Stats 2: Electric Boogaloo
Our 256 works are comprised of.... 132 paintings, 36 drawings / digital artworks / comics, 26 installation pieces, 20 sculptures, 11 buildings, 11 public artworks, 10 photographs, 4 prints, 3 cave arts, 2 textile arts, and 1 thing I classified as a collage instead of anything else!
More stats below!
Most popular city: New York, with 13 pieces, followed by Paris with 8, and Chicago is third with 7! Washington DC has 6, Florence, Madrid, and London all have 5, Philadelphia has 4, Dublin, Edinburgh, Mexico City each have three, and all the following cities have two: Boston, Cairo, Calgary, Cordoba, Helsinki, Houston, Jerusalem, Los Angeles, Munich, Ottawa, Prague, Vienna, Warsaw
Most popular museum: somehow the Art Institute of Chicago has the most with 6 pieces! Followed by the Museum of Modern Art with 5 pieces! The Museo del Prado has 4, the Philadelphia Museum of Art has 3, and the Ateneum, Louvre, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museo Dolores Olmedo, National Gallery of Canada, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Tate Britain, Tretyakov Gallery, and the Uffizi Gallery each have 2! In addition, the single works are spread out amongst 16 city level galleries (ie the Phoenix Art Museum), 5 state/provincial (ie Queensland Art Gallery), 25 national (ie National Gallery Prague), 8 museums named after benefactors (ie the Hirshhorn Museum), 7 museums dedicated to a specific artist (ie the Van Gogh Museum) and numerous other institutions! Churches, palaces, increasingly specific museums, museums that are named after their location rather than their governmental level... and of course a whole lot of private collections and pieces we were unable to find the location of!
Countries! 50 pieces are in the US! 13 in France! 12 in Spain! 7 in England, 6 in Canada and Italy, 5 in Russia, 4 in Ireland, Mexico, and Australia, 3 each in Germany, Austria, and Scotland, and 2 each in China, the Netherlands, Israel, Finland, Wales, Poland, Japan, Egypt, and India, and 1 each in Portugal, Ecuador, Thailand, Singapore, Belgium, Argentina, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Norway, Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia, and the Vatican!
Demographics! I revoked John Singer Sargents American status for these because he was born in Europe, and spent most of his life travelling around Europe. I tried my best to track down the correct numbers but honestly some of these are likely to be slightly off. I went with easily publicly available information like Wikipedia and where that failed the author's website. I also tracked people's birth countries in addition to where they lived / worked for most of their lives. Anyway! We have 74 pieces by American artists! 27 French, 22 English, 14 Russian, 13 Spanish, 11 Canadian, 9 Italian, 8 Chinese, 8 German, 6 Irish, 6 Polish, 6 Mexican, 5 Greek (four of those are Ancient Greece), 5 Ukrainian, 5 Japanese, 4 Australian, 4 Belgian, 4 Indian, 3 Serbian, 3 Armenian, 3 Dutch, 3 Austria, 3 Latvian, 3 Swedish, 2 each from Finland, Scotland, Malaysia, Cuba, the Czech Republic, and Norway, and one each from Israel (specifically), Portugal, Ecuador, Thailand, Switzerland, Denmark, Iran, Colombia, Chile, Estonia, and Egypt (albeit Ancient Egypt)
Including the one Israeli artist, we have 7 Jewish artists represented, as well as 4 Black, 6 Indigenous (one is half Kichwa, one is Sami, one is Haida, one is Ojibwe, and two are Australian Aboriginals. One of those is Kokatha and Nukunu, and the other one was a group project with eight artists who did the majority of the work, and 6 of those are from Erub Island but the articles did not specify further except that at least one of the eight is non-Indigenous), 1 Chicana, and 1 Asian-American (which I am specifying because I felt very stupid adding tallies to an Asian column when I already said there are 8 Chinese artists and 5 Japanese and 2 Malaysians and....). We also do have 16 artists that publicly identify as queer in some fashion! I have listed 9 works by gay men, 2 works by lesbians, and 5 that have chosen to use "queer" instead of other labels.
And on that note.... we have 155 works by men, 51 by women, and 2 by nonbinary artists!
