okay, time to actually type up my thoughts on this AU! With some new art to make it worth it.
for context, here's part one and part two.
so the basics are, Bowser is continually trying to conquer the city and being fought off by the bros, who do have superpowers (I thought about drawing lightning around Luigi's fist but I don't know how to make that look good in lineart) and costumes and "hero names," but don't hide their faces so they don't exactly have secret identities. It's more like being an actor with a stage name. Since they're fairly average-looking dudes they don't get recognized all the time, especially when they're apart, but Mario definitely does more often than Luigi.
But even when they're not recognized by the starbucks barista, people expect a lot of them. Not just stopping Bowser, but stopping everyday problems, rescuing cats from trees or standing in for a broken TV antenna. Eventually the pressure gets to Mario and he decides to fake his death and make a run for it. He's not really thinking clearly at the time and he regrets it almost immediately, but he can't bring himself to go back and face everyone's disappointment. He needs to figure himself out first.
He does at least contact Luigi as soon as he's out of the city to reassure him he's not dead. He doesn't tell him where he's going though, and Luigi can't contact him back, he has to wait for Mario to call, so Luigi does genuinely miss him and can fake grief when he needs to without too much prompting.
Bowser, meanwhile, was genuinely not expecting to "kill" his greatest rival. He never really wanted Mario dead, he just wanted the city! But he's not going to let this opportunity pass him by- Or so he thinks, until he's beaten into a pulp by the other hero that he usually forgot about.
Okay, fine, Bowser can still work with this. Heal up, regroup, give it another try- Aaaand this time he's ganged up on by three heroes he's never even seen before. What the heck is happening?
Turns out that without Mario's charismatic leader act keeping everyone reassured (and complacent), a bunch of people are stepping into the gap. Luigi, Peach, Daisy, probably more than one Toad or Yoshi... Bowser can't plan for this! They all have different powers, different strategies, different types of banter. He's overwhelmed.
So Bowser gets the idea that he needs just one hero to fight. Maybe with a sidekick, but still. That way he can time his cool speeches and minimize the amount he gets punched in the face. He already killed one of them, maybe if he works his way through the others one at a time he'll finally win. Eventually. Someday.
He gets the super crown disguise watch (I still haven't decided if there's a real guy whose appearance and name he is copying) and finds his first hero. Mario's sidekick. Should be the easiest one to fight, right? Bowser just needs to convince him that it's better for everyone if the city only has one hero at a time. It's about continuity. It'll reassure them. Give them a symbol.
Unfortunately for Bowser (and fortunately for us) Luigi is way too nice a guy to chase off some random bear person just for recognizing him and having Opinions about all this hero stuff. Luigi talks to him, addresses his concerns, answers his questions, and the guy is actually surprisingly willing to listen. Most people who try to tell him how to do his job don't care about facts and logic!
Next thing Bowser knows, he's been invited for coffee next week. That's... fine, right? This is progress! It's not a date, it's just getting close to his target! And it's definitely not a problem that Luigi is really cute and sweet and patient and has big blue eyes and a nice smile and the warmth of his handshake lingered for the rest of the afternoon...
Everything is totally fine! 👍

Bowuigi fic where the entire reason Bowser spends all his time kidnapping Princess Peach to marry her is because the first time he kidnapped "Princess Peach" it was actually Luigi and they had an actual connection.
Like, the first time Bowser does his whole "kidnap the princess" scheme, he's intending it more as a show of force to take over another kingdom or negotiate terms of trade or something. (Not saying he's Right, but hey he was trying as a new monarch.)
So he shows up, and is like "Surrender to me the Princess, or I deploy my troops and destroy your toads!" Like an ultimatum or something.
So! In a panic, Luigi and Peach swap outfits and they go into disguise as each other. (This ultimatum gives them the time to pull this off.) Peach so she can escape and rally help to rescue Luigi, and Luigi because they don't know what Bowser intends and they don't want Peach to be in any legitimate danger. (They've literally never met Bowser before this, who knows what he's going to do!!!)
Except! Peach!Luigi and Bowser never get to determining terms of trade or anything, because they start talking and hit it off. Peach!Luigi meets Jr and Bowser sees how good "she" is with his youngest kid, and now suddenly Bowser IS thinking of marrying her and making her Jr's mama.
Bowser even says a cringe-corny pickup line to Peach!Luigi and while Kamek is facepalming in the background, "Peach" is blushing and laughing at it, enjoying their banter.
By the time Mario shows up to rescue "Peach" all "her" and Bowser have done so far is have dinner, say cringe flirts to each other, and play house with Jr. Literally nothing was accomplished except Bowser thinking he has a girlfriend now.
(Luigi might have forgotten that he probably shouldn't flirt with the dude kidnapping him, especially not dressed as someone else. Listen, he's under a lot of pressure and Bowser made him dinner and introduced him to his son, sue him.)
Luigi then assures Peach that Bowser wasn't doing anything mean or cruel to "her" and that he's actually pretty decent, all things considered (he did still kidnap her, after all.) So now they know that the next time Peach is captured (for real this time) they still, obviously, need to rescue her but it's not a critical life or death situation.
Except the next time Bowser shows up, he just tries to talk to Peach. But she won't even listen to him or give him the time of day! So! He kidnaps her, hoping that doing the same thing as last time will reignite their chemistry, but nothing he does works! She's not even that interested in talking to Jr this time around!!
Obviously Mario did something to make his Peach no longer like him! How dare he!
And so, the "kidnap the princess and marry her" schemes arise, because Bowser KNOWS somewhere in there Peach still likes him, he just has to remind her! If she spends enough time with him she'll come around!
More drama is that sometimes Bowser will kidnap Peach!Luigi again and they hit it off fine, so Bowser KNOWS his plans are working!! Peach does actually like him, he's just not trying hard enough.
Luigi doesn't even think HE'S the cause of all this Bowser drama because, like, of COURSE Bowser would want the princess? She's a princess? He doesn't realize that the ONLY reason Bowser wants the princess is because of him. (Luigi in no way thinks he's special enough to have caused all this. This could be in part because he doesn't know that "marry the princess" was never even Bowser's original scheme.)
Maybe one time during a kidnapping Bowser will lament to the real Peach about what changed since the first time he kidnapped her? They had such a connection! And Peach has to reveal to Luigi after the fact that, hey, I think I'm getting kidnapped because Bowser has a crush on you? What did you SAY to him???
Who knows what turn of events will eventually reveal the truth on who he actually connected with, or how he handles it.

Somewhere in the commotion, Mario had lost his footing, hearing an awful snapping sound, but no time to focus on the swelling pain in his ankle. The rhino is hot on their tail and if he doesn't move, there will be more to worry about than an injured foot. Mario pushes through the pain. Managing to just about keep up with DK and keep a good distance from the oncoming rhino...that is until DK gives the order to jump.
Mario rarely feels a sense of panic. But right here and right now, above a rivine with a charging rhino and a possibly broken ankle; sweat begins to pour down his face. The sound of the heavy-footed creature forces him to do a jump he knows he can't make.
The weight he gives to his ankle in an attempt to hop the ravine has him falling short.
He plummets!
Life flashing before his eyes!
The shriek that escapes him as he falls. Never to see Luigi again,  never to see Peach or Toad or DK. Suddenly he finds himself held against chestnut fur, soaring through the air. Safe.
He collapses the moment they reach solid ground. His hands cradling his ankle.
A firey glare is shot his way. 'Sorry, I guess it must have slipped my mind, what with an angry rhino on our hides!' He barks, with the burning pain; his words carry a lot of venom.
Tumblr media
He takes in a deep breath, trying to breath through the pain. A moment passes and he braces himself, attempting to stand. He's much too stubborn to accept any help.
'Porca miseria!'
----------------
Tumblr media
His fur flinches against his skin slightly against the agitated look Mario shoots him. More amused than threatened, he snorted at the display. "OK...you sound pissed off. But just think...it all could have been avoided if you didn't piss me off to start with." Satisfied with his reasoning, DK observed the other's obvious agony that he quite poorly tried to play off.
A sigh and an eyeroll led him to pinch the back of Mario's collar and hold him just millimeters above the ground so there wasn't any pressure on his ankle. "Look...you're not walking out of here without crying and attracting something worse than a rhino. Take a seat." Lifting his company up onto his shoulder to sit, DK swings around and starts padding towards civilization again where Mario could get a nice cast or at least some pain regulating herbs.
"For real...just ask if you need help next time. It's not like I can read minds."

WOO just watched the Super Mario Bros Movie!!! Mild spoilers below!
I definitely see why it didn’t get stellar reviews, but like, I still think the critics don’t know what they’re talking about LMAO. The point was to be a fun movie for the fans, not a perfect one. I love all the little references and stuff, ESPECIALLY THE MUSIC!! THE MUSIC WAS SO GOOD
I think the only real critique you could have for this film is that the story doesn’t have much explanation and connection if you don’t know the story/lore of Mario. Other than the main conflict of “bad guy Bowser is destroying the world,” you’re kind of just jumping from one location to the next with not many reasons other than to show off cool environments/levels from the games. (Also some of the dialogue is a bit awkward, but a lot of movies are like that, so it’s more of an extra issue rather than a main one)
But the thing is, that was the point! I personally didn’t mind the fact that Mario didn’t question the world’s magic and that Toad/Princess Peach/everyone else rlly didn’t question that Mario came out of nowhere because of several reasons:
Most viewers know the general story already, no need to beat around the bush and waste time
Sort of related to the previous reason: having to go through the whole process of “Why are you here?” “Idk what is this place where’s my brother?? Who’s Bowser??” OR “He’s an intruder lock him up” “No wait I don’t know how I got here!” would be super excruciating and cliche to watch and would honestly make the story worse
A lot of the magic of the world and zany physics etc is normal to its inhabitants, so it makes no sense for them to question something just as wacky happening (and Mario would also realize pretty quickly that everything is magical, so there’s not going to be an explanation anyway)
Explaining the world more makes it lose some magic—keep it up to the imagination!!
So yeah, I’m glad they just jumped straight into the story and took certain things seriously while completely brushing over other stuff. It’s just a fun movie!
And my favourite part has got to be Luigi just getting super fast at the end and having Skill without training lmaoooo

let's play wii
modern!au
characters: xiao, kazuha, venti ➡ mentions: aether warnings: n/a
notes: 4nemo are roomies !
xiao:
xiao looks over you, concerned with how you're holding the wii remote. it isn't strapped to your wrist and you're holding it loosely.
"[y/n], you should really strap the remote on you," he cautions while waving his own remote while sitting. you don't turn away from the screen in front of you and continue to dance to one direction.
"but xiao, i'm in the middle of getting five stars!" you huff, finally reaching four stars. from your peripheral vision, you see xiao just sitting on the floor with an oversized mint green hoodie.
"i don't understand how you always get perfect when i'm the one dancing and you're the one sitting," you quietly fume, unable to accept the fact how you always lose to xiao when all he did is lift the remote up and down.
xiao shrugs, adjusting the strap to his own controller before moving it around again. "you should really wear the strap on your controller, my roommates wont appreciate it if you accidentally fling your remote on our TV..."
he stands and grabs hold of your wrist, grabbing the remote. you whine, pointing at the screen "i was this close to getting another star!"
"you can play now, "xiao takes the strap and puts it around your wrist, tightening it.
you sigh and xiao frowns.
"what's wrong?"
you sigh louder and point to the screen, "you won, again."
the end of the song arrives, showing 'happy' and 'jazzy's' scores. jazzy at over five thousand, and hapy just a few numbers off.
xiao looks at you then to the screen before the corner of his lips curl upwards. it's not noticeable at first, that's why you did a double take.
you slap a hand over your mouth, "xiao!"
xiao tilts his head, "yes?"
"did you just smi-"
"beat you? yeah, i did."
kazuha:
he sets up the game and bounces back when he pops the disc in.
the familiar tune of the game chirps in your ear.
"are you ready for defeat, [y/n?]" he cheekily asks, handing a remote with the second dot at the bottom glowing blue.
you roll your eyes with a smile adorning your face, "no, because you're the one who's going to cry when i beat you."
"how daring of you to make such an assumption." kazuha smiles, wrapping an elastic around his locks before the game starts. "you lost at wii sports already, who's to say you're not going to lose in wii sports resort?"
you gasp, hitting him playfully. "i'm the best you at wii sports bowling, how dare you," you say remembering the wii characters jump in circles when you hit a strike.
the red strand of kazuha's hair falls out of the elastic, so he tucks it behind his ear instead of re-doing the low ponytail. he lets the game start by pressing A and B on the remote.
"anything you wanna play?" he asks.
you grin, "you studied the art of the blade when you were younger, right? let's do swordplay. get ready to lose."
kazuha glances at you warily before pressing 'swordplay: duel,' "i'm the one who's going to win."
"HA. good luck."
kazuha presses 'two players' and steadies the remote to get the game started. you do the same and look at your little mii characters.
two rounds in, and kazuha has one point while you have the other.
his sticks his tongue out, concentrating on blocking then attacking while your little mii character wobbles before attacking back. from the side of your vision, you see kazuha's roommate enter the living room where you play. xiao has never looked so confused, but he stands by the door, unmoving and holding two bags full for grocery.
you whip your wii remote from side to side, pushing kazuha's character at the edge of the stadium and see it plunge in the water.
you laugh in triumph, waving to xiao "did you see that?! your roommate is a loser!"
kazuha smiles, setting his remote down. "actually, that was our practice round i believe. [y/n] said so."
"no that was for real. just admit defeat."
venti:
you swerve your princess peach kart, avoiding the red shell venti threw at you. the room is intense.
you hear aether cheering you from behind, hyping you up.
you're placed second, just a hair behind venti's toad kart. you wanted to push venti, "STOP DROPPING BANANA PEELS."
"STOP THROWING SHELLS AT ME," he screams, dropping another banana peel then takes a shortcut.
you threw another shell and he spins off.
aether walks out of the living room and comes back with a bowl of cereal. he eats, watching the screen with focus. your kart passes by venti's and you laugh in delight.
venti bites his lip, leaning towards his right as if moving his body would help steer the kart in screen. he gets a boost and drives by next to you. you try to push his kart off, but he dodges it.
you press different buttons on your controller, hoping it would make a difference so you can cross the finish line first. luckily, you didn't need to press different buttons because aether 'accidentally' knocks venti over, making him lose control of his toad kart.
"aeTHeRR???" venti complains, watching you take first place and him second.
you high-five aether, passing him your remote for his turn. "your turn to beat the crap out of venti."
you pinch venti's cheek and blow a raspberry, "you're the one who LEFT ME in lego: star wars. while you were on the next stage, i was dying with the roger-roger droids."
"it was a mistake!"
"you laughed at me!"

