Chapter 2: Campfire cuddles
Link ran fast through the grass with the others chasing behind us. He had shifted me so he could carry me with both his arms, sheathing his sword on his back. With a grunt, he jumped down from a ledge and continued to jog.
“Link! Wait up!”
“You can't have her!” he yelled back.
I looked up at him in shock, not having heard his voice before. The woman he was shouting out said he only speaks around people he trusts. Does that mean that he thinks I'm his friend? Do I have friends? I could feel my ears flick up and down in excitement and I puffed my cheeks out trying to stop them. Link just poked one of my cheeks as he stopped behind a rock, panting.
“You should put me down, catch your breath!”
He just grunted and placed me down, still holding me close. The others ran past the rock he had hunkered behind as I pried myself from his arms. His eyes narrowed as he reached out to grab me again and I pushed his arm down with a smile.
“Don't worry, I'm not going anywhere! Get some rest, I'll go get your friends.”
His eyes widened as I stood up fully and stepped on top of the rock. I could hear him start to speak but stop himself as he looked up at me from where he had crouched down. My skirt of leaves gathered by the Koroks was slightly messed up from his grabbing so I re-adjusted them before jumping to grab their attention. The blonde woman ran over quickly and grabbed my hands.
“Are you ok? It's starting to get dark we should set up a camp before heading back to Hyrule Castle tomorrow. We can use this as an opportunity to get to know you better!”
She smiled at me and pulled me towards the others as they began to set up tents that they must have been carrying with them. Her grip on my hand was just as tight as Link’s as if she was scared id leave. Link grumbled under his breath as he set up a campfire. It wasn't long until they were done and sat around the campfire.
The women went around the fire introducing everyone. I could only smile to myself as everyone began talking. Friends, I have friends that look like me now. Zelda just showed me the strange device she had, showing me the “camera” on it. Eventually, everyone went silent as I fiddled with the device, looking through the various places captured within.
“So, Y/N, if it isn't rude to ask, what are you?” Daruk asked.
I raised a brow at his question before the fish woman beside him spoke up.
“We know that the Koroks said you were a forest spirit, but you look rather similar to Hylians, like Link and Zelda. We're just a tad confused about if you're a type of forest spirit or a Hylain raised by forest spirits.”
“Oh, it isn't rude don't worry. I'm... Not sure. I've never left the forest before now, Hestu usually told me stories of their travels but I've never left myself.”
“Oh, you poor thing! We must take you around Hyrule and show you how wonderful everything is!” Zelda exclaimed, hugging me tightly.
“Dont bother, Rito village will be so impressive she’ll never want to leave!” Revali spoke confidently.
I just smiled and laughed. Daruk soon began laughing as well.
“You say that but the hot springs have a great power! I never want to leave them when I go!” He laughed.
The others began laughing as well, and I felt Link’s hand grab one of my fingers. I looked over at him and he rubbed his thumb over the back of my hand. His eyes never left our stare until he faltered and glared at Zelda who was still hugging me. A strange feeling of dread settled in as the others grew silent and looked around. I was unsure what had alarmed them but I felt the wariness that sat heavy among the group. A strange red slip of paper landed on my lap and just stared at it, confused. It felt like someone was breathing against my neck.
“Hm, intresting, so the Princess has recruited another. I wonder what’s so special about her? What do you say, do we tell Astor?”
“She doesn’t appear to be a threat Master, but he will be angry if we don’t notify him.”
“True, let’s go.”
The slip of paper disappeared along with the voices. I looked around in shock as the others seemed to relax, had they not heard those voices?
“We should get some rest, goodnight!” Zelda said, crawling into her tent.
One by one they disappeared into their tents and I sat on the grass watching the stars. I didn’t wish to intrude on their sleep, that would be so rude. Link shuffled out of his tent and motioned for me to join him. I shook my head, his tent look so small, there would be no space between us. He just sighed and sat beside me, pulling my head to his chest while rubbing my back.
“Link? What are you-“
“Shh, sleep. I’ll keep watch.”
I went to speak again but something about his warm chest and scent lulled me to sleep faster than I had ever experienced before. It was like I was being hypnotised.

