Otabek was a great figure skater. He learned how to skate and would skate professionally. If he wasn't on the rink skating, he was somewhere being a DJ for people. Sometimes, he was at home. He liked the quietness, and he liked his privacy. Skating was second nature to him, and he had won several awards and medals.

He met you on his way to DJ at some place. You needed a ride somewhere, and he felt like being nice. Normally, he wouldn't have gotten himself involved, but there was something about you that drew him to you. He helped you out and drove off to his destination. It wasn't until he was on his way home that he saw you again. You were standing on a street corner. It wasn't safe to be doing that.

“Hey, do you need a ride?”

“Yes, please. Thank you so much.”

“What are you doing out so late?”

“I was heading to my hotel. I just came here as a tourist. I'm not too familiar with the area.”

He didn't say another word, but he dropped you off at the location that you needed. He waited a minute. There was something about this situation that he couldn't quite place.

He watched you as you walked off into the distance and went inside the hotel. He shook it off and went on his way. He wasn't going to bother someone who wouldn't be staying long. It wasn't his place, and he wasn't going to see you again anyway. Eventually, he drove off into the night. Still, he couldn't help as his mind wandered back to the night with you.

He sat up in his bed and rubbed his face. It was too late in the night, but too early. He wandered around the house before deciding to get ready for the day. He needed something to do. Then he saw you again. It wasn't intentional. He was just trying to go about his life. He almost crashed his motorcycle. He almost flipped it. It didn't matter. He had come to a sudden halt. He wasn't expecting to see you again.

The days turned into weeks. The weeks turned to months. Eventually, he asked you out, and you accepted.

“Have you ever been ice skating?”

“No, I haven't. Have you?”

“Yes, I could teach you if you'd like.”

“Sure!” You said with a smile. You didn't mind trying something new for once. It gave you an adventure, and if you liked it, something you could both do together.

After getting you some ice skates, he stepped out onto the rink, as he had done many times before. He realized that you had never done this before, and you wouldn't move as easily as he would. He turned back to you and held his hand out for you to hold onto. You gratefully took it as you stepped onto the ice. You nearly slipped, but Otabek caught you.

“Thank you.” You said with a nervous laugh.

“No problem; I remember my first time skating.”

You stood up and held your arms out carefully, hoping that you wouldn't fall again as your heart thudded loudly in your chest.

“Here, like this.”

He said as he slid away from you. He wasn't close, but he was far enough away that you could watch him. His movements were slow and careful as he showed you how to move. He moved in next to you as you tried to copy his actions. He was there every step of the way, in case you needed anything.

I am heavily medicated today, laying about waiting for drs and shit. This lets my mind contemplate the bigger issues and implications of very important boys-on-ice shit. Imma make it your problem.

So, we know Otabek's friends are miscevious. Do you think that includes JJ and Leo as well?

Like... dose JJ call Yuri 'princess' not just because he has that build, but because Otabek's name reduces down to a title? (Duke)

Like, 'go get your princess, your grace' - which triples as a mock on Otabek's lower flexibility, teasing him about his title/name, as well as how long Otabek has been in love with/admiring Yuri- and low key accepts Yuri into said friend group in an honored position all at once with what is supposed to be gentle/friendly ribbing?

(leRoy - name means king. Otabek [reduces down to] Duke. Leo de la Iglesia means lion of the church, so like a paladin or knight or something [leo <lion> some times is referred to as a 'king of the jungle' - I will rant about how they don't live in jungles and all that later. They are on a lot of heraldry, tho]. So Yuri obviously needs a title too. [JJ would call Isabell 'my queen' or 'regina' or something.] Female [based onJJ's mind set most likely making pairs in that dichotomy, as that's how it works for him personally] cats are queens (also following a theme, if they are one team [in one friend group], there can be only one queen and king, making Otabek the next highest rank in the friend group - but he's put Yuri on such a high peddistool that he should rank a little higher, and also podium family king Victor is basically Yuri's big brother as far as JJ is concerned, so there is that to consider), combined with Otabek meeting Yuri in juniors would auto translate to 'princess'.)

Is JJ being a little shit, trying to get Otabek and Yuri chatting because he wants for his friend what he has with Isabella? Did he know Otabek was coming and, seeing Yuri right there, thought he could play match maker with some well intentioned ribbing, getting his friend to talk to Yuri if only to explain (and make a new friend himself)?

Are JJ and Leo in a mock 'no, I'm his best friend' contest? Match maker credit can really get you that better/Best friend status, which is a security blanket JJ seems to need.

Is that why Otabek was paused? Irritation at JJ for pissing off the person he’s been waiting years for, damned well knowing what he's up to, but when he was thinking of exsplaning/apologizing to Yuri, Yuri screamed at him, so Otabek peaced out because exsplaning would not help in that moment?