Most represented artists! Frida Kahlo and René Magritte tied with four works each! Félix González-Torres, Francisco Goya, John Singer Sargent each have three! And the artists that have 2 artworks each are... Claude Monet, Dragan Bibin, Edmund Blair Leighton, Francisco de Zurbarán, Gustav Klimt, Holly Warburton, Hugo Simberg, Ilya Repin, Ivan Aivazovsky, Jacques-Louis David, Jenny Holzer, Louis Wain, Pablo Picasso, Sun Yuan & Peng Yu, Victo Ngai, Vincent van Gogh, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Leonardo da Vinci (although the second is debated attribution)! That means that 205 of the works are not by any of the above! Some have unknown artists (we've got THREE CAVE ARTS) but most are just... really varied!
And lastly, years painted (as sorted by year finished and not year started). Who else loves when something is listed as "13th century"?? Not me, that's who. This is going to be a lot of numbers, and there's no real way to make it more readable. so..... feel free to skip!
The oldest two submissions are from circa 40,000 years before present, and 30 to 32 thousand years before present! Six more artworks came to exist before 0 (CE or AD depending on who you're talking to), and 7 before 1000! 2 from the 1200s, 6 from the 1400s, 8 from the 1500s, 3 from the 1600s, and 5 from the 1700s! Several of those already listed were started in a previous ....age category (for instance, one has no specified date other than 7300 BC to 700 AD) but once we hit 1600, everything is usually finished in a relatively short timespan. 6 are from 1800-1850, 9 from 1850-1880, and the 1880s are extremely busy. 1 from 1881, 3 from 1882, 1 from 1883-1885, 5 from 1886, and two each from the next four years (1887-1890)! 6 from 1891-1895, and 5 from 1896-1900!
We've got 3 from 1901 or 1902, 4 from 1903, two each from 1906 and 1907, and one each from 1908 and 1909! 3 from 1910-1915, 3 from 1917, 2 from 1918 and one from 1919! 6 are from the Roaring Twenties, three of them specifically from 1928! 4 from 1931-1935, and only 3 from the latter half of the 30s! There's 3 from WWII, and 4 from 1946-1949, 5 from 1951-1954 but only 3 from '55-'59. 5 from the sixties, 7 spread out through the 70s, and 10 from the 80s, two each from 81, 82 and 84. The 90s have a lot of duplicate and triplicate years, totaling 20 overall! 11 are from 90-95, the other 9 are 96-99. 7 from 2001-2005, and 8 from 2006-2009. 9 from 2010-2014, 3 from 2015, 6 from 2016, 5 from 2017, 1 from 2018, 3 from 2019, 5 from 2020, 1 from 2021, 4 from 2022, 11 from 2023, and 3 ongoing projects! Whew! If anyone wants it listed By Year instead of in groups like this, that'll be most readable in like... list form and that's way too long for a stats post.
Congrats on making it to the end! If you got this far, uh, let me know if you want to see the spreadsheet after the tournament, I guess. I'm very proud of it.

Kids are running all over a temporary playground in the middle of the National Mall. It's part of Beyond Granite: Pulling Together, the Mall's first-ever official outdoor show. The idea is to commemorate American stories missing from the Mall and question how history has been enshrined in stone.
These new monuments look very different from the familiar imposing white monoliths or bronze presidents in thoughtful repose. Six acclaimed artists representing a cross-section of Americans – Black, Latino, Asian and Native – from all over the country were chosen by the Philadelphia-based group Monument Lab to participate.
More at the link. These sound great!
Minnesota is among the latest states — New Mexico passed a similar law this year — to speed up restoration of voting eligibility to the formerly incarcerated and others with felony records, though other states have restricted access.
The law change in Minnesota is estimated to affect more than 55,000 people still serving some stage of a sentence outside a jail or prison wall. The challenge is to get them to use those voting rights.