Oh, I wonder what those voices were aha ha... I made it so obvious I'm sorry-

Chapter 2 — Kimi
Tumblr media
[chapter warnings: rude bitches, panic attack]
t.o.c ; << | >>
"Do I know my way around Hyrule? Do you not?" You gazed at the boy's pointed ears. "You're Hylian, you should know your way around. You're from here."
Link looked away from you. "I don't remember." He mumbled.
"What?"
"I don't remember." He said a little louder. "I, uh, got injured. And now I don't remember anything. I need to talk to Impa, but I don't know who that is or where they are here."
Impa. What a familiar name. She was the elder of Kakariko when you were still young, and you supposed by the sound of it she was still kicking. Good for her.
"I might be able to show you to her, but that's as far as my knowledge goes." You smiled sheepishly. "I don't know Hyrule either, except for Gerudo Desert. The rest I've only seen through maps."
Link raised an eyebrow. "Aren't you a traveler?"
"This is only my first week of it. I left on my twentieth birthday a few days ago." You shook your head, not wanting to delve further into why you didn't know anything about Hyrule and grabbed Link's wrist. "Come on, let's go see Impa. I think I remember where she stays.”
If the elder Sheikah remembered you, she didn't show it. Instead, she focused on the man in front of you, ushering you upstairs with a girl named Paya as quickly as you had entered.
Paya was around the same age as you, yet seemed completely different. She was nearly spastic, moving around her room with no purpose other than to fidget. She answered your attempts at conversation with one-word answers, only reciprocating when she wanted to turn it towards the stranger downstairs.
"Link, you said his name is? Is he your boyfriend?"
At the question, you awkwardly laughed. "Him? No, I just met him not too long ago and he asked me to bring him here."
"Oh," Paya sounded relieved. Your tight smile turned into a real one as you sensed a wonderful opportunity.
"Yeah, he's real cute, isn't he?" You subtly tried to tease, "He might be into you. I saw him looking our way when we were leaving."
Paya turned a bright red, matching the accents of her outfit nearly perfectly. "R-really?!" Her voice raised a few notches, "I- there's no way! Maybe he was looking at you, you're gorgeous!"
"I'm nothing like you," You made a face, slightly playing it up to see how far this would go while simultaneously rejecting the compliment, "If there's any gal Link might be into, it's you."
Paya seemed to swoon at the thought, but before she could respond Impa's voice called you both down from her room. Link stood where you left him, but this time with a different wardrobe. He had a bright blue tunic on, matching his eyes nearly perfectly.
You weren't the only one who noticed, though, as you noticed the red on Paya's face returning.
Link thanked Impa and glanced at you— a silent way of saying "let's go". You followed him out and began your trek back to the hotel.
"What did she say?"
"She said that I could maybe get my memories back by going to places that I have pictures of."
"Pictures? Do you have a camera or something?"
"Or something." Link reached for his belt and grabbed some device— you recognized it as a Sheikah Slate, old technology you learned about while scouring the poor excuse of a library in the Yiga hideout. They weren't the smartest, so books were uncommon. "This isn't mine, it's an old friend's. She has these pictures of places we've apparently gone together, but I have to go to Hateno to get it fixed."
Together? Were they together? Goddess, that would suck if Link had a girlfriend he didn't even remember. Poor chick.
"So you're going to go to these places and just... what? Hope for the best?"
Link shrugged. "If I have the time, yeah. I have more important things to do right now."
"Like?"
Link didn't answer, instead opening the door to the Inn and letting you in first. He went to his bed and sat down, pulling out the slate and swiping through it. A while passed and Link continued to just stare at the screen, brows furrowed in what was probably some attempt at remembering his past.
"You're gonna get a headache from looking at that."
"I already have one."
You stood up and went over to his bed, slipping the slate out of his hands and turning it towards yourself. "Why is the map blank?"
"I have to go to certain towers to get a map of each region."
"Ohh, those weird super tall glowy things?" You grinned like a child in a candy shop when Link nodded, "They just showed up a little bit ago. What, were they made specifically for you?"
"Kind of? And those shrines are too. I just wish I knew where to go and where I am."
"Goddess, you must be mighty special for a bunch of ancient technology to just work for you." You joked.
Link looked at you with a look you didn't really recognize. "You said you just started traveling. Do you have a paper map?"
"I do." You turned and dug into your bag, pulling it out and unrolling it in between you. You also grabbed a pen, just in case. "Where do you need to go next?"
"According to Impa, first Hateno. Then Zora's Domain, Eldin, Rito Village, and Gerudo in no specific order."
"Hm," You looked at the map, "That order seems to be the most practical— starting close and then traveling to the further ones. It just works out that Hateno is first on our way, I need to go there too."
At that, Link paused. "Our way?"
"Yeah, I'm coming with you. I need to go to those places too, so it works."
"Uh, absolutely not." Link shook his head and took the pen from your hand, "My journey is way too dangerous for you."
"What?" You grabbed the pen back, "We have the same journey— we're going to the same places. How is that too dangerous? If anything, it would be safer to travel together."
"I just wouldn't be able to protect myself and someone else, you know?"
"Who said I needed you to protect me?" You were a little offended. Was this because you were a woman? "I can handle myself."
Link raised an eyebrow as if to challenge that. "Y/N-"
"Listen, you don't remember anything, right? You need someone who at least knows a little bit. I might not have actually traveled but I read books and know people who do. I know the monsters and the cultures of the regions and all that shit. You need that. Let me come along and help. I'll stay out of whatever shit you have to do."
Link seemed to think about it for a moment and then sighed. "Fine."
You cheered and looked back down at the map, marking the locations you needed to go to— the main towns in every region, stables, smaller villages, and Hateno itself. "First, Hateno. Then, to East Necluda to Zora's Domain."
"Why do you need to go to Hateno so badly?"
You looked up at him and raised an eyebrow. "If I tell you my mission, you have to tell me yours."
"...We'll see."
"My little sister lives there. I haven't seen her in four years, so I need to visit. As for the rest of Hyrule, I'm looking for my brother. We all got separated." Link looked as if he was going to ask questions, so you interrupted. "You?"
"I have to tame the Divine Beasts."
You couldn't contain the loud laugh that erupted from your throat. "I'm sorry- what? Ganon controls those beasts, nobody can tame them except for the Cham...pions..."
You trailed off, suddenly putting two and two together.
Link's name was familiar to you. You'd heard it numerous times.
The Hylian Champion, destined to destroy Ganon with the Sword that Sealed the Darkness.
The Yiga drilled it into your head that he was a bad guy. You didn't believe them when they said he'd return, and yet you sat in front of him, talking as if he was a long-lost friend.
"I thought the Champions died 100 years ago."
"They did. I almost did, but I was put into a healing shrine on the Great Plateau. I woke up about a week ago. No memories, nothing. Just the Sheikah Slate and the ghost of the King telling me what I have to do."
"That's— wow. That's a shocker." You didn't know what to say. The traumatized part of you was conflicted— riddled with guilt. Guilt for betraying the organization you grew up brainwashed into, but also guilt because this guy seemed like a great dude. And yet you were trained to kill people like him. Or more specifically, just him. "So what if I just joined you on this little adventure and didn't fight the Beasts with you? Would you feel better then?"
"I definitely would."
"Deal."
"Deal." Link held out his hand and you grabbed it, feeling the rough callouses on his palm and the warmth of his skin that seemed to seep into your own. You were both definitely holding this handshake for too long.
You coughed awkwardly and pulled your hand away, rolling the map back up and tucking it into your bag before sitting in your own bed. "Wake me up when you're ready to leave. Goodnight, Link."
"Goodnight, Y/N."
———
"This is fucking stupid."
"You're fucking stupid. Drop the attitude or I'm leaving your ass."
"You're the one who woke me up at 5am, Link! You can't be mad at me for that when we didn't go to bed until 1."
"If you're gonna adventure, you gotta get used to running on little sleep. From here on out, it's tough."
You huffed and crossed your arms, focusing on Taz's mane as Link rode his own horse beside you. "Shit sucks."
"Imagine having the fate of Hyrule on your shoulders along with that."
You cut your eyes at him. "I liked you better when you were quiet."
At that, Link let out a little laugh. It was the first time you'd heard him laugh and it was a pretty sound. You smiled back, ignoring the slight tinge of heat in your cheeks.
"Thanks for this, by the way. Letting me tag along and all."
Link didn't look at you, choosing instead to focus on the road ahead. "It's no worries, really. I enjoy the company. I've already figured out how lonely traveling gets, so it's nice to have someone to keep me away from my thoughts for a while." He let out a dry laugh.
"It's gotta be tough-- being destined to save humanity. I'm glad I can help in any way.”
Link finally looked up at you and flashed a wide smile, but it didn't quite reach his eyes. "Hateno is a few more hours. How about we take a break here for lunch?"
You nodded and pulled Taz off of the road into a large patch of grass, watching as Link pulled an axe out of an extra weapon holder on Epona and started going towards a patch of trees a few yards away. Patting Taz's nose, you pulled out a pot and some vegetables you had bought in Kakariko and met Link, starting a fire and placing the food inside to cook. After a while, you were able to pour the soup into two bowls and you began eating.
"I didn't know you knew how to cook." Link hummed, stuffing his face with the veggie cream soup you had made.
"You don't know a lot about me in general," You joked, "but I've known for a while. I guess I've become good since you just finished your second bowl."
"Super good!" Link put his bowl in his lap, seemingly finished, and looked at you. "So tell me about you."
You raised an eyebrow, pausing from your soup. "What?"
"You said I don't know a lot about you, and you're right. So tell me more. I think I have a right to know who I'm traveling with."
You internally cringed, wondering what all you could give away without letting Link know the truth. You know, the truth that you were actually raised by an organization created almost specifically to kill him.
"My mom was Sheikah and my dad was a regular Hylian, so I grew up in Kakariko with my brother and sister. We, uh, got kidnapped and taken away for a while. Eventually, we escaped and I ended up in Gerudo Town and I didn't know where my siblings were. As you know, I found out my little sister is in Hateno. So now I'm here, traveling and looking for them." You shrugged, feigning nonchalance as Link raised an eyebrow.
"You glossed over the kidnapping pretty quickly. That's scary."
"It was, but they kind of just kept us there. No clue why." You looked down at your soup, finding both it and talking about yourself unappetizing. "What about you? Do you remember anything from before?"
Link shook his head. "Nothing. Impa said to go back to her after I've remembered something, but there's nothing so far. I was Princess Zelda's knight, and I apparently failed at defeating Ganon."
"Yeah, no shit." You snorted. "This time will be different, though."
Link glanced at you with a face you couldn't describe. "I hope so." He stood up suddenly, taking the bowl and putting it back in Epona's pouch. "Impa said something about there being someone in Hateno who could help fix my Sheikah Slate. Let's go so we can get there before sundown."
———
"Halt! Who goes there!"
You skidded your horse to a stop, Taz's hooves digging into the wet dirt road beneath you. Link stopped shortly after, eyes wide at the pitchfork being brandished in front of the both of you.”
"Uh, I'm Y/N. That's Link." You backed Taz up a bit, not trusting this random short man outside of the village. "We're travelers."
"Travelers, eh?" The man looked you up and down with a scrutinizing gaze. You felt like shrinking under it. "Hylian?"
"Yes?"
He lowered his pitchfork, but not by much. "General Store is right ahead, same with the Inn. Don't go nowhere else causing trouble in my town. I'm sworn to protect this place with my life."
Link raised an eyebrow at the man. "Thank you, uh,"
"Thadd."
"Right. Thadd." You interrupted, "Could you tell us where to find a girl named—"
"You're askin' the wrong man. I ain't one for giving tours."
"We're not asking for a tour, I just need to find Kimi-"
"If you want a tour, go talk to Seldon right at the boutique. He's real nice."
"I— okay." You resisted rolling your eyes, "Thank you."
You continued forward, sharing a look with Link before finding the boutique and a smiling man out front. He waves you both over, "Hello there! My name is Seldon, care for a tour of our wonderful town?"
"Uh- we're just looking for one thing." You replied, feeling a little bad to deny his offer.
"Wh- so no tour?" Seldon sighed loudly, his shoulders dropping in disappointment. "What can I point you to?"
"Do you know where a little girl named Kimi lives?"
Seldon raised an eyebrow. "Kimi? She's too young to be having random visitors without her parents knowledge—"
"I'm her sister. Before she came here. She somehow found me and I just want to see her." You pleaded.
Seldon seemed to think for a second, then sighed. "Alright, but if it turns out you're lying Thadd's gonna have at you both."
Without waiting for a reply, Seldon turned his back to you both and walked up the main road of Hateno towards a small cluster of houses near the top. After leading you a few doors down, he stopped at one with a bright red door and gave it a knock, only stepping back once it opened to reveal a woman a bit older than you.
"Can I help you?"
"Uh yes," Your heart was pounding, "A little bit ago, I started getting letters from my little sister, who you took in—“
"Y/N? Is that you?"
A meek voice came from behind the lady, and then out peeked a small head of hair. Suddenly, the girl grinned widely and pushed past the woman, running to you with her arms wide. "Y/N!"
You smiled as well and crouched down, engulfing her in a tight hug, fighting to keep tears back.
"Kimi..." You pulled back and held her shoulders, "You've gotten so big!"
Kimi giggled and fiddled with the edge of her dress before gasping and turning to the older woman. "Mom! This is my big sister, Y/N! She finally came!"
"That's wonderful." The woman smiled. "I'm Ameil, and my husband— who'll be out in a sec— is Laslow! Kimi has said so much about you. Come in!"
You smiled at Ameil and stood to walk in when your wrist was grabbed by a gloved hand. You turned back to the owner— Link— and raised an eyebrow.
"That research lab up there on the hill— Impa said I needed to go there."
"What do you want me to do about that?"
Link snorted, "Nothing. I want you to catch up with your sister, so I'm going to head up there and see who I can talk to about fixing my Sheikah Slate. I'll be back soon."
"Oh, okay." You smiled at him, "Be careful, it looks like it's going to rain soon. I don't want you getting sick."
"Yes ma'am." Link fake-saluted and turned away, heading towards the research lab.
You, on the other hand, followed Kimi and Ameil inside. Sitting in one of the living room couches was who you assumed was Laslow. Ameil joined him on the couch while you and Kimi sat on one across from them.
Ameil continued to smile— it was getting a little strange at this point, but you shrugged it off— while Laslow put down his book and paid attention to you.
"So, Y/N, we've heard a lot about you." Laslow began, "But one thing we've never understood is how she came into our care in the first place. One minute Ameil and I are traveling the Taobab Grasslands, next we're picking up a little girl unconscious under a tree and taking her home. How did that come to be?"
Your breath caught in your throat and the world began to spin, but you tried not to show it.
They really went in for a first meeting, didn't they?
"Honestly," You steeled your voice and looked down at Kimi in a silent way of saying 'I will not tell'. "There was an accident. Kimi, our brother, and I were in Gerudo when a sandstorm hit— that Divine Beast is no joke— and we got separated. I couldn't find them, so I went to Gerudo Town and stayed, trying to find them. It took four years for Kimi to finally reach me. How did you find me, by the way?"
At your redirection of the topic, Kimi perked up. "At first, I just asked every traveler who came into Hateno if they knew you! None of them did, but a Rito suggested that I send a letter to every town asking about you and describing you, and if they found you then you would write back! And you did!"
"I did." You laughed, "I told you I'd always be there for you, I keep my word."
Kimi threw her arms around you once again and you felt a shift in the atmosphere. You looked up from your little sister to see Ameil, still sitting in the same spot, still smiling. She folded her hands in her lap and took a deep breath.
"I just think it's rather irresponsible for you to have your younger siblings out in the harsh elements like that in the first place." Ameil shook her head in disapproval. "It's common sense for sandstorms to happen in Gerudo."
You tried not to roll your eyes and reminded yourself that Ameil didn't know the truth— you might have to be the bad guy and take blame that doesn't even exist to save your identities. "We didn't have much of a choice. I can't go into all of it but—"
"But what? What could you have possibly put little Kimi through that required you to trek through potentially deadly weather and risk her life? Do tell."
Ameil was obviously pushing your buttons, trying to reveal things that you were sure she had pushed Kimi about before. "I can't."
Ameil threw her hands in the air. "I am Kimi's mother. I have a right to know what goes on."
You opened your mouth to respond, but Kimi beat you to it.
"Y/N, are you going to look for Hiro next?"
"Yes!" You were relieved, "Have you heard from him?"
Kimi's face dropped. "No, but I want to come with you-"
"Absolutely NOT." Ameil interrupted. "You are not going on some dangerous trip with strangers.”
"But Y/N is my sister. My REAL sister. You're not even my real parents!"
Ameil gasped, and Laslow sat up and practically growled, "Go to your room!"
Kimi stood up and ran to her room, slamming it hard enough to make the house shake. You could only watch as she left, the atmosphere getting even more uncomfortable in her absence. You didn't want to look back at Ameil and Laslow, but when you did Ameil was already looking at you with a look you couldn't recognize.
"You do see where we're coming from, right?" She asked gently, as if you were some toddler who needed talking down to. "Our sweet Kimi is our pride and joy. We can't possibly let her go back into the hands of the person who lost her. Who knows, she could go missing a second time. We don't quite see you as a responsible big sister. After all, why did it take so long for you to come find her?"
Condescending. That was the look.
At Ameil's words, you realized her feelings towards you. Ameil hated you. She looked down on you— blamed you for "abandoning" Kimi. But she doesn't know the truth.
How you risked your life for your siblings.
How you turned and faced the Yiga Clan head-on to give them enough time to escape and survive, even if you didn't.
How you fed them, defended them, took care of them while you were all imprisoned in the desert, working every day to get stronger and stronger to one day escape and create a better life for Hiro and Kimi.
You stood up and walked to the door, ignoring Ameil's fake protests and questions about why you were leaving, and slammed the door hard enough to shake the house once more. Tears blurred your vision as you walked down path, heading nowhere in particular except away from that house, and in your rush you accidentally bumped into a body.
"Goddess," You wiped your face, "I'm sorry-“
"Y/N, what happened?"
Link's voice sent a wave of comfort over you, and his hands gripping your shoulders gave you enough stability to collapse, tears streaming down your face more as your knees hit the ground.
Link fell to his own knees in front of you, quickly pressing you into his chest and gently shushing you, waiting until your sobs ceased before talking.
"What happened?"
"They-" Deep breath. "They blamed m-me for Kimi going missing. And my brother. And-and they said I wasn't a good sister, and I know that I'm not— who leaves their siblings for four years? I couldn't help it—"
You started to cry again, coughing out your words and wheezing in breaths in between. Your hands trembled, yet you couldn't stop it. Eventually it spread to the rest of your body, shaking like a leaf in an emotional storm. It was hard to focus on one thing when everything crowded in your vision and overwhelmed your senses.
Breathe in. You couldn't.
Breathe out. No.
In. Please.
Out. You can't.
Was this it? Was this the end? Just like that?—
"Y/N!"
Link.
He's still holding you.
His hand is laid atop your head, rubbing soothing circles into your hair. Your face is in the crook of his neck, finally able to breathe. His smell was comforting. His other arm wrapped itself around your torso, holding you close to his chest. When did he pull you onto his lap?
"It's okay. You're okay. Is Kimi upset with you?"
"No," Words struggled to escape, "Just her parents."
"Then who cares? You still have your sister. She still loves you."
You stayed quiet for a second, contemplating. Link was right— you still had Kimi. Ameil and Laslow were the issue. You just had to somehow prove that you were responsible enough to be around Kimi again. But how?
Find Hiro. Reunite your family.
Your muscles unclenched, and you slouched into Link's warmth a bit more. In your thoughts, he had begun to rock you gently and laid his cheek upon your head.
"Yeah." You yawned.
"C'mon, silly." Link shifted and stood you both up. "Let's go to the inn and rest, then. We'll figure out the next step tomorrow when we're fully rested."
"Right."