Ghosts
I initially had the idea to do this fic a while ago, even before I started writing my first Super Mario fic. I finally got around to it for Halloween after being reminded of the idea via coming across a fanart piece that depicted a similar idea. I'd link it because it's sort of fic inspiration but it's buried deep in the Bowuigi tag on Tumblr and in the reblogs on my main blog.
~
Of course the hotel was haunted, why wouldn’t it be? Just when he thought he was finally free of having to deal with ghosts, this had to happen. Finding the Poltergust in the garage – indicating E. Gadd was here somewhere too, probably trapped in a portrait – was a sheer stroke of luck because Luigi had neglected to bring his own ghost hunting equipment. This one was the new model E. Gadd had been telling him about too which was neat expect for the fact that he now had to use it to deal with a hotel full of ghosts.
Before getting to that though, he glanced around the garage one last time to make sure he was alone before pulling out his phone. He needed to call Bowser, tell him not to come day after tomorrow after all. They’d been planning to have him show up at the hotel a couple days later and then finally reveal their relationship to Mario and Peach because away from home while on vacation when everyone was already in a good mood seemed like a good place to do that. But ghosts had happened instead so it’d have to wait.
Though it wasn’t super late into the night yet, hopefully Bowser would already be sleeping so Luigi could just leave a message. There was a very real chance Bowser would want to come anyway to punch the ghosts over their plans being ruined and only get himself in trouble. Luigi would rather not have to try to dissuade him from that so… He picked up on the third ring.
“Hey, what’s up?” he said. “Aren’t you normally in bed by now?”
“Uh… yeah but um… well turns out the hotel’s haunted, it was a trap from King Boo. He uh… yeah, stuff happened and I have to deal with it.” He needed to save Mario and Peach, the Toads too. “So, you probably shouldn’t come after all. We’ll have to tell them… later.” Both of them had kept finding reasons to put it off, figures after finally committing to a plan something would go wrong with it.
“He got Mario again, didn’t he?”
“Yep and Peach and the Toads and probably E. Gadd too, since his car is here but he’s not.”
Bowser grunted. “How does King Boo keep beating Mario when I never could?”
“Please not now.” Mario was in danger; Luigi didn’t want to hear about Bowser’s rivalry with him when that was a thing.
“Oh uh… all right, sorry. You okay?” All the gruff bravado was gone from Bowser’s voice now. Instead he sounded concerned which meant Luigi’s plea had been filled with more desperation than he’d intended.
“No, not really.” How could he be in this situation? What if he couldn’t beat King Boo this time? Or what if… King Boo took it further and killed Mario before Luigi could get there to even try to save him?
“Right, you’re afraid of ghosts, huh?”
“I know I probably shouldn’t be anymore.” He’d dealt with two full hauntings and captured King Boo twice as well so logically he shouldn’t be afraid anymore but alas, his fear had never been rooted in anything logical. “But… they’re still scary.” He leaned against E. Gadd’s car, holding back a grown. This ‘adventure’ had only just started and he was already tired.
“All righty then,” Bowser said as if reaching some kind of decision. “I’ll go over and beat the ghosts up for you. Except me in however long it takes my fastest air ship to get there.”
“What? No, no, no, you don’t need to come down here. I can handle it on my own.” It was too late though; the line was dead.
Luigi groaned as he flipped his phone closed to slip back into his pockets. Now he had to save his brother and friends and watch out for when Bowser arrived to hopefully make sure King Boo didn’t get him too. Could the night get any worse?
***
The hotel was rather drab looking in the dark of night, there wasn’t a light on anywhere inside it. It had looked much better in the brochures so it was a disappointment all around. Vacation wasn’t what Bowser was here for though so whatever. Maybe a dark hotel would serve as a good arena to beat up some ghosts and King Boo though.
Mario was going to be so shocked when he saw it was Bowser who’d save him this time. That would count as finally besting him too, right? Defeating the person who’d defeated him was basically a victory over both of them, right? So, this was going to be a fun outing after all.
With a signal from him, the ship flew in closer to hover over the roof. “Circle at a distance until I call you back,” he instructed the shy guy at the wheel before vaulting over the edge. In hindsight, even with how much it would’ve slowed down the ship, he probably should’ve brought in a troop of minions for backup but he’d been in such a hurry and hadn’t wanted to wait for an entire troop to get ready to broad it and now it was too late. Whatever though, he could handle King Boo and his tiny boos by himself.
He landed on the hotel’s roof with a thud, the tiles cracking beneath his weight. Glancing around he was disappointed to see that the roof was empty. What his exact plan was, he had no idea but he didn’t a plan, he’d just wing it like he normally did and it should be fine.
The roof was pretty barren and thus it didn’t take him long to locate a possible way down so he could enter in properly through a window or something. Before he could start to descend though…
“Why are you here?”
He snapped around to see King Boo had come out of seemingly nowhere. He was holding a portrait of Princess Peach, which knowing King Boo’s powerset, meant it probably was her. Bowser had given up courting her a long time ago and had only continued to kidnap her to lure Mario in for another rematch. He no longer even did that because Luigi had decided to convince him not to which had ultimately resulted in their current relationship. But it still made him mad because if anyone was going to capture her, it should’ve been him. He at least treated her right, the way a princess should be treated, not trapping her in a portrait. So…
“I’m here to kick your ass,” he said with a slight growl as he balled up his hands into fists. He would’ve preferred to start with a blast of fire but he wasn’t sure how flammable Peach’s portrait was and he wasn’t going to risk damaging it and possibly her.
King Boo raised an eyebrow and laughed. “You’ll make a nice portrait so sure, I won’t question my good fortune, let’s fight.”
Bowser lunged at him even before finished speaking, intending to grab and rip Peach’s portrait out of his hands. But King Boo floated higher, dodging with seemingly little effort. And he was out of Bowser’s range completely, such bullshit.
With a flash of light from King Boo’s crown, there was suddenly an empty portrait floating beside him. “Sorry this isn’t much of a fight, I got stuff to do,” he said as it starting glowing, pulling Bowser in.
Like hell was he gonna be turned into wall art. He’d blast the damn thing to bits with fire and then…
 -
Next thing he knew, he was indoors and looking down at Luigi instead of up at King Boo. It felt kind of like waking up after a too long nap. He breathed out the breath he’d been taking, releasing a puff of smoke instead of the mighty blast of fire he’d intended it to be. He glanced around at the room, it seemed to be an office of some sort. “What happened? Where am I?” he said as he looked back down.
Luigi looked tired but otherwise mostly fine. He had the Poltergust on his back but a different model than the one he’d shown Bowser. This one had a clear tank with something green inside it. “You were captured by King Boo and turned into a portrait,” he said. “Why did you have come? I tried to tell you not to.”
“Because I wanted to.” Bowser always did whatever he wanted.
“Yeah but why?”
“You’re scared of ghosts, I wanted to beat them up for you.” And he still would, he just had to try a little harder. There were few problems that couldn’t be solved with a good punch and/or blast of fire.
“Oh uh… thanks for the thought.” The slight blush on Luigi’s face as he lifted his free hand to rub the back of his neck was cute and made look slightly less tired. “But I um… I’m fine. I can handle it by myself.”
Bowser sighed as he crossed his arms. He wasn’t too good at reading other people’s emotions but… “You don’t seem fine.”
Luigi deflated a little, letting out a heavy sigh. “It’s scary and I’m tired and… scared and stuff. Gotta save my bro though so…” he trialed off with a shrug. “You should probably go the garage but uh… I’m not sure how I’m going to explain your presence to E. Gadd and the Toads, that’s going to be awkward but I’m not sure where else would be safe.”
“Fuck that, it’s personal now, I’m going to beat up King Boo.” No way would Bowser ever stand for such a humiliating defeat. So he turned to march out the room.
Before he could take more a few steps though Luigi grabbed his arm pulling him back. Bowser could easily just drag him along or pick up and carry him with him or even just shake him off entirely but didn’t.
“You can’t,” Luigi said. “He’ll just turn you into a portrait again so… please don’t. I already have to save Mario and Peach, I don’t want to have to save you again too.” He sounded desperate and scared and… it made Bowser feel bad. “So just… let me do it.”
“You’re scared of ghosts though.” So he shouldn’t even want to do this.
“Yeah but… you need special equipment for hunting ghosts and… I’ve never lost to them so… I can handle it.” He was full on hugging Bower’s arm now, making it even harder to pull away.
Bowser could only sigh at that. “All right, fine, I’ll just help you then.” He could do that much at least. “I’m not letting that bastard get away with beating me so easily and I’m not letting you face the ghosts on your own when you’re so scared of them. And there’s nothing you can do to convince me to hide in some stupid safe place instead.”
Luigi looked like he wanted to protest but sighed instead as he rested the side of his face against Bowser’s upper arm. “Okay, that works, I guess. It’s… kind of nice to have some company anyway I suppose, it gets kind of lonely sometimes.”
Bowser grunted instead of trying to come up with a reply because he wasn’t sure how to. “Let’s go,” he said instead, gesturing towards the rooms exit. He wanted to see how Luigi fought ghosts, he’d been curios about what that was like ever since Luigi had told him about it. “I can’t wait to see the look on Mario’s face when I help save him.”
Luigi chuckled nervously. “That’s uh… certainly going to be an interesting meeting.”

Mutual Abduction Part 2
I was so going to finish this fic in one go, but my friend’s cat got terminally ill today and I have to work out how to comfort her without going round and giving her a hug as that’s not allowed. England is in another lockdown, hope you’re all doing ok out there. I promise to post part 3 later this week, and I promise it will contain proper smut. This part is mainly just weird flirting (and before you ask, yes this is one of my moves and yes it does normally work). You can read Part 1 here and I’ve created a masterlist now too. If you want me to tag you in Part 3 ask in the comments.
Summary: following your abduction by aliens, you’re now trapped in a room with Dylan O’Brien and have to entertain yourselves Pairing: Female Reader x Dylan O’Brien Warnings: So much swearing, imprisonment (non-violent), references to smut Word count: 1,431 Taglist: @hernameisnoellex3 @beautiful-thinking
Tumblr media
Dylan looked around the room slowly, then back at you. You took a deep breath, not really sure how to handle this.
“Am I dreaming?” he said, running a hand through his scruffy hair distractedly. “One minute I’m on my bed at home, the next minute I’m here. I’m definitely dreaming, right? It’s the only thing that makes any sense”
“Well if it helps, you can pretend you’re dreaming” you replied carefully, not wanting to freak him out more. “But I’m pretty certain it’s real, and we’ve been abducted by aliens. Don’t panic. Seriously – I did that when I first arrived, and it definitely didn’t help”
“Aliens?! No no no – sticking to the dreaming theory. It seems like one of my dreams – weird situation, attractive woman. Although if it was one of my dreams, you’d be wearing less clothes” he looked at you contemplatively, as if he expected you to start removing them.
You let out an amused half snort. “Huh. Yeah…about that” you started and then paused, not really sure how to explain. “Fuck I can’t do this. Hey KITT?”
Yes human female Y/N
At the voice Dylan started and looked around again. “Don’t worry” you told him gently “It seems to be some kind of AI, so far it’s been pretty helpful.” You placed a hand on his arm in an attempt to comfort him and then turned your head towards the red light on the wall. “Can you explain to Dylan why we’re here?”
Certainly We are studying human mating habits You have been selected Once you have mated you will be returned to Earth We mean you no harm
“And before you ask, they said it’s not a human breeding program” you added “Weirdly, I kind of believe them. They’d probably provide protection if we asked”
At that a box of condoms appeared on the small table. You shifted awkwardly and gave him a small smile. “See” you said, “they’ve given me everything I’ve asked for, even if their timing is a little unfortunate”. You side-eyed the red light - in terms of seduction techniques, magically appearing contraception wasn’t the best.
Dylan raised an eyebrow and looked at you. “Right, let me get this straight. I’ve been kidnapped by aliens, and they want me to have sex with you before we can go home?”
“Pretty much sums it up” you stated. “Although I’m not sure if they’ve got any requirements beyond the sex part – it’s their study not mine. Hey Holly?”
Yes human female Y/N
“What exactly do you need us to do here? Mating habits is a little vague – is it just the sex?” you questioned, secretly hoping it wasn’t. Dylan had featured heavily in your recent fantasies; you couldn’t help wanting to play some of them out.
We are studying all aspects of mating We would like to learn about a lot of aspects we have only gathered from literature These include…
There was a pause, as if the computer was accessing some kind of databank
Flirting Pick ups French Kissing Hickeys Hand Jobs Blow Jobs Eating Out Spanking Choking Nipp-
“Ok, ok!” you yelled, feeling your face heat up “That’s…um…plenty to be…getting on with. Do we…er…have to do all of that before you send us home?”
No We will terminate the experiment when both subjects are satisfied
“Right, that’s pretty clear then.”
You looked at Dylan, feeling suddenly uncomfortable. He however appeared more relaxed than before, a twinkle playing in his amber eyes.
“This is so a dream. Fancy giving me a hand job while I finger you?” he smirked
Now your face was definitely hot. You swallowed hard and found yourself unable to drag your eyes from his.
“Let’s just…ease into this” you mumbled, and his smile widened “Down boy – I mean let’s try the flirting thing first.”
You grabbed his hand and led him over to the couch, which was large and black and made of very squishy looking leather. As you sat down, he kept hold of your fingers and ran one of his against your palm, sending a shiver of anticipation up your arm. Resisting the urge to skip the talking and clamber straight into his lap, you settled next to him with your legs tucked underneath you.
He spoke first “I’m not that great with flirting really. Always just met people at work, or through friends. Never been able to just walk up to someone in a bar or club.”
“Well hotshot actors probably don’t need to use pick-up lines.” you said teasingly “You can just wait for people to come to you. It’s a bit more difficult for us mere mortals. C’mon though – you must have some moves – hit me with your best”
“No, no really – zero moves. I’m moveless. How about you – what’s your most fool proof method?” he asked, raising one eyebrow.
“You’ll laugh”
“Doubtful. Go on, hit me up” he smirked
“Right, you asked for it” you told him “hey JARVIS?”
Yes human female Y/N
“Can you set Mario Kart up on this thing and give us two controllers?” you gestured towards what looked like a flatscreen tv set into the wall opposite the sofa
Searching data banks Sending information to interplanetary graphic device screen Certainly human female Y/N
And two controllers appeared on the sofa next to you as the familiar intro came up on the screen.
“Mario Kart” Dylan’s eyes widened disbelievingly “your big move is…Mario Kart”
“Nope. My big move is beating you at Mario Kart. Knock their egos down to size, then build them back up again. Works every time. 100% success rate” you laughed at him, tossing one of the controllers in his direction.
Dylan looked thoughtful “are you sure it doesn’t work because by this point they’ve already come home with you? Kind of a foregone conclusion.”
“No it works earlier than that - ‘do you play Mario Kart?’ is an awesome opening line” you smiled “fool proof”
“And what if they say no?”
“Well...” you lowered your voice and bit your bottom lip suggestively, looking at him through lowered lashes “would you like to learn? Maybe I could…teach you a thing or two. Back at my place”
Dylan looked at your lips and swallowed “huh. Oh...ok I see what you mean. That’s kinda hot.” He seemed to be breathing more heavily. “Not sure about the beating me bit though, prepare to have your ass kicked”
“No way hotshot. Choose your character. I’m always Toad. You seem more like a Peach type” you teased, already mashing buttons
He looked at you disbelievingly “Oh it’s on. I was going to let you win because you’re sexy, but now you’re going down”
“No, you’re going down. And when you’re beaten, you can go down on me” you promised. Dylan nearly dropped his controller in surprise. Ha - this was going to be easy, you thought to yourself.
It was fun, and in the end he was pretty easy to beat. You let him win a couple of races until he let his guard down, and then deployed your sneak attacks. Sneak attacks included nudging your leg with his, smoothing a hand down his denim-clad thigh, leaning forward until the curve of your tits jutted up, and some really suggestive smack talk. By the end you could tell he was frustrated, breathless and -  you glanced down at his lap – already half hard.
“So…” you pondered, turning towards him on the couch as on the screen Toad jumped up and down on the podium “That was my move. Did it work?”
He smiled slowly at you, his eyes full of lust and something else you couldn’t place “That was incredible, but…” he hesitated, and your heart sank “this isn’t a dream is it? It’s too real, and in a dream you wouldn’t have beaten me”
“Look, don’t overthink it” you reassured him. “I say just relax, go along with it, worry about the wider meaning later. Live in the moment”
“Hmm” he was still hesitating
“What would help you here?” you asked “I’m sure Skynet can get us some accessories. Handcuffs, lube, blindfold…”
At your words the items started appearing on the small table across the room. You giggled and continued on.
“Cock rings, vibrators, dildo, sex swing” enough stuff was piling up that some of it fell to the floor with a crash “love eggs, butt plugs, paddles, tick..”
“Argh! Shut the fuck up” Dylan interrupted forcefully, and at your answering smirk he reached out and fisted a hand in the material of your top, pulling you hard towards him and silencing you with a desperate kiss.

