Johnlock Podfics by Podfixx

Hey all! Today’s a different kind of Fic Rec Sunday! I was recently asked to send some love to the amazing @podfixx, and of course I said yes! And I’ve decided to do it in one of my fave ways for content creators: promoting their work!! While I’ve never listened to podfics (it’s not really my thing) I know that Podfixx is a staple of the Sherlock podfic community and deserves all the love for their hard work, professionalism, and dedication.

I want to share my own happy experience with Podfixx: they are the reason I have chapter counts on my fic recs now, if you guys didn’t know. They asked me a few years ago if I could add Chapter counts to fics, because [and this isn’t verbatim, but it’s how I interpreted what they told me... can’t find the message now, it was so long ago] adding chapters actually helps podficcers in deciding which fics to pick next to read, or how to break up a LONG 1 Chapter fic, and helps them plan out their podfic schedule. First of all, I was FLOORED that someone as amazing as Podfixx even read my fic lists (I’m always shocked when anyone takes vested interest in anything I do), but that, at the time, they used them to help pick fics. And since then, I’ve always put chapter counts on all my fics.

So you guys should go and give them a listen!:) This list is OBVIOUSLY not comprehensive, and not everything they’ve done, but PLEASE check out their “Podfixx” tag for everything they’ve read (including Good Omens and Jeeves and Wooster!), and give them some love!!

Podfixx: Johnlock love at first listening

I owe to only one person my deep love for bbc Sherlock, @podfixx

This is a message of love and thanks to her. ♥♥♥♥♥

In 2019 I managed very intense work at the desk added to the housework and as a new mother. While working I listened to podcasts, but I love fiction and had recently discovered Good Omens. Looking for other similar material I came across tumblr and AO3 but I couldn't read anything for obvious reasons of time. The solution was to listen to the fictions as if they were podcasts and audio books, and here Podfixx enters the scene! I devoured her entire Good Omens collection on AO3, I fell in love with her voice and thoughtful comments. But there's a lot more BBC Sherlock material on her profile, and another alias @Lockedinjohnlock. Obviously I already knew the subject, having read Doyle's novels and as a fan of crime series. But I was hesitant: "No, I don't have to start on Johnlock fanfic, it could become my new monomania!". No sooner said than done.

According to my AO3 story, from march 2020 to may 2022, I have read or listened to over 2500 bbc sherlock's fanfic. I have lovely mutuals. I've created fanarts and even written a ficlet.

For anyone who doesn't know, Podfics are like audiobooks! BUT FANFIC! This is a whole side of fandom often neglected on forums, AO3 etc. Shout out to the series down below to welcome new Podfic'ers. Experienced officers with years in the hobby.

Personally, I love them. I struggle to get through the day-to-day sometimes. Plugging in earbuds and listening to fanfic is very comforting. I'm debating doing podfics to get used to my own voice.

I've been regularly smote to bits by the writing and performing talent in the Good Omens fandom. The amount of care put into making Aziraphale's friendship with Crowley really sing is such a delight to experience. I know I'm in for an especially good time when the side characters each have their moment in the story. There's a real place where these stories reside and come to life. They're not the characters from the book, nor are they strictly the characters from the TV series, but they are very much a legit Crowley and Aziraphale. In a suitably Gaimanesque way, this is fully appropriate, therefore there's a Crowley and an Aziraphale for each of us. Lately, I've been enjoying The Grindr Logo Doesn't Even Have A 'G' In It, by indieninja92. The podfic is lovely, with a plummy Aziraphale and drawling Crowley, courtesy of Podfixx. This has been the year I discovered podfics. And what a year of beautiful stories it has been. AO3 can be such a time space continuum for me when I’m into something (which is kinda always) and having a desk job where no one checks up on me is sooo dangerous bc I can just get away with it!! Discovering podfics has made it possible for me to enjoy fics while doing data entry or making maps or even doing housework!! Game changer! I can get myself excited to actually do things by reframing those activities as a chance to listen to the pods I’ve been saving up.

Thank you thank you thank you to all those who record podfics and audiobooks and make them available online. Not only does it make fandom just that bit more accessible to fans of all abilities, its given this ADHDer some valuable time back in my life.

News from a crazy mind...

Sherlock, mental health and the support from a fandom.

When Sherlock becomes what the doctor ordered....

100 days lie between those moments.

100 days since I wanted to die.

100 days since I emailed Dignitas.

100 days full of struggle and hope.

100 days later I made it out of hell again.

A handful of people who showed me unconditional love during the hardest setback of my disorder career.

I will love them till the day I die.

And once again the Sherlock world saved my soul before I destroyed it myself.

A fandom full of kindness and support and a detective and a doctor who saved me in more ways than they can ever imagine.

Had a doctors appointment on Friday and I have one hell of a doctor.

Not as good as John Watson but highly supportive of anything that increases my strength.

We talked about a little miracle.

A miracle that sounds so incredibly stupid but it is such a huge thing.

For the past five years I have to take besides my regular medication in mornings and in the evenings a little extra cocktail of meds in the afternoon to keep my extreme nervousness in check.

I'm nervous and tense 24/7 and it takes a toll on my body sometimes.

It makes it very hard to sleep and to find a way to sit still.

So the extra meds are necessary..

