WHAT I DO WHEN I’M ON MY PERIOD
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
୨☕️୧
Tumblr media
Hi, hii! Today’s post isn’t random because I started my period yesterday and I also got sick so my energy is really drained and I want to share a few tips to maybe help some of you! ( this is the 2nd time I’m writing this so I’m a bit annoyed )
— HYDRATION : you gotta drink A LOT of water during your period. Hydration is already so important as it is but during your period it’s 10x more important
— TEA : first of all shoutout to all my tea girlies. Then, I love drinking tea ( without caffeine!) because it not only makes my cramps better because of the warmth and since i often drink peppermint and ginger ( which is really good during your period ) but i also just convince myself that tea will make me feel better so it does. ( it’a all about the mindset )
— POSITIVITY : I always try to see the good in things which also includes my period. As i told SOME PEOPLE I imagine it as the blood of my enemies.. not i’m kidding. I just tell myself that I can grow a whole human and that it’s gonna be over soon. This isn’t temporary so I shouldn’t complain because I can’t change anything about it by complaining ( I tell myself that with a lot of things. Complaining never helps )
— EATING : I try to get as many vitamins in as possible with veggies, fruits and nuts but fish and chicken is also very good for you!
— VITAMINS/SUPPLEMENTS : i only eat chicken as meat so i’m deficient in a lot of vitamins so i have to take a lot of the most important one during your period is magnesium. Even if you eat a lot of food containing magnesium ( mostly nuts ) you should consider taking some magnesium supplements
— REST : this is the key to not passing out in this week of suffering. Sleep a lot and limit your physical activity ( I’m sorry to my athletes out there. ), instead of going to the gym and doing heavy workouts stay in bed and read a nice book or do chores around the house ( also has you moving )
— MOVE : very contradictory but yoga and a bit of walking can never do harm, i love walking during my period because it makes me feel like I did something but it also doesn’t leave me completely drained from all energy.
— WARMTH : tea, warm baths, heating pads and pets ( my cats keep me warm <3 )
— DISTRACTION : this may differ from person to person but I need a lot of distraction especially when I’m just laying around in bed so I usually read a very captivating book to focus 100% and forget about the pain.
— PEOPLE : I stay in my dark room and when I’m in school talk less because I’m worried that I’ll snap at people but I usually tell my friends that I’m on my period or they figure so there isn’t any misunderstandings
— REMINDERS : you can’t do anything about the fact that you get periods, they’re normal and you shouldn’t feel ashamed about them. People who make you feel that way about them are childish. You weight may vary so don’t panic! ( i don’t weight myself during my period because it’s not my real weight so it’s of no use! ). Your energy is already low so try to stay calm and not waste it on unnecessary things or people. Drama can wait for when you’re ovulating.

I've seen some weird misconceptions around how you can't wear pads in boxers. You can. You just (obviously) need the tight kind. What you need to do is position the pad just a little bit further back than you'd think. You can also pull up your boxers and adjust the position of the pad like that. It works. It doesn't leak. If you doubt it, try it at home for a day first.

How tf do afab people go to work with period pains? Genuine question, help me out because this is unbearable. Pills don't work, nothing works and I'm supposed to be painting a 2m × 2m wall, while I feel like my uterus is gonna explode...

I've looked in this tag every month for years just to not feel alone whenever my period shows up. You'd think that after 14 years of having a period, it'd get easier to manage but nope, every month is slightly different and every couple years, something new is added to the possible symptom list. Premenstrual and menstrual.
The newest addition is intense nausea on day 1 and 2. Enough that I can't eat but I have to cuz I can't take the painkillers on an empty stomach, it'll further damage my stomach lining.
I need a solution to these cramps. They average around 10-15/10 for 2 days.
But yea, this tag is an old and dear friend <3

~period advice~
hey loves! today i want to share some of my advice to help you feel your best/be your best person during your period :)
have a heating pad/medicine in your house just in case you get bad cramps
stay super hydrated
try drinking herbal teas
make sure to eat healthy food to ease cramps
do light exercise to feel better- strecthing is always a good option
listen to your body- relax and do what makes you feel comfortable
always make sure to track your period
go outside and get fresh air
journal if you’re feeling down
make sure to stay well rested
and of course, if your period is super irregular make sure to talk to your doctor about that. i used to have super miserable periods- they were heavy and would last for over two weeks (sometimes the whole month), the cramps were so bad i could barely get out of bed and i had to miss school and practice over it. i was embarassed to talk to my doctor- but in the end they were able to prescribe me birth control that’s helped regulate my periods, so don’t be afraid to speak up.

