Spring, no wait, winter again?
Spent some time in the garden with my old 105mm macro lens before the storm came in with wind and snow. I can’t remember the last time we have had such a warm winter, it was 65 degrees today.
I never resist time to play when it's warm outside, especially barefoot in the garden. This year’s goal is to bring the garden back to it’s glory. The last 3 years I let it go. It was not because lack of time, but because of inspiration. The thing that happened in 2020 killed all motivation to do anything. This year will be different.
I hope to share more of my garden’s journey back to where it was and even better. If you want to learn more about gardening and even want to join the conversation, join my facebook group, Rochester Gardeners.

Now the pears are in bloom and after them the apple blossoms, the sweetest of all!
Then the tulip poplars and black locusts and way in the distance in June the catalpas. So much beauty on the way!

Citizen Science and Contributing To Scientific Endeavor When You're Not "A Scientist"
Comments on some of my posts about science and misinformation express frustration with scientific establishments, and want to see more accessibility and attention given to amateurs participating in the scientific process and having their scientific voices heard.
If being involved in the creation of knowledge and discovery is something important to you, that's something I strongly encourage! It's absolutely possible. Amateur researchers with a passion and an eye for detail have made some fantastic discoveries - but what is often glossed over in stories like these are the years of work, the patient dedication, and the collaboration with university researchers that often underlie such discoveries.
The search for truth and information and the passion for science is present in a lot of people who aren't official "scientists" - curiosity is natural! And if participation in scientific observation, hypothesizing, experimentation, and discovering new things about the world is important to you, there are lots of ways to go about contributing - and the new year is a great time to start.
What are you interested in?
Ecology
Observing the world around you is for everybody. Getting invested in the environment of your hometown is for everybody. And, as the Mythbusters famously said,
Tumblr media
Some ideas for a local ecology project:
Record the temperature outside every day at the same time - at sunrise, or noon, or sunset, or midnight. Depending on where you are, the local weather recording station may be miles away or on top of a mountain - measure the temperature yourself and compare it each day to what your app says. When is it accurate? When isn't it?
Record the weather every day. How much precipitation? What time of day? What kind?
Record what animals you see every day, where, when, and how many. Or choose a specific animal, like birds, or bees on flowers, or turtles or frogs in a local pond, or whiptail lizards vs. invasive house geckos, and record the numbers you see each day.
Record when in the year you see the first, or last, of a plant or animal. When the crocuses sprout, when the buds appear on the maple trees, when you see the first clover flowers or prickly pear flowers, when the first robin comes out or the first lizards come out of hibernation.
If you have an outdoor cat or a free-roaming dog, attach a GoPro or similar small camera to its collar to see where it goes and what it does.
Identify the plants growing in your neighborhood, and check in on it regularly to keep track of how each one fares in different weather conditions, or if any animals particularly like or don't like to eat it.
Bulk order some test strips, then take a small sample of soil from a local park or water from a local waterway each weekend and test them for PH, lead, chemicals, or whatever. See if it changes over the year, or after a heavy rainfall, or during drought.
Take a photo of the same spot every day for a year.
Linguistics
The study of how people use language! Everybody uses language in some capacity.
Do you have any small children near you? Talk to them! Record how they pronounce things and what they call new (or even familiar) concepts. Look for patterns.
Ask people you know if "dog" and "blog" rhyme, or if "Alohop" is a good pun for a pineapple beer. My family gets ENDLESS amounts of mileage out of this one with each other. Ask people you know questions about how they pronounce things, or what they call things. Make maps of dialectical differences between generations, neighborhoods, etc. Track linguistic shifts in the modern world.
History
Everyone and everywhere has a history, and accurate history is pressingly relevant always.
See if you have a local historical society, library archive, or history museum that is looking for volunteers to transcribe or translate collections.
Get elbow-deep in local archives. You likely have some sort of local archive near you that has not been fully digitized. Go in with a topic you want to learn about - Black families, Jewish communities, how your hometown transferred from Indigenous hands to settler ones, women who owned their own businesses, immigration, inter-racial relationships, sports, ice harvesting, farming practices, contemporary opinions on a major world history event that now seems so inevitable, sports and people's reactions to sports - and read everything in newspapers, wills, deeds, photographs, or other available records about your topic of choice. See if you can find connections that you haven't seen anyone else talking about.
These are just some things that occur to me immediately as something that anyone can do, if you're sufficiently interested in a question and want to discover more about it. The more local your topic, the less likely anyone has a solid answer to whatever you're wondering - and the more immediately relevant to the people around you your discoveries may be!
Combining it with a New Year's Resolution can also get you more motivated to do the things you want to do. Is your resolution to get more exercise? Take a brisk walk each morning and take a picture of the same area every day for a year. Take a walk every weekend down to the lake and count the turtles and frogs you see. Is your resolution to keep a daily diary For Real This Time? If nothing else, resolve to write down the weather and precipitation each day! Do you want to volunteer more or meet new people? Look for citizen science or local history groups! Feeling like you're working toward something Real is a great motivator.
Henry David Thoreau's detailed descriptions of the nature each day around Walden Pond in the 1840s provides a valuable benchmark for modern ecologists to compare environmental and climatic changes since then on a granular level. Silly rhyming poems and idiosyncratic spellings in letters and diaries help linguists track dialectical and pronunciation changes across time. Amateur science is great and valuable! We all can have a part in understanding and paying deeper attention to the world around us, if we want to.

