Yellow Yaks: Oat-Fudge Bars

Did you know? In MCC 22, the Yellow Yaks were nicknamed The Golden Girls and were MCC's first all-female team!

Welcome to the stage, the Yellow Yaks themed dessert: Oat-Fudge bars! 

I’ve had this idea knocking around in my head since last summer and now it’s done and I finally get to share it! This event is so much fun to watch and participate in as an audience member, so I really wanted to create something that everyone could enjoy!

Prep: 5 mins + cutting out the template      Cook:  4h 50 mins*       Overall:  5 hrs

* Includes cooling time (3 hrs).

Ingredients

For the oat layers:

½ cup (113 g) unsalted butter, melted

½ cup (100 g) granulated sugar

½ cup (100 g) packed brown sugar

1 large egg

2 tsp. (10 ml) vanilla extract

1 cup + 2 tbsp. (135 g) all-purpose flour

¼ tsp. (2 g) salt

½ tsp. (1 g) cinnamon (optional)

1 ⅓ cups (105 g) old-fashioned oats

For the chocolate fudge:

¾ cup + 2 tbsp. (170 g) semi-sweet chocolate chips

¾ cup (175 ml) sweetened condensed milk

2 tbsp. (21 g) unsalted butter

¼ tsp. (2 g) salt

First, preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C) and with the oven rack in the middle of the oven.

In a large bowl whisk together the melted butter and sugars (picture 1).

Then, whisk in the egg and vanilla extract (picture 2).

Next, fold in the flour, salt, and cinnamon (picture 3).

Finally, fold in the oats (picture 4).

Lightly grease an 8x8-inch square pan. Cut parchment paper to fit the pan so that the bottom is covered and the parchment only hangs over two sides of the pan.

Then, spoon about a ¾ cup of the mixture into the bottom of the prepared pan and spread it so that it creates an even layer.

Set the remaining oatmeal mixture aside.

To make the fudge, add about ½-inch of water to a medium saucepan over medium-low heat and place a large glass or stainless steel bowl over top (picture 1). Make sure the bottom of the bowl doesn’t touch the water!

Then, add the chocolate chips, sweetened condensed milk, and butter to the bowl (picture 1). Gently stir the mixture as it melts.

Once the mixture has a smooth consistency (picture 2), remove the pan from the heat.

Pour the chocolate mixture over top of the oatmeal layer (picture 3).

NOTE: You can also melt the chocolate mixture in the microwave using a microwave safe bowl and stirring after 10 second increments until the mixture has a smooth consistency.

NOTE: Make sure to hold the bowl with a kitchen towel if using stainless steel - it really heats up!

To make the faces, first place the cut-out template overtop of the fudge layer (picture 1).

Then, fill the void areas with the remaining oat mixture that was set aside (picture 2) reserve a very small amount to fill in the areas where the nose was kept attached (the white spots).

Next, remove the template and fill in the areas where the nose was kept attached (picture 3).

Finally, bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes. The pieces of oatmeal cookie on top should look set.

After the bars are done baking, allow them to FULLY COOL IN THE PAN (about 3 hours).

TIP: I recommend cutting out the faces on the template with an x-acto knife and the pan border with scissors. Don’t forget to leave a little bit of the white area to keep the nose holes and nose bridge attached!

NOTE: You can cook the bars for longer if you want crispier, less chewy bars.

To cut out the faces, start by lifting the bars out of the pan using the overhanging parchment paper and place it on a cutting board (picture 1).

Slice into four pieces (picture 2).

Finally, print a second template and cut the face of one of the Yaks. Place it over top of each bar and use it as a guide to cut out the shape of each face (picture 3). 

TIP: The ears are a difficult since they’re really thin on the cutout. I recommend letting all of that chocolate area be for the ears and to cut out the head starting at the oats. See the title and final picture as an example.

Ta-da! Time to enjoy your tasty treat!

Honestly, I love these so much, 10/10. Not only did the designs come out super well but they taste amazing. 

I’m used to, and still kinda prefer, the ones at Starbucks that don’t include cinnamon (why I made adding it optional) but they’re fantastic either way!

Dad!Remus buying matching mommy daughter clothing because he can’t get enough of it. He LOVES to see his girls matching and if you both have a second daughter? It’s all over. Spoils the hell out of them while teaching them to be thankful and giving as well :,)

Omg omg!!! Pregnant!reader and dad!Remus who loves spoiling his three girls.

“Dovey? We’re back,” Remus doesn’t shout for you, he knows you can’t be far or more than two places- the kitchen where he hopes you aren’t and the bedroom where he hopes you are.

The doctor had been very specific, bed rest for the last month just to be safe. There’s been many a falling out between you and Remus over the fact that you refuse to stay in bed, but he gets it. So he lets you get away with little things.

“I’m here Rem, can you come help me with something in the kitchen baby?” He shakes his head as he sets down the bags and sends Charlie to the living room.