@febuwhump day 25 car accident
turtle shells
summary
He set the karts up at the finish line, and frowned when Tony tried handing him a helmet.
“I’m Spider-Man,” said Peter. “I don’t need a helmet.”
“You do have a really thick skull, sure,” Tony told him. “But even your stubbornness isn’t enough to save you from a head injury.”
“That’s a low blow.”
“Truth hurts.”
OR
After Tony wins in Mario Kart, Peter decides they better have a real life race with go-karts to settle the score, with chaotic results.
It all started with a blizzard, and a Nintendo Switch.
The arctic blast that swept through the East Coast, and the snow that piled up as a result of the never thawing temperatures, trapped Peter inside the lake house. What was supposed to have been a weekend visit turned into a week-long visit, because Tony and May both didn’t want to risk him driving back into the city and getting stranded in the wintery nightmare.
So, Peter was stuck inside, and was forced to attend classes and do his schoolwork online, which took up considerably less time than going to school in person.
He spent most of the day bored out of his mind. That was where the Nintendo Switch had come in.
He had been laid out on the couch, under a thin blanket, with just the tips of his brown hair sticking out, when he let out a frustrated groan.
“This is so boring,” he complained.
The blanket got ripped off him, and Tony stared down at him. “Getting off the couch might help with that.”
“And do what?” asked Peter. “There’s nothing to do.”
“Why don’t you play some video games?” asked Tony. “Like a normal teenager?”
Before Peter could protest that he was even bored of video games, that was how long he’d been trapped inside, Tony was off collecting the Nintendo Switch controllers.
“Move your legs,” he ordered, when he got back to the couch.
Peter glared at him before he sat up and swung his legs off the couch, sinking his feet into the carpet. Tony threw a controller at him. It bounced off his arm and landed on the cushion.
“Hey,” said Peter. He rubbed his arm.
“Oh, stop. That didn’t hurt.”
“It’s the principle.” Peter picked up the controller. “What are we playing?”
“Mario Karts.”
“Mario Kart.”
“Yeah,” said Tony. “That’s what I said.”
“No you said -” He stopped, and shook his head, not understanding why old people bothered with video games if they were going to be so cringe about it. “Nevermind.”
Peter took control and breezed through the setup screen so he wouldn’t have to wait for Tony to figure it out. They picked their karts and their characters. Peter picked Toad, and Tony picked Peach, and then they were off to the tracks.
It started exactly how Peter expected it would. He was in the lead, and Tony struggled, or at least pretended to. Pretended because by the last half of the second lap Tony kept a pace that put him just barely behind Peter, and in the last half of the third Tony hit him with a shell and soared past the finish line, taking first place.
“How did you -” started Peter. It hit him. That Tony had just been pretending to be bad that whole just to catch him off guard and beat him at the last second. “You’re actually good?!?”
“I’m a stay at home dad, Pete,” said Tony. “What do you think Morgan and I do all day?”
“Pretty sure Pepper would disapprove,” muttered Peter.
“Relax, officer, we abide by screen time,” said Tony. He checked his watch. “Which reminds me, you have about forty-five minutes left. Just enough time for you to lose to your old man over and over again.”
“You’re the absolute worst,” he told him, on the count of suggesting he was young enough to still have screen time and the count of him having the audacity to be good at video games.
“Peter, I’m a literal tech genius,” said Tony. “And not to mention -”
“-savior of the universe I know. You mention it all the time, actually.”
Tony moved right past that criticism. “Just saying, how could you think I’d be bad at this? It’s my hometurf.”
“Whatever,” said Peter. “Let’s just start a new race.”
This time Peter was determined to win, and he figured, now that he understood Tony was a hassler and had to rely on petty tactics like turtle shells to win, he stood a better chance. Except he didn’t. Time and time again he came in second place, until Tony took a look at his watch and declared video game time was over.
“Go do your schoolwork,” said Tony, shutting off the system, despite Peter challenging him to one more game.
“I’m done with my schoolwork,” said Peter. “You’re just afraid you’re gonna lose.”
“Statistics aren’t on your side, bud,” said Tony. He put a hand on Peter’s shoulder. “Just admit that I’m better at Mario Karts.”
Peter shoved him away.
For the next couple of days, he let his slightly illogical and petty rage at being defeated in Mario Kart by someone who couldn’t remember to say the name correctly simmer into something creative.
He wandered into the garage with a brilliant idea. He’d build his own go-karts. He’d build two, with exactly the same specs, then he and Tony could have a real life race to see who was really the better racer.
*
By the time Peter finished his building and designing his karts, spring had arrived. The ground was soft with mud, and the air was warm in a way, but cold in others.
“Truth hurts.” Tony shoved the helmel into his stomach, and Peter accepted it that time, though he didn’t plan on wearing it.
He got settled into the driver’s seat, appreciating his own handy work. The seat was comfortable and cozy.
He threw the helmet on the ground when Tony wasn’t looking. They waited for Morgan to wave the checkered flag Peter had picked up from the dollar store for this specific event, and once it was waved, Peter floored it.
He zoomed off, leaving Tony in his dust, where he belonged.
Peter was pretty confident he was going to win that time, up until he started to hear Tony behind him, getting closer and closer. He turned his head to gage his distance, but that turned out to be a big mistake.
His kart hit something that was on the ground, and jerked into another direction. The wrong direction. He hit a tree with enough force to fling him out of the cozy seat. He banged his head against the tree trunk, and fell first to his knees, then to his side.
Peter’s head hit the ground, and gave a muffled whine.
“Would I be a bad mentor if I said I told you so?” asked Tony, after pulling up and parking his go-kart.
“Yes,” said Peter, his face still in the dirt. “Technically you just did say it.” He wiggled around on the ground, hoping to find a comfortable position there, anything that might make the pounding ache in his head disappear.
“What’d you hit, anyway?”
“Don’t care.”
“Oh,” said Tony.
Peter looked over out of curiosity, but very much wished he hadn’t. Tony held up a now broken, giant plastic toy turtle shell. Nintendo was stamped across bits of the broken plastic, and it was a replica of the shells in the game.
“Guess these will always be your downfall.” Tony tossed the turtle shell inside of the wreck go-kart. “How bad is the pain, kid?”
“Bad enough that I’m still laying on the ground,” said Peter. “And not murdering that stupid toy.”
“To be fair your tires did a lot of damage to it.”
“I need to finish the job.”
Peter raised his hand, thinking he might muster enough energy to crawl over and at least chuck that thing into the lake, but the pain in his head blared. It pinned him to the ground. He groaned.
“Okay,” said Tony. He bent down and put a hand on his arm. “Let’s get you back to the house, Toad.”
*
Tony did most of the work walking back to the lake house. He helped Peter inside, and helped him to sit on the couch.
He made a few phone calls, and before Peter knew what was happening, a yellow portal appeared in the Stark’s living room. A confused looking Bruce Banner stepped out of it, and the ring of yellow disappeared as quickly as it had appeared.
“You know, Tony,” said Bruce. “I’m pretty sure Strange is going to blacklist you if you keep abusing his wizard powers.”
“Abusing?” asked Tony. “This is an emergency. My kid hit his head.”
“He’s Spider-Man. He hits his head all the time,” said Bruce. “And Strange said you’re disrespecting the sanctity of the ancient arts.”
“Well I guess you’re gonna have to drive back to the compound, then,” said Tony. “You can take Peter’s go-kart. The one he wrecked, after so wisely refusing to wear a helmet.”
Bruce’s confusion turned to Peter. “You didn’t wear a helmet?”
“No lectures,” whined Peter. “Head hurts.”
Bruce sighed. He examined him, asking him questions and shining a light in his eyes.
“He’s probably got a concussion,” said Bruce. “But it looks like a mild one, so just keep him rested. No triggers, like screens. No phones. No TV or video games.”
“That’s perfectly fine with me, Dr. Banner,” said Peter. “Never playing video games again.”
“He’s dramatic,” said Tony. “And a sore loser.”
“Uh huh,” said Bruce, with caution.
He called Strange right away, probably wisely not wanting to get involved with an obvious Peter and Tony competition. Strange grumpily agreed to portal him back, and just like that, it was just the two of them once again.
“What can I do for you, kid?”
“Let me win at Mario Kart.
Tony laughed.
“I’m being serious,” muttered Peter, though it was only half true. “I need this.”
“Why?” Tony sat down on the armchair next to the couch.
“I dunno,” he said. His words were unguarded and way too honest. Peter blamed the concussion. “You’re just so good at everything. It’d be nice not to stand in your shadow.”
“Oh,” said Tony. “That’s easy. You’re better than the hero thing than I ever was -”
“-come on, Tony.”
“Seriously, kid, you understand people and they like you for it. And you’ve saved my life more than I’ve saved yours.”
“...What?”
“Yep,” said Tony. “There was the time with Squidward, the mission with those creatures that looked like trolls, that time on the boat…” Tony continued with his list, and Peter listened, shocked.
Maybe it was the concussion, but he’d forgotten about half of those instances.
“Okay,” said Peter, after Tony was finished with his list. He let his eyes slid shut. “You can have Mario Karts.”
“It’s Mario Kart.”
“I’m concussed,” said Peter. “What’s your excuse?”
“My parental right to troll my children whenever possible.”
“You’re the worst.”
“And I take pride in it. Now rest up, so we can redo our race with helmets this time, and I can beat you in real life as well.”
“Dream on,” said Peter, though he was the one about to fall asleep.
He started to drift off. He felt a blanket being tossed over him. Peter got lost in a dream where Mario Kart had an option to remove turtle shells from the game, and Morgan had learned to pick up her toys.