A Bullfinch Feathursday
The colorful Eurasian Bullfinch (Pyrrhula pyrrhula) is a strikingly beautiful bird to encounter. but it is not always the most welcome in orchards because of their preferred foods: berries and the buds of fruit trees. These images are from paintings by the British bird artist Terance James Bond as reproduced in our folio volume Birds, The Paintings of Terance James Bond, published in Cambridge, England, by the Lutterworth Press in 1988. Of the Bullfinch and its depiction, Bond writes:
Bullfinches and fruit trees do not mix, or rather they do, and that is the problem. . . . Bullfinches love buds. The name Bullfinch is probably a corruption of the words bud finch. . . . A pair of these lovely little birds can cause havoc on a fruit tree in a very short time, and several pairs over a period of a couple of weeks can destroy the potential fruit crop of an entire orchard. [B]y illustrating the species in a setting of pear blossoms, I would seem to be confirming the Bullfinch's regrettable behaviour. . . . The bright pink breast of the cock is so vivid and of such an isolated pigment range, that there is very little that can be utilised as background without a terrible clash of colour. White is the obvious choice and so is pale green, both are tints that harmonise well with pink. So in the end I chose the bird's favourite tree as the basis of composition.

ghoul element perfume associations!
i've done a few scent association lists for individual ghouls, and i thought it would be fun to do one for elements instead! it's a little more general, which lets me include perfume that i really like but that don't fit any of the ghouls exactly. as always, i would love your feedback!!
Usual warning: This might look weird on mobile, but it should be good on desktop. Apologies, I'd fix it if I knew how.
Earth: Dense, earthy, bitter, green scents reminiscent of forests, gardens, and ruins halfway reclaimed by nature.
Notes: wood, vetiver, greenery, moss, soil, fruit, rose, stone, fungus
Rose Fantôme - LVNEA
“Rose Fantôme breathes not the fresh blooming rose but the one that has been cut, left and forgotten. Now one with its surroundings, it blends with the scents of dried grass and lichen, hay, and dirt.”
porcelain roses, immortelle, dried hay, graveyard soil, cepes, oakmoss, oakwood
Duende - Fantôme
“The smell of being lost in an enchanted forest.”
oakmoss, cedar, fir, resinous labdanum, benzoin, tree sap, wild violets, lilac
(i have this one, it's forest-y but also pretty light for a forest perfume. definitely a summery, magical forest smell)
Holy Oak - LVNEA
“Holy Oak alchemizes the aromas of deep, damp oakwood and the dry warmth of cedar to evoke the sound, sight, and smell of a well-worn cabin woodframe creaking against the weight of tempestuous rainfall as it begins to slow.”
galbanum, cedar leaf, petrichor, frankincense, cedarwood, oakwood, oakmoss
Mount Auburn - Little & Grim
“A dizzying array of all the flora that buds in Massachusetts. Fragrant, fruity blossoms and towering trees shading gentle, winding paths.”
fresh raspberry, melon, honeysuckle, blooming lilac, wisteria, spruce
Love Among the Ruins - Alkemia
“An ancient ruin of fallen stonework covered with lichen and tangles of flowering vines slowly disintegrating/returning to nature.”
stone ruins, lichen, tangles of flowering vines
Rochester - Fantôme
rich earth, crisp fallen leaves, sweet tobacco, a hint of patchouli, garden tomato, newly ripened autumn gourds
Vert Sur Le Vert - Alkemia

