Can you tell me how to get started with dorf fortress? Like, how to get into it. I am thinking to try it but. I am bad at video games and i am worried it may be overwhelming given its complexity.
This ask came in on August the 8th, 2022, and I would first and foremost like to humbly and deeply apologise for my tardiness in getting around to answering you.
I've been asked this question a lot over the years. I had been going back and forward and umm-ing and ahh-ing at a few details - generating a brand new world, taking screenshots, being as to-the-point as I could. What you see above is about the tenth iteration of the work, and this will probably be the twelfth or so.
Here is the general setup for a successful Fortress:
Create a Small to Medium World.
Select Very Short to Short History.
High Civilizations are a must.
High to Very High Sites to keep things interesting.
Medium Number of Beasts so you won't starve.
Low to Very Low Natural Savagery so you don't get killed by Elephants.
Frequent to Everywhere Mineral Occurrence so you're never short on metals.
Settle in a Mountain tile.
In the preview, make sure you're next to a river.
Make sure when you examine the area, there's no Aquifier.
Check the Temperature, and make sure it's either "Warm" or "Hot".
[e]mbark!
Make sure you [d]esignate some Dwarfs to cu[t] down some trees.
[b]uild [w]orkshop fis[h]ery, two of them, next to your river.
[d]esignate a Dwarf to [d]ig up the stone to lay your foundations.
Every step I just listed is the quintessential "How to play Dwarf Fortress". In fact, if anybody wants to play Dwarf Fortress, this is all you need to follow - this, and the Wiki. You can reach it by going to the official Dwarf Fortress wiki, or use the In-Game Help menu by pressing [?] at any time during your gameplay to figure out the basics.
After writing all of this, I asked the community - mostly because I felt it was far too dry. This was pretty rough content, not at all interesting, and while helpful to most, it can be difficult to go into DF by rote instruction. Amongst them was my original suggestion: Watching Vargskelethor's Dwarf Fortress playthrough.
Some other suggestions from the wonderful community:
Use a "Lazy Newb" pack, such as PeridexisErrant's DF Starter Pack. These packs are tailor-made for newcomers into Dwarf Fortress, allowing for quick setup, texture packs, and a great deal of utilities.
Use the Dwarf Fortress Wiki's "Quickstart Guide". In fact, just use the Dwarf Fortress wiki in general! The whole wiki is tied to the game itself, so you can find it via the [?] Help! menu.
Use DFHack. DFHack, or Dwarf Fortress Hack, provides you with a console that runs detached from Dwarf Fotress, one that allows you to input commands to modify the game. It automates quite a fair few features for you, making the gameplay far easier.
Watch Let's Play's, Let's Learn's, or read some Dwarf Fortress stories. They're all excellent ways to learn the game - as mentioned previously, I personally figured it out watching Vargskelethor's Dwarf Fortress playthrough.
This covers basically everything you need to know. Everything relevant ends roughly here. This is the definitive, mechanical guide of starting Dwarf Fortress.
If you would not mind, however, I ask you to not leave yet. I have a story to tell you.
This is how to play Dwarf Fortress.

If you've made it to the end, this work was heavily inspired by what initially caused me to be interested in Dwarf Fortress: the Quantum Artefact known as Planepacked.
I came across this whilst looking for video game glitches to laugh at during a moment of deep depression in 2012. Shortly after reading about this ludicrous artefact, and all it's unique, inter-locking, self-referential stacks of history, I found the story of Boatmurdered, which made me laugh myself deep into the school nights.
This year marks my 10th year of playing Dwarf Fortress, and it also coincides with the premium release of Dwarf Fortress on Steam. I joined this little page after my endeavours with speedrunning Dwarf Fortress in 2016 came to a crashing halt after my ambitions got the better of me, and I wrongfully stepped out of line with another member in the speedrunning community.
I only contributed little commentary, but have been continually impressed and proud of the tumblr Dwarf Fortress community - from its incredible artworks I've always wanted to join in on, to the sheer volume of incredible Fortress Stories, to trying to help with complex and complicated problems I felt only I could solve.
This answer has taken a colossally long time to complete as I could not answer it with good faith until I felt all grounds had been absolutely covered, and all possibilities explored - not because Dwarf Fortress is a hard game to play, but it is very, very hard to get into, and get people into.
Thank you, if you've made it this far, for reading over my story, and checking out my guide.
Love, always,
Mod %

As someone who has gossipy friends it sounds like a few influential people didn't like you are fine with conflict in public, talked about you, and then people who aren't familiar with you went 'ok?' and erroneously figured that resentment was based on something because they don't want to believe their friend could spurn a person over a mere personality mismatch. no gossip needed, just an 'I heard criticism about them 3 years ago' is enough, because that was the last time they heard your personality discussed in detail.
Incredibly stressful even knowing a quick positive interaction shakes off the preconception. like do i have to have a lil chat with all these individual people who taped a crinkled half-remembered brain memo over my face in their heads. i think your decision to avoid this community is pretty reasonable with that in mind. much better to make individual friends with people who may or may not make comics as they come to like you based on Observable Facts About You
you know, this way of how misconceptions get spread didn't even occur to me but it's a very common sort of occurrence, you're right. this is also a very clear explanation of the phenomenon that otherwise is very hard this kind of thing happens a lot, and it is very bizarre to be on the receiving end of. usually i know why people are mad at me and it makes sense.
thank you very much for this message. understanding or at least having a single coherent explanation, regardless of accuracy, for this genuinely helps. otherwise i was like "what am i supposed to learn from this. what behavior do i modify"
thank you forever to my friends and my audience who are comprised of some of the most interesting people on the planet, frankly

The kind of Partner Dabi is:
Dabi x gender neutral reader (no pronouns used except “you”)
Warnings: N/a
Tumblr media
* Dabi may not seem like the type of partner to really give much effort in a relationship but he’s the partner who loves unconditionally because he didn’t receive love growing up. He doesn’t want to lose you, so he loves you whole heartedly.
* Dabi is so protective of you. If anyone so much as looks at you the wrong way they get burned. He’s learning to control that though because you mentioned you didn’t like it very much. (He still does it, just not around you)
* Play fights are a common occurrence in your relationship. Dabi knows how to pick on you in just the right way for the conversation to turn into either tickle fights or into wrestling. (He doesn’t say this out loud, but he lets you win on purpose because he loves seeing you smile.)
* If you dye your hair, he 100% helps you. We all KNOW this man is great at dying hair, have you seen his? Anyway, he will make sure that no dye gets on your skin, he makes sure it doesn’t stain, and that your hair is throughly coved in dye so it doesn’t come out patchy.
* Dabi HATES that you want to fight when it comes to the League. He would rather you just hang back and not get involved because he doesn’t want you to get hurt. If you do get hit, the person that hit you will be either dead or badly injured within seconds. Dabi will most likely have Kurogiri make a portal to you so he can get you out of there with out further harm.
* He loves when you kiss him, the feeling of your soft hands on his face or back or anywhere on his body for that matter makes him melt. He knows he’s not the most gentle guy in the world, but he tries for you. He doesn’t want to be the one responsible for hurting you.
* If you have pains or cramps he will heat up his hand just enough to have that pleasant heat to relax the muscles that are giving you issues.
* When it comes to sleeping Dabi doesn’t care how you all sleep. As long as he has you next to him he’s fine. He does prefer to be able to hold you, but he knows he gets really warm so at times it’s not practical.
* Dabi is so happy to have found a partner like you. He hates that it’s in the world he lives in, and that it’s always surrounded by fights, and uncertainties. But nonetheless, he will protect you with his life.