Tyler the Creator, Lil Uzi Vert, Jazmine Sullivan, Kodak Black, Pusha T & JID – Made in America Festival (Day 1) – Benjamin Franklin Parkway – Philadelphia, PA – September 3. 2022
Bad Bunny, Snoh Aalegra, Tate McRae & Victoria Monét – Made in America Festival (Day 2) – Benjamin Franklin Parkway – Philadelphia, PA – September 4. 2022
Crowds gathered back at Philadelphia's Ben Franklin Parkway for Jay-Z's Made in America this Labor Day holiday weekend. This was the festival's second year back after a quick hiatus during 2020 due to COVID, and both the musicians and attendees were elated to be there. Food trucks were shelling out famous Philly Soft Pretzels and modern Asian cuisine from WokWorks, while the bar lines were a bit shorter – I'd say due to the majority of the concertgoers being on the younger side.
Tumblr media
The musical performances on day one were packed from start to finish. Whether the crowds were rushing the grounds to hear JID close out his set with his hit "Stick" or rapping along to Pusha-T and his feature on Lamborghini Mercy – the energy was palpable throughout the festival grounds.
Tumblr media
Two Philly locals, Jazmine Sullivan and Lil Uzi Vert took the stages back-to-back. Jazmine began her performance with her Grammy Nominated hit "Bust Your Windows" and continued with her message of female empowerment throughout her set. Sprinkling in spoken word, interpretive dance, and preaching the message of self-love throughout her numerous hits while the crowd sang along.
Tumblr media
Lil Uzi Vert's set channeled the opposite (but still incredible) energy. With Lamborghinis on stage and a light show for the ages, the crowd could not have been more energized. Carrying them through the set with hits such as "The Way Life Goes" and "XO Tour Llif3", they closed out their set with the classics "7AM" and "Final Fantasy."
Tumblr media
Closing out day one was headliner Tyler the Creator. Known for his creative energy and style, Tyler opened his performance stating that the crowd better be ready to watch him "prance around in his loafers for an hour." Which... is exactly what he did. Just while maintaining his impeccable stage presence, performing his catchy hits such as "WusYaName" and "CORSO."
Tumblr media
Day two of the festival was a Latinx dance party from start to finish – but all leading up to headliner Puerto Rican mega-star Bad Bunny, whose crowds came in droves from miles away to see perform live.
Tumblr media
Newcomer Tate McRae performed earlier in the evening, having the crowd completely enamored by her pop-hits. McRae's ability to take over the stage with her catchy songs and dance moves will give her the momentum necessary to gain recognition within the industry – having gotten her start on So You Think You Can Dance many years ago.
Tumblr media
Performances from Colombian singer Ryan Castro, Snoh Aalegra, a Swedish R&B singer from Los Angeles and up and coming West Philly artist Armani White filled out the rest of day two and drew full crowds – knowing every word to every song being performed.
Leading up to the long-awaited moment of Bad Bunny appearing on the main stage, Nigerian pop star Burna Boy dominated the stage with his Afropop beats and electric presence – well deserving of the spot of opening act for the top streamed artist in the world.
Tumblr media
The time had finally come for the sensation that is Bad Bunny, and he certainly lived up to the hype. When he entered the beach themed set, lounging on a chair as if he were on vacation, the crowd of thousands erupted. With Puerto Rican flags in the air and every word to every song being sung in unison – a dance party unlike any other erupted on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia, commencing a weekend filled with multicultural vision of "Made in America" that we'd be lucky to see again.