Notes: florals, musk, fruit, cold air, dust, sugar, honey, ozone
Lilacs Along the Winding Drive - Alkemia
fresh lilacs, a gentle breeze after a light spring rain, a dusty pebbled driveway, a slightly rusty porch swing, and a small handful of late blooming violets
Hummingbird - Zoologist
“This diaphanous scent alights upon you in a pastel bouquet of honeysuckle, mimosa, lilac and peonies, with just the lightest dusting of natural sugars found in pear, cherry and honey. A finishing dollop of velvety whipped cream melds the tantalizing notes, completing this irresistible and opulent perfume.”
apple, cherry, citrus, lilac, muguet, plum, rose, violet leaf, honey, honeysuckle, mimosa, peony, tulip, ylang, amber, coumarin, cream, moss, musks, sandalwood, white woods
Frost Flowers - LVNEA

Thundersnow - Fyrinnae
“On rare occasions within a system cold enough to produce ground level snow, the conditions are favorable for the right lifting and instability required to also produce lightning.”

Mama Gein - Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab
crushed baby’s breath dusted with baby powder

Fire: Warm, heavy, lingering, spicy scents. Some fire ghouls smell like smoke and fire, but others smell like heat, metal, or spices.
Notes: smoke, incense, spices, metal, patchouli, wood
Paimon - Fantôme
“This is a warm, regal scent conjuring an endless sea of sand with the hint of an oasis of coconut and dark vanilla carried on a warm desert wind. Golden frankincense, black amber, and myrrh stir under the endless dunes of hot sand, grounding the bright, golden notes that shine under the unrelenting sun.”

Dragonfly - Zoologist
“Giant lotus pads part to make way for buds that pierce the surface of the jade green pond. They raise their faces to the sun, their delicate fragrance floating around them. In the shadow of the flowers, tiny dragonfly nymphs also emerge from the shallows. They spread their fragile wings and shyly take flight, ready to explore a world beyond the water.”

pink pepper, solar salicylate, incense, black ink accord, salty accord, opoponax, ambergris, benzoin, musk
Seahorse - Zoologist
“Balmy sunlight trips across foamy turquoise waves, sending rippling haloes onto the coral below. On the lagoon floor, anemone and seaweed sway in unison, limbs pumping to the rhythm of the current. Hovering among the coral branches, a group of seahorses gazes shyly on.”
guatemala cardamom, fennel, ambrette absolute, clary sage, tuberose, neroli, algae absolute, vetiver, ambergris accord
Quintessence: Heavy, warm, creamy scents. Quintessence ghouls tend to smell comforting, and their scents reflect human creations much more often than other ghouls’.

“Where that grows, anything else can’t,” said Stanley’s Greenhouse manager Abby Stanley-Jerrolds.The Bradford Pear Tree is native to Asian countries and have proven to be an invasive species here in the U.S.“They choke out native species in the landscape. They choke out any other species in the landscape. You think of Kudzu right? Like those are problems,” said Stanley-Jerrolds.
These trees grow quickly and spread rapidly, crowding out native plants, trees, and grasses.
-----
I DETEST Bradford pear trees! They are so ubiquitous that they now self-propagate, and have have completely drowned out the native dogwoods and redbuds trees that used to grow wild. Please don't ever plant these!