Hi, I love Red Hood, Dimension Travel & Time Travel fics. Here are a 5 I enjoy that aren't immediately showing up if you sort by kudos on A03, basically. Don't forget to look at the tags! A lot of these have dark/angsty themes.
___
The Passing There by Ginevra_Benci
Dimension Travel, incomplete, 15k
Jason Todd awoke one morning from troubled dreams and found himself transformed into a monstrous—
No. God, he wished.
Metamorphosis, he could have handled. An easy fix. Hell, magic insect transformation was practically an everyday occurrence, in Gotham.
Just… not in this Gotham.
***
Jason Todd awakes one morning in a Gotham that “doesn’t like chaos”, and finds his feet.
I love the writing style here, it's updating regularly, and the plot is interesting without being too complicated.
This is the only incomplete fic here btw.
PLUTO. by Orpheusaki
Dimension Travel, complete, 22k
"I kill so others don't have to," Bruce states firmly and clearly. This entire situation didn't seem like it could get any more bizarre, what with Bruce sitting in the dark and polishing guns, but somehow it just has, "While you are here you will not kill."
Jason's throat is scratchy and dry with terror, but the insatiable feeling of being talked over and disregarded is a fresh wound. He can't back down from this if he tried, "I've killed. I still kill. Who the fuck do you think you are to stop me?"
Bruce gently sets down his gun, and picks up the blade beside him with practised ease. Jason's blood runs cold when the man wearing his father's face says, "You will die by my hand if you try."
(Jason meets a version of Bruce who has manifested his fears very differently.)
Honestly if you haven't read any of Orpheusaki's fics you should- immediately. I love fics that explore Bruce killing, and the vibes are so so right here.
This author also has another AMAZING dimension travel fic but it's abandoned I think so I cannot rec it in good conscience, sorry 😭
ghosts by roseworth
Time Travel, complete, 5k
Steph startled as a kid in a bright Robin costume jumped onto the roof in front of them.
A Robin costume she had only seen inside a glass case. A mop of curls she had only seen in pictures.
This was fucking Jason Todd.
Shit.
-
(Robin!Steph and Bruce get sent back in time to when Jason was alive. Everyone has some realizations.)
Chef's kiss, Steph gets to see Jason & learn what he was like. Not super long, but it's great
Sisyphus by EventualToast
Time Travel, complete, 8k
"Jason Todd is, for the second time in his life, sixteen years old, mortally wounded and trapped in a coffin. And this time, he takes in all the details that scream it’s reality. In his memories, he can always see the white of the silk, feel the worms crawling through his skin, even though neither of those things were possible. Now, he’s in sterile darkness. He needs to get out of here."
Or Jason and Essence get stuck in an infinite timeloop.
I love love love fics that use Jason's All Caste backstory & the time travel is wonderful. I've reread this like 5 times ngl
Ad Infinitum; Modified by familiarities (twistsandturns)
Time Travel, complete, 9k
Tim is hunched over his computer, bouncing between a report for B (Batman, not Bruce) and a spreadsheet for B (Bruce, not Batman) when Jason stumbles into the cave. If it weren’t for the fact that Jason had been in a somewhat good mood lately, Tim probably would have been a little more concerned about this fact. Still, it’s weird when, instead of ignoring Tim’s existence like he usually does, Jason walks over to him directly and says, “I'm in a time loop and I don't know why. Fix it."
The outsider pov on a time loop is so well done, and I love seeing Jason change from afar
___
Uhh yeah that's it. I've read a lot more than these, but there are better rec lists to get those. These are just ones that tickle my brain. A lot of these authors are on Tumblr too, so thats neat.

1899: Season 1: Theory: There has never been a Kerberos before…
Beware: Season 1 spoilers! If you have not watched all eight episodes of 1899 season 1, get thee to your streaming device and watch! Then come back for some boring rambling and probably way too many occurrences of the words “sim” and “simulation”. =)
Tumblr media
FATHER: Using the Prometheus to regain access was a smart move. Nevertheless, you’ve failed. Again.
That's Father addressing Daniel, giving him credit for hacking the sim so that the previous loop's Prometheus is not archived before the beginning of the next (current) loop. I believe that the presence of two ships in the loop, a previous loop's Prometheus and the new Prometheus of the current loop (renamed), is the cause of certain 1899 simulation malfunctions we see in season 1.
Tumblr media
In order to maintain the integrity of the loop's world, the new Prometheus is renamed the Kerberos and a cover story about the Prometheus being lost at sea for four months is added to the world's recent history and the memories of key travelers. I'm unclear/undecided on whether Father has anything to do with this improvisation or if it is an adaptation automatically made by the sim's basecode. We learn that Father and his henches refer to this loop as "Project Kerberos", but there's no way to know if that is a name he has assigned to it, having designed/edited it to his satisfaction, or one generated by the simulation automatically on launch. In the rambling that follows, I will refer to the "sim" or "simulation" sometimes as being responsible for modifications made to this loop, but I am not certain if or how much such changes may have been executed by Father vs. the simulation's baseline programming algorithms/AI.
Tumblr media
Wherever Ciaran is, he is aware of the adaptation of the sim world in this loop and modifies it further by adding his mysterious envelopes of news clippings, notes, and photos to the inventories of select travelers, building on the four-months-lost Prometheus story. He even includes the exit key in the envelope for Henry/Maura. These moves indicate to me that Ciaran ultimately wants Maura to escape the sim. He just cannot make it easy for Father to keyjack her and escape instead. I believe Ciaran counts on Daniel and Elliot to unwittingly help him in this, thanks to their love for and loyalty to his seeker sister—natural or programmed. =)
Tumblr media
With all of these modifications made, the loop begins. The travelers wake from their fitful slumbers aboard the Kerberos and begin their second days at sea (their firsts are skipped, because departure and arrival are not part of the loop — for more on how the 1899 sim was designed to operate, give this a read). Everything seems to run as it normally would, or at least, what passes for normally in recent iterations of the sim. Right up to the moment when it doesn't—when in the dining hall, every passenger except Maura takes a drink of their tea at the same time (should really be kicking-in-before-your-reality-does coffee, tho, right?) and Ling Yi's right arm visibly glitches. And not only does this oddsmaker-upsetting event actually happen, but no one on board, Maura included, appears to take notice of its uncanniness. I believe this is the first sign that the simulation has been tasked with more than it can process.
Tumblr media
Almost immediately after the glitch, Krester enters and makes his plea for a doctor to help for his pregnant sister. Maura follows him down to third class to help Tove. Afterward, when Ada touches Maura's belly and asks if she has children, Maura experiences her first waking flash to a backstory—Alfred Beetle in Elliot's palm. When Krester presents his crucifix to her as a thank you, Maura experiences another flash to her backstory—Father in shadow in the hospital corridor. Then more flashes on the stairs up to the deck—the "1011" hospital room number, her wrists restrained in the chair, the empty chair itself, the memory restoring and erasing hypos, the memory eraser injection, sexytimes with Daniel, the obsidian tetrahedron in Elliot's(?) hand.
I believe that these waking flashes have not occurred in previous loops and are the glitchy result of the destabilization of the simulation. Certain of these flashes are notable for not being part of what we see of Maura's backstory in the Kerberos, which is focused on her Father forcibly removing her memories in room 1011 of his hospital after she challenges him to answer for shady activites she's uncovered.
Alfred Beetle appears in Elliot's backstory.
Sexytimes with Maura belong to Daniel's backstory.
The black tetrahedron isn't part of anyone's backstory (that we've seen). We only ever see it appear "live" in the sim, usually in Elliot's possession.
Tumblr media
How and why do these moments that are not part of Maura's programmed 1899 life appear to her mind's eye? Perhaps…
In past loops, the beetle and sexytimes were part of a backstory or backstories shared with Maura. Sim glitching is enabling such moments from past loops to bleed through.
Flashing to the POV of an NPC version of herself in someone else's backstory (Elliot's, Daniel's) is another manifestation and level of simulation bugginess.
Her mind can access Elliot and Daniel's backstories because she helped create them. (More on this in a post to come.)
The black tet, a device that allows its wielder to affect the sim, could logically only be part of a memory of a previous loop. Sim glitching is enabling such memories from past loops to bleed through.
Once Maura is on deck, the good captain finds her and inquires about her whereabouts. They exchange some words about the rules regarding the separation of first and third classes and who they benefit. Classic hot and heavy banter. Alas, their dance is interrupted when the First Mate and not-Adam Driver arrive with a transcript of a repeating message they've received for the last 20 minutes—the coordinates of the Prometheus.
Tumblr media
When the captain chooses to change course and tow the Prometheus back to Europe, the simulation is strained even further as the ships enter never before traveled virtual waters. In an attempt to nudge its subjects back on scripted track, the simulation intervenes by generating unnavigable fog, forcing the ships to stop, as well as giving its procedural sea and sky renderers and bird bots a break.
Tumblr media
As this Kerberos loop progresses, more travelers experience waking backstory flashes, and not just images, but fully immersive visits. They find themselves transported into their backstory worlds to relive their painful memories in pieces. These are different from their scheduled nighttime "dream" visits—in which they play their parts in their backstory cutscenes exactly as they (are meant to) remember them—because they are awake and aware of the strangeness of the events unfolding around them even as they question and resist them. I believe these are all unintended glitches in the loop simulation, caused by the sim computers having been pushed beyond their capabilities in order to maintain a Prometheus and a Kerberos, over 1600 travelers, and decisions and consequences never made in any previous loop.
Yeah, so…that. =)
Wake up 🜃

