A-qing is such a tragic figure and i care her so much but one thing I love is this quiet character arc she has from a little girl doing what she has to do to survive, already more wordly and bitter than Xiao Xingchen even at her young age, a girl who isn't cruel but isn't here to help other people either, into genuinely a kind of guardian figure. After her death she sticks around and dedicates her non-life to protecting people, leading visitors away from Xue Yang and warning wwx and the juniors about him. And it works, in the end, without her they wouldn't have made it.

The yi city arc can seem so cynical sometimes. Idealism fails, helping a dying stranger by the side of the road only leads to tragedy, but a-qing cares and it helps! She's a counterpart to both xiao xingchen and song lan in that way, and thematically also a kind of counterpart to xue yang, where tragedy becomes a motivation for caring instead of against it. It's a weird thing to say since she's a kid that dies and her soul is shattered, but I think yi city would have come off a lot darker without her.

I've been thinking of how JC attempts to sacrifice himself for WWX when they first run from the Wens after the fall of LP and his reasons/feelings for doing that and reconciling them with this person who acts so shamefully and is full of such hatred that he kills all 'demonic cultivators' after wwx's death. Even as WWX thinks of whether JC and JL are okay, I notice he calls JC "Sect Leader" out loud to others. I don't know how they could reconcile. Sorry lots of feelings.

I've answered your two asks separately as they were addressing different aspects of the novel and my original response was getting rather long 😆

It certainly was an unexpected revelation when we found out that JC lured the searching Wen cultivators away from an unsuspecting WWX. Of course, I don't think it was his intention to get caught in the process, but he definitely thought about someone else other than himself for once - which was interesting. Although it was one of the very few selfless acts he did during the course of the novel, it still doesn't retract any of the awful things he has done, nor the way he treated WWX or his homophobic outburst.

Even after WWX has died, JC's bitterness remains very strong and he does indeed hunt down those that use the ghost path in hope of capturing WWX, should he return. Which I always find quite telling of just how little JCs actually knows and understands WWX - who would never actually do such a thing.

In all honesty, JC actually redeemed himself ever so slightly at the very end of the novel, when he decides not to tell WWX about how he really lost his golden core. Instead, he finally let him go, severing the very last thread of "debt" and "obligation" between them. It was actually a fitting character arc for him and it showed a glimmer of possible growth.

Even if JC had selfishly told WWX that particular fact, I don't think it would have changed much at all. WWX has already paid back his "debt" and "obligations" to the Jiang sect far beyond what was required or reasonable. There is nothing left to say between them and WWX literally has nothing left to give. Too much water has gone under the bridge. All of that is in the past and WWX always focuses on the present. So either way, nothing would have changed. I also think WWX would not want to associate with someone he thought his love for LWJ was disgusting and shameful regardless of anything else at play. He chooses love, happiness and freedom as his parents did before him.

JC and WWX are too different, in both personality and virtue. They would not have been friends or hung out in any other scenario bar the circumstance they found themselves in during the course of the novel. They both literally embody the traits that the other actually cannot stand! Their relationship was that of a master and subordinate, it was toxic and they are both better off giving each other a wide berth and moving on.

A reconciliation would never happen and it doesn't need to. WWX is entitled to a happy life for all his efforts in his previous life and JC needs to live with the consequences of his actions and learn from them in his own way.

I know it's probably not the response you were hoping for. But if you consider the above, they both got some form of a happy ending. JC is finally learning to let go of things that little bit more and WWX is free to move on and live his life how he always wanted. I honestly couldn't think of a more suitable and realistic ending.

Gradually, Jiang Cheng grows aware. Pain throbs through him with every pulse, highlighting every point at which the cables bind him. He steadies his breath, listening. To his left, someone is humming poorly as they shuffle objects around. Paper, perhaps?

"Do you think I don't know how you breathe?"

Jiang Cheng freezes, then lifts his chin and opens his eyes. Lightning arcs from his neck down his spine, and his breath hitches from the pain. "Who are you?" he rasps.

The stranger is young with the air of a cultivator. He's draped in black, grey, and red without any insignias; so he's either in disguise or a rogue. He's not wearing a sword, but a black dizi with a red tassel is stuck haphazardly in his belt. His eyes are red, but his expression is sweet, curious, and full of mirth.

