Summary: "Wei Ying-" Lan Zhan says, stutters, "I'm sorry." And now Wei Wuxian sees it, the red rimming Lan Zhan's eyes, the rumpled edges of his blazer. There is an old, familiar urge for him to reach over, to hold Lan Zhan's hand and smooth his hair, to tell him that everything will be fine. "We're all a bit sorry about this, I think," he says instead, and finds that he means it. For Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji and everyone else in that Guanyin temple, the pain must be unbearably fresh, like skin just flayed open. But Wei Wuxian's chest had been cracked open a long time ago, his wounds licked and cauterized and sewn shut over five long years - Ever hurting, but a dull, constant ache, "It's really alright, Lan Zhan." Five years after being accused of corporate espionage and losing everything, the Guanyin Scandal breaks open and Wei Wuxian finds a familiar face at his door. Kay's comments: An @angstymdzsthoughts inspired Corporate Espionage AU and one I enjoy very much and find myself re-reading every few months because it's just that good. In which Wangxian were married in the past and had A-Yuan, but then Wei Wuxian was tried for corporate espionage against the Lans. They were forced to get divorced, Wei Wuxian went to prison and lost custody and evertyhing went horrible, but at least he had the Wens by his side and now, five years later, his innocence is finally proven and everyone has to learn how to live with that and has to decide how to go forwards. The hurt/comfort and angst is strong with this one and just perfection. Bonus shout-out for He Su and his role, really enjoyed how this character was integrated in the story! Excerpt: The moment Lan Wangji opens the door - mindful of the throngs of people and press still milling about at the end of the trials - A-Yuan runs towards Wei Ying, a blur of white and blue that hits Wei Ying's chest with a loud off and a bright laugh from his baba. For a moment, Lan Wangji is struck with the thought that the last time Wei Ying sees A-Yuan, the boy had only came up to his stomach, and not the willowy pre-teen that he is now. "Baba," A-Yuan's voice is wet and garbled, hands fisted on the stiff black of Wei Ying's blazer. His A-Yuan, who never cried when he has a fever, or when he fell down, or when Shufu's words are particularly demanding and biting. His A-Yuan buries himself on the safe cradle of Wei Ying's arms and crumbles. "Baba-" A-Yuan hiccups, then sobs back into Wei Ying's chest "I missed you so much." "Oh, my little radish," Wei Ying is crying too, unabashed and unashamed, fingers gentle on A-Yuan's hair, smoothing the unseen creases of their son's white shirt, "Baba has missed you so much too. If your A-Die's family is alright with it, then we'll work out something so we can meet regularly, alright? Would you like that, A-Yuan?" Lan Wangji barely manages to snap out of his own head, something caving in painfully inside him at Wei Ying's words. For Wei Ying to think that he won't be allowed, even now, to meet his son - But hadn't Lan Wangji sat by, all those five years when Wei Ying and A-Yuan was denied each other? Hadn't he agreed with Uncle and Brother that it would be safer, simpler, kinder for A-Yuan and the Lan family to keep Wei Ying away from their lives?

I don't think we talk about xiyao exes to lovers enough. I understand that in canon the "breakup" ended with death and imo it was never going to end any other way (I have a lot of feelings about how jgy is doomed from the start) but even in aus where survival is an option I barely ever see their full potential realized. The fact that there is this heartbreaking gap that is between them now, and yet that, despite it all, they can't stop loving each other. When you have drama this good, why is the conflict relegated to outside threats and we end up with little to no exploration of internal strife, of the fact that these guys have been living a domestic lie for a decade (I cannot stress this enough, the amount of parralels between xiyao and jgy's marriage to qin su are staggering.)

And let me be clear I will NEVER begrudge anyone their hurt/comfort and wanting their faves who are denied happiness and peace at every turn to find it. god knows I need that sometimes. Or even the less healthy but so emotionally devastating fics where the caring isn't good, and it doesn't fix anything- might only make things worse, actually- and xichen ends up recreating his father's fate. I love all of those things. But. Man. This divorce was over 11 years in the making it should take AT LEAST that long to resolve. What do you do when the person you trusted the most lied to you for years? What do you do when the only person who's ever believed in you loses that faith so completely they'd hurt you over a lie without hesitation? I need me some xiyao who try to get over each other for 20 years and fail. I need them to meet after not seeing each other for years and have it hurt like no time has passed at all. I need arguments where no one raises their voice but that feel like a screaming match anyway. Do you see my vision?? Do you see what we could have?