Birds of a feather.
Tumblr media
Here are three house finches (Haemorhous mexicanus) in a tree. They arrived together for breakfast.
"House Finches eat almost exclusively plant materials, including seeds, buds and fruits. Wild foods include wild mustard seeds, knotweed, thistle, mulberry, poison oak, cactus, and many other species. In orchards, House Finches eat cherries, apricots, peaches, pears, plums, strawberries, blackberries, and figs. At feeders they eat black oil sunflower over the larger, striped sunflower seeds, millet, and milo." - allaboutbirds.org

Steam Patch Notes Version 1.2.11
BIG UPDATES
Freya now sells a cooking pot so you can cook on the ranch.
Fixed 'invisible walls' on the ranch after clearing certain types of debris or placing fenceposts.
Fixed broken cooking tutorials when loading saves from before 1.1.18.
KNOWN ISSUES
Rarely, the game day resets to 0, causing the new-game fences and sleeping patches to spawn on top of your ranch. We're still trying to reproduce this but it's top of our list to fix.
Other updates under the cut!
Made steeds more obedient after dismounting. They'll now always resume following if they were following before, and they won't run away when dismounted on the ranch.
Award certain achievements retroactively in case they were missed by playing the demo.
Increased the respawn chance of logs which drop forest wood.
Harvest boosts now apply while mounted.
Stamina now slowly regenerates when sitting.
Changed the flute prompt layout used for controllers to make it more intuitive.
Fixed biome tiles on the ranch not updating/erasing correctly when modifying pens.
Biome tiles will no longer overwrite path tiles.
Mari's dino records are now sorted by species.
All 'weekday' dinos are now 'rare'. Previously most were 'uncommon' but one was 'ultra rare', which was incorrect.
Dinos discovered via tracking will now have an alert (!) to make them easier to spot.
Dino notes can no longer be so long the text becomes unreadably small.
Fixed Lucky only accepting 0 star mangoes for the 'cheer Lucky up with a mango' task.
Fixed Psittacosaurus getting stuck when interacting with cushions on the ranch.
Fixed Coelophysis cheeks staying visible when they sleep in an upgraded sleeping patch.
Fixed small dinos stealing extra seeds (one from each stack) from seed hubs.
Fixed an error causing dinos to be able to spray water infinitely outside of the ranch.
Fixed not being able to spray water outside of the ranch, except by dismounting.
Fixed ranch storage filters behaving strangely after adding items to the 'all' category.
Fixed Owynn's legs moving strangely after skipping quickly through dialog when meeting him and Mari on day 1.
Fixed errors and lost items when sweeping a trough or hub with the broom.
Fixed soil disappearing and/or duplicate seeds if you interrupted a small dino at work.
Dino tilling fixes - hopefully you should no longer be able to escape the ranch!
Fixed sometimes being unable to study desert dinos for a town board job.
Fixed a crash when loading into the ranch if the entire thing is one huge pen.
Improved performance when placing various objects on the ranch or picking them up.
Fixed infinitely respawning tutorial saddle when loading older saves.
Fixed distant LODs of the sandstone wall reverting to normal grey stone.
Fixed an exploit to get infinite items from compost machines and windmills.
Owynn's first visit dialogue is now triggered by interaction with him at his house rather than when you get near.
Changed Pippin's dino companion icon in the journal to the Dimetrodon.
Fixed the pear tree giving the player a pear rather than a sprout when dug up.
Fixed various dino toys where the dino was unable to reach the interaction point.
Fixed dino animations getting stuck if they were interrupted while interacting with a toy.
Fixed various misplaced characters in the Swamp Feast cutscene.
Marlo no longer appears near his house on Sundays while you're meant to be finding him.
The taming tutorial can no longer occur on Mari's budding day or a festival.
Slightly changed the Oviraptor friend call so it doesn't overlap with the 'follow' command.
Disallow stack splitting on non-draggable inventories (e.g. in cooking).
Improved the ranch house upgrade cutscene.
Fixed the "Memory of Mac" quest only taking 4 corn rather than 5.
Fixed floating items on a Wisdom Day picnic table.
Fixed Triassea Picnic food pile donations being lost when loading an autosave.
Fixed being able to access Mari's dino storage from anywhere, which either spawns the dinosaur far away, or causes an error (if you're not in Veridian Valley).
Fixed the Wisdom Day Master achievement not being progressive.
Fixed several typos and misattributed lines in dialog and the quest log.
Many other things too minor to mention.

