As anarchist Allen Thornton points out, “Police aren’t in the protection business; they’re in the revenge business.” Police officers rarely interrupt criminal activity as it’s happening, and so they’re not really preventing or stopping crimes at all. Rather, they intervene after the crime has already been committed. In addition, the militarization of police forces with weapons of war does not reduce crime rates, while simultaneously, it weakens public support of said police forces. So, if cops aren’t preventing or stopping crimes, what are they really doing? They are serving as henchmen for the State.