[What if Lan Xichen had killed himself at Guanyin Temple?]

There was a mountain of blood spilling behind them. Sliding down the walls and filling the Temple to the brim.

Xichen felt like he was drowning.

Gasping for breath as his lungs closed up. And then, through it all, he could feel the phantom hands of his dead, sworn brother closing in around his neck. He had killed him. Not literally, but he had opened the doors for his murder.

And still, he found himself at a stalemate. Looking into Jin Guangyao's eyes, he couldn't help but compare them to the sparkling excitement he'd seen when he first met him.

Even through all their ups and downs, Jin Guangyao had been a presence he hadn't known he desperately craved.

Now his eyes were distraught, glued to Xichen's, and in them, Xichen could see the wary tiredness. The betrayal. The slightest tinge of contempt. Those eyes had never stared at him like this. He was always met with the brightest appreciation. Although recently, there had been walls building in those eyes. Brick by brick. And Lan Xichen had watched them construct. But he had said nothing.

Now with Shuoyue wedged between himself and the man he had stood beside countless times, Xichen wished for just a moment. Just a second to go back and see where it had all fallen. Surely, not every moment had been riddled with lies and facades. Surely, what was exchanged between him and A-Yao had been real at some point. Surely, A-Yao wouldn't have used him so baselessly. Once again, Lan Xichen found himself grappling for something. For a reason. For an explanation.

But the words Jin Guangyao uttered as he took a step towards Xichen, lodging Shuoyue deeper into his chest, ripped the cloth tied so firmly around Xichen's eyes that he had no choice but to accept.

He breathed, rasping, "But I've never even thought of harming you!"

Xichen could feel the hands circling his neck squeeze. Even though they were surrounded by others, it felt like only the two were in the Temple. The voices of his elders echoed off the walls, screaming in disoriented waves, pushing at his back. Xichen could hear the sounds of everything he knew, cracking one by one. He was being torn anew.

It was no lie that Jin Guangyao had protected him just as he had protected Jin Guangyao. Truly, the man who stood by his side and patched up his wounds was A-Yao. It had been A-Yao since that fateful encounter of theirs.

Jin Guangyao drew back, and Shuoyue pulled out of his chest.

Still, Xichen clutched onto him, not letting him pull away. He could vaguely hear the protests from behind him. Could scarcely make out the sounds of Wei Wuxian's horror and of his brother summoning Bichen.

Xichen supposed this was it. Even in the end, he couldn't really leave A-Yao's side. He did promise an oath to him and Nie Mingjue, and while Jin Guangyao had rumpled that promise and spat on it, Lan Xichen cherished it. And as the drops of blood fell against Nie Mingjue's coffin, as a hand emerged and held tightly onto Jin Guangyao's neck, Lan Xichen briefly felt relief. To die now, alongside Jin Guangyao, to die by Nie Mingjue's hand…Lan Xichen thought it justice.

He thought it deserved.

He felt his body relax for the first time since stepping into the Temple. Felt for just a moment that everything had fallen into place.

There was a hand pushing him away at the last minute. His eyes flung open, a scream at the tip of his lips. He could feel Wangji's hands around him, but he didn't want this.

He had accepted his fate, so why was he denied it? How could he live now? Xichen felt more than acknowledged what he was doing. He felt his body stagger forwards and could feel the pull on his arm as his brother pushed him to leave.

The Temple was falling.

Jin Guangyao and Nie Mingjue would be buried with it. How could Lan Xichen stand under the light while they were smothered beneath the darkness?

In a swift movement, he brought Shuoyue to his throat.

The blade was warm from Jin Guangyao's blood. As he felt his skin break, his only thought was to see the dimpled smile and feel the thrum of contentment again.