The hotheaded caption of the Hylian army, who’s always ready for battle! ...but never for casual conversation. Though romance doesn’t exactly fit within their skillset, their passion is as powerful as the final blow to a raging Lynel. It’s guaranteed that no harm will ever come to whoever they have their sights set on, and rest assured every day will be nothing short of an adventure; heart-pounding tests for the soul. Every day shall be lived like it’s the last!

The patient, empathetic, and hard-working personal servant of Hyrule’s beloved Princess. Their sole purpose is to serve Zelda’s every domestic need down to the letter, and they’re certainly more than happy to do so. Their admiration for her true self goes even beyond the average citizen’s, so nothing will ever keep them away from being by her side. It’s the least they can do after what happened all those years ago...

No one special, just a shy, humble salesperson...who wants nothing more than to help with the fight against Calamity Ganon. Ever since disaster struck their village, they’ve held a raging urge to push back against those forces of evil and avenge those once close to them. Although, they have almost no skill and the courage of a frail twig... and no one’s a better trainer than one of Princess Zelda’s beautiful bodyguards.

A traveling Zoran healer who follows in their princess’ footsteps. Though they were not born with any healing abilities like dear Mipha, the grace she blessed upon them while they were kids was enough to inspire their fate. And after her tragic outcome within Vah Ruta, they wish to carry out a similar grace and kindness she had possessed across Hyrule. And who would have thought a certain upbeat prince would catch a heavy sight of such a simple deed...

Out of every tribe within Hyrule, there is always a special group of those who have the courage to go out and explore every inch of its wonders. This, of course, includes the Rito, having one traveler who is always happy to take in Hyrule’s beauty from amongst the clouds. Staying in one place and mingling with the other townsfolk was never their specialty, so, bow in wing, they set out on an adventure that changed their life...for better, or for worse.
꧁༺ Mipha's Partner ༻꧂

Level-headed, hushed, and still - their entire existence has already been defined before they were put into this world. Purpose, however, has not been granted so generously, for it is earned, and if something so invisible is to be given purpose, they must put their life on the line for the sake of their tribe - especially if it’s for Princess Mipha. When her sake is in question, the honor of protecting her life is done unquestionably. King Dorephan has much faith in her skills, but a father’s worry for his child’s safety is a stubborn force. This spy is distant; their life unknown to most, especially to their dear Princess...but then again, everyone knows she is smart as she is kind.

“Well now,” he hummed. “You’re late. I expected you to seek my aid sooner, little Hero.”
“I-I’m sorry,” Link stammered, caught off guard. He'd expected Link? “I wanted to ask…”
“About your Epona,” Malanya interrupted. He waved a glittering hand and, for a moment, Link’s heart sank. Malanya sounded and looked so casual, so dismissive, that Link expected an instant no.
“It has been one hundred years,” Malanya said, waving a finger in Link’s face. Sparkles landed in his hair. “Yet your Epona still demands I send her back to you. She worries for you, little Hero. Ah, Heroes and their steeds…I admit, I am always impressed by the strength of your dedication to each other. Not many mortals care for their steeds as much as you and your past incarnations have. Why, the Hero of Time was never without his own Epona, and the Hero of Twilight took pity on Ganondorf’s mare, claiming her as his own…Ah, but it is not them we need to speak of.” Malanya drew himself back up, stretching. “Reviving horses takes energy, little Hero. It requires much of my power and energy. To revive a horse that’s been gone for so long…Well, it will exhaust me.”
“Do you need more endura carrots?” Link asked. But, really, when were things ever so easy?
“Ha! I would not say no to such a treat. But no. No, no. If I am to use so much of my power, I want to ensure it will be worth it. She died for you once, little Hero. Can you protect her this time?”
*
During the siege of Highland Stable, the giant stallion comes to Link and Yuki's aid. After the battle, the duo go in search of Malanya.
But if Malanya is going to even consider resurrecting a horse that's been dead for one hundred years, he's going to need some incentive.

LU Avatar AU
I was planning on writing an Avatar AU with a short snippet about each Link and how they felt about bending each element. (Set in Hyrule, but people can bend the elements and the hero is the avatar, who can bend all four elements.)
I decided I didn't like the idea enough to devote anymore time to it, but you guys can have what I've finished
~~~
To Wild, airbending is as instinctual and effortless as breathing. Even more so, perhaps. Zelda had told him she couldn’t recall what element he had been born into. He was sure that if she did remember, she would tell him that he'd been born under the watchful gaze of the air spirits.
He was constantly airbending, so much so that his feet floated more than they touched the solid ground.
He floats in his sleep sometimes. The other avatars don’t mention it, but he knows they’re baffled by it. Everyone always is, when he sleeps somewhere someone will see him.
Wild- and everyone else- had assumed it was an avatar thing, to be able to control the elements even when you were unconscious. But none of the other avatars could bend while they were asleep.
~~~
Wild can barely move pebbles when he tries to earthbend. Zelda says that it’s because he’s a free spirit and doesn’t like to be grounded, but Wild doubts that. Hyrule didn’t seem to have any issue with earth bending, and he was as much of a free spirit as Wild was.
And it’s not like Wild doesn’t try. He does. He trains daily, even if it’s just for a short while. He knows how important earth bending is. But no matter how hard he tried, the solid rock beneath his feet never wanted to move for him.
~~~
When Wild firebends, he dances.
When he woke from the shine, all his bending masters were dead and he had no one to teach him. So he taught himself, using scraps of memories of the champions’ lessons and his own accidental discoveries. That led to some of his bending styles being a bit unique, fire bending most of all. The closest he’s ever seen was the fire dances that the Gerudo did sometimes, in the privacy of their town.
But he’s never seen anyone dance like that during combat, not like he does.
He supposes it doesn’t matter. As long as he’s as deadly with his flames as anyone else, and he is.
~~~
Wild has a hard time waterbending too. He’s better at it than earthbending- at least he could move water around. But it’s never fast, and it's never forceful, so his waterbending is all but useless in combat. This, Wild thinks, is mostly his fault. He could force the water to be more deadly if he tried harder. It’s not like earth bending, where he tries but doesn’t succeed.
Water is a free element. It goes where it wants, when it wants to, and frankly, he’s loath to make it do anything it doesn’t want to. So he never tries very hard to bend it to his will.
~~~
Four had kept the gift quiet, even in his own era. He hadn’t planned on telling the other avatars at all, but he would need something even more precise than his smithing to try and forge an unbreakable sword for the champion.
Metal bending was an extremely rare gift, even for an avatar, and he didn’t like the attention it brought to him when people knew. He was getting that attention now, whether he liked it or not. He could feel the other avatars’ gaze on him. He swore Wind’s star-filled admiring eyes were burning a hole into his back.
He ignored them, focusing all his attention on the metal floating in front of him, slowly taking the form of a sword.
~~~
Wind was born a water bender, as most Hylians on the Great Sea were. He’d never felt more at home than he did when he was standing on the seashore, listening to the waves and feeling the water lap at his bare feet.
There was a comfort in it, knowing the sea would never hurt him. Could never hurt him, even if it tried.