Pairing: lead vocalist & guitarist!Seonghwa x fem!reader x lead bassist!Hongjoong
Genre: fluff, comfort, soulmate au, rockstar au
Rating: PG
Warnings: language, mentions of stress
Summary: After hearing your boyfriends so stressed on tour for months you can’t be any happier than you are now with them back in your arms.
Word Count: 409
requested by; @umbralhelwolf (sorry again for cutting so many things out of this)
for The Cafe request event
Tumblr media
The moment you hear the door click open you nearly trip over yourself as you make your way to the front door of your home. You nearly burst into tears seeing both Seonghwa and Hongjoong wearily walk in. You can see the exhaustion written on both of their faces but Seonghwa still gives you a weak smile. Barreling into them you hold them as tight as you possibly can. Hearing what their thinking is something special you will always cherish.
When you first realized you could hear both of their thoughts you thought something was wrong. Someone was going to get hurt in that situation no matter what. Then they admitted that they both heard each other and you. It all clicked and from then on you were happily a set of three soulmates, despite how rare that occurrence actually is.
“I was so worried about you guys.” you sigh into their chests.
“We know baby, you worried more than you did anything else.” Hongjoong teases.
“Speaking of, Seonghwa are you okay? I heard you thinking about the logistics and safety of the concerts after that talk with your manager.”
“What talk with our manager?” Hongjoong interjects, “Was I already asleep, how did I miss that?”
Seonghwa sighs and pulls you away slightly so he can look you in the eye. He kisses your forehead before speaking.
“It was nothing, really, the second to last stop our manager was concerned about the heat and the safety of our fans. It really wasn’t that stressful.” “Seonghwa,” you hear your other soulmate call in a strict tone, “we can both hear your thoughts, it was stressful for you. We both know how much you care about our fans.”
He shakes his head and looks down, “I’ll never learn will I?” he jokes.
You smile and place a kiss on each of their cheeks before taking their instruments from them. Carrying the cases into their in-home studio you place them down each in their respective spots. Both men follow behind you knowing exactly what you’re planning but not daring to ruin your plan.
“Well, you’re home now, how about instead of stressing out about past experiences we go cuddle and get some rest? I can see and hear how exhausted you both are.” you smile brightly at them.
Neither of them verbally responds but hearing them mentally you know they’re both more than happy to be home and to be with you.

Article Review - Do Bacteria Mutate Intentionally Or Randomly?
I read this interesting article yesterday and would like to provide a concise summary of what I learned from it:
1. In the 1940s, the scientists Salvador Luria and Max Delbrück conducted an experiment to show that bacteria mutated spontaneously that won a Nobel Prize in 1969. Their findings have been consistently used to explain that bacteria can develop resistance to antibiotics/drugs that have not been developed yet.
2. The phenomenon that had led to the scientists’ venture is then introduced. When bacteria are living in a nutrient broth, it appears to be cloudy due to the abundance of colonies present. Introducing phages (viruses that kill bacteria) makes the broth clear as many bacteria are killed off. Maintaining optimal conditions for growth after that returns the cloudy appearance from earlier. Is this because the bacteria developed resistance to the phage after encountering it or because of a random resistant variant proliferating?
3. Luria conducted an experiment with a few tubes containing nutrient broths which had E.coli bacteria added to them to grow. Then, he transferred the bacteria to dishes containing phages. If bacteria only develop resistance to phages after exposure, then all the dishes would have colonies of bacteria from the rare bacteria that spawned resistant variants when transferred to the dish. The rest of the bacteria would die. None of the bacteria should have mutations. However, if they are resistant regardless of exposure (that is, they mutate randomly), most plates should have none or very few mutant colonies while a few should have large colonies. The difference in the number of colonies depends on which bacteria mutated in earlier generations to be phage-resistant while dividing. It is harder to see large colonies as during initial contact with the phages, less bacteria are available that can mutate (since it is a random occurrence). It’s like a slot machine — most times you get no/minimal rewards while there is that one lucky occurrence where you win a big prize. Luria’s experiment reflected this analogy and hence, answered the scientists’ question: Mutation in bacteria is random.
4. Luria then worked with Delbrück to verify his work and they then wrote papers about the findings. Other scientists modified the experiment conditions and derived similar results. The conclusion of this article is that bacteria has survived across time due to this ability to mutate spontaneously without prior exposure to things that could kill them. This is why drug resistance is still a challenge in medicine — bacteria could be prepared for even the most futuristic pills!
In conclusion, this was a good recap of an interesting time in the history of science. Everyone should read it — medicine is a universal topic!
Disclaimer: This is purely a concise reflection on the points presented in the article. These are not my opinions at all. I am only posting knowledge.