"So it's true? Aiya, Jiang Cheng, this one is your humble shixiong, Wei Wuxian." He bows elegantly.

While Wei Wuxian's eyes are downcast, Jiang Cheng flexes his wrists against the immortal binding cables behind his back. Unfortunately, even Yu Ziyuan would find the knots satisfactory. As the stranger rises, Jiang Cheng stills.

"I am da-shixiong," Jiang Cheng offers cautiously.

"Oh, here, sure," Wei Wuxian says, flicking his hands as if batting that away. "What a sad little world you have. No me, no Baoshan Sanren."

"Baoshan Sanren gave her life to protect--"

Wei Wuxian scoffs. "That old woman was bored."

Anger rose within Jiang Cheng. Whoever the fuck this asshole was, he could go die. "My apologies for the lackluster surroundings. Feel free to leave at any time."

"Jiang Cheng, Jiang Cheng, you're so cute. If I leave, you know it will be with you."

"Your sad delusions aren't my problem," Jiang Cheng hisses. "If you think you're the first person to decide we're more than we are, you're mistaken. I don't fucking know you. I don't want to."

The air around Wei Wuxian shifts. He smiles. "But I know you, a-Cheng. I know everything that shaped you, and I'm sorry it took me so long to realize that we belong together. Really, I am. But I won't ever let you out of my sight again."

Jiang Cheng closes his eyes. He needs information. "Again?"

Wei Wuxian chuckles. "Will Sandu Shengshou pester the truth out of me now? Interrogate away. Yes, again. My Jiang Cheng got himself killed."

"How did he die?"

Wei Wuxian tugs on the end of his ribbon. Although it's gentle, every slight jerk lances through Jiang Cheng. "Is that really what you want to know?"

Jiang Cheng looks into Wei Wuxian's eyes. "Did you kill him?" he asks, voice flat.

"What a mean thing to say," Wei Wuxian says. "Shidi, no one will marry you if you stay like this."

"Who's my shixiong? You couldn't have been a good one since your shidi died."

Wei Wuxian slowly wraps the purple ribbons around his hand. As the tension increases, Jiang Cheng must lean closer. He ends up with his chin in one of Wei Wuxian's hands while the other wraps around his guan. "You should consider your position before you speak to me," Wei Wuxian says, brushing a thumb over his lips even as he pulls up on the guan. Jiang Cheng gasps. "Maybe you're not my Jiang Cheng, but I can make you him. It won't be that hard; you're both such brats. All we need is time..."

As he speaks, his expression grows distant. His touches grow gentler.

"You're hurting me."

Wei Wuxian's gaze fixes on him again. "I know. But bear it for me, alright? It's going to hurt a lot, but it's the only way."

It's not as though Jiang Cheng has a choice. He nods.

"Good boy," Wei Wuxian murmurs as he drops the ribbons and walks back to the table. He picks up a long stick that's difficult to make out in the gloom and begins whistling. As he returns, Jiang Cheng straightens, eyes wide.

The Jiang discipline whip.

"He never let me see all of the scars, but let's play it by ear."

MDZS Prosopagnosia (face blindness) AU

I want an AU of MDZS except Wei Wuxian is face blind. I just feel like that would change so much, adding both comedy and terror to the story overall.

Innocent Youth

Jiang Cheng unwittingly cultivated his shouty persona from a very young age, because he subconsciously realized that his shixiong was more comfortable with him when he stood out from the crowd in this way. Similarly, in the post-resurrection days, jc always lets Zidian spark purple in a very obvious and prolonged way, so wwx doesn't have to linger uncomfortably in an awkward is-he-or-isn't-he-my-brother zone.

Jiang Yanli slowed herself down as a child, becoming very calm and quiet and slow-moving, because that's when her shidi is the most relaxed. She quickly learned the look on his face, when he's trying to figure out who someone is without giving away his weakness... when he's desperately waiting for someone else to use a name, to give him a toe-hold. She always greets everyone by name: just for wwx. She also often announces herself in the third person: others might find it weird, but her didi is always so grateful.