Ochne, Mickey mouse's plant
This plant, the ochne, resembles the cartoon hero, Mickey Mouse. The two red sepals represent the big ears and the two traces of the berries on the red calyx form the eyes of the little mouse.
In English it is also called the "bird's eye plant". Its botanical name, Ochna thomasiana,  comes from the Greek word Ochne meaning wild pear because the leaves of this plant resemble those of this pear tree.
The ochna, native to tropical Africa, is very popular as an ornamental plant in some tropical regions because on the plant you can see yellow and red flowers, colorful buds and green and black berries simultaneously. Quite a show!
The ochne is an evergreen shrub 1.5 to 2.5 m in height with slow growth. Its leathery dark green and shiny foliage is brightened by the coppery green color of the young leaves. The flowers, 4 to 5 cm in diameter, have five very bright yellow petals. They are believed to bring good luck and prosperity. As the flower petals wither and fall, the calyx closes and turns blood red and waxy in appearance. It then splits open to reveal one to five pea-sized green spherical berries that will turn black and shiny when ripe. Some berries drop prematurely while others continue to ripen. The bright red sepals then resemble the petals of a red flower.

Party
Light appetizers, little bits of hard and soft cheese, pickles, meat or fish, onions green and red, apples and pears, jams and nut butters on crackers on plates prepared for guests on side tables lined up North and South walls.
Bit of drink in every cup. From virgin fruit punch to gin and tonics, help yourself to the bar at the East and West corners of the room. The bars are well stocked and besides them is the mix table with non alcoholic drinks if you like. The bars are East and West as the sun rises and sets, to remind you to pace yourself if you don't want a hangover.
The refreshments ring is the outside, next comes the art. Arranged according to the Seasons we have Autumn at the West, where the sun sets and the twilight transitions is best suited. I'm an Autumn baby so this is probably where you find me by default, sitting in a dark red easy chair drinking a craft beer talking about the history of the weather in influencing military campaigns. I forgot to use a coaster, so there's a ring of condensation on the coffee table. It'll leave a mark, small reminder of our times here.
North is where you find the Winter Motif, cool colours like blue snow and Evergreen pines. Air conditioning is the strongest here, but the chairs come with blankets. Hot coffee, tea, and coffee liqueur is found here, hot drinks and the faux fireplace coffee table. Talk is light and breezy, plans for the future are common and easy, now is the time to collaborate our intents and conquer the world. Seize the day, cozy and warm under woolen comfort.
To the East is Springtime, you know it and I know it. Bright colours bursting with life, earthen tones await them all the same. A balance of new life built on the decay of old. Mushrooms show signs of a life after death, their fruiting forms a peek of something hidden under the veil of the surface of the dirt. Flowers attract insects, insects attract birds and at night bats. The new buds of trees show the vulnerability of the eldest trees, and the vigor of the saplings. Drinks here are fruity and bubbly, but to be honest I might spike a peppermint tea with something stronger. The beanbag chairs lounge around a big flat leaf table, with a spilled drink dripping off the side. It's okay it's only water.
.At the South there's the biggest windows, I live in the North so that's where they go to get the best light. The spiciest snacks are here, but also the freshest fruits. A BLT is a tomato sandwich that brought friends. Is the cheese spicy or are the spices cheesy? Yes, that line always gets a laugh like "is it hot enough for ya?". Art here is focused on motion and it's shadow, fulfilling dreams and living life. What are dreams but life's shadow? I've never been one for Caesars or bloody Marys, not a tomato juice guy myself but they're popular here. I'll have a vodka and cucumber water, need something light in the direct sun. Topics of conversation are about immediacy, what we did before the party, how much we swam last week, what cliff we're taking on tomorrow. I swear on the Gods if you touch my Apollo statue again I will curse you with psychic powers, and please stop jumping over the camp fire, it's sacred. The chairs here are Muskoka chairs, Americans call them Airondraks I believe. Besides each is a cooler you can put drinks in and rest your can on the top of, no shared table here we have the fire.
In the middle of the room a spiral staircase, entrance and exit with grace.