Azalin Reviews: Darklord Azalin
Tumblr media
Domain: Darkon Domain Formation: 579 BC Power Level: 💀 💀 💀 💀 💀 💀 💀 💀 💀 💀 (10/5 Skulls) Sources: My infallible mind. Actual Sources: 1e module: House on Gryphon Hill; 2e modules: From the Shadows, Roots of Evil, Death Unchained, Death Ascendant, Death Triumphant 2e source material: Realms of Terror, Domains and Denizens, 3e source material: Secrets of the Dread Realms, Ravenloft Gazetteer Volume II, Ravenloft Novels: King of the Dead, Lord of Necropolis, I, Strahd: The War Against Azalin, Tower of Doom, Tales of Ravenloft (featured in The Crucidble of Dr. Rudolph van Richten) At first I had qualms about conducting this self review as it requires me to divulge certain information I would rather leave buried, then I realized I could simply modify the memory of anyone who reads this. This way, I can tell the truth and no one is the wiser. I’ve heard rumors of Domains in the Mist that are larger than Darkon, but none are as vastly populated or diverse. Darkon was born from magic and darkness, which has seeped into the very land itself. Magical phenomena are quite common throughout my land and magic, naturally, is a day to day occurrence for my people. On the surface, Darkon is peaceful. At least, for those that know their place. Though I may rarely make a public appearance, my rule is seen everywhere through the direction of my Kargat. As long as my rule holds, the land is steady. I am known to be fair with my judgments if not harsh. Many describe me as ruling as “an iron fist with a velvet glove”. I do love velvet… Enough about this velvet cage of mine, let us move on to my history. How exactly did one as perfect as I end up in this miserable land? I wasn’t always “Azalin” and was born Firan Darcalus Zal’honan in 231 CY in the land of Oerth in the earldom of Knurl to Earl Turalitan Zal’honan. I was the Earl’s middle child and largely overshadowed by both my elder brother (Ranald) and younger brother (Irik). Worst of all, my father hated everything to do with the arcane, something I excelled at at a very young age. So, ignored and belittled for excelling at the very thing my father hated was my life until I disowned my family at the age of 15. What led to this decision…well, I’m ashamed to say I never had a proper teacher in the arcane and grew a bit over confident in my abilities. I really did love my little brother, Irik. He was naive, but always a light of happiness. So naturally I wanted to show him my passion for magic and what better way to do so than bring him along for a demon summoning? Perhaps if my “teacher” Corsalus had any skill or had given me access to the books he said I wasn’t ready for (even though I had already surpassed him), we wouldn’t have botched the summoning and Irik wouldn’t have become possessed. I know that I did the right thing. I went directly to the wizard Quantarius and begged him for his help to save my dear brother. Of course, my father stopped Quantarius before he had the chance. If he had just put aside his biases for one moment and listened to me, Irik would have lived that night. Quantarius was banished and I was given the option of a “pardon” if I renounced magic and accepted the Divine. Ridiculous. At least I know where my power comes from, those that pray for theirs just accept that it comes from whatever God they kneel before, but that source could be anything. It’s not as though their gods ever lower themselves to speaking to a mere mortal. I chose exile and became an Apprentice to Quantarius. I studied under Quantarius for almost three decades before we parted ways. Having a aptitude for magic from a very young age, I learned quickly and even surpassed my Master in many ways. For one, I discovered  a way to harvest the lifeforce of the recently departed to heal as well as restore youth. Yes, you can thank me for such spells as “Life Transference” even if I was not as egocentrically as Mordenkainen to name it after myself. In 283 CY, I was asked to return home and take on the rulership of Knurl. Not surprisingly, my brother Randal’s rule had left the land in chaos since he preferred throwing lavish parties and ignoring his actual duties. With his death, the people of Knurl hoped that the famous wizard of Knurl (I’m speaking of myself, naturally) would save them. I did just that and with my vast knowledge of magic and strict rule I led Knurl into a time of prosperity. I ensured magic was brought back into the earldom and was given the proper respect it deserved. My people called me “Azal’Lan” or “Wizard King” and truly adored me. Eventually, realizing I would not be able to indefinitely extend my own life through magic, I married Olessa in hopes of producing an heir. We had a son and Olessa died in childbirth. A pity really…but it couldn’t be helped. I named the child Irik after my lost brother. I loved Irik very much, but his soft nature was not promising for the strict rule that Knurl needed. Try as I might, he resisted my teachings and eventually betrayed me. I was left with no choice but to execute him myself so my people would know that no one, not even my own son, was above the law. I regretted it though. If only I had done things differently. If only there was a way to start again. And that’s when the voices came to me. What I call my tormentors and now know to be the Dark Powers. They promised me immortality but that was not as appealing to me as their promise of granting me the ability to bring my son back to life. I followed their instructions and gathering the resources necessary, created a potion. Once drunk, I became what I am today, a lich. Not the immortality I imagined but that mattered little as long as I could bring Irik back. They had tricked me and though I could bring Irik back, it was not what I wanted. I could only bring him back as one of the undead, not the true life I had envisioned. Thankfully I was able to undo that transformation and bind his spirit to his corpse so I could cast the proper spell once I learned it. I ruled Knurl for 6 decades as a lich, always careful to disguise my true nature. I was betrayed by one I thought was loyal to me and was lured out of the protection of my home based on a rumor of the spell I sought to restore my son. While seeking out this spell, myself and my guardsmen were surrounded by an army a thousand strong. I could have easily taken hundreds of them out without a second thought, but a thousand required a bit more strategy than mere destructive spellwork. I fled into a thickening fog in the hopes of playing a bit of cat and mouse with my betrayers. Instead I found myself in Barovia. I spent almost 40 years in Barovia working with Strahd von Zarovich on discovering a way to escape the Mists we were now both trapped in. We spent more time bickering than working together, but I did make some headway…inadvertently created a few new Domains and we did escape to Mordent for some time…though as I said before, I did not find it a very memorable experience. I have vague recollection of there being two Strahds there and, let me assure you, one is far too many. After another botched experiment to escape the Mists, Strahd and I were investigating the ruins of an abandoned monastery on the banks of the Luna River. Or more I was investigating while the overgrown flea was sitting in his carriage after assuring me how pointless the effort was. I discovered a single spell scroll within and upon seeing it, Strahd left in a huff of bat wings as he often did. A moment later I heard sounds coming from within the Mists. The sounds of wagons and horse hooves. I rushed within, hoping that whoever was traveling them could escort me away from Barovia…That…wasn’t entirely what happened. Instead I was transferred to my own prison - Darkon. I was split into my mortal and lich half when I first entered Darkon with no memory of who or what I was. Darcalus was King of Darkon when I first arrive and I, Firan, believed he had killed my son and wanted revenge. I wasn’t exactly wrong. I will not get into the details of how, but eventually my two halves combined once more and left me as the King of Darkon. I am clearly the most powerful of the Darklords. Not only am I cursed to never restore my son to life, but I cannot learn new spells. Why? Why this difference? I am convinced they are afraid that I could find a way to destroy them if I was allowed this freedom. But because of this, I feel their presence far more than any of my fellow Darklords and have learned much about them. And I will have my revenge! Even without the ability to learn new magic, I am still an incredibly powerful spellcaster. And…well, I may have a single room in Castle Avernus in which I can learn and cast new magic from. Many consider my rule of Darkon as “strict yet fair” and only meddling fools such as van Richten have learned of my true nature. Most of my subjects believe me to be a powerful wizard who extends his life through magic, which is, technically, correct. Besides being a powerful lich, I can delve into the mind of any Darkonian and rewrite their memories as I see fit. I have infinite control over the undead in my Domain and can raise corpses no matter how far away I am from them. I caused the Requiem that forced many Domains out of the Mists and created Necropolis. I am a force that is not to be reckoned with. I am Darkon.