Bet it informed just how much Otabek told Yuri on that bridge.

I wonder if Leo and JJ - when Otabek has Yuri in a very peaceful mood - are going to tease Otabek about that slow burn, seeing if Yuri catches on because Otabek is So FrIkIn Old FaSoNeD (quiet, stoic, & romantic) that they dispared for their friend EVER having a love life do to his being focused on (pachent and pinning for) the only person who moved him like that?

(If Victor and Yuuri are soulmates as stated official, this is officially a soulmates AU, which means Otabek being so observant would know. Those eyes speak deeply to him. You do not use lines about what are referred to as the windows to the soul in a soulmates AU casually, my dudes. The way when Yuri takes the time to actually look at Otabek and something starts to click, combined with the sudden recognition & respect Yuri gives when he finally watches Otabek skate? Otabek is infinitesimally pachent, and his friends want him happy but are little shits, is what I'm saying.

He’s immediately embarrassed and his hands search frantically for what you could be talking about.  Doesn’t even notice you trying to smother a laugh.

You’re probably going to have to catch his hands to get him to stop.  Your best bet is to take his face between your hands to hold him still.  He’s so embarrassed that you could see him like that, that he is really tense.

The moment your lips touch the corner of his mouth and deliver your line, he’s even more embarrassed.  Complains loudly, trying to pretend like his entire face isn’t the color of one of the triplet’s spandex.

A switch flips in him instantly and he’s grabbing you, grumbling about showing you, and kisses you with great enthusiasm.

Yuri Plisetsky

He’s instantly suspicious.  He’s sure there isn’t anything on his face.  That being said, he still tries to subtly wipe at his skin to make sure.  How humiliating would it be if there was?

But your giggling gives you away and pretty soon he’s scowling at you and turning away.

You’ll have to chase him if you want to finish your joke.  He’s not too hard to catch though.  Kiss him quick, before he tries to hide his face.

Basically, explodes when you say the words though.  One part flustered, one part enraged, his whole face turns red and he yells something about You idiot!

Secretly, his insides are wiggling though.

Victor Nikiforov

Doesn’t believe you for a second (like he’d ever let something like that happen), but he plays along.  Makes a fuss touching his face and crying “Wheeeerrre???”

Is totally aware of your giggling, keeps one eye on the way you bite your lip and how you keep getting incrementally closer.

Let’s you finish your game, waiting for the right moment to pounce.  It comes when you try to settle him and deliver your line “It was your dashing good looks!” 

Where you took your game surprises him and he flushes in happiness.  None of his over the top reaction is feigned.  He picks you up, laughing and demands kisses. 

“At least we know your eyesight’s not failing you!

Phichit Chulanont

This one blinks at you and smiles.  “Can you get it for me?”  100% would use something like that to his advantage to get you to touch him.

When you pretend to inspect your face, fingers brushing at his cheeks, he’s watching you with big, dark eyes that are full of something that makes you blush.

“Oops, it turns out it was just your dashing good looks!”  You laugh, but inside, you’re probably quivering because that look is getting worse.

He laughs and captures you, making you unable to escape.  “Do I get to play a trick on you now?” He asks from point blank range, his lips hovering over yours.

Otabek Altin

He’s more startled than anything, then he wipes at his face with his sleeve.  After he does so and sees you laughing, he figures it out pretty quickly.

He’s quick to turn the tables.  “So do you,” he says in a low tone, advancing on you.

You’re probably confused, like how is that possible.  His smirk is subtle as he catches your face between his hands and lowers his face until you are nose to nose.

“Hm, my mistake.  It was just your cuteness.”

Gives you a short kiss to smother your squawk of outrage.

I love when you edit your own works and you realize that something that has been in your story for ages perfectly matches an idea that you decided to implement recently. here's the one that I just discovered. This is a paragraph from one of my works:

"But scraping his way to the podium at Skate America had caught up to him hours ago. It shifted from bitter shock to suffocation, and now it wouldn’t go away. He had fought to keep the younger competitors at bay, finishing in fourth at the end of the short programs. He took third after the free skate, losing to Kenjirou Minami and Otabek Altin by more than twenty points. But third place wasn’t a win.  It was pathetic.  It was embarrassing." 

This is from my first chapter of my first fic, and boy oh boy I love it. The sentence that is in bold perfectly contributes to this idea that I had about Seung-gil's parents. I had this idea in passing but that was a direct quote that I used when I was writing it down so I wouldn't forget it.

I love when creating happens and it feels as thought all signs point to it was simply meant to be

Yuri very carefully picked someone he didn't know to be the first person he slept with. They had flirted with him, complimented his skating and his passion... made him feel - special. Yuri had let them walk him to his room at the hotel, the night of the exhibition, after he'd skated with Otabek in front of the world. What he hadn't expected was the way it hurt, and left him hollow and broken. He'd wanted a fraction of what Victor and Yuuri had - but the next day, all Yuri felt was hollow.