Future's Present
I wrote this drabble because I love the champions and their descendants so much, especially Revali and Tulin. I HAD to write something for them, and here it is :) Please enjoy!
Please note that there are totk spoilers for all four of the Regional Phenomena main quest parts.
Despite the insistence of those at Lookout Landing, Link does not decide to travel up north to the freezing Hebra region first. He instead travels east to Kakariko Village, intent on visiting an old friend, reminiscing on a journey long past.
Zora's Domain was naturally the closest from there. The muck had plagued them and their swimming abilities, so when Link arrived to help, he was tasked with seeking out the Zora Prince.
He hadn't been to Zora's Domain in some time. There was really no way to tell how long it had been between when he and Zelda explored the castle, to when he woke up, after all.
When he arrived and washed off the statue in the main area, Mipha did not greet him. Instead, a beautiful new carving of him riding Sidon to Vah Ruta was in its place.
There's a sting of melancholy.
It really shouldn't be there. Link's had his time to grieve, moreso than so many others were given the privilege.
He doesn't think he could ever love Mipha in the way she did him, but at least he could hold onto her kindness like she'd held onto him with her grace.
It's hard to admit he misses her. All of them.
-
He was told Sidon was located on Ploymus Mountain, stopping the tainted water at the source. When Link arrived, he paused, hand falling from where he'd been holding his weapon.
The Zora had created a beautiful place named 'Mipha Court' in his time away, to honour their fallen princess. Somehow, Link knew she would've adored it.
At the highest point, following the blue stairs with the water that flowed down them, was Mipha's statue. He looks over to the East Reservoir Lake, close to where Ruta used to be.
There's an apology on his lips he can't say. He looks over to Sidon, hyper-focused on his task.
He's glad she's been honoured to the highest degree and loved just as much as when she was alive.
-
He treks through the Eldin mountains next, embracing the not-so-scalding temperatures this time around. While visiting the back of Death Mountain, he notices the Lizard Lakes, reminding him of memories everyone wants to forget. He looks up higher on Death Mountain, only noticing a shrine waiting for him. He takes in a long breath. It was going to be no easy feat to reclimb all the way up.
-
It's off-putting to see so many Gorons unravelled by their new food discovery, and even worse when Yunobo is completely unlike himself by seemingly his princess's cause.
Luckily, the mask he's wearing breaks after a brief scuffle, and Yunobo is more than happy to fight.
As they walk through the city on their way to cure whatever had plagued Death Mountain, the Goron Stone Memorial sits repolished, lights glowing in the eyes of each warrior carved. Daruk sits in the middle of them all, continually overlooking Goron City.
"Do you think it looks alright?" Yunobo asks. "I had some help from my guys at YunoboCo, and I think it turned out pretty good!"
Link nods. Protector, indeed.
Daruk was a man of strength and heart. To see him stand as tall as he did on Rudania eases the ache in Link's heart ever-so-slightly.
-
In the wake of another round of re-exploring Hyrule, Link wonders how easy it will be to travel to someone grounding. Having made up his mind, that's how he ends up all the way across the continent at the Gerudo Hideout's doorstep. His Ascend ability comes into great use, and after explaining his harsh methods, he's redirected to Riju's location.
Her training seems to be having mixed results. She wields lightning as easily as Urbosa once did, but her aim is only truly guided once Link shoots an arrow to the correct destination.
Her pride in her abilities is clear, heralding them with the passion Urbosa once did to protect the people important to her.
The desert is once again shrouded in sand, making many areas unchartable. A certain camel stirs in Link's mind. The tower to see the map (when he could) sat right beside where it used to be. Before his long trek through the Gerudo Desert, he had sat on the steps, looking over it. The dragon that started to reside there made the spot look so small in comparison.
After catching up on the reason for Gerudo Town's vacant state, Link learned of new enemies that came to swarm the Gerudo, and they seemed to have very few vulnerabilities. Riju's power of lightning is useful indeed, being one of the only things able to strike foes down.
When the town is saved, she insists on following an old legend to dispel the sandstorm and kill off the Gibdo, hopefully for good. While preparations are being made, Link departs by her bedroom, happy to see her beloved sand seals upkept.
He passes her diary on the way to the courtyard, eager to hear about the spoils he'd won. However, a few lines catch his attention in passing, and he stops.
Riju speaks of her worries about The Upheaval, which comes from a place of little surprise. Her uneasiness continues into thoughts of Zelda and himself and their disappearance. She talks of the fortifications in place for Gerudo Town and how much she believes she can do against their new enemies. It ends with her speaking and leaving for training, advice Zelda once gave her at the forefront of her mind.
"Oh, Lady Urbosa, if only you were here with us. Watch over us all in these dark times, and keep Zelda and Link safe..."
Link turns away, wandering outside to the courtyard. She's just as quick-witted as he remembers, which comes as no surprise but is a relief nonetheless. She also seems to be the only one to mention Urbosa, her importance still weighing on her mind.
Her fury, her passion; he sees it so clearly in Riju. Urbosa's legacy was well placed in her hands.
If there was only one person to keep the memory of such a woman alive, he's glad it turned out to be her.
-
The Hebra region is cold, much more than usual. The locals he's come across all tell of a never-ending blizzard, one that has broken the Rito's bridge and put their community into a heavy drought from food and shelter.
From the Lucky Clover Gazzette, Link looks forward to the shrouded village. The Gazette isn't far, luckily. It's crowded and homey, with very few travellers and a story-hungry manager, but he's taken a few jobs from there, and it seems to be an alright place.
He huddles by the fire, waiting for morning. He breathes in the cool air and the smell of smoke. He's finally arrived at where he was supposed to go in the very beginning.
After gliding over the bridge to arrive at Rito Village, Link explores what seems to be the vacant spiralled suburb. Snow piles mound from every surface, and all the rooms are empty.
The shops are still open, run by the children of the village.
"The adults are gone," They say. "They went to find food and shelter. We're okay running everything while they're gone, though!"
Link thought being the sacred knight was a weighted burden at sixteen, but even then, he was chosen for it. There was always no hesitance when the thought occurred that he'd do alright. But these children? Running a whole village on their own? It makes him feel a tinge of guilt for not saving Zelda already, and putting this in their hands. Wasn't this something he was born to do?
He finds Tulin, Teba, and Saki talking on a certain landing covered in snow. It's indistinguishable from every other place in the village at this point.
Tulin must be around twelve years old now, claiming his independence with his promising, above-average skill set. Another kid with the weight of their world on his shoulders.
When he notices Link from afar, his eyes light up with glee and excitement. It makes him wonder why it took so long for him to get here.
Tulin has grown, that much is easy to see. Teba sighs and shakes his head once his son eagerly takes off on his next adventure. He tells Link that he can't leave, his new mantle as chief connected to overseeing the village in its darkest hour.
So Link follows, trekking up another mountain and into the mouth of a large cave.
Tulin's gone far, far ahead, exiting out of the other side and glaring up at some monsters. His tenacity is admirable, but it could be seen as foolhardy. Many of the Rito through the cave praised Tulin for his skill but sighed regardless, his lack of cooperation becoming a further frustrating trait. It's an echo of a person Link once knew, this child training to become a champion but seemingly held back by an inner flaw.
Tulin's excitement is still palpable, even once he tells Link his bow was stolen. With his power to control the winds and Link's skill as a halfway decent archer, Tulin retrieves his bow, happier than ever.
As he inspects said item, his smile fades, and his expression downturns.
"Link? I don't think I should've rushed off like that." He clutches his bow closer. "They all warned me, and I didn't listen. I just thought that because I had some better skills, I wouldn't need anyone else's help. I just didn't want to see them hurt, especially when they're all working so hard for the village."
Link's eyes widen, and he wonders if a certain loner would've said the same thing if he'd been this age.
He places a hand softly on his shoulder, rubbing it in what he hopes is a comforting gesture. Tulin peeks up with broad eyes. He dashes into Link's stomach, wings wrapping around his back.
Link hesitantly places both of his arms around the boy in return.
"You know, I really think I get it now. Teaming up with you was so fun! And it makes things a lot easier too." Tulin pulls back. "I think I'm ready. Let's go to the Sky Islands and save Princess Zelda!"
As they fly over, the catharsis settles, and the blizzard seems a little less harsh.
-
The Sky Islands in Hebra are a gigantic collection of ships based on an old myth that was very questionably true until now. Sheets of cloth line nearly every one, creating a space to bounce from ship to ship. As they near the eye of the storm, the wind grows harsher, and even the paraglider has trouble flowing through the gusts of wind. Tulin is just as strong here as he is on the ground, the only tell of struggle through his squinted eyes.
Finally, as the storm reached its apex, one last ship stood in the way. As Tulin bursts Link forward, he latches on to the side of the ship, eventually able to pull himself up. With one more bounce, the clouds clear, and finally, finally, the far edges of the horizon sing in prominence.
The two fall, eyes marvelling at the sky between one held breath- one held moment of stasis and the next.
Vah Medoh had been one thing but was so secluded in comparison. Even though Link had travelled through the sky so much already, he understood Rito's love for it only then.
The center of the storm housed the ship of legend in all of its splendour. With five turbines to activate throughout the three floors of the ship, they were going to be there for some time.
But it was eventually done.
Another of Ganondorf's creations, Colgera, waited for them from beneath.
Link and Tulin were blown into the sky as the giant monster attacked.
By utilizing a combination of well-placed arrows, Tulin's gusts, and dodging the spikes and tornados thrown their way, the monster fell in defeat.
Tulin, upon touching the sacred stone, becomes acquainted with the Imprisoning War from his ancestor and told the same as the other sages.
'The Sage of Wind', they'll now call him. A title heavy for a kid, but accepted wholeheartedly of his own volition. Another guardian has been born into Rito Village.
He looks at Link with pride he's only seen very a few times before. He won't let him, or any of the others, down.
-
Link stumbles by a woman as he makes his way to the top of the village upon their return. She makes passing, polite small talk with him, mentioning Vah Medoh's perch. She says it casually as if it's not a bad thing to remember.
It makes him breathe a sigh of relief as she wanders away.
-
Teba is overjoyed to see the two of them when they return. As their conversation about the Stormwind Ark dies down, Teba turns to his son, unclasping the bow on his back. Tulin looks around in surprise.
"I did tell you that this bow would be yours someday when you came into being a warrior."
Tulin nods, his wings gently wrapping themselves around the bow. Link sees his eyes travel down the blue ribbon attached, and feels his own breath catch.
"Dad... thank you," Tulin says. "I'll prove that I'm a worthy enough warrior to use it."
A small gust ruffles the trees nearby.
Teba nods, Saki behind him smiling. Tulin finally turns to Link.
"I think I'm going to look into the Stormwind Ark to figure out what
happened to Princess Zelda, so I might be gone for a while. But that doesn't mean I'll be gone forever, so come back soon, okay? I might have new information for you!" Link nods. "And don't feel like you're ever alone. I'm the Sage of Wind now, and my avatar will be supporting you for as long as I can!"
Link blinks, a small smile peeking through. He was going to be undoubtedly an unforgettable ally.
-
The adrenaline from his final adventure before the last battle finally wears off as everyone departs for the highest point of Rito Village.
There's no one else around, and the snow has finally melted the village's cold exterior and could finally be inhabited again.
Link turns his head to a sign a little ways away, noting that the Rito had polished it from his last visit with a red and white feather-like trim.
It reads: 'Revali's Landing'.
The pattern on the wood from it has not seemed to age. The Rito symbol sits proudly, even still, a shining beacon of hope for those who come across it.
How fitting that a bow passed from a great warrior, to a fighter and chief, and finally to his proven son was received in that very place.
The Rito did not speak of Revali, it seemed. They, like the rest of the world, had moved on in small ways over one-hundred years.
While his name may not have been spoken, it was softly known. From how well-kept the landing was to the passing of a torch. Tulin had the same force of a gale, and the power few Rito could harness would not go to waste in his care.
Even with such sentiment, Link couldn't help but feel a tad sympathetic for Revali. He would've hated not being mentioned more. He would've hated his sympathy. Link could laugh.
He doesn't.
He kneels down and runs a hand over the largest part of the Rito symbol. A sudden thought comes to him, and he sorts through his bag.
The sun starts to set, and pinks and blues flood the horizon most over the Hebra and Tabantha regions. Link leans up against the post of the landing, limbs too tired to find a proper campfire.
He drifts off to sleep, finally a pseudo-peace lightly blanketing his mind.
-
In the middle of the landing site, three Blue Nightshades lightly ruffle through the wind, steady.
I had forgotten you a lifetime ago, but in this one, I won't allow that memory to be lost.
EXTRA:
Link blinks awake, the full moon high in the sky and darkness shrouding the atmosphere. He stretches, briefly regretting his decision to sleep on the wood.
The flowers he'd placed sit peacefully, untouched. Maybe he'd backtrack a little with the idea now in mind. Maybe put some Swift Violets in the middle of Mipha Court? Or Sundelions in front of the giant Goron Statue? Or even Electric Safflina on Riju's desk?
A pitter-patter of footsteps worms its way around until the source is at his side.
"Sorry, I didn't wake you up, did I?" Tulin asks.
Link shakes his head.
"Phew, that's good. Couldn't sleep?"
Link parses with the thought for a moment. He tilts his head from side to side with a sheepish half-smile.
Tulin smiles, taking a seat next to Link. "Me neither. I mean, I'm so glad to be the Sage of Wind! But... I guess I've never really thought about what that meant. More exciting new adventures for sure!" He looks to the moon. "I know we can protect Hyrule. It's just a matter of time!"
Link nods quickly, smile stretching.
"It's nice to see the sky so clear again. You can actually see the moon!"
Link agrees. He hopes Tulin notices.
They sit in silence for a few more minutes, Tulin's eyes still on the sky.
"I like the flowers, by the way," Tulin says softly. "I'll make sure they won't get hurt while I'm around."
Link nods appreciatively.
"You know, I actually met Master Revali once before. It was a long time ago, and I don't fully remember what happened because I was so young, but I ask Dad about it as often as I can, because he was there too!" Link stares, wide-eyed. "Dad told me I accidentally followed him into a portal back in time, where the calamity was stopped, and no one died!"
Tulin's eyes glow.
"Master Revali saved me that day! He's really just as great as everyone said! And a lot nicer once you get to know him." Tulin chuckles. "I have his bow now. I told him one day I'd be worthy of it! I wish he could've seen me master it!"
Tulin falls back onto a post with a yawn.
"Link, do you think- since you knew- ugh, actually, never mind." He shakes his head.
Link tilts his head to the side in a questioning look. He hopes it's comforting enough for Tulin to keep going and be unashamed of doing so.
"It's kind of a stupid question." He laughs awkwardly. "Like I know dad already is, and I don't have to prove anything to anyone but- do you think that... Master Revali would've been proud of me?"
Link's eyes widen twofold, and for one of the very few times in his life, he acts on an impulsive emotion alone. He reaches behind Tulin, clutching him in his arms. He shakes his head up and down vigorously, unsure if the kid can even feel it.
"You really think so?" Oh no, he sounds a little sad. "Thank you, Link!" Tulin laughs openly instead. "Thank you so much!" He reciprocates the hug, a wide smile pressed into Link's upper shoulder.
When they pull away, the moon has already lowered significantly from the start of their conversation. Tulin yawns again.
"I'm guessing you're going to have to leave tomorrow morning? Lots of stuff to get ready for the final fight, right?"
Link finds himself reluctantly nodding.
"That's okay! I know you and everyone else are going to do awesome, Link!" Tulin yawns a third time. "I'd invite you to where we live for the night, but there's not that much room. Do you mind if I stay out here tonight?"
Link shakes his head.
"Awesome." Tulin leans his own head against Link's shoulder. "Good night, Link. And thanks for everything."
Sleep comes to the pair far easier this time.
-
At the same time, for the briefest of seconds, the water calms in every lake. The rocks and lava silence their thunder. A faraway bolt of lightning strikes an enemy. A light breeze ruffles through a trio of flowers, the chosen knight, and the Rito's upcoming greatest warrior.
Riju writes another entry into her diary, the next day looking even more promising.
Yunobo says goodnight to every Goron still awake after a hard day at work.
Sidon watches a shooting star fall from afar from the King's throne, attaching every single hope he has onto it.
A blissful peace settles over Hyrule. Even though there are many challenges yet to overcome, for one night, everything seems like it might turn out okay.