Lan Wangji watched in silent rage as his brother fell apart at the words of confession uttered by Jin Guangyao. He knew of his brother's sheer will to trust Jin Guangyao. Knew that his brother must be feeling deceived beyond compare. But even then, Lan Wangji could do little.

He felt his body freeze when Jin Guangyao pulled Xichen towards Nie Mingjue's coffin.

He had called for Bichen but knew it would be useless to attack now. And while his hands shook and his heart ratted against his ribs, he hadn't moved. He couldn't move.

Lan Wangji could feel the whips of uselessness descend upon him. Slithering down his spine and curling around his head. He was grateful, for a second, when Jin Guangyao pushed Xichen away. Despite his hatred for the man, Lan Wangji felt comfort in having his brother near himself, rather than the devil incarnate.

Lan Wangji curled his hands around his brother's arm, intent on getting them out of the falling Temple. He had been focused on ensuring Wei Wuxian was also by his side that he had failed to notice his brother's grip on Shuoyue. He had been a second too late by the time he thought to move his brother's hand away from the sword.

His stomach had a scraping sensation, almost like a hoard of mice were trying to claw their way out. Lan Wangji struggled to breathe. His insides were boiling with a nauseating feeling, eating him up and chipping away at the barrier inside his mind.

His body convulsed forwards. Arms wrapping around the dying body of his brother. There was a pull at his robes as he was pushed outside. The Temple fell right as he was out on the steps. He couldn't hear much. Or see much. His pristine white robes were marred with dirt and blood. So much blood.

"Lan Zhan! Lan Zhan, hey, breathe, please. Breathe with me." There were frantic hands around him pushing his face up, and he stared into the eyes of his beloved.

They were wet. Lan Wangji let out a small breath but it became a sob. He collapsed into Wei Wuxian's arms, his brother's head resting in his lap.

"Why?"

He couldn't breathe. He couldn't think. A rope was tightening around his lungs, which worked to squeeze him slowly, and he scraped against his chest, trying to get some air down.

He had cried once when he was stuck in the cave with the knowledge that his father was dying. He had cried once when he realised the doors would never open again. He had cried the hardest when he had lost the one person who had brought him life. And throughout it all. His brother had been standing in the background. Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji.

He could see the scenes play before him. The ones of his brother and him when they were young. Silently whispering in the back gardens of Cloud Recess as they found small flowers to collect for their mother. Wide-eyed kids as they learnt to cultivate together. Holding each other when one got nicked and sharing small smiles that no one else understood.

Lan Wangji had lost many things. But never had he envisioned a world where he would lose his only pillar. On the steps of Guanyin Temple, a boy cried with his heart out, held in his lover's arms, who silently shed tears with him.

Life had been cruel to the Lan brothers, and it seemed it had yet to spare them any comfort.

“You like video games, don’t you?” Xichen asks. They haven’t played many games, not since Mingjue saw A-Yao do something in a Sims game that he won’t elaborate to Xichen, but resulted in the aforementioned disastrous subscription to Betterhelp.

Meng Yao nods, smiling a bit nervously with his dimples on full display. As always, Xichen can’t really tell what he’s thinking. He simply leads A-Yao over to the computer and gestures to it. “Here, I found this. It’s called Untitled Goose Game. I figured you’d like to give it a try.”

It's a lovely morning in the village, and you are a horrible goose, reads the text on the screen.

Sometimes a goose can save your relationship.

I worked on an animation lately at work (because boss asked me to) and here is the result of today’s work :) xiyao walking side by side. Im still struggling with CPS interface and took me an hour to find how to copy paste frames xD but im glad i managed to do this much so i could show you all and also be right on time for someone’s birthday ;)

Hell yes. I have been thinking about this for about 3 years, but never wrote any of it. I just opened a doc and jotted down this snippet for you! Hopefully someday I can turn this into a whole fic.

I give you 500 words of stranded/traumatized Jaeger pilot Lan Xichen in post-apocalyptic Yunping:

“Meng Yao… what are you doing?"

