hey! I'm trying to design a kind of spooky-circus + pastel-goth inspired little bat guy (his name is Fig Tart). He's going to be a magical animal companion to a Magical Boy Character I'm making.

I'm trying to figure out what I can add to his design to make it feel more complete. If you have any ideas of what could look cool or something I could change then I'd appreciate it!

Important themes: hearts, stitches/ plush toy, stripes, frills and bows

The core colours are: Dark brown, washed out pink, strawberry(?), cream, and rose gold

Fun story, according to old Norse beliefs my companion animal is a red fox.

The old nordics believed individuals and families had protection spirits called fylgie (literally follower or companion) usually in the form of an animal for individuals and women/goddesses for families. They would protect you and act on your behalf.

If you see your own fylgie it is a death omen but other people who are close to you might be lucky enough to see your fylgie while you are asleep (and people gifted in magic might even see it while you’re awake) which of course means you’re unlikely to know what your fylgie is unless someone else sees it.

So how do I know mine is a red fox? When I was 4 years old my parents rented a cottage with some friends for their summer vacation. One evening they put me to bed and the adults arranged themselves in the living room in such a way that my parents could keep an eye on me while the others had their backs to the bedroom. They just sat around and chitchatted when my parents suddenly noticed a red fox in the bedroom with me! It calmly looked around, sniffed me and walked out of the cottage like it was the most normal thing in the world at which point my parents went “OH MY GOD THERE WAS A FOX IN THE ROOM WITH OUR DAUGHTER!!!!”

For the nervous among you, red foxes aren’t dangerous to humans. They don’t even hurt babies and certainly not a 4 year old. Rabies has been eradicated among red foxes in Northern Europe so they’re just allowed to do their thing so long as they don’t eat people’s chickens/rabbits. You know, just in case you were wondering why my parents didn’t freak the fuck out and yelled at the fox.

But yeah, you can be boring and say it was just a normal fox that found it’s way into my bedroom, but it is pretty cool how perfectly it fits with fylgie beliefs.

So keep that behind your ear, if people tell you they saw an unexpected animal near you while you were asleep you’ll know what your fylgie is.

I think that when Donna inevitably shows up to the Companion Support Group she'll mention the Toymaker pretty quickly. It'd make sense, right? Something pretty recent for her that would provide some context as to why she has a wet cat Doctor in her house.

Anyway, she gets as far as saying the word "Toymaker" and both Tegan AND Ace start cussing up a storm.

In love with the idea of captain marvel being Billy's imaginary friend. Like, it'd be so easy. Early depictions had them as almost fully separate people sometimes, like one soul with two minds, rather than just two filters like we mostly see now.

But imagine a Billy down on his luck, hurt and hiding from police and criminals alike, daydreaming the hours away as children do, taking inspiration from all the superheroes rising to fame, making little stories to play out his dreams of saving the world with a generic action doll he found while dumpster diving once. Most of the paint's rubbed off.

Red's his favourite colour, his comfiest jumper is a bright ruby even after all the grime and washes. Gold, too, it's shiny and warmer than silver! A hero cape is a must, big and eye catching! And he can fly, of course, like superman, and in his daydreams, when he's sore and frustrated after a long day's grind, his superhero is smart enough and knows all the right words to get the bullies to stop without resorting to fighting.

His superhero fantasy is one he spends a lot of time on, the first one he goes for when struggling to sleep at night, and he can picture it so clearly. Captain marvel is big and bright and kind, strong enough to lift the boxes for the old lady up the road who's moving all by himself, fast enough to catch Jamie who fell out of the tree on Saturday and broke his leg and couldn't come to class for weeks. He appears at the entrance to alleys when Billy is cornered, he steps up behind to cover for him when he gets caught shoplifting, he sits at the bus stop with him when it's pouring rain and the right bus doesn't seem to be coming.

And then the wizard comes, or rather whisks him away, and like a magician from a fairytale breathes life into his imaginary friend until Billy feels thrice his size and a million times more invincible.

From then on, captain marvel is a real hero, just like Billy is a real boy, and as one they save the whole city, and then the whole world, and get cats down from trees and help Mrs Victoria move the last of her boxes and she gives them a pinch in the cheek and cookies for the road and sometimes it hurts but it's so much better than he imagined.

I call this the 'confused but the got the spirit' strategy. Emps tried. Had to have been bad luck. The downside to trying something they're not proficient in. Like chaos and teamwork.

I understand how every other class progresses in power, but Ranger's 'exceptional training' with their animal companions? Confounds me. wth rangers.

Greygold: Terrible at Raising Kids, But Can Unlock Killer Animal Companions' Magical Potential they don't even know themselves. And dancing. If a bear can summon another bear while in hell, that's more than talent, that bear knows magic.