“I’m coming dove,” he finds you trying to reach into the pantry, a couple sandwiches open on the cutting board. Without asking, Remus gets the pepper sauce and the mustard you’d been reaching for.

“Thanks Remmy, how was shopping?” You’re breathless and Remus takes over.

“Go sit with Charlie. I’ll be two minutes.”

By the time Remus is in the living room, Charlie is helping you get comfy- moving cushions this way and that and rubbing your belly the way she’s seen Remus do it.

“Bekah, stop kicking mummy. It makes her chest ache.” At five she’s still as thoughtful as she’d ever been but her words have gotten clearer and it breaks your heart.

“Here you go dovey,” Remus hands you half a sandwich and then hands the other to Charlie. “Eat up Charlie girl, we had a long day.”

Remus reaches for the bags. “We got some stuff for Rebekah too,” Remus pulls out lounge wear for you, blue and purple and super soft. Then he tugs one out in Charlotte’s size in the same colour and a final one but tinier.

“Remus! That’s the cutest thing ever.”

Charlie grins, a tiny hand pointing to another bag. “We got other things too mummy! Daddy and I picked out a little lamb for Bekah like I’ve got and more matching things.”

She helps Remus reveal the clothes and toys and by the time they’re done you’ve tears in your eyes. “You’re so sweet, Rem.”

There’s a pink flush in his neck as he leans forward to kiss you. “Got to be sweet on my girls, you all outnumber me.” You slap his chest as you giggle wetly and Charlie frowns.

“Does that make you sad daddy? Only having girls?”

Remus shakes his head and pulls her to his lap. “Not even a little. I love you more than anything. More than I love chocolates.”

She gasps, hands covering her mouth as her eyebrows sky rocket to her hairline. “But you love your chocolates.” She looks at you like Remus has gone mad and you smile.

“And I love you more. You and mummy and baby Bekah, I love you all more than chocolates.”

“We love daddy just as much don’t we, Lottie?” She nods, kissing all over his face.

Remus can’t wait for his second daughter to come so he can see all his girls in the same outfit.

spring surprises

A/N: from the april prompts list! the prompts were smiling, pastels & dessert. warnings: alludes to smut but no smut. sexual themes. 1.2k words.

Tommy smiled, seeing his wife and two children approach where he was sitting in their garden that unusually balmy April afternoon. The sun was shining, the birds chirping, the horses trotting in the pastures just beyond this garden. The trees had begun blooming and the grass was a vibrant, bright green. His darling wife had told him the night before that their children, Peter and Katherine had been whining about missing their father. So in an effort to save his wife’s ears from more whines, he arranged a picnic lunch of sorts for them today. 

“Father!” Peter squeals, running towards Tommy when he catches sight of him. Katherine giggles, seeing him in the distance, at a table set in the middle of the field, a white table cloth spread over it, adorned with a vase of flowers, sandwiches and fruit cobbler Frances had so graciously prepared in haste. 

“Hello there!” Tommy kneels down to scoop his children into his arms. Katherine slowly caught up to Peter, squeezing in for a hug of her own. 

His wife, his lovely, beautiful wife, wasn’t too far behind the children. You had a look of irritated disbelief on your features. You knew Tommy had struggled with being a father. If he hadn't confessed it to you, you would have known anyway. He struggled often with knowing exactly how to parent small children, having been left to his own devices at such a young age himself. It wasn’t until he was nearly twelve that his mother had died and father had left that Polly had taken over raising them, and by that time, she was really just managing the chaos they brought along with them. So when Tommy knew he had neglected paying attention to his children for far too long, he attempted these grand gestures of apology, ones that you knew would be okay while they were little, but would lose their luster as they got older. And you had told him as much, to which he sighed, a look of defeat on his face. 

“Father, we’ve missed you!” Peter told him, smiling up breathlessly at his father. He had recently lost his first tooth, and Tommy’s heart ached with how much he was missing. 

“I know, son, I’ve been very busy lately. I’m sorry. I figured we could have the afternoon together, though, eh?” Tommy said, hoisting Katherine up on his hip. “You look pretty, my darling, is this a new dress?” He asked, noticing the light, pastel pink of her dress. 

“Yes,” she grinned bashfully, hiding her face in her fathers shoulder. 

And you. Tommy thought he could nearly faint from looking at you. You wore a light green dress that clung to you in all the right places and billowed where it needed to. The fabric was light, and his gaze darkened as he took you in. Your hair nearly sparkled in the sunlight, curls fresh and rustling in the breeze. “Come here,” he breathed, extending a hand out to you.

You smiled at him, walking towards him and taking his hand as he escorted the three of you to the table he had set up. “Alright, Mummy sits here,” he told the children, pulling your chair out for you at his right. “And Peter across from Mummy, and Katherine across from me,” he instructed them. They giggled, taking their respective seats. 

They each began to dig into their sandwiches and slices of fruit that Frances had prepared. “I have a surprise,” Tommy announced once he was finished with his sandwich. 

“Ooh, I love surprises!” Peter chimed, a smear of mustard on his cheek. 