Super Mario Advance Playthrough
Tumblr media
Fighter: Princess Peach Toadstool.
Game: Super Mario Advance, Wii U virtual console (GBA). First Released on March 21st 2001.
Fighter Bio.
Princess Peach Toadstool, known as Princess Peach more commonly now is the crown Princess of the Mushroom Kingdom. She is famous and well liked both within her Kingdom and in a lot of locations outside of it. Peach’s role in the Mario series varies with her most common role often being kidnapped by Bowser, but other villains have also captured her before. Based on my estimate, I believe she has been kidnapped roughly 31 times so far in the games including all spin-offs. Sometimes these kidnappings take place before the game starts meaning she only appears in the ending, other times she’ll have a role in the game before it happens and sometimes it will be a short part of the game like for a single chapter in one of the RPGs. Often in that last example it relates to another one of her roles, being a playable character who is either a party member or optional character to play as, with her sometimes becoming playable after being rescued. In the cases where Peach is not kidnapped immediately, she’ll often tell Mario and the others what they need to do when a crisis is taking place, advising them where to head to next or setting them off at the start of the game on their quest. Being captured so often, one skill Peach seems to have picked up over the years is her ability to often stealthily slip around her captors, sometimes simply working out a way to send Mario assistance such as items and advice, and other times managing to spy on her captor’s plans. Often due to the location she’s being held in she is unable to fully escape from her captors however, or in some cases her sense of duty to her also captured people will make her not try to leave without them.
The Mario series doesn’t have a solid timeline, so a lot of this is just my own personal ideas, but unless a game is explicitly taking place in the past with Baby versions of the characters, I tend to just go by the order in which the games are released regarding character’s histories in the franchise, something possibly evidenced by a scene in Super Mario Sunshine where F.L.U.D.D. searches its databank and has data on Mario’s adventures prior to that game as past events. I also personally like to consider the Paper Mario series broadly canon to the Mario series as a whole so I will be including aspects from that here. Peach first met the Mario Bros and Bowser back when they were babies, with her first meeting with them being during the events of Yoshi’s Island DS. In this game Peach was one of the babies who the Yoshis are trying to help get home, with her ability when riding a Yoshi being to use her parasol which allows them to ride on high winds. The next appearance of Baby Princess Peach was during the Shroob invasion where her older self went back in time and was kidnapped by the Shroobs. Baby Bowser planned to kidnap Baby Peach, however he was interrupted first by the Baby Mario Bros and then by the invading Shroobs. Baby Princess Peach actually manages to not be kidnapped throughout the game instead remaining in the future Castle with a young Toadsworth who is her caretaker. Following these two events (excluding spinoffs with Baby Peach where she appears but there’s no story such as Mario Kart) the Mario Bros seemingly left the Mushroom Kingdom possibly for New Donk City. Despite their absence, Bowser didn’t attempt any more kidnapping plots for some time, possibly not until the Mario Bros returned to the Mushroom Kingdom following the events of Donkey Kong and Mario Bros. Super Mario Bros seems to be the first time Bowser successfully kidnapped Princess Peach taking over her Kingdom entirely until the Mario Bros managed to defeat him and save her. In the backstory to this game, Bowser apparently used magic to transform the people of the Mushroom Kingdom into various objects and then kidnapped the Princess to stop her from turning them back. It’s due to this as well as Peach’s abilities in some games that it seems she is capable of certain forms of magic, often of the healing variety. It is only rarely however Peach is shown to use these abilities.
When it comes to her personality, Peach was probably the earliest character in the series to have dialogue, with her having lines in the very first game and most others after, whereas other characters like Bowser would more often only have dialogue in the instruction book at most. In the very first game it was fairly basic with her simply thanking Mario or Luigi for saving her and offering them the chance to take on a new quest, which was a harder version of the game. Super Mario Bros 3 however had her show a bit more personality, with her making a joke to her saviour at the end of the adventure based on the infamous line Toad would tell the player in the original game, “Thank you Mario but our Princess is in another castle.” Before telling them she was just kidding. Peach’s personality varies a little from game to game, but usually the main aspects of it are that she’s kind, generous and when not captured is good at advising the others what needs to be done. Despite being fairly reliable, she can sometimes be somewhat whimsical, especially in spin-off games with her often enjoying frolicking and singing, and she can when pushed show a fairly strong angry side, with her either aggressively convincing a character such as Luigi to go and save his brother or reacting angrily to those who mock her. Finally, despite her longstanding friendship with Mario, she’s willing to tell him off if he’s getting too carried away, almost abandoning him and Bowser at one point when they start squabbling and she just wants to go home.
Friends: Princess Peach is fairly popular throughout the Mushroom Kingdom and beyond and as such a lot of characters know of her even if they haven’t met her before. Peach’s subjects seem to all adore her a lot with them often being depressed when she’s absent. Of her closer relationships, her closest arguably is with Mario, with him often rescuing her and sometimes her returning the favour. Their relationship tends to be teased sometimes as possibly romantic, but there are times Peach will find Mario a bit too overbearing. What is clear is that they trust each other entirely and when possible will often work together. Peach is close with Luigi also although not to the same degree as Mario, however she will still in some games treat Luigi the same way she does Mario in the ending when Luigi is the character being played as, such as giving him a kiss on the cheek. Later games have shown she extends this to anyone who helps her as a sign of gratitude, including Yoshi, Toad and Toadette. The next closest relationship Peach has is with Toadsworth her elderly steward who has taken care of her since she was a baby. Toadsworth often worries for the Princess’s safety and tries to accompany her whenever he can. Toad is Peach’s attendant and often fulfils Toadsworth’s role in his absence sticking by her side when possible. Toad is fiercely loyal to Peach despite his cowardice and will often try to help her out however he can.
Toadette is someone Peach gets along with, however the two don’t interact that often with Toadette often doing other roles to help Mario. Peach has a connection to the Yoshis due to them saving her with the other Star Children when she was a baby, however besides this there is only one instance of her ever riding Yoshi, which is in the ending of Super Mario World where she rides Yoshi on the journey back to his house after Bowser is defeated. Of the rest of the cast Peach seems to get along fairly well with most of them, with possibly her best friend being Princess Daisy who she often partners with in various sports and other games and the two will also act as friendly rivals when in competition with each other.
Enemies/Rivals: The relationship between Bowser and Peach seems to have developed over the years. Initially Bowser seemed to aim to capture Peach simply because she was the princess of the Kingdom he was invading and then because she could undo the magic he used to transform her citizens. Eventually however, Bowser seemed to develop an affinity for Peach, one which she does not reciprocate at all. Due to this, Bowser’s aim is always to kidnap Peach and try to convince her to marry him rather than just destroy her as with his other enemies. Bowser also at one point told his son Bowser Jr that Peach was his Mother, which led to her being shocked when Bowser Jr claimed this. Despite Junior revealing later on he knew Peach wasn’t his real Mother, he still referred to her as Mama and seems to like the idea of it, kidnapping Peach sometimes so she can be with Bowser. Although Peach does not get along with Bowser or his troops, she will work with them when needed, and in cases where Bowser helps against another enemy she is willing to do things such as send him a cake as thanks. Beyond this, Peach has had a few other enemies, often them being villains who kidnap her as part of their plan such as Sir Grodus or Cackletta. Peach has fought against a couple of villains herself including Count Bleck’s minions, Smithy’s Gang and Wart, leader of the 8 bits who invaded Subcon.
Crossovers with other Smash characters: Being from the Mario series, Princess Peach has had a fair few crossovers, although not as many as the Mario Bros themselves. Super Mario RPG had Peach playable as part of the party, and therefore she was also present when Samus made a cameo in the game. Link’s cameo in the game appears before Princess Peach joins the party, however they are still technically in the same game so I feel it’s still worth mentioning. Princess Peach similarly to Mario appears in the crowd for both the Megaton Punch minigame and Kirby’s Battle in the Boxing arena with King Dedede in Kirby Super Star and the remake Super Star Ultra. Princess Peach is a racer in Mario Kart 8, where there was a Mii costume for Captain Falcon, along with the Blue Falcon as a kart and two F-Zero tracks. In Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, there is also Link in both his Skyward Sword and Breath of the Wild incarnations as well as both default Inklings, two human Animal Crossing Villagers and Isabelle who are playable. Princess Peach is a character in the Game & Watch Gallery games and as such has crossed over with Mr. Game & Watch. In the NES version of Tetris, Pit appeared playing a harp alongside characters such as Princess Peach, Samus, Link and Donkey Kong.  Princess Peach is a character in the Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games series therefore crossing over with Sonic. Pac-Man has crossed over with Princess Peach in the arcade Mario Kart GP series. Whilst Princess Peach has never directly crossed over with any of the Hero characters from Dragon Quest, many of the Fortune Street games have featured crossovers with the Dragon Quest and Mario series, with many other Dragon Quest characters interacting with her. Finally, and perhaps most notably is a game where Princess Peach has a direct cameo and Mario doesn’t. (There is however a character based on him) In all versions of Link’s Awakening a character named Catherine sends a photo of ‘herself’ to Mr. Write (a character who is a clear reference to Dr. Wright from the SNES SimCity game who is also an assist trophy in Super Smash Bros) with him showing Link the photo which is a picture of Princess Peach. In reality, Catherine is a goat living in Animal Village. Whilst normally I tend to not include pictures or outfits in other games as cameos (Peach’s dress and parasol appear in many other series such as Animal Crossing for example) I felt in this case it was justified as the photo is part of the actual sidequest regarding the character’s identity rather than just being a background cameo.

Why this game?
Princess Peach has been playable in a few games so I had quite a few to choose from, Super Mario 3D World was one contender with Peach playing somewhat similarly to how she does in Super Smash Bros, however she lacked something specific in this game that I went for with my final choice. The other two notable options, Super Paper Mario and Super Princess Peach which was her starring role both had her play in a somewhat more unique way to how she did in Super Smash Bros, with Perry the Parasol being a big part of her moveset in SPP, whilst in SPM Peach only had her Parasol lacking her floating jump. Super Mario Bros 2 was the first time Princess Peach was playable, and most of her moveset in Super Smash Bros originates from the game, with not only her being able to float for a short time when she jumps, but perhaps the most unique aspect from the game being her ability to pull out turnips to throw as weapons, something she only does in SMB2. It was for these reasons I decided to go with Super Mario Bros 2 in this case, especially as those other games will still be covered later down the line on my list. When it comes to the version of the game I chose, I went for the Super Mario Advance incarnation rather than the original NES or Allstars version, however I will detail that more in the next section overall.

My past with this game.
So this game is one of the select few specifically from my childhood. I had Super Mario Allstars on the SNES with this game on it, but also I had the NES version as well. With the NES version the main thing I remember is just having the box with the picture of Mario on the front. Similarly to other games then I never completed this one, however it was probably the Mario game I got the least far playing. I believe I would only ever get to 1-3 before usually not making it past the Phantos to face Mouser. For some time I mostly remembered the game but didn’t really revisit it, it wasn’t exactly in the same class as Super Mario Bros 3 or Super Mario World even if I did have some fond memories of it for being so different. Probably the most confusing thing with the game for me back then was related to the cartoon show. In the cartoon show, Bowser is depicted looking different to the games, with him being mostly green with a crown on his head as opposed to his look in the vast majority of other appearances with orange scales on his body and only his head green as well as lacking a crown. Wart, the antagonist of Super Mario Bros 2 however, was all green with a crown on his head. Due to this, I believed that the King Koopa on the cartoon show was actually Wart (which might not be that outlandish as the first version of the cartoon show was based on Super Mario Bros 2, so it was likely King Koopa was just an amalgamation of Bowser and Wart, although this is DIC so the possibility of them just screwing it up is always the most likely scenario) Another perhaps somewhat unique source of this was my Grandma when I’d visit her as a kid, who would have various games I could play with my Cousins, and one she had was a card game called Super Mario Bros Blockbusting Card Game. Of course, being a big fan of Mario then I would love getting this out, especially as the big cards had artwork of the various enemies, powerups and the Mario Bros. What was interesting was this also had artwork of Wart as well as Bowser, which therefore for me back then looked even more similar, so I just assumed Wart was the King Koopa from the cartoons and Bowser was from the games. What helped with this was there were a fair few of the bosses from Super Mario Bros 2 who were cards in the set.
It was only with magazines I believe that I gradually learnt that Wart was the antagonist of Super Mario Bros 2, and at first I believed this meant he was the villain from the cartoon show till I finally realised the cartoon show wasn’t really relevant to the games at all and King Koopa was meant to be Bowser. I also at this time learnt probably the other most notable aspect of this game, that it wasn’t the original Super Mario Bros 2. Despite having Super Mario Allstars, back then I didn’t exactly look at the Lost Levels as anything else other than a weird version of Super Mario Bros I couldn’t get anywhere on, and it was only later I learnt that that was the game in Japan that was SMB2 and the SMB2 I knew had been another game altogether, Doki Doki Panic. What’s interesting is I believe apparently Miyamoto was more involved in Doki Doki Panic than SMB2 (Lost Levels) overall, so it’s not as if the game becoming a Mario one was completely out of nowhere. It’s also very interesting that so many factors of this game, things like Peach’s movement, Luigi’s distinct character design, Toad being playable and perhaps the biggest one being various enemies such as Bob-ombs and Shy Guys became a huge part of the Super Mario Bros series, with Bob-ombs appearing in the following game SMB3 (Which meant in Japan these enemies somehow went from being in Doki Doki Panic to Super Mario Bros 3.) The reason for this apparently was that they believed the original SMB2 (Lost Levels) was too difficult really to sell outside of Japan, something that tends to be mocked now, but personally I think it makes for a more interesting and unique sequel so I’m kind of glad it happened. It’s also interesting to me that due to this, outside of Japan Super Mario Bros fits a slight pattern I noticed with a couple of franchises on NES, where the second game in the series would be quite different to the first, then the third would end up being more like the first game again but expanded. The Legend of Zelda had Zelda II Adventure of Link which had sidescrolling as a major gameplay element before A Link to the Past brought the series back to how it was in the original game, Castlevania 2 Simon’s Quest was a lot different to the first game, but Castlevania 3 Dracula’s Curse brought it back to the gameplay of the first game, and with SMB2 it was radically different to SMB, but then SMB3 brought it back to the style of the first game.
Another big part of my history with the game, as with a fair few franchises, goes back to my experiences on the early internet, specifically Newgrounds flash animations again. Back then, there was a flash animation at the time called Rise of the Mushroom Kingdom which I really enjoyed. It was bloody and involved Mario dying and Luigi setting out for revenge, fairly tame compared to a lot of stuff on Newgrounds then and with some really nice usage of sprites. It was the second flash movie in this series however that involved Mario setting off to face the real villain behind the events of the first movie (which turned out to have been a dream) Wart that really made me appreciate SMB2 more. At the time I was really getting into messing around with sprites and Games Factory, trying to make my own games, so this flash movie made me look a lot more into SMB2 and all the unique enemies in it, with the various bosses such as Mouser, Tryclyde and of course Birdo and Wart being characters I wanted to see more of. This all led me to finally properly play SMB2 and beat it some time after I had beaten SMB3.
For my final history with the game, it relates mostly to Super Mario Advance, the remake of Super Mario Bros 2 that launched the Game Boy Advance. It was traditional at that point to launch a new Nintendo console with a Mario game, a pattern that would be broken only a few months later with the release of the Gamecube (which instead had Luigi’s Mansion, and the Wii wouldn’t have a Mario series game at all at launch.) This game was the first in the Super Mario Advance series and it’s arguably the version that was changed the most from the original game, with a few changes to the levels such as new giant Shy Guys and a fair bit more voice acting with all the bosses getting lines they’d say when you met them. This is pure speculation I’ve had since then, but I feel like they possibly picked Super Mario Bros 2 as they felt it was the game that they could risk changing most, and also that they changed it the most of the series so as to show off what the GBA was capable of with the voices and sprites. I remember when the GBA was the current console, Super Mario Advance was the game I’d tend to see most often being shown off in stores, even sometime after other games had come out. Despite this, it was probably the last game in the Advance series I got, but I’d say out of the Mario Advance series it’s the game I’d most recommend instead of or alongside the original or Allstars version as it’s the more unique experience. It’s due to this that I chose Super Mario Advance as the version for my playthrough rather than the others.