“The Kaiju won’t wait for us to run,” Meng Yao replies without taking his eyes off his work, “according to my scanner it is only 160 minutes out, unless it changes course.” The scanner in question looks like it was salvaged from parts, but it is beeping in a very believable, alarming manner. “We cannot evacuate the town in time, and we are unlikely to save ourselves even if we start running very, very fast. We must fight back.” He dives back elbows-deep in the cockpit with feverish focus, ripping and soldering cords like he knows what each of them does. Lan Xichen is once again overtaken by awe and instinctual faith in this small, brilliant human being.

When Lan Xichen had washed ashore near the refugee encampment, banged up and near-catatonic from the loss of his brother, he had never imagined someone with Jaeger training would be hiding in these backwater ruins. His savior was one Meng Yao of Yunping, a wiry young man in ripped overalls, with too many tools hanging off his belt and too-hard eyes in a gentle round face. As it turned out, his clever mind could rival Lan Xichen’s own AI navigator - he’d taken only a few days to assess the damage to his Jaeger and write up a repair plan.

Twin Jade was stretched out on the beach, looking like a sleeping giant half-covered in brine. She was not in a bad state overall, save for the smashed cockpit - but she was down one co-pilot, so Lan Xichen had given up on resurrecting her altogether. Meng Yao had not.

While Lan Xichen consumed himself with worries over Wangji’s fate and his lack of communications, his savior worked day and night to get both pilot and Jaeger back to some semblance of functionality. (Lan Xichen paused to chuckle over the mental comparison of hot soup for himself and scrapyard parts for Twin Jade, both sourced by Meng Yao with unfailing efficiency).

“The repairs are only temporary," Meng Yao's voice brings him back to the present emergency. "But I can essentially jumpstart her for long enough to keep it running in emergency mode for a couple of hours. I’ll need you to do most of the fighting while I keep an eye on the systems.”

“You want to pilot with me?” Lan Xichen’s eyes widen.

“Well, you can’t pilot by yourself, can you?” Meng Yao chuckled nervously, without looking back from the console. “And even if you could, your leg is broken.”

“Drifting can be very dangerous if you have never…”

“I have trained before,” Meng Yao interrupts him. “I can pilot, Lan Xichen. I can,” he swears, pushing his bangs out of his eyes frantically. “I know I am asking a lot, but–”

“I trust you,” Lan Xichen says unthinkingly, reaching out to wipe a smear of grease from his cheek. “I only… wish to apologize for what you may see in the drift.”

Meng Yao only laughs, shaking his head. His eyes are avoidant. “Likewise.”

Neither of them paused to doubt whether they'd be compatible. That much was a given.

Lan Xichen enters the repaired cockpit, leaning all of his weight on Meng Yao. He plugs in with slightly-shaking hands.

It is terrifying to let Meng Yao see all of what you are. But he is scared, too. He is, you realize, more afraid than you are. As if his secrets could be any worse than the monstrosity inside yourself. You smile at him with all the warmth you can muster, smiling past the fears in your head. You suddenly want to see him more than anything.

Since I've got some new followers over the past couple of days (who knew what branching out from Xiyao would do for my reputation!), I'll once again add the disclaimer that I write MDZS meta and not CQL meta. I'm aware that in CQL, WWX is characterised somewhat differently. I have thoughts on that too, but I'm not immersed enough in CQL to commit to sharing them publicly.

Since WWX is the main character and appears in almost every scene, I won't attempt to write a thesis statement on him. (You cannot afford my hourly rate.) Instead I've decided to focus on an aspect of WWX that I feel is often overlooked or sanitised. That is to say:

WWX is extremely annoying.

He's not just irritating, or overly exuberant, or a touch too arrogant. He is infuriatingly obnoxious.

Obviously WWX is also brave and often well-meaning. He loves deeply, even if he consistently lets down the people who care about him. He's strong-willed enough to abide by his own sense of morality in the face of overwhelming disapproval and danger, and arrogant enough to make unilateral decisions when it would be better for all concerned if he took a step back. He's bad at big picture thinking and rarely considers the full ramifications of his actions, but he's also incredibly adept at getting out of scrapes, and he has an admirable if also somewhat depressing ability to shrug off pain and suffering that is the result of his difficult days on the streets and his mistreatment by YZY.

And he's obnoxious.