Otabek absolutely loves that you don’t take shit from anyone. He’s aware that you can stand up for yourself, and that you’re very independent.

Yuri on the other hand, at first had some trouble getting along with you. He was used to being the sassy, rebellious one himself, and other people usually got intimidated by his attitude. But you took none of it and always managed to snap  right back at him.

As time progressed Yuri definitely found himself falling for you, just as Otabek had done from the moment he met you. You also couldn’t deny it anymore, and eventually you confessed towards one another which ended up to you all being in a relationship.

You were taken back by all the comments and reactions you got from their fans, most of them were positive, but a lot were extremely pessimistic as well. Just walking on the street with them was a task by itself, and it hardly ever happened that you didn’t got crowded by all their fans.

One time some girl threw a bottle of water right at you, just because she didn’t agree with your relationship. What she didn’t expect was you turning to her with a deadly glare, and starting to throw words at her without filter, while an unimpressed Yuri, and an amused Otabek watch from a distance.

Yuri always challenges you to a skate-off. He loves to test himself, and finds you to be the best rival to skate against. Otabek mostly likes to pair skate, and doesn’t exactly have a preference in partner, but likes that you don’t mind being lifted, while Yuri always wants to lift him, even though Otabek’s stronger in physique.

Yurio ABSOLUTELY got lectured by almost everyone after his exhibition skate

Like cue Yakov’s yelling while Yurio just sips on his slushie

Mila throwing Yurio over her shoulder saying how the little ice kitty is all grown up now while Georgi wails about true love and Anya in the background

Victor very enthusiastically giving Yurio the birds and the bees talk ‘or in this case it would be the birds and the birds right? Bees and the bees? maybe Yuuri and I should just demonstrate’ 

Otabek thinking he’s being glared at by Yuuri, and when he finally has the courage to bring it up, Yuuri puts on his best Russian accent, goes into ‘Eros’ mode and says ‘if you hurt our Yuratchka, I’ll turn you into Borsch’... Otabek looking like he now needs a fresh pair of underwear and Yuuri laughing and telling him he’s just kidding, in reality he’s squinting because he can’t see without his glasses.

I can just imagine what Yuri living with Victor and Yurio in Russia would be like:

He and Victor sharing an apartment and bed because let’s be honest, they’ve already done this before

Yuri training with the rest of the Russian bunch and becoming Yakov’s favorite because he’s the only one that’ll put consideration into what Yakov says (still doesn’t listen most of the time though)

Yuri asking different things about Russian culture and monuments

Yurio cutting Victor off before he can speak because he’ll be damned if he isn’t the one to tell Yuri everything

Yuri meeting Yurio’s grandfather and gushing over the food he makes

Grandpa makes a sly comment to Yurio later about how he should keep Yuri and Yurio seriously thought about it

Yuri giving Georgi some relationship advice and how kisses do not work for problem solving

Seriously, him and Georgi becoming friends cause all we got to see of him was jealousy and being heartbroken

He and Victor collectively laughing when Mila pulls her antics on Yurio

Victor not laughing all that much when Mila starts flirting with Yuri, whether she wants to get on Victor’s nerves or not

After hours Yuri, Victor, and Makkachin cuddle up together on the couch while watching a movie (definitely something Disney cause Victor is still shit at Japanese, Yuri still hasn’t mastered Russian, and they’re both children)

Who falls asleep first depends on who worked more but most of the time it’s Yuri because Victor always makes him little spoon for his ego and Victor is just so warm when wrapped around him

Victor never carries Yuri to the bed

Either Victor stays cuddled up with Yuri as he sleeps

Or he just lazily throws a blanket on top of him while dragging Makkachin to the more comfortable bed

Yuri is the first to wake up in the morning, surprisingly

If they have work then it’s Victor, otherwise it’s Yuri

Victor is incredibly lazy when he knows he has nothing to do

Luckily Yuri always knows how to cook something because of his family’s business

When Victor wakes up first? Be prepared for burnt toast and mostly raw eggs

Either that or he doesn’t cook at all

On late nights when neither can go to sleep Victor will turn up the AC and run a hot bath to simulate the feeling of the hot springs

Whether he does this for Yuri or himself? We will never know

Since Makkachin can never control himself, there was one point where he jumped in the bath with them

And then shook the water off himself

They couldn’t get the smell of extremely wet dog off of them for days

Yurio is always there for sleepovers

I don’t care whether you ship it or not

He always ends up cuddling Yuri and kicking Victor off the bed on his sleep

Yurio was not allowed for sleepovers after the second night

But Yurio doesn’t give a shit

He now sleeps there almost every night

Father!Victuuri confirmed

Despite what people think, it is much more hectic when their in Russia than in Japan

As if anyone doubted that

But that’s the way they like it :)

Even though it was head canons from the start, this came out as way more Domestic!Victuuri than I thought it would be. But who’s complaining?