News/Announcements: (Overdue) Shoutouts to Patreon Patrons, Creatives Rebuild New York and Asian Art Initiative Philadelphia March was such a busy month for me that I somehow forgot my monthly shoutouts to my Patreon patrons, Creatives Rebuild New York and Asian Art Initiative. My bad y’all. I’ll try to not let it happen again. So an overdue shoutout to all of ya’ll is below . . . 2023 was one of more embittering, infuriating and maddening years in recent memory for me. And it doesn’t help that with this line of work, it’s all too easy to battle and endure feelings of loneliness, despair and failure; to feel and believe that you’re an imposter. I’ve personally found it to be a brutal, unforgiving and wildly interesting life and career path that can’t — and will never — compare to most other jobs I’ve ever previously had. And I’ve had quite a few of them in my life!  The Joy of Violent Movement turns 14 in June. 14 years of doing anything is a very long time. It’s close to a quarter of my life. And for the blogosphere, that’s roughly somewhere between 10-139 lifetimes. Now, it hasn’t always been easy. There have been moments, where it felt impossible to manage this thing and to keep it going. To be frank, as the kids say “the math ain’t matching.” But for the most part, I can say this: I’ve felt and believed with every fiber of my being that I needed to be brave and bold, and go out on my own, because I didn’t believe that I’d really get a fair shot to do this work for anyone else.  I’ve said this for many years: I’ve long felt strong desire — and need — to create something similar to the wildly eclectic, dynamic and global sort of environment I grew up immersed in as a young Black boy in Corona, Queens. Unsurprisingly, whenever I remember I read my favorite music magazines and sites, I never saw the world I grew up in being covered or represented in any significant or meaningful way.  From my own experiences working in book publishing and as a music journalist, I’ve learn that as much as you can demand fairness, diversity and inclusion, it’s still ultimately up to the powers in control to see it, hear it, understand it, take it to heart and actually do something about it. So what do you do when those in power don’t get it — or don’t want to get it? Well, then it might be time to grit your teeth and try to do it your own damn self.  When I started this site back in 2020, I din’t — and just couldn’t have — imagine the majority of the things I’ve experienced, seen and covered throughout its history to have ever happened.  I’ve covered roughly 1,500 shows in NYC, with a handful of shows in Chicago, Baltimore and Philadelphia.  I’ve covered a dozen or more festivals, including traveling to Montreal for M for Montreal twice — in 2019 and 2022.  I’ve been a panelist at Mondo.NYC Festival, New Colossus Festival, and for a Music Managers Forum Canada Webinar speaking about PR, promotion and press for indie artists, giving my perspective as a indie blogger and journalist.  I made a cameo in a JOVM mainstay’s music video. It’s a very noticeable spot towards the end of the video.  I’ve photographed George Clinton, Patti LaBelle, Buddy Guy, Snoop Dogg, Blondie, Nile Rodgers, Roky Erickson, Philip Bailey, Blind Boys of Alabama, Big Bird, Elmo and a growing list of legendary and beloved artists and personalities, as well as this site’s growing list of mainstays.  What will JOVM’s 14th year hold? Generally speaking my hope is always for bigger and better for the site for y’all as readers. Earlier this month, I announced on this site that I was selected to be in the inaugural cohort for Asian Arts Initiative’s (AAI) Sound Type Music Writers Workshop in Philadelphia. So some explanation: Sound Type is AAI’s music festival designed to support and uplift new, courage music from the Asian Diaspora and beyond. The Music Writers Workshop will provide journalists and critics a series of workshops, gat...

Kiyoshi Kuromiya: An Activist and Advocate for Social Justice and Healthcare Reform.
Tumblr media
Kiyoshi Kuromiya was a prominent activist, artist, and writer who dedicated his life to advocating for social justice, civil rights, and healthcare reform. His work as an activist and advocate had a significant impact on the lives of countless individuals and inspired many to take action in support of social change. Kuromiya was born in 1943 in a Japanese internment camp during World War II. He spent his early years in Colorado and later moved to Philadelphia, where he became involved in the civil rights movement and anti-war activism. He attended the University of Pennsylvania and was an early member of the Gay Liberation Front. Kuromiya was diagnosed with HIV in 1989, which he later referred to as his "ticket to history." He became a fierce advocate for the rights of people living with HIV and AIDS and worked tirelessly to promote education, prevention, and treatment of the disease. As an artist and writer, Kuromiya used his talents to communicate important messages about social justice, human rights, and healthcare reform. He created a range of multimedia artworks, including sculptures, installations, and performances, that were inspired by his experiences as an activist and advocate. In addition to his artistic pursuits, Kuromiya was a dedicated political organizer and worked with a range of social justice organizations throughout his life. He co-founded the Critical Path Project, a healthcare advocacy group, and was a member of the Philadelphia chapter of the Black Panther