I have full executive authority to modify my text posts for another audience - to express the exact same sentiment but in words that the new audience will understand. To translate, if you will, from "broad and unknown Tumblr audience" who speak the Tumblr lingo and dialect and who could be literally anybody, to "close family with a humongous bunch of shared experience and similar language to talk about them," who share my worldview and understand what I'm saying without getting offended by a caveat I forgot to include or a specification or detail that I thought was unnecessary. (E.g. on Tumblr I might say "my friend X", but to family I'd just say "X")
Translation from one to the other, and vice versa, is necessary for both clarity and brevity. Different audiences require different approaches.
Tumblr audience might have sentences providing caveats or clarity or introduction to a concept that the family audience already knows or doesn't need. For brevity, I would cut those out, but I might also add sentences to help with transition or to aid in pacing of the ideas, concepts, or story. (This also goes for fic; is the fic for fans only or is it friendly to fandom-blind readers? Same story, told in slightly different words sometimes.)
But they are still my words and all those words remain as true as they were in the original form (assuming I didn't decide to lie to one group). In fact, if somebody had access to both versions (and understood both), they could see more of my mind, heart, and will than otherwise; for example, my willingness to even do such a thing as translating or providing two different versions. A family member who forgot my relation to X might be reassured by the label "friend" when describing her. (It might also mean a lot to the friend, if she read both accounts.) It always helps to see further caveats, examples, side notes, details, or even just different phrasing that I thought would help one group's perspective but wouldn't be too useful for the other unless they were doing a deeper study of my words, for whatever reason.
Now if I DID decide to lie, of course, you can't believe either version (or any new one I came up with), because now I'm a liar and you can't trust anything at all. But assuming I'm not a liar (and nobody has messed with my words, or it's not an outright faked screenshot or deep fake or whatever) - assuming I am truthful and you trust me (and/or my messenger), you can learn a lot from the differences of how I convey the same idea.
Between the two versions I might also do things like update typos or accidental occurrences of misgendering, clarify grammar, institute proper capitalization, and so on.
It makes me think of a post I saw once about the differences between Hunger Games books and movies; how the books tell a story of how awful war is to kids, and how awful the capitol is to make them have a love triangle to survive, and how awful it is for them to sit back and watch it as entertainment. And how the movies have us sit back and be entertained while children have a love triangle and fight each other. It seems like a classic case of "movies butchered the books," but the author was actually involved in and had quite some say in the production of the movie. Looking at them, they both together tell a more powerful story than otherwise. I'll see if I can find that post because it was a JOURNEY.
Anyway. The author has ultimate authority to translate their work to different audiences, with different emphases and details, whether the work is a Tumblr text post or an essay or verbally telling a friend what happened to me today.
Same goes for the Lord Jesus Christ, the word of God (John 1). (For one thing, translating God Himself into human form while preserving his divinity? Major translation skills there.)
The four gospels are an example of this; Matthew, for example, is addressed primarily to the Jews and includes many extra details, adding things like "BTW this was in fulfillment of XYZ prophecy" and including the genealogy through David and all like that. Luke is written by a Gentile to Gentiles, and tells similar stories but often with different details.
Only one gospel mentions that when Jesus fed the five thousand, it was at evening; only one mentions that it was a little boy who had the five loaves and two fishes; when Jesus asks a disciple what they're going to do, only one gospel mentions that Jesus said it "to try him."
John is far more focused on Jesus' divine nature, including many stories not included in the others. Different details, different emphases, different audiences, although ultimately, all four are available to us who have lived after the first century AD.
The gospels also show off another aspect of the author having final authority to translate while still being pure, truthful, and accurate: quotations from the Old Testament.
The OT was written in Hebrew. Jesus reads from a Greek translation and calls it Scripture. (I.e. equally as inspired as the original.) The apostles and writers of the New Testament often do likewise.
The same can be true of other translations as well. Translations into Latin, into German, into French, into Old English, into Early Modern English... God is the master of language. He created it, after all. Jesus is the word. All Scripture is inspired and profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for instruction in righteousness...
But only the author has that authority. If I tell my sister one thing and she tells my friend something in anything other than my own words, it may still be true; but it's slightly less true than my own words. Hopefully, usually the difference is negligible, but in a contest, anything I've ever said or written on the topic is more accurate than what somebody else said.
Hence, if there's something strange about the story my sister tells, my friend would do well to take it with a grain of salt (or more than one, if she knows I have a bad relationship with my sister.) If not, this can pass from one to another like a game of telephone until it devolves into gossip that's wholly untrue, outright malicious, etc.
I and only I retain the right to point to two different versions of my words and say both are equally true. My sister can't say "her words and mine are equal" unless she was there, and even then, any differences would be down to her own different perspective (and level of honesty), not mine.
You never know when somebody might embellish a Bible translation. I hear Satan has quite the interest in perverting God's words (just see Genesis 3). Compare your translation carefully with both itself and others.
On that note, let me share some comparisons to get you started.

“The clearest evidence about the Mycenaean pantheon lies in the Linear B texts. As discussed above, only a handful of the deity names in these texts appear both on the mainland and on Crete. We might consider those deities mentioned only on Crete as being Minoan. For those deities mentioned on the mainland, we have at least two possibilities. On the one hand, they may be Greek, meaning that they may derive from the Indo-European civilization that gave rise to the Greek language. Some divine names do have Indo-European etymologies and cognates. On the other hand, they may be pre-Greek, belonging to the indigenous population of Greece before the Greek-speakers arrived. These deities may then have been adopted into the Greek pantheon. Some gods do have a blatantly Indo-European heritage, such as Zeus and Poseidon. Others are more difficult to determine. The deities attested to among the Mycenaeans are Zeus, Poseidon, Ares, Dionê, Marineus, Hera, Artemis, Hermes, Dionysos, Posideia, Trisheros, Manasa, Pereswa, Dopota, Dipsioi, Drimios, Iphemedeia, the Mother of Animals, the Queens, the King, the Lady of Upojo, the Lady of Asiwia, the Lady of Iqeja, the Lady of Newopeo, and the Lady of Grain, as well as simply Lady (Potnia) (Hägg 1997, 165).
Much can be learned from these names not only about Mycenaean religion, but also about continuity of Greek religion into the historical periods. Many deities remained in power throughout Greek history, such as Hera and Hermes, showing that the Greek Dark Age was hardly the utter devastation and re-creation of Greece that scholars originally believed it was. Other names in the corpus either ceased to exist after the Bronze Age or morphed into nondivine titles, such as Dipsioi, “the Thirsty,” possibly referring to the dead. The most vexing of these is the name/title Potnia. By Homer’s day, the term meant “revered female,” referring either to a mortal or to a goddess. Sometimes the title was specific, as with the Potnia Therôn—Mistress of Animals—used in reference to Artemis. The question of who the Bronze Age Potnia was/were, however, is problematic.
The name/title Potnia appears twelve times at Pylos, five or six times at Knossos, three times at Mycenae, and once at Thebes (Boëlle 2001, 403). Thus, it is common to both Greece and Crete. In some instances, the word appears alone; in others, it is modified by a concept or place-name. At Knossos we have the a-ta-na-po-ti-ni-ja, which translates to something like Lady of Athens, and the da-pu-ri-to-jo-po-ti-ni-ja, or Lady of the Labyrinth. At Pylos we have a po-ti-ni-ja-a-si-wi-ja, Lady of Asia; po-ti-ni-ja-i-qe-ja, Lady of Horses; and at Mycenae there is the si-to-po-ti-ni-ja, or Grain Lady (Trümpy 2001, 411–413). The question is: Is Potnia one goddess or many? Is Potnia similar to the Christian “Our Lady,” in the way that Our Lady of Lourdes is also Our Lady of Fatima? Or is Potnia a title applicable to several separate goddesses at once? In both linguistics and occurrence, Potnia is related to the god Poseidon. The Pot- portion of her title may derive from the Indo-European word for possession or ownership, just as Poseidon means “Lord of the Land.” Her strongest cult is attested to at Pylos, where Poseidon was clearly the chief god, and she even has the title of i-qe-ja, relating her to horses, just like Poseidon. One could argue that Potnia was the consort of Poseidon. Furthermore, we know from later Greek mythology that Poseidon once mated with Demeter, both of them in the form of horses. If we add this to our study, and combine it with the fact that at Mycenae there was mentioned a Grain Lady (possibly an epithet for Demeter), we might say that Potnia was one universally acknowledged Aegean goddess, understood to be a grain/horse deity, consort of Poseidon, and later manifesting as Demeter. But then how do we understand titles like a-ta-na-po-ti-ni-ja, “Lady of Athens,” which is certainly a title of an Athena-like goddess? How could an apparently Indo-European word like Potnia be identified with a blatantly Minoan term like labyrinth? Why does the name/title Potnia appear more than once on some Linear B tablets? Should we understand that Potnia, as one goddess, received different dedications in her different guises, or that the different Potnias referred to distinct goddesses? In the end, it seems probable that Potnia was a title given to various goddesses in the Aegean pantheons. In some instances, such as at Pylos, one goddess was so prominent that she could be referred to merely by the title Lady. At other times, adjectives were used to differentiate among goddesses.”

