the chirp of other young girls. It was a thing she got teased for at the Royal Fire Academy for Girls.
Even when she was with Azula or Zuko, Mai didn’t get respect. She was always pushed to the side. Ty Lee made everyone know she was there. Her vibrant pink outfit stood out against the much darker reds and blacks of the other people. Ty Lee was soft and comforting. She always knew what to say. She knew party tricks. She was witty and charming and she flirted with nearly everyone she came across.
Perhaps it was stupid to hope that once she was with Zuko, people would notice and care about her, as a person. Mai wanted to be seen as so much more than a mere dalliance with the Prince of the Fire Nation.
After Zuko had left, Mai was made a laughingstock. People shot her pitying looks. They put on those fake smiles and gave those fake, “well meaning” comments that Mai hated.
At Boiling Rock, Mai’s actions were considered scandalous. Princess Azula had tried to keep it hushed up, but of course, word got out. After she and Zuko had made up after the end of the war, people gossiped and stared whenever they saw the couple together. At the time, neither Mai nor Zuko had minded. They continued to kiss and flirt, not caring about the people’s opinions.
Things had gone south after Zuko’s first few months as Fire Lord. They did spend time together, but it was so rare. Zuko buried himself in his work, not letting anyone in. Mai tried to help, convincing him to sleep while she looked through hours and hours of tedious files.
Their date to the Dragonbone Catacombs had been unplanned and spontaneous. Zuko, with a happy grin on his face, announced that he would take an entire day off so they could have a “normal” date. Mai had been overjoyed at the prospect. She accepted immediately.
Their date had gone quite well. They cuddled and talked and kissed. Mai hadn’t felt this happy in a long time.
When she’d broken up with him, the fangirls were outraged that Mai the harlot had broken up with their precious Fire Lord. The court thought she was a good riddance. Mai avoided (read: tried to) thinking about Zuko. That...hadn’t gone so well.
Now that they were back together again, the gossip mill had erupted in fire (not literally). Mai tried her best not to pay any attention to those comments but they still stung. Over time, Mai had slowly allowed herself to actually feel. Now, Zuko lay his head on her lap, ranting about some difficult Minister What's-His-Name.
Mai smiled down at him and rubbed circles on his temples. After Zuko had finished ranting, he looked up at her, a pout on his face.
“Were you even listening to me?” He asked.
“Mhmm. But I was thinking about other things too.”
“What things?”
“Your devoted group of lovers.” She said, the smile still on her face.
Zuko scoffed. “You don’t mind them, right?” He asked.
“I don't,” Mai answered, “But sometimes…” She trailed off. Zuko pulled himself from her lap and grabbed her hand.
“What, did someone say something?” He asked, concern illuminating his features.
“Not to me, personally. But with the rumours and gossip that have been going around, I just…” Mai faltered again, not able to find the right words.
Zuko stroked her hand. “Mai, you know that I will still like you and care about you, despite what everyone else says, right?” He said patiently.
It felt nice hearing those words from Zuko’s lips. It made it feel all the more real that he did care about her, he did love her. His words made Mai smile. She inched forward and linked their fingers.
“Thank you.” She murmured. Zuko smiled.
“You’re welcome.”
Mai rested his head on his shoulder, their hands still linked.

some anti kataang think this scenes is possessive can someone explain to me how is this possessive
this scene is cute
Tumblr media
Another shoutout to @rainyturtlecollector for this queue above!
And I agree. The fact that Aang had deep inside been wanting to kiss Katara yet always restrained himself whenever they rode on Appa disproves him being possessive if anything.
Tumblr media
Also, why don’t you guys take a look at the pictures above about how she felt about what Aang said and what she does in response. ;)

Do you think ATLA should have continued rather than making comics they should have add more themes and continued the Promise series in more realistic ways like United Republic getting Independence from Fire Nation though years long painful struggle. Firelord Zuko desperation to keep the colonies within and Aang's struggle keep peace and Balance and new revolutionaries envisioning the Ideas of New Nation of United Republic.
I’m sure that if Bryke wanted ATLA to continue, it would have happened.  I completely respect the creators’ decision to end the series when they did.  They told the story they wanted to tell.  They didn’t need to continue the series, but they chose to create new content, and I’m so thankful for that.  I love the comics and The Legend of Korra.  So to answer your question, no, I do not believe ATLA should have continued rather than making comics.  The comics are such a delight to read.  I can’t wait until the next trilogy is announced!
Also, the comics are canon, so ATLA did in fact continue.