My Smash Playthrough.
I have actually played through this game fairly recently from start to finish, for a character much further down my list so the game is somewhat fresh in my memory compared to other games I’ve written about so far here. For this playthrough as it was the game I chose for Princess Peach I played through the whole game solely as her. In comparison I’d say she’s one of the characters who I prefer playing as due mostly to her extremely useful floating ability, with her downside (being her power which means she’s unable to pull vegetables or pick up enemies as quickly and a slower running speed) not really feeling too much of a hassle in exchange. I want to focus on Peach mostly, but Mario as always is the all-rounder having no real weaknesses nor gimmicks that make him excel in any area, Luigi has the best jump but is a little slower and less powerful than Mario (this is also the game where he first had his scuttle jump) and finally Toad (the character I played through the game as recently) is the fastest and most powerful but has the lowest jump, often requiring you to charge up a super jump (done by crouching down until the character starts glowing) to reach higher platforms. The plot of the game is that Mario had a dream one night where he went up a staircase and found a mysterious door. Opening the door he saw a vast world before him and heard a voice telling him this land was Subcon and that the evil Wart is causing suffering there. The voice tells Mario that only he can save the land and to remember Wart hates vegetables before Mario wakes up. The next day, Mario, Luigi, Toad and Princess Peach go for a picnic, Mario tells them of the dream he had and they all say they had the same dream. During their picnic they see a cave and look inside it, finding a staircase leading up to the same door from the dream. When they open it, they are once again standing before Subcon, with them this time entering which is where the game starts.
Probably the most immediate point for most Mario players to notice when first playing this game is how it is very different when it comes to a lot of the standard Mario mechanics, granted when the game came out this was following only the original Super Mario Bros, so it wasn’t quite as unusual. Some aspects remain the same, such as the characters turning small when they have only one hit left, however unlike in other Mario games their health is restored by finding hearts, with any amount of hearts over one bringing them back to regular size. Mushrooms are in the game still, but this time finding one and picking it up gives the character an extra heart (as well as fully healing them) which means they’re a lot less common than in other Mario games. This game also lacks any sort of power-ups such as the Fire Flower, with the only alternate form being brief invincibility when touching a Star. I quite enjoy the main mechanic used to fight in this game, being picking up objects or enemies and throwing them at other enemies to defeat them, it provides a fun and fairly unique style of gameplay to the other games in the series and creates fairly basic puzzles in some cases where you’re required to build a small tower of mushroom blocks as an example to be able to reach a high platform. Possibly one of the most infamous aspects of this game are the keys that are sometimes required in stages to get through a locked door. You are required to carry the keys similarly to other objects to the door, however when holding the key, the evil Phanto Masks will relentlessly pursue you, and only stop either when you use the key on the door or drop the key. Despite their reputation and giving me some trouble as a kid, nowadays I barely find them a problem as just throwing the key ahead of you usually gets them off your back long enough to travel a fair distance before they pursue you again.
When it comes to difficulties I faced playing the game, it’s a fairly easy game, with only two sections I remember really causing me many problems both recently and back during this playthrough. The first is a stage where you’re travelling across the tops of whales in the ocean. The top of them is a fairly big platform, although the middle of the platform will sometimes have water spout out of their blowhole. Touching this water from the side will hurt you which can be somewhat annoying, however jumping on top of the water that’s spurting out provides a platform. Perhaps the most irritating part to me is when you’re required to use the whales tails as platforms, mostly as they are very small and it can be very easy to slip off of them, leading to an instant death. The second and probably most irritating situation in the game for me are parts featuring you digging through sand. In these parts of the level there are layers of sand that you can dig by pulling them similarly to how you pull vegetables out of the ground. The problem with these parts are the Shy Guys who constantly walk from left to right, and will fall down the layers of Sand you’ve removed. Due to how little room you have to manoeuvre when you get lower in the sand, picking the Shy Guys up and throwing them doesn’t really work, often with them catching on a layer above and instantly walking back into you taking off health. The way I describe this sounds like it’s a design issue but it’s more just hard to describe and really makes sense when playing, it’s not unfair or anything, it’s just these sections are the ones I tend to die most at and find the most tedious, possibly simply due to impatience when it comes down to it.
The stages aren’t really ground-breaking, but when compared to the stages in the original Super Mario Bros I feel they have a fair bit more variety. The themes for them are grassland, vertical waterfall stages, desert stages, underground caves and snow stages, with some of them simply being at night. I still find the stages do some interesting things however with them not seeming just like variations of each other but often having a few unique features to them that makes them stand out, for example the very first stage is a fairly basic grassland, but the end of it has you going into a cave to reach the top of some hills, then climbing into the clouds before facing the boss. The levels are longer than those in the original Super Mario Bros, however there are less of them, with each world only having 3 stages, and the last world, World 7 only having two. The game is somewhat challenging, it was probably the one I got the least far in of the Super Mario Bros games as a kid, but despite a couple of issues I find it fairly simple to play through now, especially with Peach.
The Bosses are probably the more interesting of the first three Super Mario Bros games with there being quite a few variations, although some are repeated a few times. This game was the debut of Birdo who appears in a few variations. The most basic battle with Pink Birdo has her shoot eggs from her mouth at you, which you have to grab from the air and throw back at her. Red Birdo shoots eggs also, but varies it with some fireballs, so you have to be careful which projectile you jump onto and which you just avoid. Green Birdo is the final variation shooting only fireballs, requiring you to grab other objects from around the room to throw instead of eggs to beat her. There is a fourth sort of variation exclusive to Super Mario Advance, being the Robo Birdo. This boss fires eggs also like Birdo, however the eggs are giant and it also has a charging attack which requires you to grab one of the chains hanging from the ceiling to avoid. Birdos are usually the bosses of the regular stages in Super Mario Bros 2, with the third stage of each world having a unique boss to fight, Robo Birdo being one of these unique bosses who replaces a repeated boss in the original versions of the game. There are a couple of unique appearances of Birdo in the game however which I find neat personally, one of which is a Pink Birdo who appears at the very start of stage 4-3. This Birdo will always respawn when defeated when you leave the area through a door and return again. The reason why is that the eggs she fires are actually meant to be used to ride across a large chasm to reach the rest of the level, which is probably one of my favourite little gimmicks in the game.
Mouser is the first main boss in the game, a Mouse with sunglasses who likes to throw bombs everywhere, naturally the way to beat him is to throw his bombs back at him. I remember finding this boss a little annoying mostly as he’s on a platform above you, and only gets effected by the bomb if it goes off where he’s standing. Due to his erratic movements this can be down to luck somewhat as to whether he’ll stand in the right spot when the bomb explodes, although it’s hardly a difficult battle overall. What’s probably most interesting to me about Mouser is that he is probably the boss who varies the most between versions of the game. In the original form of the game, Doki Doki Panic he appeared as a boss three times, with a green eared version in stage 3-3 and a white furred version in 5-3. Super Mario Bros 2 replaced the version in 5-3 with another boss, and then Super Mario Advance replaced the green eared version with Robo Birdo, but actually had a second boss battle with the regular Mouser replace a second boss battle with another character. Tryclyde is the next boss faced all versions of the game, being a three headed snake that shoots fireballs and has to have mushroom blocks thrown at it. Interestingly Tryclyde appears again as a boss in SMB2 but in Super Mario Advance it’s replaced in it’s second battle by Mouser. Another odd factor with Tryclyde is in Super Mario Bros 2 it is red, but in the remake for Mario All-Stars and Super Mario Advance it is instead green with red patterns on it’s back. It’s particularly odd in this case as some enemies, Cobrats who are single headed snakes that appear in the game remain red in all versions. Tryclyde is more of a challenging boss than Mouser and caused me perhaps a death or two but wasn’t that tough overall. The next boss is probably the one I had the most trouble with, Fryguy a living flame. Due to being a flame, touching Fry Guy at all causes damage, so you have to throw mushroom blocks at him. What makes this battle more difficult is that Fryguy moves around a fair bit, and hitting him with the mushroom blocks due to this without being hit yourself can be a lot more tricky. On top of this, when you beat the first phase of the boss fight, Fryguy then splits into four smaller versions that can be just as tricky to hit and all need to be extinguished in order to beat him. Fryguy is probably second only to Wart when it comes to how often I’d die to him, and I think in this playthrough actually killed me more than Wart did. Clawgrip the crab is the final of the standard bosses in the game, throwing boulders at you which have to be picked up and thrown back at him. I remember this battle being a little tricky as landing on the boulders properly could be tough, and approaching from the side at all would cause you damage, but overall he was less tough than Fryguy to me. Clawgrip replaced the white Mouser and was the only boss who wasn’t in Doki Doki Panic (besides Robo Birdo.) Every boss is voiced in this version of the game and I find them fun little voicelines overall that make them more memorable, with lines like Mouser going “Here, have some bombs!” or Birdo’s “This is as far as you go!”
The final two levels are the most difficult overall, not being as irritating to me as the digging through sand or whale sections earlier in the game, but more difficult stages overall than the others, with the first having you travelling across clouds with a lot of enemies and pits to overcome and the second being a big palace which is probably the biggest maze in the game. They are both however, probably my favourite levels in the game overall. I tend to have an affinity for cloud based sky stages and I find the palace a fitting final location. Wart is the final boss of the game and is fought in a room with the Dream Machine which he has been using possibly to create the various monsters that make up his army of bad dreams. The Dream Machine seems to perhaps possess some sort of sentience however, as in the final battle it starts shooting out vegetables which can be grabbed and thrown into Wart’s mouth to defeat him. Wart fights by shooting out bubbles and it is only when he opens his mouth to do so he can be hurt by throwing a vegetable in there, which was why at the start of the game Mario was told about Wart hating them as a hint. I remember having some trouble years ago with timing the vegetables so as to not get hit by the bubbles, but this time it went fairly smoothly and I beat Wart I think first time. With Wart defeated you go through to the next room and free the native inhabitants of Subcon from a jar, who celebrate Mario, Luigi, Toad and Peach defeating Wart and saving them before seeming to throw the defeated Wart out of the Palace. With this, the scene then switches to Mario in bed, revealing the whole game was a dream as cast credits for all of the enemies in the game go by, which in the original version of the game had a couple of mistakes such as Ostro, a minor enemy and Birdo’s names being swapped, which is corrected in this version. It’s a nice ending and for those who overanalyse these games like me, somewhat interesting as a few of the enemies who first appeared in this game such as Shy Guys and Snifits actually also appeared in Yoshi’s Island when Mario was a baby, so as this is part of a dream those memories might be related to them appearing in Wart’s army of bad dreams, although I know it’s probably nothing that deep overall. So overall, I enjoyed playing through this game, it’s not overly long or difficult and as a portable game back when it came out and the first example of what the GBA could do, it was very good overall I’d say.
Specific aspects about the game relating to Peach in Smash.
I’ve pretty much gone over the main aspects of Princess Peach in this game when it comes to Super Smash Bros, this game was the origin of Peach’s floating jump ability and her pulling turnips out of the ground to throw at enemies. In Super Smash Bros, very rarely Peach can pull other items out of the ground instead of a turnip, one of which being a Bob-omb, which is possible also in Super Mario Bros 2 where some of the tufts of grass when pulled will turn out to be a Bob-omb which has to be thrown away immediately or else it will explode on you. Other than this however, most of Peach’s other moves come from other games I will cover later, such as her frying pan being from Super Mario RPG, Tennis Racket and Golf Club from their respective sports series and Parasol from various other games. There’s nothing really to customise so that’s pretty much it for Peach’s appearance in this game.