SPIDERSONA TIME
Mason Ross/Atterlae
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(⬆️in doodle page, top middle, middle right, bottom right, and bottom middle by @pigeonmoses)
He's 19-20 years old
Mason was raised in foster care and bounced around houses until he aged out of the system at 18. He got bit and gained his powers when he was 16, he was working with a class project in which he had to combine two similar species, and he attempted to force the genes to bond by using a bunch of radiation to damage the cells just enough that they would heal in tandem and mutate together, and he also used way to much of the provided cellular "binding agent" (mm yes doing science scientifically). It worked, but later he didn't follow protocol (dumbass didn't wear the gloves) and his genetically modified school project bit him, and then his own overkill tactics backfired, giving him his powers. Which include:
Normal Spidey stuff, wall sticking, agility, spider-sense, super strength/healing etc.
His own biological webs in his wrists
He has very thin, two inch long orange and black "hairs" growing out of the top of his wrists and mid outer forearm. He can make them stand on end and block with them facing out or flick his wrists to fling them at opponents. Each is tipped with an irritating microscopic spine that embeds itself in flesh like a hook, and they are coated in a mild venom that induces nausea, dizziness, swelling, and a numbing sensation. They take about a week to grow back if he loses them
Tumblr media
The spines are always there, and it's pretty easy to accidentally discharge them so he tends to wear long sleeved shirts, hide them under his rubber bracelet collection, or pull them all out before any social events. He's immune to the venom on them, but unfortunately not the spines themselves :')
As a character, Mason is very reserved, he is very good at hiding his emotions with an amazing poker face that he learned to keep up during his childhood. Outwardly he is very cocky and a flirt to the extent of being annoying, but he doesn't plan on being with anyone any time soon. Inwardly, he's very soft and empathetic and stress and pressure gets to him really easily. But once you get him to open up, he's a very enthusiastic and loveable dork, who makes too many dick/your mom jokes, excitedly tells you about his rubber band collection, requests Mac and cheese at every meal, and will generally just chaotically vibe with you.
Random trivia!! :D
Mason wasn't originally a spidersona, he's what I call a "flex tape oc". See a rp plot I want to do but don't have an oc that fits? Boom, new mason au. Atterlae is just one I got particularly attached to
He has an addiction to caffeine from using it as a crutch to work odd hours, and keep up in both hero work and his community collage engineering classes.
He 𝘴𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘣𝘰𝘵𝘩 𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 if you know what I mean *badum tiss*
Tumblr media
His suit color pattern is based off of orange kneed tarantulas :]
Mason is one of those people that sleep fairly deeply, but move around a lot while they sleep. Like full on flailing and loud snoring every time they roll over and it is a regular occurrence to wake up on the floor or completely turned around or sideways on the bed (head in foot zone and feet on pillow)
He sleeps with socks over his hands so he doesn't stick himself of others with his quills
Before the bite, his hobbies included boxing, playing acoustic guitar, and tinkering with various machines (he built his own motorbike from scrap)
Literally says "sweetheart" to anyone over 18 in any context, to villains and allies alike, mostly to make people uncomfortable (though he drinks his respect people juice and will stop if asked nicely. Unless he hates you.)
*swings into battle with a villain he's seen multiple times before* "honey we can't keep meeting like this! People are going to start talking!"
He has a patreon under his hero name where various teirs have rewards like filming himself doing backflips or other swinging tricks, while higher teirs have things like personal favors such as delivering a pizza to a supporter or even swinging past a donator's window to say hi.
He has some minor claustrophobia, mainly the part about being afraid of suffocating, so he designed the suit fabric over his mouth and nose to be thinner and more breathable
He can't fucking sing. He tries and thinks he can, but he sucks.
Here's a very rough animatic of his voiceclaim
youtube
And a Spotify playlist (WIP)

Report on Surprise hyper CVE from 2023-04-11
Meta
This document is meant to help publicize the learnings from a recent emergency in hyper. Documents like these are common within various organizations. Some call them "postmortems", others say "incident reports". I quite like what Amazon calls them, since it aptly describes the purpose: Correction of Error. There was an error that caused an emergency, and we want to correct that error.
Summary
A surprise CVE publicly filed for hyper on April 11, 2023 caused an emergency situation for several collaborators, and sent out dependabot warnings with no actionable advice. By day's end, we identified a best-guess at what the cause of the low-severity vulnerability was. By the next morning, a fix was available.
That the issue should have been a CVE is uncertain.
The bigger concern is the way the CVE was filed bypassing the existing security policy. That is similar to finding a lighter in a school, and pulling the fire alarm. This COE discusses both why it may have happened, and how we can try to reduce future occurrences.
The impact
The RustSec1 advisory explains the issue this way:
If an attacker is able to flood the network with pairs of HEADERS/RST_STREAM frames, such that the h2 application is not able to accept them faster than the bytes are received, the pending accept queue can grow in memory usage. Being able to do this consistently can result in excessive memory use, and eventually trigger Out Of Memory.
In reality, being able to consistently accomplish those conditions would be very difficult for an attack, and so the likelihood of this affecting anyone is minimal. Certainly low severity.
But the bigger impact was not this particular issue, but rather that a CVE caused a sudden panic for the maintainers and for users as dependabot alerted people with nothing that they could do.
The story
The original issue was filed on May 27, 2022. Trying to better understand, I asked some poorly worded follow-up questions. Another contributor filed a pull request trying to fix the underlying issue. Several collaborators reviewed that PR, but didn't fully grasp what it was trying to fix. It then fell into the void.
On April 11, 2023, someone decided to file a public CVE for the described issue, without following the security policy. I commented on the issue that while the motivation for doing so was likely good-intentioned, it was the wrong way to go about it. GitHub imported the report, which started triggering dependabot warnings.2 This surprised us, and at least four people dropped everything to handle the fire alarm.3
The first step was trying to determine a reproducible example. We didn't notice at the time it was filed, but the original issue did not include full reproducible instructions. We tried to create some unit tests to mimic the behavior described, but couldn't trigger the issue.
Eventually, we noticed that a modified test that stopped "accepting" requests from the connection, but still polled it, would cause the accept queue to grow. But hyper makes sure to have a task that is always accepting requests, unless you specifically ask it to stop. Thus, the modified test seemed like user error, but it was a just guess.
It just seemed too convuluted. Then we arrived at a much better guess.
We finally found a way to grow the accept queue even when continuously accepting, by creating a test to blast thousands of requests in a loop. Since h2s test suite uses in-memory IO streams, we are able to fill the read buffer to near infinity. That's when we settled on our best guess: if someone can fill the socket's read buffer faster than the server can pop requests, then the accept queue could grow unbounded. While there is a setting to limit concurrent requests, because these are immediately reset, the limit would never be checked.
After 14 hours, we had a fix written and reviewed. We determined that the issue was low severity, as the likelihood of being able to consistently attack was extremely low. And since we were adding a new limit, there was a possiblity of causing a new bug. So, better to not push something right before going to sleep.
The following morning we published the fix, as h2 v0.3.17. Surprising everyone who has rushed out new code, a new bug in it was indeed found. We then published v0.3.18.4
Five whys5
Why did someone file a CVE suddenly? We don't know for sure, but we can guess.6 A related issue had been open for a year, not fixed, so perhaps the reporter thought this was the only way to move forward.
Why wasn't the issue acted upon a year ago? When it was initially opened, the maintainers didn't fully understand what the problem was. Follow-up questions were asked, but even our questions weren't that clear. Eventually, we forgot about it.
Why was it forgotten? We didn't have any recurring reason to check back and try to understand what the issue was. If it had been reported privately to the security address, it would have stayed high priority until it was solved or determined incorrect.
Why wasn't the initial issue reported privately? Perhaps the original reporter didn't know about the policy.
What we're doing to prevent a next time
We can't completely control someone randomly filing a new CVE and causing another fire drill. But there are other things we can improve at to reduce the likelihood of one.
Schedule routine triage. This could be a synchronous meeting, such as in a text channel, or an audio channel. Or maybe over Twitch. But it can also just be a thing that triagers agree to do asynchronously, with a brief routine report to make sure we actually do it.
⚠️ If you or your company uses hyper, this would be an especially useful way to help with maintenance. Have an engineer or two dedicate a few hours each month helping us triage.
Setup a bug report checklist. There is a triage guide for bug reports, which is a good thing. But that doesn't mean everyone (me included!) always remembers all the steps. Checklists are famous in aviation and medicine for their effectiveness in saving lives. They can also help us make sure all issues are treated properly.
Update the issue templates to use forms instead. We do have an issue template in place, to try to get people to fill in more information initially. But it's pretty easy to skip it. It's possible using GitHub's new forms instead of just a text template could guide people more often.
RustSec and the CVE database are different. RustSec was much more helpful, coordinating with us by waiting until the emergency panic was over, and then discussing the best way to describe the advisory. ↩︎
I updated the advisory on GitHub's end to only indicate h2, not hyper. I also indicated my disappointment in GitHub's amplifying of the alarm and making the day much more stressful. Their reply: "We do that sometimes XD". Cool. ↩︎
Meanwhile, a reddit thread took off, watching the action, commenting, and mostly criticizing the actions of all involved. Thankfully, I didn't read comments like "I don't have any sympathy for the maintainers" until after the fix was completed. ↩︎
"At least this made you fix it, right?" No. This attitude is toxic. Doing it this way burns out everyone around who could fix it. There is a reporting process for a reason. It helps the most amount of people. Please use it. ↩︎
Not literally five questions, but an exercise to try to find the root cause, and to note any extra things that could be fixed along the way. ↩︎
Some people tried to infer bad motives, such as for clout or "another notch on a security researchers belt". I see no reason to assume that with no evidence. ↩︎