Ten days ago I started to listen to Podfics and quickly discovered a new way to enjoy the Sherlock universe.

I'm 43 years old and retired since I was 39 because my body couldn't take the stress anymore.

I have some free times during the day and I made it a habit for the past ten days to listen to Podfics in the afternoon and again at night.

And suddenly I could sleep and, and here comes the miracle..

I forgot to take my afternoon meds.

Even more my body relaxed in a way I haven't experienced in decades.

My body was obviously as surprised as I am because since a few days I have to drink a coffee in the afternoon, otherwise I would fall asleep.

I can only drink coffee without caffeine which tastes awful but otherwise my nervousness goes through the roof and I shake like a leaf.

But now instead of taking an extra dose of anxiety relief pills I take a real good old black coffee full of caffeine after listening to Podfics.

And that sounds incredibly ridiculous but for me it is a miracle because for the first time in over 15 years I feel calm and not because of a chemical reaction but because of a human reaction.

I know @totallysilvergirl had no idea what would happen by telling me about Podfics but I will never forget it!

Back to my incredible doctor who saw the change from a person who was determined to end this endless circle of depression and anxiety to a person who smiles again.

Now he ordered a six months try of daily Podfics ( no joke) to see if my blood levels improves and accordingly my medication can be reduced.

He knows that in the past three years my disorder was always better during my Sherlock highs so he is actually happy about the new development.

Long story short ( too late I know)

Do whatever feels right for you!

Invent your own therapy!

Do what makes you happy no matter how unconventional it might be.

Because you matter!!!!

WE'RE BACK TO ANNUAL, EVERYONE!!! Seventh Ontario Fic Writers' Retreat, first held in 2016, coming once again in 2024.

When: August 8-11 2024

Where: Blue Mountain Chalets, Collingwood, Ontario

What is it? Four days spent with other fic writers, at all levels of experience. There will be a mix of workshops (Topics TBA and open to suggestions), prompts and challenges, and plenty of independent writing time for your own personal projects. (This year there's also a hot tub and an optional trip to the beach!)

It’s also an opportunity to make connections with people who share your interests and passions, and where you can focus on your own goals and creativity.

Cost (in CANADIAN DOLLARS): $450.00

Here’s what you get for it:

Food Costs (with all participants helping with prep and cleanup - see note below)

Accommodation (Shared rooms but NOT shared beds - sorry)

Use of a hot tub and sauna at this year's venue (New this year!)

Daily workshops and writing sessions (2+ per day)

Space will be allocated on a first-come, first served basis. There are 24 spaces available, after which names will be placed on a waiting list (no payment will be required unless you are offered a spot).

Travel to Toronto is not included.

However, since several participants (and the organizer) live in the area, we have always been able to arrange ride-shares from the Toronto Airport to the various venues. These connections will be arranged after registration.

***A note regarding meals: They'll look a little different this year - we'll be making our own! The venue is a pair of summer chalet/cottage spaces with full kitchens. All participants will be asked to take part in making meals happen - either for planning, picking up groceries, preparation or clean-up. The cost of the food is included in the price.

A calming effect

John is invalided home from Afghanistan. He's miserable with an inexplicable cold that's set in his bones and nothing he does can make it disappear. When his therapist suggests a podcast Mike Stamford has mentioned to her, and John reluctantly agrees to give it a try, things change. The velvety voice does things to John he isn't prepared for, and he's determined to meet the man behind the podcast. That proves to be easier said than done.

Please help a struggling artist.

Hi everyone.

I'll try my best to word this as well as I can; this is a plea for help.

I'm Donna, a 27 yr old freelancing queer+POC female artist.

As my Tumblr activity would suggest, my favourite thing to do is make fandom artwork, it brings me joy like no other. That has come to a standstill as in the past few months I've been unable to make ends meet with unexpected bills, having been kicked out of my previous apartment, and spending a lot of time and money in hunting for a new one in a dire time limit.

I've been holing up temporarily in an acquaintance's home for a very minimal charge, but her kindness can only extend till the end of June as she is moving away and giving her place up for rent for an amount I cannot afford anymore.

I have found a smaller place, but I still do not have enough to make the deposit/the rent that I need to pay by next week or I will lose the place. I'm down to my last trickle of savings that I can rely on for food alone.

In a week's time, I will be homeless and broke; I do not have a vehicle to crash in or any friends in the city I can approach who could accommodate me. I cannot return to my conservative parents in my hometown, I would have to give up my freedom as an artist and return to a closet I spent all my twenties working hard to get out of.

I've been living every day in constant debilitating anxiety and panic. Searching for a safe/affordable apartment and a paying job simultaneously is using up all my energy and will; my mental health has taken a massive hit with subsequent depression.

I'm on my last few dregs of hope and you guys here are it.

My dear friend @enterthetadpole (an absolute angel who has helped me as much as she can) tells me how the fandom helped her when she was in need of desperate help, so I hope I too can turn to this space that has kept my spirits from waning completely out of me. Fandom content has been a safe haven; reading fics, looking at art, and poring through all the discourses here help me forget some of the fear and anxiety that grips me constantly.

I want to be able to give back to the community with art and sketches soon. I want to be able to open commissions again once my living situation is sorted.

Art is bread and butter, and my happy place.