“I think you’ll really like this one, son,” Tommy said, a twinkle in his eye. You cocked an eyebrow at him, curious as to where this was going. “Mummy had mentioned a few times that she would like a pool for you all to learn to swim in,” he eyed you, a mischievous look in his eye. “And so, I thought as a nice summer treat, we’d have one built here!”

Peter cheered and Katherine had a funny look on her face. “Mummy, what’s a pool?” She asked. 

You smiled gently at her and explained, to which her eyes lit up. “That would be fun!” 

“Yes, it’ll be enclosed in a glass house, so it stays very warm, even once the sun has set, and it will aid in keeping the water warmer,” Tommy explained. “I have men coming to start on it tomorrow, and it will be done by the first of summer.”

You shook your head at your husband. You had learned early on to watch carefully what you mentioned you would like around him. Even if it was something you had thought about wanting, he would find it and get it. Your jewelry box was overflowing, your closet bursting at the seams and the library was chock full of things you still hadn’t had the time to read yet. He would go to the ends of the earth to make you happy, you knew. And then some. 

That evening, once the children were asleep, you and Tommy sat on your balcony overlooking the back pastures. Your head rested on his shoulder, his arm around you while you took turns feeding each other bites of the leftover cobbler from lunch. 

“Thomas, you really didn’t have to do that,” you tell him, spooning a bite into his mouth. 

He smiled as he chewed. “But it was something you wanted,” he said plainly. 

“Yes, but you don’t have to spoil me at every turn,” you giggle as he feeds you a bite, teasing you by getting some of the syrup on your nose. 

“Mrs. Shelby,” he rasps, leaning towards you, kissing the syrup from the tip of your nose. “I have alternative motives for building you a pool house.”

You cock an eyebrow at him, a smirk playing across your lips. “Oh? And what is that, Thomas?”

He leans closer to you, lips to your ear. “Some night this summer, we’ll bring Sara to the house for the night to tend to the children, and you and I will sneak off to the pool house and skinny dip,” he tells you, biting at the shell of your ear. 

You nearly melt into him, the desire laced in his voice overwhelming. “Oh?” Is all you could manage to get out. 

“Yes, I’ve thought about it for quite some time, actually,” he tells you, readjusting in his seat, sitting back in his chair, well aware of the effect his words had on you. “That is my reasoning for wanting it, my love. And,” he adds, “Because I know it will make you very happy.” 

“You spoil me too much, Thomas,” you tell him, adjusting your position so your legs are sprawled across his lap. 

“I’m good at though, aren’t I?” He asks, removing your shoes, hands moving to rub at the soles of your feet, and up your calves.

He bites his lip at the feel of your soft skin under his fingers. You roll your eyes closed, relishing the feel of his hands on you. “Yes. It’s what you do best, I suppose,” you tease. 

“I’ll show you what I can do better,” he smirks, pulling you over his shoulder and into your bedroom, to show you how he can really spoil you.

I got tagged by @tinydooms “people I'd like to get to know better"! Here we go: 

Last song: I've been listening to the album “Eros, Agape, Philia” by Queer Feminist trad. folk/electro artist Sara Parkman on repeat the last week. Her song “the rose” has the most delicious stanza of sacral stream of consciousness lyrics: Eve: give me the apple, Heart: bring the beat, Eat me, Eat the bread, Drink me, Drink the blood, Bite me, Hard in the hand, Chaos give us life, Dance for us.” (own translation). And some of her queer fighting spirit lyrics have made this atheist sense God (through an understanding of Nietzsche’s take on Christianity’s slave morality). If it sounds intense, it’s because it was.

Favorite colour: Yellow. Love a pop of bright yellow to lighten your mood, or a musky mustard yellow for that autumn vibe. Doing my best to stay in academia style.

Currently watching: Avatar the last airbender live action with the kids: Going through all Brendan Fraser films on my own. (Favorite so far, beside the Mummy, is Airheads!) 

Spicy/savory/sweet: most times I would go with savory: a good plate of cheese and charcuteries. If sweet: it needs to be tart! Sour raspberries with dark chocolate.

Relationship status: married with three kids!

Hidden talent: I speak Japanese. (And I’m great at knitting but that's more in the open)

Current obsession: it’s a tie between Brendan Fraser and Tarzan. (No need for George of the Jungle jokes.)

one of the best mcc teams that i never see a lot of love for are the mcc18 mustard mummies. fr the vibes were so fun and they all played so well . the costumes . girl the fact that they were the scooby gang was so cute i literally don’t know what to tell you i mean tubbo got locked out of his main and his alt account he had to make a new one like right before he event started tubbo also leaked his team AND that all stars was coming up . but fr tubbo scott sylvee and sapnap have such a good dynamic with each other they really did have a lot of fun they fucking dominated they won 3 games had at least one person in the top 5 for like 6/8 games had 3 top 5 places in battle box WON BUILDMART !!! all four of them placed top 20 and it gave sylvee and tubbo their first wins . it was fucking glorious