I do think it often gets forgotten, because Wangxian is intended to be a love story and it's much more tempting to write sweeping romance and charming banter than hark back to all the canonical moments in which characters, including LWJ, genuinely want to throttle him to death.

He never shuts up! He's constantly laughing far too loudly and for too long. He's the sort of person who thinks it's funny to pull the rug out from under someone in a conversation so they end up discomfited and embarrassed. I fully understand that a large part of his hectoring LWJ is a precursor to his later romantic interest and is in line with his flirtation style, but the fact remains that he goads LWJ beyond the point of endurance on multiple occasions. LWJ just happens to be a weird dude who's really into it.

A good example of what I mean is when Wangxian encounter each other at Phoenix Mountain. WWX asks LWJ if he's ever kissed someone, then proceeds to speculate that LWJ has never been kissed and will never be kissed. LWJ doesn't seem to mind this at first, and only becomes angered when WWX lies about having been kissed before himself (oh LWJ), but it's important to remember that WWX has no idea that LWJ has any interest in him whatsoever. From WWX's perspective, he's just having fun belittling someone else over a topic that for most young people is a sensitive one. I don't want to oversell this moment and claim that it's bullying, actually, but I do want to use it to highlight that WWX is not always a considerate person and this type of behaviour is teeth-achingly thoughtless and cringeworthy.

I could go on, but if you pick any given scene including WWX you're likely to see dialogue in which he's being actively annoying to other characters, intentionally or otherwise. This isn't an attack on him, just an observation that in order to write him in a canon consistent manner he should be not just witty and chatty in a way where other characters simply roll their eyes and keep going. He should genuinely actually aggravate them and it should have consequences within the scene. Characters such as JC and WQ care about WWX but also find him infuriating, and that's with good reason—never mind the juniors, whom WWX takes pleasure in messing with. There are many characters who feel great respect and affection for WWX, and every single one of them also regularly feels deep frustration and irritation towards him too. There should be some meat on the bones of any back and forth between them.

is jgy different in the books than in the untamed? sorry if u haven’t read them im kind of just assuming u have even tho i haven’t lol but i was wondering if his characterization has any major differences like how wwx in novel vs untamed they sort of sanitize him and take away any culpability and honestly some of his edge. just curious if there’s any major differences in his characterization between the two

I'm not the best person to answer because I've only read the first two volumes of MDZS. Short answer: Yes, he is different, and in fact gets the reverse of WWX's treatment: Drama JGY is more overtly villainous than Novel JGY. However, IMO it's a little more complicated than that!

(Novel enjoyers, please chime in if I'm forgetting or misrepresenting anything.)

A lot of JGY fans greatly prefer the novel and feel that The Untamed did him dirty, because a lot of the show's plot changes that make WWX look better make JGY look worse. Jin Zixuan's death is the most glaring one: in the novel, WWX really does lose control of WN because he overestimates his abilities, and it's a tragic accident. JGY and SMS's implied involvement in the Massacre at Nightless City also doesn't happen in the novel; that, too, was a devastated WWX wreaking havoc and/or losing control. The novel also establishes that JGY is subject to abuse within Jinlintai, so there's an element of duress that one can read into his actions under JGS. Novel NMJ behaves more aggressively towards JGY than he does in the show, so his murder doesn't have the same tinge of malice. (The novel timeline also has JGY and LXC meeting before JGY and NMJ, all during Sunshot, so there's that.) Additionally, the novel tells us that JGY is genuinely a very good leader once he's Chief Cultivator and has implemented policies that have improved the lives of regular people and contributed to political stability. We're also told more about his childhood and his love for his mother, and we learn that his relationship with QS is a tragic love story (he doesn't know they're related until after she's pregnant) rather than something he went through with anyway. So in the novel, he's got a lot of positive things going for him that censorship didn't allow to carry over into the show for fear of having too much moral ambiguity.

HOWEVER!!!