the true story of mipha's grace.
NPC POV | Miphlink and Zelink | multichapter | rated T
also on Ao3
As promised in celebration of 500 followers on tumblr: A thematic successor to desire path and thank you for listening in which we are getting zelink from a NPC POV as well as a metaphor through nature. I wanted to give Mipha some love because I often seen (and have done this myself) her placed in a negative or shallow light with respect to Link and Zelda's relationship in botw. I also believe deeply you can love someone completely and not be meant for each other and that is okay. Follows Mipha's diary entries/Champions' Ballad. Suggested listening: What Was I Made For - Billie Eilish thank you to @zeldaelmo for beta reading this <3 you are tremendous!! And a shout out to @mistresslrigtar who took a little sneak peek for me (:
Chapter 1
notes: mipha's diary entries 1-3
They say the Divine Beasts are meant to resemble ancient creatures native to their region of origin. Mipha knows rivers flow all over and the sea is vast, but she’s never seen anything like Vah Ruta. She stands in the company of her father, King Dorephan, and others in various positions of leadership among the Zora in the belly of the ancient machine. They gather in shallow water that surrounds the main terminal, which has remained dormant since the excavation from the lake depths, having a preliminary discussion about pilot nominations. Allegedly, the Princess of Hyrule has been quietly making rounds across the realm, asking for “Champions” to operate the Divine Beast in the prophesied battle against the Calamity. Zora’s Domain is to be her last stop.
“This is the mighty weapon of the Zora?” Trello, captain of the Zora Knights, asks flatly.
“Capable of drowning legions of enemies and freezing the water in the air into boulders of ice it can hurl like a trident, or so the Sheikah researchers say,” Seggin replies.
“It doesn’t resemble any fish I’ve seen. Jiahto, were you able to locate anything in the texts?” Muzu asks.
“We once had a hunting group bring back fish with a nose like a sword from the Faron Sea, but this machine’s nose is flexible. There were seals, albeit mammals not fish, that once lined the Akkala island cliffs. Like those found in the Gerudo desert, these had similar tusks and were round in shape, but they balanced on flippers and lacked the ears and proboscis,” the Zora researcher says. “That is what this type of nose is called. Commonly referred to as a trunk.” Jiahto is Mipha’s least favorite member of the newly appointed Royal Council. “Undignified, if you ask me.”
“I think it’s cute.” Mipha says, gazing up at the carving of the Sheikah eye in the stonework.
“Cute?” Jiahto balks and then continues,“I heard the Goron’s Divine Beast is shaped like a fire lizard and the Rito’s an eagle. This familiarity will give them an advantage in their mastery, for sure. Our pilot needs to be wise enough to understand the ways of this mysterious creature.”
“I believe it is called an elephant.” Mipha lifts up her finger.
“How do you know that?” Jiahto’s fin’s fold tight against his scales. Imagine that, someone with knowledge he doesn’t yet possess!
“I asked the Sheikah.” Mipha shrugs.
“It is cute,” her father agrees. He flashes a big black eye down at her and she smiles. Jiahto is also his least favorite member of the Council.
Muzu speaks up,“Just because it is unfamiliar, doesn’t not mean it is impractical. I’m sure our fins and gills are very curious to Hylians, too. And yet, look who they call upon when there is trouble in the waters?”
“And they will call upon us again. Very soon.” Her father looks over his shoulder through the openings in Vah Ruta’s walls. “According to the Sheikah, the Divine Beasts require someone worthy enough to control them. So while we might make our selection, I believe the Divine Beast will make the final determination.”
They begin to discuss among themselves. Jiahto favors a wise choice, and offers himself. Trello, a strong choice, and recommends one of his knights. Seggin, seconds it should be a knight, but recommends a different Zora. Muzu wonders if they should conduct trials for nominees to prove their worth. Dento, another Council member and a blacksmith, seems content to listen and occasionally grunts disapprovingly to stir up more debate.
Her father has drifted away from them quietly, a feat seemingly impossible for someone so large and yet, he goes unnoticed toward the terminal, with his eyes still fixed on the Domain. Mipha moves to join him.
“I fear the arrival of the Princess will bring tremendous danger to our home,” he says quietly.
Mipha sets her hand on his arm. It pains her to see him worried, but this is not a wound she can heal. It is the price of Kingship. “Father, if the prophecy of Calamity Ganon’s return is really coming true, could she also be seen as a symbol of hope? That she brings not danger, but a solution?”
Her father finally pulls his gaze away from the Domain and smiles at her. “You have grown into a wise Zora, my daughter. Seggin also tells me you are quite ferocious with that Lightscale trident. You will be a powerful, sensible, and beloved leader for our people one day.”
Mipha squeezes her father’s arm, pride swirling in her chest, and steps back toward the terminal. There is a sudden shutter through the Divine Beast, a song of churning gears echoing through the chambers. The terminal blinks to life, a cool, inviting blue spreading across the intricate carvings. Mipha feels the machine’s eye on her somehow, like the spotlight of the moon, and it is the most seen she has ever felt in her entire life. It doesn’t feel like a choice, like favor. It feels like destiny. All at once, the secrets of Vah Ruta wash over her. She knows how to raise the trunk to bring the rain, how to blast beams of ice from the tusks, how to aim a mighty beam of burning light straight across Hyrule. If she were to lift her feet now, she is sure Vah Ruta would walk with her. All of this becomes her, like it’s been there all along, in a single pulse of blue light into the next.
“Me?” Mipha whispers, bringing her hand up to trace the silver across her chest.
“Absolutely not!” Muzu lunges forward and pulls Mipha back by the shoulders. Seggin is there too, with his weapon brandished, like the terminal might sprout hands and attempt to grab her. Dento and Trello jump in front of her, making a shield with the bodies. Even Jiahto is there, so agitated by the terminal's sudden glow, that his normally blue scales look purple.
“But-” Mipha starts, trying to find the words to describe to them what just happened, but Seggin cuts her off.
“It will pick someone else,” he commands loudly toward the terminal, his voice echoing off the walls.
“You are meant to be a healer!” says Dento.
“A leader!” says Trello.
“But maybe I can-” Mipha tries to pull her arms free from Muzu’s hold, but his hands are ironclad against her scales. Her father stands before her horrified, the spines of his fins flared, eyes wide on the terminal. She can see a strange conflict ripple across his face. He says something in old Zora, so low and guttural that she feels it vibrate the metal beneath her feet. She doesn’t know what he says and the terminal doesn’t answer. It just glows. She hears Muzu gasp.
Her father waves his hand and the council starts to corral her back away toward the exit.
“Father, please, I can help if you just–”
“Danger is coming to Zora’s Domain. We need you here, Mipha. Your duty is with your people,” her father says. “It will pick someone else.”
Behind him, the terminal blinks once and then dims.
“But aren’t all Zora strong swimmers?”
Mipha looks down at her younger brother, his eyes crinkled up at her with an eagerness she finds most delightful, and takes a deep breath to prepare herself for the lengthy, repetitive explanation it often demands. Only eight springs have passed since he hatched, and although he is strong, he is still too young to join his peers in the Dive. Mipha offered to advise him individually in effort to evade more interrogations from the Council about what occurred on Vah Ruta the day prior and now finds herself standing on the banks of Ruto Lake just after dawn, teaching him the ways of the water which are best learnt after at least noon.
But Sidon is excited and thankfully no longer crying, and very ready, so here they are.
“Yes. But being a strong swimmer does not guarantee safety. Water is indefinitely wild. Misleading. Dangerous when it wants to be. To be a Zora is to know all the secret languages of water.”
Sidon sticks out his chin. His tailfin, which hangs the length of him off the back of his head and folds on the ground behind his feet, sags with disappointment. “O-kay.”
Mipha pats his shoulder gently. She isn’t so far removed from her own Dive and those innocent years prior not to remember how he is feeling. The agony of waiting. The constant yearning to be bigger without comprehending what you are asking for. What you are wishing away. “You are a strong swimmer. And you will be a smart one, too. The very smartest once you know how to identify the different currents: undertows, rip currents, riptides–”
“There are different currents?” Sidon interrupts.
Mipha shakes her head. “Yes. Depending on what kind of water you are in – a river, a lake, a bay – what time of day, the status of the tide.”
“But does it really matter if you are a strong enough swimmer?” Sidon tilts his head so dramatically that the black feather on his headpiece nearly touches the ground.
“See these tiny waves here?” She points down to her feet as a small rush of clear water washes over her toes. Her fins flex against the chill. “No matter how big or how small, the water pushed by a wave needs a way of traveling back out to the larger body of water. In this case, the lake. A rip current isn’t part of the waves lifespan like an undertow is–”
“Wait, they aren’t the same thing?” Sidon gasps.
“A rip current doesn’t pull you under, it will pull you out. A rip current is created when the water a wave pushes up onto shore finds a fast opening back out. Usually a beak in the sandbar floor. This creates a narrow path of very strong water and will pull even the strongest of swimmers away from the shore. It is especially dangerous near open water like the sea, but they can occur in any body of water with breaking waves. If you are Zora, you know how to spot and beat the rip current.”
“Beat the rip current?” Sidon makes a fist and pumps it excitedly.  “How do I do that?”
“In time, in time.” Mipha wipes the sleep from her eyes and suppresses a yawn. “First you need to learn to spot it.”
“So what’s an undertow, then?”
“Think about when we’ve been bodysurfing in Necluda. That feeling when the wave sort of pulls you right up under the crest of it? Right before you catch and can ride it all the way up onto the beach? An undertow is the pull of a wave right before it crashes down.”
Sidon fans his arms out like he’s flying or floating. “It’s so fun!”
Mipha sets her hands on his and eases them back down to his sides. “Yes, surfing is. It is important to know how you are having that fun, though. And what to do if the waves and that undertow grow too strong.”
Sidon nods and sets his brows low. He does this when he’s ‘thinking extra hard’. It always makes Mipha smile.
“What about a riptide?”
For some reason, Mipha’s eyes turn upward. The moon is pale against the bright morning sky, on its way down to the horizon where it will sleep and rise again with dusk. Her eyes land on the southern wall of the reservoir where just beyond, Vah Ruta stands dormant in the center of the lake. “A riptide, well, a riptide is similar to a rip current because they can pull you out from the shore, but a riptide is much stronger and fixed.” Mipha glances up. “Riptides are connected to the tide. To the moon. Whereas rip currents are created, can pop up and disappear...riptides just are.”
“Like the ten-year storm?” Sidon asks.
Mipha smiles. “Just like that.”
Like clockwork– like it’s written in the very stars that shine over Zora’s Domain itself, dating back to time immemorial even to the mighty Zora, the Lanayru Region has been plagued by torrential rainfall in the wet season once every ten years.
It’s funny, to say there is anything other than a wet season for a province completely surrounded by and defined by water, but everything from the flora to the fauna know this rhythm and pay due respect. For despite its necessity to every living thing in all of Hyrule, an overabundance of water will mercilessly and swiftly drown anything that underestimates it. Even the Zora.
Thankfully, flooding hasn’t been a problem for the Zora since long before Mipha’s great-grandfather’s grandfather was even born. The reservoir, marking the ancient intersection of Zora architecture and Hylian engineering, contains the most destructive torrents when the heavy rains come. The waters around the Domain still swell though, and the gentle river named for Mipha’s people whips like a powerful tailfin across Hyrule. It replenishes every shallow stream, every thirsty lake and pond and marsh along the way, even reinforcing the protective gully around Hyrule Castle itself with enough water to sustain life for the next decade.
Muzu says the Zora River is the vein that connects Hyrule’s heart and brain. He’s never clarified which is which, so Mipha likes to imagine her people are the heart of Hyrule.
That means that when waves that started around her feet finally crash against the stone walls that cradle Hyrule Castle, Link hears the echoes from inside the knight's quarters there, and it sounds just like her heart beating.
The distant struggle of her people during these storms is memorialized by the stone monuments that surround her home. It is the duty of a Zora King to recast the tablets during their reign, adding new wisdom in reflection and relevant current events to the chronicle. The monuments of the past kings are transferred to the waters under the Domain and set into the crystal pillars with luminous stone. Muzu says this is why the Zora live longer than any people in Hyrule. Not only do they record events, but they learn from the past, bear witness to how it is retold, and use that wisdom to literally reinforce the framework of dominium they call home.
The significance of the Dive ceremony is twofold. The first involves a collective review of the old monuments under Zora’s Domain. Every Zora swims as deep as they can – no one has ever claimed to find the bottom. A millennium or so ago, it is said Zora from the Lanayru Sea, the same group her father’s family came from, traveled to the Domain and a Zora almost as massive as her father now, with teeth like a saw blade, dove into the darkness, not emerging again for over ninety minutes, and still could not find the bottom.
Secondly, it is a significant milestone for the youngest Zora who dive from the East Reservoir Lake into the waters surrounding the Domain to formally join the community.  Only after the fall, when they’ve chosen the water and not the sky, are they said to be blessed with the long life of the Hyrule Zora.
Mipha remembers fondly when she completed the Dive. A Zora isn’t eligible to make the Dive until their fins are fully matured. She’s given up trying to understand how Hylians age. Something about candles and sugar bread makes them taller and stronger. For the Zora, it takes wet seasons, sometimes five, sometimes fifteen. The ten-year storm always comes when it's meant to. Clockwork, stars and all that.
But what else felt written in the stars that day, along with the rain that fell from the sky in sheets (she’d overheard Seggin say it was pissing rain that storm in particular), was it was also the day she met Link. The Zora aren’t secretive when it comes to their traditions. Their history is literally written in stone for any traveler to study. The terrain surrounding the Domain just creates a natural barrier, like the volcanic mountain that surrounds the rock-people’s city to the north or the miles of shadeless desert around the Gerudo to the south. Most travelers prefer easier paths.
Nevertheless, Mipha’s father’s father began sending out official invitations to witness the Dive to each region leader every ten years. For a long time, no one came. The journey for the Gerudo is long and dangerous especially when you account for the fact the request requires them to travel in weather they are unaccustomed to. The weather also keeps the Rito away and the Sheikah prefer to remain hidden despite rumors the Hylian King took a Sheikah advisor shortly after the royal Princess was born. The Goron are happy to stay on their mountain, but always send their signature “rock roast” with well-wishes for strength. The Hylians in the outskirts of the Central Hyrule, those that cling to the warm waters in Faron or line the cliffs facing the Necluda sea with giant windmills rarely stray from the main roads that all lead to Hyrule center, especially with the recent rumors of the monster populations increasing.
So it came as a bit of a surprise when a modest-sized group of them from Akkala, albeit the majority soldiers from the citadel there, appeared on the Great Zora Bridge, soaking wet and eager for shelter and good company. Their newly appointed captain, a fisherman turned soldier, had intercepted the invitation on route to the newly founded Ancient Technology Laboratory and couldn’t pass up the opportunity to share his admiration for the Zora with his regiment. He claimed to have interacted with many during his years at sea and credited one group in particular with saving his life when his ship capsized during a storm.
Mipha’s father was ecstatic to share her Dive with the Hylians. He expanded the feast, opened the dry guest chambers, and personally escorted the Hylians up the mountainside, stopping to read each stone monument to them and answer any curious questions. From what Mipha recalls, there weren't many, but she was also distracted by the captain’s profoundly energetic four-year-old son. She didn’t even know his name, a detail somehow lost amongst the bustle of adults enjoying deep conversation and the constant pattering of rain. She resorted to calling him ‘little boy!’ and was so busy keeping him from slipping off the cliffs or irritating a hidden, otherwise non-hostile octorock, that she almost forgot what they were climbing for until they were at the top and her people were waiting.
As she looked over the edge of the reservoir and gazed upon the dark and distant waters below, she was overcome with the feeling this was more than just a flying leap. She knew what to expect – the sensation of her stomach floating in her belly, her eyes becoming so wind-whipped that she teared up, the rush of cool air across her fins when she finally hit the water, but for Mipha, daughter of the King Zora, the late Queen’s living shadow, with fins fitted for nobility and braced for elegance, the ceremonial Dive was more than formally joining her community. It was the abandonment of her juvenility. A mysterious transformation that never made much sense to her, as if by some ancient magic sparked by the speed of her fall and the embrace of her Domain, she would emerge from the waters and be suddenly mature. Responsible. Boring.
“Little girl?”
Mipha turned and spotted the Hylian boy, blond hair slick against his pale skin, his eyes so prominent on his face that she was able to see they shined bluer than the  sapphires on her newly placed silver gorget.
“I’m not a little girl,” Mipha corrected him. “If you were paying attention instead of trying pester that poor octorock, you would have heard completing this Dive means I’m an adult.”
The Hylian scrunched up his face and moved his hands in front of him intentionally.
Mipha frowned. He sighed and cleared his throat a few times, as if suddenly unable to find his voice in his throat.
“Oh, do you speak with your hands?” Mipha asked.
The boy shook his head eagerly.
“And sometimes you speak out loud?”
The boy gestured in a way that implied that was correct.
Mipha softened a little. “I'm afraid I don’t know too much, I only just started my study on foreign languages as a part of my training, but…” She signed the letter slowly and spoke. “M-I-P-H-A.”
The boy’s face lit up. He looked up at her with those sapphire eyes, big and round and filled with wonder, like she had used magic to heal a hidden wound. “L-I-N-K.”
“Link?”
“Yes.” He found his voice and laughed.
“Right, well, it’s nice to meet you, Link.” She felt her cheeks fill with warmth and was thankful for the camouflage of her crimson scales. “So no more of this little girl or little boy business!”
He tilted his head curiously.
“You really weren’t paying attention were you. The Dive, becoming an adult, all of that?”
Link shook head disbelievingly and lifted his eyebrows.
“I will be,” Mipha insisted with her hands on her hips.
He waved his hands about himself flippantly, implying ‘me too, eventually’.
“You are still very much a kid, I am afraid to say.” Mipha said.
Link suddenly took a step closer and used his hand to measure their heights. She was a good half a foot taller than him at least. He peered past her over the edge of the cliffs and then back at the adults–Hylian and Zora alike, lost in their chatter.
“Will you still look like a kid? When it’s done?” He asked.
Although magic was known by the Zora, the manipulation of water by some, healing art by others, there was no natural sorcery that could age the body rapidly. Everyone she’d ever seen complete the Dive looked the same after. “Yes, I think so.”
“So what changes?”
Mipha thought for a moment, wringing her hands together, not wanting to speak out loud her fears of maturity and duty. “I suppose nothing.”
“Okay, so you’ll come play with me some more when you are finished? Please?”
His father came then and fetched him back to observe. And her father was there with Muzu and Seggin and the other Elders, giving a speech about tradition and honor and ceremony. He spoke at length about his daughter, a Princess, and his hope for her path, the promise of her stature, but when Mipha leapt forward off the side of the cliff, all she could think about racing Link around the home sculpture, skipping rocks across the Bank of Wishes, and learning as much as she could about Hylian sign language.
And when she finally emerged from the waters, that’s exactly what she did.
“But which one is the most dangerous, sister?” Sidon tugs at her pectoral fin, pulling Mipha from her thoughts.
“I’m sorry,” Mipha says, shaking her head. “I was adrift in thought. What now?”
“A riptide, a rip current, or an undertow. Which is most dangerous?”
“If you can’t recognize when you’ve been caught in one, they are all, my dear Sidon,” Mipha says, her eyes drifting back toward the reservoir. Years have passed since that day. And while the friendship that grew from their first meeting allowed Mipha to hold onto her adolescence a little longer, she and Link had indeed grown up. Seven of his Hylian years were spent primarily in her Domain, and during them, they both grew taller, his voice (when he used it) became deeper, and their days filled with less play and more training for war. The Calamity prophecy came from the west followed shortly by a call to arms from the Hylian King. Link was a tremendous swordsman, so it came as no surprise when his father was summoned from Akkala to the castle, Link left as well.
They wrote letters for many years. Mostly, Link lamented about the poor quality of food, longing for slices of raw salmon and blue crab legs and dried seaweed with salt. He mentioned there was talk about making him a soldier and then sometime later, rumors he was being considered for the Royal Guard after he returned from the hostile Great Hyrule Forest unscathed and wielding a sword with a blade like moonlight. But he also reminisced about their time together freely, how she taught him how to swim and he taught her how to parry and the time he tried to jump off the reservoir and broke both his legs. Mipha had fetched him from the water, healed him, and refused to speak to him for a week.
He also said even though it is not permitted, if they make him a Royal Guard, he’ll still wear her earrings. She never found out how that fared. He hasn’t returned her letters in a year.
“Mipha?” Sidon slips his little hand into hers.
“Sorry, sorry, what was the question again?” Mipha shakes her head. The silver charms that adore her fins jingle like bells.
“Someone’s coming,” he says.
“What?” Mipha looks over her shoulder. Above them, halfway across Luto's Crossing, is a lone horseman decorated with the colors of the Hylian Royal Family. And although she hasn't seen him in five years, she knows she could recognize his silhouette even if it had been a hundred. For a moment, she forgets about what happened inside Divine Beast Ruta. She forgets about the Council and duty and destiny.
She cups her mouth with her trembling hands and shouts: “Link!”
The horseman stops. His face finds the sunlight. His jawline is sharper and his skin is tan, but his eyes still shine like sapphires. He lifts his hand up above his head and signs her name.
Mipha takes off running.