"With my dad laid up, we need all the help we can get. We’re practicing today if either of you want to join in on the festivities," Brandon persuades the two of you as you round the corner of the Peach Pit to sit at your usual booth. The familiar scent of pie crust and burgers fills the air, instantly putting your soul at ease.
"Thanks… but no thanks, slim," Dylan rejects him, sliding into the seat opposite of you while Brandon follows suit.
"Dylan, I thought you were a total baseball freak!" You tell him.
"I am, but listening to these parents berate their kids from the sidelines all day long," he shakes his head, cringing, "Brings back a whole slew of bad memories."
"But it shouldn't be about the parents!" Brandon protests, "It should be about being on a team, learning fundamentals, having a good time!"
"That's very noble, Brandon. But when I was playing? It was about winning at any cost necessary.” Dylan argues. Brandon sighs in defeat, looking to you.
"What about you, Y/N/N?"
"Not a chance,” you laugh.
"What? Why not?"
"Brandon… me and 20 kids, in an extremely competitive state? Did you learn nothing from the summer of '85?" You jest. Brandon chuckles at your extreme rejection, sliding a laminated menu your way.
"Wait… what happened in '85?" Dylan's eyes flicker cluelessly between the two of you, awaiting an explanation.
"Look, it was no big deal. Things got a little heated during one of Eric's little league games," you shrug dismissively, flipping through the Peach Pit's menu as if you didn't get the same thing every time.
"She beat up a nine-year-old,” Brandon quips.
“I didn’t beat up a—“ you pause, taking in a breath. “To put it simply I… put a kid back in his rightful place. He was picking on my brother, nothing happened that he didn't deserve."
“What’d you do, tackle him out on the field?” Dylan lifts his eyebrows, amused smile on his face.
“No, of course not!” You duck your head back into your menu, mumbling, “I went out there and hit him in the groin with his bat.”
-
The kids run out into the field, taking their positions with their needed equipment in hand. You lean back onto the warm metal fence, slipping a pair of sunglasses over your eyes to get a better look at Nat’s team. Without the glaring sun in your eyes.
“This is pathetic!” A young boy, adorned in a bright yellow Dukes uniform comes hurdling out from behind the fence to join Brandon and Steve. “They’re not even wearing uniforms!”
“So what?” Brandon shrugs, voice hardened, “It’s a practice game.” Steve leans into Brandon to whisper something to him, but since he lacks the levels of common decency that most people acquire by the age of five, he talks loud enough for the whole team to hear.
“They don’t look so good, Brandon.”
“It’s okay. They came to play, that’s the important thing.” Man… sometimes Brandon felt too good to be true. You’re convinced there has to be a catch at this point. Gorgeous, smart, great with kids. What’s next? He opens up an animal sanctuary for underprivileged strays? Buys a soup kitchen? “Listen up, you guys. The way you treat your competition is a direct comment on how you play the game. Good sportsmanship counts big time with me and my old man…” as he continues to ramble on, your thoughts begin to shift elsewhere. Like how good he looks. It’s purely criminal for anyone to look so hot in yellow. It’s an inherently unattractive color. Yet, there he is—coaching children in the blazing heat, instilling them with good sportsmanship, and all you want to do is to get him to yourself. That bastard. You shake it off, chalking it up to teenage hormones, and try to focus on the game.
“Hey doofus! You really eat toads!” The same kid whining about uniforms earlier is now directing all of his pent up privilege and ten-year-old angst towards the poor, sweet, small child from Nat's team, the Pitts, further solidifying your desire to never procreate.
“You’ll throw it better next time, Manny!” Nat encourages the little boy wholeheartedly, clapping for him as loudly as he can.
“Hey Corey! Throw it to the doofus, he’s a real toad!” Does this kid only know two insults? The smaller brunette, the less athletically gifted child hangs his head, kicking sand around the base plate in frustration. Brandon takes note of it, immediately bounding out into the middle of the game.
“Time out! Crawford, get in the game for Noah!” His voice is stern, and as he approaches the boy he’s in total coach mode. It’s kinda hot... Well, it’s not your fault baseball’s boring. Gotta keep yourself entertained somehow.
Steve stops Randy Crawford from going out from the fence with the back of his hand, and going after Brandon himself, sand slipping from under his shoes. You can’t hear what they're saying but you know it’s not the happiest conversation. Knowing them, you know exactly how this is playing out. You don’t even need to hear them. You can see Steve furrow his brows from the sidelines, and Brandon’s gesticulating with his hands wildly as they talk but can’t make out any words that are flying from their mouths. Brandon, the moral center of Los Angeles wants Noah out for being a little jerk. Steve, being Steve, would probably rather keep the better player in than save the self esteem of a little boy before it’s too late and it no longer exists. It’s not long until Brandon pats Steve hard on the shoulder, storming off the field in a blur of sand and sweat.
Well, that’s your cue to leave, isn't it? You go to follow Brandon out, but Steve stops you short.
“That boyfriend of yours is a total Boy Scout,” he spits.
“Well, someone’s gotta be," You scoff, eyes rolling, ”They’re just kids, Steve! This isn’t Major League Baseball. There’s no trophy, there’s no prize. There’s absolutely nothing at stake here. What they need to be doing is having fun, and while that snot-nosed little jerk is out there on the field, they’re all gonna be miserable.”
-
You flop down onto Dylan's couch, feet up on the armrest as he grabs a soda from the fridge and parks himself on the ottoman beside you. You exhale, eyes fluttering shut for a moment.
"Rough day out with the little leaguers?"
"Rough day out with Steve," you snort. “I’m so used to being around Brandon I forget that people like Steve Sanders even exist.”
“Come on, Steve isn't that bad."
"Dylan, you're talking about the guy that got carjacked by a girl he was trying to hook up with, and still bailed her out of jail--despite the fact she robbed him justminutes before--in the hopes of getting laid, only for her to steal his wallet." Dylan's face screws in a mix of amusement and total disbelief.
"Okay, so he's that bad," Dylan laughs. "Sorry to break it to you, Y/N/N, but not everyone is a part of the illustrious Walsh family."
"Not everyone can be," you tease. He gently tosses you a throw pillow from the chair across the room, and you use it to prop up your head. "It’s a tragedy.”
-
“See, what did I tell you? Isn’t he sweet? Isn’t he great?” Brenda watches as you comb through the stray dog’s long gray fur. He really is cute… wet black nose, shaggy gray hair, big puppy dog eyes. But you can’t keep him. “I think he likes you!”
“Bren, as much as I’d love to take this puppy home, my parents would kill me!"
“Just take him for a trial run, and if you like him, keep him!”
“Bren—“
“Please?”
“Bren—“
“Come on!” She pleads.
“Fine! Okay, okay. I’ll see if we can take him in tomorrow night,” you concede, giving the dog one last pat on the head. Brenda squeals happily, a grin on her face as she wraps her arms around you.
-
“He’s great! You’ll love him!”
"Fine. See you later... Wally."
The four of you watch silently, perched up at the counter of the Peach Pit as Nat's baseball team chows down on slices of pepperoni pizza. We've got Nat to your far left, wondering how the hell they're going to survive against the team from Beverly Hills, then we've got Dylan to your left debating on whether to finally help Nat and shack up with the struggling team, Brandon to your right who hasn't lifted his hand from your upper thigh this whole time which is seriously distracting, and you, wondering how such little boys could devour so much pizza in so little time.
"You know the improvement from one week to the next is remarkable." You mumble.
"Oh yeah… the kids are showing a lot of promise." Brandon nods absentmindedly, bringing his cup to his lips.
"But…" Dylan begins, "you still need a pitcher that can put the ball over the plate."
"Yeah," Nat sighs, "but win or lose, the most important thing is how good the kids feel about themselves." He's trying to convince you, but the more he talks the more you know he's trying to convince himself.
"Absolutely." You agree.
"Totally." Brandon nods.
"Yeah, I mean, in the long run that's all that counts," Dylan shrugs, his voice coated with scepticism.
"Absolutely." Brandon concurs.
"Totally…” You say. “Y’know, I was talking to Andrea about this and she knows a pretty great player from the valley."
They all turn their heads, slowly, with Nat glancing from you to the phone. You roll your eyes at the boys, making your way over to the payphone. The group watches with bated breath behind you as you slip in the quarters and dial her number, waiting for her to pick up.
"Hello?"
"Andrea, hi! Listen, uh, do you remember the other day? You told me you knew some kid in the valley who was a major blue-chip little leaguer?"
"Oh, yeah! Avery?"
"Yeah… Avery." You twist your head back, giving them a smile and a thumbs up.
-
"What's Dylan doing? Bringing in a ringer?" Steve scoffs, twisting the metal bat in his hand as he cleans it. You exchange knowing smirks with Brandon as Dylan helps Avery get ready on the sidelines. She takes off her ball cap, releasing the foot of long brunette pony-tailed hair. Gasps are heard from center field, seemingly originating from Noah. Shocker.
"Oh my god! Dude, it's a girl!" He laughs out, adjusting his cap against the wind.
"Poor Dylan, he's really scraping the bottom of the barrel, huh?" Oh, if only you and that misogynistic head of yours knew, Steve-O. And surprise, surprise—Every pitch she's involved in ends up in a home run for the Pitts.
And little by little, much to your joy, Steve is getting progressively more aggravated— tapping feet, flaring nostrils, bugged-out eyes. You’re beginning to like baseball.
Eventually you make your way over to Brenda, off by the sidelines. You watch as they send Davey from the Dukes out, and Manny, the small, athletically challenged boy from the Pitts, isn’t far behind. Brandon perks up, calling a timeout to give what you can only assume is another one of his infamous Brandon talks to his team. After a moment the team breaks up, moving into their correct positions and as Manny chokes up on his bat ready to pitch. You cringe, hiding your face in your hand.
But it's nothing short of a miracle as Davey throws the ball. It makes contact with Manny's bat, soaring across the field as he jets off across the bases. The catcher from the Dukes runs for the ball, tripping over his own foot and skidding across the grass. The whole team erupts into ecstatic cheers, rushing out and lifting Manny onto their shoulders. You know that Davey blew the pitch for him, you’ve seen him pitch a hundred times. But seeing the joy on that little boy's face, you knew that it didn't matter.
"Poor kid," Brenda sighs, looking out to the opposite direction to Randy Crawford, the catcher that landed face-first into the grass. "I mean, he really gave it his best-- Wally!"
"Wally? Bren, what're you-- oh my god! That is Wally!" Off in the distance, you can see the gray ball of hair hurdling towards the baseball diamond.
"That's not Wally! That's Rupert! It's my dog, he's back!" Randy gasps, watching in amazement as his shaggy mutt runs across the crowds and into his open arms.
"Hey uh," Brandon comes to greet you, but is looking out into the field as well, "isn't that supposed to be your dog, Y/N/N?"
"No, Brandon," Brenda shakes her head, light smile lacing her lips. "I guess that's Randy's dog…" You sigh, but seeing the little boy giggle with glee as Wally-- er, Rupert, laps at his cheek, there's no troubling emotions to be found.
"I'm sorry, Y/N/N," Brandon laces his fingers with yours, grabbing your attention with a soft kiss to your temple.
"I'm not," you assure him. You smile, the sight of the boy reuniting with his long lost dog something straight out of a movie scene. One last look and you turn away from the boy, eyes meeting your boyfriend’s. “Hey, Brandon... have a date for that dance yet?”

Can you think of three images that are recurring elements in your writing? Are they symbolic of something? What do these images mean to you? Do you have any memories/connotations tied to them?
Hmm, I think this will wind up being less “images,” and more about common themes that pop up in my writing.  Because I don’t think I repeat specific images all that often.
1. Friendship.  A lot of my favorite characters are minor bad guys, not so much on the genocidal world-ending scale, more on the bank-robbing (and occasional murder) scale.  They also tend to be part of groups and teams, like the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants and the Flash Rogues.  Basically, I like watching these characters interact and get along and be nice to each other.  That doesn’t mean that everything is peaches and cream, and that they never fight.  In fact, I imagine them fighting quite frequently.  But I like seeing these characters pal around, fight and make-up (and maybe come to understand each other better), and generally have each other’s backs, like a found family.  it’s a side we don’t see as often in the comics.  A couple of my favorite ships, namely Trickster (James Jesse)/Pied Piper and Pyro (St. John Allerdyce)/Avalanche are romances that grow out of friendships.  And it’s honestly not even about just wanting to see them bang (in fact, I haven’t written any explicit sex fic for either of those ships, although some day I might), it’s about wanting them to have this strong sense of closeness and love for each other.  Which of course, you could still have platonically, and I can enjoy “friendship fics” about my favorite ships just as well.  I think maybe I ship some of these pairings because I want them to be the most important thing in each other’s lives, without a different romantic partner gumming up the works.  Or maybe because that’s a kind of romance that I find ideal - this very close friendship easily transitioning into romantic love rather than “these two people are physically attracted to each other, and spend the next several seasons being stupid and angsty about it.”  I like the Ben Wyatt/Leslie Knope type romance - “I like you and I love you.”
2. Detailed back stories - A lot of my favorites are also fairly minor characters, and as such, aren’t always super-well developed (especially depending on who is writing them).  And I tend to put a lot of details into my stories, even when I don’t intend to.  I can’t just have Hartley find James in his apartment in the morning, I have to say what kind of cereal they are eating and what they are watching on TV.  I have so many useless head-canons about Blob and Toad playing Animal Crossing, and Pyro watching Australian soap operas and Avalanche trying to breed orchids in his spare time.  Do you want to know Pyro’s opinion on Vegemite?  Well, too bad, I’m gonna tell you anyway.  I also like making reference back to older stories in the comics (unless I completely disagree with the portrayal, in which  case I just blithely ignore canon.)
3. Characters disagreeing without either being entirely wrong.  This is kind of a new thing, since I’ve been exchanging a lot of RP asks with @sebastianshaw, which is mostly my version of Pyro interacting with her version of Sebastian Shaw.  And they hate each other.  They clash in almost every little ficlet I write.  But Sebastian Shaw is not just a strawman for wrong opinions, he’s an interesting and complex character (especially the way @sebastianshaw writes him), who is ruthless and callous, but also intelligent and competent.  Shaw is cruelly observant, and his opinions about Pyro, although overly dismissive and condescending, are not entirely wrong.  Pyro can be needlessly argumentative and hostile (he generally finds something nasty to say to Shaw in every interaction), but he also often has a point.  I don’t know why I enjoy writing this.  Maybe because it often doesn’t sit right with me when one character gets portrayed as a complete unreasonable monster, even though we actually need a few unreasonable monsters to be good villains in the comics.  Or maybe because I tend to be non-confrontational and dislike arguing in real life.  So I get my cathartic release writing as a loud-mouthed, opinionated Australian pyrokinetic who disagrees with everything Shaw says.
Extra bonus theme: Dumb, goofy characters being more competent than portrayed, but still being dumb and goofy.  One of my pet peeves in comics is characters like Trickster (who is an engineering genius) and Pyro (canonically a former journalist and author) being portrayed as complete idiots.  I like to show them (and others like Blob and Toad, who also don’t get much respect) being intelligent and thoughtful.  But then I also like to show them being hilarious dumb-asses because it’s more fun that way.  Like I’d actually enjoy Marauders Pyro if he was given a few moments of intelligence and sophistication to go along with his stupid face tattoo and new penchant for biting people.  It’s a fine line!
Extra extra bonus theme: Everyone is gay.  I think I head-cannon a lot of my favorite characters as some form of LGBT (or I’m open to imagining them that way, if I don’t directly head-canon it.)  There are a few faves that I still imagine as straight, but not that many.  Maybe because we still don’t get a huge amount of canon LGBT content, so it’s a matter of wanting what I can’t have?  Maybe I just want the widest possibility of ships?  Maybe I just want to imagine two guys banging - although again, I don’t actually write a lot of pure sex fic, and I do the same for female favorite characters.  And I do this even for characters that I don’t have specific favorite ships for, like the Riddler or Loki or Rachel Summers.