Party. Kuromiya's activism work extended beyond the United States, and he was a vocal critic of U.S. imperialism and intervention in other countries. He was an early supporter of the Cuban Revolution and visited the country multiple times throughout his life. Despite facing numerous challenges and obstacles as a gay, Asian American, and HIV-positive activist, Kuromiya remained a steadfast and passionate advocate for social justice and civil rights. His work had a profound impact on the lives of many, and he was widely recognized for his contributions to the disability and HIV/AIDS rights movements. Kuromiya passed away in 2000 at the age of 57, but his legacy as an activist, artist, and advocate lives on. His work continues to inspire new generations of activists and advocates to fight for social justice, human rights, and healthcare reform. Read the full article

❤️ @yao_collaborative OPEN CALL :: We are excited to announce our latest open call, Digital Diasporas! ❤️ https://linktr.ee/yao_collaborative ⬅️ In 2021, we launched the first iteration of the Digital Diasporas, a distributed, remote residency which gave artists the space to research, cultivate their practice, and convene across borders. Last year's residents Amy Lam (@amychingyan), Tian Zhang (@tianzhanggg), and Casey Tang (@casey_tang) inspired many generative conversations and long-lasting connections about colonialisms in multiple contexts, sustainability and equity in arts practices, and all the ways in which we (human, non-human, and ecological) coexist in all our relations. The first iteration of the residency was a spacious opportunity for artists to do deep thinking and form cross-border connections without the pressure of producing a final product. In partnership with our host organizations Asian Arts Initiative @asianartsphilly (Philadelphia, US), 4A @4a_aus (Sydney, Australia), and Gendai @gendaigallery (Toronto, Canada), we are seeking artists and curators who self-identify and find it useful to gather under a "Sino and/or Chinese diaspora" cohort. This is a time for research, exploration and learning. We are looking for openness to collective, intercultural & cross-border development and research. The remote, six-week-long online residency will be facilitated by three host organizations in May and June. Each resident will primarily work with one host organization in Canada, Australia, or the United States and all residents as a cohort will be in dialogue with one another through convenings. Each resident or collective will be awarded an unrestricted stipend of AUD $10,000 for their participation. Each host organization will design a program of remote/online mentoring, networking, research and development for the resident they host. The deadline is Wednesday, February 15, 2023, by midnight in your time zone. Apply & tell your friends! Australian Council for the Arts, National Foundation for Australia-China Relations, and Canada Council for the Arts. PS: Send us any questions you have to [email protected] and we'll add it to our FAQ! (at Online) https://www.instagram.com/p/CmRAOkkIGf6/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

K-Pop superstars BTS help present gift from Korean government to the Metropolitan Museum
The set of five richly coloured lacquer vessels by artist Chung Haecho will go on show in the New York museum this December
Tumblr media
Monday was a busy day for K-Pop superstars BTS. This morning, the Korean boy band, freshly minted as “special presidential envoy for future generations and culture” by South Korean President Moon Jae-in, appeared with the leader at the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York and spoke to the power of today’s younger generations to create a more positive and healthy world. And in the evening, they joined the country’s First Lady Kim Jung-sook, a classically trained singer, and culture minister Hwang Hee at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, to present a gift from the South Korean government of lacquerware vessels by Chung Haecho.
“The eyes of the world are on Korean culture—Korean dramas, Korean film, Korean music—but there are still many great Korean artists who are yet to be discovered by the world,” said BTS leader Kim Namjoon at a bilingual reception on the Met’s rooftop garden, underneath Alex Da Corte’s swinging Big Bird sculpture, which he said he was "very fond of". Kim added that in their new special envoy position, BTS felt "a special sense of pride" of being able to support the work of other artists from their country, and are armed with the mission “to try to spread Korean culture through the world and to everyone around the world”.
The gift of five richly hued vessels, Rhythm of the Five Color Luster (2013), based on the cardinal directions and five elements of East Asian cosmology, will be included in the Met’s first exhibition dedicated to the art form, Shell and Resin: Korean Mother-of-Pearl and Lacquer (13 December-5 July 2022). The show will present around 30 examples drawn from the museum’s collection, from an exceedingly rare 12th-century trefoil box from the Goryeo dynasty (918-1392) to a mixed media painting by the contemporary artist Lee Bul.

The history and technical development of Korean lacquer, which traditionally features mother-of-pearl decorations inlayed in pigmented resin, will be examined in the exhibition, as well as the style’s significance across Asia, with examples of Chinese, Japanese, and Ryukyu (Okinawan) lacquers and South Asian mother-of-pearl.