underrated blessings while on your period
it’s like yeah, being on your period sucks. and for me, the 1-2 weeks beforehand can be even worse. but it’s like, I still have the blessing of being able to curl up in a blanket on my bed with some tea when I have cramps. I always have access to pads whenever I need them. and it’s like yeah, bc it’s a basic female necessity. it is an essential. but the thing is, I know that there are parts of the world where girls don’t even have access to pads when they have their period. something that is as necessary as food and water. imagine how bad it must feel. you’re already struggling with pms, cramps, feeling sick. you aren’t able to go to your cabinet under your bathroom sink and grab a pad. bc unfortunately, in some parts of the world, having access to pads when you have your period is a luxury.
So that is why I say, having access to pads whenever I need them, is, in fact, an underrated blessing.
I get my period. I’m able to go take a warm shower with whatever bath and body works shower gel I feel like using. I get to wear my comfiest loosest pjs. fuzzy socks if I want. I have the blessing of making hot tea in my kitchen and bringing it up to my room to sit in bed and sip on it, wrapped up in a cozy blanket. I can take Tylenol or advil if I need to. if I feel like crying, I can. these, are underrated blessings.

Hey there, sweetness!! Thank you for reaching out. For your first question: Yes, you absolutely may be my 🌈 anon! Thank you for asking. Hope you are doing well, dear anon!! ♥️
I am sorry to hear about your pre and post period cramps…. Definitely sending my love. I am also sorry to hear that heating pads, showers, and moving around don’t help. But know, that’s okay, it’s very valid. Everyone is different. *sigh* And nothing able to even stand is hard. I’m very sorry, love… 💗

So, What are my ideas and/or tips for painful periods and cramps?
I have answered questions around similar topics, here is the link to that post if you want to check it out. As a summary, I mentioned that heating pads, painkillers, hot showers/baths, hydration, exercise, comfort foods, and comfort shows/movies are all possible things that can sometimes help difficult periods and/or cramps.
Besides those, here is an article with some more ideas about period tips and tricks— 13 ways to stop period cramps.
I would also recommend checking out this healthline article about possible remedies— What Helps Menstrual Cramps.
Tumblr media
Personally what worked for me was extra hydration (tea was my best friend) and walking daily. I also liked to curl up in my couch, clutching a soft and large pillow to my core (it was a grounding thing that helped me calm down). Sometimes crying would help me destress and process my emotions as well. As well as avoiding things that are overstimulating.
I hope you found this helpful!! Thanks again for reaching out. I really recommend you take a look at those articles, they have some good and interesting ideas. Don’t ever hesitate to reach out. Hope you have a lovely day/night!! 💞💞💞

Period tips for everyone of all genders
this will include some tips for everyone, but also some for anyone who binds or wears boxers
drink lots of water. during my last period, I was drinking about 9 cups of water a day, and it made my flow lighter, and it helped with cramps as well.
tea will help with cramps. if you don't have a heating pad (or even if you do), the warmth will help ease your cramps.
change your pad/tampon every few hours. I know they're extremely easy to forget about, so you can set a timer on your phone if you need to remember.
put a towel down on your bed. this will protect your sheets from blood while you sleep.
limit your binding during this time. if your chest is already sore, binding will most likely make it worse. if you can, don't do it at all, but if you can't, no worries! maybe just don't bind for as long as you usually would.
please do not put a pad on boxers. as you may be able to guess, boxers were not made to fit a pad. if you put a pad on them, you will make a mess. put some underwear made for a pad on (anything but a thong from the women's section) or briefs. you can also but the boxers on top of the other pair of you'd like.
make sure you're eating enough. I don't care what you eat, just please make sure you're feeding yourself.
yoga can help with cramps/other pain you're feeling. if you go to YouTube and search 'yoga for periods', there will be plenty of videos that can help you!
if you go to school/work, always keep a little period kit with you. in the kit, you can keep pads/tampons/menstrual cups, etc., a clean pair of underwear, pain relieving pills (but I know some schools don't allow any kind of medication, so if your school doesn't just skip that step if you want), wipes if you use them, a clean pair of pants, and anything else you want.
get plenty of rest! this step is so easy to look past, but it's very important, especially during this time of the month.
lastly, if you don't identify as a woman, please don't let this get to you. you are still 100% valid in your identity, maybe just think of this as a road block. I've seen some transmascs thinking of theirs as their dick missing, hence the bleeding. you are not alone in this feeling, there are millions of people world wide experiencing the same thing as you.

period tip for all the period having people: if you use pads and often get your underwear stained, wear two pairs of panties - put the pad on one, then pull a second one over it, it will help keep the pad in place
been doing this for the longest time but i just found out its not widely known? i rarely leak through and if i do, its just a little splash instead of a whole pair of underwear ruined

