Steven Universe “I Used To Not Like Pearl, Now I Love Her”

i usually post about helluva boss but i really wanted to share my thoughts on this

Pearl is a character from steven universe I had a-lot of feelings towards during it’s early times in the show, i used to kinda like and not really like her, but now i love her to bits

Early seasons of pearl

pearl to me was kinda a hard character to like, to me, pearl seemed very entitled when it came to her relationship with rose, how close she was with her and how much she obsessed she was over her, and in the episode “Rose's Scabbard”, really left a sour taste in my mouth, for her to yell at the gems and at steven, claiming she knew things about rose and they didn’t, saying that they didn’t even know her like how she knew rose, it made me really upset and mad, because they were all a team and it didn’t even seem like a big deal

and another thing was the two tension between pearl and greg, i was always annoyed with how petty and rude she was towards greg about how she and rose had something special, claiming he didn’t know her at all, even going as far as to use fusion against him, saying that fusion is the ultimate connection between gems, emphasizing to greg that no matter what, i’ll have something to offer rose while you don’t

to me she was always so weirdly possessive of rose, and it always annoyed me, but also confused me as to why she held such a deep connection between them

i don’t mean to sound as though i hated pearl, in actually i didn’t, i would say she was my least favourite character, but she had her moments where she won me over, like in uncle grampa, and where she comforted amethyst after apologizing to her about making her feel as though she was a big mistake

After the big reveal

it wasn’t until the big reveal that everything about pearl started to make sense, and whenever i re-watch scenes that made me not like, now make me feel even more sorry for her

in Rose's Scabbard, pearl was completely within her to be upset and hurt, SHE knew EVERYTHING about rose, her real identity, everything, and the fact that rose kept the lion from her, the person who always stood by her, i’m surprised pearl didn’t wreck the place in anger

and with the who rivalry between her and greg made even more sense, because pearl was right to feel betrayed, after years of standing by her side, fighting for her in a war, she lost to a human, years and years of love and dedication, all gone with a snap of her fingers, no wonder pearl was so bitter towards greg

i also think because rose was still technically pink diamond, pearl still saw her as a divine gem to serve for the rest of her life, so even when she fought in war, she mostly did it for rose, not really for herself, ironically, steven being born was when pearl was finally free, because without rose, she had to find a purpose and learn that she was more then a servant, the most miserable day of her life ended up being the day she was freed

and the fact she had to keep the secret for so long and not tell anyone, she was never really able to move on, forever forced to conceal a secret, and carry so much hurt, pain and guilt, that you can never seem to get over the past, it just keeps following you

pearl in STF, is probably the most gem that went through the most development, she’s so much more independent, and while she is still protective of rose, she’s learning to let go, she even joined in with greg to play music!!, greg!!, of all people!!, and she even has human friends!!, now that pearl was finally free from keeping that secret, she was finally able to move on and find herself and she did, pearl had the best and one the most complex story arcs and development in the series