Rather than using mother-of-pearl, Chung's focuses on Korean lacquer itself—called ottchil—experimenting with pigment recipes to create works admired for their depth of colour and luster, according to the Met. The artist’s works are also in the collection of the British Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
“We’re deeply grateful for this generous gift of contemporary lacquer vessels, a gesture that is particularly meaningful as we look ahead to 2023—when The Met will celebrate the 25th anniversary of our Arts of Korea gallery,” said the museum’s director, Max Hollein. The museum is also currently looking to endow its curatorial position for Korean art through a challenge grant from the Korea Foundation, Hollein said, adding that he and some of the curatorial team plan to travel to Korea next spring.
This is not the first example of BTS wielding their "soft power" as cultural ambassadors. Last January, the hit band launched a series of five major public art projects, involving collaborations between some of the world's most significant artists and curators around the world. Connect BTS took place across five cities from January to March 2020—just before the coronavirus shut down much of the international art world—with each artist commission the result of a curator who has "resonated with BTS's philosophy".
In a statement at the time, BTS said that "contemporary art and music are also two different worlds. This project is especially meaningful to us because it truly represents diversity and creates a collective, positive message for the world that we value. Through this project, we hope to return the great amount of love and support from our fans, ARMY, and all audiences."
The band seems to have made at least one new fan at the Met today. "Your big hit right now is 'Permission to Dance'," said Hollein at the gift giving. "That's exactly what we need right now, at what I hope is the tail end of the pandemic. We need to dance more. Thank you for being here."

Born in Aligarh, India, Zarina (1937–2020) and her family left India in 1959 to flee the continuing strife left by the 1947 partition of the Asian subcontinent. After living in several cities around the world, she made New York her home in 1975 where much of her work was shaped by her memories of India. Zarina’s most enduring theme was home and separation. This work, “These Cities Blotted into the Wilderness (Adrienne Rich after Ghalib),” on view now in “Fault Lines: Contemporary Abstraction by Artists from South Asia,” illustrates cities that have been affected by division, conflict, and displacement.

If you were frequenting this site over the course of the past few months, you might recall that last month I announced that I was selected as an inaugural member of the Asian Arts Initiative’s Sound Type Music Writers Workshop in Philadelphia.  Sound Type is Asian Arts Initiative’s Music Festival and Writers Residency designed to support and uplift new, experimental and courageous music from the Asian Diaspora and beyond. The Asian Art Initiative will also provide a series of workshops, gatherings and mentorships to primarily BIPOC musicians, journalists and critics to help build a sustainable ecosystem for them.  As a member of the workshop. I’ll be attending and writing about the showcases of the Sound Type Musical Festival, as well as other music-related programs at the festival. The commentary, articles, interviews and reviews will be published after the 2024 season.  The first show of the series will feature Victoria Shen with Qiujiang Levi Lu on March 23, 2024. Shen’s work eschews conventions in harmony and rhythm in favor of extreme and abrasive textures and gestural tones built around analog modular synthesizers, vinyl/resin record and self-built electronics. My understanding is that tickets are still available for the show. So, Philadelphia friends, come on through to check out a night of boundary-pushing music — and hang out with your boy. Maybe we can stop at Bar or Tattooed Mom after. https://asianartsinitiative.org/programs/victoria-shen-live-in-concert Before the show, AAI will be hosting two events: Friday, March 22, 2024: A Conversation with Victoria Shen. Moderated by Joyce Chung, Curator at Asian Arts Initiative, the pair will delve into the creative practice behind Shen’s current exhibition at AAI and how Shen experiments with making instruments and spatial relationship of sound. This event is free but you need to sign up for tickets. Information can be found here: https://asianartsinitiative.org/programs/victoria-shen-artist-talk Saturday, March 23, 2024: Sound Type Seminar with Victoria Shen and writer and designer Mindy Seu, moderated by AAI’s Anne Ishii. The pair will discuss their boundary-pushing work and its relation to Sound Type’s mission: uplifting new, experimental, courageous music from the Asian diaspora and beyond! https://asianartsinitiative.org/programs/sound-type-seminar-victoria-shen-and-mindy-seu Check out the bios and information on me and the rest of the fascinating and extremely talented members of the Music Writers cohort, check out the following link:  https://asianartsinitiative.org/news/meet-our-writers-2024-sound-type-music-writers-workshop