Wwx actually needs to use Jiang Fengmian's unfortunate teeth as a marker to differentiate him from his son, once Jiang Cheng reached his adult height. (The frog on Sandu's hilt really helps, too.)

A lot of the shidis in the Jiang Sect know about wwx's special issues, and totally riff on him by switching their swords and hair ornaments just to fuck with him. They can't switch their fighting styles, though, so the Jiang quickly become a sect where instant spar-offs happen often and are no big deal.

All the people who love wwx have adjusted for this in many ways, realizing that they either need to verbally identify themselves or adapt distinctive clothing/mannerisms/scents/body language.

Wwx wears clothes that don't match any sect because sect uniforms make everyone so homogeneous that he can't even discern gender, much less individual people. (Uniforms actually give him mental heebie jeebies, because they make his life so hard and uncertain.)

Cloud Recesses Student Arc

Wwx has to ask before he fights whether it's going to be friendly or to the death, since he doesn't always know if the person he's fighting is a friend or foe. Wwx defaults to treating all fights as friendly fights (which is why he never even unsheathed his sword when lwj attacked him that first night in Cloud Recesses) because he can't stand the thought of hurting a friend, or just someone innocent.

Lan Wangji is very still. Very still, very quiet, very tall and always wears white and smells of sandalwood. He is easy to recognize. ... Except when he could be Lan Xichen. If there's a smile, or any color, then he's Lan Xichen. (This means that wwx immediately knows who kissed him on Phoenix Mountain, because he doesn't use his sight to identify, well, anyone.)

Nie Huaisang becomes a friend because of his choppy, erratic, fast-paced motions, both when he is speaking and moving. Also, he's unusually short so that helps.

He is secretly fond of Lan Qiren because that dreadful and unflattering beard is such a great identifier. He loves Nie Mingjue because he's literally and distinctly larger than everyone else. Later, he will become immediate friends with Sisi, because dramatic facial scarring is the best cue there is for someone like him. (Is anyone fat? He likes fat people. He likes tattooed people. He'd have loved Mo Xuanyu with his Hanging-Ghost-painted face, because, wow, that's so obvious. Xue Yang's missing pinky finger is so helpful.)

Wei Wuxian knows everyone's swords VERY WELL because he can recognize them and use them to identify which asshole in gold with a peony on his chest (for example) this dude might be. This is what he calls "my poor memory". But it actually means that Jin Zixuan looks exactly like Jin Zixun to him, if not for Suihua.

Burial Mound Days

He's got a string of orphans, and calls them all A-Yuan. No, seriously. Word has got out, and all the homeless babies know they can move into the Burial Mounds and get doted on by EVERYONE because no one there is about to correct the Yiling Patriarch.

Dead Wen Ning is easy to pick out because of his stiff gait, awkward stance and distinctive pallor with the black veins. This makes him an automatic wwx favorite. (The stuttering helped, even back when he was alive.) Wen Qing is tiny, and also, no one else is wearing Wen robes, so she becomes a good friend, too.

He actually really likes all fierce corpses, because the way they move is so distinctive that he always knows what he's dealing with.

Can you imagine how fucking terrifying the world must be when you know that all Wen Zhuliu needs to do is put on a different robe and then he can walk right up to you and wreck your core? Same goes for wrh, jgs, jgy, wc, you name it. Talk about hypervigilance.

Think of all the talismans he's invented to keep himself and the Wen Remnants safe because he knows he can't tell friend from foe and has to count on magic to do it.

Post-Resurrection

Lwj picked up on Jiang Yanli’s habit announcing herself by name instead of using “I”, and consequently uses third person for himself, too. The Junior Ducklings do it, too, although they don't understand why, at first.

Wwx cannot, for the life of him, tell lsz and ljy apart if they just stand quietly next to each other. Ljy will never think this is not hilarious. Especially because wwx will offer them chicken to see which one accepts it. (It’s foolproof.)

He is utterly and completely unable to tell the Twin Jades apart unless they're speaking. Lan Wangji has learned to announce himself simply to protect his brother from being leaped upon and kissed at random intervals. The whole sandalwood thing? Lwj marinates himself in it to give wwx a clue about who he is before he's within liplocking distance.