Zack Snyder's Justice League Review!
Tumblr media
Zack Snyder's Justice League dir. Zack Snyder (2021) Warner Bros. Pictures, DC Films, Atlas Entertainment and The Stone Quarry Science Fiction, Action, Superhero Movie
Rating: 3.5 Waves
Tumblr media
Summary: Tormented by visions of a dark future, Bruce Wayne aka The Batman attempts to gather a team of superheroes to defend the planet. When alien tyrant Steppenwolf arrives on Earth seeking a long forgotten technology, this group of heroes must do everything in their power to keep him from locating all three Mother Boxes and destroying the world.
Content warnings: Violence, Death, Body Horror, Gore
This review DOES NOT contain spoilers for Zack Snyder's Justice League
A bit of background for those of you thinking “Didn’t Justice League come out years ago?” You are exactly right! Justice League was released in theaters in 2017 and is the fifth movie in the DCEU (DC Extended Universe). The same company that produced Justice League then funded Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021) which is a different version of the story that was released in 2017. Zack Snyder was actually the original director of Justice League (2017), but he stepped away from the project during post production and the film was handed over to director Joss Whedon. Whedon’s creative decisions led to rewrites, heavy editing and a notorious reshoot that required removal of Henry Cavill’s mustache via CGI. Therefore, Justice League as it premiered in theaters in 2017 was Joss Whedon’s vision of the story. As some of you might remember, Justice League (2017) was considered a “flop” as it lost the studio ~$60 million overall and was received by fans with mixed to negative reviews (6.2/10 IMDB, 40% Rotten Tomatoes). But since Zack Snyder had left so late in the project, there were rumors that his version of the film had been nearly finished and there was hope that the movie Snyder filmed was actually better than what Whedon had created. Fans took to social media to demand that Warner Bros release the “Snyder Cut'' of Justice League and in a move I personally find baffling, Warner Bros actually gave Zack Snyder another $70 million to finish his version. Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021) which was released on HBO Max is the final product.
Tumblr media
While understanding the context of how this movie came about is neat and honestly pretty hilarious, I never got around to see Justice League (2017) so I cannot give any commentary on whether this new film is any better. For those who are curious, my fiancée who has seen both says that the movies are extremely similar in plot, but there are significant changes to characterization and pacing. This review will solely be on the merits and shortfalls of Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021) in a spoiler free context since the movie was released just over a week ago (if you want to talk spoilers DM me I have So Many Thoughts).
Honestly, I was surprised how much I enjoyed this movie. My expectations were quite low considering what I heard about the original 2017 version and the fact that I’m more of a Marvel fan. The most surprising thing for me was that I sat through the entire 4 hr and 2 min runtime (for reference the runtime for Justice League (2017) is 2 hrs). Aside from Lord of the Rings (Return of the King runtime 4 hr 11min), I usually don’t indulge in movies that require me to block off an entire day, but I was curious and I love bandwagons.
The highlight of this movie are the characters. Each of our main characters had a deep, solid backstory that drew me in and made me invested in what was happening in this world. One thing lacking in a lot of ensemble superhero movies is balanced screen time between the main cast, but Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021) uses its time wisely to give each character depth and critical purpose in the narrative. Even the villain had compelling motivation as to why he is on earth doing dastardly deeds, and while I wasn’t rooting for him, I respected his motivations. I also appreciated that the writers of this movie made the characters intelligent. Sure, some decisions were driven more by emotion than logic, but the way defenses are set up and how our heroes use their unique powers left me incredibly impressed.
Tumblr media
The characters’ interactions with each other was also very enjoyable. Snyder took the time to include scenes centered around the team chilling with each other in ways that were refreshingly low stakes and mundane. The story was interspersed with scenes like Wonder Woman and Alfred making tea, Aquaman and Wonder Woman musing over cultural differences, and Cyborg and Flash digging up a body where you could really see the characters grow from strangers to teammates to friends. These scenes also peppered in some light humor that kept the movie from becoming too dark without distracting from the tone.
Tumblr media
Since Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021) is technically an action movie and it is rated R, I feel like I should touch on the action sequences. Overall, the action was incredibly fun to watch! It was made for the big screen so watching the epic battles for the first time on my TV at home was a bit underwhelming, but the well choreographed, high stakes fights were still visually pleasing. For a rated R movie there was not as much gore as there could have been, which I appreciated and the level of violence was pretty much what I expected from a comic book movie.