Link makes vanilla cinnamon scented sushi
Link Makes Vanilla Cinnamon Scented Sushi (California Rolls!) (and it's not bad tbh) is a smutty, comedic Miphzelink fic! It takes place post-Calamity in an au where Mipha lives. The title is honestly a little misleading, since it’s just a temporary title, but it’s a funny fic nonetheless. Here’s a clip:
Zelda sat down. “What did you make? It smells divine.”
“Sushi,” Link replied.
Mipha sat across from him, a puzzled look on her face. Zelda imagined she herself wore the same look. This smell was not sushi. It was vanilla-ey and cinnamon-ey, with a dash of some sort of citrus under it. “How?”
“Hmm?”
“How does sushi smell like this? Like a pastry.”
“Oh,” he pointed to a pot on the stove. “Read that if you boil different dyes, it smells like the dye’s ingredients.”
“Why not just boil the ingredients?”
“Didn’t think about it too hard. California roll?”
Zelda took a California roll, which was named after King California of Hyrule IV, from hundreds of years ago. The tale goes that he loved the dish so much, he demanded it be named after him. Before then, it was called a crab-cucumber-rice-seaweed-avocado roll. The name was a bit wordy, so not many people minded that it had been changed. Some of the older Zora still used the pre-King California IV name, but he wasn’t their king to begin with, and he was dead now, so he couldn’t do much about it.
He died doing what he loved; chasing his wife with a booger on his hand. He fell down the stairs and broke his neck, dying instantly, booger still in hand. He was not a very mature king, and not many people missed him. California rolls were served at the funeral.
His last will and testament stated that he wished to serve the California rolls from a plate in his corpse’s hands, but that was vetoed by the queen. She also ignored his wish to keep the booger in his hand during his burial. She had fallen out of love with him during their marriage for obvious reasons, and did not mind that he was dead. She remarried three months later to a man who never chased her with anything.
Zelda thought of how King California IV was such an awful king. It reminded her of all her duties as queen. She ran through her to do list in her head.