Restoring the Kinship Worldview (2022)  by Wahinkpe Topa and Darcia Narvaez
Tumblr media
I saw this title on the always-wonderful University of California, Berkeley’s The Greater Good Science Center site and was intrigued (https://greatergood.berkeley.edu/article/item/can_the_indigenous_worldview_build_a_better_future?_ga=2.232959710.1321401351.1669667825-1489903705.1660343467), having a profound interest in Native American perspectives, ancient and contemporary. Restoring the Kinship Worldview combines both to champion the ideology of kincentrism to restore place-based knowledge and return to an Earth-based consciousness in this Anthropocene era. Whatever version of a “god” one wants to believe in, through this ideological lens they all get rebranded as Nature. Sadly, “western” culture has nearly separated life from every corner of Nature, and thus we have created our own hell (p. 128). We collectively need to re-embrace a Nature-as-god, Earth-as-fragile-home mindset, if not as religion. Freud called this an “oceanic feeling”; to Maslow it was “peak experience”, and, to Sagan it was the romantic association of us being “made from stardust”. Beautiful, romantic, poetic.
Wahinkpe Topa (Four Arrows) speaks of a pet theory he has, where:
“ . . . starting with Hinduism, all of the organized religions have a foundation that relates to original Indigenous worldview. I propose that the enlightened founders, all the way up through Jesus Christ, saw the devolution of human civilization and created ideas for returning to our original loving nature. My theory is that religions are an effort to rectify the horrors of hierarchy and the loss of egalitarianism and Nature-based thinking. Indigenous worldview is thus prevention oriented, knowing about the potential but not experiencing life based on greed and division. Over time, the teachings of the religious founders were modified by the political and social mores of the times to create orthodoxy that weakened the original intent. Post-contact efforts became conventional for maintaining the religion itself.
If generosity is learned by observing the natural world and our place in it, as I believe it is, Indigenous worldview is a necessity for returning to life based on generosity, it seems” (pp. 162-3).
While my opinion couldn’t mean any less, I agree with him, even if I choose to ignore the “spiritual” or sentient nature of Nature. Lovelock and Margulis’s Gaia Hypothesis/Paradigm works well for me. The Indigenous worldview aligns with so much of “paganism”, Buddhism, Wiccan, druidic, and Transcendentalist perspectives too. This is an incredibly OLD way of looking at the world and understanding our humble place within in, and one I embrace wholeheartedly, but I’m nowhere near perfect yet. This is not a peace-on-earth perspective, though sometimes the readings feel that way. On the one hand, it is our <i>relationship</i> with and to Nature that needs to drastically metamorphose, and on the other it is our relationship to one another that needs to be dynamically reorganized. This all needs to be done quickly too. Time is not on our side here. Humankind needs to endure some growing pains in this transformation, but ultimately it will lead to greater reward for all life on Earth, finding balance and equilibrium, and nurturing a symbiotic relationship to Gaia.
If you haven’t yet seen the doc film The Year the Earth Changed on Apple TV, hosted by Sir David Attenborough, please do so. The COVID-19 pandemic was a monstrous occurrence (still ongoing) that’s severity could have easily been avoided if morons (beholden solely to their financial portfolios over human lives) weren’t in charge of half the world. One of the only good things the pandemic did was convincingly illustrate how when humankind slows down its consumption, traffic, pollution, and waste, the Earth and its biosystems can vigorously heal. This film is a teaching moment for tectonic change and shows that when humanity is encouraged to act differently, truly incredible things can happen, growing pains included.
Change is happening of course, but it is both equally small and yet equally significant, from nuclear fusion to quantum computing, from reversible-rust batteries to the growing use of solar panels and wind turbines, from “green concrete” to the proliferation of backyard gardens, discussions about “the future of work”, and the surging e-bike movement across the globe. Momentum, investment, and mind-shifts are required from everyone on the planet. We need to accomplish more with less. We need to consume less, waste less, breed less, and crave less. Replacing the mining of oil with the mining of lithium with the mining of cobalt won’t help. Listening to the voices of the global Indigenous community can lead us into a better future, but we must turn our ears and open our minds to what they have to say. This book is a fantastic starting point, and the sources they cite will help empower every reader to pursue the Indigenous worldview more purposefully. I’ll include my list below to make it easier on folks, but there are plenty more mentioned in the text (I’ve already read several of them, such as Sand Talk: How Indigenous Thinking Can Save the World by Tyson Yunkaporta). Here’s to a better, more peaceful, inclusive, and humanistic-driven future.
Spirits of Blood, Spirits of Breath: The Twinned Cosmos of Indigenous America by Barbara Alice Mann (2016)
Neurobiology and the Development of Human Morality: Evolution, Culture, and Wisdom by Darcia Narvaez (2014)

Unlearning the Language of Conquest: Scholars Expose Anti-Indianism in America by Four Arrows (Don Trent Jacobs) (2010)
Columbus and Other Cannibals: The Wetiko Disease of Exploitation, Imperialism, and Terrorism by Jack Forbes (2008)