YOUR 2024 Taurus Season Forecast
Say adios to the me-first mentally and go-go-go-ness of Aries season and get ready to relax. The Sun has entered lax and passive earth sign Taurus. Taurus season, which runs Apr. 19 thru May 20, is a season of pleasure, passivity and tranquility. Which means for the next four or so weeks, you’ll be indulging in any and all activities that get you relaxing and feeling good. (You might also work, but only from time-to-time.) This means less go-go-go-ing and speedily chasing ungettable gets, and more moments of contentment and chill. (Hopefully.)
If you’ve read my ebook on the zodiac sign, then you already know quite a bit about Taurus. Ruled by Venus, the planet of pleasure and security, Taurus is known for its heightened senses and appreciation for all things beautiful, sensuous, and comfortable. However, the fixed earth sign is also notoriously stubborn, methodical, pragmatic, and slow-moving. (Fixed mode = determined; earth element = practical.) One of the main characters in my novel, Jupiter Returns, is a Taurus and she is ALL about that serene, slow-moving, food-and-nature-loving life. And so too might you be the next 30 or so days.
In the Northern hemisphere, Taurus season sits in between the onset of spring and the shift into summer. So, it’s a time of stabilizing, of luxuriating in what nature has only recently seeded. Yes, Taurus loves to grow things and build, but only at a leisurely, methodical, plodding pace. Taurus season is thus about slow-maxing and enjoyment. It’s a time for stopping and smelling the just-budding pear trees and perky yellow daffodils. When do you plant seeds? During Aries season, because you’ve got energy and excitement and So. Many. Ideas. But when do those seeds start to slowly sprout out of the wet topsoil, showing signs of serious growth to come? During Taurus Season.
Learn MORE about 2024 Taurus Season, including all the transits you can look forward to here:

Note
A bird, a juvenile crow specifically, has found his way into the garden. It's happily splashing about in a small pond, dipping his head under the water and using his wings to splash it up over his back. After a thorough soaking the bird hops his way back out of the shallow water and then, flops over on his back. The crow fans his wings out to the sides like solar panels to dry and warm him, he kicks his little legs happily and burbles to himself.
A pair of sandeled feet pass through the unnatural garden. A tribute to magic and vanity. Crocus and Daffodils bloom, as it is there time. But they are sheltered beneath dahlias, and Orchids, things that belong to different seasons.
The walker lifts a hand toward a sprig of a pear tree, bright with green buds, fragile and new.
Fire licks from his fingertips, devouring the buds. But they do not burn.
They grow, bloom, fruit, seconds pass, and the branch quavers as the pears grow fat, splits their skin from the sheer force of their fruiting. Then, the plants begin to rot on the branch, putrifying, then drying, withering into ancient husks.
The rot of old age begins to spread down the branch, but the walker quickly snaps it off at the base. The fire returns to his hands, but now, it is green, swirling with a years worth of life energy.
"Here you go, smallest one." He coos to something nestled in his palm. Gently, he feeds the fire into it. "A few more months."
In his hand, a listless bunting perks up, trills tiredly, and takes wing, alighting on his shoulder.

Another step, and he catches sight of the crow.
"A blackbird!" He hurries forward, kneeling down, "Oh, the poor thing..."
his hands are snake-quick, scooping the bird up.