I tried to look through your Tumblr to see if you'd answer this but couldn't find it. I wanted to inquire if BFF WWX & NHS are purely fanon? I know they are friendly during the study arc but was it, 'write to me, we can't lose touch' friendly or 'we see each other every day' classmates friendly.

Either way, I do think they would have been friends if the war didn't happen but I think it would have been secret. Mostly because I think Madam Yu and JC wouldn't like him being chummy with his betters.

Also, did he actually manipulate MXY into sacrificing himself or was MXY just tired and saw it as a way out and a middle finger to his tormenters?

Hi. Thanks for your patience once again.

Sadly, it was the latter. They were buddies for the extent of the study group and after that in the book, they are never mentioned to communicate again till Wei Wuxian returns from the dead, and even then it's pretty clear that it was a more distant relationship. Wei Wuxian knew him well when they were teenagers, but any actual relationship is all in the past. (Much of this likely comes from CQL where they are actual friends and connect several times in scenes that simply do not exist in the book and people then adding it into their novel based stuff)

It is possible that they could have been friends in a non-war world, depending on how much effort Nie Huaisang was able to put into it. As you say, Madam Yu and Jiang Cheng probably would have not been all that open to the idea, no matter what sort of connection it is, as Jiang Cheng easily gets jealous of anyone who can pull Wei Wuxian's attention from Lotus Pier and Madam Yu is Madam Yu. But Wei Wuxian does require some input from the other side too. As funny as it may be to joke about him doing all the work to make friends, the truth of things is that he needs reciprocation to keep making those overtures. Even he and Lan Wangji struggle till he starts getting something back. If Nie Huaisang isn't putting forth his own effort, it will still fizzle and die.

So I don't really go in for sad boy Mo Xuanyu theory at all, I think that most of Nie Huaisang's influence in this situation would have been when and who. But what we get out of the mess of scribbled notes and the fact that he memorized this ritual back in Jinlintai before he was sent home is that he was a young man who was deeply embittered by the situation he was in and chose to strike back at his abusers even worse. He may have been sweet, but the fact that he memorized a sacrifice and revenge spell points to him having a dark streak even then.

Nie Huaisang's mastery and manipulations are in part finding those who are angry enough or good enough to do the work for him. He takes a very off hand approach to Jin Guangyao's downfall up until the end, letting others who he may not be able to handle or anticipate (Sisi, Bicao, Wei Wuxian himself as well as Lan Wangji taking a much more active approach in the matter) spin his web tighter till Jin Guangyao is already trapped and doomed. While no doubt Mo Xuanyu sacrificing himself to bring Wei Wuxian back into the game is a part of his plan, the amount of personal manipulation needed to bring someone who wouldn't already have had those wishes around to his point of view is a lot more than he's put into anyone else involved. It just doesn't fit with my understanding of the characters and schemes that he would do that. After all, their timing was in sync. That suggests a mutual plan to me.

Summary: Lan Zhan dies two years before canon and promptly wakes up in the library at Cloud Recesses right across from Wei Wuxian, napping facedown in a pile of copywork. He has a lot of questions. Is this the afterlife? If it's not, then is he alone with his memories? And most importantly, what does he need to do to keep his soulmate alive this time? Wei Ying did not stir as he knelt down by the desk. It had been so long since Lan Zhan had seen those beloved features and even longer since he’d been allowed to either get or stay this close to Wei Ying. He looked so different from Lan Zhan’s memories; apple cheeked, clean, and relaxed. Lan Zhan clamped both hands over his own mouth to stop the pained noise that threatened to escape him. Hot tears spilled down his face as he watched the young, safe, and whole boy sleep. His stomach cramped with the effort of holding the sound in, but he’d sooner die than wake Wei Ying up.

Mojo's comments: I was interrupted so many times while reading this that it took 3 days and I cannot do it justice. I did tags, though! Anyway, it's a delightful time travel fix it, wherein lwj dies and opens his eyes to his student days. Slowly, he determines that a handful of other people came back, too, all of whom died before him. He and wwx team up, try to tweak events, get together (lwj died during the 13 years, so there was no established relationship). Meanwhile, there's a mastermind somewhere, pulling strings, putting everyone in their places (meng yao shows up as a student and gets a new arc, focused on lxc of course). Great thoughts on musical cultivation, yin iron and resentful energy. (Also, Madam Yu and Meng Yao get to do a bitch-off, which is very satisfying.)