The Eyes of Fate || Sooga (LoZ) x OC
Tumblr media
Summary:
“You can go your whole life not believing in fate or destiny, and then one day, you find somebody so right for you, at such a right time and place, you won’t know what to call it.”
— Mark Anthony.
Sooga looks behind him one last time for a very long time. He pauses — the warrior felt conflicted. “It’s not supposed to be so difficult. I’ve been a ruthless warrior since childhood, but why is it hard to say goodbye to her?”
“Will you wait for me?” Sooga asked. The question itself felt like a promise that she would be seeing him again. She smiled at him despite her eyes tearing up, and ran into his arms. “Of course, I will.” Anya’s words held nothing but the truth as they pulled back to look at each other despite him having his mask on. “I’ll wait for you in this and any other lifetime we may have.” She added.
Sooga pulled his mask up only to his lips and pressed a soft kiss against her forehead. For the young woman managed to make her way into his heart.
“Come home to me, please.” She urged. “I will.” Sooga replied.
Notes:
Holy shit, this is my first fanfic ever. 😅 be nice, please.
Also none of the characters in the Legend of Zelda are mine except for my original character(s) of course. This fanfiction will contain violence, foul language and mayyyyyybe smut. If I don’t chicken out to write it. So if you’re a minor, please don’t proceed any further.
Sooooooo I’ve been playing Zelda: Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity and might’ve joined the Sooga simp club in the process of getting through the game. Also I can’t believe there’s hardly any stories about him. 😭 it should be a crime. Anyways, I decided to make a fanfic about the man himself, Sooga; following the events of Age of Calamity but with my own twist of course. So without a further ado, here’s The Eyes of Fate.
————————
Being Princess Zelda’s handmaiden had its perks such as becoming best friends with her royal highness and learning new skills and seeing the many wonders Hyrule had to offer. Anya would even give her own life to protect the princess and she had no problem with it. In fact, she wouldn’t change being Zelda’s handmaiden for anything else in the world.
“My job will be the only thing I’ll ever love.” She joked. “I can’t wait to see you when you’re in love.” Zelda bantered. She playfully rolled her eyes and smiled widely at the princess.
————————
Anya gazes at the night sky through her window at the Hyrule Castle as she sets her book down and sighed. “Whatever is the matter?” Zelda inquired as Anya slightly jumped at the princess’s voice despite her talking softly.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you.” Zelda apologized and Anya shook her head. “It’s okay.” She remarked. The two of them sat in silence for a moment and the princess glanced at her. “So are you going to tell me what’s the matter?” She probed as Anya just smiled in response.
“I do not wish to burden you with my problems, Princess.” Anya stated and as she turned back to face the window, she could see Zelda’s are you shitting me right now expression through the reflection of the window’s glass. “And I’ve told you a million times to drop the formalities — you’re like family. Like my sister.”
She turned to face Zelda, with her undivided attention and began, “I’m just a bit concerned about what the future holds.” Anya admitted. “I know we all have our duty to fulfill. Mine is like Link’s — to protect you from harm.” As a handmaiden, it was required not only that she had the knowledge to mend the princess’s clothing if needed, but also combat skills. By the King’s orders. So he made sure that Anya would be a formidable warrior. Medical knowledge was also amongst the skills she possessed.
“Everything will be okay.” Zelda reassured her as she faintly smiled. “Shouldn’t I be the one listening to your worries and comforting you right after?” Anya asked, as she genuinely grinned this time.
“Just because you’re my handmaiden doesn’t mean that you carry all your worries on your shoulders.” Zelda stated matter of factly and embraced her.
“Oh!” Anya was slightly surprised as she hugged her friend back. “Thank you, Zelda.” She whispered and the princess nodded. “See? That’s better. The dropping of the formalities.” Zelda smiled back at her dearest friend and headed towards the door.
“I’ll see you tomorrow, get some rest. And that’s an order from the princess.” Zelda remarked. “Yes, ma’am, good night princess.” Anya called out. “Good night.”
——————————
That night, the moment Anya’s head hit the pillow, she slept so soundly. She kept the window of her bedroom slightly open to feel the warm summer breeze, the moonlight shining so beautifully and the crickets chirped softly lulling her to sleep so fitfully.
Who would’ve ever known that’d be the last peaceful night in Hyrule before the threat of the Calamity awakening soon prompting everyone in Hyrule to be on edge.
Around dawn, a monster sighting just outside the castle attempting to break in is what had everyone in the kingdom putting their armors on and gathering their weapons. Anya braided her hair and grabbed her sword as she rushed outside. Captain Hoz, Link and the other knights were already training with each other due to the report that more monsters had been spotted.
“This is worse than I thought…” King Rhoam commented to himself as he watched through a balcony. The King knew better than to have his people worrying and scaring them off so he’d usually have a stoic expression despite his own worries. Especially for his daughter, who had yet to awaken her sealing powers.
Anya was practicing sparring with Link as hordes of monsters started rushing towards the castle. Link glanced over and she silently nodded as Link, Anya and the other knights started taking down the monsters just outside of the castle. “Look out!!” Captain Hoz called out as a Moblin’s spear nearly hit Link. The young knight skillfully dodged the blow at the last second and took down the monster with ease. “That was a close one.” Hoz stated. “Thank you.” Link replied as he noticed something strange laying near him. He approached the strange relic and soon realized it was a small guardian in a dormant state. “What’s that?” Anya asked, looking down at the small thing on the floor.
“It’s a guardian but I doubt it still works. It’s probably been lying here for who knows how long.” Link replied. As he carefully examined the small guardian, Impa rushed into the Hyrule field with the sheikah slate on her hands and bokoblins chasing after her. “You! Help!” Impa called out to them. Link rushed to her aid as she toppled on the floor and the sheikah slate flew out of her hand. Anya rushed to try and catch the slate but Link’s quick reflexes caught it on time; just as the small guardian awoke and the ground began to violently shake.
“What the—…” Anya started.
“Why is this happening?” Impa questioned while the bokoblins rushed towards them. Link was ready to strike one of the small monsters down as a tower emerged from the ground and they lost sight of the monsters.
“It’s… a tower?” Impa queried.
For a moment the three of them forgot about the small guardian until it beeped and they turned to face it.
“My curiosity is more focused on this little guy.” Anya stated. “Hmmm… an inexplicable guardian. And a mysterious tower.” Impa commented.
“I hate to say it but we have little hope of figuring this one out on our own.” Anya added.
“That's true.” Impa agreed. “Hey! What are you—?!” She shrieked as Impa chased after the little guardian as the little guy rushed off. Anya and Link glanced at each other and then took after Impa as well. The three of them went after the guardian but lost sight of it when they came across the King, where he was addressing the knights and commended them for taking down the monsters.
“Each of you has served your kingdom admirably.” King Rhoam announced.
The three of them walked in silence and stopped at the first gatehouse where Zelda came from. She was wearing a beautiful navy blue dress with gold accents and white ruffles along with a small tiara. Link stared until Anya nudged him and threw him a knowing smirk and the young knight slightly blushed.
Ah young love. Anya thought.
“I heard about the monsters that attempted to make their way into the castle. I’m so glad to see you’re all okay.” Zelda verbalized.
“The training has really paid off to keep you safe, your highness.” Anya responded.
Despite their discussion last night about dropping the formalities when addressing the princess, Anya couldn’t bring herself to do so in front of others. She had to set an example. And the princess seemed to notice.
“You made it! I’m glad you made it safe, Impa.” Zelda added.
Link kneeled before her as Impa nodded.
“Yes. Though I couldn’t have done it without them since I was being chased by bokoblins, so thank you.” Impa acknowledged. “And I’ve received the Sheikah slate from Purah.”
Anya, Link and Impa had forgotten about their new little friend and at that moment, the little guardian rushed towards the princess but Link managed to grab it just in time and held it up in the air whilst it beeped repeatedly.
“Hmm? What is that?” Zelda asked curiously.
“Your highness!” Impa addressed the princess and showed her the Sheikah slate’s screen activating simultaneously with the small guardian.
“Do you think the little guy also has something to do with the strange tower that emerged from the ground?” Aryll inquired.
“Perhaps, we’re going to have to study about it.” Impa answered.
Notes:
I’ve finally brought my fanfic here from AO3. Also I should mention that my character is 21 years old in the first few chapters.
And lastly the chapters will eventually get longer. My impatient self can’t wait for Sooga and Anya to come across each other for the first time lol.