Tumblr media
The action scenes also do a fantastic job with power escalation. By that I mean the action illustrates the limits of one character’s power clearly in relation to other characters’ powers. This way you are aware of exactly how impressive the characters and their powers are on their own and so when someone or something stronger shows up we have context for how big of a threat we are dealing with. The clean way the story shows us everyone’s respective powers and their limits makes it so the stakes feel more tangible and it's not just unfathomably strong characters beating the shit out of each other with the winner decided by chance.
There are a few reasons the movie didn’t get a full five waves from me. First was that the Amazon’s outfits were very clearly made by horny men based on how much skin they were showing. I, a bisexual, personally love to see superheroes in less then full coverage, but when the Amazon warriors have their entire stomachs and cleavage out of their armor for no reason it exhausts me. What happened to the tasteful and stylish armor from Wonder Woman (2017)? This feels like a step in the wrong direction.
Tumblr media
The next concern I have that has kept me from recommending this movie to people is the overall pacing and length. While there were some great uses of the extended run time like the action sequences and team bonding I mention above, there were so many scenes that were way too slow for me to stay engaged. I found myself editing the movie in my head, like did we really need 2 full minutes of Bruce Wayne and his horse climbing a dreary mountain? I don’t think so. This was a narrative where I needed to pay attention lest I miss critical pieces of the story, but the random scenes that dragged on too long had me going to get snacks and checking my phone throughout. If I could rate the movie by halves the first half would get 2.5 Waves because of how it dragged and the second half would get closer to 4.5 Waves since the story really picks up and fun things start to happen.
Tumblr media
The final part of this movie that kept it from getting a higher rating was how closely it was tied to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. In fact, the first scene of Zack Snyder's Justice League is the final scene of Batman v Superman. There were many plot critical tie-ins to previous movies that left me feeling confused until I googled my questions during the slow scenes. If you have never seen Batman v Superman or Man of Steel then you will miss a lot of this movie, which I thought was unfair because other DCEU movies came out before the first iteration of Justice League like Wonder Woman and Suicide Squad and while events in those movies are mentioned in passing they are not nearly as important as the Batman and Superman-centric films. If the DCEU is going to pick favorites, the least it can do is pick movies I actually like (Wonder Woman (2017) remains my favorite DCEU movie to date). In general, superhero movies seem to be trending toward sagas and I prefer movies that you can just watch and enjoy without needing to see a bunch of other movies first.
Overall, I did very much enjoy this movie, but based on the run time alone it is not going to be for everyone. Measuring movie success during the pandemic is trickier than looking at box office numbers and labeling it a success or a flop, but it does appear that Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021) is doing well as far as critical reception and viewership. I hope that this success will allow the DCEU to explore all of the fun nooks and crannies of the universe Snyder pulled together. In fact, half of the epilogue of this movie felt like set up for future movies. I hope they come to fruition because there were some pretty compelling teasers at the end that I would love to see played out on the big screen.
Tumblr media
As I mentioned before, I’ve never seen the original cut of Justice League, but Snyder’s version left me fulfilled and satisfied with the narrative, so I am happy to have seen this newest cut first. This is a movie for people who love DC, love superhero movies or are just really invested in the hype.

My evidence for the fandom adultification of Katara and Hobie Brown coming purely from racism is that they have almost the exact same personality as and some similar story beats to Percy Jackson and it's worth noting that A)In Katara's case,it's always talked about this regarding her 14 year old self so Percy's the only one out of the 3 of them who's actually an adult and B)Speaking from experience,it's usually only people who go with how it's more realistic for him to an moc, specifically afrolatino, than for him to be white that give him his actual characterization.Apperantly you're only allowed to be a troubled kid instead of 'practically an adult' if you're white

The funniest thing about the ATLA comic haters is that if this shit were animated they would LOVE it.
Unfortunately they have the reading comprehension of Toph Beifong so we’re stuck with endless complaining from them not understanding a story written for children.