When I saw the new art of the bending!au I thought 'OMG they match!!( forehead decorations.)' But then I started thinking how it shows that Wangxian are the same yet not. Like the Lan headband and airbender tattoos are symbols of prestigious cultures yet the Lan headband is one of many and in Gusu, especially in the Cloud Recesses, signals that Lan Wangi is part of a group, a sect, a family, that he is not alone. But Wei Wuxian on the other hand, his tattoos mark him as an outlier both as an airbender among a water bending sect AND also an airbending MASTER at a young age.( I'm just spittballing that last headcanon since in canon WWX is a prodigy and in atla its shown that Aang was beginning to feel ostracized bc he was an airbending prodigy before he was frozen so my brain connected the two.)

Also for some reason seeing WWX with the airbending tattoos a thought popped into my head saying that Lan Qiren can't get that mad at WWX w/out coming across culturally insensitive in public since airbenders are known to be playful, silly tricksters and fun loving.

Either way I love ur new art piece and it's understandable if u don't want to put in the tattoos as a permanent design as small detailing for an overall bigger design can be a pain. ( I say this as someone who was part of the transformers fandom and saw many artists leave out the faction signs out of their 'bots and 'cons art pieces bc it was often at times a pain to draw something relatively small and detailed among a bigger detailed design. So it's understandable if u want to leave it out.)

I love these insights!! The main reason I haven’t added tattoos to his design so far is because in my mind he would’ve been taken in by the jiang water tribe at a fairly young age (about 7? Or 9?), like in MDZS canon. Which means he wouldn’t yet have earned his tattoos.

In my (mind you, very vague) world building, air benders would have been rare even before wwx was born; baoshan sanren would lead the last, elusive group of air nomads in a hidden location & cangse sanren would’ve left their community to roam the world (& meet water bender wei changze!). Wwx would’ve been raised and taught air bending by her before his parents’ untimely passing.

So I guess I’m trying to decide whether my story would include an arc where wwx meets boashan sanren & learns from her at some point, then earns his tattoos. I like the look of both anyhow so I’m trying not to overthink it!

No I don’t get tropes that out down one half of wx to make the other look better. The amount of bashing either lwj or wwx is the comments in the name of protecting “the wronged party” always makes me feel horrible. Not to mention it’s atrociously ooc to turn one of them into a scum in favor of a redemption trope.

Agreed, anon. I think this all mostly comes about because of character favoritism (“I like this character, therefore they are the best, narratively, and they are the only good one.”) and people inserting fanon into canon. I’ve noticed that the more someone buys into the morally gray!wwx, oblivious!wwx, and/or hyperactive!wwx narratives, the more likely they are to believe that Wei Wuxian is an unthinking, impulsive, hedonistic character who only does things for the thrill of adventure, never knowing or caring for who he harms in the process. So we have people obsessed with how wwx has “hurt” Lan Wangji and believe that wwx must grovel for his affections. These people tend to also believe that Jiang Cheng is right to hate wwx and that Lan Xichen was justified in his Guanyin Temple speech.

On the other hand, we have people who are most sympathetic to wwx and the injustices he suffered during his first life when nobody (that he knew of) stood with him. I think the fact that wwx stood alone with not even lwj being publicly, definitely on his side makes these readers group lwj in with the rest of the cultivation world, making them believe that lwj for having “abandoned” wwx in his first life is undeserving of wwx in his second.

Neither of these views really take in wangxian’s relationship based on the narrative the book is setting up but based on what certain readers think their favorite character “deserves” or is “owed,” regardless of what the story has to say. And you’re right: all of this sets up for the idea of a “redemption arc” for the only two main characters in the story who do not require one. People just don’t seem to know what to do with a couple that was set up as enemies-to-lovers (to trick us) but is actually two good people falling in love with each other and choosing to be good together.

