Glow Fly
Yay! It's the last one in this series. I don't mind posting but it does take a lot of time. Trying to make a description of the build interesting can be challenging too.
As those who have followed me for awhile know I'm a bit obsessed with making mechanical insects. They are not easy to make. The legs need holes in the main body, the head needs a hole, the abdomen needs another hole. That's a lot of holes in a tiny piece of brass. The engineering is always a challenge. It does make it a bit easier if it's like this, mounted on a panel. I will make another but just anchor each piece, legs, body, head, abdomen, to the board. If I space it correctly - it will look like a joined mechanism hopefully.
I didn't use a LED for this one. I wanted it to look old, so I chose to use an incandescent globe. As it's only 3V it's not that powerful. You can really see the difference between the power use of an LED compared to old "Edison" bulbs. The light isn't the feature here - the insect is. So I didn't overly embellish the piece for that reason too.
The wings are brass charms but they are thin and fragile so I don't think they would hold up under heavy wear unsupported. As a pendant you would only have to worry about clothing or hair snags. The body is a small brass tube. I inserted four smaller tubes and poured in some resin. I drilled those out so I could thread the four legs (made from heated element wire and crimps). The wire leads from the bulb are threaded through as is the head (a heart shaped vintage copper bead) and finally to two tiny front legs/feelers. The eyes are simply phillip's head screws. The wings are screwed onto an hexagonal ring. That is attached using two more screws tightened onto the body. As the wires are so fine, I had to secure the body with an extra wire anchor so it wouldn't put any tension on the wires.
There is an obvious caveat on this piece. She is fragile. The incandescent globe will chew through batteries too. I showed this to my group of friends who meet down the dog park on Fridays for wine and snacks. It was the favourite of many. I'm looking forward to making more fantasy insects that won't really resemble any real species on our planet.

Elder Bones... what if I... made a ClanGen mod based off of Better Bones.
Sure go ahead!
I hope they take that nutrition mechanic off the backburner soon, I feel like that update would be the perfect opportunity for someone to go in there with a BB-inspired mod.

One thing people need to understand about me is that I am always role-playing. Even and especially when I'm playing board games where that's not the point. So to me, games where the mechanics have literally nothing to do with the framing device are kind of absurd.

Guys what if scarabs dream shadow thing is blue because he was originally blue, like a lobster situation and he got fucking boiled somehow. Ignore how that doesn’t make sense. Just think about it, because I know we’ve been running with the whole ripped off wing situation, I think this might be interesting… I think I might have something here…..
Scarab could actually be a metallic blue. Just ignore the science behind it and embrace the blue. Trust me. Might use lobster mechanic for daydreamer AU

Been fixating on how Final Form’s laser chest weapon works. He’s got a lot of organic stuff going on as well so here’s my idea - feel free to ask questions if it’s not clear enough.
Kinda feel like using the chest cannon is a last resort for him, probably gives him stitch or something as well as depleting loads of energy

Watching a lot of slow motion flight videos of insects... you know, for no particular reason.
Very interested in how beetle wings fold and unfold. Def for no reason, totally.

14 years old me would not believe how I am doing right now. Am I stressed and all? Sure. But I've never had this many relations and responsibilities in stuff I actually care about, I've never been this social, and I've never been this active before WOAGH.

I was re-designing a character last night and was struggling a bit with the wings, so I finally just did a whole study of all sorts of different style wings. It really helped me focus in on what I was doing wrong.

Some after work Instagram browsing brought up an unexpected gem today as it randomly decided to show me some automatons.
I haven't seen any since childhood, where I vaguely recall them featuring on quirky supernatural or spooky shows as creepy curiosities from time to time.
I hadn't realised that they were still made or indeed that they could be made into such beautiful creations. With serenely swimming whales, cantering horses and fluttering birds & insects.
I decided to see if I could make a basic one using bits and bobs from my room. This ended up including black card, scissors, a bamboo skewer from one of my orchids, wire and wire clippers, a thin cylindrical ice cream stick that I saved from a kulfi, and hot glue and my glue gun.
It took a bit of time to wrap my head around the (admittedly very basic) mechanics and the end result is liable to come apart at the seams if I so much as think about turning the mechanism too vigorously. But I am happy with my first attempt.
If I can figure out how to make a less slap dash mechanism then I might make a realistically painted deaths head hawk moth automaton. I am rearing some caterpillars of this species so I am ever so slightly obsessed with them at the moment. You can see the caterpillars at the top of this post and I don't think I am alone in thinking they are absolutely gorgeous little buggers.