Reblogs/comments are greatly appreciated.

I've spent my entire morning (so like two hours now, as I'm typing this out into my Drafts) wondering why I don't have to make any edits to Trial of the Zora Armor despite having to make edits to Successors and just completely re-do ToZA's original mess of a prequel.
And I realized something
When I wrote ToZA, I didn't care about a lot. I didn't care about your opinions, your headcanons, etc.
I only cared about making it as canon as humanly possible
Literally half the point of writing that 42K word monstrosity when I had never finished anything before in my life specifically was to see if I could explain away the Zora Armor. (Hint hint for why ToZA is called that)
That fic would determine whether I shipped Link with Zelda or Mipha, because I only wanted to ship the most canon ship (I still do, but that's beside the point). If I could do this successfully, then I'd ship ZeLink? Failure? MiphLink
The fact that I'm a ZeLink shipper even for Age of Calamity tells you I succeeded, but that's another can of worms.
However! Even before I had the Wolfbred, even while Link was still a Hylian in my AU
Mipha was teaching me about Wolfbred culture.
And that's why Trial is my favorite fic I've ever written. I bought Creating A Champion specifically to help me write that book. I left BotW running in the background 90% of the time I was typing. It considers only the canon (ZeLink baby at the time of Calamity aside of course), so I wasn't influenced by much fanon when I wrote it down. And because of that, now that Hyrule's Final Stand is a full-blown AU, it still exists flawlessly.
If I could only publish one fic, I'd publish that one.
I'd love to have a book-bound version some day.

Ch. 5: Spirit's Eve - Sketch and Final
What was supposed to be teasing/bullying from Cawlin turned out to be a new plan for a Spirit's Eve costume! Dressing line each other for Spirit's Eve was a perfect idea, and Link's mom, Uli, was more than happy to put everything together for them!
This was one of the final art pieces I actually did, since I was burnt out and had no ideas how to make it unique. I decided to make an attempt at emulating my friend @snail-studios art style. Not quite exact, but it was fun to give my best shot at it!