Mini Fanfic #497: (Trying to) Stay Home Today (SSBU)
Dark Pit: (Sighs Relaxingly While Laying Down on the Living Room's Sofa) Finally....I have the entire day in this mansion to myself. Just me, myself, the TV in front of me, but mostly importantly, I don't have to deal with anymore bullshit to-
'Doorbell Rang'
Dark Pit: ('Sigh') Not even a minute later and I already spoken too soon....(Got up from the Sofa to Answer the Mansion's Door)
'Door Open'
Dark Pit: What do you want?
A Shy Guy with a Purple Bowtie: Greetings, my good angel man! Allow me to introduce myself, I am-
Dark Pit: Game Guy?
Game Guy: (Impressed) Ahh. I see you're already familiar of who I am, yes?
Dark Pit: (Rolled his Eyes in a Bit of Annoyance) Of course. How I can forget the biggest gambling cheapskate in Mario Party 3?
Game Guy: (Already Sweating Bullets) Y-Yes! Well....('Clears Throat') I know that my role in that game was..... Questionable at best, but rest assured! I've already became a very changed man.
Dark Pit: (Starts Looking at Game Guy a Little More Suspiciously) Right......So do you have any reason of being or-
Game Guy: Why, yes actually! I walked all over the beautiful town of Smash Town today and I couldn't help but notice your huge, gorgeous mansion from a distance. So I decided come by and ask you.....(Pulls out Some Cards From his Pocket) to play a game of cards with yours truly.
Dark Pit: ....................You mean to tell me that you came...all the way here just for a game of cards?
Game Guy: Well, when you put it like that, I-
Dark Pit: Already don't care.
'Door Close'
Dark Pit: (Making Way Back to the Living Room) Alright. With that out of the way, I can finally enjoy the rest the day here by my-
'Doorbell Rang'
Dark Pit: ('Groans a Little in Annoyance')
'Dood Open'
Dark Pit: Look, man, I don't want to play your stupid card- Oh. It's just you guys.
Wario: (Standing Next to Waluigi on the Doorstep) 'Eyyy, Dark Pit! Just the man we somewhat need to see! We need you for something.
Dark Pit: It doesn't involve a game of cards, is it?
Waluigi: What? No! We just need your help for a sec.
Dark Pit: ('Sigh') Okay. Fine. What's the problem?
Wario: We're looking for that lousy Cheapskate Game Guy!
Waluigi: Yeah!! He's a Shy Guy with-
Dark Pit: A purple bowtie? Yeah, I seen him. He came by here not too long for some card game before I shut the door on him.
Wario: ('Sigh a bit Angrily') Yep. That's the cheater alright.....
Waluigi: Knew it....
Dark Pit: What? He asked you two bozos to play cards with him too?
Waluigi: That's right. Wario accepted his challenge and everything.
Wario: He cheated me out of all of my money and gems!!
Dark Pit: (Raised an Eyebrow) You mean the ones you stole?
Wario: Noooo. I found them all fair and square!
Waluigi: (Glares and Growls at Wario) ............
Wario: ('Groans in Defeat') Fine....Me and Waluigi found them fair and square. (Turns to Waluigi) There! Happy?
Waluigi: (Starts Smiling Smugly) ('Heh Heh') Very.
Dark Pit: (Sighs While Beginning to Lose his Patience) Look, if you two really want to find the guy that badly, then why don't you look for him back in town. Couldn't be that hard to find since he had a giant, purple bowtie.
Wario: ('Groans in Defeat') I can't believe I'm saying this, but you're right. Guess we're having ourselves a Shy Guy hunt today.
Waluigi: (Place a Hand on Wario's Shoulder) Look on the bright side, bro. Once we're able to find him and get back all the money and gems he stole....(An Evil Grin Begins to Creep up on his Face) We rob him out of every single thing he has.
Wario: (Starts Grinning Evilly as Well) Say...... That's actually not a bad idea there, bro. If that cheapskate's really all that rich like he said he is, we can be able bet for everything he got and more and cheat our ways to victory. We'll finally live like kings!!
Wario/Waluigi: ('WAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!')
Dark Pit: Yeah. Good luck with that.
'Door Close'
Dark Pit: (Finally Arrives at the Living Room and Sat Down on the Sofa) I swear.... Those two have no idea what they're getting themselves into anymore. ('Sigh') Doesn't matter. At least I can finally sit back and-
???: Well, well, well. If isn't one of Palutena's baby bois
Dark Pit: (Groans in Annoyance once He Immediately Recognized that Voice) Hades.......
Hades: (Gives Dark Pit his Usual Evil Like Smile) At your absolute service! How are you doing on this fine day today?
Dark Pit: I was actually having a good day till you came here....
Hades: Oh come now. There's no need to give me the hostile attitude here. I'm just here to say 'Hello' to an old friend is all.
Dark Pit: (Gives Hades a "Really?" Look) We're not friends, Hades.
Hades: Ah. Yes....Maybe calling you "Friend" isn't the right word....How about I call you my "Edgy Frenemy" instead? That has a nice ring to it, don'tcha think?
Dark Pit: Don't you have anyone else Irritate? Like your whole "League of Villains Club" or whatever?
Hades: 'Fraid not. The gang already has plans for the today. Bowser's spending time with his kids, Ganondorf meeting some lady name Urbosa, Mewtwo hanging out with Zelda and the two Links, Ridley flying off to space for some reason, not entirely sure what Dark Samus is doing right now if I'm being honest....
Dark Pit: Yeah. I don't care. You think you could get out of my sight now?
Hades: (Rolled his Eyes a bit Playfully) Again with the hostile attitude. Sometimes I wonder what I would ever do to deserve this kind of mistreatment....
Dark Pit: Oh gee. I don't know? How about the fact that made me watch THREE, WHOLE, GODDAMN EPISODES OF BOKU NO FUCKING PICO!!!!!
Hades: Ah. I see you still remember that memory very fondly.
Dark Pit: WHAT SO YOU THINK?!!!
Hades: (Chuckles Lightly) What's with all the yelling for? You're still living, aren't you? Or perhaps you want me show you another anime masterpiece-
Dark Pit: (Immediately Got Up From the Sofa) That's it! Where's my staff?!
Hades: Alright. Fiiiiiiiiiine. I'll get out of hair. I can clearly see I'm not welcome here.....Unless I can change your mind with an anime called "Happy Sugar-
Dark Pit: JUST GET THE HELL OUT OF HERE ALREADY BEFORE I SHOOT YOUR SORRY ASS DOWN!!!
Hades: Fine. Fine. I'll leave you alone, Little Pitto. Hades out. (Disappears with a "Pop" Sound)
Dark Pit: (Groans While Slumping Back Down on the Sofa) God, I hate that guy with a passion. (Took a Deep Breath) Doesn't matter. He's gone......Maybe now I can finally enjoy my day here alone. (Laying Down on the Sofa) Starting off with a nap.....
And with that Dark Pit closes his eyes to get some sleep................That I until....
???: PITTO!!
Dark Pit: (Eyes Open and Awake) What the- ACK! (Falls Off of the Sofa) ('Groans') Son of a- Huh? (Looks up to see Ren, Pit, and Futuba Looking Down on Him) What are you nerds doing here?
Ren: (Chuckles Lightly While Helping Dark Pit Back up in his Feet) To get you off of here, of course.
Futuba: (Smiles Brightly) We're all having a Beach Day today!
Dark Pit: (Raised an Eyebrow) Beach day?
Pit: Yeah, man. I tried calling you about and everything, remember?
Flashback.... Earlier This Morning....
Dark Pit slept through all of Pit's calls and voicemails in their room.
End of Flashback
Dark Pit: Huh. So that explain the vibrating.......
Ren: So....Now that you got yourself out of the sofa, how about joining us for some-
Dark Pit: Pass.
Ren: What?
Dark Pit: You heard me. I said I'll pass. I'm in the middle of my "me" time, in case neither of you didn't notice.
Pit: B-But.....(Frowns Sadly) Summer's about to end soon......
Futuba: (Frowns Sadly as Well) Beach Day wouldn't be the same without you......
Dark Pit: I know...... (Lays Back Down on the Sofa) And I couldn't care less either way.
Pit: But broooooo!! Come onnnn!! Don't bail on us now!!!
Futuba: We'll all miss you like crazy if you don't come!! Pleeeeeease!!
Ren: (Gives Dark Pit a "Really?" Look) Dude, come on. You're making your siblings sad here.
Dark Pit: Still don't care.....
Ren: So that's it then? You're actually gonna stay in this mansion for the entire day?
Dark Pit: That's the plan, Joker. And nothing's gonna convince me otherwise.
Futuba: (Slowly Starts Building up a (Cute) Evil Smile) Oh really? Not even....Oh, I don't know, a video of singing Toads?
Dark Pit: (Raised an Eyebrow) Singing what not?
Futuba: Toads. You know. Princess Peach's civilians and whatnot.
Dark Pit: (Sighs While Rolling his Eyes) I know who they are, Futuba. I just don't think their little singing has what it takes to change my mind.
Futuba: (Already Pulling up her Phone) Really? No matter how terrible and off-key their vocal skills really are?
Pit: Ah man. I heard a group of them sing once..... (Shudders a Little) They were all pretty bad alright.....Still cute though.
Dark Pit: (Sweating Smaller, Less Visible Bullets) N-Nope. Still not convinced otherwise!
Ren: (Gives Dark Pit a Teasing Smirk) Last chance, kiddo. Join us on Beach Day or face the wrath of a group of poorly singing Toads. Choice is yours.
Dark Pit: ('Scoffs') Please. You nerds can try scaring me all you want! I ain't gonna leave this sofa in the slightest!
Ren: Okay. Don't say I didn't warn you. Hit it, sis!
Futuba: Gladly! (Plays the Roads Version of Bohemian Rhapsody)
Toads: (Singing) Is this the REAL LIGHT?!! IS IT JUST FANTA-
Dark: (Already Had Enough and Got Up From the Sofa) OKAY! OKAY! FINE! I'll go to the beach with you dorks! Just stop the damn song already!! Please!!
Futuba: (Pause the Song off her Phone with a Satisfied Smile) Glad we had an understanding, bro.
Dark Pit: ('Sighs in Utter Defeat') Whatever. Just tell me when we get to leave.....
Ren: In a few minutes. The rest of the gang are already at a nearby store, getting everything we need for the party later on.
Dark Pit: Party?
Pit: (Smiles Brightly) Yeah! We planned on having this really cool Beach Party once the sun sets.
Futuba: (Smiles Excitedly) We're getting ourselves ice cream cakes and everything!
Dark Pit: (Huh. Beach Day might actually sounds promising for once...) Alright. You nerds finally got my attention. (Makes his Way to the Stairs) I'll get myself ready....(Looks Back and Points at all Three of his Siblings) And you three better not think about leaving me either!
Ren: (Smiles Softly) Relax. We ain't gonna leave you behind in the slight.
Pit: (Smiles Brightly) Ren's right, Pitto. Just take as much time as you need to get ready! B-But not too much time! 'Kay?
Dark Pit: Uh-huh-
Futuba: Wait! Pitto! There's something important I need to tell you!
Dark Pit: What?
Futuba: (Show Dark Pit a Heart Sign with her Hands While Smiling) We love youu!~
Dark Pit: (Blushes a Little Before Turning Away) Yeah. I know.........I......love you guys too....(Walk Up the Stairs to Get Himself Ready for the Day)

Final Thoughts on Paper Mario the Origami King with some major spoilers
Tumblr media
I thought this game overall was incredibly charming and worth your time if you are a fan of the classic games like the original Paper Mario 64 or Thousand Year Door. It was leaps and bounds ahead of Sticker Star, and overall I thought it was better paper Mario game than Color Splash ever hoped to be.
Even though I'm pleased with playing it through it does have some glaring issues. Right out of the gate, this game is being held back by some sort of executive decisions from Nintendo and it shows tremendously especially within the first few hours of the game. I know nothing about the development of the game, but there are defiantly some things that seem either out of place or rushed which is strange.
Practically the first 3-4 hours of the game is nothing but tutorials, which they do need to explain stuff but not this much oh my goodness. They truly took a lot of the challenge out of the game and made it "very, very young kid oriented" and I'm not looking for the most challenging game out there--I usually play most games on easier difficulties so I can enjoy the adventure instead of having to be annoyed with redoing things. Olivia pops up way too much. I liked her character for the most part. Between Huey, and Kersti, Olivia was a very good one. Huey was a little bit more funny, but Olivia had a lot of charm and multiple emotional arcs. I know saying that sounds silly for a Mario game but she does grow as a character showing that she's still worried about whether or not she can really stop her brother. However, she pops up every time something happens. It's too much. I can see something has appeared Olivia. It's okay--but I'm getting off topic that's exactly what Huey did too in Color Splash. I hate to say it but when she leaves your party by being crushed by a boulder it felt like a classic paper mario game then. You had Bobby with you and he would add his own flair as the helper character.
Bobby truly was a great partner, and even if he's only with you for like maybe 2 or so hours I enjoyed having him around. I'm extremely glad they had partners return even if they felt more like story related. I liked having more than just Olivia with me. All of the partners except Professor Toad were really cool. It kinda sucks that Professor Toad is so forgettable because he is the only partner who has an over world ability. I think it would have been cooler if he was like a Monty mole or something instead of just a Toad with a shovel, there's just so many Toads in the game that an archaeologist Toad could have been cool, but I don't really know where they were trying to go with the character. He was like a scaredy-cat kind of character but also made weird like college references like about his thesis. At the very least he had an unique outfit? I don't know I'm reaching for Professor Toad. Why not just have Captain Toad who's an already established character and an explorer? Anyway, I found it kinda weird that no one else had an over world ability, and they could have done some more interesting puzzles if they had given Kamek or Boswer some. I loved having Kamek join and how he talked about being self conscious and lacking self esteem because Bowser never listened to him. Bowser Jr. was cool too, he wasn't as bratty as I thought he'd be. He was written like a tough kid. Both Kamek and Jr. have satisfying reasons for leaving your party. I liked how they put Mario first in order to save the whole kingdom. It made me as the player feel like "these bad guys know that Mario can save them." I know it's silly but again just a nice touch to the story. Of course you get Bowser to join you right at the very end which is just so great. He even talks about his parenting practices. Luigi also have a shockingly hilarious and "key" role to the story. I'm so glad to see these classic characters have great writing behind them, and really show off that these partners are pretty vital to paper Mario. Especially Luigi and Bowser when in the previous two titles had maybe like 8 lines between the two of them. Yes they don't do much in battle, but they are vital to the story. If my paper Mario games have a fun and unique story then that's all I really want.
Bobby was my favorite. If you haven't seen the one big twist involving Bobby, I'd skip this section and pick back up at the next paragraph. Anyway, Bobby sacrifices himself to save Olivia. While you can kinda piece things together and see it coming after a while you don't expect Bobby to just like straight up die. I remember when it happened I was like, "they really did this in a Mario game?". They even have a cute moment later on in Bowser's castle where Olivia thinks she see Bobby again. Overall he was amazing. That whole area of Shogun Studios felt the most reminiscent of classic Paper Mario games. I had a grin on my face pretty much the whole way through.
The one big gripe I had with the partners is other than Bobby any time you wanna go back to Toad Town or other areas they're just like "yeah okay i'm gonna stay here see ya later". Why? Why not let them come with you? The writers don't have to write any additional dialogue and if they did that would have been cool. Why wouldn't Professor TOAD wanna go back to TOAD town? There's an extra area where you can take Bobby at one point to get photos taken with him in Shogun Studios. Why not do that with other characters as a cool little Easter egg? Truly I didn't understand why they couldn't travel with you. I know in that infamous interview floating around with the directors and producers saying they only wanted one partner at a time so it didn't cause any confusion for swapping them out but that's so stupid.
Back to the game being held back--there were times I could see the designers desperately wanted to make a unique character better, or give something else a personality but they weren't allowed to. It hurts a lot when the original paper Mario games could give toads fun little names like  "Zess T." or "Fice T." and now we have "Professor Toad" or "Battle Lab Toad". There are two toads in Toad Town that both say something like "where's Purple Toad?" or "Where's Blue Toad?". Stuff like that takes me out of the enjoyment of the game. It's only when you go and look on the around on other sites that you find out that the Origami Craftsman man is actually Theofold. Yes, we did have captain T. ode, but like. That's just "Toad". Back to that interview from the producers of the game where they say they can't really alter Mario characters anymore like give them age, gender, etc. But come on. I'm not really sure why they can't give the toads proper names. I know that's an extreme nitpick, but that's definitely something that takes me out of the game and reminds me "oh yeah we can't do this anymore". Even Bobby, will constantly remind Olivia to call him "Bob-omb" It just feels like a slap in the face. Bring back Toadsworth? An established character who has been MIA for like years now. Just please. Please make the Toads different they did a very good job here with a handful like, the sea captain, captain T.ode, Professor Toad, and the Shangri-spa Toads. I remember those toads because they were dressed up differently than the other ones. I even remember the Toad who told you where the heart ups were because he was in a completely unique pose then the other ones. Please Nintendo I'm begging you just make them look more unique or don't rely on them as a pillar of a character. They are all the same. Just do more colors of Toads! There's red, blue, yellow, green, and purple.Make an orange Toad or something please. I liked finding the Toads in the different areas and they would unfold from origami, it gave me some korok seed vibes. Do more stuff like that!
Concerning the game's overall story, I liked it, but it could have been so much more. There were multiple key moments where I was like "why wouldn't they have a cut scene for this as like a flashback?". The first one was right at the beginning of the game. They instead of showing you in the actual game like a cut scene, they show a small slideshow of Toads setting up for the Origami festival with Princess Peach on the logo screen which I guess is okay, but I'm not a fan. Personally, I would have liked there to be a sort of storybook intro that the previous games had being like "every 100 years the toads in toad town set up a festival to honor the proud technique of origami" and then cut to Mario and Luigi getting a mail call from Parakarry (like the previous games) and then being like "the festival is today we hope to see you there." and then bam they're driving to the festival. I know that seems kinda dumb but why not show that in your game instead of Luigi being like "can't wait to get there" while he's driving his cart from Mario Kart. It's a little weird to me. The biggest moment like this happened when you first meet the origami craftsman (who yes is just a Toad) he explains these unique origami techniques he used to fold King Olly to make him come to life, but like brushes past it real quick. And then at the very very end (skip ahead if you don't want spoilers) Olly talks about this 1000 crane origami wish thing that was never brought up before by anyone. If he had mentioned it when he dropped the boulder on Olivia that would have been acceptable but it just kinda comes out of nowhere. If you're going to bring these things up then like at least mention them once before or have some type of set up and pay off for it. It just felt kinda rushed. The ending was cute though, and I remember liking Color Splash's ending a bit more but this one was surprisingly beautiful with how it ends with floating lanterns it reminded me a little of Tangled.
The other big thing people are complaining about is no experience. This has pros and cons. pros: the battle in this game a lot of them are scripted or can be ran past no problem. However if you want to buy better weapons or accessories (this game's subtle nod to the badge system) you need a lot of coins. A lot of them. You use the coins in battle to let the Toad audience help you or use coins to buy more time to line up your foes properly. I like this system. While I could have gone for a little more incentive to battle I found myself using my coins even if I had thousands of them. I thought it was a pretty good balance. I don't see why they couldn't have thrown in a little more to make the battles worthwhile though. Why not after ever 10 battles let you pick a stat? Mario's running speed in the over world could be faster, Mario's first strike can be stronger, It doesn't cost as many coins when using them in battle? These are just thoughts I've had if they don't want to use a traditional style stat system. They had max up hearts that raised power and health it's just kinda strange why they don't want to have stats improve or give you another reward for battling other than money.
I will say while backtracking to get missing collectibles I avoided battles outright. If I got into a battle while backtracking I would sigh. I knew there was nothing left for me to spend my coins on so I would try to run from the battle but nine times out of ten I would fail running from the battle. At least the battles go by quickly, but it would use up durability on your consumable weapons. I'm very glad that they brought back permanent weapons and no stickers or cards. This weapon system is a littler underutilized though. I feel like if the designers went in they could have come up with three or four more weapon types. Why not use more Mario related power ups? Why just the fire or ice flowers, tail, and pow block? Why not have a jump move that hits in a 4x4 area like the hammer? They have a hammer item that works like the jump move! Why not have the frog suit back from sticker star or color splash that you can use to dodge unavoidable damage if you don't line up the monsters in time? I loved the battle system a lot more than Sticker Star and Color Splash but it seems like they only scratched the surface of the attacks Mario could do. If you're going to have different weapons that break why not have 10 or 20 unique different weapons as opposed to just more powerful versions of the same 5 weapons? Same with the healing items. Why only mushrooms, when in Toad Town you can get coffee that speeds you up or slows you down? Especially when you find a handful of coffee shops in the game, why can't I buy those coffees there? Why not bring back the cooking in the game from the first two? I know it'll never happen, but near the end of the game you get a spot to cook one item and I really got my hopes up.  I know I'm presenting a lot of questions, but this is all I thought about when doing the battles. If they do an "origami king 2" or something that reuses this battle system I feel like there is a lot of room for improvement and a lot more unique encounters. I also feel like they did this because they didn't want to over complicate things. They wanted the battles to be simple after you did a puzzle section. Also the battles are super snappy. Lasting two turns if you get the right line up and can be more if you don't. I think that's a really good way to make the player really learn the right way to move the board. That being said there were many times I didn't see the solution and would brute force my way through making some of the battles a bit of a slog.
They do flip the script a lot with the boss battles. First off "The Legion of Stationary" is great. While it took me a while to get used to them, they were some of the best fights in the whole game. The Tape boss was extremely cool and used an element that I wished more games could use. They let you get comfortable with the battle system then the tape is like "no you can't move stuff around, or you have to move the 2 rings around at once." This was such a cool battle and it really did make you think. I will say it was a little weird that the bosses were real life objects like colored pencils or a bunch of rubber bands, but I thought it was more comical. I know a lot of folks did not like them at all. They were set up and referenced though because all of the tools were mentioned in a bookshelf in the origami craftsman's library. This is how set up and pay off is done correctly because Olly would have seen him using them and so he'd use them against the toads and Mario just a nice little touch really. If you missed the book in the library scene they really hammer it home by showing you the legion of stationary was on the origami craftman's desk. I've looked around online and apparently a lot of the bosses can be beaten differently, they don't all end in 1000 fold arms finishers which is super cool.
Also the two other big mechanics for this game were the 1000 fold arms and the paper macho bad guys. The 1000 fold arm thing was fine, it felt right at home in a game like this which focused on origami. That being said the paper macho characters felt tacked on. They did not belong in this game, They were the other side of the battles being in real time and defeated by Mario using his hammer on them. The reason why they had to have these were if Olivia was not with you like on the cruise ship you had a way to take down a boss without her help, because she's needed for the 1000 fold arm technique. Cool idea, but felt wrong for this game which focused on origami it's like they really really wanted to make this a Zelda game and have action style battles to contrast to the puzzle ones. Again, I could see them being used in another game.
If they do make another Paper Mario game, and I hope they do, I hope they keep pushing the needle forward.Every game since Sticker Star has been a HUGE improvement, and if we're not going back to the original games I hope each game makes an effort to address all of the glaring issues that all of us Paper Mario fans have.