Bonus:

Otabek definitely comes to visit Yurio for a couple of weeks and this makes Father!Victuuri go from 10 to 100

Victor asks the more embarrassing questions

“So what are you planning to do with our little Yurio baby?”

“Yurio may be a raging kitten but he’s still small~”

“You saved Yurio from his fangirls that were stalking him? Say, how did you know when to become a knight in shining armor? Are you one of his angels?~”

Yurio almost kills Victor

Yuri asks more subdued questions

“How long are you planning on staying?”

Yuri’s mind: if he stays longer than a week then he has feelings. Wait. Are he and Yuri secretly dating? I should get Victor to ask.

“Do you like Russia?”

Yuri’s mind: would you be willing to stay with Yuri or would you whisk him away from us? *suspicious pork cutlet bowl noises*

Yurio begs Otabek never to come to Russia, or anywhere where Victor and Yuri are, again

“I’ll fly to you.”

Victuuri catch that part and automatically assume they’re dating aren’t they though

Now assuming knowing that it’s not a one sided relationship they kill Yurio by congratulating the both of them and being their sappy selves

Yurio stays in his room crying for hours until he gets a text from Otabek saying that he didn’t all the stuff that Victuuri said

What really got Yurio was the wink emoji he sent after

Okay but for real: where did Otabek get that motorcycle?

I’ve seen fics and posts assuming that he rented it. So I checked and it turns out you have to be over 25 to rent a motorcycle in Spain.

So like... where did he get it? Did he ship his personal bike all the way from Kazakhstan? Did he really go through all that paperwork and trouble right before the Grand Prix Final just for the exclusive purpose of wooing Yuri???

Knowing how extra everyone is in this anime I wouldn’t put it past them.

This also means there is a cursed crack AU where Otabek’s plans are ruined and he is semi stranded in Barcelona because his motorcycle was on Evergiven

thoughts i have had about yuri on ice characters and a bo burnham special that i need to get out of my head

i have given a lot of thought to my Yuri on Ice fic the last few days and i had a thought that i feel like sharing with the class. I've decided to write it in a timeline where the COVID pandemic never happens and the world didn't descend into madness in 2020. primarily because I originally came up with the idea long before that happened and I don't feel line including it in my writing. but this also means that the characters in the world would never get to experience the absolute masterpiece that is Bo Burnham's Inside. The argument could be made that they already exist in a world that Bo Burnham is not in. but I believe since Stéphane Lambiel - a real world figure skater - is seen in the last episode of yoi then Bo Burham has every right to be there too

this whole post is about the characters I am writing about, Seung-gil Lee and Otabek Altin and the versions of them that i have created. i have a specific series of events that occur in Cadence (you can read this post without having read it but it might help if you have. And same goes for Inside. It's on Netflix and I cannot recommend it enough) so anyways!!!!! if I were going to go a completely different direction with my story this is what I would have done with it

The two of them would start living together at the time the country they are in went on lockdown. It wasn't the plan but they found out that they do really well as roommates and they decide to just let the universe have this one. So, imagine this. It's the 30th May 2021 and they are scrolling through Netflix, trying to find something to watch while lounging on one of Otabek's many couches. They see a comedy special called Inside and decide to give it a shot on Otabek's recommendation - he's watched Bo Burnham with Leo and JJ a few times in the past and always enjoyed himself.

it is different from anything they have ever watched before. there is humor to it if course but there is something so deeply haunting about it as well. they aren't sure if they are enjoying themselves, they just know they don't regret their choice. eventually, Seung-gil breaks down listening to Bo's monologue in All Eyes On Me - "I began having severe panic attacks while on stage which is not a great place to uh... have them" He'll never forget his first panic attack on the ice, the way he thought he wasn't going to make it off the ice, the fact that there was no one on the side lines that knew what was happening, not ever. no one that could even see what was happening, not until Otabek came around

Otabek hugs his friend, helps to calm him down. and they hit play once they've settled again with Cho and Bear. Otabek's tears surprise them both, the choked sob that escapes his throat when they're listening to Goodbye and Bo sings, "When I'm fully irrelevant and totally broken dammit, call me up and tell me a joke" because that's his future and he has desperately tried to ignore it but he can't forever, he has to admit that eventually he'll be forgotten, lost among all the people who can still compete

I dunno, I could write a whole essay but I think I'm gonna call it there. I just had to blend these two things that I am passionate about. And then get it out of my head by typing it all out. It felt like a waste to not post it here. 💛 Thank you for coming to my TedTalk.