8. Is there a story idea in your mental vault that you’ve never been brave enough to try writing? Is this the year? Can you tell us about it?

oh my god YES and it's actually the same answer it's been for the last couple years, even though the target has changed. I really, really, really want to write a darkfic. Not just a fic with dark themes, or gore, or horror, but a properly fucked up fic you need to take a break from reading. Something disturbing and uncomfortable.

My problem is I have a cop in my brain. When writing for MDZS I tried so hard to make WWX truly fucked up-- enough to match canon, where, you know, he commits actual atrocities?? Not the cute ones either. The gross ones. But I never managed it, I always ended up bending the narrative to excuse what he was doing. I couldn't commit the way MXTX did, and my anachronistic morality always bled through. While I do like my writing and I've largely accepted that this is a limitation I may never be able to push past, I can't help but be aware that my version of WWX is always gonna be flatter and less dimensional than MXTX's atrocities-committing original. It's fine; I can't exactly be mad at myself for not being able to out-write the actual MXTX, and I think I have enough other strengths to make up for this particular weakness.

I'm hoping it will be a little more doable to write a truly reprehensible Luo Binghe, given the particularities of the PIDW/SVSSS landscape. The LBH in the story I'm currently editing/posting sucks A Very Little Bit as part of a domestication arc, so that's baby step one. i saw a little bit ago that you said you don't ship wangxian (and before you smash the delete button LEMME EXPLAIN THIS IS NOT HATEMAIL) so now i'm curious as to what your fave wwx ships and lwj ships are, if you have any?

:'D you're all good WWX: funnily enough i like most platonic ships with wwx! I loved him with nhs a lot and then they just kinda...dropped the friendship altogether? my friend loved the idea of wwx/lxc as drinking gossiping bitches and while i don't see it it's like ship-in-law :'D i enjoyed his friendship with wen qing during his farmer arc, i LOVE the idea of hatefuck wwx/jzx, or well, more like hatefuck turns soft because things are said and revealed and wwx can't look at jzx the same (/positive). him and jiang cheng have deeper storyline than wangxian to me so if wwx's whole purpose was to platonically be everything and more for his "brother" that'd make his character excellent to me. i also had a headcanon while watching the show that wwx and xue yang were biologically brothers but each took VERY DIFFERENT path in live/was provided with different care. i REALLY love their on-screen chemistry and would love more of that in either direction, yllz wwx joining with xue yang somehow or "fixing him". or become greater archenemies even. i really don't like his behavior with yanli and lwj, yet those are the main ones for his character :'(

LWJ: i don't think i have any proper ships for him (hence why i don't draw much of him :( ), he was just so stoic and repressed i wanted to hear him sing, you feel me :') i enjoyed the problematic gusu trio doing all sorts of things with and to him, i like the idea of warprize lwj/wens with lans, drunk lwj was just so adorable and i wish more were privy to that sight of him :') i know jiang cheng and lwj are suppossed to like...not like each other because of how wwx acts around the other but i've never personally seen it, it's very fanon-y, at least coming from the show.

wwx is very shippable to me (apart from the main two characters he's meant to be connected to, just my luck) whereas lwj is not shippable to me at all (even though i like lwj more out of the two, i think it's just the nature of their characters and wwx interacts with others more, so naturally it comes up more)

I can't exactly compare cql to other chinese shows, but I've watched a lot of american and british shows with close male leads (scrubs, spn, sherlock, house), that constantly no-homo their relationship both in words and actions, and there is such a difference between writers who think two men being gay is repellent/joke material and writers who are working within the limitations set on them to imply two men are in love with each other. scrubs literally had an song called "It's Guy Love (There's Nothing Gay About It)", like no-homoing is when when writers have a male character say something that could be construed as romantic/sexual and immediately follow it with 'but don't worry, I'm not gay because that would be gross and horrifying!' and it's a joke like I can see why people can read wx as non-romantic I guess but the actual term 'no-homo' refers to a very specific form of denial that I haven't once seen in the show. like maybe wwx laughing after saying something flirty in CR arc might read as him thinking the idea of them together is funny but that happens like, a few times early on (which can have several different interpretations, too!) and afterwards I can't think of a single moment in cql where either of the leads no-homos the other

Jin Guangyao and Wei Wuxian’s lives mirror each other so perfectly actually. They are basically the same person until their corresponding downfalls. And after their deaths we only get to see how WWX grows as a person, but if the story went on longer, we would arguably find some further similarities. And I’ll get to that later, just bear with me.