For Your Entertainment ~ Chapter Three
Tumblr media
Summary: Peasley, fearing for Luigi, searches for answers.
Warnings: Gore, Character Death, Murder
“Luigi?!"
He couldn’t feel anything.
“Luigi?!”
He twitched slightly, trying to regain some sense. Everything around him felt muffled.
“Please wake up!"
He was being shaken awake.
“I’m right here, Luigi, I’m right here! It’s okay, please open your eyes…!”
He felt warm arms wrapped around him. He shifted, clutching onto whoever was hugging him, trembling fingers weakly clawing into fabric.
“Luigi…?!”
He murmured something inaudible.
“Luigi! You’re awake!”
“I’m… awake…”
“Don’t push yourself, darling…! It’s okay, I’m here…”
Luigi moved limply, feeling an incredible weight on his entire body, limbs heavy. He tried to speak, but all that came out were broken mumbles and croaks.
He was hugged tighter.
”I’m so, so sorry… I didn’t mean to stay out for so long... I knew I should have come home sooner, I know, and I'm sorry... and I… P-Peach, she... after the meeting, she was so distraught over something and, she had me and a few others help look for her citizens who were missing… and… we must have been out longer than I anticipated, oh, I'm so sorry...!”
Luigi froze, his breath hitching.
“Luigi? Are you alright?”
“It was r-real…”
“What?”
Luigi looked up at Peasley’s face, who was still cuddling him close. Peasley had a concerned expression on his face, questioning Luigi repeatedly about what he meant, but Luigi didn’t respond. His head rolled to the side, examining the environment around him. They were still in the living room.
Luigi shakily pointed to the television, which now showed nothing more than static.
“Did... d-did you watch a scary movie while I was gone? You know you should watch those with me if you really want to…!”
“Tape… box… v-video…”
”What are you talking about?"
All the haunting images came flooding back at once. Luigi felt consciousness threatening to fade as he recalled Toad’s screams for help, the blood… the terrible, horrible laughter…
”T-Toad…”
“Toad? That’s...” Peasley cocked his head to the side, a bit confused. “...That’s the name of the person we were looking for... And his sister, as well… Toadette, was it?”
Without warning, Luigi released a pained sob, burying his face into Peasley’s shoulder.
“Luigi? What’s wrong?”
“Dh... d-dead… Toad… dead…”
“What?! What are you talking about? Luigi, please, I want to understand-!"
”Th… The tape…”
”Luigi, please, calm down, you’re frightening me… if this is a panic attack, I’m right here, Luigi, I’m not going to leave you, I promise, I’m right here-“
“TOAD IS DEAD!” Luigi shrieked, pointing to the television feverishly. He dissolved into harsh, guttural sobs, Peasley shushing him.
”It’s okay, it’s okay… I promise…”
Peasley moved to turn off the television, since it seemed to be causing Luigi so much distress. He didn’t exactly know what was going on, but he assumed it had something to do with the built-up stress from the past week.
Luigi was still repeating the fact that Toad was dead, mumbling the mantra incoherently to himself.
The prince sighed, helping Luigi up to his feet. He escorted the brunette out of the room, Polterpup barking at the pair as they went upstairs, Peasley whispering soothing words of comfort to his husband. “Luigi… It’s okay… I promise you… It’s going to be okay…”
                                          - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
It had taken hours for Luigi to calm down.
The two had retired to their bedroom, Luigi having lied down on the bed, trying to get comfortable. He wanted to sleep and be at peace for awhile, but his efforts proved useless. Peasley sat by him the entire night, all throughout Luigi’s whimpers and panicked murmurs, trying to calm him down and soothe his worries.
At one point, Peasley had put a cold cloth on Luigi's head, thinking maybe this could all be a fever-induced delirium. He didn’t show signs of illness, but Peasley didn’t know how else to explain it.
Polterpup lied down beside his owner, Luigi petting the ghostly pup to distract himself as he whimpered and held back tears.
As every minute passed, Luigi began to tire himself out.
Peasley had been tidying up a few things around their bedroom when he heard Luigi go silent before snoring lightly, having finally fallen asleep. He smiled, delivering a small kiss to the resting brunette. He thought about following his lead and getting some sleep himself, but his attention was turned to figuring out exactly what had caused all this.
He crept downstairs quietly, entering the living room and turning the television back on. He certainly wasn’t going to be the first to admit how abysmal he was with handling technology, but he could comprehend it enough to know how to rewind the tape.
He kept his thumb pressed down upon the rewind button on the whirring machine until he heard a click, pushing the play button, albeit hesitantly.
It only took a few passing moments to realize what was wrong, and why Luigi had been so mortified.
Peasley had only seen Toad on a few occasions before, at kart races he spectated or get-togethers Peach planned, but seeing him here was gut-wrenching. He looked so scared.
And the person who was tormenting him was more horrific than he could’ve ever imagined. They weren’t like a horror movie villain, or a fairytale monster as he had pictured them previously in his mind.
They were real, and their enjoyment of the whole macabre situation made Peasley feel light-headed.
He couldn’t believe what he was seeing. But, he didn’t stop watching. As much as his stomach twisted and his face paled, he knew he had to figure this out, for Luigi’s sake.
The tape showed off the mysterious attacker holding Toad’s head up high with one hand like a trophy, having just decapitated the poor boy's corpse. They scoffed before dropping the rest of his body to the floor casually.
”You weren’t much help for an assistant. I expected more from you.” The speaker’s words were distorted and slightly garbled, but still clear enough to just barely comprehend. ”You perished so quickly, like a candle extinguishing on an eager child’s birthday cake. It's no wonder that practically nobody noticed your disappearance. And rather unfortunate, I must admit.”
Peasley felt a peculiar sensation fill his chest as he watched, as though he’d heard this person’s words, or style of speaking, before somewhere. The way they talked... It seemed oddly familiar.
”The least you could do now is make for a nice decoration.” The figure raised the same blade from before. “You won’t be needing these…”
Without another word, they plunged the knife into the sockets of Toad’s eyes, carving the irises out with the sickening wet sounds of flesh tearing and sclera shredding. When they drew the knife back finally to put their work on display, all that was left on Toad’s face were empty remnants of eyeballs, a dark void left in their place on his skull.
Peasley squeezed his eyes shut, trying to mask his growing horror and urge to just turn off the tape and pretend this was all some nightmare. That is, until the murderer began speaking again.
”Pathetic.”
The killer released a grunt as they tossed the head offscreen like a broken toy, the sound of it hitting the ground with a thud and rolling away still audible.
”I do hope my next assistant will last a little while longer than you… Why, after all, she has been dying to see you... It’ll be a pleasure to reunite you two at long last.”
Peasley felt his chest tighten as the dark figure now turned and approached the camera, a wide disfigured smile planted on their face. And as they approached, Peasley could now make out some of their features despite the dark lighting.
Their face appeared… broken. As though bits and pieces of their skin was missing.
Though, oddly enough, half of their face looked almost split in color. It seemed fitting for a deranged killer to have such an awful makeup job, but the way their face looked was almost too natural. As though they had torn the face off a porcelain doll and attached it to their own.
They were wearing faded clothing, tattered garb draped around their neck by a broken clip that barely functioned. And though the tape recording quality was low, he could make out hints of yellow and violet plastered on the fabric.
As they absently played with the blood stained knife in front of the camera for a few moments, humming sweetly, Peasley could make out the outline of black leather gloves on their hands.
Peasley jumped when the murderer chuckled once more, still spinning the blade in their palms.
”You know who I am, don’t you? You may not want to accept it yet. And that’s perfectly fine.”
They paused for a moment.
”Death is a cruel thing, as you know. But I’ve learned to be a patient man. I have all the time in the world.”
There was the sound of paper crinkling from just off of the side of the camera’s view, the knife being set down.
”You see, I have so many more people to meet with. So many more tricks to put on display. So many more bows to take. And I won’t rest until everyone you love is dead at my hands, as I promised.”
The letter.
Peasley instantly knew how he'd recognized the style of speech now. The theatrical tone of voice. The delight. That was him. He’d sent it. He hadn't been lying at all.
He was deadly serious.
”Until next time...”
He looked up, staring straight at the camera lens with a crooked smile on his face, one glaring yellow eye visible in the static.
Tumblr media
"Ciao~!"
Click.
The screen went black, leaving Peasley to stare at his own horrified reflection upon a layer of static.
Acting hastily and without thinking, he practically tore the tape out of the player, tearing the insides out and throwing the remaining broken cassette away. He turned off the television and backed away, shaking his head. He started back toward the stairs with hurried feet.
He never thought this could happen.
He never thought that someone out there could be this awful… to Luigi, of all people!
Luigi didn’t have enemies, except a few jerks who occasionally picked on him. He certainly didn't have enemies that were murderers, swearing vengeance on his very livelihood, threatening his friends and family!
Peasley truly didn’t know what to believe anymore.
He rushed back upstairs to ensure Luigi was still okay, and to his relief, nothing had changed since he went downstairs. Luigi was sound asleep, snugly cuddled up in the covers, holding the thick duvet close to his chest and breathing softly.
Peasley exhaled, shutting the door behind him. And though there was no present reason to, he locked it.
He sat down beside Luigi, gently running a hand through his husband's hair. Peasley's thoughts were clouded, still trying to figure everything out. He needed answers. And to get that, he needed some help from Luigi. Especially since the murderer seemed so sure that Luigi would know exactly who he was…
Luigi shifted gently, whimpering short phrases and whining in his sleep, his soft breaths increasing to panicked mumbles.
Peasley held onto his hand tightly, hoping the bad dream Luigi was facing would subside.
He didn’t want him to have to wake up into facing another nightmare.