The thing about the novel (and why I don't vibe with it as much) is that it's very much WWX's story, whereas The Untamed spends wayyyyy more time with its supporting cast. You might've noticed that I said the word "told" a lot in the above paragraph, because... well, that's what happens. We're told things about JGY, but we don't see him as much, especially since the novel is focused on the post-timeskip era with the stuff in the past coming through non-linear flashbacks. You don't get to see Meng Yao being Just A Little Guy very much before he becomes the Kitten Thinks About Nothing But Murder All Day meme. Now, you also don't hear dramatic music telegraphing HEY!!! HEY!! VILLAINY IS AFOOT!! HEY!!! every time JGY does literally anything, but you do have everything filtered through WWX's unreliable narrator monologue, and he is out there saying some truly wild shit. (You also get less Xiyao. Like, it's there if you want it to be, but The Untamed really went all-in on that.)

For me, the show works better, because I am a sucker for corruption arcs where you see glimpses of the character before they start the atrocities. Seeing him be Just A Little Guy making the saddest meow meow faces when people were mean to him kept me from totally losing sympathy for/interest in him once things start getting squicky, because I had evidence that he wasn't always like that. Meanwhile, JGY's first big scene in the novel is the confrontation with QS (which already makes my skin crawl and is somehow WORSE in novel form), and I was just like "wow, this guy sucks" even though I knew the story and all the extenuating circumstances already. For others, the novel works better, because "first impressions and society's opinion are unreliable" is a major theme, so the reverse reveal combined with the fact that he demonstrably tries to improve people's lives as a leader is less expected and more satisfying.

So yeah! JGY is different, but the ways in which he is different are due to storytelling methods as well as to plot changes!

About how wwx is the 'problem' in the yunmeng bros reconciliation I completely agree and that's why I think wangxian works so well in canon : none of wwx's past actions have hurt personally lwj, so wwx doesn't feel very guilty. Wangxian is true love but there's a canon where wwx performs the core's transfer on lwj plus lxc died at nightless city plus lqr died during the war = so now lwj is a lonely sect leader = lwj loves wwx in every universe! but I really don't know how in this they can have their happy ending

GOD this is such a great point.

i've been working on a long meta that has accidentally taken a year because i was waiting for all of the 7 seas translation to come out about the difference between the show's "In a person's life he needs to learn to say two things-- thank you, and sorry" vs the book's "Between you and me there is no need for thank you and sorry" and I think you've actually just nailed it?

one of the things that typifies MXTX love interests is that they're simply willing to go farther for one another than anyone else in that person's life. this always feels especially clear in TGCF: mu qing and feng xin trample well past the boundaries any normal person would hold when it comes to standing by xie lian, but at the end of the day, things simply go too far and they have to go (and even then, intend to come back!!)-- whereas hua cheng literally never gives up, even in death. it is a level of devotion that xie lian is lucky to have, but not actually something that can be expected of most people, which is something i feel the narrative acknowledges.

the same thing can be said of jiang cheng and lan wangji in regards to wei wuxian, or even the contrast between wangxian and xiyao. jiang cheng takes his support of wei wuxian as far as he possibly can, and much farther than the wider world realizes-- and frankly, much farther than even wei wuxian realizes (why do you think he still had chenqing a) at all or b) literally in his pocket you absolute goober). lan wangji is able to go much farther, partly because of his personality but partly because of the pure luck and happenstance of his social position. he isn't constrained by the same things jiang cheng is, he doesn't have the same demands to balance. and, of course, he doesn't share the complex familial baggage and all the other history that leads to wei wuxian and jiang cheng hurting each other so much.

maybe "between you and me, there's no need for thank you and sorry" isn't really a "moral" (for lack of a better word) in the same way as CQL's thank you and sorry, but just a statement of fact, and an acknowledgement of coincidence and luck. they share a history that means they don't need to thank or apologize the way they both do to others in their lives, and that's part of what makes the relationship feel so good and so special.

CQL would need to change this because of the changes they made to the pacing of wangxian's relationship. because they are able to recognize and partially acknowledge how they feel about each other much earlier, they actually are able to hurt one another with the same depth as jiang cheng and wei wuxian. this means that it's now got to be a relationship where such apologies are necessary-- though as you say, not with as much lingering guilt as there would be with something like a core transfer. the words have to be said (and thus a new "moral" about what those phrases mean), but all that's needed are words: there's no permanently lingering baggage to weigh down the relationship forever and make it, as you suggest and as i totally agree, impossible.