What Benefits do Organic Crops offer?
Food that is organic may be more expensive than food that is inorganic, yet it is far better for your health as well as the environment to eat organic food. Read on to learn six compelling arguments in favour of selecting organic food, all of which are supported by factual evidence, as we discuss the benefits of organic eating in this piece of writing.
1.  Organic farming results in the production of Fresh food:
Fresh vegetables are obtained directly from farmers when it is organic. At the grocery store, on the contrary, neither the length of time the product was kept in storage before being placed on the shelves nor the length of time it was left out on the floor is known to us. Produce that has travelled from another country may also have been subjected to a long journey before it was even able to cross the border, let alone reach the supermarket. How recent could it possibly be? Every Thursday, Book My Crop, an AI-enabled Agri-tech platform where you can buy online crop seeds in India, makes a trip to the local farmer's market to acquire fresh fruit and vegetables, which it then brings directly to the doorsteps of its customers by the end of the business day. If you raised your own food, it would be the freshest stuff you could possibly eat.
2.  Organic farming results in the production of food with higher nutrition:
It should not come as much of a surprise that food produced through organic farming is healthful. The British Nutrition Journal published a study that found that organic foods have higher quantities of antioxidants than foods that were grown using conventional farming methods. In the past, the consumption of antioxidants was linked to a reduced risk of acquiring chronic diseases like neurodegenerative disorders and certain forms of cancer. The study concluded that meeting this goal was equivalent to increasing daily fruit and vegetable consumption by one to two servings.
3.  Organic Foods are next to Chemical-Free:
It's common knowledge that the average person ought to consume at least five servings of veggies and fruits every single day. In point of fact, it is recommended that you consume at least ten, but were you aware that produce grown using conventional farming methods may contain significant levels of metals as well as pesticides than the organic produce? Organic agriculture is supported by a stringent certification process, and there are significant limitations placed on the use of pesticides on crops. It was discovered that conventionally grown crops had a frequency of occurrence for pesticide residues that were four times higher than organic crops. In addition, the levels of the potentially cancer-causing element cadmium were found to be 48% lower in the crops grown using organic farming methods than the conventional ones. Cadmium is considered to be a likely human carcinogen. When people who are allergic to chemicals consume organic food, they may see a reduction in the severity of their symptoms. Buy crop seeds online that are chemical free and indulge in organic farming growing chemical-free food with Book My Crop.
4.  Ingredients that have not been Genetically Modified:
Organic standards prohibit the use of any substances that have been genetically engineered, and produce that has been cultivated according to these standards is never washed with chlorine. Although genetically modified foods are not widely available in the UK, they are nonetheless used in the majority of conventional animal feeding practices. Because of this, meat, eggs, and dairy items are extremely common in supermarkets yet are rarely labelled.
5.  Organic farming benefits the climate:
Organic farming improves the health of the soil and, as a result, decreases the rate of soil degradation. Additionally, in comparison to conventional farming, it results in far reduced contamination of rivers and other waterways. The Soil Association states that making fundamental improvements to the food chain as well as adopting farming practises that are more friendly to the environment could help limit the rate of global warming below 2 degrees Celsius. In most cases, organic farming also draws in a higher variety and quantity of local animals. Pollination is essential to the growth of the majority of the crops that we consume, but unfortunately, numbers are fast falling. A number of academics feel that shifting to more environmentally friendly methods could reverse the trend because of the good impact that it has on biodiversity. On organic farms, there may be up to a 50% greater abundance of plants, insects, and wildlife.
6.  Farming using organic methods is preferable from an animal welfare standpoint:
Animals must be provided with ample room, access to pasture, and clean air, as well as be kept in settings that are consistent with their natural behaviours, in order to meet the standards set by the Soil Association for organic farmers. Because of this, farmers will not administer hormones or antibiotics to their animals. One of the most important tenets of organic farming is to practise moral treatment of the animals used in the farming process. If you are concerned about the well-being of animals, it is recommended that you give financial support to organic farming. If you are looking to buy online crop seeds in India, look no further than Book My Crop.
Eating organic food is beneficial for both you and the environment since organic farmers are required to comply with stringent legislative criteria that place an emphasis on the well-being of animals and the health of the soil.

Entry 1: Humanity's Influence
[Disclaimer!!! This post was written in September 3, prior to Splatoon 3's release! These are the author's theories regarding the topic]
Written by: Yayi Fuji
_____________________________________
The world of Splatoon is filled with charm and intuition, easily dragging you into wishing to learn more about it. Since the very first game, we are made aware that humanity is extinct, alongside all mammals on the planet; with the exception of Judd. Their demise was brought upon by 5 World Wars, which ended up violently disturbing the water levels, and wiping off a considerable amount of life. Only ruins and bones are left behind, an entire civilization voided through inconsiderate destruction. After thousands of years however, new creatures evolved to live and survive upon the surface, inklings and octolings becoming the contemporary predominant species. Thus began the Mollusc Era, set 10,000 after the mass-extinction, once intelligent life was prospering again.

However, from what we can see within the game, it seems as though humanity continues to live on, through culture, fashion, structures: things we are undeniably familiar with. We play the game with the idea of a new world, yet find so many striking similarities to our own. So we have to ask, why is this?
It’s not too hard to imagine. Growing into the isolated surface, already filled with remains and technology, everything is basically laid out already, albeit a little rusty. Not only does this explain why there is so much influence, but why cephalopods evolved at such a fast pace. After all, they’ve always been intelligent, astute. Shortly after, Judd awoke from his cryogenic capsule, and was likely able to also communicate crude recountings of his young years. All of these attributes went into creating an image of humanity that fascinated this new generation, and in a way, gave means of idolization.

To start off, it’s rather obvious how much of a big element Turf Wars are to the game and cephalopod culture. The first ever Turf War recorded was 2,000 years prior to the present time in M.E., where they sported weaponry reminiscent of guns and explosives with an artstyle akin to egyptians’. Just having discussed the residue left behind, it would be no surprise if the first things the new life encountered were the artifacts utilized for the wars. It’s an ironic occurrence, but by no means purely a coincidence. It took them no time to modify and reinvent, giving it a less lethal twist, while simultaneously resolving their territorial instincts on a smaller scale as sport. Of course, the Great Turf War would come about 1,900 years later, but that’s a tale for another day.
Tumblr media
This closely ties in with other major festivities that are undeniably associated with humanity: Splatfests, Splatoweens, and Frosty Fests. These are determined to take place whenever a mysterious fax machine prints out debate topics that were originally documented by humans back when they were alive, sent to outer space via signals, and ultimately returned back to the planet from bouncing over from another. I know, it sounds silly, but it’s true. These messages have become sacred, entire festivals holding place as ritual. Although some Splatfests may be scarcely canon (I.E. collab events), the vast majority are easily understood, most already having new equivalents. This is even including ice cream, milk being one of the main ingredients which is no longer attainable, but still having been replicated somehow. In addition, the holidays of Halloween and Christmas were revamped flawlessly, and continue to be a tradition in their society.
Nonetheless, the list could continue on. There’s just so many other parallels and intricate details within this colorful world, as these are just glimpses of the layers that exist. Humans seem to be such an influential power, and could be credited for many attributes within this world, especially those that do not initially sound rational for non-mammals to have. Now with Splatoon 3 nearly at our fingertips, I am so eager to learn more, especially with mammalians being the main focus of the story mode. Despite all these similarities, the differences shown speak depths, making sure that we still remember that they are not humans, but cephalopods and creatures alike. Although not perfect, they thrive and adapt, with freshness in mind. But hey, I guess they just find us cool too, huh?