Starting from their births, here are some of the parallels that jump to mind at once:

Both spent their early childhoods in poor conditions.

Both grew into talented cultivators in the clan of their mother’s acquaintance.

Both had a father figure of questionable relation to them: Jiang Fengmian was rumored to be WWX’s actual father, while JGY’s place at the Lanling Jin had been questioned, because for all anyone knew, JGY could have been a random bastard with no actual relation to Jin Guangshan.

Both had a ‘fierce’ stepmother who despised them. The husband of the stepmother was afraid of her in both cases.

Each had a brother – the lawful child of the parental figures – whom they outshined.

Both played a role in their parental figures’ deaths (clearly very different roles though).

Both WWX and JGY develop their closest bonds with one of the Twin Jades of Lan.

This is where the parallels just get so blatantly obvious. Also it’s Madam Lan and Qinheng-Jun's relationship which both Wangxian and Xiyao mirror. The Lan in question’s beloved person fucks up bad. At the end QHJ, LWJ and LXC, in the following order: saves Madam Lan’s life, tries to save WWX but fails, takes JGY’s life himself. As a final result, the Lan boys close themselves away from society.

As a result of Mo Xuanyu summoning WWX, him and JGY even became blood-relatives.

And I’m sure there’s even more of these.

Of course, as I mentioned, we only have WWX/JGY parallels until the point of their deaths. Up to that point, both their stories are sad and tragic. Though JGY had accumulated his mistakes for much longer than WWX, and accordingly, he had a much higher mountain to blunder down from, which gained him a more painful death.

Following this pattern of similarities between the two, I imagine JGY would be back eventually. Since he became a fierce corpse in canon, he’d go on living the same way as Wen Ning.

And then the parallels would continue – to a certain point.

When WWX thinks back to his past life, he notes that he used to be quite arrogant. I think JGY would have the same realization.

WWX managed to shape his tragedy into a happy ending, because he got a second chance at life, in which he accepted his past mistakes and learned to grow fom them. And that is the important stage of character development, one which JGY did not live to make. (Likewise, WWX did not get to live it either pre-Qiongqi Road, but he is the central character of the novel, therefore his second chance has been told.) When JGY has repented he’d come back, too, probably as a fierce corpse, then he could finally begin his redemption arc, and technically go through a similar character development as WWX: accept the mistakes, grow from them.

WWX’s philosophy of the single plank bridge was a reoccurring element. First he used the phrase at Burial Mounds while he lived with the Wen Clan remnants, then post-Qiongqi Road LWJ brings it up, quoting WWX, when they were fleeing from Carp Tower. Wangxian end up living according to this philosophy, leaving the politics and their previous lifestyles in the cultivation world behind for a quiet and peaceful life together while wandering through narrow paths and single plank bridges. WWX’s character arc comes to an end.

This should be the point in the story, where JGY and WWX’s parallelled roads finally separate.

An unbothered life with LWJ is exactly the lifestyle that fits both WWX and LWJ’s personalities. JGY’s endgame, on the other hand, would not be a retreated life with LXC: cultivating and night hunting, just the two of them, for the rest of their days. JGY was born a leader. A politician. You see, apart from the misdeeds guided by arrogance, he did a hell of a good job with Lanling. He eliminated his father’s corrupt regime, increased the public welfare and safety by his policies and the watchtowers. This IS what he was supposed to do.

Lan Xichen was not cut out to be a lone cultivator, either. He’s sociable, he’s a kind, self-conscious leader of his clan, he loves being clan leader.

JGY and LXC were a team, and as a team, the two were able to move mountains. They were practically what the concept of sworn brothers was made for. This is simply a dynamic that one is born to have with another.

And so, this – a team, sworn brothers, an alliance between two prominent clans – is what they shall continue to be for a completed character arc. Pointing at how there is no right or wrong answer when one must choose the crowded broad road or the narrow path. The core is to choose the one which fits, the one which lets one become complete.