Period tips from a girl with very heavy periods
Just in case anyone comes at me for saying the word period I will have you know it is perfectly normal and should be treated as such, so kindly and respectfully fuck off ❤️
Medicine is your best friend so take it even if you're cramping and don't feel like getting up
If you feel okay enough to drink something and have a headache try hot cocoa or coffee. The warmth will help with the headache and may satisfy you if you're craving chocolate or coffee
Keep yourself clean. Shower and change pads or tampons regularly (Every hour or two depending on your flow)
There is no shame in going on birth control. It lessens your period a lot or may stop blood flow completely
Don't let anyone shame you for your period and don't be embarrassed about. It's perfectly normal and should be treated as such
Don't be afraid to ask for pads or tampons from classmates or teachers. Like I said it's totally normal
Hope this helped ❤️

🌸Emergency period bag🌸
Tumblr media
(Photo doesn't belong to me!)
🌸•Emergency period bag for people who menstruate :) great for school, outings, trips, and work.
🌱•Toiletries•🌱
🌺•Sanitary wipes
🌺•Mini water bottle or variation incase you need to clean up
🌺•Pads, tampons, period underwear, menstrual cup, or whatever menstrual hygiene product you use.(For those first getting their period, I would suggest starting with pads. Remember to change your pad every three to four hours if your flow is heavy, and every four to eight if not, your tampon every anywhere from 3-4 or 4-6 hours, no more than 8 hours but to stay safe is recommended to change more often than that. Just be sure to change regularly and change before you go to bed. Empty your menstrual cup whenever suits you, but leave in for no more than 10 hours. How quickly the cup fills and will need to be changed depends upon you and your cycle.
🌺•Mini deodorant (I personally like Native, as they're natural, good products with a variety of scents, something for everyone, and good coverage; however they are a bit pricey, so I also enjoy Old Spice.)
🌱•Pain relief•🌱
🌺•Pain medication (if you take it. I typically use tylenol and ibuprofen. Tylenol is generally safer but seems less affective.)
🌺•Hot water bottle (it is recommended that you have a cover for your hot water bottle! It keeps the bottle from becoming too hot and causing burns.)
🌺•Heating pad (if you can fit in your bag and if you have access to use it. Probably better for trips. I know some heating pads are chargeable while others will need to be plugged in. Be sure not to use it too hot, you dont want to burn yourself!)
🌺•I hear for certain individuals, those small massage tools can help for cramps- so, if you are one of those individuals, it could be beneficial as long as it's not too loud. Again, probably better for a trip.)
🌺•Those plush animals you can put in the freezer are nice as well! They're cute and fun! Just be sure to be careful, and not to heat for too long. Only heat for recommended time and be sure to check reviews of the product for proper heating times.
🌱•Other beneficial things•🌱
🌺•Water (gotta keep hydrated! Can be simple bottled water or use a cup. I like those cheap 99cent thermoses :) and those cups that you put ice in and they stay cold for hours are nice!)
🌺•I enjoy smoothies and juice on my period. A bottle of Juice or tea can be good! I like Combucha and pomegranate juice, the kind with seeds in it. I wouldn't recommend soda on your period as it can upset your stomach and make you feel bloated.
🌺•For cravings, I recommend taking a few small snacks. It's good to have foods like nuts, fruits, and a bit of chocolate. Whole foods are good for your period. Chocolates and cakes are also totally okay, yo! I like having cosmic brownies, M&Ms, and chocolate covered fruit.
🌺•A change clothes in case of stains (if you can fit it in your bag. If you cant, just take a change of undergarments.)
🌺•Any comfort items are good! Small plushes, keychains, religious items like necklaces etc, books, and generally anything that brings you comfort! Depending on the size of your bag and the event- you can even bring blankets and such. Personally, some of my comfort items are statues and figures of celebrities and characters I like, as well as rocks for religious reasons. So, anything that brings you comfort can be a comfort item. The sky and the size of your bag are the limit!
🌱•Bags•🌱
🌺•So, there's many different types of bags that can be used! My personal favorite if you want a lot of space are messenger bags. They're large, usually have plenty of pockets, and remain relatively light. They're also inspired by old-school mailman bags, so if you're looking for a more masc or gender neutrals bag, they're a great option. They come in many different styles as well! Personally, mine is pastel pink and covered in a vintage-y pink and green floral pattern. Anything can work depending on how much size you need, however. If you simply want to bring a menstrual product, medicine, and sanitary wipes, for example, a fanny pack or small satchel could suffice. A backpack could also be used. Anything that you like and makes you comfortable, with enough room for your things is the perfect fit! ♡
