“Referencing Atrina rigida, an elusive species of pen shell found in Florida's shallow coastal waters, this sculptural artist book is intended to be held and read as a celebration of nature and a humble reminder of our own fragile connection with one another.
The Mollusk is the 2018 artist's book edition from the Marjorie S. Coffey Library Endowment Residency at the George A. Smathers Libraries at the University of Florida. The book was created by Amy Richard during the semester-long residency in the fall of 2018. This project is the result of research and study in the Harold and Mary Jean Hanson Rare Book Collection in the Special and Area Studies Collections Department. Inspiration was found from a range of rare and historical books about Florida malacology (the study of mollusks), nature, poetry, book arts and livres d'artiste.
Produced as a variable edition, this sculptural artist's book is designed and made entirely of handmade paper by the artist. The shell serves as a "cover" and was produced using a paper lamination technique with abaca paper and hand processed kozo bark lace. Inside the shell between the layers of translucent "mantel" pages, pulp printed on flax paper, are the "gills", made of kozo paper.”

Photopolymer plate print folded with a classis twist fold - the text is from this post. Videos always look weird + blurry when I post ‘em here but there’s one on Insta showing how it unfolds.
ID: Two photos: one a of a negative being held up to the light so the shadow of the design against a table. The second is a print with brown ink on tan paper, which has been folded with a twist fold and is shown partially unfolded.

page 559 - birthday card to celebrate the impending nuptials of the congratulations on your baby sorry.
I am not getting food. Don't give money to these people. They could feed us if they wanted to, but all they care about is driving the costs of production as close to zero as possible, and it's going to be less than zero if they're collecting money for rations that us dungeon folk never see. A damned tragedy because some of those example meals look DELICIOUS.

There are so many wonderful, detailed art works in Hannah O’Hare Bennett’s current exhibition Recede, on view at Dunedin Fine Art Center. They are all worthy of a closer look.
Below is the artist’s statement about the work-
“From the moment we are born until we die, we are almost constantly in contact with cloth as we move through our lives. Without thinking about it, we are familiar with its varied qualities–the simplicity of white cotton, the luxury of silk velvet, the flexibility of knitting, the structure of weaving. We can see the impact of time in a piece of fabric: how it wrinkles, stains, takes repairs, unravels. Handmade paper is a kind of non-woven cloth and is in fact often made of recycled cotton or linen. It can be dyed, stitched, wrinkled, torn, and repaired much in the same way as fabric.
My work explores the expressive possibilities of these materials, which I use to deal with my fascination with time altered urban and rural landscapes. A piece of land in the Oregon outback, the brick wall of buildings in Madison, a leafy Minneapolis neighborhood, etc. are all impacted by the passing of time, actions of human beings, weather. These occurrences can be incremental or sudden, and the change they bring almost imperceptible or very radical, each change layering on top of what came before. I use that observation to inspire my work. Fabric surfaces are worked over with layers and layers of pigments, embellished with embroidery, dunked into dye, cut and torn. Paper pulp is poured, dipped, mixed with sawdust, painted, crumpled and smoothed out again. In this small human way, I am channeling the world into the objects I create.”
The exhibition closes 8/13/23.

i love graffiti. "comics and jazz are the only american art forms" you forgot graffiti. did you remember graffiti? That art form birthed in Philly and NYC in the early 70s by poor Black kids. that art form that spread all over the world and influenced so many. that's used without irony in commercials when they're trying to appeal to a "young urban" customer.
did you forget graffiti? that racism broken windows theory victim? that reach the establishment takes claiming that it's exclusively violent gang members throwing up those full-color pieces and wildstyle tags in the middle of the night outsmarting fifty security cameras because the billboard was ugly anyway. as if, even if it was, it wouldn't be impressive as all hell. risking brutality and fall damage so your art can occupy the space a gentrified condo named something like "Coluumna" took away from you. proving that despite only assholes affording to live here anymore there's still a soul beneath it. an animal with dripping stripes and teeth that go clack-clack tsssss

page 559 - a birthday card for your niece. She is 8 years old.
Ya sure? I don't know. Why a niece and what does this have to do with a birthday. I have to say it was more fun when I was making the things because just commenting on them is boring. Anyway...working on stuff. I feel like I had a work around so I controlled the blog's output, but I can't find it/can't remember. Maybe my hippocampus is getting disrupted when I pass out?
